Each year during the first three weekends in October, more than 300 Santa Cruz County artists open their studios to the public for demonstrations of the artistic process, art exhibits, and opportunities for visitors to purchase art directly from the source. The tour includes multi-stop work studios like the Tannery Arts Center and individual workspaces scattered throughout the county. Featured media are as varied as jewelry, ceramics, photography and painting. Full Story on page 5

A Fisherman in the Family

My son Noah Gabay caught this 35 pound Salmon at the Santa Cruz Harbor August 12 at 8 PM. Salmon have been coming into the harbor to spawn and the harbor has allowed fisherman to come down and fish. Because so many people responded they wanted to give the kids a good experience fishing so they made the even numbered days for kids 16 and younger only and on the odd numbered days everyone can fish. Kegebein marks 50 years at County Fair

John Kegebein first started working at the Santa Cruz C o u n t y Fair in 1963 when he was put in charge of maintenance. Now, 50 years later, it’s still easy to find Kegebein; most any day you will find him at the fairgrounds working on something. “John’s always been the same — he’s a hands-on, get-the-job-done, humble person,” said Chuck Allen, who started working as the fair manager in 1965. “He’s meant everything to this fair.” Full Story on page 12

PG&E’s plans spark protests P acific Gas and Electric Company is planning on major improvements to its transmission system locally, but since that plan includes the addition of new lines and much larger poles, controversy is building before any ground has been broken. The project, to be constructed along the Freedom Boulevard corridor, will connect a second 115 kV line

between PG&E substations in Corralitos and southern Aptos. It does this by creating a new 1.7 mile-long 115 kV line with new poles, and converting 7.1 miles of existing line into a double 115kV line with larger poles. Work is estimated to begin in the summer of 2015 and finished by fall of 2016. ... continued on page 4
