Mobile Home Park to be Parceled Out

The saga of the Surf and Sand Mobile Home Park took a new turn earlier this month when the City Council approved that it be divided up into parcels for sale.

The Surf and Sand is a 73-space park on 4.35 acres in the Jewel Box Hill neighborhood. At the owner’s request, and with the overwhelming approval of park residents, the park will be divided into 73 individually owned parcels with four common lots, which include three roads and the clubhouse.

Capitola Art & Wine Festival Celebrates 31 Years T hirty-One years of fine wine, gourmet food, exquisite fine art and entertainment is what the Capitola Art & Wine Festival is all about. Local Artists Carrie Jacobson-May, Barbara Reding and Eric Johnson wanted to celebrate and showcase art in Capitola. The first Art Festival was in held in 1982 on the Esplanade.

It was such a success that the following year more artists were added in addition to a few wineries so that people could enjoy strolling the Esplanade with a glass of wine to sip while viewing art. The Capitola Art & Wine Festival was then created.

Over the years, the Festival grew, adding more wineries, artists, food vendors and entertainment. The Festival embraces the entire Capitola Village encompassing the Esplanade, Capitola, Monterey, and San

FREE TRUCK RENTAL First Month with move in Caltrans Awards Transportation Planning Grant to SCCRTC SAN LUIS OBISPO — Caltrans has awarded a $250,000 transportation planning grant to the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (SCCRTC) for a Passenger Rail Study.

Five grants were awarded to agencies within Caltrans District 5 focused on improving mobility by identifying potential improvements in the transportation system.

••• Caltrans to Close San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Throughout Labor Day Weekend San Francisco — Caltrans is urging travelers who will be making a trip to the San Francisco Bay Area during Labor Day weekend to plan ahead, choose an alternate route now, and allow plenty of extra travel time because the San FranciscoOakland Bay Bridge will be closed.

The bridge will be shut down from 8 p.m., August 28, until 5 a.m., September 3, while workers take the bridge’s original East Span out of service and open the new bridge to traffic. Anyone interested in more details about the closure should visit http://baybridgeinfo.org/, or call 511 for

Nearly 300,000 motorists daily cross the iconic bridge that connects San Francisco with Oakland, Berkeley, and other East Bay cities.

Thanks to the public heeding previous warnings, Caltrans successfully closed the bridge without significant traffic backups during Labor Day weekends in 2006, 2007, and 2009. Taking advantage of historically light traffic on the bridge during the holiday weekend helps minimize disruptions to motorists, residents, and businesses.

Sixty-One Years of The Begonia Festival

By Carolyn Swift – Director, Capitola Historical Museum How We Got Here s autumn approaches the California coast, summer fog begins to drift offshore. Skies are clear, days warm, and evenings balmy.

A

This is the Golden State at its best.

Nowhere is a late summer sky brighter and in a more festive mood than in Capitola, a city with so much “flower power” that it was once known as the Begonia Capital of the World.

The flower industry took root shortly after 1900, when a diversity of bulbs and flowers had been introduced here.

The vibrant Begonia, however, was easily the most celebrated.

Primary grower James Brown was by 1919 a renowned producer, supplying flower seed as well as Begonias, Freesias and Gloxinias, which he imported from Europe. Brown traveled through Europe in 1920, returning with a

Section of Hwy 1 Dedicated to CHP Officer

By Jon Chown APTOS — By all accounts, Albert Hoover, for whom a section of Highway 1 was recently named, cut a dashing figure as a California Highway Patrol officer riding a motorcycle around Santa Cruz County in the 1930s. Stories abounded about the man, known for being helpful, but also for being a stickler when it came to the law.

“He pulled over my cousin and was writing him a ticket Albert Hoover when he broke his pencil,” said longtime resident Marvin Del Chiaro. “My cousin took out his pocket knife and shaved his pencil for him, and he still finished writing him a ticket. My cousin loved to tell that story.”

But at a dedication ceremony Wednesday, the officer’s granddaughter Donna Edwards let out a little secret; there was one person who escaped with a warning.

“He pulled over Grandma Mary,” Edwards said. “And he gave her a warning on the preface that she would go out on a date with him. I always got tickled at that story.”

But Hoover’s story seemed to have come to an end on Aug. 30, 1934. While heading north towards home on the Santa Cruz-Watsonville Highway, he collided with a truck that had turned into his path and he suffered fatal injuries. But after a lot of effort from the family and help from the CHP, Highway 1 between Branciforte Drive and Park Avenue, was dedicated

as the CHP Officer A. Donald Hoover Memorial Freeway.

