NEWS Environmental science training for Ventura teachers Recruiting underway for grant funded program

entura Unified School District (VUSD) is searching for eight science teachers at the middle and high school levels to receive training and support for a new environmental science program titled Ventura River Action Network (V-RAN).

The VUSD program will focus on the monitoring and restoring of the Ventura River Watershed and the support and removal of the Matilija Dam. The program is designed to collaborate with local and state environmental organizations working on those issues.

The program will be administered in partnership with the MERITO Foundation, Ventura Water and U.C. Davis Center for Community and Citizen Science. It is funded through a three-year National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Bay-Watershed and Training Grant Award.

The program offers professional development field training for teachers, as well as webinars and science curriculum, with stipends for eight science teachers per school year over three years, along with live and virtual monitoring. Once underway, the program will involve 600750 local students within the Ventura River Watershed and related coastal areas.

One feature of the program includes a STEM competition in which students will design a plan to reduce the footprint of their school campus.

NOAA’s educational program is based upon the concept of providing Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs) with a focus on “locally relevant, authentic experiential learning for K-12 students.” These learning environments can be both indoor and outdoor and will be aimed at increasing “understanding and stewardship of

Ultimately the program seeks to prepare students to identify environmental issues around them, and be able to come up with solutions so that they will be empowered to protect and restore watersheds.

Grant funding is awarded on a regional basis and offers specific place-based STEM resources and expertise both for the training of teachers and the implementation of the pro-

gram as local education priorities are identified.

Report water wasters, but know the difference of line flushing

I

n prison, inmates discourage reporting misbehavior to authorities, using the slogan, “Snitches get stiches.” In high school, reporting infractions of the rules might earn someone the insult of being called a “narc,” short for “narcotics officer.” But in both cases, telling on someone is probably actually good for them in the long run.

Reporting a water waster is similar. Rather than assessing penalties for first offenses, water purveyors generally issue warnings, and if the wasteful behavior stops, the offending party saves money on their water bill.

The list of infractions, and the number to call to report water wasters, depends on where you live. Look at the phone number on your water bill to determine who to call for water reporting in your area, and look at the website of your water purveyor to find out the rules. The following violations in areas served by California American Water are typical: It is a violation to run sprinklers during rainfall or for 48 hours after rainfall; water may not be used to wash hardscape; no irrigation runoff or overspray is allowed on sidewalks, streets or driveways; vehicles may be washed in driveways only if a hose has a positive shutoff valve; all leaks must be fixed within 72 hours; restaurants may serve water only upon request; and hotels must provide guests with the option to request that towels and linens not be laundered daily and must provide prominent notice of this option.

As I noted in my column last week, it is also important to report when water is being wasted on an enormous scale through breaks of main lines or service lines. But there is one activity often mistaken for either a main line break or a waste of water: line flusing. Line flushing uses tremendous amounts of water, but it is necessary to maintain water quality by removing sediment and the build-up of internal corrosion over time. Water crews force water through mains at high speed and discharge the water through hydrants, usually for at least 30 minutes, until the water runs clear. For safety, and so they can immediately see when the water is running clear and stop the flow of water as quickly as possible, they either do this work during the day or use bright lights for work at night.

In addition to the high use of water and the potential inconvenience of puddling, line flushing is also a source of complaints because minerals such as iron removed by the flow can discolor water in homeowner’s pipes. In some cases, this tinted water may discolor white laundry. Running cold water through a faucet clears discolored water.

While some water line maintenance crews simply open hydrants and flush water into storm drains, others have better opportunities. For example, the city of Thousand Oaks is fortunate to have its wastewater treatment system in Hill Canyon, downhill from the city, and is also fortunate in that this system

has permits to discharge into Conejo Creek, which the Camrosa Water District then mostly diverts and sells to landscape and agricultural customers.

Water crews in other areas also run hoses from fire hydrants into utility service accessways (USAs, formerly called manholes), sending water to sewers instead of storm drains, but pumping costs are higher, and availability of USAs is often lower. For example, since nearly all of Camarillo’s wastewater is recycled for park fields, road medians and agriculture, crews there flush to sewer whenever possible, but flush to storm drains in some parts of the city.

The water administrators for the city of Ventura have a solution for saving line-flushed water: using a Neutral Output Discharge Elimination System, called “the NO-DES truck.”

