My Personal Story of Water Conservation Even with some of the recent rains, there is no question that our region is in the midst of one of the worst droughts on record. Rainfall totals are some of the lowest known and we are shifting into a new way of water consumption and supply needs in our area. The Soquel Creek Water District, which provides water to much of my supervisorial district, has been actively promoting additional conservation measures and researching ways to augment the water supply.

Public Park Seeks Private Sponsors

The Capitola City Council recently authorized a multiuse recreational park at the City-owned McGregor Drive property, located near the entrance to New Brighton State Beach. The new park will have three components; skate park, dog park and bike park. In an effort to meet the needs of the community, each of these elements is to be enjoyed by users of all ages.

The plan calls for a 9,500 square foot bike pump track

on the north end of the property, kids’ play area, seating area visible from all locations, a 10,300 square foot skateboard park fronting McGregor Drive and a 12,500 square foot dog park located in the rear of the property. Parking for 30 vehicles will be at the southern portion of the lot with a gated entrance. The City will fund and install the basic infrastructure; ADA accessible paths, porta-potties, water service, parking and fencing. ... continued on page 4

VALENTINE’S DAY 2014 Now our love is still strong though our children are grown And the grandchildren take up our time.

I remember us then ... I remember us when I am sitting here writing this rhyme.

Sure the times and the tides brought us close in the days When our journey had hardly begun.

But we’ve weathered life’s storms through the dark and unknown And my love, you are still number one!

But time sands us.

We recognize faults in ourselves Learn the power of forgiveness Open the past to understand the now Smoothing our way to peace By daily choosing to hear The voice of commitment whispering “Stay for the beauty—for the forever.”

And we do.

Now we are left with these pieces Fragments soft and gentle to the touch Clarity clouded by the wearing of our battles Colors muted by time Treasures of a different sort Now held together by an outside source, They catch a light that is not our own And remind us of where we have been.

I have always loved sea glass collecting (and now do some art with it!) but this poem came out of the pain and difficulty of this last year of our marriage, which we both would say we barely survived. One of the most difficult things to do is stay when everything we believed in looks shattered.

Without corrective exercises this may lead to kyphosis: an excessive rounding of shoulders that arises from repeatedly leaning forward, gazing down at the screen and holding the device in your hand in a supine position (facing up). I usually describe “kyphosis” by drawing the image of the character from the Simpsons “Mr. Burns”.

Does this sound familiar? Look around and you will see many smart phone users with the “Mr. Burns” syndrome. Are you one of them? There is hope! Here are four simple smart moves you can do NOW to help reverse and prevent this debilitating condition. Remember this acronym, R.A.M.P. Rest: Avoid 30 minutes or more of continuously looking down at your device.

Awareness: Be mindful of any neck, mid or lower back pain. This is a signal to rest and/or to do some corrective exercises.

Move: Specific movements can go a long way in relaxing overactive muscles and improve joint integrity.

Posture: Sit up straight! Stand tall.

Consider getting a posture pal, a friend who will tell you when you are slouching.

Here are four simple exercises you can do NOW! 1: Clearing the neuro pathways.

Three wrist movements for neck tightness.

Keep this stance for all three wrist movements. Stand tall and laterally extend your arm to side at shoulder height. Look straight and set your palm position as if you are holding up a wall. Hold for 10 seconds.

Next, flex the wrist down palm facing you.

Hold for 10 seconds. Lastly, have your palm facing the wall upside down, finger tips facing the floor- keep flexed for 10 seconds.

2: Shoulder blades exercises. Arms extended out in front of you with palms facing up.

Slowly, extend through your fingertips and open up the chest by bringing the arms back as if the thumbs are going to touch the wall behind you.

Stressed by Work-Life Balance? Just Exercise

Any spurt of activity can keep stress levels down and confidence up

eeling conflicted by the push-pull of work and family life? New research suggests that regular exercise can help balance out those feelings.

Researchers examined the responses of 476 working adults who were surveyed about their exercise behavior and their confidence in handling work-family conflicts. Those who exercised regularly seemed to experience an increased feeling of competence that carried over into work and home roles, the study authors said.

“If, for example, you go for a two-mile jog or walk 10 flights of steps at work and feel good about yourself for doing that, it will translate and carry over into other areas of life,” said study author Russell Clayton, an assistant professor of management at Saint Leo University in Florida.

“We found that [participants] who exercised felt good about themselves, that they felt that they could accomplish tough tasks, and that carried over into work

Volumes of research have shown that exercise lowers mental and physical stress levels, but few studies have focused on whether this stress reduction helps empower individuals to better manage their work-life balance.

Clayton said the study originated as a “pet project” after he realized his own adherence to exercise gave him perspective on integrating work and life. Also involved in the study were researchers from Saint Louis University, University of Houston-Victoria and Illinois State University.

Clayton acknowledged that the research method the study authors used — having

respondents answer questions and then tallying the answers through a mathematical technique — did not offer hard numbers for the results.

Just over half (55 percent) of the study participants were women. In addition, the study noted, participants worked an average of 40 hours weekly and their average age was 41. About 29 percent had at least one child under age 18 living at home.

While the study found a link between physical activity and reports of greater empowerment at home and at work, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

“But the associations between exercise and work-life balance are there, and they’re very strong,” Clayton said.

For those who don’t exercise regularly, the idea of adding that regimen to a busy

schedule to improve stress levels may seem counterintuitive, Clayton noted.

But he advocates the idea of “stolen moments” for exercise that add up, such as climbing the stairs for five minutes or doing jumping jacks in 30-second spurts.