Donald’s son Richard, who was just 5 when his father died, had led the effort, but brain cancer took his life in May 2012 at age 84. He had received a plaque of what the sign would look like shortly before his death and chose to have it buried with him.

Richard’s wife Jean Hoover helped unveil the one of the signs that would be placed on the highway Wednesday and said she was overwhelmed by the experience.

“It’s a wonderful day for all the family,” she said. “It’s been a long process, now we start a new era of remembrance.”

Caltrans approved two signs: one on northbound Highway 1, just south of Park Avenue, the other near La Fonda Avenue on southbound Highway 1. Hoover, said CHP area commander Paul Vincent, is one of three local CHP officers that have died on duty in Santa Cruz County and one of more than 200 that have died in the state. Lt. Michael Walker, hit by a vehicle on Highway 17 in 2005, and officer John Pedro, who was killed in a solo crash on the Green Valley Road exit near Watsonville in 2002, are the other two.

“In his sacrifice, a family lost its husband, father and son, the CHP lost a dedicated officer and the people of California lost a hero,” Vincent said of Hoover.

This event has grown over the years, and the food offerings have also grown with even a vegetarian booth for their loyal fan base.

According to the Festivals spokesperson, Athena Wolfe, “Since Day 1 the key people involved in the Festival’s kitchen have been Anastasia Karastamatis, Jimmy Petroutsas, and Fotini Ballas. Anastasia runs the kitchen and most of the recipes are in her head. She directs a group of up to 12 volunteers providing all of the wonderful Greek food. Anastasia is also called by her title Presbytera as she is the widow of the Priest, John Karastamatis, who established Prophet Elias Church. Barbara Melendez who is in charge of procurement assists Anastasia.

“Fotini Ballas possesses the “tribal knowledge” of Greek cooking and is known for being extremely picky on how things are done. She is often kidded for taking apart other peoples dolmas, and reshaping them so they are perfect. She runs the Loukoumathes booth at the event. (these are fried dough balls dipped in honey syrup, cinnamon and walnuts).

“Jimmy Petroutsas is there preparing meat for souvlaki, and making his own special recipe of rice pudding. We sell the rice pudding at the Festival and it often sells out, though I can’t tell you what his secret ingredients are as he wont’ tell anyone.”

Capitola Begonia Festival was organized with an official title two years later in 1954. Over coffee, Helen Antonelli and Vivian Benias designed a pageant to showcase the Begonia blossom by itself. In that 1954 festival six floats used 35,000 blossoms picked local fields.

As the summer of 2013 draws to a close, another weekend will add to 61 years of memories.Aware of the floral backdrop around them, few Capitola residents were surprised by the appearance of a Begonia festival. y love of painting began five years ago when I enrolled in a night class through Capitola adult education. I had no idea how it would change my life. Blessed with an amazing teacher, I began painting in watercolor, moving onto oil the following year. I have been experimenting with subjects since the beginning and haven’t settled in my sweet spot yet.

“I love painting portraits, children especially, however intricate flowers and large landscapes are also a joy. I went through a period of painting scenes from photos of Capitola in the 1920’s. Currently I am experimenting with Kim Hogan nature – clouds, water, and Rocky Mountains in particular. It doesn’t matter what I paint, I simply love the pure joy and peace of it.

“To this day, I stand back gazing at something I have painted, filled with emotion that I created it. I have developed a completely new appreciation of art in general and my perspective of people and nature has taken on a whole new meaning since I

began painting. I will be forever grateful for the nudge in life that led me to take a night class.”

Kim Hogan has lived in Capitola for nearly 10 years. She has two grown children, Amanda and Hunter, and shares her life with her best friend and partner, Michael Termini. They enjoy cooking, politics, neighbors, a wealth of friends, and cross-country motorcycle rides every summer; Kim rides her own Harley.

Kim says, “Riding cross country has taken on a completely new meaning since I began painting. I will often focus on a scene during the ride and, while enjoying the beauty and majesty of scenes like the Grand Canyon, Lake Louise in Canada, the battlefields of Gettysburg, or just a tree, I’ll deconstruct the scene in my mind so I can paint it.

Japanese-American Citizens League Celebrates Redress Victory 25th Anniversary

n Saturday, August 10, the ladies at the welcoming table at the Kizuka Hall in Watsonville handed us nametags that looked vaguely familiar. On the one side was a place for name, family number, and the words “You are instructed to report ready to travel on” with a blank line underneath. Printed on the back were the names of the ten concentration camps to which the 120,000 West Coast Japanese and Japanese-Americans had to be relocated after Executive Order 9066 was signed on February 17, 1942. A string attached at one end of the tag would go through a coat buttonhole, sort of like a luggage tag.

