To Right a Great Wrong On Saturday, August 10, the ladies at the welcoming table at the Kizuka Hall in Watsonville handed us nametags that looked vaguely familiar. On the one side was a place for name, family number, and the words “You are instructed to report ready to travel on” with a blank line underneath. Printed on the back were the names of the ten

concentration camps to which the 120,000 West Coast Japanese and Japanese-Americans had to be relocated after Executive Order 9066 was signed on February 17, 1942. A string attached at one end of the tag would go through a coat buttonhole, sort of like a luggage tag. continued on page 4

It was standing room only in the hall listening to Japanese-American Citizens League Board Member Mas Hashimoto ask, “How can a nation suspend the Constitution?” The answer: “Racism.” He showed us a 30-minute film called “Days of Waiting,” the story of a Caucasian artist, Estelle Peck, who in 1929 had to go to Mexico to marry her sweetheart, Nisei Arthur Shigeharu Ishigo. It was against the law for them to wed in the United States. When Arthur was ordered to report to Pomona Assembly Center, Estelle chose to go with her husband to a “relocation” camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. Her documentation in drawings and paintings of life there gave a moving portrait of the lives of the internees. The film won the Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject in 1990.

The camps were disbanded after the war ended and the internees were released in late 1945 and early 1946. They went back to their West Coast “homes” in towns such as Watsonville and other cities.

Some families were lucky: the American friends and neighbors they had entrusted their property to returned it to them. Some Americans even farmed their JapaneseAmerican friends’ farms for them until they were released.

Other families were not as lucky: unable to get their property back from not-so honorable “friends” and neighbors,

they had to start all over again to establish themselves.

Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston’s 1973 autobiography, “Farewell to Manzanar” tells how, when returning to their hometown, they learned the warehouse where her family’s belongings were stored had been unaccountably “robbed” of furniture, appliances, and everything of value.

Her father had owned several fishing boats — there was no record them. These too had unaccountably “disappeared,” leaving the family with no way to earn a living. This was by no means a unique story; many others suffered in the same way.

Displayed on a table in front of the stage were photographs taken by JACL President Tosh Tanaka of a scene from each of the ten camps. Several elderly survivors of the incarcerations were seated in the audience in the front row.

The Japanese American Citizens League worked for many years to get redress and the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of August 10, 1988. The difficulties were almost insurmountable: from disagreement among the JACL members as to whether or not redress should include monetary reimbursement to running through all the Congressional hoops and overcoming the politics involved. The turning point came in the 1980’s when the JACL formed the Legislative Education Committee (LEC) and asked Grant Ujifusa, originally from Wyoming but

by then an editor at Random House, to serve as strategy chairman. Under his able leadership, his important connections and perseverance, the bill crept along slowly through Congress.

It was a stroke of genius to name the bill H.R.442 in honor of the all-Japanese 442nd Infantry Regiment that saved the “Lost Battalion” (Originally part of the Texas National Guard) in France when it was surrounded by Germans. The 442nd Infantry Regiment is said to be the most-decorated infantry regiment in the history of the U.S. Army with eight Presidential Unit Citations and twenty-one of its members awarded the Medal of Honor in World War II. Two of the 442nd veterans were in the audience and were recognized with a hearty round of applause.

Mr. Ujifusa gave us a further overview of the painstaking process it took to get this done in Washington. He said that for a long time the only states’ representatives who supported the bill were those from Texas, who remembered the 442nd Infantry Regiment’s heroic actions in WWII. Ultimately the Civil Liberties Act — sponsored by California’s Democratic Congressman Norman Mineta, an internee as a child, Wyoming’s Republican Senator Alan K. Simpson, who first met Mineta while visiting an internment camp, and California’s Republican Senator Pete Wilson – which included reparations of $20,000 redress for each internee still living, was signed by President Ronald Reagan on August 10, 1988.

While Mr. Ujifusa was assiduously working in Washington, Ben and Yoko Umeda of Watsonville led the local chapter’s redress and reparation campaign from 1980 to 1984 soliciting funds for the cause.

Their first letter requesting support drew very little response. They sent a second letter and persevered until they were able to collect $58,834.50. The Umedas and Grant Ujifusa were honored for their outstanding efforts. Names of the local donors in the 1980-84 campaign were read aloud and donors or family members of donors were asked to stand to be acknowledged.

