Honoring those who Serve and Protect

Representative Sam Farr Congressman Sam Farr, a fifth-generation Californian, represents the state’s beautiful Central Coast. Throughout his 20-year tenure, Mr. Farr has been a leading advocate for California agriculture, an outspoken activist for affordable housing and a champion of the oceans.

In Congress since 1993, Farr serves on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, which oversees the distribution of the federal budget.

Farr is the Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development and Food and Drug Administration, as well as sits on the Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs.

Mr. Farr co-chairs the Congressional Organic Caucus, Congressional Travel & Tourism Caucus, Defense Communities Caucus, House Oceans Caucus, and Unexploded Ordnance Caucus.

Prior to serving in Congress, Farr served twelve years in the California State Assembly and six years as Monterey County Supervisor. He graduated from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and attended the Monterey Institute of International Studies and the University of Santa Clara. He began his career in public service in 1964 serving in the Peace Corps in Colombia. He is fluent in Spanish. He was raised in Carmel, California, and is married to Shary Baldwin Farr. The Farrs have one daughter, Jessica, and two grandchildren, Ella and Zachrey.

Mike Blaesser It is with great pleasure that the Aptos Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to the 53rd annual World’s Shortest Parade!

This past year, Conde Nast Traveler named the parade one of the seven best Fourth of July parades in the country. While it’s nice to get such national recognition, Conde Nast is just now discovering what we’ve known for decades: this is a great parade and a great tradition that just gets better with age.

The Chamber is proud to sponsor the parade, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the countless volunteers and organizations that make this such a stunning success year after year.

But our biggest thanks goes to you, the people who get up early to stake out a spot along the curb, who come out to enjoy the pancake breakfast, who come together to march along the parade route.

This is your parade, and we are honored to be part of it.

We are also honored to present as our Grand Marshal this year, the honorable Congressman Sam Farr, who is celebrating his birthday today!

It has been a privilege to serve as the Aptos Chamber of Commerce president this past year. • Do not throw or hand out anything along parade route This includes candy, fliers, balloons, etc., and is for the safety of all children who run out into the street. The child you save from injury may be your own.

• Do not return along parade route until parade is over.

There are designated areas for floats and cars at the end of the parade route. Once your vehicles are parked, you are welcome to watch the parade or go down into the Aptos Village Park for the parade winners announcement and the afternoon activities. Please disperse from the end of the parade route promptly to help keep congestion to a minimum.

The World’s Shortest Parade

Has Come a Long Way!

By John Hibble In 1961, much to the horror of local citizens, a zoning change was proposed that would have allowed a cement batching plant to be built in the center of Aptos Village. Locals rose up against the proposal. Concerned women such as Lucille Aldrich, Anne Isaacs, Babe Toney and others formed the “Aptos Ladies Tuesday Evening Society” and organized themselves to defeat the zoning change.

Their efforts were successful, and after their victory, The event was so popular that a parade and potluck were planned to follow on the fourth of July.

Everyone turned out in old-fashioned clothes and the Monterey Bay Antique Car Club brought 18 vintage cars. The “Sun Tan Special,” the train that once passed through Aptos Village while transporting visitors from the San Francisco peninsula to Santa Cruz stopped for the parade. “It was a happy coincidence that the parade coincided with the train passing through,” recalled Lucille Aldrich

World’s Shortest Parade Continued...

Later that year, when the Southern Pacific Railroad tried to close the crossing in front of the Bayview Hotel, the Aptos Ladies’ Tuesday Evening Society again took action. Inviting the press, they dressed in Victorian clothes and laid themselves down upon the railroad tracks. Eventually, the court decided the Southern Pacific could not close off the right-of-way, and the Ladies were again victorious. This second victory provided the impetus for continuing the parade.

Originally, the parade route was from the Driftwood Gas Station at Trout Gulch Road to the Pop Inn restaurant (Kaubou) and back to the Bayview Hotel. It lasted less than ten minutes. Soon, food booths were set up to help raise money for Mar Vista School and ears of corn were sold. Children’s games and contests were added including a cow-milking contest. The pancake breakfast was added in 1987 and is a cooperative venture between the Aptos Chamber of Commerce and the volunteers.

Kim Adamson Soquel Creek Water District The Aptos Fourth of July parade brings this community together every year for a wonderful tradition of celebrating this unique and beautiful place we call home alongside our neighbors, families and friends. This year let’s also take a moment to reflect on and celebrate another local resource –our water.

As many of you are aware, the Soquel Creek Water District gets all of our water from underground basins and we pump it up through wells. For many years we have been using more water groundwater than can be replenished by rain. This overdrafting has left our groundwater vulnerable to salt water intrusion. The current drought has not caused our water shortage but it has made it worse.

This Fourth of July, as we honor our country and community, and the many challenges we have overcome, let us commit to working together to conserve water to protect our water supply. We know we do great things when we work together. At the Soquel Creek Water District, our goal is to come together to ensure that we leave our children and grandchildren with a sustaining water supply.

In an effort protect our groundwater for future use, Soquel Creek Water District will begin implementing a new, long-term water conservation program by January 1. The new program recognizes that many of our customers are already conserving water—if conservation is a way of life for you, you likely already meet the requirements and won’t be asked to reduce further. You’ll be hearing much more from us as this new program rolls out.

There is a lot you can do now to preserve our future water supply and save water this summer, such as following the District’s everyday water waste restrictions: • Only water your yard in the mornings or evenings • Keep irrigation on planted areas; don’t over-spray or create run-off on sidewalks or driveways • Always use an automatic shut-off nozzle on your hose (we offer these free to customers!)