It was standing room only in the hall listening to Japanese-American Citizens League Board Member Mas Hashimoto ask, “How can a nation suspend the Constitution?” The answer: “Racism.” He showed us a 30-minute film called “Days of Waiting,” the story of a Caucasian

When Arthur was ordered to report to Pomona Assembly Center, Estelle chose to go with her husband to a “relocation” camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. Her documentation in drawings and paintings of life there gave a moving portrait of the lives of the internees. The film won the Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject in 1990.

The camps were disbanded after the war ended and the internees were released in late 1945 and early 1946. They went back to their West Coast “homes” in towns such as Watsonville and other cities.

Some families were lucky: the American friends and neighbors they had entrusted their property to returned it to them. Some Americans even farmed their JapaneseAmerican friends’ farms for them until they were released.

Mobile Home Park to be Parceled Out

City Council approves plan to divide Surf and Sand into privately-owned lots

he saga of the Surf and Sand Mobile Home Park took a new turn earlier this month when the City Council approved that it be divided up into parcels for sale.

The Surf and Sand is a 73-space park

on 4.35 acres in the Jewel Box Hill neighborhood. At the owner’s request, and with the overwhelming approval of park residents, the park will be divided into 73 individually owned parcels with four common lots, which include three roads

and the clubhouse. No permanent structures can be built on the small lots, which range from 1,528 to 2,954 square feet.

The council approved the change on Aug. 8 by a 4-1 vote with Mayor Stephanie Harlan in dissent. Harlan was a member of the City Council in 2011 when the city effectively ended its ordinance on mobile home rent control after the owners of the Surf and Sand sued.

The city had spent more than $1 million defending the rent control ordinance against other complainants, but Surf and Sand owner Ron Reed was seeking $27 million in damages and appeared to have a reasonable chance of winning his case as is mobile home park was annexed by the city after the ordinance was in place.

Fall Sports Teams Feature Many New Starting Players

T

urnover is a word that has multiple meanings in the world of sports.

On the field, it describes one team losing control or the other team gaining control of the game.

Off the field, turnover represents the older players leaving, younger players moving up in the ranks and new players joining the team. It also represents coaches leaving and a new coach coming in.

Turnover is all about change, and the fall sports teams at Harbor High School and Soquel High School are seeing a lot of that this year.

“Many of our teams are young, and we have young coaches as well,” Harbor Athletic Director Steve Kopald said. “With most of our coaches

having off-campus jobs, I’m hiring new ones every year.

They are all strong and enthusiastic in their sports and I’m looking forward to this season.”

Both schools have a new Varsity coach or two, but much of the turnover is in the players.

Take Soquel’s football team: The No. 2 team in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League in 2012 has only two returning starters in 2013 and is starting five sophomores in the upcoming Jamboree.

Warriors superstar in Monterey Bay for basketball camp

By Jon Chown PEBBLE BEACH — When NBA Golden State Warriors Guard Stephen Curry talks, people listen — especially if they are one of more than 100 campers who took part in the Stephen Curry Overnight Youth Basketball Camp at Stevenson School from Aug. 17-20.

Scotts Valley High School sophomore Tim Wagner was one of them. He was at the camp Tuesday morning. He met Curry, heard him speak, watched him demonstrate his personal workout routine and worked out with the many coaches at the camp.

“I’m learning new stuff every day, having fun,” Wagner said. “I’m learning new moves and about getting my team chemistry better.”

Besides just seeing his routine and getting his autograph, Wagner said he got some face-to-face time as well.

“I went over and said a few words with him while he was taking a break from the staff game. It was amazing to meet him,” Wagner said of his favorite NBA player.

“For sure I’m a Warriors fan. Steph Curry is my favorite player,” he said.

In an interview with the press, Curry admitted that most of the kids are just star struck when they see him, but as they realize you are just a person, they break out of their shell.

“Anything they want to ask, when I’m here, I’m available. And they embrace that,” Curry said.

Curry said he emphasized to the campers that hard word and effort are what separate superstars like himself.

While natural skill varies from person to person, effort can make up for it.

The Dawning of the Age of Aquarius in Capitola

fifties — a quiet small town with all of the usual services — a pharmacy, two markets, a bakery, a post office, and a five and dime.

In the summer, families from the hot California interior arrived to spend a week or two cooling off in the fog and the cold waters of the bay. There were only a few gift shops, no art galleries, only two restaurants and two bars. There was still the merry-goround, the bowling alley, Skee Ball parlors and the Bandstand where you could buy beach pails and shovels, cotton candy, snow cones, hamburgers and hot dogs.

