First in our series The Housing Hustle, in which the Ventura County Reporter will examine the experiences of people in Ventura County trying to find housing, stay housed, help the unhoused, and meet the demands for housing.

he Ventura Tenants Union has set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for West Ventura resident Liz Campos, 67, chair of the Westside Community Council, who is seeking housing because she received notice from her landlord in May that she’d need to move out because of plans to sell the property.

“You know the competition to get housing, it’s worse for a person in a wheelchair,” said Campos.

Campos has lived along The Avenue for 20 years. She requires an electric wheelchair due to an assault 34 years ago that resulted in a traumatic brain and spinal cord injury.

She is also currently undergoing chemotherapy for Stage Four lung cancer, although she said the chemo is working and the cancer is “shrinking.” In addition, Campos lives with a retired service dog and her current service dog, making homes

that don’t allow pets off limits.

She qualifies as low income, but she does have an “unrestricted” Section 8 voucher providing a rental subsidy of $1,870 for a two-bedroom unit. She has an unrestricted voucher with accommodations for a house due to a medical condition that causes her to have seizures when she’s exposed to chemicals commonly used in cleaning products. This means she’s unable to live in shared housing or apartment situations.

“To get a house [ in Ventura] for $1,870 is virtually impossible in this market.”

She said she looks at a place nearly every day, but many times the places are not wheelchair accessible. According to Campos, when landlords are asked about accessibility, “they all say yes,” but that’s frequently not the reality. Recently, after a long bus ride to view a prop-

erty in Oxnard, she was confronted with 14 stairs and a manager that told her to leave her chair by the street. A unit with up to three steps can be made accessible with a simple ramp, and Campos has connections through an agency to pay for the installation.

Campos emphasized that in the 10 years that she’s lived in her current house, the property owners have always been “kind and respectful.”

But that appeared to change in May. She’s unclear about why, as she’s lived there for a decade, paid her rent and is unaware of any issues with the landlord.

Her landlord is Steve Squires, a real estate agent and a board member of Habitat for Humanity, Ventura County. Squires did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Campos said that when Squires contacted her on May 25 telling her he wanted to sell the house, “he

didn’t say he listed it. He didn’t say he had a buyer. It’s frustrating, I tried to talk to him, but he won’t talk to me.” She said some community members have come forward to “get together and purchase the house,” and let her remain in it.

“But he won’t tell us how much he wants for it.”

In the past week Campos sent him a letter seeking more time, citing her disability and the challenges of finding a wheelchair accessible place to live.

Because Aug. 15 is looming, the GoFundMe campaign has the goal of raising funds to purchase a van that will be outfitted to accommodate Campos for her to live in as a temporary measure.

“It’s wrong that people who are poor, on Section 8 or otherwise very low income, are segregated from the rest of society,” said Campos. “I’ve met so many really good

New reports show change of recycling focus

by David Goldstein ast Monday (Aug. 2, 2021) was the deadline for every city and county in California to send an annual report to the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) describing and measuring local efforts to meet several state mandates related to recycling and solid waste disposal.

In many ways, the past year was difficult for businesses and public agencies planning and implementing recycling programs, but local recycling for one category of material continued unabated. Local facilities turning yard clippings and lumber into mulch and compost reported increases in tons handled.

Perhaps as stay-at-home orders resulted in more home gardening and home improvement, more yard trimmings and lumber ended up in curbside yard waste carts, rented roll-off containers designated for recycling, and the backs of trucks headed to recyclers.

Fortunately for compliance with state mandates, these materials were among the most important for recycling, given a recent change of focus in recycling.

Until recently, recycling has focused mostly on items like cans, bottles, paper, cardboard and plastic. When California passed Senate Bill (SB) 1383 in 2016, however, a new mandate required recycling half of all organic waste by 2020 and 75 percent by 2025.

In the recycling business, the term “organic 6— — August 5, 2021

waste” or “organics” has a meaning different from the term “organic” in farming. In farming, an “organic” product is one grown without “chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides,” according to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary.

“Organic waste” and “organics,” on the other hand, are terms used to describe waste originating from living organisms and capable of being turned into compost, mulch or biofuel.

Targeting organics for recycling has some of the same benefits of previous recycling.

Resources will be conserved rather than being buried in landfills; jobs will be created, funded at least partly through the recovered value of products produced from recycled material; and landfill space will be saved. Focusing on organics recycling is now a priority for two different reasons, however.