• Use a broom to clean hard surfaces instead of a hose • Fix leaks right away The District is here to help! We offer generous rebates to make your outdoor watering more efficient including turf replacements, conversion to drip irrigation, graywater and rainwater systems and much more. We also offer free water wise house calls for homes and businesses to help you find ways you can conserve.

Aptos Parade Celebrates 53 Years 1968 Parade Photos

It Takes a Village...

For the small town of Aptos to throw a parade every year attended by thousands, it truly takes a village. The Aptos 4th of July Parade is something the townspeople look forward to and celebrate every July 4. Yes, organizing the Aptos 4th of July Parade takes a village – Aptos Village!

Lucille’s Dream

is Now World’s Shortest Parade It was 53 years ago when Lucille Aldrich and the Aptos Ladies Tuesday Evening Society celebrated the first Aptos Fourth of July Parade. The parade began as a community victory celebration that has expanded into a world-renowned icon. Even today the parade still reflects the small-town community values that were so important to its founder.

As Lucille explained it, the Aptos Fourth of July Parade actually began to celebrate the community’s victory over big business.

It was 1961, the year the Berlin Wall went up, and there was a proposal to build a cement plant in Aptos. Aldrich and her group of friends in the Tuesday Evening Society successfully lobbied against the project.

The membership of the Tuesday Evening Society celebrated the defeat of the cement plant by inviting every-one in Aptos to a Memorial Day barbecue in the fields near the in the center of the village close to the rail-road tracks. Lucille enlisted the help of her friend Hank Shaw, a member of the Monterey Bay Antique Car Club. Hank showed up with 18 antique cars & drivers.

The ladies of the Tuesday Evening Society dressed up in old-fashioned clothes and paraded alongside the antique cars with their children in tow.

As they were parading through the village, a train headed for the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz pulled into the Aptos Station. Many of the passengers decided to hop off and join in the fun. Before they knew it, an impromptu procession of happy folks was marching down Soquel Drive from the Driftwood gas station to the Pop Inn Restaurant (now the Britannia Arms). Little did they know that was the beginning of the World’s Shortest Parade.

Lucille and her friends decided to repeat the celebration by making it an annual Fourth of July parade. The enthusiasm for the event grew by leaps and bounds. The crowd of parade watchers increased from a few families and visitors in 1961 to a few hundred in 1968 to an estimated 25,000 today including participants and spectators.

Early each Fourth of July, lawn chairs and blankets mysteriously appear out of the fog along the parade route and by parade time are filled by enthusiastic spectators. Times have changed since that first parade & Lucille Aldrich would be pleased of what that first victory parade has become.

Santa Cruz is an outstanding place to live, to play, and to work. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy life at the beach while refining their art and working their passion.

Julie Henry, known as Jules to her friends, thought something very close to this when she made the decision to start designing not only for local businesses, but in making the decision to create art that truly reflects the unique community, geography and culture of Santa Cruz.

Professionally Jules is the principal designer and cofounder of nomBat Branding and Graphic Design, as well as recently serving as Creative Director for the local lifestyle company Santa Cruz Waves. Culturally Jules has been able to showcase her work at multiple First Friday Gallery showings, a full season of Pop-up gallery shows and significant exposure at local festivals. Perhaps Julie’s most public work however has been the Victorian design work for LocalSantaCruz.com; a series of designs showcasing the unique elements and history of many of Santa Cruz County’s neighborhoods, parks and surf spots.

This most recent work, for Aptos’ 4th of July “World’s Shortest Parade” has been a milestone goal for Jules. Since she first moved to Santa Cruz Jules has been eager to contribute to our local culture through design for official events. These local events are a big part of what make this such a great community and Jules not only recognized and respected that, but yearned to participate and support our community with great design. We appreciate that great design and thank Jules for this years Official Parade Design, our very own patriotic Sea Otter.

Mike conrad Division Chief Operations Aptos La Selva Fire Protection “The Rocket’s Red Glare, Bombs Bursting In Air…” The Star Spangled Banner while written about the sights and sounds of war are often associated with the sight and sounds of fireworks, and illustrates how fireworks are a part of America’s history. Unfortunately, this time honored tradition often brings about devastating fires, personal injuries, and even death.

With the Fourth of July upon us, I (like other Americans) look forward to watching firework displays. With the hiss of the rockets as they lift into the air; the bright flash of light and the rainbow of colors followed by the loud, trembling boom; the sheer pleasure on the faces of children as they watch intently, eyes wide and mouths scrunched as they echo ‘oaths and aches’ after each explosion.

As a firefighter, I have also seen the fear in the eyes of children when the American tradition goes askew and the look of sheer disbelief as a family witnesses the loss of their home and all of their belongings’ in a raging fire.

Each year firefighters anticipate the devastation that fireworks will bring. Each year we will see fire’s that are started as a result of the use of fireworks and treat patients who have been injured.

Fire in any form does not mix with our wildland areas.

Fireworks, once ignited, are often unpredictable as well as uncontrollable. Once a fire starts it is inevitably too late. It is like trying to stop a bullet once it’s been fired from a gun.

This year fire safety during the Fourth of July holiday is more important than ever. The extremely dry conditions we are experiencing as a result of years of drought have left our trees and vegetation very receptive to fire. The vegetation across Santa Cruz County is some of the driest we have seen. The spring showers have provided plenty of growth in our annual grasses. Our larger fuels, such as trees are at record lows for moisture. The abundance of grass for a fire to get started in and spread to the dry larger fuels is setting the stage for a perfect firestorm. The slightest spark from illegal fireworks can result in a devastating fire, nothing like we have seen in Santa Cruz County for a long time if ever.

Please remember that all fireworks are illegal in Santa Cruz County with the exception of “Safe and Sane” fireworks inside the city limits of Watsonville and on private property in the city limits of Capitola.