In 1964, Capitola lost its beach due to the building of the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor. The breakwater at the new harbor blocked the sand that previously drifted down the coast to replenish the Capitola and New Brighton beaches. Change rippled through the area.

Our little group of summer friends were all teenagers now, and instead of spending the day on the Capitola beach with our parents, we would drive over to the Cove in Live Oak (17th Avenue and East Cliff Drive) where we would work on our tans and body surf in the waves. There was a Foster’s Freeze (or something like that) on the corner of East Cliff Drive and 17th. n 1960, my parents bought a little cabin on the Soquel Creek, and my mother and we kids would come and spend the summer there. My Dad would come on the weekends from Sacramento. Dad bought the 600 square feet cabin for $28,000, which was a lot in those days. The story goes that Dad came down to Capitola that summer with a $1000 in cash in his pocket. He found a large house near the Wharf with a great ocean view. He offered the owner the $1000 as a down payment, but was refused. The owner said he wanted $2000. Dad stubbornly walked away and bought a cabin on the creek whose owner did accept the $1000 as a down payment. So the six of us crowded into the little two bedroom, one bathhouse.

Capitola Village was pretty much the same in the early sixties as it was in the

After dinner with our parents, we’d often head back to the Cove’s adjacent beach (20th Avenue) for a bonfire enlivened by a jug of Red Mountain. One evening we were partying there when spotlights of several police cars cast bright lights on us.

A policeman yelled down – “Stay there or we’ll shoot!” Most of the group obediently waited to be taken in the paddy wagon to artisan shops and a few shops of sixties jail where parents were called. Soquel School District’s Exciting News for the 2013-14 School Year ‌ O ur planning for the 2013-14 school year is electrifying! We have hired two outstanding individuals for the position of principal. The hiring of a school principal is one of the most important jobs of the Superintendent. Ms. Gerri Fippin will be the principal at Soquel Elementary School and Ms. Kerry le Roux will be the principal at Santa Cruz Gardens Elementary School.

Both of these individuals have extensive educational backgrounds and their leadership styles will embrace our commitment to create educational excellence for every child throughout our district. I have been very impressed with the extensive training that both Gerri and Kerry have received from their former employers. Their knowledge of

our new state Common Core standards will benefit our district immediately.

In addition to the hiring of two new principals, we have also been hiring teachers to meet our projected student growth. We are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to add recent graduates to our educational program. The energy and excitement of our new hires is contagious.

Being a district that carries an excellent reputation has enabled us to hire some of the best and brightest teachers.

In our efforts to create a dynamic early literacy program, we have invested tens of thousands of dollars to provide each Transitional Kindergarten student and each Kindergarten student with their own

student licenses for Imagine Learning. The Imagine Learning Early Literacy Program is just outstanding! For the first time all children in Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten will receive daily instruction in the area of early literacy through this software program. We will equip every Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten class with a new computer workstation.

By committing to Imagine Learning, we expect all of our Kindergarten students to be highly prepared for first grade. In addition, the Imagine Learning software program will allow parents to observe and monitor their child’s progress. A special feature of Imagine Learning will enable parents to work side by side with their child during homework sessions. We now have the ability to expand beyond the school day by utilizing the web-based component of Imagine Learning.

The interactive software is so engaging for students that often students are disappointed when they have to log out of the program.

Another exciting program that will be implemented in our district this year is AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). The AVID program will be implemented at New Brighton Middle School. The focus of AVID is to identify talented students through mentoring and guidance in anticipation that they will be the first generation to attend college.

The AVID program has been around for thirty years and today over 750,000 students throughout the United States and worldwide participates in AVID instruction each year.

Our dynamic AVID team at New Brighton Middle School received three intensive days of training this summer to prepare for the launching of this program. The 7th grade students who are participating in the AVID program have made a two-year commitment for AVID instruction. Our children are very

fortunate to have self-motivated teacher teams who are willing to bring and support new programs at their schools. The longterm goal is to implement AVID instructional strategies for all students.

This summer we provided special training opportunities for teachers at Soquel Elementary School. Nearly half of their staff had the chance to either go to New York City (Columbia University) or Redondo Beach for specialized training in the area of reading or writing. I truly commend our outstanding teachers who were willing to take it upon themselves to attend workshops that would improve their teaching skills.

A major focus in the district is Reader’s/ Writer’s Workshop. We are planning to expand upon the Writer’s workshop component that will improve the writing capabilities of our students. Through the support of the Cotsen Foundation, we will increase our staff development training and provide opportunities for staff to visit other school sites where outstanding writing and reading programs exist.

