Parks package sender still unknown

upervisor Linda Parks has stated that, with the assistance of an attorney, she has confirmed an unwelcome package containing a chocolate penis that was delivered to her home last month was shipped from a company called “Dick At Your Door.” The process is underway to obtain the identity of who placed the order. The company has a San Diego shipping address and states on its website that its products are meant to be used as “gag gifts,” and that the company will not give out the shipper’s information, “unless you do something illegal (don’t do that) or involved in a legal lawsuit (sexual harassment, stalking, etc) and we are required by law.”

In the company’s legal disclaimer it states that by placing an order on the site, “You agree not to order and send our products with malicious intent or the intent to harm anyone . . .You understand that if the receiver of a package considers it harassment or not welcomed, or if you violate any terms of our site, we are authorized to release your information to the requesting party.”

When Parks spoke with the Ventura County Reporter, she referenced the active recall effort against her, as well as developers who disagree with her positions on various projects being proposed as possible culprits who might have sent the package.

Two groups, including the official recall committee, Conejo Valley Cares - Recall Linda Parks, have both disavowed any knowledge or connections to the unwelcome parcel Parks received.

Karen Meyer, listed as the principal of Conejo Valley Cares - Recall Linda Parks, said she knew nothing about the package and they confirmed with their steering committee and volunteers that none of them were responsible either.

A Thousand Oaks-based Super PAC (Political Action Committee) called Move the Needle, which according to its website is “focused on trying to stop the leftist agenda towards socialism and bring back common-sense leadership for our local, state and national elected officials,” also stated the group was not responsible for the package, and further clarified that the group does

not fund the recall effort.

In an email statement dated July 15, to the VCReporter, Tim McCarthy of Thousand Oaks, a founder of Move the Needle, took objection to Park’s reference of the organization having any connection to the package as well as a “reference that Move the Needle is funding the recall . . .

Move The Needle categorically denies any funding for the recall.”

McCarthy did not respond to requests for comment on the flyers containing the Move the Needle logo and name that direct people to two recall petition events in April and May of this year where the recall effort was gathering signatures. However, in an email statement dated July 19, following requests for comment, McCarthy wrote, “Move the Needle DOES support the recall of Linda Parks. We did not initiate nor fund the recall, but we agree with the community’s desire to remove her from office as soon as possible.”

Why is Parks being recalled?

Meyer clarified that Conejo Valley Cares is the only committee “currently working” officially on the recall. She wanted to clarify that the group is not affiliated with Move the Needle.

“The main thing I want to make sure is clear is that we are the recall effort, the only one going on right now. We have not received any donations from Move the Needle at all. No money or donations whatsoever from Move the Needle,” said Meyer, although she understands that other committees or individuals can spend money in support of the recall effort.

She explained that their donations are coming from “citizens and most of our donations are under $50. This is a grassroots thing.” She said many contributors are giving $49, just under the threshold requiring that their name be listed. “A lot are afraid of Linda Parks, they don’t want [their name] listed so they stay under that number.”

When asked why she is involved in the recall, she pointed out her past support for Parks.

“I actually voted for Linda Parks. I’ve been a registered Democrat for 48 years. I voted for her because I liked her stance on open space and protecting oak trees . . . but what she did to the small businesses was wrong. If she had done one thing, I wouldn’t be talking to you.”

Cowboys are in town 15 years of football training in Oxnard

t’s another summer in Oxnard, and another year of summer training for the Dallas Cowboys commences on July 22.

For the past 15 years, the Dallas Cowboys football team has selected Oxnard for some or all of their summer training program and again most practices will be open to the public for free.

Open practices run through Aug. 11 and include a practice game against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, Aug. 7.

Heroes Day on Aug. 10 offers a special day just for military, first responders and frontline health workers.

Recall group, Super PAC disavow involvement

Meyer said all the small businesses could have been notified after the initial shutdown “and given two choices.” They could shutdown, lay off their workers and “when this is all over we will give you financial help to open back up.” Or they could remain open “but you must abide by all the rules and regulations that we set . . . They could have given them the option, a possibility of staying open and keeping afloat. But she didn’t do that. She simply closed them all.”