The truck accompanies crews to line flushing sites, captures discharge, filters and disinfects the water, and puts it back into the distribution system, minimizing waste. In cases where water cannot be recirculated, the NO-DES truck hauls away the water for use on city trees, landscapes, and park grass.

So, report waste, but not line flushing.

very 10 years, with the release of new census data, local governments must redraw the lines of electoral districts, including county supervisorial districts. This year, due to the late release of the census numbers as a result of the pandemic, municipalities have a shorter window in which to complete the redistricting process, which must be complete by Dec. 15.

The census data released will also be used to determine federal representation and has resulted in California losing seats as state population numbers have declined.

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors is hosting online and telephonic public meetings to inform the public and receive input.

Five online meetings began on Tuesday, Aug. 31, and will continue through Sept. 13. These meetings present the public with an opportunity to give the supervisors input on how the districts should be drawn based on the new census data.

Data released indicates a 2.7% increase in population within Ventura County. In 2010, the previous census, the county population was 823,318. The 2020 Census, counted in 2019, came in at 843,843. Each district should be as close in population as possible.

The current public input period will be followed by more public meetings where the draft maps of the new proposed districts will be available for review and comment.

District criteria

State law mandates certain requirements about districts. Changes since the last redistricting 10 years ago also prohibit attempts to create new districts that allow current elected officials to remain in office.

Requirements include that districts must share borders with each other, that local neighborhoods and communities be kept within the same district and not be split up, cities should be kept within a district as much as possible, and that whenever possible boundaries between districts should be easily identifiable, like rivers, streets or highways. Districts should also be somewhat “compact” and not stretched out to include particular areas. In no case should districts be drawn with consideration of benefits or harm to one or more political parties.

Community of Interest

In Brief

People who live in a particular neighborhood or community with unique interests can ensure their community maintains its representation and is not divided in the redistricting process. The county has a Community of Interest form online. While it asks for a first and last name and email address, none of those are required and the form can be submitted without providing any personal information.

Examples of a Community of Interest impacted by the county redistricting process could be a historic area, an equestrian community, or other cultural area in county unincorporated areas.

The form asks about “common interests” in the community, where it is located, important cross streets and how the community can be impacted by the issues addressed by the supervisors. The form is online at www.ventura. org/redistricting/community-of-interest-online-form/.

Photo submitted Off-road rescue near Lockwood Valley On the morning of Aug. 26 Ventura County Sheriff’s officers responded to a 911 call from a family member of an offr-oad motorcycle rider reporting his bike had broken down and he was stranded in a remote area on Halfmoon Trail. The trail, located in the Los Padres National Forest, is considered very challenging.

Rescuers found the bike and followed shoe print tracks to Sunset Campground as temperatures reached over 90 degrees. The deputy found boots and protective gear left on the ground, with sock prints in the dirt.

Additional resources were called in and a deputy out of the Lockwood Valley office located the rider on Piru Creek Trail. He was dehydrated but otherwise in good condition and was able to hike out a short ways to get a ride in a sheriff’s office off-highway vehicle.

National forests closed due to fire danger The National Forest Service has announced the closure of all national forest areas in the Pacific Southwest Region due to extreme fire risk. The area has been at a rating of National Wildfire Preparedness Level 5 since July 14, 2021, indicating the highest level of wildland fire activity.

The temporary closure is in effect through Sept. 17.

Certain forest access is exempted from the closure including those with specific Forest Service permits, those with special use authorization, and those with a non-special-use written authorization for non-recreational activities.

Camarillo man charged with stealing $1 million Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko has filed charges against Steven Franklin Gordon on several counts of grand theft, forgery, identity theft and credit card fraud.

Nasarenko alleges that Gordon, in his capacity as an insurance agent, stole over $1 million from three clients through unauthorized withdrawals on their annuities and value of life insurance policies.

Gordon was arrested on Aug. 26, 2021, posted bail, was released and is scheduled for arraignment on Sept.

9 in Courtroom 12 of Ventura County Superior Court.

The California Department of Insurance participated in the investigation and states there could be more victims.

