Female inmate dies at Todd Road Jail The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office reported that at approximately 8:48 p.m. on July 25, Jocelyn Gomez, 23 of Oxnard, was found “unresponsive” in her cell by deputies. Medical staff was sought and aid given.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but Gomez was pronounced dead at the jail.

The Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau is investigating the cause of death and autopsy reports from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office are pending.

Alcala endorses Luevanos

Carlos Alcala, chair of the Chicano Latino Caucus of the California Democratic Party, has endorsed Ruth Luevanos, current Simi Valley Councilmember, in her run to represent California’s 25th Congressional District, a seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Mike Garcia.

Luevanos was elected to the city council in 2018 and became the first Latina woman to serve the city in that capacity.

The 25th Congressional District includes Simi Valley and cities in Los Angeles County, Santa Clarita, Lancaster and Palmdale. The seat will be on the ballot in 2022.

Nasarenko supports e-filings for domestic violence restraining orders

Ventura County District Attorney Eric Nasarenko announced his support of State Senate Bill 538 which would allow survivors of domestic violence to electronically file and appear remotely when seeking restraining orders for domestic violence and gun violence.

Both types of restraining orders are allowed by current law but require an in-person hearing. This bill, authored by Rep. Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park), would formalize procedures that many courts, including the Ventura County Superior Court, implemented during the pandemic closures that allowed applicants for these types of restraining orders to appear remotely and file electronically. In Ventura County this took place at the Ventura County Family Justice Center.

Nasarenko was appointed by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors to the elected position of district attorney earlier this year when former district attorney, Greg Totten, retired prior to the formal end of his term.

The VCDA position will be on the ballot on June, 7, 2022.

Irwin announces $3.3 million for Conejo Rec and Park District

Earlier this month Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) reported that $3.3 million has been allocated in the state budget for the Conejo Recreation and Park District.

Irwin said she and Sen. Henry Stern (Dist. 27) secured this funding to support the district in recovering from the pandemic, which impacted classes, after school care and other programs and the district could not collect associated fees. According to a statement released by Irwin, the district saw net losses nearing $3 million and pandemic-related expenses of $1.4 million.

$20.6 million secured in funding bill for Ventura County community projects

U.S. Rep. Julia Brownley has announced that nine projects across Ventura County are slated to receive a combined total of $20.6 million in federal funding through the 2022 fiscal year federal agency budgets that are pending committee approval and then a full vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.

A broad array of projects will receive funding if the bills are approved, including addressing risks along Santa Paula Creek, dredging for Channel Islands Harbor and Ventura Harbor, connecting or bolstering connections from the state water supply to the cities of Ventura and Oxnard and a water reuse project in Thousand Oaks. Nearly $1 million is included for DNA technology to fully prosecute backlogged violent and sexual assault cases and an Indigenous Studies curriculum at California State University, Channel Islands.

Garcia votes to support North/South Korean family reunification On July 19, Rep. Mike Garcia voted in support of House Resolution 826 (HR826), the Divided Families Reunification Act, that will create a report to Congress on state department consultations with South Korea on ways to reunite Korean Americans with family living in North Korea. The bill passed the house, and will move on for a vote in the senate.

Garcia opposes bill limiting use of perfluoroalkyls

On July 21, Garcia joined his Republican colleagues in voting against a bill, HR2467, that would incentivize limiting the use of perfluoroalkyls and related substances (PFAS/PFOA), which are used in nonstick cookware and weatherproof clothing. The bill would direct the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to name PFAS and related acids “hazardous substances” and require the remediation of any releases of these substances into the environment.

The bill would also direct the EPA to determine whether PFAS are toxic pollutants under the Clean Water Act and, if so, establish discharge standards from industrial sources into U.S. waterways. The EPA would also be required to rule on PFAS and PFOA as hazardous air pollutants and test all for impacts to human health.

The bill passed the house 241-183. Reps. Brownley and Salud Carbajal (D-24) voted in support of passage.

State fire FAIR Insurance must provide full coverage A state court has upheld the authority of California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara to order the state’s fire insurance plan, called FAIR Plan, to also offer comprehensive homeowners insurance.

With increased risk of wildfire, insurance companies began declining and dropping coverage for fire in certain areas and the only fire insurance available was an exclusive, expensive policy through the state.

