Prepare your pets for evacuations

R

esidents of Ventura County know it’s not a matter of “if” but “when” the next fire burns in the county. While the wildfires currently scourging the western United States aren’t taking place locally, Ventura County Animal Services and the Humane Society Ventura County are asking residents to be ready by making sure they have plans and supplies in place for their pets to evacuate, and encouraging them to volunteer for evacuation training now.

“Now is the time to volunteer, we can’t train you during an emergency,” said Randy Freeman, marketing manager for Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS), which oversees the Emergency Volunteer Rescue Team (EVRT). EVRT is a volunteer-based program that is activated during all declared disaster events that may require large animal and livestock evacuations. EVRT

has a focus on evacuation and sheltering horses, but has also moved alpacas, sheep, goats, emus and donkeys.“The volunteers really are our unsung heroes in our emergency responses.”

There are currently about 40 to 50 active EVRT volunteers in the county who have completed the training program and are ready to be activated when needed.

Freeman encouraged those who want to help to volunteer now, and to not just start trying to evacuate animals during an emergency. EVRT volunteers are in close communication with incident command so they know which roads are open and safe to travel on, and which only allow authorized vehicles to pass. He said during recent events some people falsely claimed to be with EVRT in order to get through road closures; this just makes more work for law enforcement and puts more cars in areas where the public

The best volunteers for EVRT are people with three-horse trailers and those who have experience loading frightened horses, said Freeman.

The important skill of “know[ing] how to back up on a windy one-lane road” with a horse trailer can be very useful, too.

“Our biggest need is somebody who can really be that one person [to] go in there, get the animals and bring them to an evacuation point, usually at the Ventura County Fairgrounds,” said Freeman. “It’s important to mention that our services are really for people who don’t have transportation for their pets.”

The Humane Society of Ventura County offers tips for small animal owners to prepare for a fire or other natural disaster:

• Get pets microchipped and ensure up-to-date ID tags are attached to their collars.

• Plan with neighbors to help each other if one household is away during an evacuation.

• A go-bag for each animal should include: five days of food and water, medications and vet records, leash, collar, ID tag, harness and photos of you and your pet together. Don’t forget poop bags for dogs.

• Crates or pet carriers for each animal should be assembled and ready to use.

• Cat owners should have litter boxes and litter ready to go.

• Plan for an evacuation center not taking pets. Know local shelters, rescues, county facilities that will take your pets and understand their rules. Put contact info in your phone.

• Stay informed during the incident and have backup plans.

We spend time with [our horses], ride them, but don’t practice loading. If your horse or livestock is not used to being loaded, it can be more difficult when they are being evacuated, with smoke in the air, someone trying to pull

ast weekend, Sept. 11-13, the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District (VCAPCD) issued an Air Quality Alert due to the potential health impacts of wildfire smoke from fires burning across the state. On Sept. 14, VCAPCD extended the alert as offshore breezes in the evening were expected to push more smoke into the county.

The smoke lingering in Ventura County’s airshed is coming from fires to the north and south and is expected to continue.

“While most of the smoke has remained well above the surface, it has begun to mix down towards the surface in Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley and will likely do the same in other areas of the county,” stated the VCAPCD on their website on Sept. 13. The alert emphasized that “wildfire smoke concentrations can vary hour by hour and change frequently. Forecast AQI [Air Quality Index] colors are meant to be as representative as possible for the 24-hour day. At times, air quality is likely to be better or worse than is indicated for the full day.”

He said some horse owners seem to think that “fire will not come into their area. Fires happen in those interface areas, space between urban and rural. That is exactly where there are people who have livestock.”

HSVC also activates and deploys officers to assist in evacuation, placement and sheltering of animals during evacuations. Both EVRT and HSVC have been assisting animal owners since the 1985 Wheeler Fire, ignited by arson in Wheeler Canyon, northwest of Ojai.

“The HSVC was very busy sheltering animals during the Wheeler Fire of 1985,” said Jolene Hoffman, shelter director. “We had over 170 dogs, 150 cats and about 35 horses that we took in during the 15-day fire that burned around the Ojai Valley.” Last year, HSVC sheltered 284 animals and they are increasing capacity to shelter more animals.