“We hope our research can be a grain of sand in the beach of evidence we have to push corporations ... to encourage employees to exercise,” he added.

Dr. Natalie Digate Muth, spokesperson for the American Council on Exercise, said the study extends the evidence that physical activity offers benefits beyond the obvious.

“People should think of it as a kind of investment. If you put some time into physical activity,” said Muth, “you may be active for 30 minutes a day, but the productivity and mental focus you’re going to get out of it is going to far exceed what you put into it, from a work and family perspective.” n HealthDay News

••• Loch Lomond Recreation Area Closed SANTA CRUZ — The City of Santa Cruz Water Department announced today that it would not be opening the Loch Lomond Reservoir to recreation this spring, due to the continued critically dry conditions. Normally the Recreation Area opens March 1.

Newell Creek, which drains into Loch Lomond, is at historically low levels currently. The reservoir’s steep, muddy banks are covered with stumps from the original clear cut and currently present a hazard to users of the recreation area and the rental boat fleet. The marina itself is unable to function at water levels below 564 ft, which is only six feet lower than the current water level.

“Of even greater concern,” said Chris Berry, Watershed Compliance Manager, “is the potential threat of wildfire from the extremely dry fuel conditions in the watershed.”

Should conditions change and the water level rise to where recreation services can be safely provided, the City may at that time consider opening the Recreation Area for the remainder of the season.

The Ombudsman Program of Santa Cruz and San Benito is conducting Volunteer Training from April 10 through the 26th. Ombudsman training includes 36 hours of classes, 15 hours of internship and certification by the state of California. With the Program Coordinator’s supervision, volunteer Ombudsmen work with facility residents and staff to problem solve at the lowest level whenever possible, monitor facilities and advocate for appropriate actions to meet the residents’ needs.

With 60% of long-term care facility residents having no family or visitors to support them, the Ombudsman is often their only resource available to advocate for and protect their rights while ensuring their safety and wellbeing with dignity and respect.

n March 12 at 10:30 a.m., the Porter Memorial Library located at 3050 Porter Street welcomes to our series local authors, Donna Mekis and Kathryn Mekis Miller. They will be speaking about their book, Blossoms into Gold: The Croatians in the Pajaro Valley.

Of all the immigrants who flocked to California in the last two hundred years, probably the least known are the Croatians of the Dalmatian Coast.

Often identified as Austrians, Slavonians or Dalmatians, they came from a glorious background of international traders, sailors, and political thinkers few people in America knew about, and brought with them knowledge

that would change the way the United States did business. At the same time, they transported their customs and beliefs to their new home and established a way of life that was vibrant and rich in traditional folkways.

Blossoms into Gold tells their story for the first time, from their fabled past to their economic innovations in the Pajaro Valley.

Enriched with over 181 rare photos and illustrations, the book records an

important segment of American history.

Donna F. Mekis and Kathryn Mekis Miller are the granddaughters of Croatian immigrants who immigrated from Konavle, Croatia, to Watsonville, California, in 1901. Their father, Andrew Mekis, was born in Watsonville’s Croatian colony in 1920. The two sisters were raised in Santa Cruz and spent frequent Sunday afternoons with their Croatian grandparents and family in Watsonville.

The public is invited to the free “Meet the Author Fireside Chats” at the Porter Memorial Library. These are informal coffee hours set around the fireplace.

They feature local authors who discuss their works and answer questions from the audience. The authors also sell and autograph their books. Caltrans Signs Urge Drivers to Save Water

SACRAMENTO — In response to the state’s severe drought, Caltrans launched a statewide educational campaign on the state’s highways, urging all Californians to conserve water. California’s more than 700 electronic highway signs now display the following water conservation message when there are no critical emergency, traffic safety or Amber Alert messages, Caltrans stated.

SERIOUS DROUGHT HELP SAVE WATER “Caltrans has already taken action to sharply restrict water usage,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “Using our highway message signs, we are asking California’s 24 million drivers to join us in this important effort.”

Caltrans will support the www. saveourh20.org campaign by using California’s electronic Changeable Message Signs along the highways to raise awareness of the severe drought and encourage Californians to conserve water. The signs will be activated when there are no critical emergency or traffic safety messages or Amber Alerts.

As a department responsible for 30,000 acres of irrigated landscaping, Caltrans is making dramatic reductions in its irrigation activities. Effective this month, Caltrans will take the following actions: • Cut statewide irrigation activities by at least 50 percent.

• Delay all new landscaping projects in

severely impacted areas until the next rainy season to preserve the water supply. Postpone all non-essential highway planting.

• Cease watering in areas of the state suffering from the most severe drought impacts.

• Expand its use of smart irrigation technologies, which turn off automatically when it rains. Such systems can reduce water usage by as much as 50-60 percent.

• Use recycled water for irrigation and other activities whenever possible.

• Forgo washing vehicles except when necessary for safety.

The department is taking these conservation steps because the historic drought threatens all Californians with a dangerously dry summer and protecting the public and water supply is a top priority.

With California facing its driest year on record, Governor Brown declared a drought State of Emergency last month and directed state officials to take all necessary actions to prepare for water shortages.

In January, the state took action to conserve water in numerous Northern California reservoirs to meet minimum needs for operations impacting the environment and the economy: • The Department of Transportation is cutting water usage along California’s roadways by 50 percent.

• The State Water Resources Control Board announced it would work with hydropower generators and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to preserve water in California reservoirs.

