NEWS “Sustained community pressure” State tells SoCalGas to halt compressor project

n response to months of community pressure including marches, rallies and public comment at hearings, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) issued a directive to Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) to halt the process that is underway to expand it’s natural gas/methane compression facility located on North Olive Street in West Ventura.

The directive was dated Aug. 5, which SoCalGas acknowledged and agreed to. A follow up letter, dated Aug. 20 and signed by Rachel Peterson, executive director of the CPUC, states, “While SoCalGas is performing more detailed feasibility analysis of alternative sites and configurations, the CPUC requests that SoCalGas halt further planning and procurement for the Ventura Compressor Station modernization project.”

SoCalGas agreed to what the CPUC asked for. The CPUC is the state regulatory agency responsible for overseeing the activities of SoCalGas and other public utilities in the state, particularly related to cost of services, which is affected by utility infrastructure projects.

Peterson’s letter further states, “Until SoCalGas completes all additional review that SoCalGas has committed to do . . . it would be premature to commit to costly purchases.”

The August CPUC letters come on the heels of several months of community action and demands for environmental review, shutting the facility all together or relocating it. Residents and activists cite air quality impacts to the West Ventura neighborhood, danger from potential explosions along with climate change and state goals of decarbonization of homes and buildings as well as transitioning away from fossil fuel-based energy sources.

Public forum

On Aug. 21 California State Senator Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara) and State Assemblymember Steve Bennett (D-Ventura) hosted a hybrid (in person and virtual) town hall meeting regarding the gas compressor site and what Limón called a “gap” in legislation that does not require that a full Environmental Impact Report (EIR) be completed during this kind of project.

The in-person portion of the meeting was held at De Anza DATA Middle School in West Ventura.

Another issue called out is that the public is informed late in the process, even though the CPUC and SoCalGas say public input is key. The way the process is implemented does not require local public hearings or strong notification efforts. Community members pointed to the fact that the project was in fact approved by the CPUC in 2019 as part of a rate-setting process that only included three paragraphs, with a few pages of attachments — effectively burying the project amidst other projects across the state.

“As a parent I am tired of SoCalGas’s lack of transparency and sneaky practices,” said Jorge Rios, a parent of children who attend E.P Foster Elementary School, during the public comment portion of the meeting. “I’ve wondered about why there are so many cases of asthma in our kids, now I know why . . .

SoCalGas sees our community as expendable. I don’t want to see what happened to Porter Ranch [happen here].” He said SoCalGas is “maximizing profits at the expense of our lives.”

Limón reported that her and Bennett’s offices became “aware of this issue in April” of this year and began “engaging” with the relevant state agencies. She understood that many in the public “look to us to lead on conversations” about projects like this, but she cited the “separation of powers” in state government, saying, “We can’t tell agencies what to do.” But, as a legislator, they can move to change laws when they see a need.

During the meeting, Peterson, speaking for the CPUC, explained the role of the agency as defined by state law. “Our regular attention flows” from aspects of tracking customer use or metering, billing and “fairness” as well as “monitoring the gas procurement market.” The CPUC is also “in charge of regulating the proposals and cost of infrastructure . . . maintenance and . . . operations of natural gas systems.” This, said Peterson, is where the North Olive facility comes under the purview of the CPUC. Peterson said SoCalGas brought the project forward as part of a proposed budget within the “General Rate Case” process. Generally that process has a four-year time horizon and is reviewed by an administrative law judge. “It must be voted on” by the five CPUC commissioners before being placed in the budgeting process. She emphasized that all projects that receive “funding approval” by the CPUC must obtain all “relevant local permits . . . and be accountable and responsive to the local community.” Ths project was proposed to the CPUC in 2017, and was approved for fund-

ing in September 2019.

She said the Aug. 5 letter to SoCalGas was sent in response to what the CPUC was hearing “from the community,” and that it “instructed” the company to take several steps including “review[ing] alternative engineering solutions” like “electric compressors and alternative locations.”