The first reason is methane emission reduction. According to the CalRecycle website, “methane emissions resulting from the decomposition of organic waste in landfills are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions contributing to global climate change.” CalRecycle Information Officer Lance Klug added, “Methane is more than 70 times more potent than carbon dioxide, over a 20-year horizon, [and] methane and other pollutants contribute to respiratory problems, heart disease and other public health issues.”

Secondly, SB1383 also requires 20 percent

of edible food waste to be rescued for human consumption. In Ventura County, one in six people struggles with “food insecurity,” according to the website of our local food bank, Food Share, which also reports serving 75,000 people each month.

Food recovery and food waste composting were areas where Ventura County needs to improve to meet mandates. Currently, food rescue organizations target mostly shelf-stable food and produce. To improve these efforts, food rescue organizations will need more refrigerated trucks, volunteers and logistical coordination to target prepared food, such as deli counter and salad bar end-of-day leftovers and unserved food past its peak of freshness at restaurants, banquet venues and institutions.

Eventually, a website will facilitate collection and distribution of food, but in the meantime, those interested in volunteering, donating, or receiving discarded food can contact the program coordinator of the Waste Free VC Coalition at silvia.lopez-navarro@ventura.org .

Some food unsuitable for consumption by people may be suitable for an animal food manufacturing facility expected to be built in Oxnard by next year. Also, a massive new compost facility, capable of handling both

yard clippings and food scraps, is expected to be permitted for operation by Agromin on the Limoneira farm soon after. In the meantime, no local commercial compost facility has capability and permits to compost food scraps.

Santa Paula community objects to waste site reopening

he crowd applauded Monday night when Dr. Gabino Aguirre, Santa Paula resident, suggested that Timothy Koziol, chief executive officer of RI-NU Services LLC, take the wastewater treatment facility being proposed to his hometown in San Bernardino County rather than reopening the site of a 2014 explosion that permanently disabled several people, including firefighters. Aguirre was talking directly to Koziol on July 26 at a town hall meeting hosted by the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce at the Santa Paula Community Center.

In 2014, the site in question was operated by a company called Santa Clara Waste Water (SCWW). A man named Doug Edwards was the president of SCWW at the time of the explosion. After an investigation conducted by the Ventura County District Attorney, SCWW was found to be criminally responsible for the explosion and was ordered to pay restitution.

The bulk of those payments is held up, pending the sale of the site, which is dependent on RI-NU being granted a “reinstatement” of the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) governing operations. There are still firefighters waiting for restitution payments related to injuries and damage to their lungs that they will suffer from their entire lives.

In May, the Ventura County Planning Department deemed the permit submitted by RI-NU complete and began work on a Mitigated Negative Declaration, the environmental review document for the project. That document has not yet been completed.

“Our position would be that it’s an important part of the marketplace,” Koziol told the crowd on July 26.

“Waste will always find a place to go. If there’s not a place for waste to go there are problems with that.”

Koziol noted that a facility is needed to accommodate waste from several sectors, including agriculture and industry, such as waste from winery processes. The site will also receive and treat certain oil and gas field waste products.

“We have heard from many people in the county about illegal storage, illegal dumping, because there is no place for it to go,” Koziol said. When a company is properly handling waste, he said the public is protected “in the long run.”

“You keep talking about the marketplace,” Aguirre countered, pointing out that the business plan is “investing in environmental degradation . . . I would say, given the treatment that the injured have not received from the organization [SCWW], I would say that you have blood on your hands already. We do not want to see that here again.”

Koziol said it was “frightening” to him that he’s hearing from local officials that illegal dumping of waste is taking place.

The 2014 explosion occurred when a chemical called Petromax used in the processing of waste products was loaded into a waste truck, causing a chemical reaction and explosion as well as spontaneous combustion.

The bank accounts of the individual company leadership of SCWW were not impacted as a result of the settlement agreement reached.

Instead,the restitution amounts are contingent on SCWW being able to recoup monies from being sold to RI-NU, which in turn is dependent on RI-NU obtaining a new permit to operate a waste treatment facility at the same location.

“This looks like environmental racism,” said Aguirre, referring to the largely working class community made up of Latinx residents that live near the site.

“The Santa Clara Valley is asked over and over again to bear the environmental costs for other areas,” said Kate English, a resident of the area. That is a “form of environmental racism. It’s been happening since before the original CUP.” She asked what RI-NU is doing to “grow” along the lines of “equity and inclusion.”