“In every major incident in our county, we had dozens of EVRT members out there,” said Freeman. They are deployed from the shelter in Camarillo, and a special animal services officer Continued on Page 7

While air quality varies, the VCAPCD information stated that “Air quality should be considered unhealthy in areas directly impacted by smoke. If you are in an area directly impacted by smoke, please exercise extreme caution and avoid vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion.”

People with respiratory or heart disease issues, in particular, as well as children and the elderly, should remain indoors and out of the smoke-filled air.

Those with air conditioners should run the system with a clean filter and have it set to recirculate interior air only, closing any intakes for fresh air on units with that option. Doors and windows should be closed to reduce the amount of smoke inside.

Coastal clean-up day customized for COVID

or decades, the third Saturday in September has been designated “Coastal Cleanup Day.” Crowds of volunteers worked in teams at designated collection sites, gathering litter into bins at centralized spots. This year, the California Coastal Commission, which leads cleanup efforts in California, decentralized the event to allow social distancing.

The commission urges volunteers to mobilize from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday this month, focusing on neighborhood streets, local parks, local streams and rivers as well as the coast. Since litter washes downhill into storm drains and creeks, and from waterways out to the ocean, California Coastal Cleanup Day included inland cleanup sites years ago. This year, volunteers can participate in a solo cleanup or team up with their family or housemates.

As always, one of the goals of the annual California Coastal Cleanup is to collect data on the items collected.

Data collection will be accomplished this year through the free Clean Swell data collection app, available in English and Spanish. For those unable to download the app, paper data collection cards are available, in English or Spanish, through www.vccoastcleanup.org, which also has other guidelines and resources. Also, share your cleanup experiences on social media, using the hashtags #coastalcleanupday and #protectyourhappyplace.

The inauguration of this annual event was in 1986, when Linda Maraniss and Kathy O’Hara, working for the nonprofit Ocean Conservancy, organized 2,800 volunteers for an event in Texas. The Ocean Conservancy, together with nonprofit organizations and government entities in over 112 countries, grew the event into the annual International Coastal Cleanup Day, regularly organizing over half a million volunteers per year, according to the conservancy’s count at oceanconservancy.org Last year, on Sept. 19, over 3,795 volunteers in Ventura County collected 16,210 pounds of trash and 1,117 pounds of recyclables from 50 miles of local beaches and inland waterways as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day. Ventura County Coastal Cleanup coordinator Lara Meeker urges people who hike this month to bring a glove and a bag and collect litter for the cleanup. Some of Ventura County’s most prized nature areas, such as the Punch Bowls trail near Santa Paula and Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks, have been so affected by litter in recent months that they have been shut down. “They are there shoulder-to-shoulder with our dispatch . . . and sometimes we have an EVRT team at evacuation destinations.” The EVRT team conducts the intake of evacuated animals and provides security. Owners should know that their horses are “safe, secure and being taken care of.”

Owners can stay and care for their own horses, but sometimes during an emergency they have to rely on EVRT members.

EVRT also manages the intake of animals brought in by owners who are able to transport their horses but unable to shelter them elsewhere during the emergency.

Cortney Rasura, who lives in Ojai and hikes Ventura County trails at least once per week, stresses the importance of hikers joining the litter cleanup effort, especially this month. “If you hike, you may not realize it, but you could be part of the problem,” she explained. “For example, a few weeks ago, I ate a granola bar while hiking, and I put the wrapper in the outer pocket of my backpack.

Later, when I opened the pocket to get a Chapstick, the wrapper was gone. It must have fallen out. So I pick up litter that isn’t mine, and if I accidentally litter, I hope someone will help correct my mistake.”