The CPUC also has to consider demand for natural gas when reviewing these types of projects.

Peterson said demand for natural gas/methane in the areas served by this compressor site in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties is “expected to decrease over the long term.” She referred to programs and efforts at decarbonization and the incentivising of building and using all electric buildings and appliances, and that the CPUC is “working to be a part of and to manage” the “overall energy transition” away from fossil fuel-based energy sources “to ensure that what we do is consistent with California’s overall goals.”

In her view, by way of the August letters, SoCalGas has been “ordered to halt any further planning and procurement” related to this project until the company completes additional review. In addition, SoCalGas must hold a public hearing to report on the results of that analysis, when it is completed.

But some think the review and analysis of alternative locations and electric compressors should be conducted by an objective third party.

“The fact that it took so long . . . underscores serious shortcomings,” said Matt Vespa, an attorney with EarthJustice who is working with the Westside Clean Air Coalition.

He was referring to the process of reviewing these types of projects and said it shouldn’t have to require “so much sustained community pressure” before the CPUC steps in on a project. He also said the General Rate Case process is flawed and should not be the way all utility expenses are reviewed, as it doesn’t create enough avenues for “much scrutiny” either by the public or the commissioners themselves.

Vespa pointed out that SoCalGas itself states that public outreach on this project didn’t begin until 2019. The project was submitted in 2017. He said this is a deliberate strategy employed by SoCalGas to get “as far as they can” along on a project and “get authorization from state agencies” as a tactic to “minimize opposition” and gain “project momentum.”

Projects managed in this way will almost never fail because they are already approved by the time the public is aware of the scope and impacts.

He called it “troubling” that the descriptions and project information presented in 2017 to the CPUC contained “no indication that this project was in a disadvantaged community, next to a school, next to a boys and girls club.” This meant neither the commissioners nor the public at large understood the true and accurate potential effects of the project.

Vespa also pointed out the fact that this is a project expansion at “time of declining gas demand.” The obvious way to decrease impacts is to “decrease the size of the facility,” not expand it.

He underscored the assumption that all analysis has been so far based on, which is that the com-

pressors would be rebuilt at that site when, in fact, the compressors can be built anywhere along the pipeline route.

Vespa also said the review the CPUC is now requiring of SoCalGas is a good first step, but that it really should be an “independent review” of the scale, location and design, and that a process allowing for public input along the way is required. He reminded the officials that this is exactly what the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) is for. He called for the state to be the lead agency.

Several Ventura City Council members including Mayor Sofia Rubalcava and Councilmembers Doug Halter and Jeannette Palacios-Sanchez also spoke at the meeting, asking why an EIR has not been conducted and stating that the facility should not be located at its current site.

Denise Wise, director of the Ventura Housing Authority, which manages a few hundred affordable housing properties in the area near the gas compressor site, called the actions of SoCalGas “tone deaf” and cited “environmental justice.”

Officials with the Ventura Unified School District and Ventura County Office of Education also decried the lack of action on the part of SoCalGas to protect children and called on the company to relocate the facility.

Dr. Roger Rice, superintendent with the VUSD, stated, “relocating the facility is the only acceptable resolution and it’s the right thing to do for the community.”

Report main line water leaks — because every minute matters

an someone be regarded as a hero if they are just doing their job? Is someone heroic if their essential job puts their safety at risk, but the danger is posed by the potential for an industrial accident, rather than from being shot by a bad guy or burned by a fire?

Workers who respond to main line water breaks are heroic because water shoots out of these pipes at up to 10,000 gallons per minute, threatening anyone or anything nearby with submersion or ground collapse.

As water from a line break is wasted at rates unimaginable to anyone who has seen no flow faster than what can fit through a sink faucet, these 24/7 on-call workers respond to phone calls, sometimes in the middle of the night. They rush to sites, run towards danger, and jump into muddy ditches, sometimes digging in the wet and cold for hours before a pipe can be isolated, shut off and repaired.