It is without question that the 2013-14 school year is going to be filled with new programs, great energy and excitement. I strongly encourage parents to get highly involved in their child’s education. Our community is rich in resources and your direct support at your child’s school will make all the difference in the world. Please continue to stay involved and actively recruit additional parents to volunteer in the classroom. I look forward to seeing all of you in the near future. n

Getting to the Root of Pet Dental Care W hen contemplating the necessity of home dental care for pets, it is often helpful to put ourselves in their paws for a moment and ask, “How would we feel if we didn’t brush our teeth for a month?” Have you

ever missed a day or two and felt that icky film on your teeth? Not to mention the halitosis ... yuck! Well animals feel the same way. They may not ask for their teeth to be brushed, and it may not sound easy, but it can be one of the most valuable tools to improve your pet’s health. Many people have misconceptions about pet dental care.

Misconception #1: Fluffy’s appetite is great and her teeth look ok, so I don’t need to brush her teeth.

Unlike humans, animals instinctively hide their weakness and signs of illness. This is a useful survival strategy for wild animals but, as a result, we often miss the subtle clues that our companion animals are sick or in pain.

Obviously, not eating is not a good survival strategy!

This would only be a sign observed with very severe dental disease. It is a good idea to visually inspect your pets mouth on a regular basis. However, we can’t rely on our eyes completely since dental disease

Misconception #2: Marley hates it when I try to brush his teeth.

Let’s face it: brushing teeth is not a fun task, but it is a necessity in life. As with all grooming tasks, most animals will need to get used to having their teeth brushed. It may take several months of baby steps to make progress but many pets will actually learn to accept and look forward to having their teeth brushed.

Patience is key!

Praise and rewards in the form of dental treats and flavored pet toothpaste will ensure the process gets easier with time.

It’s never too late to start! However, it is important to check with your veterinarian first. A professional oral health assessment, cleaning, and possible extractions of bad teeth may be necessary before starting a home care regimen to ensure it is a pain-free process.

Misconception #3: Princess gets her teeth brushed and cleaned by her groomer every month so I don’t need to do anything else for her teeth.

Brushing once a month or once every 6 weeks at a grooming appointment cannot replace regular daily brushing. Pets have very similar oral anatomy and physiology

as people and, just like us, they should have their teeth brushed every day.

Misconception #4: Anesthesia for a professional dental cleaning is scary and risky, especially since Rover is getting older.

When done properly by your veterinarian and trained veterinary technicians, there is very low risk for anesthetic complications during a routine dental procedure.

A discussion with your veterinarian prior to any anesthetic procedure is necessary to understand the process and proper precautions to ensure safety.

Performing a thorough pre-anesthetic exam and blood test is always recommended to identify any unusual risks prior to the procedure. The low risk of anesthesia must be considered in the face of the certain risk of untreated dental disease which will always progress over time and decrease your pets quality of life.

Misconception #5: I can get Bobo’s teeth cleaned without anesthesia--it’s safer and cheaper!

If the thought of a root canal or just stepping foot into your dentist’s office gives you a rapid heartbeat, how do you think your pet would feel in similar circumstance without the benefit anesthesia?

Under the California School Immunization Law, children are required to receive certain immunizations in order to attend public, or private, elementary and secondary schools, as well as child care or developmental centers. There are also some vaccines required for students entering college.

• The deli difference: Not all lunchmeat is created equal. Look for natural and organic brands made with a short, “clean” list of ingredients and no antibiotics or

artificial colors, flavors or additives.

slippery issue on their hands. According to city staff and attorney’s advising the council, the mobile home park, a privately owned piece of land, is really more

under the jurisdiction of the state and the Department of Real Estate.

“We grant them the ability to subdivide, but it’s still a mobile home park,”

said councilman Michael Termini. “You can’t build single-family housing or an apartment complex.”

Termini said the meeting was difficult because it revisited the pain of the rent control battle, but that the change would be a good thing. He said some residents had complained about the park not being kept up, and pointed out that the situation would likely improve now.

“The best way to clean that park up is have private owners own their individual parcels,” he said. “I guarantee the infrastructure will be stellar.”

The owner had planned infrastructure improvements with the change, and once implemented, Termini pointed out, owners of individual properties had more stake in seeing that the improvements were kept up, and more legal rights in insisting that they were made.

“It’s an interesting turn of events,” Termini said. n

The turning point came in the 1980’s when the JACL formed the Legislative Education Committee (LEC) and asked Grant Ujifusa, originally from Wyoming but by then an editor at Random House, to serve as strategy chairman.