“In addition, by forcing its policyholders to purchase separate insurance policies for liability and contents on top of its ‘fire-only’ policy, the FAIR Plan drives up the price for consumers, which only benefits the insurance companies that profit from this unfair and costly arrangement,” said Lara in a written statement, adding that insurance companies operating the FAIR Plan should “move forward to implement this needed coverage option as soon as possible and I have directed my staff to work quickly to make sure this comprehensive coverage is available to all Californians.”

FAIR Plan information: www. cfpnet.com Hybrid CERT training offered The Ventura County Fire Department is offering free, bilingual, hybrid Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training.

The program includes 12 hours of online training with in-person skills and disaster simulation.

Participants will learn basic disaster response including fire safety, team organization, hazards that may impact their areas and more. Those who complete the 12-hour online session will then have a 16-hour hands-on, practical two-day course.

Darren Kettle After nearly 14 years, Darren Kettle, executive director of the Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC), will be moving on to serve as chief executive officer of Metrolink. He was selected by the board of directors of the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA) and his first day is expected to be Sept. 7.

VCTC will begin the process of recruiting a new executive director.

New Coast Guard air station in Ventura On Tuesday, July 26, the U.S. Coast Guard broke ground for a new facility at the naval base in Point Mugu, which will replace a rented space crews have used to launch and land helicopters.

The new Coast Guard Air Station Ventura will cost $53 million and will include a 48,000-square-foot hangar in addition to a 12,200-square-foot administration building and berthing facility at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu.

The hangar will be used to house four MH-65 Dolphin helicopters and 82 personnel will be stationed at the site, slated to be operational by August 2023.

The Coast Guard’s lease at Air Station Los Angeles expired in 2016 and then it was relocated to Naval Base Ventura County with support from 11 rotating crewmembers from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco, and 13 local permanent crew members.

The station is responsible for 350 nautical miles between Dana Point and Morro Bay and includes the Channel Islands, with missions that include emergency response 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, search and rescue, law enforcement of marine and waterways conservation and protection and drug and migrant interdiction.

4-H does not let camp cancellation slow sustainability efforts

by David Goldstein nyone who has been to the Ventura County Fair knows the 4-H Program helps many local youths learn how to raise farm animals. Each year, it is big news when kids associated with 4-H sell prize-winning cows, goats, sheep, chickens or rabbits they worked hard to raise, learning important life skills. These farm and livestock projects, however, are just one facet of an organization offering youth many opportunities, including education about sustainability.

“Some people think of 4-H as an animal program, but it really offers much more than that.

We help kids find their spark,” said Susana Bruzzone-Miller, the Youth Family and Community Education program manager in Ventura County.

In addition to the 4-H community club program, 4-H has a school enrichment program primarily serving kids who do not belong to the clubs. Both programs are based at the University

John grew up in Ventura County and I grew up on the East Coast. We met in Los Angeles, where I lived for 13 years.

When did you open your business?

We bought the original Rumfish in Belize in 2008 while we were on our honeymoon and then we moved to Belize for eight years. We opened our Ventura location in November 2016.

For the school enrichment program, trained volunteers deliver agriculture literacy, nutrition and environmental education to youth countywide. The program offered distance learning opportunities during the period of COVID-19 restrictions.

Last summer, 4-H staff partnered with environmental educators from the city of Ventura and coordinated a virtual version of the popular annual 4-H Sustainable You! Summer Camp for youth countywide. Focused on environmental sustainability, each day was devoted to lessons on water, land, air, energy and food. Youth engaged in fun, interactive online lessons.

The lesson about water included an experiment showing how various paper products dissolve in water. Comparing how toilet paper, supposedly “flushable” wipes, tissues and paper towels dissolve into water, campers learned that only toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet.

The lesson about land included identifying various types of discards and sorting them into recyclable, compostable and landfill categories.

The day devoted to energy included lessons about the conservation of electricity and sustainable methods of energy generation, such as solar, wind and geothermal.

Included in the day focused on food were lessons about various types of food, where food comes from, how to reduce packaging and waste of food, and how to calculate in “food miles” the effect of transporting food into a location rather than growing it locally.

Expanding on the program’s success, 4-H established a virtual 4-H Sustainable You! after school club during the school year, expanding on the summer camp curriculum.

At the direction of the statewide 4-H office, What inspired you to start this business?