Koziol spent the bulk of his presentation making the case that a wellrun waste treatment facility at that location would benefit the local “marketplace.” He mentioned the payroll of $140,000 a month the company would support and that the hiring would take place in Santa Paula.

“The facility has enormous emotions attached to it because of all of the issues that happened with the accident,” Koziol said during his presentation. “Our intent is to open it, open it safely . . . with higher and stricter guidelines for safety and protocols.”

Several public speakers questioned how Koziol could ensure the facility would be run in a safer

manner when the county, as the agency responsible for enforcing the previous company’s permit, failed to respond to multiple complaints — some received just days prior to the 2014 explosion. Koziol responded that he could “not comment” on the county’s processes or approach to responding to complaints.

Koziol, along with Rob Del Farra of Sespe Consulting, emphasized that if approved the site will only be permitted to handle wastes classified as “non-hazardous” but that some “hazardous materials” will be stored and used on site in the waste treatment processes. Mechanical processes such as shaking, filtering and aerating are used to separate certain types of wastes.

According to Koziol, plans for the site include construction that will protect the facility from flooding and heavy rains, as well as periodic review by the Ventura County Fire Department to ensure they know what is onsite.

Del Farra confirmed the project site is in a FEMA flood zone.

A mixing of such chemicals is what led to the 2014 explosion and Koziol emphasized that their permit application includes several mitigations to prevent such an “accident” in the future, including ensuring that the hazardous treatment chemicals are properly stored in a designated building on site, and trucks carrying waste to be treated into the facility are kept separate from other vehicles.

As of Aug. 3, planning documents, including the initial study checklist and Mitigated Negative Declaration from the Ventura County Planning Department, are “not open for public comment yet,” according to Franca Rosengren, senior planner.

The 30-day public review period has not yet begun. Following that 30-day period, the project will go before the Ventura County Planning Commission and then the Board of Supervisors for final approval.

Those public hearings are slated to occur in early 2022.

K-9 Roscoe K-9 Roscoe remembered On July 28 the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office announced the passing of K-9 Roscoe, a bloodhound who served for 10 years and was specifically trained for “man trailing” to locate lost or missing people. In his career he had eight walk-up finds, including locating a 10-year-old boy in Upper Ojai in 2015. He will be missed by the officers, including handler Michael Grossman.

805 Ag Kids livestock shows and auction Aug. 5-13 805 Ag Kids, an independent nonprofit organization, has for the second year organized a way for kids to show and sell their animals despite the pandemic-induced closure of the Ventura County Fair in 2020 and 2021. The group’s efforts are keeping alive a 146-year tradition of youth livestock shows and auctions in the county.

The auction will be online only, but participants will be allowed to hold in-person showings, which will not be open to the public.

On Aug. 5 and 6, the in-person market shows will take place for 153 participants in local 4-H, Future Farmers of America (FFA), Grange and independent registrants at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

2020 crop and livestock report released On July 29, Ventura County announced the release of the 2020 Ventura County Crop and Livestock report from the office of the Agricultural Commissioner. Gross value of agriculture was estimated at $1.9 million, a small decrease.

Crop values and production numbers were influenced by the pandemic but strawberries remain the top crop at $575.3 million.

Industrial hemp (not the same crop as cannabis) dropped out of the Top 10, with cabbage ranking 10th.

Blueberries jumped 119% with a value of $38.7 million.

Cut flowers saw a 27% decline,

dropping out of the Top 10 for the first time since 1983.

The number of organically farmed acres in the county decreased but the value of organic crops rose 1.8% from 2019, demonstrating strong demand for organically grown produce.

County CEO contract renewed On July 27 the Ventura County Board of Supervisor renewed the five-year employment contract with county Chief Executive Officer Mike Powers that includes a 5% increase in salary to $328,974.83.

Powers began serving as county CEO in 2010 and has consistently received “exceptional” performance assessment ratings from the Board of Supervisors during his 11 years in the post.

New protections for victims of wildfire New state legislation is in effect that offers additional protections for homeowners in the event of a wildfire.

Senate Bill 872 has been signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and includes the following provisions: • Insurance companies are prohibited from deducting the value of land when paying an insurance claim if the wildfire survivor opts to relocate rather than rebuild their home.

• Those under mandatory evacuation orders will receive additional living expenses for a minimum of two weeks, even if there is no damage to their residence. Longer payout timelines for “good cause” are available.