Recently, Ventura County Water and Sanitation workers Joe Valdivia, Evan Martinez, Jairo Menjvar, Sam Gonzalez, Mark Sepulveda, Raul Ruiz, Ed Garcia, Tim Brown, Michael Flores, Fausto Esqueda and Joseph Ortega received a Ventura County Public Works “Challenge Coin” award for their response to one particularly difficult main line break.

Their challenge started on June 16, when an electronic monitoring system reported large pressure differences in adjacent portions of water line. Both the water superintendent and water distribution supervisor were on vacation, but

Valdivia took the lead, sending three teams to investigate. One team, consisting of Martinez, Menjivar, Gonzalez and Sepulveda found the cause. A 10-inch water pipe was broken under an orchard, spewing thousands of gallons per minute. Water had already engulfed construction equipment and was on the verge of flooding an adjacent house before workers stopped the flow and pumped out the pit.

This leak was caused by a contractor who had been operating an excavator without following the Dig Alert process, hit a pipe, and did not report the problem. The contractor reimbursed the county for expenses and water losses, but main line breaks are unfortunately common. For example, the city of Ventura responds to over 20 such breaks per year, according to Stephen Glenn, Environmental Services Specialist.

Quick crew responses save lives, property and water while avoiding disruption of daily life.

For example, Andy Flores and Dale Reynolds, of the Camarillo Water Division, recently detected, isolated, shut off and fixed a main line break at the Camarillo Outlet Center in the middle of the day without requiring the shut-down of any businesses.

In addition to detection through pressure monitoring, the city of Thousand Oaks uses Leak Loggers, an acoustic technology. With receptors on metal pipes, monitoring staff can “hear” water escaping. It would be too expensive to monitor the city’s entire 232 miles of main line all the time, so two workers

spend one hour per day moving 12 detectors, cycling through the city’s entire system every three years.

Even with this technology, repair crews are alerted to most leaks through phone calls. If you see an unexplained puddle, especially one growing from a source underneath the surface, call your water purveyor.

Some cities, such as Ventura and Thousand Oaks, have “zero tolerance” standards for runoff, so even if a puddle turns out to be from a source other than a broken line, reporting it can still result in water savings when inspectors follow up.

Service line breaks are far more common than main line breaks.

Service lines — running from main lines to meters — are most vulnerable at the point where they connect to meters. This type of break is usually a steady drip, rather than a gush, so residents should occasionally check their meter box for flooding. To check for leaks on your own side of the meter, turn off all the water in the house and check the meter to ensure it is not registering flow.

The number to call to report leaks depends on the water purveyor in the area. Contact the phone number on your water bill, and notice if the purveyor has a different number outside normal business hours. Delay in activating local heroic crews can waste water and endanger lives.

County indoor mask mandate VCPH aims to halt COVID increase

n Friday, Aug. 20, Ventura County Public Health (VCPH) issued a new health order that requires every person — whether they are vaccinated or not — to cover their nose and mouth when inside places with other members of the public. The order took effect that night and set Monday, Aug. 23, as the compliance deadline for businesses and public offices.

The order will be in effect through Sept. 19, 2021, or until it is otherwise modified.

“I hope that this order will increase mask usage in Ventura County. I expect that this will have a beneficial effect on the increase in COVID-19 infections we are seeing,” said Dr. Robert Levin, public health Officer with VCPH, citing a 40% increase in the number of cases of COVID-19. As of last week the county was seeing 28 cases per 100,000 people over one day, with a testing positivity rate of 7.7%.

Levin said wearing a mask indoors “must again become a normal practice for all, regardless of vaccination status.”

VCPH stated that the purpose of the new mandate is to “reduce community transmission” in the wake of “substantial levels of increased community transmission, especially among unvaccinated people.” According to the organization, the Delta variant of the virus, which transmits more quickly and easily between people than other strains of the virus, is causing the spike in cases.

The county health order noted that “recent information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also indicates that even fully vaccinated individuals can in

some cases spread the Delta variant to others, and so indoor use of face coverings provides an important added layer of protection.”

