✪Alternate Routes✪
ormally Airport Boulevard and Highway 152 handle the cars and farm trucks pretty well. But those who routinely travel some portion of Airport to Holohan to Hwy 152 and on to the Fair know what “Traffic Jam” means. The second week of September is guaranteed to produce long lines making the trek to our annual celebration. Before you head to this year’s fair grab the attached map and use it to find a road less traveled. It isn’t necessarily shorter in distance but may be quicker in time. At the very least following roads with names like Casserly and Carlton will certainly take you through some beautiful country. Let there be no doubt, the 2012 Santa Cruz County Fair is worth the trip and this year you can navigate the back roads like a local.

Fair Managers Message
he hundreds of volunteers “Welcome you to the 127th Santa Cruz County Fair.”
For 127 years our fair has offered the very best, so this year’s theme celebrates the “BERRY BEST” from the area. As you stroll through the grounds you will view the hard work and dedication from not only hundreds of volunteers that work tirelessly to make this fair possible but the thousands of participant entries. The time and effort that all our participants put in to make this fair what it is never fails to astound me. As you walk through the grounds take time to admire every aspect of what we have to offer. The beautiful grounds, the educational value of the exhibits, the fun of this wonderful community event and your continued support for its future! In Home Arts located in the Crosetti building, you will find Clothing, Textiles, Preserved Foods, Baked Good, Confections, Arts and Crafts, Photography, as well as the Collections and Hobbies exhibits.
Agriculture/Horticulture is located in the Harvest building; there you will find the giant pumpkins, Berries and other fruits and vegetables, 4-H, FFA, Scouts and other Youth Organization booth displays, LEGOS, and much more. The Floriculture department offers viewers the opportunity to admire their favorite flowers in arrangements, as cut flowers, as well as specialty plants and gardens. Our Livestock Barn, with Pigs, Sheep, goats, and Beef animals, our Saturday Auction, and daily Rodeo events. Browse through the Fine Arts building with paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, glass, gourd and jewelry creations. We have Trains, Poultry, Rabbits, Junior Fair Board has Interactive Science projects on display, Ag History has a Museum, Tractors, demonstrations displays and the Spinners and Weavers doing demonstrations or enter a Handspun and handwoven item. It’s all here and much more, so pack-up the family and all your friends and enjoy this fun filled event. Did we
David Kegebein mention all the great food! Check out the schedules for the daily entertainment events throughout the grounds and have FUN! In closing, I would like to offer a special thanks to all the volunteers it takes to operate the Santa Cruz county Fairground all year long. SEE YOU AT THE FAIR!

Youth
T
his year each Club and Troop will be designing their booth around a berry of their choice. They will have educational information about their berry in the form of games and/or hands on activities. A perfect example of building a booth around this year’s Fair theme is Boulder Creek 4-H. The county’s northernmost club will be featuring two berries and their fight for supremacy. Through their project called «Living up Stream» they have learned that the very prolific Himalayan Blackberry is an unwelcome invasive plant which is choking out the native White Stemmed Raspberry. They have been working diligently, despite numerous pokes and prickles from the blackberries, to pull the invasive plant from their areas in Boulder Creek.
Each 4-H, Scout, and Boys and Girls Club will showcase one of the many projects available to their membership such as sewing, technology, woodworking, Fine Arts and baking. The Technology 4-H project will have their area set-up for fair-goers to explore including perhaps a robot or two. Demonstrations will be performed by 4-H members and other youth organizations throughout the Fair on the stage in the Harvest Bldg. To add to the berry best party on the Fairgrounds the Youth Department will be honoring the Girl Scouts as they celebrate their 100th Anniversary. Stop by and learn more about Girl Scouting as they excitedly look forward to their second century.
From left to right are Joshua Porter, a goat named Brie, Sam the chicken, and Ryan Porter. (Yes they are brothers.) The young lady holding Buddy Boy the goat is Michaela Crill.
4-H Robotics & Technology 4
-H has developed a comprehensive robotics program to inspire young people and develop an early interest in robotics engineering and technology. This new program is part of 4-H’s bold goal to engage one million new young people in science by the year 2013 and to address a declining trend in our nation’s science, engineering, mathematics, and technology workforce. Since this program began in 2009 robotics has been a part of 4-H Clubs across the country including incorporation into the Technology Program under Bev Porter who is a leader at the Boulder Creek 4-H Club.