• The California Department of Public Health identified and offered assistance to communities at risk of severe drinking water shortages and is

working with other state and local agencies to develop solutions for vulnerable communities.

• CAL FIRE hired additional firefighters and is continuously adjusting staffing throughout the state to help address the increased fire threat due to drought conditions.

SC Ballet Features Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band

very spring, Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre offers the community a concert that runs the gamut of possible ballet styles–from favorite classical work based on original choreography to ballet with decidedly modern twists.

This year the Company is also adding the live music of Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band led by pianist Eddie Mendenhall, and a story ballet based on Thornton Wilder ’s “Our Town.” Artistic Director Robert Kelley is also bringing back the compelling Ilana Goldman, who is cho-

reographing for the Senior Company for the second time.

This is a particularly busy season for Kelley as he works with neo-classical style ballet for his Premiere: Point Well Taken; with Latin swing played by the Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band; and with the story of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town set to selections from Aaron Copeland’s oeuvre.

For Point Well Taken, Kelley was inspired by the sublime partnering abilities and other strengths of Nashon Marden, Molly Winslow Hanson and Johanna Butterworth. He cites their ability to translate movement from the music of Alberto Iglesias, which he describes as haunting. Neoclassical ballet allows the dancers’ movement to become the main artistic medium. It is often driven by the musical score and is free of the overly dramatized aesthetic. This figures into the costuming as well as the dancing.

My Personal Story of Water Conservation

E

ven with some of the recent rains, there is no question that our region is in the midst of one of the worst droughts on record. Rainfall totals are some of the lowest known and we are shifting into a new way of water consumption and supply needs in our area. The Soquel Creek Water District, which provides water to much of my supervisorial district, has been actively promoting additional conservation measures and researching ways to augment the water supply. As we move forward, a balance of these approaches will provide the safest, most reliable water system possible.

The Soquel Creek Water District has set some potential targets for water usage (about 53 gallons per person/day) and I wanted to see how my household could better meet these targets. The District offers free in-home water conservation assessments. I signed up for one and learned how easy it was to reduce my water to a sustainable level and what each of my appliances, showerheads, toilets and landscape watering used.

All of my interior appliances and fixtures have been replaced with low water versions. In fact, the District offers generous rebates to customers interested in making the simple shift to low flow showerheads, washing machines and toilets.

For my house, nearly 50% of my water usage was occurring outside. I couldn’t believe how much water I was using to water my plants. I have an automatic watering system that was set up to water three times/week for 10 minutes/time.

Approximately half of the system is on drip irrigation and half is on regular sprinklers.

Simply reducing the amount of time and overall frequency will more than accomplish my water reduction goals. During the visit, the water conservation specialist was able to point out which of my plants were drought tolerant and which plants I could consider replacing. In addition, I was given advice on how to best program the automatic watering system to conserve water (and not overwater my plants).

On January 28, I joined with all of the major water districts in an event at the County Courthouse to show that we are unified in desire to have a regional and collaborative solution to what is a new water paradigm in our area. All of the districts emphasized the need to explore additional water supply options coupled with improved conservation.

Soquel Creek Water District customers are already some of the top conservers in the state and on average use 50% of the water of an average California water user.

But even with these great conservation numbers more needs to be done, which shows the advantage of exploring supplemental supplies and having the District help you with a Water Use Efficiency Survey. Camp Is for Every Child

W

atching my son after he returned from summer camp was the first hint that remarkable growth was underway. He was engaged, giving, and confident. Viewing the camp expe-

rience as a respite from the real world is somehow to miss the point—it is the real world—simply getting dirty, trying to pull harder so your team wins, finding the friend you always wished for, being yourself—it’s the time of your life and the promise of the future.

As a parent, I constantly ask where do children have their mental, personal, emotional, and physical needs nurtured? Where will they learn to get along with others, to take safe risks, to deal with conflict in a constructive way that encourages them to be creative, to explore and discover, to learn by actively doing, to try—to fail and try again? In the camp community, I find what I intuitively know as a parent—to be a positive, productive adult one needs the opportunity to truly experience childhood… that is how one grows.

Camps enjoy the opportunity of working their magic with all of our children: the gifted athlete, the budding musician, the curious naturalist, the first-time camper, and the child with a disability. The idea that camp is for every child isn’t just a pipe dream—it’s a reality.

And one that parents and children celebrate and the American Camp Association supports by promoting safe, fun, and developmentally-appropriate experiences in the camp setting.

The entire experience began with a single camp—The Gunnery Camp in 1861.

As I write, I am buoyed by the recognition

of just how dynamically this idea has taken flight. Over 11.5 million children, youth, and adults will participate in camp in 2013. Overall, the numbers continue to grow, and this popular movement testifies so loudly to the extraordinary benefits that camp provides to our young people— responsibility, exploration, engagement, not to mention the spiritual dimension of the camp experience.

Is camp quantifiable? Maybe not—but as a parent, I can only react with extreme pleasure as my son displayed those acts of kindness and generosity of spirit that follow so naturally from his time at camp.

His chance to develop and grow was marked by constant changes—our camps meet those challenges every day of every session and that’s why doing what we do becomes so vital.

Camp is about firsts—a first campfire outdoors, leading a pony, catching a frog, enjoying the evening stories, and being chosen—chosen to be part of a community that values each child and his or her special gifts. It’s about making memories and honoring the traditions of those who have come before. Children are alight with the idea that their acorn hangs from a rafter where their parents, aunts, and uncles placed theirs so many years before.

