annual Capitola Art & Wine festival A celebration of artistic expression and local winemaking describes the 32nd annual Capitola Art & Wine Festival to be held September 13 and 14 in beautiful Capitola Village By-the-Sea. The quaintness of the Village and the sound of the surf is the backdrop for this wonderful celebration. The Festival was created in 1982 by the late Carrie Jacobson May, Barbara Reding and Eric Johnson to showcase local artistic talent. Fifty artists participated on the Esplanade that first year in the “Capitola Village Art Festival”. The Capitola Chamber of Commerce became involved the following year in 1983. The late Jay Collins created the first poster, wine tasting was added and the name was changed to the “Capitola Art & Wine Festival.”

Artistic talent ranges from exquisite jewelry to metal sculpture for the home, intricate blown glass, handcrafted leather goods and woodwork, water color and oil paintings, photography, and everything in-between; even a local face-painter for the children (or the child within). And for the budding young artist, there is a children’s art area with ongoing projects to entertain the younger set.

Today the Festival is hosted by the CapitolaSoquel Chamber of Commerce and includes over 160 local and nationally acclaimed fine artists, wine tasting from 22 Santa Cruz Mountain wineries, local gourmet restaurants & caterers and fabulous entertainment all weekend including The Sun Kings - a Beatles tribute, fun-in-the-sun funk and California Rock from Extra Large, and the samba-reggae-funk-surfand-skate, capoeira-kicking, scene-busting

phenomenon known as SambaDรก, plus local dance groups and street performers. Local artist Lynn Jaye created the beautiful artwork for the 2014 Festival poster. The Capitola Art & Wine Festival is the biggest fundraising event of the year, not only for the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce (a non-profit organization), but also for the many local school groups and non-profit community
groups that assist with the Festival. While the event is admission free, wine enthusiasts may purchase a 2014 Festival glass and tasting tokens at one of the Glass & Token booths conveniently placed throughout the Festival. Parking is free and easy at the Capitola Mall on 41st Avenue and the Crossroads Center on Bay Avenue, where you can hop on a free shuttle that drops you directly at the Festival entrance.

Capitola Art & Wine festival artist
Lynn Jaye Lynn Jaye started painting at age five when her cousin showed her how to paint by numbers at her grandma’s house one weekend. She fell in love with the process and it became a lifelong passion. After attending three major art schools in London where she grew up, Jaye embarked upon a series of travels that took her around the world. She arrived in Santa Cruz in 1981 and the natural beauty of the coastline persuaded her to make it her home. Jaye went back to school, taking art and design classes at Cabrillo College and West Valley College. She worked in graphic and interior design and then became a full-time artist in 1990.
After a seven-year love affair with watercolor, Jaye went on to paint in acrylic and has recently returned to oil, the medium she first learned as a painter. She is always inspired by the beauty of nature and favorite motifs include landscapes and coastlines of California, Tuscany and Provence. She also loves to paint colorful wildflowers, poppies and sunflowers, sometimes expressing her ideas with mixed media. Her large triptychs and views through arched windows give the sensation of being present in the painting and her goal is to impart a feeling of joyfulness in her work.

While Brazilian natives Papiba Godinho and Dandha da Hora bring their profound knowledge and respect for the roots of afro-brazilian song and dance, the entire band has developed a type of samba-reggae-funk with a universal appeal. SambaDá musically unites the Americas, drawing from percussion based styles of South and Central America, and blends it with that good old funk and reggae back beat so familiar to crowds of North America. For over ten years, SambaDá has been mixing contemporary sounds with the roots of Brazilian culture. The other members of SambaDá come from a wide range of styles, generations and sensibilities. What unites this band from such diverse backgrounds is a magic that can be felt by both the band and the audience. SambaDá brings joy to each performance, and keeps their fans asking for more!

offers many flavors to be discovered The Capitola Art & Wine festival is the perfect venue and opportunity to taste the wide variety of wines produced by our local wineries. For those who take the time to savor them, describing the taste of these wines is a fascinating exercise in getting in touch with your sense of taste and smell. The basic flavors found in food are also discovered in wine. These are sweet, salty, tart, bitter or pungent. Most wine has a level of sweetness, while it’s never salty, but can be highly influenced by salty foods. Some wines are very acidic, which makes them tart, and some really get your attention with their bitterness. The alcohol in wine brings all these taste elements together to form the aromas and the unique flavors of wine. The sugar that is present in grapes is converted during fermentation by differing degrees. Sweet white wines are White Zinfandel or Merlot, many Rieslings, Chenin Blanc and Spumante. Sweet reds include Lambrusco and Port. Wines with very little sweetness are called “dry.”

If the dish to be eaten is acidic – citrus or vinegar flavors – then an acidic wine would be appropriate, or a lightly acidic dish can be balanced with a light sweet wine. Examples of acidic white wines are Sauvignon Blanc and most sparkling wines. Acidity in wine dilutes saltiness, so pairing salty foods with sparkling wines works better than the usual red wines. Tannins from the skins and stems of grapes and from oak barrels used for aging cause a bitter or astringent aftertaste in some younger red wines. As tannins mellow with age they are one of the factors that add complexity to a mature wine. Paired with foods that have a salty, tart or bitter taste makes a wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Syrah seem sweeter. Alcohol gives wine body. The higher percentage of alcohol, the more full-bodied the wine (13–15 percent alcohol). Rich meat, fish or chicken dishes that include cream are well suited to full-bodied wines. Low alcohol wines (7–10 percent) pair well with light, simply prepared and flavored dishes.