Site captains like Kate Furlong, of the Ventura Land Trust, and others associated with the Surfrider Foundation, will stay focused on some of the traditional sites where past organized cleanup events have recovered the most trash. “After the hot Labor Day weekend, we had lots of trash left on our beaches,” noted Meeker, the Ventura County coordinator. “And sites like the Ventura River mouth are still affected by urban runoff and litter upstream, so we definitely still need volunteers down at the beaches. Until it’s safe to gather in large groups, we are going spread out, and we will clean up starting at our own front doors to focus on preventing litter in our own neighborhoods from washing down to the coast in the first place.”

Naya Rivera autopsy completed, son remembers cry for help

Supervisors to decide on Upper Ojai oil project

On Aug. 31, Vidal Fregoso of Camarillo was found guilty by a jury of a hate crime, attempted vandalism and attempted theft.

On Sept. 25, 2019, Fregoso and the victim, Luthere Swayne, a 72-year-old Black man, were aboard a private chartered fishing boat operated by a company out of Ventura County. Fregoso used “racial slurs” while physically threatening Swayne. Witnesses of the incident saw Fregoso attempt to take Swayne’s fishing pole and throw it overboard. The crew of the boat intervened and the men were kept apart until the boat returned to shore.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation and arrested Fregoso.

A sentencing hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 5, 2020. Fregoso faces up to one year in jail.

Glee actress Naya Rivera died as a result of accidental drowning, according to the final autopsy report of the Ventura County Medical Examiner. The investigation revealed that she called for help before sinking below the surface of Lake Piru on July 8, 2020.

Rivera and her 8-year-old son were spending the day on the lake in a rented boat. Rivera’s mother told investigators that the boy remembers jumping into the lake with his mother and then shortly after she told him to get back in the boat and helped him climb up.

He then heard her yell “help.” He remembers her arm reaching up out of the water before disappearing into the lake.

Testing revealed Rivera’s blood alcohol level of 0.016 and a low level of prescription medication used to treat anxiety.

Oxnard Union High School District serving meals during distance learning

Students at schools across the Oxnard area can get meals at no cost through two programs.

The Supper Program: All children ages 18 and younger can receive meals three times on service days. No documentation is required.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m. the Ventura County Board of Supervisors will hold a de novo hearing on a project that was first before the supervisors in 2016.

The Agnew Lease project at that time was for the drilling of three new oil wells and trucking of oil and waste water on Koenigstein Road in Upper Ojai. The split-vote approval of the project led to the county being sued by Climate First: Replacing Oil and Gas (CFROG), a local nonprofit watchdog organization. CFROG argued the project review failed to both properly apply the emission threshold of 5 pounds per day mandated by the Ojai Valley Area Plan (OVAP) and to consider cumulative air quality impacts on the Upper Ojai airshed.

In fact, the Ventura County Planning Department made an error early on in placing the project outside the area plan boundaries.

CFROG prevailed in court against the county, and the judge ordered a supplemental environmental impact review be conducted.

Carbon California Company LLC, the lease owner-operator, has revised the project, seeking to drill two new wells, which drops the emissions from new drilling to below the threshold of the OVAP. The staff report for the project will become available at 5 p.m. on Sept. 17 for the hearing on the following Tuesday. n a Sept. 1 ruling, Hon. Kevin DeNoce of the Ventura County Superior Court found in favor of several environmental organizations, allowing them to intervene in a legal action brought against Ventura County challenging the Habitat Connectivity and Wildlife Corridors Overlay Zone and a Critical Wildlife Passage Areas Overlay Zone and applicable ordinances passed by the Ventura County Supervisors in March 2019.

In June 2019, the Ventura County Coalition of Labor, Agriculture and Business (COLAB), a local nonprofit organization, and the California Construction and Industrial Materials Association, an advocacy group for industrial minerals and ready mixed concrete industries, filed legal action against the county for adopting the wildlife corridor overlay ordinances.

In the action filed, COLAB states that “many of the Ordinance’s regulations are legally flawed and scientifically unsupportable. Moreover, the Ordinance is fatally in conflict with the County’s General Plan.”