Sea Lion Adventures
he Sea Lions are back for more fun at the Santa Cruz County Fair on the Exploratorium Lawn.
The Sea Lions are part of an innovative program called SLEWTHS (Science, Learning and Experimenting With The Help of Sea Lions). Under the coordination of Dr. Jenifer A. Hurley, the program’s director of research and training, SLEWTHS is dedicated to learning more about sea lions and people working together in the interest of marine conservation, research and education. Fairgoers will have the opportunity of viewing and learning more about Dr. Hurley’s famous sea lions each day of the Fair, including being given the opportunity to ask questions about these fascinating animal neighbors of ours. In addition, scheduled training demonstrations will
take place each day
A main tank holding 20,000+ gallons of water will serve as performing stage with a 10,000 gallon tank backstage that provides a rest area. Performances are scheduled twice each afternoon but Dr. Hurley or her assistants can often be found with their troupe throughout the day even when not performing. The sea lions are relaxing and even doing a little light training during most daylight hours each day of the Fair. Find the Sea Lions showing off their tricks in shows scheduled twice daily through the run of the Fair.
The Fables of the West Rides at Santa Cruz County Fair
W
ho doesn’t love crazy cowboys and their silly steeds? The Fables of the West are a wild group of witty cowboys and are back again for this year’s Santa Cruz County Fair! A fan favorite at fairs across the nation, these little cowboys and their little horses love to entertain crowds. With wacky tricks, high energy, and western style, their comedic improv shows have people smiling and laughing all day. As The Fables often say, “We like to ride into a crowd, sing a little ditty, twirl our guns and dazzle the folks with our fancy horse moves.” They bring the fun of the Wild West to everyone at the Fair. The Fables of the West will be galloping around the Santa Cruz County Fair and amusing crowds daily from 3:30 to 7:30 pm.

he racing pigs return to the beautiful lawn near the Livestock Area, bringing thrills to crowds at the Santa Cruz County Fair.
These prestigious porkers have appeared in hundreds of television news reports and over 500 newspaper articles, and they’re coming to the Santa Cruz Fair this year for three appearances daily. Although the Alaska State Fair has been their home site for 25 years, they have a soft spot for Santa Cruz County, according to manager Bart Noll. “We first played here in 1988 and had a blast – the Santa Cruz County Fair fans are the best!” he says, adding that they’ve returned more than a dozen and a half times since.
20-minute show features four races.
Bart Noll admits that his eight pigs are a little spoiled. They live in an air-conditioned trailer, eat well and get a fresh cedar or pine bedding change twice daily. “They love what they do,” Bart says, “and they like people and are fun to work with.” Watch to see which one of the All-Alaskan Racing Pigs tries to hog the limelight at races held every day in their Fair home on the Livestock Lawn.
Two of the main ingredients for the AllAlaskan Racing Pig shows are comedy and competition. These perky pigs are natural hams, so to speak, and they’ve brought home the bacon at shows all over the western U.S. and Alaska. Another important ingredient of the race is cookies, which is the treat that the pigs are racing to win. Each race only lasts about six seconds (these pigs are fast!) and each