• Insurance companies are prohibited from restricting payout of living expenses in the event of damaged infrastructure but no damage to the actual residence. This applies when damage to power lines and water lines may make the residence uninhabitable. Payouts can include funds for portable generators and portable water sources.

• Four months is the minimum amount of time that additional living expenses must be covered, if requested, in the event of a total home loss.

• When filing claims, wildfire survivors do not have to use a company-specific form for listing lost contents and groupings can be listed such as clothing, shoes, books, rather than having to list individual items.

• Insurance companies must offer a 60-day grace period on payment of policy premiums for properties located within the affected area defined in the declared state of emergency.

A doggone good run Wienerschnitzel owners retiring after 30 years

t’s an unlikely location for a love story, a Wienerschnitzel restaurant. And perhaps even an unlikely setting for a story of community connection. But those are the threads woven together in the story of Bu (pronounced “boo”) and Jenny Hwang as owners and operators of the restaurant (or, in their words, “the store”) for over 30 years.

Bu Hwang’s eyes light up when he shares the story of a young woman who started working at the shop over 30 years ago. During her time as a Wienerschnitzel employee, a group of young men would come in frequently, one of whom would often spend time talking with Bu and Jenny Hwang are selling their Wienerschnitzel after more than 30 years. her. Eventually they were dating and Bu found himself encouraging both of them to finish Photo by Kimberly Rivers high school. He insisted that their school schedules came first, and there was plenty of time to work after school.

He spoke with plenty of pride and joy as he discussed the couple, who eventually married and are still together today. They now run a successful trucking business, and their “first son” is a doctor. They still come by to say hello, and recently took the Hwangs to dinner.

This family’s story is just one that has its roots in the little building on the corner of Seaward and Harbor with the bright yellow roof. A simple fast food joint best known for hot dogs, chili dogs and the like, it has nevertheless loomed large in the community, thanks to the quality and warmth the Hwangs have brought to their enterprise.

Now, the Hwangs are hanging up their aprons and getting ready to retire. As this story goes to print, the Hwangs’ “store” will be under new owners.

Serving community

Four of us were sitting in a corner booth in the restaurant, all masked: Bu and Jenny, and their daughter, Lisa Hwang, who in addition to sharing her recollections helped to clarify or explain the nuances of her parents’ stories. They both speak solid English, but with the masks and different cultural phrasing, the clarification was helpful.

It was just after the lunch rush. The restaurant’s simple interior was spotless. An employee was thrilled to see the Hwangs and said hello to Jenny. Lisa explained that Jenny had recently been ill and staff hadn’t seen her for a while.

The Hwangs began operating the Ventura Wienerschnitzel franchise in July 1990. The first day they opened, breakfast was served from 7 to 10:30 a.m. and grossed just $20. Day two saw $30 in the till. Not a lot of Wienerschnitzel locations have breakfasts; it’s an optional menu.

“Breakfast is my dad’s favorite part,” daughter Lisa Hwang wrote in an email to the Ventura County Reporter about her parents’ retirement.

When they first bought the business, she explained that “it was not that great. Dad was here in the morning, Mom did the night shift.”

Then “little by little” the business grew — success the owners credit to their regulars and word of mouth. By 2011 the store grossed over $1 million dollars, and regularly ranked in the top five nationally for Wienerschnitzel locations. The Hwangs have even won Operator of the Year from the franchise brand. But what seems most important to them is the experience of community that they and their customers walked away with.

Lisa recalled one day in particular when her father came home “mesmerized.”

According to Bu, one morning a young man came in for breakfast. Bu chatted with him and learned that he had just been released from jail. The young man had heard about the country breakfast, particularly the biscuits and gravy, from other inmates and came to try it as his first meal after being released.

“Wow, he knew nothing [about the restaurant] and he came here,” Bu said with a laugh.

That is how people found the Wienerschnitzel: Through word of mouth, as one customer told another, and those customers brought in their friends.

Online reviews confirm the public’s amazement at the quality of the food at what one would expect to be a basic fast food chain. Customers praise the tasty preparation, the surprisingly good breakfast, great service and a clean and ship-shape dining experience. Many mention coming again and again, and knowing Bu and Jenny.

Dan’s story

“We had a lot of really good people, one of them . . . I

will not forget him,” Bu said of a retired teacher named Dan who would come in every single morning, early for breakfast.

“He would sit at that table,” said Lisa, pointing to a small table at the front of the shop.