Under his able leadership, his important connections and perseverance, the bill crept along slowly through Congress.

It was a stroke of genius to name the bill H.R.442 in honor of the all-Japanese 442nd Infantry Regiment that saved the “Lost Battalion” (Originally part of the Texas National Guard) in France when it was surrounded by Germans.

The 442nd Infantry Regiment is said to be the most-decorated infantry regiment in the history of the U.S. Army with eight Presidential Unit Citations and twenty-one of its members awarded the Medal of Honor in World War II. Two of the 442nd veterans were in the audience and were recognized with a hearty round of applause.

Mr. Ujifusa gave us a further overview of the painstaking process it took to get this done in Washington. He said that for a long time the only states’ representatives who supported the bill were those from Texas, who remembered the 442nd Infantry Regi-

ment’s heroic actions in WWII. Ultimately the Civil Liberties Act – sponsored by California’s Democratic Congressman Norman Mineta, an internee as a child, Wyoming’s Republican Senator Alan K. Simpson, who first met Mineta while visiting an internment camp, and California’s Republican Senator Pete Wilson – which included reparations of $20,000 redress for each internee still living, was signed by President Ronald Reagan on August 10, 1988.

While Mr. Ujifusa was assiduously working in Washington, Ben and Yoko Umeda of Watsonville led the local chapter’s redress and reparation campaign from 1980 to 1984 soliciting funds for the cause.

Their first letter requesting support drew very little response. They sent a second letter and persevered until they were able

to collect $58,834.50. The Umedas and Grant Ujifusa were honored for their outstanding efforts. Names of the local donors in the 1980-84 campaign were read aloud and donors or family members of donors were asked to stand to be acknowledged.

To end the remembrance ceremony, the youth in the audience were called upon to escort an internee, or the relative of an internee, to the table of photographs where the former internee placed a rose in front of the picture of the camp where they had been interned.

Those leases will remain in effect as each resident has the option to buy or continue renting.

Mayor Harlan suggested attaching the individual leases to the agreement to allow the subdivision, but city staff advised against it.

“This not some kind of backdoor way to get out of these leases,” said Robert DeWitt civil engineer. “I don’t know if you want to attach private leases to this public agreement. We are stating for the public record that those are binding leases and they will be honored as they have been honored.”

Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston’s 1973 autobiography, “Farewell to Manzanar” tells how, when returning to their hometown, they learned the warehouse where her family’s belongings were stored had been unaccountably “robbed” of furniture, appliances, and everything of value. Her father had owned several fishing boats — there was no record them. These too had unaccountably “disappeared,” leaving the family with no way to earn a living.

This was by no means a unique story; many others suffered in the same way.

Happy Anniversary Grey Bears!

Never Underestimate The Power Of a Group of Seniors Working Together

O

n September 24, the California Grey Bears of Santa Cruz will be celebrating their 40th anniversary at their annual Harvest Picnic with 1,500 seniors expected to attend.

The name implies that this organization is a branch of a statewide association. This is not the fact. As Executive Director Tim Brattan explained to me, this is an entirely Santa Cruz County operation and the plan is to change the name to simply “Grey Bears” to reflect the true nature of the local organization.

In 1973, a young woman named Kristina Mailliard and her friend Gary Denny shared fruits and vegetables from their garden with local seniors. When they discovered the needs of their older neighbors, they decided to hold a harvest festival for the senior community. This developed into a group of 100 members.

In a period of two years, the group came to be known as The Grey Bears and had 1,000 members, each one paying $1 a year. They were giving out about 600 bags of groceries each week. By 1984, the membership had grown to 2,000, making it necessary to move to Brown Bulb Ranch. In 1985 they were able to purchase a lot at 2710 Chanticleer Avenue, which is the current location of The Grey Bears.

By 1986 they had refurbished an old chicken coop on the property into the Brown Bag Program warehouse where the weekly food distribution operations continue to this day.

Michael Manfre was the Executive Director and Lynda Frances was the

Office Manager. She was soon promoted to Executive Director, a post she held until 2011.

Volunteers rolled newspapers for local florists and nurseries as a money raising activity and operation S.C.R.A.P. (Santa Cruz Recycling Alliance Program) was incorporated as a fund raiser and to help local businesses recycle their cardboard.

In 1992, Grey Bears purchased an adjacent lot and opened a full time Thrift Store. In 1996, the purchase of a third lot enabled them to separate the Brown Bag program from the Recycling Center. They also entered into a contract with Santa Cruz County to manage the Recycling Center at Buena Vista Landfill.