We wanted to move our family to California and, after finding the perfect location where the old Shanghai Beer garden was, we made the move. We wanted to bring the Rumfish concept to the U.S. with a brand unique enough to fill a void.

What’s a typical day like for you?

There really is no typical day . . . we do whatever we need to do to get the job done and still find time for family.

Rumfish is known partially for its great bar. What are some of the most popular cocktails at Rumfish?

We are best known for our orange jalapeño margarita and dragon fruit caipiroska (similar to a caipirinha, but made with vodka). All is ‘Whale’ is a simple gin cocktail with Grey Whale gin, fresh squeezed lemon and agave over a big ice cube. Howler Monkey is a classic from Belize, made with mezcal and housemade hibiscus syrup with Belize bush bitters.

(We import many different bitters from Belize.)

How much creativity do you give your bartending staff in developing the drink menu?

We are constantly collaborating and testing

After a long period of social isolation, however, kids wanted to get out of the house and participate in physical activities, not sit for more virtual learning, so the program was canceled.

“This was the first time since 2014 that we had to cancel the camp, and it breaks my heart,” said Bruzzone-Miller.

The organization offers many more sustainability-focused school enrichment activities, however. Through the “Distance Learning” section of the 4-H’s local website, http://ucanr.edu/4hschoolenrichment, lessons involve plants, worms, beans and management of kitchen leftovers.

Physical classroom-based outreach will start again this fall, and although the “classroom outreach” tab on the local 4-H website has not yet restored an appointment-making tool to arrange for classroom presentations, educators can contact Bruzzone-Miller at sbmiller@ucanr.edu to schedule for next school year.

In one very popular offering, educators present worm composting lessons in the classroom,

teaching the importance of turning food waste into usable compost for the garden. Students observe live red wiggler worms and participate in building a worm bin.

4-H claims on its website to be “America’s largest youth development organization,” with nearly six million participants on an ongoing basis, bigger than scouts or the YMCA. The four “H” letters in the 4-H program logo stand for head, heart, hands and health, as the organization’s pledge says, “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for the environment, my community, my country and my world.”

What do you find most challenging about your work? What’s most rewarding?

Currently the most challenging part is staffing, but John and I hop in as needed.

The most rewarding part is the guest experience. The happy customers — that is why we do it. We hope that our customers feel like they are on a mini vacation with a touch of Belize.

Where do you see things going with your business in the near future? How about in the next 5-10 years?

Expansion plans are in the works! We want to expand our brand here locally and maybe try a new concept.

Anything else you might want to share with us?

Our menu has been a collaboration between John and I and our chef from Belize for 12+ years. We have a great creative working relationship that we truly enjoy.

great cocktail is more than a perfect concoction of ingredients. It’s a vibe, a feeling and both a visual and culinary experience. That could mean the look and presentation of the drink, the glass, the color and the garnish, or the environment in which it is enjoyed. The scene at the bar, the view out the window, the crowd that gathers . . . these don’t just add to a lounge’s atmosphere, but to the flavors imparted by the libation you’ve been served.

Ventura County bars, pubs and bistros offer every type of atmosphere, from super hip and upscale to the deepest dive bar. Sometimes sipping a cocktail is just as much about the bar as the beverage.

o not be dissuaded by the taupe stucco stripmall exterior: This cocktail destination has style and atmosphere plenty and is a great place to gather with friends.

The patio outdoors is spacious but the blue velvet circular booths inside really provide the best spot for sampling the craft cocktail offerings.

We dove in first with a mezcal cocktail called Famous and Naked. Mezcal, like tequila, is made from agave, but in a slightly different process. Mezcal has a smokier flavor, perhaps from the process that involves being steamed in earthen pits lined with lava rocks, then distilled in clay pots. That smoky flavor seems to be a theme in many cocktails of the moment.

The lingering white haze creates an additional sensory experience — the visual presentation of the smoke combined with the scent left behind created a deeper and more robust sensation.

According to our server, Steve Salazar, the edible bubble is achieved through a process imported from Sweden and Slate is the only place offering this theatrical “garnish” on a cocktail.

The bubble pops, releasing the hickory smoke. The cocktail has a bit of Aperol, a rhubarb- and gentian-based bitters apéritif from Italy.

Next were two variations on the old fashioned, the classic whiskey cocktail.