Ag Hort I
t is a Fair theme and Fair department marriage made in heaven. The Agriculture/Horticulture Department (Ag Hort) could not be more pleased with this year’s theme, “Come See the Berry Best.” The berry farming community has been very generous to the department donating, for example, thousands of pounds of strawberries over the years. These donations have been turned into salsas, desserts, and smoothies and have been served each year to Fair patrons. Volunteer chef, Anna Marie, works with dozens of community volunteers and high school students each year and teaching them how to prepare and serve these delicious berries. Have you ever seen a pie eating contest? Well this year
the Ag/Hort Department will be having their first pie eating contest on Friday night, September 14. Naturally the pies will be made with berries from local growers such as Cal Giant, Dole, Berry Bowl, Driscoll’s and many others. In fact, Berry Bowl has stepped up to be a building sponsor and will be supporting Friday night’s big event. This should prove to be a berry delicious time! The department will have their famous Giant Pumpkin Champions on display, as well as the heaviest zucchini, the heaviest apple, and best decorated pumpkin. Please don’t forget to take a look at the Veggie Creatures. These are the most popular entries in the department and one of the most creative. Dish entries from family
gardeners will include tomatoes, apples, herbs, onions, beans, avocados, lemons, melons, carrots, corn and so much more. The Commercial displays will contain leafy greens, artichokes, leeks, radishes, zucchini, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, peppers, mushrooms, and all kinds of locally grown berries. Ag Hort pleased to be showcasing the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau. Last year the Farm Bureau won the gold medal at the California State Fair for their exhibit illustrating the evolution of the cattle industry in the county. Not only did they win at state, but they won Santa Cruz County Fair’s Best Professional Commercial Exhibit and a Best of Show.
on the Playhouse Stage. Parents will love the fact that children who join Circus Imagination are the stars, not just props or inactive members of the audience. Circus Imagination does not end when the show is over. Moms and dads are delighted to find that their children bring home the inspiration to put on their own circus in their backyard.

Wrapping learning and positive growth in fun is at the heart of the Santa Cruz County Fair’s mission to serve area youth. Will Circus Imagination leave behind a banner reading “Mission Accomplished?” We’ll let a school principal provide the answer in a recent letter to the troupe. “No resource person or any assembly has been as outstanding as....... Circus Imagination. Several of our students are now selling tickets for their own backyard circuses. In education, success is often measured by emulation.”
Circus Imagination will be performing three times daily each day of the Fair.

Yesterday’s Farm
air goers are invited to step back into Yesterday’s Farm during the 2012 Santa Cruz County Fair. Yesterday’s Farm is produced by the Agricultural History Project (AHP) and this will be the 27th edition. They have been working all year to prepare for the Fair and hope you enjoy it.
New for this year is the opening of the railroad caboose. This Caboose has been on the site for over 15 years and through the efforts of Bill Jankowski, Bryce George, Jim Kruger, and the late Norm Perryman, the Caboose will be ready for guests when the Fair opens September 11th. This team has been working on the restoration of the Caboose for over 5 years. As most old timers know, the caboose was the last car on most trains travelling long distances until about 1980 when electronic equipment began guiding the train engineer. The AHP’s Caboose is not handicap accessible so a TV monitor will be set up nearby showing the restored interior. Also new this year at Yesterday’s Farm
is the Hop Exhibit which will be on site explaining the history of hops. During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s hops were a vital crop grown in Santa Cruz County. Coincidently there were four or more breweries in the area making beer, creating a demand for the hops. In keeping with the philosophy of bringing history to life, Yesterday’s Farm is also growing hops and they will be available for fairgoers to see up close.
By the time the Fair opens visitors will see the new Tractor Barn completed or nearly so as volunteers continue building the back wall to protect the tractor display from the elements. The Santa Cruz Chapter of the Antique Auto Club will again display eight antique cars during the fair. Fred Silva will be there with his Clydesdale horses again this year for all to observe and learn about the draft horse breed. Education days are always exciting for the children as they learn how to make wheat flour at Claudia’s Kitchen. Claudia’s Kitchen has been part of Yesterday’s Farm for 25 years and is operated by Chuck and Claudia Scott. Visitors may also ride on a hay wagon, milk a cow,
and learn how people lived before refrigeration and the grocery store. Education Days are Wednesday and Thursday of the Fair from 9 AM to Noon and organizers can always use volunteers those days. At Yesterday’s Farm you will see continuous demonstrations of old farm equipment by the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association and volunteers from the Agricultural History Project. Spinners and Weavers are back demonstrating how to make yarn and fabric and in the evening a Tractor Parade will make way through the Fairgrounds starting at 6:30 PM. Not surprisingly Yesterday’s Farm is always looking for stories from people who lived or worked in the area 70+ years ago. Please stop by and introduce yourself and someone will be happy to talk to you. Enjoy the Fair!