The new masking order requires that a cover is worn on the face over the mouth and nose “in all indoor public settings, venues, gatherings, and workplaces, including but not limited to offices, retail stores, restaurants and bars, theaters, family entertainment centers, conference and event centers, and government offices serving the public.”

County seeing increase in cases

On Aug. 20 the county reported 598 new cases and three additional deaths, three women aged 76, 87 and 98.

On Monday, Aug. 23, the county reported an additional 701 cases over the previous three days along with a notable increase in the number of people being hospitalized as a result of symptoms from COVID-19. On Aug. 23, 158 were being cared for in hospitals, with 37 people requiring ICU care. Four additional deaths of those testing positive for COVID were reported; those people ranged in age from 63 to 81.

As of Aug. 23, 67.4% of the county’s population aged 12 or over are fully vaccinated.

Levin emphasized that vaccination “significantly reduces the risk of infection,” and in the small percentage of vaccinated people who do get sick from the coronavirus, the vaccine “reduces the risk of hospitalization and death.” www.venturacountyrecovers.org.

T

he world’s largest cornhole tournament returns to Ventura this weekend, and it’s bigger and better than ever!

More than 2,000 players from across California, the United States and Canada, plus some teams from England as well, have signed up to compete in the Throw Down, which takes place Aug. 27-29 at Surfer’s Point Live at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. And it’s not all about size: This year, there’s more than $200,000 dollars on the line, making the Throw Down one of the most lucrative cornhole competitions as well. Live music on Friday and Saturday, food, craft beer, vendors and more will add to the festive atmosphere.

If you build it, they will come

It’s a far cry from the tournament’s humble origins as a simple activity at the Annual Summer Block Party put on by Spencer Makenzie’s Fish Company. The casual seafood joint, located at the corner of Ash Street and Thompson Boulevard in downtown Ventura, has been a local’s favorite for years, particularly for its award-winning fish tacos. Every summer, owner John Karayan would take over a section of the neighborhood to host a community-wide event with live bands, food and more.

“The first year we had music and we blocked the whole street off,” explained Karayan. He found, however, that often people would come listen to a band or two and leave afterward. “I felt we needed more activity to engage people.”

Karayan recalled the days of his youth in the 1990s, when he and his friends would hang out at Lake Nacimiento in San Luis Obispo County.

“We’d drink beer and play cornhole all day,” he remembered fondly. Tossing bean bags into holes cut into raised boards struck him as the perfect, low-key activity that could appeal to people of all ages and abilities, and keep attendees at the party.

When Karayan first introduced cornhole, in 2010, the initial “tournament” consisted of 32 two-person teams competing for a grand prize of $100. It was a smash hit, so Karayan continued to offer it, with more teams and bigger prizes every year.

David Garcia, senior graphic designer of Dodos Design in Santa Paula, handled marketing and advertising for Spencer Makenzie’s, and began helping out with the tournament in 2012.

“It was just a marketing thing,” Garcia recalled. “We set a couple of courts up. Not a lot of teams. It was fairly easy and fun . . . not really so competitive.”

Cornhole became a beloved feature of the block party, and then really took off in 2013. That year, in an effort to attract more and better players, Karayan upped the ante with $3,000 in prize money, including a $1,000 grand prize. Suddenly, professional cornhole teams — particularly from Nevada and Arizona — took an interest.

“A team from Arizona came out and won the money,” Karayan said. “The word spread in the tournament community.”

Entering the big leagues

At the time, cornhole wasn’t particularly popular on the West Coast — it was more of an East Coast and Midwest thing. But a

few things attracted professionals to what would become known as the Throw Down.

“Our event was unique,” Karayan said. “It wasn’t just cornhole; it was a party. People came with their families as a vacation . . . Who wouldn’t want to come to a California beach town?”

Whereas other professional tournaments usually offer cornhole and nothing else, often with boards set up in a nondescript location (“There’s no energy,” Karayan clarified), the Throw Down was, and is, a full weekend of entertainment for the whole family. Food, music, vendors, an appreciative audience, amateurs of all ages having the opportunity to toss a bag — tons of fun for everyone.