Continuing the smoky theme, The Smokey Old Man is made with premium WhistlePig PiggyBack Rye Whiskey and is also served smoked, but without the bubble. Instead, the smoke pours out of a cut-glass bottle, the white swirls dancing over the cocktail.

vided a subtle brush of taste with that (you guessed it) smoky finish.

Slate’s traditional old fashioned is made with Buffalo Trace Whiskey with the option of a smoke pour. Served properly with a large single cube, this will satisfy the purist.

One in our crowd is a fan of pisco, a type of brandy from Peru and Chile. It’s the foundation of Slate’s False Alarm. The perfect summer drink, it features sparkling wine and raspberry Campari; a refreshing drink that will hit the spot.

Slate has an array of light bites available during happy hour. The crab cakes were well seasoned and cooked to a perfect crunch.

locals’ favorite joint, The Vine in Ojai offers a comfortable atmosphere with tasty beverages — none of the uber-hip vibe frequently found in many other bars in the valley. The back patio is a great people-watching spot on the weekends, or you can test your skills at the Tuesday trivia night.

Smoke seems to be all the rage for cocktails today, and the Vine follows suit. The Spring Cozy has a hint of smoke to meet that trend, along with a cinnamon-infused whiskey, tangerine juice and persimmon shrub with ginger syrup. Despite all that fruit, this drink is far from sweet, and certainly stays true to its deep whiskey roots.

After the mezcal cocktail in Camarillo, I wanted something to compare it with and ordered St. Hector’s Fire, made with Joven mezcal, a splash of tangerine juice, chili agave and lime. This was a delightful surprise with a nice effervescence. Served up in a champagne cocktail glass, it had a great retro feel and a more relaxed energy. A subtle kick of spice from the chili agave offered a nice finish.

This is a great spot for an enjoyable drink in a chill, no-fuss atmosphere.

Because I think that I’m about to disclose a bit of local lore that people try to keep secret: The perfect bar.

Located in a nondescript blue building, an unadorned door leads to a plain hallway that opens up to a small room overlooking the sand dunes of Hollywood Beach. The bar is unpretentious in every way. A small plastic hula girl dances on the window sill behind the bar under a “Cash Only” sign. Luckily, I had a $20 dollar bill.

This bar certainly qualifies as a dive, but it’s also total perfection.

I had heard about its great margarita, and the warm, breezy summer afternoon was perfect for this tried-and-true cocktail. The barkeep mixed it up quickly and served it on the rocks with an ample pour of well tequila. He placed the cup on the bar and said, “That’ll be $6.”

What I hadn’t understood about the Rudder Room was that “on Hollywood Beach” means actually on the beach. The bar does face the ocean, and the side patio provides a wind barrier, but you can take your cold beverage out onto the sand, kick off your shoes, sit in a chair and enjoy the very best atmosphere of any bar.

There is no hickory smoke gun, no edible bubble and I’d venture a guess that there’s no persimmon shrub or tangerine juice options.

The small crowd I sat among was obviously mostly locals. I overheard one man, on the phone, asking a friend, “Why aren’t you here?” I couldn’t help wondering why I’d never been here before. I sipped slowly, savoring the tartness, down to the slice of lime. Another in our group had the Black Manhattan, dark as cola courtesy of Averna, a Sicilian Amaro noted for its inky color, viscosity and gentle bitterness. The Averna rounded out the rye, and gave the drink a fuller, richer, somewhat velvety mouthfeel.

The limitations of the American Dream Fillmore-focused The Last, Best Small Town at Theatricum Botanicum

ometimes you need to get a little distance in order to gain a new perspective.

A trip to the renowned Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon to see the world premiere of John Guerra’s The Last, Best Small Town is just the ticket. Set in Fillmore and described as a “modern day Our Town,” it centers around two neighboring families and their experiences of the American Dream.

Produced in Theatricum Botanicum’s beautiful outdoor amphitheater, The Last, Best Small Town is set during the years 2005 to 2009, in the midst of the financial crisis. The families at the heart of the play live in the same cul de sac but exist in two different worlds.

