Santa Cruz County Businesses Rely on You to go:

Shopping & Dining Locally !

Remember the joy of going from store to store to find that perfect gift? Somehow many of us have gotten caught up in the supposed convenience of shopping for the lowest price at some mega-store or on their website. But have you ever had to take or send something back that did not fit ... or didn’t work ... or maybe just disappeared and never arrived?

Local is the way to go.

These days, local businesses need the boost from the local community to keep up their mojo going. Our local businesses are looking forward to selling their wares to “their people”! Get up and go to a locally owned and operated store or business that has real live people providing real live service. Local businesses where you can try on or turn on or try out their products and then take them back to return or replace without having to wait forever for your refund. And, if you prefer to shop on the Internet, more and more of our many of our locally owned and operated businesses have websites that you can purchase goods and services from. This provides the opportunity to deal both online and in-person with people who are your neighbors and live in your community and boost our local economy. Each day we see and hear the ever-present ads of national chains, but we don’t hear and see the many important values independent locally owned businesses provide us both as an individual and as a community. New “big box” retailers that replace locally owned businesses often create economic costs exceeding benefits: the loss of existing jobs and the cost of an increased infrastructure being the top two. When asked to name our favorite restaurant, cafe, or shop, we almost always cite a unique local business. We say we embrace the idea of distinctive businesses with local character, but then often forget their survival depends on our patronage so let’s so up for them. Those who raise funds for local non-profits can tell you that locally owned businesses provide most of their support. Not all local businesses are perfect, and “big box” retailers are not bad, but the overall impact is obvious: local businesses play a vital role in our community that corporate chains seldom do. Make a difference this holiday season, Shop, Dine and Experience all Santa Cruz County has to offer by staying Local! %

We have your perfect holiday gift!

DRAWN2ART

19C Rancho Del Mar, Aptos, CA 95003 • (831) 661-5652 www.drawn2artstudios.com/studios

Our Philosophy & Approach: Drawn2Art’s philosophy is “creativity follows mastery,” and that a strong foundation of artistic skills will enable students to eventually follow any artistic path they choose. In the same way that the great Masters became proficient in classical drawing and painting first, so do our students. Instruction, coupled with practice, will bring about an independent and confident artist. Drawn2Art uses a step-by-step method to build skills. Starting with simpler two-dimensional drawing, students then progress to adding tone and color values to create threedimensionality. We do not promote rote teaching. We promote purposeful teaching. Our goal is always to continue to raise students’ competency from lesson to lesson.

Christy Licker opened Caroline’s Non Profit Thrift Shop in June of 2010, just three years after the death of her daughter, Caroline, who passed away at the age of 16. Her hope was to honor the life of Caroline by donating money to local nonprofits with programs/services for children and their families with the goal of easing the fundraising burden for these non-profits. Our volunteers commit to regularly scheduled shifts, with some even creating handmade items for Caroline’s. Caroline’s is 100% volunteer powered!

Adopt-A-Family T his Holiday Want to jump-start that feeling of holiday joy you had as a child? Then, join a cherished local tradition: giving the gift of joy through the Volunteer Center’s Adopt-a-Family program. Bringing joy to a child is one of the greatest feelings of all, that embodies what this season is all about.

Adopt-A Family is a partnership between the Volunteer Center, local social service agencies, and YOU. Together, we fill the holiday wish lists of the most vulnerable families in our community. This year, there are more than 1,500 children on the Adopt-a-Family list — more than ever before. Children like Sabria, whose family lost their home in the Pajaro floods, or Jesse and Evan, two pre-teen boys who, with their father, just found permanent housing after several months of homelessness. With your support, every single one of these children will have a joyful holiday. Here are four ways you can help: 1. Adopt a Family: Visit the Adopt-a-Family website and choose a family to support. Each family has a gift list with essentials for young children like diapers or nursing

Fruit so fresh, it’s still on the tree when you order!

tops to hoodies and headphones for teens. You’ll do the shopping from the family wish list and deliver the toys to our warehouse in December.