In addition, Garcia explained that, “We are the only tournament that gives a 100% payout. We are definitely a tournament for the players.”

By 2014, the Ventura competition was on the map. The Throw Down offered substantial prizes with full payout, and lots of energy and activity to go with them. Professional players from across the United States began signing up — the event would usually sell out in less than an hour — and attendance grew.

“We were way over our heads on it,” Garcia said, noting that game rules, logistics and other details for running a professional-level tournament were a bit of a mystery to them. So, Karayan called on the California Cornhole Association (CCA) for assistance.

“They jumped on board to help us run the tournament,” Garcia said.

Today, the Throw Down is considered the biggest cornhole tournament in the world, and there’s no other event like it that combines the sport with so much festivity and flair. Even in

2020, when the pandemic canceled in-person events, Karayan and his team still found a way to keep the tradition going.

“We held a Tournament of Champions,” Garcia explained.

“We invited the first and second place winners — just the players — from the past 10 years to play.”

There were no spectators, of course, but a grand time was had by all, with the first-place team taking home $10,000.

“It’s for everybody”

“Anybody can play anybody,” he said. “Backyard players can advance . . . Everybody has a chance to win money.”

“I’ve learned that even though it’s super competitive,” Garcia added, “professional players enjoy playing alongside amateur players. There are no egos. When we’ve talked to players afterwards about what they like about playing in Ventura, they always say, ‘We get to play everybody! It’s one big family.’ We have kids . . . we have men and women of all ages, the elderly.

It’s for everybody.”

Even if you’re not playing in the tourney proper, there will still be opportunities to throw it down. A women’s doubles tournament takes place on Friday evening ($1,000 grand prize), and there will

be free-of-charge Blind Draw Courts open to everyone all three days, with smaller cash payouts of $10 to $40 and prizes like professional-quality cornhole bags, paddleboards and sunglasses.

Finally, if all you want to do is have some low-stakes fun, practice sessions and free game play to test the equipment will be available.

Admittance to the event is $10, $20 for a three-day pass. Children 12 and under are free.

Players near and far hope to take first in the Throw Down

I

t’s the largest cornhole tournament in the world, with over 2,000 players and the highest payout. But according to one Santa Paula resident, whose two-person team has so far been the only Ventura County-based team to ever win the big cash payout at the Throw Down, locals have a key advantage.

“We play outdoors all the time, the pros do not . . . if it’s too windy or too hot, if the conditions aren’t perfect . . . that is an advantage for us . . . bring it,” said Jesse Segovia, who has lived in Santa Paula for 17 years. He won the grand prize at the Throw Down in 2017 with his teammate, Garrett Beckman, and has placed on the podium every year since.

As for what this coming weekend looks like in terms of his chances for winning, Segovia thinks that locals have a clear advantage with the weather. He does admit, however, that, “you know, it’s hard to say. If it’s your day to win, you’re gonna win.

My number one goal is the number one spot, as always.”

Cornhole was bigger on the East Coast and in the Midwest long before the Throw Down helped popularize it in California.

The first few years, teams from out of state usually took home the top prize. That all changed in 2017, when Segovia and Beckman “were the first Ventura County residents to win [the tournament]. That was a big deal for everyone in the county. After that I was hooked on the game.”

“It’s a growing women’s sport”

Segovia has made one key change for 2021.

“Garrett unfortunately hasn’t played in a few years. He got married and had kids, so he’s busy,” said Segovia, laughing.

Thus, this year he’s teaming up with Camille Yanez of Ventura.

In preparation for the Throw Down, the two have been playing at a variety of other tournaments. They hope that they will be taking the top podium spot come the finale on Sunday, Aug. 29.

Yanez grew up in the Santa Clara Valley and has now lived in Ventura for 14 years. She’s been playing cornhole for about eight years and got into the sport playing with her daughter’s coach in the parking lot between softball games.