When asked about the other supervisors, a majority of whom joined Parks in the votes to support orders that businesses be shuttered, Meyer said the group plans to recall them as well.

Meyer said hundreds of businesses have closed “and will never reopen. It’s a very sad thing. There’s a certain thing about living in Thousand Oaks, you know not only your neighbors but the people working in the stores and businesses. It’s one of the joys of living in a middle-size small town, you know people.” The policies that caused the businesses to close have been “devastating” she said.

Meyer understands that the state mandated certain businesses to close, but said that the board of supervisors had a choice to allow businesses in the county to remain open. She pointed to the fact that larger retail stores like Costco and Walmart, which sold both essential and nonessential items, were allowed to remain open, while small businesses with a narrower scope had to close.

“They let [big box stores] continue their business as usual,” she said, pointing out that they were able to keep selling nonessential items the whole time. The small businesses “weren’t given any options. They were just closed.”

Meyer said Parks is the only supervisor who has been in office long enough to allow a recall to take place. “The only person we feel has actually voted for and stood up for the people of Ventura County is [Supervisor Bob] Huber.” The group will not recall him and she said the recall efforts for the other supervisors will come after the Parks recall is complete.

McCarthy cited reasons for the Super PAC’s support of the recall effort, including “her demonstrated government overreach,” noting her vote “to sue businesses and a local church” when they did not adhere to local closure mandates. McCarthy said the businesses and church were “practicing their First Amendment rights.”

The group also views certain declarations Parks brought forward in her role as being outside the scope of what a county supervisor should be doing, “like declaring racism as a public health crisis, or making a resolution against the Capitol violence when no facts had been presented. She merely repeated what TV reporters were saying,” stated McCarthy. He called the resolution a “misguided attempt at marginalizing conservative voters,” and that her actions and votes during the pandemic demonstrate “she has proven to work for Sacramento, not her constituents.”

“I have nothing against her. I’ve never met her. Michele Newell, spokesperson for Aera, said, “none of the gas from Aera’s operations utilize the compressor station. It goes directly from the sales point into the distribution system and is ready to use by the consumer.”

n Saturday, July 17, over 200 people, including local officials, community organizers, parents and supporters from out of town, rallied and marched in West Ventura to raise awareness in opposition to plans by Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) to expand the capacity of a methane gas compressor facility on North Olive Street in Ventura.

The event began with a rally at Kellogg Park and a statement honoring the history of the land and the Indigenous people being pushed off of it, followed by a blessing from Julie Tumamait-Stenslie.

She said the city was told “this venting was part of the safety system” at the facility and that it “worked as intended.” According to SoCalGas, the amount of methane gas released was akin to the amount of propane in seven barbecue-sized propane canisters. Rubalcava said no one was notified because there are no reporting requirements when SoCalGas has to vent gas.

Rubalcava explained the city was told that these events generally occur up to four times a year, and the next most recent event was in January, when about 60 barbecue canisters worth of methane gas were vented. But she added that “no one knows” how often it happens or how much is released, that SoCalGas views them as “no big deal” but that the city “expects these types of answers” and will do “all we can to address this properly.”

“We need you to hear us,” said Maria Davalos, a resident of West Ventura for over 33 years, talking with the Ventura County Reporter before the event. She raised her three daughters there and they are all at universities. She said now is “my time to work for my community.” She is a founder of the organization Manos Unidos. “Our purpose is to be heard...and to [ensure] people know their rights and start exercising them.”

Davalos emphasized that they are very “concerned about the petroleum, the gas being emitted,” and the long term effect on the community.

David Goldstein onsumers might like to imagine their water bottle was filled by sanitary fairies who dipped it into a natural, running spring in the wilderness, but if the label says “purified,” it is just filtered tap water.