2. Donate and Let the Elves Shop for You: Simply make a gift online, and let our dedicated team of volunteer elves select, wrap, and deliver your gifts to the families. 3. Organize a Toy Drive: Turn your annual holiday party into a force for good. Invite your guests to bring toys, essentials, or grocery gift cards. It’s a festive way to multiply the joy! We’ll even provide you with a gift list to share with your party guests. 4. Give Your Time and Expertise: The Volunteer Center’s Holiday Volunteer Guide offers dozens of opportunities to support local families and your favorite nonprofit organizations. Find an activity that fills your heart and resonates with your spirit of giving. This holiday, let’s spread joy across Santa Cruz County. Adopt a family, donate, volunteer. It’s easy to get involved, and you’ll feel good doing it! % See https://scvolunteercenter.org/four-ways-to-give-joy-thisholiday-season/

Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre Presents “The Nutcracker ” with Live Orchestra By Betty Sanchez Photos left to right: Jana Marcus & Steve DiBartolomeo

For the 21st time, Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre presents its annual “Nutcracker” at the Civic Auditorium with a live orchestra. Led by Music Director Pamela Martin, the artistry of 52 professional musicians fills the auditorium with Tchaikovsky’s ebullient score. The SCBT production is a holiday tradition for many Santa Cruzans. Recorded music does not compare to the experience of listening to this masterpiece being played live. When these two classical performance arts of Dance and Music collaborate, the production becomes much more beautiful and expressive. The Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre performances feature guest stars and SCBT alumni Melody Mennite and Lucien Postlewaite as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Melody is a principal dancer with Houston Ballet, and Lucien is a principal dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet. Each bring their unique and formidable talents to this production, in turn inspiring cast members and audience alike. Unique chemistry — having been partners in their formative years with SCBT — enhances every step they take together. Supporting these stars and the pre-professional SCBT Company dancers are additional guest artists from New Ballet, Tango Hayato Fujita-Gomez and Jack Concordia. Local dancers from all over the county round out the talented cast of over 50 dancers and character artists, several on the cusp of professional careers.

24 – Holiday 2023 Gift & Dining Guide

To honor the history and contribution of local Chinese immigrants in Santa Cruz, SCBT will feature a new Chinese divertissement in Act II, a traditional Chinese Dragon dance. Supported by the Ow Family for years, through the training and professional career of Ow descendant Lauryn Winterhalder, SCBT is proud to honor the history of these settlers who helped make Santa Cruz what it is today. Many “Nutcracker” productions are removing stereotypes of the different nationalities featured in Clara’s visit to the Candy Kingdom. SCBT endeavors to honor Chinese ethnicity and the value of its culture as a repayment for their dedication to the shaping of Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre celebrates the start of its 40th season with “The Nutcracker” with live orchestra at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Performances are Saturday, December 9 at 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm and Sunday, December 10 at 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased at SantaCruzTickets.com or by calling (831) 420-5260 or in person at the Civic Box Office, 307 Church Street. %

Stocking Stuffers Budget Friendly Gift Ideas for the Whole Family

No one seems exactly certain when the tradition of hanging stockings at the holidays actually began. But by 1822, Clement Clark Moore’s famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (better known as “The Night Before Christmas”) had been published. Today there are few children who don’t recognize the words, “The stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.” Despite its popularity, the Christmas stocking is often overlooked during the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping. Hence, stocking stuffers are usually purchased last. Fortunately, there are many gift ideas that are sure to please without draining an already strained budget. Some of the more popular stuffers to consider include: ❆ Traditional Goodies ❆ Clothes & Accessories ❆ School Supplies

❆ Mini Games or Card Games

❆ Arts and Crafts

❆ Gift Cards or Certificates

❆ Traditional Toys

❆ Tickets to Concerts or Hobby Classes

To enhance the excitement, wrap the stocking stuffers. Pack the stocking full, and don’t forget to let one or two items stick out from the top to tempt curious eyes, and enjoy your holidays with friends and family! % 34 – Holiday 2023 Gift & Dining Guide

Dave Baskerville The Parish Pub

The Parish Pub in Aptos was started in 2017 by four friends who have worked in Santa Cruz restaurants and bars for over 20 years. They decided to start a sister pub to the already established Parish Publick House on the West side of Santa Cruz. Joel, Nate, and Erik, teamed up with their friend Karen to create a service oriented pub with a neighborhood feel. They have an emphasis on warm service, quality fresh food, a comfortable family friendly atmosphere, and the best beer and cocktails they can serve. The Parish Pub Aptos offers to go food, patio dining and inside seating. The kitchen has been led by Chef Dave Baskerville who has increased the delicious “small bite” offerings to offer quality food and flavors. Bar manager Melissa Stoll has continued to scout exceptional beers and to make a fun and innovative craft cocktail menu. In addition, the Parish Pub was an early adopter of the Impossible Burger and offers many other vegetarian and healthy options to ensure there is something for everyone.

Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery Walk far enough out on the Santa Cruz Wharf and the land falls away, replaced by a sense of ocean and sky in all directions. On the wharf’s lower decks, sea lions bask in the sun and bellow contentedly at one another. Seagulls wheel in the sky or hop along the wharf railing, pestering meditative fishermen. To the west, surfers ride the glistening waves of world-famous Steamer Lane like an impossibly beautiful dream. It is out here, near the last bend in the wharf, that you will find Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery, Voted Best Restaurant on the Wharf, Best Outdoor Dining and Best Craft Cocktails in Santa Cruz, Sentinel Readers Choice, 2021. Entering Makai is like being hit with a warm wave of pure tiki before swimming out into its ocean. It is a place of island melodies and intoxicating aromas. Tiki statues silently grin and howl from every nook and cranny. Plus, the bar rotates, making it arguably the coolest place to get a drink in the whole Monterey Bay region. If you really need a vacation, but only have a few hours, we invite you to escape to Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery, the fully immersive tiki restaurant and bar on the Santa Cruz Wharf.

New Leaf Community Markets Rooted in the greater good since 1985. Since 1985, we’ve been deeply rooted in the Central Coast communities, and that bond has only grown stronger over the past 38 years. Our commitment is straightforward: to make thoughtful choices that benefit both our customers and the world around us. And, while that might sound like a tall order, it has become second nature to us after all these years. We prioritize ingredients and products from our local neighbors, often within just 100 miles. Beyond the shelves, we’ve collaborated with local partners who champion sustainable and community-driven initiatives, and together, we’re making a positive impact. To date, we’ve given back over $2 million to organizations aligned with our mission. As a heartfelt thanks to our community, we’re thrilled to reinvest 10% of our after-tax profits back into the hands of those who support us. It’s our way of fostering the spirit of giving, year-round. At New Leaf, it’s more than just grocery shopping. It’s about community, commitment, and the shared belief in doing what’s right. Let’s continue this journey together.

The Hideout The Hideout Restaurant opened its doors in 2015 and has since become a community favorite! Owners Pete and Lisa Vomvolakis and Austin and Rachel Welch, with the help of family and friends, transformed an original 1930’s Aptos home into a beautiful new restaurant and bar. Just four years after opening, The Hideout was destroyed by a fire in 2019. With overwhelming community love and support, The Hideout was rebuilt into the beautiful restaurant it is today. Pete and Austin have both worked in the local restaurant industry for years and are well known in the community. With the help of locally renowned chefs, Antonio Gomez and Serafin Pantoja, The Hideout prides itself on creating classic American comfort foods: delicious appetizers and small plates to share, soups, large salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood, pasta, and other hearty entrees – something for everyone! The Hideout is a family friendly restaurant where you can sit at the 700 year old Redwood bar and catch a game on one of the seven large screen TV’s, enjoy the outside atmosphere under a heated patio, cozy up to the fireplace in the main dining room or host a large party in our semi private Redwood Room. Pete, Austin and staff take pride in creating a welcoming atmosphere, giving their customers friendly and attentive service, and offering quality food and drinks at a fair price. After visiting The Hideout you definitely won’t go away hungry! Our redwood room can accommodate up to 28 guests (no rental/room fee). Gift cards are available in house and e-gift cards are available on our website.

Holiday Eggnog Recipe

Directions: Combine milk, cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and cloves in a saucepan over the lowest heat setting; stir and heat for 5 minutes. Increase heat to mediumlow and slowly bring to a boil. Remove from the heat. Whisk egg yolks in a large bowl until light yellow in color. Add sugar and whisk until light and fluffy. Pour some of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking quickly to avoid scrambling the eggs. Continue adding hot milk and whisking to combine until all milk is incorporated.

Pour the mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick, about 3 minutes; do not allow the mixture to boil. When you think of Holiday drinks, eggnog always comes to mind. Following is a simple and tasty recipe which is easy to make and fun to share. Ingredients: ❆ 4 cups milk ❆ 1-½ teaspoons ground cinnamon ❆ 5 whole cloves ❆ 2-½ teaspoons vanilla extract, divided ❆ 12 large egg yolks ❆ 1-½ cups white sugar ❆ 4 cups Half and Half ❆ 2 cups light rum, brandy, or bourbon (Optional) ❆ ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