COLAB argues the county erred in finding the ordinances exempt from full review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), claiming it “ignored the command of [CEQA] to weigh and evaluate the project’s impacts across a broad spectrum of impact categories. By failing to conduct an environmental impact review, “the Ordinance likely will cause potentially significant environmental impacts, unintended consequences, and negative effects to property owners throughout the County.”

The Wildlife Corridor and Connectivity zones apply to 163,000 acres of land in Ventura and provide restrictions on lighting, fencing and building, as well as activities in certain riparian areas. The intention of the overlay is to provide increased connections between habitat for wildlife by linking the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills with the Los Padres National Forest. The new zoning rules mean development in those areas is subject to an additional layer of environmental review, which environmental organizations say is needed to protect several species of wildlife.

the community. We look forward to diligently defending them in court,” said Jeff Kuyper, executive director of Los Padres ForestWatch (LPFW). The local nonprofit organization was joined by the Center for Biological Diversity, National Parks Conservation Association and Defenders of Wildlife in seeking to intervene in the case.

COLAB argued against allowing the parties to intervene, saying they had no real interest because they do not represent property owners.

But DeNoce disagreed and in his ruling stated, “Applicants have shown an interest in this action...Applicants have shown that they have a direct conservation, recreation and aesthetic interest in the wildlife corridor.” The judge disagreed with each of COLAB’s objections and further defended the intervention by stating the county may not have a strong incentive to fully defend the ordinances.

“Here, the County must represent broad public interests, and balance those competing interests in making policy choices and pursuing projects such as the Ordinances at issue in these cases. It follows that the County may not be as motivated to act as a zealous advocate for the environmental considerations that originally led to the passage of the Ordinances.” He continues, “Applicants [for intervention], however, exist primarily for the purpose of advocating for wildlife and wildlife/ habitat conservation. It follows that Applicants have strong environmental interests that may not be adequately represented by the County.”

The intervenors are represented by the U.C. Irvine Environmental Law Clinic. The petitioners are represented by the firm of Jeffer Mangels Butler and Mitchell.

A case management conference in the cast is scheduled for Nov. 12, 2020.

he Ventura Music Festival presents innovative, genre-defying big band Little Phat Band, led by Grammy and Emmy Award-winning composer and pianist Gordon Goodwin. Goodwin and Co. grace the stage as part of the popular Concerts in Your Car series at the Ventura County Fairgrounds on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Goodwin’s musical diversity is partially influenced by his work on scores for numerous TV shows and blockbuster movies, including The Incredibles, Star Trek: Nemesis and Snakes on a Plane.

In addition to all that, he’s also a prolific arranger of sheet music that’s played and enjoyed by multitudes of jazz bands, from scholastic to professional levels.

It’s the second Concerts in Your Car event presented by the Ventura Music Festival. The venerable festival has been entertaining audiences with a mix of classical music and a variety of other genres since its founding in 1994.

Unfortunately, like other music festivals, organizers were forced to postpone this summer’s planned indoor concerts due to the pandemic, and invited all the scheduled artists back for next year.

Since the pandemic struck, festival organizers have stayed connected to patrons and fans with online concerts by artists who appeared in past years, as well as webinars about music history, and youth music activities.

VMF organizers were thrilled by the opportunity to finally present live shows again at the safe, fun, and impressive Ventura County Fairgrounds venue, featuring cars surrounding an elevated stage with high-tech lighting effects and large video screens.

VMF Artistic Director Nuvi Mehta says that VMF is fortunate to welcome the Little Phat Band to the stage, as he considers Goodwin to be among the greatest big band and jazz arrangers and composers of all time.

“It’s at a level for the 21st century, which totally eclipses the power of the bands of the days of the past.

Every generation of players gets better and better,” said Mehta. “It’s just ear popping. Some of the best musi-

cians in the world.”

VMF Executive Director Susan Scott says Goodwin’s commitment to nurturing new jazz talent compelled them to provide discounted tickets to local bands, along with the chance to win an Internet master class with Goodwin.

“All the student jazz bands know Gordon Goodwin.

They all play his compositions,” said Scott. “One of the teachers told me that as far as the students in jazz bands are concerned, Gordon Goodwin is a rock star.”