Zeretzke, a music teacher in Ventura County, founded the Ojai-based nonprofit Flutes Across the World in 2009, which had a mission of connecting American children to children in other parts of the world through music. In what would be called the “tainted flute case,” the investigation uncovered that Zeretzke would ejaculate on the flutes that would be given to children. He also used the Internet to connect with minors and the current charges are a result of Zeretzke pleading guilty to coercing a female minor outside of California to produce pornography between December 2016 and February 2017.

In court documents included with the sentencing, prosecutors stated Zeretzke “preyed on young, impoverished girls in Third World countries and used his Flutes Across the World program as means to contact and sometimes take advantage of those girls.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Catharine A. Richmond, with the Violent and Organized Crime Section, and is part of Project Safe Childhood, an ongoing initiative of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Local groups join environmental justice rally in Sacramento On Aug. 30, the Parents Against Santa Susana Field Lab (PASSFL) and the Social Justice Fund for Ventura County participated in a protest, with dozens of organizations and groups at the state capital demanding the California Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Toxic Substances Control act immediately to clean up various contaminated sites across the state, including the contamination from rocket fuel testing and a partial nuclear meltdown at the Santa Susana Field Lab in Simi Valley.

“We were promised a comprehensive cleanup of the radioactive and chemical waste site near our homes would be completed by 2017. The soil cleanup hasn’t even begun,” said Melissa Bumstead, a Simi Valley resident and founder of PASSFL. Her daughter and other children in the area have been diagnosed with rare forms of cancer. “DTSC and CalEPA are refusing to follow science and protect the health of vulnerable communities.”

Connection to nature Melissa Baffa aims to build on strong roots at Ventura Land Trust

That’s when the fire in my belly really started.”

Melissa Baffa glows when she talks about nature, conservation and where those pieces meet in education. She recently guided the Ventura County Reporter on an exploration of the Big Rock Preserve on the Ventura River, just below Foster Park in Ventura. It’s one of several properties owned and managed by the Ventura Land Trust (VLT), where Baffa is just three weeks into serving as the organization’s new executive director.

She shared about her background and desire to build connection with nature across the community, noting that it’s good for both people and the natural world for the two to be tethered.

Blackboards and biology

Baffa holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from California Lutheran University, and a single-subject teaching credential from California State University, Northridge. But her focus on biology wasn’t always the plan. In her final year at Agoura High School, her path for college shifted direction.

“I thought I was going to go to college and major in English . . . I love language, writing . . . I was going to be an English teacher.” She registered for a biology class in her senior year to “sop up a few more credits.”

When the teacher brought back a “live plankton tow” and put some drops of water under a microscope, Baffa’s mind shifted.

“When I saw all the plankton swimming around and moving, I was hooked. From that moment on I knew I was going to study biology.”

Nevertheless, she still pursued a career in education, and was a classroom teacher for 10 years, teaching seventh and eighth grades at Sinaloa Middle School in Simi Valley, and marine biology for the Upward Bound program for high school students through CLU. “I left teaching when I started having a family . . . and went into nonprofit work . . . it offered more flexibility.”

Biology and education meet naturally in the nonprofit world, where Baffa has served since 2008.

In every position she has held, she has worked at the nexus of nature and education, where the human connection to the natural world moves and flexes in response to the “muscle” of education, which helps to bolster our understanding of the environment. She worked with the Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast at the organization’s property at the base of Sulphur Mountain near Highway 150, then most recently with the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum, where she served as development officer in charge of foundations and corporate relations.

“I had always loved nature passionately,” she recalls. Her experience growing up outdoors, hiking, camping and just “exploring,” fed her inquiry into biology, where she gained a deep “understanding and knowing of how things worked” in nature. “Even if I didn’t know exactly, having enough information to try and guess, why is this, this way?”

In the months just before the pandemic, the VLT incorporated under its umbrella two local educational programs — Once Upon a Watershed and Ventura Wild — offering many touchpoints to nature for children in various settings.

“Exploring the deep sea can be so abstract,” she says, but by having storytellers like Baffa act as a conduit between the science in progress and the public, an interpretation occurs that builds connection.

This is the approach she brings to her work locally focused on connecting people to the natural world where they live.

Boosting VLT’s signal

Baffa’s skills in development in the nonprofit sector will be valuable in continuing to “raise the profile” of the Ventura Land Trust in the coming years, one of her key priorities. She points out that the organization changed its name a few years ago (it was formerly the Ventura Hillsides Conservancy) and many in the community aren’t aware of the reach of the organization, which now manages properties across the county, even in Simi Valley and Moorpark.