“It was just one of those games . . . And I love it . . . And it just grew.”

She’s played mostly locally in Santa Paula and Ventura.

The number of women in the sport is growing along with the general popularity.

“What’s nice about this tournament is that it’s one of the largest women’s tournaments,” Yanez said. “There are 64 teams of women playing Friday night. Which is huge . . . I see more and more [women] at every tournament.”

“It’s a growing women’s sport, and here’s a fun fact: My husband plays in the tournament, too, but we can’t be partners — we are too competitive and it would be a divided household.”

She’ll be playing with Jesse Segovia on Saturday, and on Friday she’s playing in the women’s tournament with Donna Vonch from Indiana.

“Her husband is a senior pro-player, he’s been on ESPN. [Donna] is one of the top women players,” said Yanez, noting that John Karayan, owner of Spencer Mackenzie’s and founder of the Throw Down, connected her with Vonch. “I have this opportunity to play with her, I’m excited.”

She’s also excited to see cornhole grow in her hometown.

Yanez said she’s looking forward to the tournament, and seeing so many people participating.

“Everybody loves Ventura. You can’t get better weather . . . and we’ll be right by the beach . . . I’ll leave this weekend meeting more people than I knew and make more friends in the cornhole world.”

Segovia and Yanez will have some fierce competition from Matt Guy of Cincinnati. Frequently referred to as the “King of Cornhole” or the “Babe Ruth of Cornhole,“ it is said (according to American Cornhole lore) that Guy is . . well, the guy who made the sport of cornhole mainstream. Guy will be attending the Throw Down this year for the first time. Other players to keep an eye on are Jordan Cambra and Jason Baldwin, the defending tournament champions who are coming off a big win at the American Cornhole League World Championships in South Carolina three weeks ago.

Herrera has played cornhole since 2005 when he started playing on his nephew’s boards. “When we used to get together, we’d bring them out. I didn’t know what this game was about, but I wanted to learn about it. Then we figured out it was actually a game.”

Two and a half years later, he started playing in competitions, traveling out of state. “It was 2010 when I noticed and thought, oh man, there’s a lot of competition. It’s not just a backyard game.”

He shared that his game has been less than stellar recently.

“I’ve been struggling a little bit for the past two years or so.

I’m trying to get back my game.” He said when he was at his peak, he was winning 90% of the time. “We have ups and downs. It’s been a struggle with a lot more competition. This weekend is not going to get any easier. It’s going to be the toughest tournament I’ve ever played in; it’s not going to be just a walk in the park” To prepare for a competition of this level, Hererra said he does “prepare a little bit mentally. I’m going to be out there and it’s going to be tough. I go out there and try my best to win the tournament.” He practiced twice a week to continue to sharpen his game.

Herrera agrees that the locals in Ventura have an advantage due to the weather.

“Most of the year [players in the Midwest] have just been playing inside. I do practice outside. Here in the Midwest it gets so sticky, it’s so muggy . . . The boards are gonna be fast . . . as the sun goes down the boards get sticky.”

Herrera will be playing with his team mate of six years, Ryan Windsor, from Cuba, Illinois. The first two years they came to Ventura, they won it. In subsequent years they failed to reach the top spot, but came back to the invitation-only Tournament of Champions in 2020 for the win.

Naturally, Herrera hopes to win this year, but he is also happy “to see my old friends back in Ventura. It’s gonna be a great weekend.”

“It’s anybody’s game”

The game to the uninitiated may look like just tossing a bag into a hole. But there is a little more to it than that.

“There’s a strategic part and there are defensive plays,” Yanez explained. “Blocking the hole so [your opponent’s bags] don’t go in the hole. You block the hole so they have to go over the top.” She admitted that it may not be “extremely difficult, but if you don’t put in the time and practice, then you’re not consistent.” She emphasized that “there are players out there that can put that bag in the hole every single time.”

There are also different types of bags, with a slippery side and a sticky side.

“I don’t really have a particular strategy. But I always throw the slippery side,” she continued. “I’ve been told it’s harder to control, it can slide off the board.”