Reverse osmosis is a typical industrial-scale process used for this type of filtering, and it has two drawbacks. First, forcing some water through a membrane sends more water to sewers, according to ThePerfectWater.com, which sells retrofits to minimize this waste. Second, the process strips water of minerals needed for taste and health. To compensate, water distributors generally add minerals.

Many people drink bottled water for taste, but if you think bottled water is safer than water from your tap, consider the problem of water dispensers. As noted on the website of Ready Refresh, the largest local company providing water delivery service, “Over time, water dispensers are exposed to things like dirt, dust, pollution, germs, bacteria and sunlight that can impact the dispenser’s hygiene level…” The company recommends cleaning two to four times per year at a level “beyond what customers can

generally do for themselves.” For an additional $80 per cleaning, the company’s technicians use a “professional-grade cleaner…”, removing and scrubbing “all water contact surfaces,” from the spigots to the baffles.

Perhaps you should be even more concerned if your bottled water comes from a natural source. That water costs far more, creates air pollution and traffic as it is trucked long distances, and is not as closely regulated or monitored as municipal supplies.

Companies selling home filter systems raise concerns about a wide variety of potential contaminants. Chris Arnold, vice president of sales for Water, Inc., promotes the Body Glove line of filters, which are top-quality systems designed to remove not just common contaminants, but also items such as pharmaceuticals, Bisphenol A (BPA) and estrone. Every year, public water purveyors publish and post to their websites a Consumer Confidence Report, sometimes called a Water Quality Report, but these less-common contaminants are not among items tested or reported.

Companies promoting home filter systems

Saying union members in the trades are being “left out of the just transition,” Rodney Cobos, a Santa Paula resident who primarily works in Los Angeles, was with a group of pipe fitters who set up a booth. Even though he said SoCalGas hasn’t committed yet to the expansion being a union job, he said “we are pushing for it.”

Carmen Ramirez, Ventura County Supervisor (Dist. 5), also spoke at the rally, saying, “Our children’s lives are in danger,” adding that the “health of everyone” is at the center of “every decision I make.”

Other speakers included Ryan Gellert, CEO of Patagonia, and Alex Fisch, the mayor of Culver City.

Water, Inc.’s website says, “Studies have shown that chloramine is less effective than chlorine and more dangerous to our health.” Concern seems validated when consumers learn that chloramine, because it combines chlorine with ammonia, is toxic to fish and must be removed with carbon filtration or a water conditioner before adding tap water to an aquarium.

Joe Pope, director of Ventura County Water and Sanitation, manages water systems delivering drinking water to Moorpark, Bell Canyon, Somis and Lake Sherwood. He points to the strict standards enforced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and others, ensuring the safety of the water supply. The EPA’s website acknowledges “uncertainties in risk assessment,” but states “EPA’s regulations account for uncertainties” by setting standards to “protect human health even when there is incomplete information.” The EPA website states definitively, “Research and experience indicate monochloramine is safe at levels typically used to treat drinking water.”

Public concern may be heightened when a water purveyor, such as Ventura Water, plans potable water reuse. This involves cleaning wastewater to the point where it can be reused as drinking water. Addressing these concerns, Gina Dorrington, assistant general manager of

operations, pointed to the environmental impact report for the proposed project, which calls for ozone treatments, biologically active carbon filters, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet treatment with advanced oxidation. Ventura Water proposes to treat water to the purest form possible, far beyond what homeowners could achieve with equipment under a sink.

Of course, water purveyors control the quality of water only up to your meter. Your own pipes or fixtures could potentially leach contaminants into water traveling to your tap.

Unfortunately, testing your water for a wide range of contaminants costs about the same as a filter. FGL Environmental Laboratory in Santa Paula charges $300 for a basic water quality test and $650 for enhanced testing, plus the cost of sample collection.

Glenn Olsen, marketing director for FGL, says his lab has conducted thousands of local tests over decades, so I asked him, “Do you use a filter?”