Goodwin says his band has hardly played at all since the shutdown of live entertainment months ago. He and his fellow band members are excited to reach fans again, even though it will be a new experience to play for audience members in cars.

“It’s going to be eventful for us. I think, accordingly, this audience is going to see a group of musicians that have six months’ worth of pent up energy,” said Goodwin. “I think that’s probably going to manifest itself in a pretty exciting and noteworthy occasion.”

Goodwin says that while Little Phat Band concerts are always exciting, he hopes to make this one extra entertaining to help people escape the troubling times we’re living through.

“Our intent at this gig is to make it more of a party. Our music is typically high energy as a rule anyway. We have a wide stylistic range from straight ahead jazz, to Latin, to funk, to standards like Duke Ellington. But we’re going to probably lean towards more of a party, and a celebration,” said Goodwin. “That’s going to help us reflect our gratitude that we’re back on stage again, and playing music for people who came there to hear it. That’s not something we should take for granted, and we don’t.”

uring the pandemic, we’re taking everything outside. Dining. Music. Movies. Haircuts. It’s only natural, then, that galleries and museums would do the same. Because while viewing pretty pictures online is a perfectly lovely way to consume art, there’s nothing quite like seeing the real thing, in real life, up close and personal.

Now through November, art lovers can enjoy recent works by Ventura County artists just by hitting the street or the trail. The Museum of Ventura County (MVC) and Ventura Botanical Gardens (VBG) have teamed up to offer a sculpture installation at both locations: on the path that winds through the hillsides behind Ventura City Hall, and in the museum plaza facing Main Street.

According to Denise Sindelar, MVC deputy director, bringing art into the gardens is a years-old idea.

“Barbara Brown, the former board president and current board member at VBG, has been instrumental in envisioning permanent art installations in the gardens,” explained Sindelar. “She served on the city of Ventura Public Art Commission when I was working for the city and had thought about how best to make this a reality. Years passed and the Thomas Fire took its toll, but the idea surfaced again in response to the museum’s extended closure and the garden’s ability to reopen this summer.”

Joseph Cahill, executive director of VBG, contacted Sindelar in May about an outdoor art collaboration, which was funded through the Bonita C. McFarland Art Endowment.

Creating an outdoor gallery

Rather than issuing a traditional call for submissions, Sindelar and Cahill formed a jury made up of local artists and art aficionados tasked with finding works with the right scope and scale for the project: Peter Tyas of Studio Channel Islands, Chris Beirne from Ojai Studio Artists, university professors Matthew Furmanski (California State University, Channel Islands) and Michael Pearce (California Lutheran University), VBG’s Brown and MVC’s Sindelar.

“There was a lot of work that came in for consideration,” Furmanski said. “The jurors reviewed work from the Buenaventura Art Association, Ojai [Studio] Artists and Studio 10 —

Channel Islands as well as many other artists both locally and from further afield.”

Most came from Ventura County, however.

“The logistics of moving artwork and installing it during COVID-19 was a consideration that all artists had to contend with,” Furmanski noted.

“There were about 50 artworks from 20 artists considered,” recalled Tyas. The executive director of Studio Channel Islands said that judging criteria included merit of the work, suitability for the location, scale, visual impact and challenges related to installation.

Speaking for himself, Furmanski said that he looked for pieces that fit the outdoor environments. “I was looking for a work that would either contrast or compliment the location in some way that would be intriguing to a viewer/ participant.” He did not, however, notice a common theme emerge. “If I did, it was simply the diversity of work that was brought together for the two spaces. A potpourri of styles and materials.”

According to Tyas, he saw “the connection of creativity with nature, natural processes and structures, personal narratives of space, light and form. The locations have a strong aesthetic and any work placed there would respond to the history, geography and community.”

Art at the gardens is currently near the visitors center and on the lower levels of the trail, and runs the gamut from literal (“The Hare” by Gloria Bradley) to lyrical (“Embrace” by Sudad Shahin) to lofty (the towering stone “Nuclear Family” by Paul Lindhard and Kevin Carman).