The American Camp Association has grown through its commitment to research and education in the field of child development. Santa Cruz Polar Plunge for Special Olympics

SANTA CRUZ — On Saturday, March 15, hundreds of Northern Californians will brave the chilly and choppy waters of Pacific Ocean – all in the name of Special Olympics. Donned in costumes but without the protection of wet suits, Special Olympics athletes and their supporters will jump into winter-chilled waters of the Pacific Ocean at Santa Cruz’s Main Beach for the Santa Cruz Polar Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Northern California. In its second year at the Santa Cruz location, this weekend’s Polar Plunge is one of 10 Polar Plunge events hosted by Special Olympics Northern California this winter.

Plungers, which include individuals, companies, law enforcement, families and schools, are asked to raise a minimum of $125 - which provides one season of sports instruction and competition at no cost to the Special Olympics athlete. One of Special Olympics Northern California’s preeminent events, the San Francisco Polar Plunge raises funds that directly allow Northern California Special Olympics athletes to participate in regional, national and international competitions all the while promoting acceptance, building bonds of friendship and unity and creating lifelong memories.

Among those taking the Polar Plunge on March 15 will be members of local law enforcement agencies such as Santa Cruz Police Department and Scotts Valley Police Department, along with schools from across Northern California along with corporate teams from Coca-Cola, Canepa, Environmental Roofing, PG&E and more.

In 2013, the Polar Plunges had more than 1,400 Plungers who raised over

$450,000 for the athletes of the Special Olympics Northern California and Nevada. Special Olympics Northern California is supported entirely by events like the Polar Plunge, local business and individual gifts, and receives minimal state or federal funding.

Through a rigorous and open proposal process, the firm ELS Architecture and Urban Design was selected to lead the project, with funding provided by a grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. ELS will be tasked with looking at practical and affordable ways to enhance the use of this historical building as a performing arts and cultural center.

Because a number of sports and floor-focused events have moved, or are considering moving, to the new Kaiser Permanente Arena, the Leadership Team felt there was an opportunity to focus renovation planning on performing arts and cultural activities.

Project Manager Jim Brown conducted the user needs assessment that suggests a wide range of improvements that would make the facility more comfortable for patrons, accessible for performers, desirable to potential producers, and cost efficient for the City, which owns and operates the Civic Auditorium.

In 2012, a Civic Planning Leadership Team was formed. Through the Cabrillo Festival, the team applied for and received funding from the Packard Foundation to conduct a needs assessment of current and potential Civic Auditorium users, and to

design conceptual plans for a future Civic Auditorium renovation.

“The Civic Auditorium has such a rich history in our community, and we are thrilled to be working with ELS to reimagine and reinvigorate a venue, unlike any other in our county, where our community gathers for so many diverse events,” said Ellen Primack, Executive Director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and chair of the Civic Planning Leadership Team.

“I’m pleased to see this project moving forward for the benefit of all Santa Cruz’ residents,” said Martin Bernal, Santa Cruz’ City Manager.

“A vision for an enhanced Civic that further supports our community and our economic vitality downtown is very much welcomed.”

The Leadership Team selected ELS based on the firm’s deep experience in historic theater renovation. Two past ELS projects include renovation of the California Theater in San Jose and the San Jose Civic Auditorium, a facility from the same era and with the same basic structure as the Santa Cruz Civic.

Conceptual designs for the Civic will be drafted based on past studies and priorities established by a working group of Civic staff and current users. ELS will also look at ways to dovetail required building maintenance with renovation efforts.

Designs will be completed in May of 2014 and will be the foundation for future work

with City leadership and the public to identify ways to support the development of this prized community resource.

The Civic Planning Leadership Team is co-chaired by Ellen Primack, Executive Director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and Dannettee Shoemaker, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Santa Cruz, which stewards the Civic.

he Capitola Begonia Festival Committee invites all local artists to submit a piece of art to serve as the official poster for the 62nd Annual Capitola Begonia Festival 2014.

According to Kim Hogan, a former selected artist, “This is an experience of a lifetime I would wish for all fellow artists in our community.”

This year’s theme is “Begonias on Broadway”. The artwork does not necessarily have to include the theme; selection does traditionally favor it. A list of all past themes and posters can be found on the website at www.begoniafestival.com.

The finished poster will measure 18” by 24” and both vertical and horizontal images will be considered. All mediums will be accepted. Graphics for the poster will be completed by the Begonia Festival Committee.

he 2014 Capitola Junior Lifeguard Program is gearing up for its 34th season.

Starting in mid-June, Capitola Beach will be alive with red bathing-suited kids, ages 6 and up, who will be actively learning about ocean water safety, first aid, lifesaving, fitness, beach games and good sportsmanship! Beyond all the fun, action and competition that take place every summer on the beach, the Capitola Junior Guards Parents’ Club & the Capitola Public Safety Foundation annually award college tuition scholarships to outstanding alumni of the program.

Get ready to sign up your kids for this year’s program! Junior Guard registration packets will be available starting March 13.

Registration for returning Guards and new Guards aged 12 and up begins March 17. Registration for the 6 and up group will begin in

early April (www.cityofcapitola.org/recreation/page/ summer-preview).

With the start of this first session, which runs from June 16-July 18 and the 2nd session from July 21-August 15th, Capitola residents, village neighbors, junior guards parents, and City and Recreation Department staff have been communicating and planning, with the goal of increasing the safety of the children and minimizing the traffic and congestion effects upon the village and adjacent neighborhoods.

