“Anything is possible” Nico Young wins two National Player of the Year awards

n July 2 Nico Young, a recent graduate of Newbury Park High School, made history as the second American student-athlete in 35 years to be awarded two Gatorade National Player of the Year awards in the same year. This makes Young a finalist for the Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year award, which will be announced this month.

Young was named the 2019-20 Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year and the 201920 Gatorade National Track and Field Athlete of the Year. The awards recognize the most elite high school athletes across the country in various sports and athletic pursuits and also considers their accomplishments off the field.

“Nico has proven to our team at Newbury Park that if you set your standards high and work hard, anything is possible,” said Sean Brosnan, track and field coach at Newbury Park High School.

“The coronavirus pandemic has put a halt to so many high school events and seasons, but it will not keep us from recognizing and celebrating the incredible achievements of student-athletes like Nico Young,” said Brett O’Brian, senior vice president and general manager of Gatorade. “To win a Gatorade National Player of the Year award twice in one year is truly a remarkable accomplishment, which Nico has earned through his hard work on the track, in the classroom and in his community.”

For the past three summers Young has volunteered for the Thousand Oaks-based nonprofit organization Many Mansions during its seven-week summer camp for kids from under-resourced communities and has a weighted 4.68 GPA. He has signed a National Letter of intent to run on scholarship for Northern Arizona University.

146th Airlift Wing deployed to support cities

I

n anticipation of increasing civil unrest, the 146th Airlift Wing of the Channel Islands Air National Guard Station, based in Port Hueneme, mobilized and underwent training to be prepared to support local authorities in the event that Black

Lives Matter protests and marches escalate.

Between June 1 and 5, 2020, the unit conducted over 75 military operational flights in order to move personnel and supplies across the state with a focus on events in Los

Angeles County.

“With the indicators of civil unrest rising, expedience and standardization were of great concern for all as we tasked our airmen with increasing our presence to support our state’s civil authorities,” said Col. William Green, vice commander of the 146 Airlift Wing. “We immediately provided our most highly trained and ready security forces to assist at the LA Convention Center, while simultaneously providing our larger tier-two forces with additional training at Camp Roberts.”

Scam alerts The Ventura County District Attorney has released warnings related to several scams currently being seen in the area.

Fake contact tracers: Other counties on the Central Coast have reported people posing as coronavirus contact tracers and attempting to obtain personal information and in some cases trying to collect a fee. All legitimate contact tracing is free and authentic tracers working with the county or the state will never ask for financial information such as a bank account number and will never ask for health insurance information or a social security number.

Fake antibody testing: The public should be wary of ads for testing from unknown or unverified sources or through marketing schemes offered through social media, emails or phone calls that involve incentives for testing. It’s recommended that the public consult with their doctor about any at-home testing to verify safety and efficacy. Updated information on approved antibody tests and testing companies is available on the FDA’s website at www.fda.gov.

Online home rental scam: People posing as homeowners or agents for a home are scamming would-be renters out of cash they think they are using as a deposit to rent a house. This scam typically involves an online listing such as Craigslist.org. The pandemic is increasing housing anxiety, making people more susceptible to this kind of fraud.

Tips to help avoid this include always meeting the owner or agent at the property for an inspection before any deposit is made and not giving any deposit without an onsite inspection. Do not pay deposits in cash or through an online payment system and, when possible, deliver payment to an open, established brick-and-mortar business. Demand a signed lease agreement, receipt and keys, as the law supports, in exchange for initial payment.

School district employee embezzled funds On July 9, the Ventura County District Attorney announced that Retha Mae Drummond, a resident of Moorpark, was sentenced to 365 days in the Ventura County Jail after pleading guilty to five felony counts stemming from stealing public funds from Moorpark Unified School District from 1991 to 2016.

Drummond worked in the child nutrition department and, according to the investigation of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation, she stole funds paid by students for lunches and other meals.

She will also serve 36 months of formal probation. Drummond has already paid $168,810 in restitution.

Real estate agent stole construction funds On July 9, Megan Elizabeth Zucaro of Thousand Oaks was sentenced to 365 days in jail after pleading guilty to one felony count related to stealing construction funds.

The investigation by the Real Estate Fraud Unit of the Ventura County District Attorney’s office found that Zucaro targeted a 91-year-old homeowner in Piru, who was convinced to sign over a 50 percent interest in the property to Zucaro and obtain a loan to develop the property. The property is currently valued at about $2 million.

Zucaro was added to the title and then used all the equity as collateral on a money loan. Zucaro received $165,000 and spent the funds on personal expenses instead of developing the property.

In addition to the jail sentence, Zucaro will serve 60 months probation, has been ordered to pay $300,200 in restitution to the victim and must surrender her license to the California Department of Real Estate.

n Monday, July 13, over 50,000 people were watching the Facebook live video of Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub announcing that a body believed to be Naya Rivera, 33, had been found in Lake Piru.

Rivera’s son was found alone in a rented boat on the lake on Wednesday, July 8, at about 4:30 p.m. Best known as Santana Lopez on the Fox television show Glee (2009-15), Rivera also had a recurring role on the YouTube Red show Step Up: High Water (2018-19).

“Our hearts go out to Naya’s many friends and fans who have been holding out hope for the best,” said Ayub, explaining that detectives from the major crimes unit were a part of the case from the beginning. “Their work on this case revealed there was no indication of foul play and no indication this was a suicide.”