“We’ll have something for everybody,” said wrestling promoter and owner of Pro Wrestling Revolution Gabriel Ramirez. Ramirez, of San Jose, said he will bring in established as well as upcoming stars of wrestling to the fairgrounds. “I don’t have to wrestle so I have the easy job,” he said. “We live in a huge mixed society in this area, so we’ll have both the American style of wrestling and the Spanish, called Lucha Libre. We’re bringing the big stars of Mexico here. The Lucha Libre style of wrestling is a little different from the American in that it focuses more on acrobatics and super heroes who often wear masks and capes.

They use the ropes and it’s often high-flying,” Ramirez added. The venue will give audiences a chance to see American-style wrestling stars and those who are on the way up to major stardom in the sport. “It’s an incredible lineup, with many faces from around the world,” Ramirez said. “We’ll have from 15 to 20 wrestlers in the different events and it will be quite a mixture of talent. Some of the wrestlers haven’t gotten that big break yet, but they soon will.” “In wrestling, you have to keep the product fresh with new talent and plenty of acrobatics with super heroes,” Ramirez said. “That’s what brings in the kids.” Ramirez, who runs a school for wrestling in San Jose called the Pro Wrestling Revolution Training Facility, said some of the athletes have been in the sport for years and perform all over the world, while others are getting established as top names. “We’ll have a good amount of local talent in the ring, athletes who live in this area,” he said.
Wrestling starts at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16 on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Amphitheater Stage.
The Lost Trailers
Stokes Nielson and Ryder Lee began writing and producing music together while both were attending Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Their first album together was the selfissued The Story of the New Age Cowboy in 2000. Initially, Ryder and Stokes worked with a bass guitarist and a drummer, forming a group known as Stokes Nielson & The Lost Trailers (later shortened to The Lost Trailers). The name was derived from the fact that the band’s equipment trailers had been stolen on three separate occasions. In 2002, The Lost Trailers recorded their second album which of course just had to be titled Trailer Trash. Several years of albums and chart singles followed as The Lost Trailers rose from a hard touring regional act to snagging Three ACM Nominations and several Top 20 hits on country radio while opening for Sugarland, Taylor Swift, Jamey Johnson and many others. In 2011 singer/songwriter Jason Wyatt joined Stokes Nielson, re-launching The Lost Trailers. They are currently preparing a new release which was partly recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. The Lost Trailers bring more than a decade of exciting cheering crowds to the Amphitheater Stage on Wednesday night, September 12, at the Santa Cruz County Fair. www.thelosttrailers.com
J. T. Hodges
For his first single, J. T. Hodges has come out of the gate with a song about hunting. It does not involve bird calls or camouflage, but rather the most universal pursuit known to man. In a rollicking song that recalls a hot night in “Hunt You Down,” catch-and-release never sounded so steamy. Country fans are wanting to hunt Hodges down too after getting a listen to this infectious summer single. Besides “Hunt You Down,” there’s plenty more to be pursued in JT Hodges as fans are quickly finding out. Behind those baby blue eyes lies the seasoned soul of a country-rock classicist. When stepping into a Nashville studio to record, most singers would have been a little cowed. Not Hodges who, if anything, might have experienced a sense of déjà vu, since he was raised in a recording studio… literally. “My family started Fort Worth’s first multi-track recording studio,” Hodges explains, referring to Buffalo Sound Studios, a facility that played host to artists as disparate as T Bone Burnett and Michael Bolton. Were the kids allowed to hang around? “Oh, it was part of the chores!” he laughs. He had a country cover band to help pay his way through grad school. It was while he was looking for a new band member that a 17-year-old girl auditioned for and got the gig in his band and also got the guy. And they both got a boy who shared their consuming love of all kinds of music. J. T. Hodges brings his all-consuming love to the Amphitheater Stage Saturday evening at 7:30 PM.