Elise Legare, City of Capitola Recreation Supervisor and Jamie Goldstein, Capitola City Manager, have responded to concerns regarding the twice-daily gridlock that occurs when parents drive down into the village to drop off and pick up their kids.

Parents and all drivers will be informed about new parking and drop off alternatives, including the FREE option of parking on mid-week days at the new Lower Pacific Cove parking area, located behind City Hall.

Parents will be given passes for free parking during their children’s mid-week sessions. It is

hoped that this additional parking availability will lessen village congestion and lead to a safer environment throughout the busy summer village!

Parents are being encouraged, with this free, no time limit, parking availability, to park and walk their children down to the beach, rather than drive down to the beach or park in the neighborhoods surrounding the village.

Carpools and “walk pools” are also being strongly encouraged. Parents are also being informed that the Capitola Police Department will be enforcing existing traffic, speeding and parking regulations throughout the village and neighborhoods. If cars are parked in “permit only” zones, it is suggested that residents call the CPD Parking Enforcement Phone number, 471-1141.

All agree that the Junior Guards Summer program is a top recreational and educational program with a long history on Capitola Beach.

Staff members are well aware of the parking and congestion issues that come along with this busy time of year. They are hopeful that, by informing parents of this new alternate option

to driving down into the village, moving cars every 2 hours and parking in the neighborhoods, the resulting congestion will be greatly reduced. Parents are reminded to drive slowly, allow themselves enough time to deliver their kids safely and be considerate of the residents and neighborhoods surrounding the beach and village. City staff will be also looking into the possibility of running a shuttle from this new parking area down to the Esplanade and back for the 2015 Junior Guards program. n

California Highway Patrol Says ‘NO’ to Texting & Driving Part of the CHP’s strategic plan is to reduce distracted driving in an effort to save lives. To accomplish this goal the CHP is asking all drivers to put away cell phones and decide to improve their driving habits. In addition, the CHP is engaged in a yearlong, grant-funded Adult Distracted Driving traffic safety campaign. By the conclusion of the grant, September 30, 2014, a minimum of 60 distracted driving enforcement operations and at least 500 traffic safety presentations will have been completed statewide.

In 2012, CHP officers issued more than 168,000 citations for handheld cell phone or texting violations statewide. That is an average of 14,000 distracted driving citations a month.

“I want to encourage every motorist to abstain from texting while driving,” added Commissioner Farrow. “Together we can keep the roads safe and reduce the number of deaths, injuries, and collisions throughout California.” n

SACRAMENTO — Distracted driving is a dangerous epidemic on California’s roadways. In 2011 alone, more than 3,000 people were killed in distracted driving crashes. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is encouraging all motorists to make the conscience decision that could literally save their life: “Do not text and drive.”

Distracted driving is a serious safety concern for all drivers. Not only do they put themselves at risk, multi-tasking drivers increase the risk of injuring or killing their passengers, bicyclists, pedestrians, or innocent victims traveling in another vehicle.

“Driving is a complex task, requiring a motorist’s full attention. Anything that diverts the driver’s attention from the roadway, even for one or two seconds, could result in tragedy,” said Commissioner Joe Farrow. “The bottom line, whatever the distraction, `It’s Not Worth It!’ “

Through the tutoring components we are capable of creating individual assessments and developing the ability to record measurable gains in the following areas: vocabulary, speaking skills, letter sound connections, literacy and reading comprehension.

During the past two years, we have been analyzing our student results from the Imagine Learning software program. Our students are performing at a higher level proficiency rate for the entire grade level (TK and Kinder). They are gaining quickly the necessary phonemic awareness skills that are required as they become emerging readers. Having a software program where each child’s lessons can be tailor-made has proven to be significant support for our children who are at different readiness skills in the area of reading.

As we begin to plan for next year’s TK program, I would strong encourage all parents to visit our TK program at Opal Cliffs School. Transitional Kindergarten is a developmentally appropriate, activity based class that serves to build a foundation for early learners and prepare them for what lies ahead. Every activity is carefully chosen with great intention to improve the students’ abilities.

No matter how much it looks like “only play,” it is actually a motor skill, academic concept, or interpersonal skill.

The simplest activity can be used to teach any number of skills. The systematic scaffolding of every subject is always planned with an eye towards what’s expected next year and a deep understanding of child development, allows every child to be confident in their abilities and be challenged. Our TK program provides the needed support as our children develop their skills at various levels. We want children to be highly successful at school and we want children to have a rich learning environment that

included the arts, music, physical education fun academia and a sense of community We are projecting that our TK program will grow again for the coming school year (2014-15). Children who turn 5 between 9/2/14 and 12/2/14 are eligible for the TK program. It is extremely important for all parents to register their child beginning March 3, 2014. All registration for the TK program will take place at Santa Cruz Gardens Elementary School. Our TK classes have a student to adult ratio of 12:1. We believe that we will increase our TK classes to three for the 2014-15 school year.

It is most important for children who are not ready for an academic kinder program attend our TK program.

Given that our TK program has been so successful, we will only register students who are residents of our district at the present time. We will establish a waiting list for any parents who are interested in attending our TK program next year who are non-residents. wo years ago, our Board of Trustees approved a district wide goal to have all English speaking children on grade level by third grade. Even though obtaining this ambiguous goal would require a significant restructuring of our early literacy educational programs throughout the district, our staff fully endorsed this goal. As educators, we are well aware that children, who are not on their grade level by the end of third grade, will more than likely struggle with their education over the next nine (9) years. The creation of a dynamic early literacy program is the backbone of our strategy in creating a rich and nurturing educational environment where students can become fluent readers by third grade.