To end the remembrance ceremony, the youth in the audience were called upon to escort an internee, or the relative of an internee, to the table of photographs where the former internee placed a rose in front of the picture of the camp where they had been interned.

“Both the boys and girls team return intact and they won league and made it to [the state meet],” says Gruber.

“Early on I have been impressed with their determination and work ethic. I am excited to see what both teams can do at the end of the season. This group can be special.”

The Mariner girls return with both SCCAL and CCS titles under their belt. Perhaps even more encouraging is the fact that they return all of their top 7 girls. Last year, even with 1600-meter state champion Nikki Hiltz out due to injury, Aptos managed to pull together a young team with promising depth.

Ones to watch include Yulisa Abundis, junior, who proved her talent last year by taking 4th in SCCAL Championships and 3rd in CCS Division 3 Championships. Clare Peabody, senior, is coming off a strong track season and looks to lead her team to success. Also returning this year are Matti Peoples, sophomore; Olivia Quinn, sophomore; Karen Jimenez, junior;

Emily Forsberg, sophomore; and Emily Passey, junior. New to the team this year is freshman Annika McBride, who holds the record (previously held by Nikki Hiltz, Clare Peabody, and Matti Peoples) for the Aptos Junior High cross country course.

All varsity boys will also be returning to fight again during the 2013 cross country season. Last year, standout freshman Patrick Olson led his team to win the league title and a second-

Begonia Festival ver Labor Day weekend, Aug 30-Sep 2, we have the 61st Begonia Festival in Capitola by the sea. Music, Entertainment, Horse Shoe and Sand Sculpture contests, a not-to-be-missed begonia filled Nautical Parade, and much more.

It’s a great time for both adults and kids in the Village of Capitola.

How We Got Here: Sixty-One Years of The Begonia Festival

s autumn approaches the California coast, summer fog begins to drift offshore. Skies are clear, days warm, and evenings balmy.

This is the Golden State at its best.

Nowhere is a late summer sky brighter and in a more festive mood than in Capitola, a city with so much “flower power” that it was once known as the Begonia Capital of the World.

The flower industry took root shortly after 1900, when a diversity of bulbs and flowers had been introduced here. The vibrant Begonia, however, was easily the most celebrated. Primary grower James Brown was by 1919 a renowned producer, supplying flower seed as well as Begonias, Freesias and Gloxinias, which he imported from Europe. Brown traveled through Europe in 1920, returning with a honed expertise that helped him double his production.

Shortly after World War II, Capitola-Santa Cruz Airport managers Esther and Russell Rice began promoting Capitola as the Waikiki of the West. Esther, a longtime friend and classmate of the Browns, went to their fields and chose giant blossoms to give away to visiting aviators. Decades afterward, she kept a stack of letters and photographs sent by the pilots once they returned

home and showed off their impressive prize to family and friends.

Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church is presenting the 33rd annual awardwinning Greek Festival in Downtown Santa Cruz. The Greek Food and Cultural Festival has been voted Best Festival again in 2013! The Greek Festival is the longest running festival in Santa Cruz County, which grew from a small celebration in the church courtyard to today’s huge block party.

While it is typical of Greek Churches to have festivals to support themselves, what isn’t typical is that such a small community of Greeks, supports an event that has a crowd of an estimated 15,000 over the course of three days. This event has grown over the years, and the food offerings have also grown with even a vegetarian booth for their loyal fan base.

According to the Festivals spokesperson, Athena Wolfe, “Since Day 1 the key people involved in the Festival’s kitchen have been Anastasia Karastamatis, Jimmy Petroutsas, and Fotini Ballas. Anastasia runs the kitchen and most of the recipes are in her head. She directs a group of up to 12 volunteers providing all of the wonderful Greek food. Anastasia is also called by her title Presbytera as she is the widow of the Priest, John Karastamatis, who established Prophet Elias Church.

“Fotini Ballas possesses the “tribal knowledge” of Greek cooking and is known for being extremely picky on how things are done. She is often kidded for taking apart other peoples dolmas, and reshaping them so they are perfect. She runs the Loukoumathes booth at the event.