She points to Harmon Canyon, which the Ventura Land Trust acquired last year and has since opened to the public: She says many people aren’t sure whether it’s a county or city property. The VLT owns and manages the land, so technically it is private property, but the VLT intends to preserve it for the public’s use in perpetuity.

Another property underutilized by the public is Willoughby Preserve, near the estuary at the mouth of the Ventura River.

It’s accessed off the bike path near the small parking lot on Main Street near the river. While the gate is usually closed, she said people can “duck through. I’d like to see more people exploring there.” Historically there’s been an issue with home-

less encampments in the area and Baffa recommends visiting with “a buddy,” but the VLT also has a steward who patrols the area frequently.

Another issue at both preserves along the river is the invasive arundo, and educating the public about the plant, and the need to remove it, is part of the “storytelling” of the organization. The VLT has spent years working to eradicate the “thirsty” plant, which Baffa says is just like grass, sucking up water. Everytime a big rain comes, however rare that might be, it will bring the plant downstream again to take root.

Projecting ahead into her first few years with the VLT, Baffa says that “finessing” the strategic plan for the organization in light of recent rapid growth is essential. She explains that the strategic plan is an important way for an organization to tell its story to the community it serves.

Ocean explorer

Many times, connections with the natural world get lost in translation or feel distant and remote. Baffa has been a part of breaking down that remoteness with an expedition to the deep sea.

In 2016 she was awarded a fellowship with the Ocean Exploration Trust to travel aboard an exploration vessel looking into the ocean depths with a deep diving submarine. She was part of the communications team that ensured people around the world could submit questions and comments directly to the divers. It was an experience of a lifetime.

“It was my responsibility and an incredible opportunity to go out on the ship and man the communication station [during the deep sea dives] then to help bring in the public, who were sending in questions and comments via our portal, into the conversation.” Her role was to ensure that the public felt “they were a part of it, more than just passive observers . . . [to] interact with our team conducting the dive.”

Baffa watched along with people around the world as the exploration literally put light on habitats and creatures that had “never had light on them, never had human eyes on them before.” A powerful part of that experience was in witnessing “their wonder, vicariously. I was in the same enthralled state of wonder.”

She says she “gets goosebumps every time I talk about it, this globally instantaneous connection,” describing it as the “closest thing to a religious experience. Some people are really lucky to have had those kinds of experiences in nature.” She

Baffa lives with her family just up the river from Big Rock. She has found that the diversity of species that are drawn to the riparian areas along the Ventura River throughout the year make it an attractive place to explore and live, even for the human species.

“I personally have a selfish vested interest in seeing wildlife thrive in this area, it’s part of the reason we moved here,” she says. When they first moved, she had a photo album on social media she titled “New House.”

“One of my friends commented, ‘only you would have a New House album that doesn’t actually have any house photos, only bugs, frogs and wildlife,’” a laughing Baffa admits, adding, “that does sound like me.”

Baffa pauses to notice the sounds by the river: a red-headed woodpecker knocking on a nearby oak, or the rustling of the wind through the willows and cattails. A chirping that sounds like a bird, but that is actually a ground squirrel calling out a warning that could be about the raptor flying overhead, or maybe a bobcat or other predator we can’t see.

Going beyond sight to sound: According to Baffa, exploring nature with all our senses is a key part of building a strong connection with the natural world.

Whether she’s fostering connections with a global audience through the power of technology, or helping a single person appreciate a local tide pool or riparian community, Baffa is excited to keep building those bonds in the coming years with the team at the Ventura Land Trust. “[Nature’s] good for us . . . and it’s good for nature,” she says. “It’s that cliche story, right? The Lorax — who’s going to speak for the trees? If we don’t have people who are passionate about nature, who’s going to speak up for it?

ome women find their identity by pressing against glass ceilings, others by pressing against glass doors . . . and pressing hard enough to open a portal that expands our vision and understanding of the human form.

Kristine Schomaker’s nude silhouettes against frosted glass doors serve as a figurative entry into her curated exhibition, Perceive Me, which is currently on display at Studio Channel Islands in Camarillo through Sept. 25.