Happy Anniversary to Senior Network Services T his year marks the 40th anniversary of Senior Network Services. It was in August of 1974 that the doors were opened on the new senior community resource center for senior citizens who needed information and assistance.

This was made possible by a 1968 Federal Outreach Program established by President Johnson’s National Council on

Aging and funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity. Santa Cruz County was chosen as one of twelve regions because 19.1 % of our residents were age 65 or older and the national average was only 9%. Now, the office is also partially funded by public donations by businesses and individuals.

How would your pet tell you he has arthritis?

ats and dogs are very different from us when it comes to expressing pain. They do not complain about it as well as we do! My clients usually tell me; “My dog lost interest in play” Or “She takes much longer to stand up, particularly in the morning.” For cats, the symptoms can be even more subtle.

They may stop jumping to high places or may have difficulty performing the simple task of stepping inside the litter box.

These are all signs that your pet may be suffering from arthritis.

The good news is we now have a number of new and exciting treatments for this condition that every pet owner needs to know about.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis means inflammation inside joints. It can start at any age, but is more commonly seen in older pets. Untreated, it can lead to poor quality of life. The earlier it is recognized the easier it will be to slow down the progression and to provide your pet with more pain-free quality years.

What Can We Do? If you notice signs of arthritis, first have your pet examined by your veterinarian. An exam and x-rays are the best ways to diagnose arthritis. Many other musculoskeletal problems mimic arthritis so don’t skip step one before starting treatment.

Treatment Options Weight Management. Obesity exacerbates arthritis. Painful pets will exercise less and gain weight. Weigh your pet regularly to ensure pounds are not sneaking on.

Pets with arthritis require a modified exercise routine. For example, taking shorter but more frequent walks throughout the day (three 20 minute walks vs. a 1 hour hike).

Environmental Modification. Slippery floors, stairs, and high jumps into the car or off furniture can be disastrous. Use slip-proof rugs or carpet runners. A small set of stairs or ramp can help an older pet climb onto furniture or into a vehicle. For cats, switch to a litter box with a cutout entry.

Supplements, such as omega fatty acids are natural, safe and well tolerated by most animals. Choose a source from “whole fish” rather than cod liver. Brands with sustainable fishing methods (i.e. Nordic Natural or Wild Alaskan) will ensure grandchildren can give their pets fish oil.

When will our water agencies explain … (Fill in the blank)

see this from one source or another several times a week, but it is never sent directly to someone at the agency.

It is typically followed by an item such as “why has development been allowed to continue” or “why nothing has been done to address our situation.” It is almost never followed by “what we can do to help and where do we get more information.” Don’t get me wrong, we do have citizens offer to help on a regular basis, but they do so by contacting us.

The people who make exclamations of the former kind have clearly not taken the time to attend a meeting, place a phone call or even send an email to people who can actually answer their question.

Soquel Creek Water District is the second district I have had the privilege to manage. Like many who are trying to serve the public, it has always been my policy to have an open door. I welcome

surrounding this question. If it were a matter of just saying no more, it would make the District’s job much easier. But the reality is that we have no power to do anything other than deny a connection to potential customers. We have no power to prevent them from placing their own straw into the shared water supply. California is truly the Wild West of Water Law. Water rights — Municipal & Private e are in fitting company with Texas as the only two states in the union that do not regulate the use of groundwater through water rights. Overlying property owners have a right to pump reasonable amounts of water from under their property for a beneficial use without regulation or permits. Municipal users (water agencies) are considered “appropriators.”

This means that use of the water does not depend on ownership of land. Municipal users have a right to pump water when the basin has surplus water but their rights are typical junior to those of private property owners in the basin, including agricultural users. Clearly, this paints urban communities into a corner when their sole source of supply is an over-drafted groundwater basin. And of course, you can now see the conflict between the Districts ability to prevent connections and the property owner’s right to use the water underlying their property.

providing them every chance I get. So the next time you’re reading something and see someone question, “Why hasn’t the water agency (fill in blank here),” please contact me or any District staff and we’d be happy to share the information we have with you. No guessing necessary. And when you read those words in emails or blogs about us or any other government entity, ask yourself if you believe the author actually made any attempt to request an answer or if they are just enjoying a soapbox.

Are You Prepared for the Unexpected?

“Water Wisdom” from page 22 Regulation of Groundwater o what CAN we do? The water agency can declare a moratorium on new connections. If they are a Special District like Soquel Creek, that only means they can refuse new connections to their system.

And this can only be done temporarily while additional supply is sought and brought online. But the water agency has no power to control the permitting of new wells. In our case, only the county can do that. But with the explanation above you can see that all local governments are highly constrained in how they can regulate groundwater. While the county can declare a temporary moratorium on new well permits, this can clearly be challenged by property owners on the basis of California’s water laws. The result is often adjudication of the groundwater basin. This is a long, expensive legal process in which the courts decide how much water can safely be drawn, and who will be allowed to draw it. In the end, aren’t we better off putting our resources to more immediate solutions to over-drafted basins?

The group of nine architects includes Julia Morgan, Norma Merrick Sklarek, the first black woman made a fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and Marilyn Jordan Taylor, dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design.

The seven engineers discussed range from Emily Warren Roebling, who assumed her husband’s duties when he became ill and saw the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge project, to Ruth Gordon Schnapp, the first woman licensed struc-

By Duncan Wall Vintage. $16.95 (Rating: Excellent) f you are in the mood for a good circus book, you’ll find Duncan Wall’s charming firsthand account of his plunge into the world of the modern circus very entertaining. Along the way the author not only offers a nostalgic look back to the old days when attending a circus was more of a family ritual, but he also offers a look into the present Cirque du Soleil-fueled phenomenon.