Fotini Ballas is making Loukoumathes, a pastry dipped in cinnamon honey and sprinkled with walnuts. (these are fried dough balls dipped in honey syrup, cinnamon and walnuts).

“Jimmy Petroutsas is there preparing meat for souvlaki, and making his own special recipe of rice pudding. We sell the rice pudding at the Festival and it often sells out, though I can’t tell you what his secret ingredients are as he wont’ tell anyone.”

The air will be filled with lively Greek Bouzouki music and the tantalizing aromas of delicious Greek specialties like BBQ Souvlaki (soo-vla-kee), and Gyro (yee-ro). You’ll find the usual crowd pleasers like Moussaka (moo-SA-ka), roasted lamb shank, calamari, Pastitsio (pah-STEET-sio) and many other savory dishes including a wide variety of vegetarian selections.

The Taverna (tavern) will be serving beer, Greek wine and traditional Greek spirits (Ouzo anyone?). After dinner, sweet pastries and delicacies include the ever-popular Baklava (bak-la-VA) and Loukoumades (loo-koo-mathes). This

year the festival is introducing several new dessert items including Baklava Cheesecake, Baklava Brownies, Revani, and Greek Cannoli! In the Kafenio (coffee shop), in addition to handcrafted Greek coffee, they will be whipping up authentic Greek Frappe, a chilled drink that is shaken by hand in the traditional style of cafés and

served everywhere in Greece. This drink won’t be found here in the States!

The Greek Agora (marketplace) includes ethnic jewelry, pottery, clothing and food items. The Kid’s Korner features the ever-popular Mt. Olympus climbing wall, face painting and crafts. Greek Dancers (from all over the Bay Area) dressed in traditional costumes will perform a variety of folk dances that have been handed down for hundreds of years. Dance schedules will be posted on the web site, www.propheteliassantacruz.org, and on Facebook.

But most of all, the Festival’s annual raffle prize includes a one week stay on beautiful Naxos Island, including airfare and ferry transfers.

Capitola Celebrates 31 Years of the Art & Wine Festival T hirty-One years of fine wine, gourmet food, exquisite fine art and entertainment is what the Capitola Art & Wine Festival is all about. Local Artists Carrie Jacobson-May, Barbara Reding and Eric Johnson wanted to celebrate and showcase art in Capitola. The first Art Festival was in held in 1982 on the Esplanade.

It was such a success that the following year more artists were added in addition to a few wineries so that people could enjoy strolling the Esplanade with a glass of wine to sip while viewing art. The Capitola Art & Wine Festival was then created.

Over the years, the Festival grew, adding more wineries, artists, food vendors and entertainment. The Festival embraces the entire Capitola Village encompassing the Esplanade, Capitola, Monterey, and San

“Begonia” from page 7 In 1949, the new city boundaries of Capitola embraced the fields of nearby nurseries spreading. When a symbol was needed for an annual celebration, the choice was easy. Vetterle and Reinelt hybridizing gardens, Antonelli’s Begonia Gardens and the enduring Brown Bulb Ranch all had award-winning lath and green houses within walking distance of the beach.

In 1950, a professional swimmer, Peggy Slatter Matthews, who had performed in the late Thirties with the Billy Rose Aquacade in San Francisco, came to Capitola and soon organized its first autumn water carnival. She chose Begonias to decorate the barges used by

Jose Avenues in a pedestrian only street festival.

Today, the Festival has over 150 fine artists, 22 Santa Cruz Mountains wineries, a dozen local food vendors, a children’s art area, and 2 full days of exciting entertainment including the AfroBrazilian-Samba-Reggae sensation known as SambaDá, cascading waves of surf-rock from the Mermen, sultry rhythm and blues from Nora Cruz, and red hot rockin’ soul from The Fundamentals, plus local dance groups and street performers The Great Morgani and Jetlag the Clown.

Artistic talent ranges from exquisite jewelry to metal sculpture for the home, intricate blown glass, handcrafted leather goods and woodwork, water color and oil paintings, photography, and everything inbetween; even a local face-painter for the children (or the child within). Merchandise including Festival poster, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and more will be available at both Merchandise Booths located on the Esplanade and on Monterey Avenue near the entrances to the Festival.