The weather impacts the boards, too: “They are fast in the morning and start getting stickier because of the weather.”

Typically, top-level cornhole players start out playing with friends or family. They find that they like it and have a knack for it, and play more to develop their skills and strategy. “Activism gets inspired” Ventura Land Trust hosts Wild and Scenic Film Festival

rt can move us and inspire us. Film as a medium can be particularly powerful in reaching a broad audience and inspiring people to act. That is the goal of this year’s 12th Annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival, hosted by the Ventura Land Trust and aimed at inspiring local residents to get out and get connected to natural landscapes around them.

“Where activism gets inspired” is the tagline for the event that includes about one and a half hours of films.

“Some are really short shorts, some medium-length-type films. All with an outdoor environment focus and a call to action to help preserve nature and celebrate nature on our planet,” said Melissa Baffa, executive director with Ventura Land Trust (VLT). She said about 500 to 600 people are expected to attend the outdoor event, about half of their typical attendance prior to the pandemic.

Festival goers who have attended before can expect the same great festival experience, with food and drink vendors, including five local breweries. The venue for the event is the grassy field area outside the Ventura County Credit Union headquarters.

Tickets run $5 to $125, and VIP tickets are available. There is free parking onsite.

Festival goers may bring lawn chairs and blankets, and are encouraged to wear layers as the temperature cools in the evening.

“We want to particularly make sure that everyone knows this is an outdoor event with plenty of space for people to spread out and socially distance,” said Baffa. Staff and volunteers will be required to wear masks,

and are “encouraging all festival goers to be masked.” She noted a small indoor area in the VIP section where those passing through will “need to be masked,” as it’s an indoor space.

The event includes a raffle, live music from local band Nautical Thrust, booths from local environmental organizations plus an area for fun and games, making the event family friendly.

Local hair metal tribute band Mandex to open cornhole tournament

ressed in ’80s-themed clothing, wigs, makeup and spandex while covering bands like Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, Skid Row, Quiet Riot and more, Mandex has remained a local fan favorite. The Ventura County-based tribute band has opened for Spencer Makenzie’s The Throw Down Cornhole Tournament for years now and will do so again this year.

With AJ Deez on lead vocals, Lizzy Licks on guitar and backing vocals, Willi Love on bass and backing vocals, Loosey Bucey on keyboard and backing vocals, and Ryder Right on drums, the hair metal tribute band has been an

The band, which started as just a group of friends in Ventura, has been playing venues across California for over 15 years now. While the idea of writing original music as Mandex has always been on the minds of the members, they’ve decided to remain as a tribute band to continue playing music from their favorite acts from the 1970s and 1980s, accurately and faithfully performing these songs and bringing them to life in front of audiences all around California.

The group thrives on live performance and loves the energy of the crowd. Over the years, the band has bonded musically and grown to understand each member’s style. Even when improvising, their energy comes together naturally.

Bassist Willi Love mentioned the feeling of performing on stage with friends and connecting with strangers through song. “These are songs we have connected with our entire lives from our favorite bands. It feels good to share this energy and this show, especially with younger generations who can see and relate to it. It’s important to us that we portray these songs in ways that honor those groups.”

The other big highlight of the festival is the silent auction, always full of wonderful items, vacations and the like. First and foremost, the Thousand Oaks Rotary Wine and Beer Festival is a fundraiser for the Ventura County Special Olympics, and in its 20-year history has raised more than $500,000 for the local organization. “These people want to participate,” Feigen emphasized.

New to the festival this year is a live band. The Nocturnes pay tribute to the music of the 1960s70s, particularly California surf music. They’ll be playing favorites from the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, The Righteous Brothers and other classic acts of the era. In that same spirit, Feigen said that festival organizers are encouraging attendees (around 300 people are expected) to wear “Hawaiian Beach Boys attire.”

During quarantine, my boyfriend started spending two or three hours a night playing video games. Not only do I think this is unhealthy (since video games apparently lead to violence and psychological problems), but I think gaming has become a coping mechanism/ escape tool for him. How can I get him to stop?