Raising questions about what we obscure and what we reveal when we create a public versus a private identity, Schomaker decided the time had come to strip away exterior trappings and lay bare her most authentic self.

Having struggled with her weight and with an eating disorder, Schomaker had grown weary of being judged by others and decided to reclaim her self-perception in her journey towards self-acceptance. When she invited 60 artists to collaborate by creating nude portraits of herself, they responded enthusiastically, with artwork ranging from paintings, drawings and photographs to sculptures, video and 3D printing.

“My journey is about learning to love my body,” she said, but it’s also “about building

community among artists . . . Even though it’s about me and my body image, it’s also about every single one of those artists who came together in this community that I created.”

In comparison, the local community in Camarillo who has come to view the artwork has reacted to the exhibition in a variety of ways. “I’ve never heard so many people come into the gallery and just make some sort of vocal exclamation of surprise,” said Peter Tyas, executive director of Studio Channel Islands. “Everybody who has come in, regardless of where they are on the spectrum of having an arts education . . . is surprised by how they react. And that’s the mark of a great exhibition.”

Tyas noted that the exhibition is “intentionally provocative” and “daring” because it “celebrates the bravery of standing naked in front of somebody, and the bravery of accepting your own body, and presenting your own body for others to accept.”

He added that he is fascinated by how viewers are “confronted by this exhibition.

And it says a huge amount about who you are, and what your view of the human figure is, in how you respond. So some people come in, and they are just delighted, and they laugh, and they see the humor, and they see the fun. And they see the bravery of the idea.

The exuberant vitality of Schomaker’s personality shines through, particularly in the giant sculpture at the entrance and in playful pastiches of Rubens and Botticelli, which engage viewers with the changing face of beauty over the centuries, defamiliarizing their vision and helping them see the original artworks anew. The voluptuous, luxurious flesh of a Rubens model sparks a reminder that not so long ago American culture privileged the full figures of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor.

As a part of the body positivity movement that encourages acceptance of all shapes and sizes, Schomaker’s exhibition arrives at an auspicious moment, when plus-size models now appear in Victoria’s Secret catalogs and celebrities like Lizzo grace the stage.

Coming to terms with self-acceptance has been an arduous journey for Schomaker, who works as a painter as well as a curator and artist manager. While completing her master’s in art and art history at California State University Northridge, Schomaker created a social media avatar on Second Life Virtual World, which freed her from her actual physical form in order to emphasize her personality instead. In contrast, the current exhibition seeks to showcase the interaction of her flesh and spirit, form and personality.

Such freedom and courage also inspired her to shave her head a few years ago. “It was the most freeing thing I’ve ever done,” she said. “I don’t want to be defined by my physical attributes. I don’t want to be defined by my hair. I don’t want to be defined by being fat . . . And so I swore that I wouldn’t grow my hair out until things change.”

Schomaker doubts she will witness such a change in her lifetime, but the audience at her exhibition is already witnessing such change in action.

Moorpark College music department students will open the show at 5 p.m. in the Moorpark College Campus Quad at 7075 Campus Road, Moorpark. The college’s theater students will assist with production.

“I’ll have songwriting students, three students, perform their music,” he says. “They’ll have a chance to play their music in front of an audience and share their songs.”

The Ondrasiks have hosted multiple charity concerts in the community. Their 21-year-old son is in his last semester at Moorpark College.

When tigers Neil and Karma came to the zoo in 2017, they were each around 50 pounds. Today, Neil weighs 375 pounds, and Karma weighs 275, Zoo Development Coordinator Mara Rodriguez stated via a Aug. 18 press release. “They need a larger enclosure, and the community can have a part in it by coming to the concert. Concertgoers will be bringing this project to the finish line.

The new exhibit will include two sections for Neil and Karma with a connecting bridge that zoo visitors will be able to walk under.”

Neil was rescued as a 4-month-old cub from a private residence in the Hollywood Hills after being spotted in a popular YouTuber’s video. The cub was sent to America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College to live and rehabilitate with his companion Karma, who was donated by another zoo.

So, when the San Fernando Valley native and his wife, Carla, learned the zoo needed to raise funds, they offered to host a benefit.

“Carla, being my wife, offered up my services,” he says with a laugh. “I think the timing is great. Being locked down during the pandemic, I haven’t played many live shows.”