He does, but just for taste. He cooks with and bathes in tap water. “I’m confident water supplied by water systems to people’s homes is safe enough to drink,” said Olsen.

OES seeks community input for updated hazard mitigation plan

A

s a response to the threat of wildfire and flooding, the Blue Lake Rancheria, a federally recognized Native American tribe in Humboldt County, northwestern California, built a microgrid and solar array in 2017 to ensure its community had a locally based source of power in the event of a natural disaster. It wasn’t a matter of if, but when.

In 2019, a wildfire hit the area and the larger electrical grid was shut down. The microgrid, an “island” of power separated from the regional grid, provided electricity to 10% of the population. Two lives were saved as a result. (1) Having power in the event of a natural disaster is a key component of getting evacuation alerts, important instructions and other emergency messages to help residents, businesses, hospitals and first responders protect people and property when disaster strikes, and reduce the compounding negative impacts in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

Rain gardens, resiliency parks, theater renovations (to act as evacuation shelters), aquifer storage and recovery projects, biomass plants, improvements to rail commuter lines to prevent hazardous material spills: These are all examples of projects communities ranging from small towns to entire states have implemented to protect themselves in the face of unpreventable disasters, and to build resilience in their aftermath.

All of these projects, and many more, were included in Hazard Mitigation Plans adopted by the relevant body or jurisdiction, sometimes multiple jurisdictions. If the plan receives approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), then projects qualify for federal and state funding.

Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

Currently, the Office of Emergency Services, an agency of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, is in the process of updating the county’s multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP).

The current plan was adopted in 2015.

Over 20 jurisdictions or districts, named as planning partners, are involved in the update and include representatives from each city in the county, water and sanitation districts and parks districts along with the Ventura County Fire Protection District, Ventura County Watershed Protection District, Ventura County Office of Education and California State University, Channel Islands.

In addition to the planning partners, representatives from various organizations were invited to join a steering committee. Those invited included The Nature Conservancy, the Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP), Ventura County Coalition of Labor, Agriculture and Business (VC CoLAB) and several local chambers of commerce.

Ventura County has selected Tetra Tech to facilitate and assist in updating the plan. The Pasadena-based consulting and engineering services firm is publicly traded and has 450 offices worldwide.

At the July 14 steering committee meeting, the vision, goals and objectives of the plan were reviewed for general consensus and approval. Over a dozen objectives were also reviewed, and while a few minor word-smithing requests were made, the objectives were accepted by the committee members. Objectives listed included a diverse range of methods to mitigate.

The 19 objectives include: • Enhancing local supply chain diversity, along with local food and energy production and increased multi-modal transportation.

• Research adopting and enforcing codes and standards to preserve life and property with a focus on affordability and feasibility in implementation.

• Promote greenbelts, fire breaks in certain communities to mitigate risk of wildfire.

• Protect vital records, strengthening or replacing structures and lifelines to reduce post-disaster disruption and facilitate short-term and long-term recovery.

• Improve and expand warning and emergency communication systems.

• Foster and strengthen interjurisdictional collaboration in emergency services.

• Incentivize mitigation projects in high risk or repetitive loss areas.

• Supporting leadership within private sector, nonprofit organizations and community based organizations to implement local hazard mitigation activities.

• Proactive management of natural resources including: grasslands, forests, oak woodlands, stream channels and beachers, in order to withstand and recover from natural disasters and minimize public safety risks.

• Holistic water management, support and enhance natural processes.

• Mimimze economic impacts of hazard events to the economic drivers of the county.

• Conduct public outreach activities that increase community awareness and understanding hazard risk, mitigation options and preparedness strategies.

Understanding, mitigating hazards

valuable from an architectural, historical or cultural aspect: documents, structures, records or other collections which are considered a valuable community resource.

According to FEMA, a key component of a HMP is public input from residents. To that end, the VCSD Office of Emergency Services has designed a public survey, that is live now, in order to assess the public’s understanding of risks from natural disasters in their neighborhood. Officials with OES stated at the July 14 meeting that the survey will be live through the month of August.