While the event is admission free, wine enthusiasts may purchase a 2013 Festival glass and tasting tokens at one of the Glass & Token booths conveniently placed throughout the Festival. Parking is free and easy at the Bank of America parking lot on 41st Avenue at the Capitola Mall where you can hop on a free shuttle that drops you directly at the Festival entrance.

The Capitola Art & Wine Festival is the biggest fundraising event of the year, not only for the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce (a non-profit organization), but also for the many local non-profit school and community groups that assist with the Festival. Over the last 21 years, the Festival

Considered the start of our modern festival, the 1952 water fantasy show introduced live music to complement the swimmers as they performed water ballets.

Twelve Begonia-trimmed floats were judged in a water parade, followed by a “fantasy dance” at the Capitola Ballroom.

Capitola Begonia Festival was organized with an official title two years later in 1954. Over coffee, Helen Antonelli and Vivian Benias designed a pageant to showcase the Begonia blossom by itself.

In that 1954 festival six floats used 35,000 blossoms picked local fields.

As the summer of 2013 draws to a close, another weekend will add to 61 years of memories.

New Owners Plan Celebration at Yoga Within

he Yoga Within studio in Aptos, serving mid-county for thirteen years, has recently been purchased by three of its longtime teachers: Amey Mathews, Karen Zelin and Karyn Bristol.

A celebration of the new ownership is planned for the weekend of Sept. 27 – 29, with a combination of open house, refreshments, free classes and workshops. The public is invited.

y all accounts, Albert Hoover, for whom a section of Highway 1 was recently named, cut a dashing figure as a California Highway Patrol officer riding a motorcycle around Santa Cruz County in the 1930s.

Stories abounded about the man, known for being helpful, but also for being a stickler when it came to the law.

“He pulled over my cousin and was Albert Hoover writing him a ticket when he broke his pencil,” said longtime resident Marvin Del Chiaro. “My cousin took out his pocket knife and shaved his pencil for him, and he still finished writing

him a ticket. My cousin loved to tell that story.”

But at a dedication ceremony Wednesday, the officer’s granddaughter Donna Edwards let out a little secret; there was one person who escaped with a warning.

“He pulled over Grandma Mary,” Edwards said. “And he gave her a warning on the preface that she would go out on a date with him. I always got tickled at that story.”

But Hoover’s story seemed to have come to an end on Aug. 30, 1934. While heading north towards home on the Santa Cruz-Watsonville Highway, he collided with a truck that had turned into his path and he suffered fatal injuries.

San Pedro Masahuat, El Salvador send representatives to Celebrate status as Watsonville’s new Sister City

here was a bilingual buzz on the back patio of Jalisco’s Restaurant in Watsonville mid-afternoon on Saturday, August 17. A good-sized crowd of Salvadorans and a few Anglos awaited the arrival of the Vice President of El Salvador, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, and the mayor of Watsonville’s new sister city, San Pedro Masahuat, Carlos Ramos, at a private meeting.

Accompanied by Watsonville Mayor Lowell Hurst, they arrived a bit late after

a press conference to be enthusiastically greeted by about 60 fellow Salvadorans and a few Anglo friends of El Salvador.

One of the people accompanying them was Prof. Hector Perla of UCSC who had given a presentation on July 2, 2013 to the Watsonville city council on establishing a sister city relationship with San Pedro Masahuat. The council voted that day and unanimously approved the proposal.

Former Watsonville mayor Oscar Rios, a Salvadoran and a supporter of the proposal, was also here to greet them. Prof.

Perla introduced the guests in English and Spanish. Mayor Hurst’s welcoming remarks were translated into Spanish.

Since the end of the country’s 12-year civil war in 1992, times have been extremely difficult for most of the Salvadoran people.

International organizations have tried to help the country get back on its feet. Several non-governmental organizations from the U.S. have a presence there. One of these is

Because this was a fundraiser to benefit El Salvador, there was a $40 per person charge. About forty people were expected but well over a hundred showed up! President Cerén arrived about 3:30

p.m. and took his time in greeting every person. Bill Monning, Bruce McPherson, and many other local and state politicians were on hand to present a plaque or proclamation.