“I know a lot of people are dying to get out and see live music,” he continued. “I thought we should do an outdoor show for whoever wants to come. I’ll sing a few songs and raise money for the tigers. It’s a cool project.”

Moorpark College is partnering with the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter for “Concert for the Cats” at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10. Proceeds from the concert will assist in the completion of America’s Teaching Zoo’s Tiger Retreat Habitat for Bengal tigers Neil and Karma. Tickets start at $55. Ondrasik and his family moved to Thousand Oaks about 10 years ago. He discovered its impressive school system when he visited a nearby studio to make the 2006 album Two Lights, which eventually spawned the single “The Riddle.”

It was only recently that Ondrasik heard the zoo is a teaching facility.

“My son was attending Moorpark,” he says. “I said, ‘Let’s go check it out.’ The first time we went, they were celebrating Ira, the lion. He was having a birthday and they’re building a new habitat for him. I didn’t know we had this little cool zoo in our backyard.

They do a little show for kids with the animals, like you’d see at the San Diego or LA zoos. It’s cool and quaint. The people who run the zoo are so passionate about what they do. The kids are in heaven, learning and pursuing their passion. It’s a really happy, cool place.

These days, we need a lot of happy, cool places.”

Ondrasik is planning an East Coast/Midwest tour with a string quartet later this year. The shows have a different vibe than a traditional Five for Fighting performance.

“A lot of things have changed,” he says. “Long gone are the days of the House of Blues rock shows. They’re theater, string quartet shows, which is fun for me and my audience.

“We haven’t been out in almost two years. I’m giddy and excited to play for audiences and to see everyone. I’m only starting with 12 dates. I have three more California shows in November, assuming things are open by then. I’m just grateful to play again.”

Ondrasik spent the pandemic writing new songs but supporting another cause as well — his family’s company, a business that manufactures shopping carts. It has 300 employees.

“It’s about as far away from the music business as the Andromeda galaxy is from Earth,” he says with a laugh. “My dad, being 82, had to quarantine. I was guiding the business through the pandemic and through economic challenges. It was a new challenge for me.

“With 300 employees, we had to think about their health and livelihoods. It was a new challenge for me. I didn’t do a lot of music during the pandemic. I didn’t realize how much I’d miss it. It’s good for my soul and what I do.”

large restaurant space near the corner of Main and Oak streets in downtown Ventura has seen occupants come and go the last few years. For a long while, it was Rookees — your basic sports bar with lots of TVs and several pool tables. Sometime in 2018, new owners took over and gave it a facelift. The pool tables were replaced with a stage and dance floor, a handsome new foyer was added, and the interior got a glow up with chic lounges, black bar stools and a refurbished bar. The food went up a notch in quality, too. And then it closed for a while, changed hands again, and reopened in early 2019 with a more diverse menu: “comfort food” standards like fish and chips and burgers, tapas and light bites for a more discerning palate, and a new list of craft cocktails.

The “new” Oak and Main was a hot live music venue, but didn’t seem to make much of an impression otherwise.

It closed a little over a year later, and then sat empty for most of the pandemic. It has a new owner once again, and takes its inspiration from a group of Prohibition-era California artists — Selden Connor Gile, August Gay, Maurice Logan, Louis Siegriest Bernard von Eichman, and William H. Clapp. — known as the Society of Six. Hence, the name: The Six Chow House.

The Six describes itself as a rustic American gastropub, and uses primarily recycled materials in its decor, which includes lots of wood planks, black leather, cast iron and very distinctive chandeliers made out of empty liquor bottles.

Not terribly original, but it’s a good look: cozy, comfortable, upscale but unpretentious.

We’d made reservations at 6 p.m. on a Sunday night, and that was a good thing: The place was packed! Local hot jazz outfit the Barrelhouse Wailers were performing — a perfect throwback band for this throwback joint — and the crowd definitely included several fans, many of whom came ready

to tear up the dance floor. But the clientele wasn’t all music lovers; some appeared to be folks grabbing a drink at the bar, tourists who wandered in off the street or locals like us, just curious about one of Ventura’s newer restaurants.

We were excited by the cocktail menu, which included a few standards but was mostly made up of intriguing combinations made with fruit-infused liquors and flavorful syrups.