Antsy Is Back!
e could urge Flamingo Heads to get ready but they’ve probably been ready since last year. Antsy McClain & The Trailer Park Troubadours return to the Santa Cruz County Fair Thursday September 13. And to explain to the uninitiated, his fans call themselves Flamingo Heads.
If there’s anything like an American musical original, Antsy McClain is it, with his homespun humor, and family-andfriends-oriented ballads commenting on the absurdities of life, often with the theme
“My life is my art,” McClain said. “I’m painting my life one day at a time. As I spend time with my wife and children, or go on the road to new places to make new friends, as I write a new song or paint or draw something for people to enjoy, this is my life. I’m enjoying the ride.”
McClain grew up in Ohio, taught college art in Kentucky, and moved to Nashville in 1993. He sidled into the music field after working as an award-winning illustrator and designer for book publishers. He describes his music as a generous blend of rockabilly, folk-based rock and rhythm and blues swing, all with a country twang. “I spend two hours entertaining an audience,” he said. “Entertainment is all about having a good time. I describe my music as humor with heart.”
Divas of the Decades: A Tribute to Women in Rock
O
n Tuesday September 11th, two “Divas”, Mary Ellen Duell and Amanda Dieck, come to the Santa Cruz County Fair for opening day. The Divas of the Decades’ performances pay tribute to the female voices of pop and rock throughout the ages. The “Divas” have been playing for over two decades, and are backed by “The Garage Band” made up of the best musicians in the Bay Area. The “Divas” and their band will be sure to keep fairgoers entertained with their different musical styles and sounds.
The Divas of the Decades will perform at the Santa Cruz County Fair on Tuesday September 11th on the Amphitheater Stage starting at 7:30 pm.

McClain uses witticisms and observations from the perspective of small-town America, staging his shows from a mythical trailer park called Pine View Heights, the kind of place where he actually grew up. He said his creative process of song writing does not come because he mechanically sits down like at an 8 to 5 job. It has to come from inspiration. “I used to write in the shower, but it got soggy,” he said. “Actually, I don’t just start at 9 a.m. because that’s contrived. I have to be jarred into something, as a husband or a father, or a friend. It has to be something important that somebody’s going through, and it has to be universal so people can identify with it, even if it’s funny.” A possible successor to Will Rogers as an American folk humorist, McClain’s poetry, heartfelt ballads and humorous tales have been praised by such entertainment notables as Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Lindsay Buckingham and David Wilcox. He has also collaborated with other luminaries including Waylon Jennings, Tommy Smothers, guitarist Tommy Emmanuel and cowboy poet Baxter Black. Despite all this, he said he’s not an extrovert. “I like to write a song where we can either laugh at ourselves, or think life is short,” he said. “We’re all in this together. So, let’s all enjoy the ride.”
Antsy McClain appears on the Amphitheater Stage, Thursday, July 13 at 7:30 PM

White Album Ensemble (revised)
t began as a Luthier’s* dream, to put together a team of top local musicians to perform the Beatles’ “White Album” live, in a theatre setting with lights, dance, and a full-screen video presentation. After a string of sold out local performances, including the Rio Center for the Performing Arts in Santa Cruz and the Henry Mello Center near the Fairgrounds in Watsonville, the group decided to take the show on the road. In putting together the show The White Album Ensemble (WAE) has adopted the attitude of “What would the Beatles do, if they performed this song live?” That is really the essence of White Album Live, however there is no attempt to be a “look alike” or “tribute” band; this is more like a symphony performing Bach or Mozart. With a nod to the Beatles stance of standing for peace, love, and non-violence- as well as WAE members’ own beliefs, the group has set aside portions of concert proceeds for music in school. For programs such as “Guitars, not Guns,” a pro youth, anti-