Tom French, local businessman who had been to El Salvador in 2012 with Santa Cruz al Salvador, was there with nine other members of SCaS. He had made up badges with the Vice President’s photo in the center framed by an American flag and a Salvadoran flag. The words beneath the flags were “Santa Cruz Welcomes Vice President Salvador Sánchez Cerén August 18, 2013”. Of course, the V.P. loved it!

Rumor has it that he may be El Salvador’s next president – elections are in February 2014.

Great food, an enthusiastic crowd and beautiful weather made for a wonderful afternoon.

Fallen Officer Scholarships Presented

Three Awarded by Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriff’s Association

S

anta Cruz County Deputy Sheriff’s Association (DSA) has been active in Santa Cruz County since 1978.

In 1980, the DSA became a fraternal nonprofit organization dedicated to creating unity among the citizens of Santa Cruz County by organizing events that bring its citizens together.

Since the tragic deaths Santa Cruz Police Department Officers Baker and Butler on February 26th 2013, the DSA looked for a way to honor the memory of these Officers and one of Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office’s own fallen Deputies, Mike Gray who was killed in 1983. In order to convey these Officer’s spirit of improving the community, the DSA has created a scholarship fund that can be applied towards college tuition.

The scholarships were opened to the families of all law enforcement in the county, active or retired. The DSA understands that through these scholarships, they can

hat makes the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce Mixers a little different? Follow me closely here, there’s a lot to digest. One of the most important things in building a strong community is giving back and supporting organizations that provide services to those in need.

Each month, the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture holds Mixers with a different host

business to welcome people into their business and learn about their products and services. Here’s the “giving back” part… the hosting business chooses a non-profit to receive the raffle proceeds from the evening. Some of the beneficiaries from the Chamber of Commerce Mixers have been Jacob’s Heart, Pajaro Valley Women’s Shelter, Second Harvest Food Bank, Teen Challenge Monterey Bay/Pajaro Rescue Mission and Hospice of Santa Cruz County, to name just a few.

This has also created a perfect storm of networking opportunities! First, the hosting business is always encouraged to invite their clients and business associates.

••• Caltrans to Close San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Throughout Labor Day Weekend San Francisco — Caltrans is urging travelers who will be making a trip to the San Francisco Bay Area during

Labor Day weekend to plan ahead, choose an alternate route now, and allow plenty of extra travel time because the San FranciscoOakland Bay Bridge will be closed.

The bridge will be shut down from 8 p.m., August 28, until 5 a.m., September 3, while workers take the bridge’s original East Span out of service and open the new bridge to traffic. Nearly 300,000 motorists daily cross the iconic bridge that connects San Francisco with Oakland, Berkeley, and other East Bay cities.

Thanks to the public heeding previous warnings, Caltrans successfully closed the bridge without significant traffic backups during Labor Day weekends in 2006, 2007, and 2009. Taking advantage of historically light traffic on the bridge during the holiday weekend helps minimize disruptions to motorists, residents, and businesses.

George Drouillard More Than Just a Footnote in American History

W

hen Meriwether Lewis made his report at the conclusion of the Lewis and Clark expedition to president Thomas Jefferson he said “if it had not been for George Drouillard the expedition would have failed.” History records that alongside Lewis and Clark, George Drouillard helped to open the American west.

Today 23-year-old Cory Skyler Drouillard invokes his 4th great uncle George Drouillard as he walks through California coastal cities, towns, and hamlets.

Cory wants to set the record straight, that the third most important person in the Lewis and Clark expedition was George Drouillard.

Cory wants historians and especially the National Geographic channel to get their facts straight when it comes to the importance of George Drouillard to the success of

Cory Drouillard got the inspiration for his trek when he heard chief Tony Cerda of the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel tribe say, “We are not a rich tribe. We do not own a casino and we are not recognized. We are however seeking to purchase our sacred ancestral land at Monterey, California (to) build the first Ohlone village.”

The Tools for a Healthy Back-to-School Season F or parents, family and children are their No. 1 priority. Keeping everyone safe, healthy and happy is a huge part of everyday life. However, each year, parents send their kids back to school knowing they will be exposed to germs, making prevention of sickness a priority.

Statistics show that school-age children can have between seven and 12 colds per year, meaning moms need to be on their guard against germs at home and at school.