Among the food options — pizza, burgers, steak, roast chicken and the like — were two unexpected choices: a Japanese noodle dish made with short rib and yakisoba, and a 32 oz. ribeye for a whopping $98. I suppose you could bring a few friends to help you polish off that two-pound steak.

My husband ordered The 6 Old Fashioned — not very special, but not a thing wrong with it, either, and the enormous ice cube used to chill it was a nice touch.

I ventured into unknown territory with the West Side: a marvelous little concoction served straight up in a coupe, garnished with a slice of dehydrated apple. It was made with gin infused with both turmeric and grilled apple, lending it a pale yellow hue and a subtle creamy texture. The hint of apple played against the spicy ginger syrup, with a bit of lift from fresh lemon. Simply wonderful and distinctly different from anything else I’ve had.

Foodwise, we took a tour of the menu: ceviche as an appetizer, a pepperoni and sausage pizza and a salmon salad entree. We found everything well prepared and delicious.

The ceviche was a true starter portion, i.e. not a very big pile; just the right amount to whet the appetite but not satisfy it. Chunks of halibut, mango and Serrano chiles were dressed with fresh lime and coconut milk. A little spicy, a little tart, just a hint of sweet, and a somewhat creamy texture from the coconut milk . . . a nice way to begin a meal for sure!

The salmon salad — actually a pan-seared salmon filet served with a side salad (not a complaint; merely an obser-

vation) — was out next. The fish was cooked medium rare and lightly seasoned. The salad was a lovely mix of greens, edamame, apple and mango in a light citrus vinaigrette. What really made it, however, were the curried cashews, which upped the flavor and texture considerably.

Our favorite part of the meal was probably the pizza, with its crisp crust, rich meats and caramelized onions. It wasn’t enormous, but two people could probably split this with another appetizer and be perfectly satisfied. We ended up taking a few slices home (to two grateful teenagers).

There always seems to be room for another gastropub and craft cocktail bar in these parts. Can The Six Chow House succeed where the former occupants failed? Hard to say at this stage of the game, but so far it seems to be playing a solid hand.

I recently met this guy, and we’ve spent the entire past week together. Unfortunately, he’s moving across the country — tomorrow. He asked whether I’d be open to dating after he moved. I panicked and said no — I’m really not looking for long-distance — but now that he’s leaving, I’m sad, and I’m worried I’ve made a mistake. Help!

— Confused Obstacles to love are like situational steroids. We long for what’s out of reach — and all the more romantic if reaching it takes crossing the desert on a camel or $553 with a layover in Boise.

The perception that something is in short supply or soon will be (say, because it’s about to move across the country) makes it seem more valuable to us. Psychologist Robert Cialdini calls this the “scarcity principle” and explains that the possibility we could lose access to something (or someone) jacks us into a motivational state: Go! Chase it! Don’t let it get away!

The scarcity principle is the psychological scheming behind ads like: “Today only!” and “Only one sofa at this price!” The looming scarcity (or “scarcity”) shuts down your Department of Reasoning, basically turning you into a dog chasing a couch-shaped squirrel. Only after you buy the thing and get it home (P.S. “no returns!”) do you notice an important fact: It will fit perfectly in your living room...if you take a sledgehammer to part of a wall and — “surprise!” — extend one end into your neighbor’s apartment.

Recognizing how scarcity primes us to see through loss-prevention-colored glasses, do your best to set aside “Eek! He’s leaving!” and objectively assess what you two have.

In short, is he (and how you are together) so extraordinary — so near-impossible to find locally — that the thousands of dollars in travel costs and other trade-offs of long-distance might be worth it? If so, just tell him you’d like to try long-distance and see how it goes.

Should you decide your feelings were more about the circumstances than the guy, well, you’re not alone. Impossible love brings out the drama queeny 14-year-old in many of us. (The OK sign is said to make the initials W.P. for “White Power.”) The man — who is Mexican American! — insisted he was doing nothing of the sort, but the utility fired him anyway. “To lose your dream job for playing with your fingers, that’s a hard pill to swallow,” he told NBC 7 San Diego.

Your boyfriend might never agree with your approach to online privacy. However, he might understand it — and gain a deeper understanding into who you are — if you evoke his empathy. Instead of simply telling him you “don’t like” to appear in social media posts, go into detail about your fears and discomfort at allowing an unselect audience a window into your life.