According to the OES website, the survey is confidential and will be used by the county to “gauge the level of knowledge community members have about the hazards that are most relevant...and their preparedness for disasters.”

Critical infrastructure is a focus of hazard mitigation.

According to FEMA, roadways, hospitals, water delivery systems, waste water systems, gas and oil pipelines and other energy infrastructure are all critical.

A FEMA report (2) states that for every $1 spent on hazard mitigation, $4 is saved in recovery spending, resulting in an overall benefit to taxpayers.

At the July 14 meeting under 200 responses were tallied on the survey and steering committee members discussed promoting it through their networks to improve the number of responses making the data more robust and improving the plan overall.

Environmental and human-caused hazards

While the plan is not currently going to have a separate section for climate change-related hazards, the plan will include these adaptations throughout each section. This approach is allowed by FEMA, as it’s recognized that future and ongoing hazard response will have to adjust as climate change continues to influence several types of natural disasters in Ventura County including sea level rise, fires, drought and extreme weather events and temperatures.

“Climate change in and of itself may not be a hazard, but it may change the characteristics of the hazards that currently affect the planning area,” states the FEMA planning handbook.

Hazards don’t arise only as a result of natural disasters.

Today the threats can come from technology or domestic terrorism as well, and hazard mitigation planning can include these threats — although FEMA does not rquire their inclusion in plans.

Cyber attacks, as well as chemical and hazardous waste spills, leaks and related explosions and similar incidents can also be included in hazard mitigation planning, depending on whether they present a risk to the planning area and whether the steering committee and planning partners deem it beneficial.

“People are the most important asset”

Many impacts from natural disasters ripple across communities and it makes sense that multiple jurisdictions and agencies work together on a cross-cutting plan. But FEMA has additional requirements for multi-jurisdictional plans and requires each participating entity to meet several requirements (44 CFR §201.6). These include identifying how each area’s risk from a particular hazard “may vary from the risks facing the entire planning area” [44 CFR §201.6(c)(2)(iii)] and “identifiable action items specific to the jurisdiction requesting FEMA approval or credit of the plan” [44 CFR §201.6(c)(3)(iv)].

Each jurisdiction must also formally adopt the plan.

FEMA breaks down community assets as “anything that is important to the character and function of a community,” and names four broad categories to capture those assets for planning purposes: people, economy, built environment and natural environment.

Each community will create an asset inventory based on these categories. They will also be ranked based on those that are more vulnerable to hazards.

“People are the most important asset,” according to FEMA. Three main goals of this type of planning cited by FEMA are to protect public safety and prevent loss of life and injury, reduce harm to existing and future development and to prevent damage to a community’s unique economic, cultural and environmental assets. (3) FEMA also clarifies that the process should strive to align “risk reduction with community objectives . . . To have value, the plan must represent the current needs and values of the community.”

ects involve private property. But FEMA guidelines explain that by engaging with the community early on, in an effective way, property owners can be part of the process, understand it, and have better buy-in if a project may impact their property.

The process does require ample opportunity for the public to review and comment on a draft plan, prior to it being finalized and adopted.

The jurisdictions participating in the Ventura County plan update mostly match those recommended by FEMA — although cultural institutions such as museums, libraries and historic buildings are not currently listed as planning partners. FEMA recommends that these entities participate in multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation planning, citing their potential to contain, hold or protect resources that are

Wrench into place Teatro de las Américas opens with a new production in its new permanent home

eatro de las Américas has a new home; one they can finally call their own.

Founded in 1992, the bilingual theater company is now a fixture in Downtown Oxnard. After almost 30 years of moving from venue to venue, “the dominant Spanish-language theatre on the Central Coast” has settled into its own location on Sixth Street. More than that, it has taken its place in the revitalization of Downtown Oxnard, something which strikes at the heart of the company’s mission, which is to make theatre available to the community.