They are the Millers, who are white, and the Gonzalezes, who are Latinx. Hank Miller (Christopher Wallinger) is the editor of the local paper, and his wife, Willow, (Christine Breihan) is a stay-at-home mom. Their daughter Maya (Jordan Tyler Kessler) is a golden girl who “excels at everything she tries.” Benny Gonzalez (Richard Azurdia) works at the local car dealership and his wife Della (Jeanette Godoy) cleans houses, including some belonging to their neighbors. Benny’s father (Miguel Pérez) is a “constant source of frustration,” while son Elliot (Kelvin Morales), a class valedictorian, seems destined to “make all his parents’ sacrifices worthwhile.” As Maya and Elliot come of age, they experience love and loss, and realize that the American Dream has limitations; and those limitations are neither equal nor fair.

“They are forced to reckon with the fact that the life they trained for no longer exists, if it ever existed,” Guerra explains. His characters experience a breadth of emotions and face real challenges, from micro-aggressions to financial instability.

Inspired by Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, Guerra created the Playwright (Leandro Cano) as the narrator who follows the Millers and the Gonzalezes over the course of four years.

Like in Our Town, each act of the play revolves around a pivotal moment in the characters’ lives, including personal triumphs and hardships and all the dreams and realizations that go along with them.

Guerra chose to set the play in Fillmore, the self-proclaimed “Last, Best Small Town,” because it is a “touch point” in his life. “I grew up in a big road-trip family, and Fillmore featured prominently in many of them. I remember watching from the backseat as Fillmore grew and grew.”

Guerra went on to attend University of California, Irvine, and after graduating he moved to Burbank. “Driving the 126 as a young adult during the financial crisis, the growth I remembered from childhood had stalled . . . It felt like a metaphor for what we, as a nation, were facing. So, I decided to write this play . . . I started writing and couldn’t get Fillmore out of my mind.”

“It’s such a beautifully written play, with so much depth,” director Ellen Geer says. “You see the differences and complexities in the cultures of these white and Latinx families who live next to one another in the same town. Their different lives and the way they make choices. When we did a reading, I couldn’t believe its power.”

“It’s a kind play,” Guerra explains and adds that he hopes it will invite conversation. “For me the play is in conversation with all the things that affect the American Dream. Life can be very challenging, but we soldier on. That’s what it means to be alive. There’s beauty, dignity and sorrow.”

The Last, Best Small Town premieres on July 31 and runs in repertory every weekend with Julius Caesar and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, “making it possible to see all three plays in a single summer weekend.”

Casa Agria has made a name for itself far and wide with its farmhouse-style ales that bring wild yeast and lots of flavor. When it opened in 2015, it was one of the first breweries in the county to make sour ales.

Their findings support his hypothesis on how humility should be defined: “Humility is characterized by the belief that, no matter how great one’s accomplishments or positive characteristics,” they don’t entitle one to special treatment.

Say there’s a famous actor with more Oscars than he has cousins. If humility is one of his character traits, he won’t see his acting accomplishments as a reason he should be treated specially “overall, as a person,” Leary explains.

“Overall, as a person” means that, outside the acting domain, he doesn’t feel entitled to be treated differently — better than other people — unlike the sort of pompous power lord who demands a seat on an overbooked plane with “Do you know who I am?!” Answer: “Yes, sir.

You’re a tiny little man with an ego bloated like a dead body that’s been floating in the East River for days.”

This brief tour of the research on humility should tell you that the problem with your man probably isn’t a lack of it. Chances are insecurity is the actual issue: his feeling not enough for you or, more problematically, being not enough for you. If it’s the latter — if you’re actually much higher in “mate value” — the problem may not be fixable. There’s a term, “positive assortative mating,” describing similar individuals being drawn to each other. Say a woman’s what we call a “10” — gorgeous and also kind, intelligent, and charismatic (basically, a major catch). The 10 and a man who’s a 9.5 (or even an 8) have a chance of making it as partners, but a 10 and a 6 likely have poor prospects. Ultimately, when the shine wears off the relationship, the partner with much higher mate value will start to see the other like a couch that looks shabby in the afternoon sunlight.

But say you’re a 9 and the guy simply feels like a 5 — but is really an, oh, 8.7, or even a 9.5. If that’s the case, you can help him bridge the gap between who he is and how he feels. Research on the “dependency paradox” by psychologist Brooke C. Feeney suggests that in a relationship, when the more emotionally secure partner shows their insecure partner a lot of affection — like through frequent texts, touch, and conversation — it allows the insecure partner to relax and stop clinging.