Bu explained that on several mornings, he’d arrive at his restaurant to find city employees removing graffiti from the building. When he asked them how they knew, the answer was always the same.

New Works, new voices The Ojai Playwrights Conference presents the New Works Festival Aug. 5-15

he Ojai Playwrights Conference (OPC) is beginning its 2021 season by presenting the New Works Festival. This event will take place over two weekends, August 5 through 15, and will be hosted on a virtual stage in keeping with current health concerns. A total of eight plays will be streamed over the course of the festival, with each play being streamed twice.

The OPC is a nationally acclaimed program that has fostered several eminent playwrights. Each summer, it congregates theater professionals for a two-week conference that culminates in the New Works Festival.

Elizabeth Irwin, one of the playwrights, describes how the program impacted her. “When I was first accepted into the Ojai community, the play that I was working on wasn’t even finished . . . I definitely needed some guidance as far as shaping it into a story. The dramaturgs that OPC set me up with were absolutely invaluable.

Their time and generosity really helped me shape the play into something that I’m proud to present to people.”

The virtual stage

Overseen by artistic director Robert Egan, OPC provides a unique opportunity for blossoming playwrights to develop their storytelling aptitude.

The conference offers a rigorous, politicallyconscience program that teaches playwrights how to write stories that reveal something about the world through the lens of each individual’s experiences.

This process aims to create a diverse generation of storytellers who are unafraid to tackle the most polarizing subjects and humanize them in the eyes of an equally diverse audience.

“We are a theater organization that is completely dedicated to playwrights and their plays that take on the great social, political and cultural challenges of our moment, our era” says Egan. “We are playwrights that examine the relationship between individuals and social realities and the dynamics of those realities.”

And currently, our reality is set mostly in the virtual space, something that playwrights, directors and performing artists in general have had to grapple with.

“When we’re together on the lawns or in the theaters of Ojai, it’s very easy to get people excited about what we’re doing,” Egan explains. “There’s people who volunteer housing and these big community meals, and they’re rubbing shoulders with these great playwrights, these great actors and directors. It really enriches their lives, and some of these relationships continue for a lifetime . . . Now that we’re virtual, we just don’t have that.”

Live theater is truly an inimitable way to experience a story. Unlike a film, you are witnessing the art being created whilst simultaneously seeing the finished result.

“What’s so attractive about a live show, I think, is the danger of it,” says Ramiz Monsef, another one of OPC’s playwrights. “Something could go wrong or something could go amazingly right. It could be one of those shows — and I’ve had this before — where something goes wrong but the people on stage magically turn it into something even more special. The live audience is crucial to live theater, as playwright Julia Izumi describes. “There’s this big debate about whether theater could happen without an audience, which is a question we certainly asked a lot during the pandemic since so much of theater was virtual. The conclusion I personally made while witnessing all this is that I don’t think true theater can

happen without an audience. The audience is kind of another character . . . the energy that they bring is so much a part of theatrical storytelling.”

Another part of theatrical storytelling that OPC aims to emphasize is the importance of contemplating individual, real-world experiences and interpreting them into the world of a play’s characters.

“It became clear to me pretty quickly that my writing would be relatively personal,” says Izumi.

“It was expressing everything I was processing and thinking through in the moment. I don’t think I had always set out with those intentions, but it came naturally and it made a lot of sense given who I am and the position I had in the greater scheme of the world.”

An artist’s mission

Storytelling is at the core of all forms of art, and the artists’ goal is to tell you something about the world by telling you something about their own unique perspectives. Different mediums and genres have different ways of approaching this, but the ambition is the same. Honesty in art reveals truth about reality.

“I’m writing mostly horror these days, but I started writing comedy because I really do love making people laugh,” says Monsef. “I love the catharsis of laughter . . . but for some reason, it can be harder to get respect for comedy, which is weird because it’s the hardest thing to do. But then I realized that horror and comedy run parallel to each other. With these two genres, in order to be significant and effective, they have to be about something real.”

OPC writers hope that their message will not only challenge the audience’s preconceptions, but also encourage dialogue.

“When you see a play, there’s 250 people there and all of them have just experienced the same thing,” notes Egan. “There’s talk and there’s discourse about what they just saw and how it relates to the world we live in. That’s what a live show is, you’re pulsing with the rhythm of real people in a real space.”

Full passes for one or both weekends of the New Works Festival are available for $100-$200; limited tickets are also available for individual plays at $25 each. In addition, OPC’s Foundry Project will also begin in the fall with a total of 14 playwrights participating across both events.