So what can families to do ensure their students have a healthy, productive school year?

Teaching Hand washing is our best defense against many kinds of bacteria and viruses that cause infection. It’s particularly important in schools, where lots of things are shared - desks, books, pencils, food, and even germs. Donald’s son Richard, who was just 5 when his father died, had led the effort, but brain cancer took his life in May 2012 at age 84. He had received a plaque of what the sign would look like shortly before his death and chose to have it buried with him.

Richard’s wife Jean Hoover helped unveil the one of the signs that would be placed on the highway Wednesday and said she was overwhelmed by the experience.

“It’s a wonderful day for all the family,” she said. “It’s been a long process, now we start a new era of remembrance.”

Railroad Bridge Rehabilitation Work Approved T he Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) selected low bidder Stacy and Whitbeck, Inc. to rehabilitate four bridges on the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line.

Work will include high priority bridges that require more immediate attention, including the La Selva Bridge. Work on the bridges will start in the fall of this year.

The RTC’s construction management consultant, Hatch Mott MacDonald, provided analysis of the work needed on the bridges and reviewed the bid to ensure that the firm selected is both qualified and responsible.

Based on the inspections of the structures engineering firm (JL Patterson & Associates) hired by the RTC, within the Priority 1 bridges there are bridges that require attention more immediately.

Oliver and His Alligator

“What’s this?” There is laughing and talking. School has started without Oliver.

Oh dear, what will he do? Actually, he isn’t going to do anything because now it is up to Matty’s classmates to figure out how to get their friend out of this sticky predicament. After a number of “creative” attempts to extricate Matty there’s an impressive, colorful “work of art” on the table and, unfortunately, Matty is at the center of it.

With his teacher frantically hyperventilating into a paper bag and the school nurse and principal at a loss of what to do, it is going to be up to Matty’s dad to figure out how to handle this sticky situation.

Zac Retz’s digital art brings this humorous story to life while Jason Lefebve’s zany text explains what’s happing.

Never Underestimate The Power Of a Group of Seniors Working Together

O

n September 24, the California Grey Bears of Santa Cruz will be celebrating their 40th anniversary at their annual Harvest Picnic with 1,500 seniors expected to attend.

The name implies that this organization is a branch of a statewide association. This is not the fact. As Executive Director Tim Brattan explained to me, this is an entirely Santa Cruz County operation and the plan is to change the name to simply “Grey Bears” to reflect the true nature of the local organization.

In 1973, a young woman named Kristina Mailliard and her friend Gary Denny shared fruits and vegetables from their garden with local seniors. When they discovered the needs of their older neighbors, they decided to hold a harvest festival for the senior community. This developed into a group of 100 members.

In a period of two years, the group came to be known as The Grey Bears and had 1,000 members, each one paying $1

An overview of the facilities of the Grey Bears Organization at 2710 Chanticleer Avenue, Santa Cruz: An example of what can be accomplished by a group of determined retirees. a year. By 1984, the membership had grown to 2,000, making it necessary to move to Brown Bulb Ranch. In 1985 they were able to purchase a lot at 2710 Chanticleer Avenue, which is the current location of The Grey Bears.

By 1986 they had refurbished an old chicken coop on the property into the Brown Bag Program warehouse where the weekly food distribution operations continue to this day.

Michael Manfre was the Executive Director and Lynda Frances was the Office Manager. She was soon promoted to Executive Director, a post she held until 2011.

hree works were featured on Saturday, August 3: Noise gate (2013 World Premiere/Festival Commission) by Sean Friar; It Got Dark (2009) by Thomas Newman featuring the Kronos String Quartet, and Alternative Energy (2012) by Mason bates.

When conductor Marin Alsop sprained her wrist and withdrew from her conducting engagements this summer, the call went out to Carolyn Kuan to fill in. She was happy to step in and agreed to take on the recent works scheduled for the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, which took place without its acclaimed music director. The talented Kuan, without question a “Rising Star” who has already risen to great heights, conducted all three works on this night!

O’Neill Sea Odyssey (OSO) engages 4th - 6th grade youth with a hands-on science education program on a 65-foot catamaran on Monterey Bay and in a shore-side education center. It is free and each class completes a community service project. The program consists of an ocean-based science field trip and curriculum used in the classroom.