And, in 2000, through a joint collaboration with the County Board of Supervisors, they opened a full time public Recycling Center on their Chanticleer property.

What teaching taught me F rom 1970-80, I taught high school English in Columbus, Ohio. School was designed to move kids through the system and teachers were there to make that happen, and for students to gain knowledge and learn skills in the process. Both teachers and students did their best, given the system.

I loved both teaching and my students.

I taught because I wanted to contribute to their developing competencies that would serve them their whole lives. I didn’t know it then, but I was learning how to be a coach. Here’s some of what I learned: 1. Choice matters. My students “had to” attend (and pass) my class to graduate. I learned how to create an environment in my classroom that shifted the “had to” to “want to.” I made learning meaningful. I know this because students would request me as their teacher.

2. Relationships rule.

Our relationship began as me versus them. I was ‘the man’ (ok, the wo-man). I learned how to have students experience that I was on their side, committed to them being their unique, awesome selves, committed to them being successful people, not merely students.

3. Set the bar. Many dreaded English because they’d gotten poor marks before or were told they weren’t creative or they wouldn’t need it in their line of work. I learned that when I talked to them as if they were creative, that what they had to say was important, they rose to my expectation, then made it theirs.

4. C o m m i t m e n t trumps compliance. Students who attended only to avoid detention never excelled and never broke through to the joys of learning. Those who committed to reach beyond their past achievements or even their parent’s expectations excelled. They excelled at engaging, at thinking, at adapting. Interpreting poetry became more about the chal-

lenge and the opportunity to express their opinion and less about the grade.

5.

Be there when the going gets tough. Daily journaling, written self-expression, began most of my classes. There was no grade. It was an opportunity for them to say anything they wanted and to be present, in the moment. I read them all and returned them the next class day. It was a privilege. Often the pages revealed family dysfunctions, teen angst and self-doubt. I learned there’s a time to listen, without judgment, with compassion for their view of the world.

6. Personal responsibility empowers.

In my early months in front of the room, I was more interested in being liked than in being a disciplinarian. It felt like an either/or scenario. That didn’t work. I learned that it could be both/ and. When I stopped accepting excuses for missed assignments or poor work and enforced consequences from my commitment to their success, behavior shifted.

Excuses stopped as they learned to hold themselves accountable for their performance. I learned holding them to account was an expression of my love and respect for them.

Just last week, in a corporate development and coaching session at a rapidly growing company committed to being a global player in the food industry, my colleague remarked: “Don’t let school get in the way of your education.”

How does school get in the way of our education? Much of our formal schooling teaches us how to comply, to follow rules, to not question, to learn (read: memorize) only what we need to pass the test … and that the teacher has the answers, at least the only answers that matter. It doesn’t teach us how to think critically or express our own opinion without requiring a footnote from someone else to give our opinion credibility. (How’s that working for you, Mr/Ms. Adult?)

The word education comes from the root ‘ex,’ meaning ‘out,’ and ‘duco,’ meaning ‘I lead.’ To me, education is leading out what is already there. Leading out a person’s natural desire to understand the world around them, to understand themselves and others – that’s education.

Of course, there’s knowledge and skills to integrate along the way, but it’s the core that matters and that core is what matters to the person.

What I learned from my students 40 years ago, and continue to learn from my colleagues and clients over the past 30

years, is that in our partnership both of us are learning and both of us are developing. Coaching and being coached is the ultimate continue education class. Oliver and His Alligator

By Pail Schmid Hyperion/Disney. $15.99 (Ages: 3-5) liver is a little worried about his first day of school so he decides to stop by the swamp and pick up an alligator. Now, in case things “get rough” Oliver has a friend who can deal with the situation.

Right away things do get rough! A lady meets Oliver at the door of the school and asks his name. Poor Oliver suddenly cannot remember his name so he responds, “Munch, munch!” which is code for “Eat her!” and the alligator does!

As the day progresses every time the little boy is unable to respond to a question, he says, “Munch, munch!” Soon his alligator is very, very full and the schoolroom is very, very empty! Then Oliver hears noises coming from inside his alligator.

“What’s this?” There is laughing and talking. School has started without Oliver.

Now what is the little boy going to do?

“Munch, munch!” he said.

Young children will love this very silly story and if you have a youngster a little wary of his or her first day of school, share this book ahead of time. Once you’ve done that, send the child off with his favorite stuffed animal and the magic words – “Munch, munch!”

After a number of “creative” attempts to extricate Matty there’s an impressive, colorful “work of art” on the table and, unfortunately, Matty is at the center of it.

With his teacher frantically hyperventilating into a paper bag and the school nurse and principal at a loss of what to do, it is going to be up to Matty’s dad to figure out how to handle this sticky situation.