Then there’s the work of renowned conceptual artist and Pepperdine University professor emeritus Bob Privitt: a large, bright red metal base supporting a triangle framing a variety of geometric shapes. This piece is called “Fire Shrine,” and brings to mind the energy and chaos of licking flames.

Both the name and its installation on the hillside evoke the 2017 Thomas Fire — the “powerful memories” Tyas referred to — which devastated the botanical gardens. Interestingly, however, “Fire Shrine” predates that inferno by a few decades (one of those uncanny coincidences of life seemingly imitating art). Privitt has two sculptures in Arte Forastero; “Captured Semisphere” is installed in the MVC courtyard.

There’s both elegance and strength in these substantial works and an outdoor environment is the ideal way to showcase them (which Privitt noted was always the intention). This isn’t the first time that “Fire Shrine” has been seen locally (Vita Art Center exhibited it two years ago), but viewing it on the VBG hiking trail gives it an added element, enhancing its grace and majesty.

“Denise Sindelar had selected the space,” Privitt said. “That space is very nice, has a mountain/valley background from one angle, plus an ocean view from the opposite angle.”

Sindelar said that artists were involved in both site selection and installation, with assistance from MVC and VBG staff and volunteers.

But as with any art on view, even temporarily, in public spaces, there were factors to take into consideration. One large piece, “Vessel” by Amy Sharp, for example, had to be hauled into place with golf carts.

“Heavier works were placed on the museum plaza as well as the lower portions of the gardens and nursery,” she said. “We have other, lighter works planned for the upper pathways.”

In total, there are 13 works at VBG, with two more to be added soon.

of demonstrating how plastics [and other pollutants] are affecting life in the ocean,” said Akmakdjian, a graduate of CSUCI who studied under Furmanski. He encouraged her to submit her work to Arte Forastero. “Kelp forests, especially in Northern California, are crashing as a result of rising temperatures due to climate change and ocean acidification.”

Through her studies and volunteer work — she has a genuine love for marine biology — Akmakdjian has gotten to know many of the scientists studying climate change’s effect on the ocean environment. The base or holdfast of “Nereocystis” is made of concrete hands, some of which are cast from biologists she’s met working at Channel Islands National Park.

With this piece, she muses on the idea, “What if, one day, this is the only way to experience a kelp forest?” A sobering thought that, like the art, hangs in the air.

The Spanish word forastero translates to stranger, although its Latin root, foris, means outside. Arte Forastero seems to call on both these meanings: manmade works that are foreign to the natural world, sitting outside the walls of a gallery. Some might, indeed, be a little strange, but with their compelling compositions and careful placement, these works of art do come into harmony with the sky and landscape around them. Don’t be a stranger — come out and see for yourself.

he Galloping Hen has taken up the corner spot in the shopping center near Big Lots for as long as I have been in Ventura — back before there was a Big Lots, come to think

I ordered the bacon frittata with hash browns and a biscuit. It consisted of bacon, spinach, mushrooms and tomatoes cooked into a rough “pie” with beaten eggs and topped with cheese.

Quite generous — it was close to four inches in diameter and an inch thick — but very tasty. It benefited from some additional salt and pepper and a side of salsa (which the server was happy to bring me), but I was quite happy with my

of it, and predating BierBrats and Tomahawk Barbershop by years. Just a humble little place, open for breakfast and lunch, serving the usual fare. I ate there once or twice years ago, and it was decent if unspectacular. Charming in that country cafe kind of way (frilly yellow curtains in the windows and red and white checkered tablecloths), but never terribly busy.

Well, the Galloping Hen seems to have been getting herself in shape the last few years, because during a recent weekend morning I found the place all filled up, with numerous parties on the waiting list. It was too hot to stand in line so I came back on a weekday morning (early) with my husband to see what the fuss was all about.

The first thing one might notice is that the restaurant has made good use of its outdoor spaces. It doesn’t spill into the parking lot, but there’s a small side patio and tables have been set up on the sidewalk. Seating areas are decently spaced, and — even better — plastic screens separate all of them. I felt very comfortable dining here.