“The July 2021 Ventura Music Festival should loom forever in their memories of extraordinary music engagements,” said Executive Director Susan Scott of VMF per11:52 AM formers Aubrey Logan, Time4/5/21 for Three and Andrea Roberto. “Each artist said as much at the opening of their concert — that our festival was either the ‘first’ or their ‘first major’ live performance after the world’s very long timeout.”

String trio Time for Three, in particular, noted the “great audience energy” and declared this year’s VMF their best-ever concert.

“Reviews are in and on a scale from 1-7, we received a 6.7 — nearly perfect review,” said Cathy Butter, mar-

keting and events coordinator. “Consistent high marks for Time For Three made them the festival favorite, but not by much. In fact, they told our technical director that our festival was the best concert they had ever performed in and I would bet the excitement coming from the audience had a lot to do with it.”

Which, in the words of Scott, just goes to prove that “great performances and great audiences go together and the alchemy involved produces a ‘festival.’”

VMF staff and volunteers are on a much-deserved hiatus until Labor Day, but they did share with the Ventura County Reporter some photos that express the joy and merriment of the occasion. While the concerts were contactless in keeping with health and safety guidelines for live performances, a launch party was held on Wednesday, July 21, at the house of Julia Namba to kick off the festivities.

included a wonderful tang from the tomatillos.

Right in the middle was the bright orange salsa, made with chipotle peppers.

We were the only diners at an indoor table (there’s also a small outdoor patio in the back), but the restaurant was plenty busy: Numerous people of all ages came and went, picking up to-go orders. I got the impression that this is a local favorite for a quick, tasty meal on the run.

Once our food was served, I was right there with them.

The Alambre Sabores included a great mix of flavors: salty ham, marinated pork, tender steak, sweet pineapple, with onions and bell peppers for sharpness and melted cheese for creaminess.

Very good (especially with one of those flavorful salsas) and quite filling (especially when eaten inside a corn tortilla).

It’s easy to see why those potato tacos are so popular — potatoes, pasilla chiles and jack cheese are an inspired combination; I could have eaten these all day. They went particularly well with the green salsa. The cheese on the mushroom tacos appeared to have been broiled; it was dark brown and a bit crispy. They tasted ok, but I didn’t love the texture.

My favorite was the al pastor taco, piled high with marinated pork bursting with flavor. It had the perfect balance of tender, chewy and crispy. I love a good al pastor and this did not disappoint.

We were fans after eating here just once.

Thanks to GrubHub, we can easily get our Taqueria Cuernavaca fix anytime. In regular rotation at our house are the al pastor burrito topped with tomatillo sauce and the pizzadilla — a twist on the quesadilla with asada and al pastor, cheese, a mild red sauce, guacamole, sour cream and . . . wait for it . . . Cheetos!

Even among the many authentic Mexican food options in this area, Taqueria Cuernavaca is worth checking out. Lots of different items to try, all perfectly prepared, with big flavor and modest prices (everything is under $15). There’s a location in Oxnard, too. It’s not the only place of its kind, but it does Mexican food, and Ventura’s Taco District, proud.

I’m a woman in my early 20s. The guy I’m dating brought me to meet his friends.

Psychologist Tracy Vaillancourt separated female research participants into random groups. She compared one group’s reactions to a 20-something woman walking into a classroom dressed “conservatively” (in a loosely fitting shirt and khaki slacks) with the other group’s reactions to the same woman dressed “provocatively” (in a very short skirt and a tight, low-cut shirt). Dressed conservatively, she was “barely noticed by the participants.” When she entered in skin-baring sexywear, almost all the women “aggressed against her.” They rolled their eyes at her, gave her “once-overs,” and shot her “death stares.” After she left, many laughed at her, ridiculed her appearance, and/or suggested she was a man-hopping sleaze.

To avoid these costs, we need to avoid being exposed to disease in the first place.

Helping us do that is the job of our “behavioral immune system.” This is Schaller’s term for a suite of psychological mechanisms that function as our early warning system, helping us identify signs of pathogens in our social environment and motivating us to feel, think, and behave in ways that keep us from getting invaded by the buggers.

For example, social psychology grad student James B. Moran and his adviser, social psychologist Damian Murray, find that reminding research participants of the looming threat of infectious disease puts a damper on the appeal of casual sex and their inclination to have it down the road.