Friar blended orchestral textures ranging from noises one finds common in cities like his native Los Angeles, to the tranquil canyons that can be easily accessed in the outskirts of that bizarre city environment. Friar created an interesting balance between orchestral sound and silence.

It Got Dark demonstrated Thomas Newman’s orchestral prowess, not only in the film scores for which he is known, but also in an orchestral setting as well.

Newman incorporated the celebrated Kronos String Quartet (amplified) who began the work with a well-voiced chord immediately followed by a recorded voice creating a rather eerie textural effect that was supported at a low dynamic level by the entire orchestra.

The soundtrack was a spoken dialogue of past, local (Los Angeles) old timers that was carefully calculated and introduced at varies times during the work. Sudden, loud

bursts of orchestral sound punctuated the ghost-like texture. This was a well-written, well-performed composition.

Alternative Energy employed a wide variety of sounds to realize his work. This variety ranged from actual junkyard parts including a motor crank of days past, brake drums and related car parts used as percussion instruments. Bates himself was at the helm of his electronic panel interspersing sounds and high energy bursts of synthesized sound textures that fit the overall work quite well. Alternative Energy was Bates’ best work to date in the estimation of this writer. n

ogie, a beautiful Japanese Chin, is waiting for a palace to call his own! This gorgeous one year old came in to an overcrowded shelter as an owner surrender when his family moved overseas. Due to limited space, rescuers asked the Santa Cruz SPCA to come to his aid and within days he was on a transport to Santa Cruz with several other dogs.

Despite his confusion and stress at having lost his home, when he arrived staff and volunteers were impressed with his wonderful demeanor and even temperament. He has now settled in and spends his days wowing people with his regal good looks. From his silky coat to his velvet ears, this is a dog that you will want to stroke and pamper!

As a breed, Chins are the dogs of Japanese royalty and are known for being wonderful companions and lap dogs. The Chin is considered the most cat-like of dog breeds though they are also renowned for their ability to learn tricks and their love of entertaining people. They have a very soft low maintenance coat which requires little more than regular brushing. You will win if you adopt this Chin!

“Grey Bears” from page 27 Volunteers rolled newspapers for local florists and nurseries as a money raising activity and operation S.C.R.A.P. (Santa Cruz Recycling Alliance Program) was incorporated as a fund raiser and to help local businesses recycle their cardboard.

In 1992, Grey Bears purchased an adjacent lot and opened a full time Thrift Store. In 1996, the purchase of a third lot enabled them to separate the Brown Bag program from the Recycling Center. They also entered into a contract with Santa Cruz County to manage the Recycling Center at Buena Vista Landfill.

And, in 2000, through a joint collaboration with the County Board of Supervisors, they opened a full time public Recycling Center on their Chanticleer property.

2002 marked the year the Grey Bears filled a growing need for e-waste recycling, providing facilities for recycling of computers, printers, TVs etc. In 2004 the group purchased four Earth Tubs to deal with food waste, and installed a Composting Pilot Program for the County.

Next came a Computer Lab and classes offered in Computing, Spanish, Cooking, Taiko Drumming and Chair Yoga. A furniture warehouse was added to the thrift store and the Brown Bag program was delivering to 3,400 members.

Frances retired after 25 years and Tim Brattan was selected to succeed her in managing the nonprofit organization. Membership stood at 4,000 and 1,400 seniors attended the 37th annual Harvest Picnic.

The popular Computer and Electronic Store was opened for the public, a refrigerated truck and 2 coolers were added for the Brown Bag Program.

In 2013, the Grey Bears addressed another need by holding the first Repair Café where volunteer “Fix-it Coaches” taught members of the public how to repair their electronic devices, appliances, furniture, etc.

Grey Bears distributes 2.6 million pounds of food to seniors and to local charities that serve seniors every year through their Brown Bag Program. The recycling programs diverts 18,000 tons of waste from landfills every year. Volunteers are the heart and soul of Grey Bears – from gleaning, quality control and composting, assembling and delivering weekly bags of groceries, to running the Thrift Store and Computer Electronics Store, staffing the office and helping with classes and events.