After visiting his first nouveau cirque as a college student in Paris, the Wisconsin native was hooked. His obsession resulted in signing up for the competitive training program at France’s Ecole Nationale des Arts di Cirque.

What happens next when this young American becomes engaged in a demanding regimen of tumbling, trapeze, juggling and clowning is quite a remarkable story.

There are plenty of thrills and spills, outsized personalities and even a few surprises in this personal history of circus life and how this entertainment institution has evolved over the years.

The book also features eight pages of color photos that picture this change over the years. The only downside to this excellent book is the rather small print the

publisher elected to use. It will be a little hard on aged eyes so that will slow what would have been a fast read down a bit.

No matter, though. This will just prolong the enjoyment of what will be a very pleasurable read.

By Michael Singer Disney Editions. $60 (Rating: Excellent) ince he released his first film in the early 1970s Jerry Bruckheimer has influenced film making in innumerable ways.

His blockbusters range from “Flashdance,” “Glory Road” and “Top Gun” to “Pearl Harbor” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series.

Bruckheimer has also been the driving force behind a number of Hollywood notables like Johnny Depp, Nicholas Cage, Eddie Murphy and Denzel Washington. He has also nurtured an equally impressive group of seasoned directors including Paul Schrader, Michael Mann and Tony Scott.

This over-sized pictorial is filled with page upon page of photos of this producer’s work. Along with a short narrative, it chronicles a body of work that is as remarkable as it is groundbreaking.

These breathtaking color photos tell the story of a very special career and, as you’ll see, there’s a lot to say, hence the length of the book.

Granted this book is a bit pricy, but after paging through it, you’ll agree it is worth every penny. n

ven with her leg in a cast, this one-year-old Maltese/Terrier is as sweet as Candy and that’s how she earned her name. Candy came to the shelter as a stray with a limp, which was the result of multiple fractures to her leg. Although her leg is still healing, it’s time for Candy to find her way into a new home.

Candy is an adorable little girl who immediately wags her whole body to show her utter delight in all she sees. The sight of someone who may have come to give her love, starts her fluffy little motor and she is not afraid to come over for attention. She loves to be held, touched, rubbed, petted and talked to.

Candy is friendly and playful and would do fine in a home with others dogs or as an only pet. She loves people of all ages and would fit right in to a home with children however, please no toddlers. Candy is still young and acts very puppy-like.

In a shelter environment and with her injury, Candy is being kept on crate rest with frequent potty trips. Candy has been very patient and while she very much enjoys her outdoor time, she takes her crate time in stride and chooses to nap or lay quietly in watch of all the things going on around her.

In a home, she won’t have to be on crate rest but will need her activity monitored to ensure proper healing. It is important to know that Candy will need one or more future x-rays to make sure things are mending and all further medical care will be the adopter’s responsibility. Her vet seems to think her prognosis of making a full recovery is good, however there is a chance she may have a little hitch in her step for life.

Candy is about 12 pounds and seems to have more of the Maltese like hair, which is soft, fluffy and usually non-shedding. This type of coat does require frequent brushing and trips to the groomer. Because she is a mix, there is no guarantee she won’t shed. Don’t forget to really be honest with yourself about how much power you have, Gemini. A new perspective on an old issue transforms that issue for you this month. Communicate, communicate and then talk it over some more. You are called upon to bring more imagination and creativity to your work or business. Mid-month can bring a sudden awareness of overload in your daily life, and adjustments need to be made. You could also be feeling less energetic or physically up to par around this time. Finances can improve, and for some, a loan could come through, or you could receive a bonus this month.

Cancer (June 22-July 22)

You start the month out super in tune with the folks around you on the 1st and 2nd. In fact, it’s everything: From the wind in your hair to the singing birds to the traffic lights, you’re just plain in sync with everything! Terrific. If you have had a crush on someone for a long time now, it’s highly likely that they’ll call you on the 10th or 11th and ask you out on a really awesome date. Why? Because you are irresistible! It could briefly be crazy times at work, but nothing you haven’t seen before. Decide how hard you’re willing to work.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 23)

Your emotions are on your sleeve right now, and your ruler’s square to Saturn can point to a feeling of lack of support, particularly from family members. Where are you headed? Where do you want to go? How much are you enjoying things now? You’re confident and radiant and warm and wonderful on the very positive 12th -14th. Enjoy these fabulous days, preferably with a special somebody! Don’t let other people’s problems sideswipe you this month. It might be tempting to overreact and chase after too many good times, but resist that, too.

Virgo (Aug. 24-Sep. 22)

There are days when you just get so much done! And then there are days like the 1st and 2nd, when you probably won’t accomplish a heck of a lot. But don’t worry: After all, the journey is the destination, and as long as you’re enjoying yourself, that’s all that really matters. Sometimes what looks like a setback turns out to be the very best thing that ever happened to you. So roll with whatever comes your way! Cut yourself some slack. Enjoy some healthy recreation and break away from the routine.

Libra (Sep. 23-Oct. 23)

The more active you can get (think: Hiking, walking, swimming, basketball) with your friends on the 12th- 14th, the better you’re going to feel. And feeling great is going to be great preparation for the fabulous days coming your way. Energy levels are strong, but be careful not to take on too much. When Mars is retrograde in your sign, from March 1-May 19, you may be retracing some of the steps you’re taking now, or second-guessing your recent decisions. It’s always good to reexamine a relationship, but feelings now might just be hollow self-doubt. Relax.