Teatro’s history is rooted in producing plays that “reflect the realities of the cultures, customs, and narratives that form the essential fabric of Oxnard life, then, now, and into the future.” Thanks to a deal with the city of Oxnard to lease and refurbish the long-vacant Elizabeth Furniture building, Teatro de las Américas’ own future has never been brighter.

“It feels wonderful,” says Juan Gonzalez, actor and president of Teatro’s board. Gonzalez adds that bringing theater to downtown Oxnard “is the fruition of Margaret’s vision.” Teatro’s executive director Margaret Cortese has been with the company since the very beginning.

Educating the community about the works of great Mexican and other Latin American playwrights Silva explains, there’s nothing quite like being in person. “It was great to have virtual programs, but was just one of the reasons they persevered. Bringing theater to the underserved Latino community artists need to get out and do.” Like the rest of the company, she is thrilled about having “their own place … It’s really exciting. It feels like when you move out and you get your first apartment. Now was another. we have room to grow.”

Teatro’s first production in their new home is Wrench (Llave), written by James Donlon, Matt Tavianini and Joseph Velasco. Donlon directs the play, which was originally produced to rave reviews in 1994 in Santa Barbara.

Set in the 1990s, Wrench revolves around two generations of a Mexican-American family who run an auto body shop. Uncle and nephew are at odds about cars and almost everything else. Then a mysterious shaman appears and offers lessons on “how to tune life’s engine, sparking a magical journey between reality and a deeper truth.” Running from July 30 through August 15, Wrench/Llave is performed mostly in English with some Spanish. Juan J. Gonzalez, Ángel Villalobos, José Valdez, Albert Smith, and Anthony E. Contreras star, and composer Michael Mortilla performs the music and soundscape live.

As Gonzalez points out, Teatro de las Américas’ new venue, which has a black box theater in the front part of the building and another space in the back, feels tailor made for Wrench. That’s because prior to being part of a furniture shop, the back part of the building was an actual body shop. Wrench brings the spirit of the body shop back to life, with everything from a real car on the set to a back door that stands slightly ajar to a bustling Oxnard street. The effect, Silva explains, is that the audience feels like they are “literally enveloped in a body shop in downtown Oxnard.”

“It’s even starting to smell like a body shop,” Gonzalez laughs. He adds that Wrench is the most physically demanding play he’s ever been in. “There is a time when I’m supposed to be exhausted, and I’m really exhausted. When I call out for water, I really want water.”

Donlon, who was born in Oxnard and whose family goes way back in Ventura County, agrees that “the space calls for [Wrench.]” In a very real sense, Donlon himself is also being called. “I’m coming home to give back to the community who raised me.”

ob Van Winkle is ready for early-morning interviews. Armed with coffee and a deft sense of humor, Van Winkle — also known as Vanilla Ice — said he’s looking forward to playing the Tequila and Taco Music Festival on Saturday, July 24.

“Oh my God, I have to have Mexican food at least twice a week,” Van Winkle said with a laugh about the festival.

“A lot of people in Florida can’t handle the spices. I could pitchfork it.”

Joining the Floridian on Saturday, July 24, are Tag Team and Adelaide. The next day sees Ozomatli and a Tribute to Selena and Latin artists hitting the stage.

Since restrictions were lifted, Van Winkle has been playing gigs in his home state. Van Winkle is excited to bring hits like “Ice Ice Baby” and “Ninja Rap” to the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

“We’ve been marinating too long,” he said about the entertainment-wide shutdown during the pandemic. “I want everyone to get out and dance and enjoy anything other than the cyberworld.”

“We’re going to get them out of the cyberworld and back to the last of the greatest decades ever,” Van Winkle continued. “Everything was neon colors. We didn’t need Zumba class. We would dance like crazy to all the great music going on. The fashion, the pop culture, we got our movies at Blockbuster. We’re going to relive it and that’s what it’s

about at Tequila and Taco Music Festival.”