Our waiter quickly brought us our menus, which looked freshly laminated — and I wondered if the proprietors took advantage of the COVID-19 slowdown to revamp things. It’s exactly what you’d expect from a simple cafe — omelets, scrambles, pancakes and French toast for breakfast; sandwiches and burgers for lunch — but there were a lot of options. I’m a 54-year-old woman, married for 21 years to a pretty decent guy. When our now-18-year-old son was little, my husband completely ignored Mother’s Day for maybe six years. Once, I asked him why, and he simply said, “You aren’t my mother.” It hurt me SO MUCH because I busted my butt to be a good mom. I told him why I was so upset, and one year, I laid on our bed and cried, but nothing changed. Six years ago, he began giving me a card and flowers on Mother’s Day. This year, he and our son got me hanging flower baskets, which was wonderful. The problem is I can’t get over his doing nothing in the past, and it’s

The problem between you started with an error in mind-reading.

“Mind-reading” sounds like a Vegas magic act, but it’s a mental ability we all have (though it’s actually mind-predicting rather than -reading).

Psychologists call this “theory of mind,” referring to our ability to do reasonably well at guessing (“theorizing” about!) the “mental states” of others, meaning the emotions they’re experiencing, their beliefs, their desires, and their intentions.

I give an example of theory of mind in action in “Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck”: “When you see a man looking deep into a woman’s eyes, smiling tenderly and then getting down on one knee, your understanding and experience of what this usually means helps you guess that he’s about to ask ‘Will you marry me?’ and not ‘Would you mind lending me a pen?’”

Unfortunately, we often do pretty poorly at the everyday swami thing because we tend “to imagine that other minds are much like our own,” observes anthropologist Donald Symons. Making matters worse, we tend to assume others’ minds should work like our own. So, if something isn’t important to us, we assume it isn’t (and shouldn’t be) important to someone else.

Your husband’s view of Mother’s Day — unimportant and only applicable to one’s own mother — led him to conclude it should be unimportant to you and to sneer, “You aren’t my mother!”

This sort of assumption leads to strife and maybe even divorce through the resentment that builds when one partner consistently doesn’t get their needs met (and gets them mocked, to boot).

Happier, lasting relationships are fostered through a different approach: loving acceptance of the crazy. Even when you think your partner’s desire is irrational or unbecoming of someone with an IQ surpassing that of a root vegetable, if you won’t lose a limb, part company with your ethics, or otherwise seriously put yourself out, why not give them what they want? Again, you don’t have to find it reasonable; you do

it because it would make them happy.

Though your husband’s now coming around on Mother’s Day, I would bet my last bra strap he doesn’t care in the slightest about Father’s Day and still might not get why Mother’s Day means so much to you. But you cried and cried, and he eventually got that it was hugely important to you (perhaps through your son’s influence), and he’s come around — this year with the hanging flowers of Babylon. That’s awesome.

However, you have yet to update your idea of him as mean and selfish, perhaps because, like many people, you see forgiveness as a feeling and wait for it to strike you, lightning on the golf course -style. In fact, forgiveness is a set of actions you choose to take. Evolutionary social psychologist Michael McCullough explains that forgiveness involves deciding to set aside a grievance against a person, expressed in your “thoughts, emotions, and/or behaviors,” in order to have a continuing relationship with them.

Consider that your husband, though “pretty decent,” might have some continuing limitations in understanding and accepting what you need (even when you tell him). A mediator with a relationships focus would be helpful in

facilitating understanding and empathy between you, maybe in a single session. (Find one at Mediate.com.)

If mediation isn’t an option, there’s still a DIY approach: Explain the science on theory of mind and the notion of doing things simply to make your partner happy (even if you find their desires a bit crackers). This might help your husband be more motivated to come around in ways you need, showing you he’s making an effort, best he can. This, in turn, could help you break with the past and the resentful feelings that went with — releasing them into the wild like Sea World’s orcas into the ocean: “Bye, Shamu!

Bye, Bruce! Bye, Carla!”