— Annoyed Claiming gaming causes violence is like claiming white wine causes stabbings. (Give somebody a sip of Chardonnay and before you know it, they’ll be dealing meth and then arrested, convicted, and shanking somebody in prison.)

There’s been a lot of “moral panic” over video gaming. A moral panic is a mass overreaction to some behavior, art form, or group of people, driven by the fear that it poses a threat to society’s values and the social order. Examples include rock lyrics said to be corrupting teenagers and the belief in the 1980s that satanic cults were running nursery schools.

About the latter, Margaret Talbot explained in The New York Times Magazine that day care worker/“Devil-worshippers” were supposedly “raping and sodomizing children, practicing ritual sacrifice, shedding their clothes, drinking blood and eating feces, all unnoticed by parents, neighbors and the authorities.”

It’s easy to succumb to a moral panic.

Though we like to see ourselves as careful, rational thinkers, when we’re afraid, we engage in reasoning that’s better described as “emotioning.” This makes us prone to believe “if it bleeds, it leads” news stories that report “research says” video games are addictive, lead to social isolation, and cause those who play them to become violent or more violent.

These media reports aren’t lies per se, but the product of reporters understandably unable to parse scientific methodology — usually because they were reporting on celebrities or City Hall until, like, Tuesday, when they got assigned to the science beat. They have no chops to critically analyze studies that, for example, claim video gaming turns normal teens into violent teens: like, if you let a kid play shoot-em-up games, he’s supposedly more likely to become a mass shooter.

Reporters inexperienced in covering science typically chronicle the findings of just one (possibly flawed) study — without reviewing

by amy alkon the body of research on gaming (dozens or even hundreds of studies). If they did this, they would see “the emerging picture from the research literature,” summed up by psychologist Pete Etchells, who studies the psychological and behavioral effects of playing video games: “Video games don’t appear to have a meaningful impact on aggressive behaviour, and certainly aren’t the root cause of mass acts of societal violence.”

So, what about studies that claim otherwise? Experimental psychologists Andrew Przybylski and Amy Orben explain that this research is largely “riddled with methodological errors” — errors so major they change the conclusion of a study. (And whaddaya know, the error-driven conclusion is typically the newsmeaty “Lock up your kid’s Nintendo, lady, or you’re gonna be putting your house up for bail.”)

That said, you aren’t wrong that video games can be a “coping mechanism”: thinking and/or behavior we deploy to manage stressful situations and painful emotions. Coping mechanisms themselves — whether going for a run, taking a bath, or engaging in a couple hours of Mortal Kombat — are not bad.

On the other hand, if your boyfriend is at risk of losing his job because he can’t stop gaming or burglarizes the neighbors to buy a bunch of new games, well, that reflects what Przybylski and Orben call “problematic gaming.” However, they explain that this afflicts only a “small subset” of gamers, and it’s likely driven by underlying problems such as anxiety and depression. In other words, problematic gaming is a symptom, not the problem itself.

By the way, contrary to the tired ‘80s/‘90s stereotype of video games played by an isolated loser in the basement, online gaming connects gamers around the globe. Gamers make friends and are part of a community. (Best of all, in the virtual world, nobody’s breathing on anybody, so gamers’ friendships are immune to lockdowns.) And though there’s a widespread assumption that gaming causes social awkwardness, it often opens up a social world for the sort of person who’d rather RVSP to be put to death than go make small talk face to face at a party.

Now, maybe you are so anti-video game that your relationship just won’t fly anymore.

But consider whether it’s actually your boyfriend’s gaming that’s bothering you — or whether you’re longing for more attention than he’s been giving you. If it’s the latter, chances are the answer is not just time spent but quality time: being really present and affectionate when you’re together. Tell him what you need, and see whether he’s up for providing it.

It’s understandably upsetting to have serious competition for your boyfriend’s attention — whether it’s from another woman or the 26 druids he has to gun down before dinner.