Besides entertainment, festivalgoers can enjoy tequila sampling, street tacos, craft beer, refreshing margaritas and an artisanal craft market. A variety of top-shelf tequila brands are participating in the festival’s Saturday and Sunday tequila tasting, and margaritas and other beverages will be available for purchase.

The concert, Van Winkle said, will hearken back to the 1990s, when Ninja Turtles and neon were all the rage.

“Basically, I don’t care what age you are, we’re all teenagers at my shows,” he said. “I’m the oldest teenager in

ith savory surf, tasty turf, crafty cocktails and local ale, the Boatyard Pub is an excellent place to drop anchor and chow down on some hearty grub. I recently took the plunge and enjoyed a late lunch at this steak and seafood restaurant in Ventura Harbor, and I’m wondering now what took me so long to get here.

Two large patios — one on the sidewalk leading to the parking lot, another in an inner courtyard — allow for outdoor seating, where you can enjoy the cool ocean breezes. A spacious and handsome dining room can be enjoyed as well. As it was a particularly windy day, my friend and I opted for a high-top inside.

The interior has a feel akin to the captain’s quarters below deck: low lighting, lots of wood and brass, comfortable and well appointed. Windows shaped like portholes, nets, anchors and other maritime elements continue the theme.

Even though it wasn’t quite happy hour, there were still several people bellied up to the bar, looking for good beer and libations. Boatyard has those aplenty: I noticed several local IPAs (including Topa Topa Brewing and Poseidon), Anna’s Cider, and a pilsner from Leashless Brewing among the 16 taps — a more than respectable selection. Wine options aren’t as extensive, but there are a few standouts, like the Justin rosé and a Castoro Cellars cabernet sauvignon.

It was the cocktail list — an entire page of the menu — that really caught our eye. Specialty cocktails run $10 to $15 and include all the classics plus some fun tropical-inspired options, such as the Boatyard Zombie that is based on the original made famous by Don the Beachcomber.

There was a lot to tempt us, but we decided to go with the strawberry mojitos, which came up almost instantly and were very refreshing indeed. Kind of some work to sip through a straw, with so much muddled up in it, but I absolutely appreciated the ample use of fresh, ripe strawberries and mint. The bartender doesn’t go overboard with the rum, making this the perfect light summer sip.

Food options are even more varied. Lots of fresh seafood, from tacos and fish and chips to fin- and shellfish platters to

cioppino. If you’re feeling spendy (think $50-60), go for the Alaskan king crab or Maine lobster. There’s also steak and skewers, burgers, salads and even shepherd’s pie. This pub offers plenty of grub from land and sea both.

Fresh seafood is one of the Boatyard’s claims to fame, so we gave the wild Thai chili shrimp appetizer a go. Easily our favorite part of the meal. Big, beautiful Pacific king prawns were first dipped in a lighter-than-air tempura batter and deep fried, then topped with sesame seeds, furikake seasoning and a delectably spicy-sweet chili sauce. So delicious; we even ate the cabbage garnish.

My friend is a fish taco fan, so for her, the grilled ahi tacos were a must. She liked them, and thought the spicy “da kine” sauce was a good addition . . . but she did feel they were overdressed. She could barely taste the fish itself — which was a shame, considering it was fresh, sashimi-grade ahi.

We were both impressed by the teriyaki chicken skewers, however. Juicy hunks of chicken thigh were charbroiled in a Hawaiian-style teriyaki, which was equal parts savory and sweet. I might also add that the entire meal was very generous: three sizable skewers, plus a lovely rice pilaf, a decent side salad and garlic bread. More than enough for a single hungry person. I was unable to finish the plate, but I enjoyed the attempt. Beef and shrimp can be skewered and grilled as well; looking forward to trying those on a return trip.

Boatyard Pub turned out to be the perfect landing for a leisurely, hardy lunch with a good friend. The service was efficient and friendly, the food was well prepared and diverse, and the bar boasts an impressive selection. The prices are a little on the higher side, but for the quantity and quality, it’s not outrageous. I hope to make the Boatyard Pub a regular port of call on future excursions.