Zac Retz’s digital art brings this humorous story to life while Jason Lefebve’s zany text explains what’s happing.

Capitola settles new contract with police T

he city of Capitola has settled contract negotiations with the Capitola Police Officers Association, agreeing to a five-year contract that keeps police officers’ pay the same this year, but increases it up to 3.5 percent each year after.

The City Council hailed the new agreement during its Aug. 8 meeting. The council had reached the pact during closed session earlier in the evening. The new contract will keep police pay the same this year,

year contract that would bring peace and stability to the city’s budget and the families of the police officers.

Councilman Dennis Norton said he felt the contract was very fair to both sides and that Capitola Asst. City Manager Lisa Murphy deserved special kudos for her skill in negotiating the contract. Councilman Sam Storey thanked

the police officers for negotiating in good faith and in a professional manner.

“I think this is significant because with public safety being such a concern in this county, we in Capitola have the benefits of having a long-term labor agreement with the Police Officers Association and we can work hand-in-hand with them on public safety,” Storey said. “Nothing is more important to the quality of life in Capitola than the police department.” n

Grey Bears distributes 2.6 million pounds of food to seniors and to local charities that serve seniors every year through their Brown Bag Program. The recycling programs diverts 18,000 tons of waste from landfills every year. Volunteers are the heart and soul of Grey Bears – from gleaning, quality control and composting, assembling and delivering

weekly bags of groceries, to running the Thrift Store and Computer Electronics Store, staffing the office and helping with classes and events.

That’s not to say Myers isn’t excited about his team’s outlook.

“We had an outstanding senior crew in 2012,” he said. “But many of our returning players had lots of playing time and I know we’re going to be good.

But younger teams are more prone to mistakes, and Myers acknowledged that.

“We ‘clocked’ four teams last year,” Myers said, referring to a new rule from last year in which games featuring a 35-or-more point lead at the half played the second half without stopping the clock. “While this gave all our players opportunities to play in live games, it also reduced the time they had on the field.”

Myers expects junior Tylon Seeger to earn the task of replacing 2012’s leading rusher, Fabian Hale, whose 2,360 yards on the ground set the new standard in the SCCAL. “Seeger has been head and heels above the rest of the running backs in practice,” Myers said. “Nothing is set in stone, but I’m looking forward to seeing him on the field.

Myers only returning starters are John Wenger, playing both offensive tackle and defensive end, and Wenger’s defensive bookend Abel Lile, the two of which Myers calls “a very good combination.”

The Pirates also have a young football team, but unlike Soquel, Harbor has a core group of seniors who’ve been playing together since fourth-year head coach Jeff Cox took over.

“Our team’s skill positions are in pretty good shape,” Kopald said.

ogie, a beautiful Japanese Chin, is waiting for a palace to call his own! This gorgeous one year old came in to an overcrowded shelter as an owner surrender when his family moved overseas. Due to limited space, rescuers asked the Santa Cruz SPCA to come to his aid and within days he was on a transport to Santa Cruz with several other dogs.

Despite his confusion and stress at having lost his home, when he arrived staff and volunteers were impressed with his wonderful demeanor and even temperament. He has now settled in and spends his days wowing people with his regal good looks. From his silky coat to his velvet ears, this is a dog that you will want to stroke and pamper!

As a breed, Chins are the dogs of Japanese royalty and are known for being wonderful companions and lap dogs. The Chin is considered the most cat-like of dog breeds though they are also renowned for their ability to learn tricks and their love of entertaining people. They have a very soft low maintenance coat which requires little more than regular brushing. You will win if you adopt this Chin!

As a matter of fact, the use of any sharp dental instruments to scale teeth without the supervision of a veterinarian is illegal in the state of California. I have examined quite a few pets over the years after they have had non-anesthetic dental cleanings. Some of these poor pets had tooth root abscesses, cracked teeth and gum disease that required treatment for infection and extraction of damaged teeth.

Scraping the tartar off the visible surface of the tooth won’t address the real problems under the gum line and may actually leave a rough surface that plaque causing bacterial love to take advantage of. Anesthesia free dental cleanings are akin to washing your car when it needs an oil change. Most dental problems are impossible to identify without anesthesia...probing around the gum line and dental x-rays are critical for pets just as they are for people.

Misconception #6: I barely have the time and energy to brush my own teeth, let alone my cat’s teeth!

Home dental care has many different aspects. Nothing replaces tooth brushing…it is your best investment in preventative dental care. However, there is a fantastic array of new dental products that will help round out your pet’s home dental routine.