Scorpio (Oct. 24-Nov. 22)

Enjoy the super spring-timey start to your month. By the challenging 5th and 6th, you’re going to need to be brave in order to overcome the obstacles that you want and need and are capable of overcoming. Being introspective will work to your advantage, especially this month, but you could feel bottled up. Without picking any fights, you can find ways to decompress and be good to your blood pressure. If things get tense at home, smile and remember that you’re the lucky one! March ends on a high note, with more time for recreation and increased faith in life in general.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23-Dec. 21)

Everybody has those days when the alarm goes off and you just want to keep lying in bed. If you have one on the 1st or 2nd, keep lying in bed, if you possibly can! If you must get up, then be gentle with yourself. Don’t work harder than you have to — if you can put something off until later and get some more rest now, do it (it’s important). You are likely to come up with more ideas and plans than you can count. However, you should definitely watch for committing to more of these than you can reasonably manage.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)

You feel so darn creative, it’s amazing. Now, your job is to channel this amazing energy into some super productive projects. Harness your imagination, and there’s no telling where it might take you! Your ambition is stimulated, but it’s important not to take on more than you can reasonably handle, as there can be changes of heart during Mars’ retrograde from March 1-May 19, when you can strongly regret having too much on your plate. There’s a degree of altruism as well as sheer professionalism at play here. Don’t hesitate to describe your aspirations.

Aquarius (Jan 21-Feb. 18)

Ah, reevaluation. Sure, it can sound intimidating. But it can also be a total relief to reevaluate and realize that what you thought you had to have to be a complete human being isn’t so important, after all. So, even if a project scares you a little on the 1st or 2nd, reevaluate. Go for it! As the month opens, your sense of fun could encourage extravagance or some needless risk with money. By the 4 this danger should be over, but the memories of foolishness may linger. And some amazing news on the 26th and 27th wakes you up from your sleepy springtime slumber.

Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)

Your month gets off to an utterly amazing start on the 1st and 2nd. You’ve been working hard lately: Getting in touch with your feelings, communing with your deepest wishes, understanding your creative impulses, letting yourself love and really feel alive. Now, you’re in a perfectly receptive space as a series of life’s gifts, big and small, flow your way. The world needs you too much. If your free spirit or reckless desires get you into hot water on the 18th, just remember just how darn charming and sincere you can be.

ime for a hearing test. No, not the kind that someone else wants you to get because they think you need hearing aids; this is a more of a “listening” test that can help you be more effective, more confident. This test is not age-related; it’s performance-related.

“It’s not what you say, it’s what people hear.” – Dr. Frank Lutz, author of “Words that Work” This listening test is intended to tune your awareness into the “whole” message, both what’s said and what’s unsaid. Yes, you heard me, the unsaid.

The unsaid, which includes tone of voice and body language, is the part of the message that isn’t said out loud, but is definitely communicated.

Test #1: What do you hear when you read the following statements I’ve heard from different people?

• “Life isn’t fair.”

• “I’m not perfect; I’m only human.”

• “Big organizations are inherently flawed because they are inhabited by human beings.”

What is the whole message being sent by the speaker? What’s the frame of mind of the speaker? What frame of mind do these comments put you into?

“It’s not what you say out of your mouth that determines your life; it’s what you whisper to yourself that has the most power!”

• “I love conflict!”

• “I don’t get involved in people’s emotional issues.”

• “I don’t like conflict.”

NOTE: To be clear, I do not think anything is inherently good or bad with any of the statements in Test 1 or 2. What I want to shed some light on is how we need to pay attention

to the whole message because it impacts the quality of relationships and what we can accomplish.

Test #1 Assessment What’s said – What’s heard Life isn’t fair. – Some cosmic power arbitrarily distributes rewards and punishments.

I’m not perfect; I’m only human. – A statement offered as a reason why something did or did not happen.

Big organizations are inherently flawed because they are inhabited by human beings. – A statement offered by Governor Chris Christie explaining why the shut down of lanes on the George Washington Bridge happened.

Can you hear the whole message, especially what’s unsaid? I hear: I’m not responsible. Whatever happens to you or me, well, just happens – our destiny is out of our hands. A commitment to shirk responsibility, not leadership.

What do you hear? I hear a lack of respect for other styles of processing information and making decisions and the development of strained, watch-your-back relationships. I hear the dismissal of emotions as irrelevant and that soft stuff gets in the way.

Why does “listening” awareness matter?

“No one will listen to us until we listen to ourselves.” — Marianne Williamson I’m guessing you already know.

If we are not aware of how what we say may land and be heard and understood, we are less effective and less connected to others.

Even a 5-year old has experienced the power of words and tone of voice and felt support or suppression. You know there have been times, perhaps too many, when you hoped people heard what you really meant, not what you actually said.

Here’s my point: The more we come believe we are responsible for what we say and aware of how it might be heard, the more we can say what we mean, the more we can build relationships of openness and trust which produce excellent results.

Want to improve your listening?

Here are three actions to take: 1. Recognize your biases. They are only damaging when you don’t know you have them.

2. Know your communication preferences and learn to manage them.

3. Seek feedback. Ask people what they hear you say and don’t argue with them. Knowing how you appear to others is the key to influence and leadership.

If you hear yourself more accurately, you’ll hear others more clearly, too, and you will deliver results that the non-listening crowd can’t.