On Tuesday, July 14, the Ventura County Medical Examiner confirmed the identity of the body as Rivera based on dental records. A full autopsy, including x-rays, has been performed and based on those findings the cause of death is stated as drowning, and the “manner of death” as an “accident.” The report from the medical examiner states, “The autopsy findings are consistent with a drowning and the condition of the body is consistent with the time that she was submerged. No traumatic injuries or disease processes were identified at autopsy. There is no indication from the investigation or examination that drugs or alcohol played a role in the decedent’s death.” Toxicology results are pending.

Thousands of fans took to social media to propose possible causes of death, including suicide, and have started a petition with nearly 30,000 signatures (as of press deadline) demanding that warning signs be posted at Lake Piru in light of periodic drownings.

Ayub said Rivera’s body was found “near the surface of the water,” in a location divers had searched previously in the northeast section of the lake with depths of 35 to 60 feet.

n a July 13 press conference, with hospital intensive care units across California feeling the strain of the continued spread of the coronavirus, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the immediate re-closure of several business sectors in Ventura County that cannot be modified to conduct business outside, including fitness centers, worship services, hair and nail salons, barbershops and malls.

While Ventura County had already re-closed all indoor dining, wineries and breweries, today Newsom extended those closures to the entire state. The county had also already put museums and movie theaters on a three-week temporary closure before Newsom’s July 13 order, which closed those indoor activities statewide.

These additional closures are being imposed on Ventura County because it has been on the state’s monitoring list for three consecutive days due to the rate of positive test results (4.9 percent) and rate of hospitalizations (11.2 percent) . (1) In its variance report submitted to the state, Ventura County reported several key factors that are driving these increases: “1) community transmission due to gatherings; 2) essential workplace transmission followed by household transmission; 3) transmission in overcrowded housing; 4) SNF [skilled nursing facility] outbreaks; and 5) increase in widespread community testing through our drive-thru testing locations.” (2) Offices for non-essential sectors and “protests” were also listed as part of the closures that must occur

in counties on the monitoring list for three or more consecutive days.

Newsom clarified that “protests” refer to indoor actions that qualify as a protest.

Across the state, all indoor operations (pickup modifications still allowed) in the following sectors are ordered closed effective July 13: • Dine-in restaurants (outdoor dining still allowed) • Wineries and tasting rooms • Movie theaters • Family entertainment centers (for example: bowling alleys, miniature golf, batting cages and arcades) • Zoos and museums • Cardrooms Additionally, bars, brewpubs, breweries and pubs must close all operations both indoor and outdoor statewide.

“This is what community is about” Talking Pride, protests and more with Diversity Collective Ventura County

iversity Collective Ventura County has been a lifeline for LGBTQ+ locals since its founding in 2014. Stepping into the void left by the Rainbow Alliance, which closed in 2011, DCVC has served as an umbrella organization for several endeavors aimed at supporting the health and well-being of Ventura County’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersexual, asexual, and other individuals and allies. These include Rainbow Umbrella (for youths 13-23), Thrive (a place where LGBTQ+ adults can meet, connect and build community), HOPE (for LGBTQ+ counseling), HIV/AIDS testing and more.

In light of the June 15 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that found Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits workplace discrimination against gay and transgender people, the VCReporter recently spoke with three DCVC members — Board President Genevieve Flores-Haro, Treasurer Kelly-Marie Jones and new Program Manager Ken Barrow — about the challenges facing LGBTQ+ individuals during the pandemic, the recent Black Lives Matter and Black Trans Lives Matter protests, upcoming Pride events and more.

VCR: Ken, you mentioned that you recently joined the DCVC team. When did you come on board?

KEN BARROW: In March — early in March as the board was restructuring some things. They brought me in as a piece of the restructuring, how we would address not only COVID… but other programs in relation to the longterm goals of DCVC. You came on at an interesting time: right before the shutdown, an uneasy reopening, protests, a landmark Supreme Court ruling…

BARROW: A lot of what is currently occurring in society, Diversity Collective is perfectly primed to give a visual and a psychological understanding of what this is. It’s diverse people standing together collectively to correct some wrongs and address some issues that the nation must address. I think that not only does our name properly define what we’re seeing or how we have to address things…it’s very apropos to what we need to become as we look at the future.

Much of his work has been exploring new grant opportunities and community partnerships and developing new programming such as Little Unicorns for 13 and under (we have not launched this yet). There’s also a lot of dry stuff, such as organizational structures and procedures. He’s also getting ready to launch a new volunteer program, with orientation, cultural competency training and advocacy work built into it. That will be coming in the next 30 days or so.

Speaking of Black Lives Matter, the movement has become more prominent this summer, both nationally and here in Ventura County, with Black Trans Lives Matter emerging as a movement in its own right. Has DCVC been involved with the local protests?

GENEVIEVE FLORES-HARO: Yes. As LGBTQ community members and allies [one of the reasons] it’s important that we’re also present for Black Lives Matter is just the fact that our own movement was birthed by a Black trans woman at the Stonewall KELLY-MAIRE JONES: Ken has spearheaded a number riots, Marsha P. Johnson, and you can’t forget that. You can’t of innovative community discussions we have done, such as negate the reality of how Black and Brown trans women have basically always been at the forefront of rights for the LGBTQ community.

I’ve been to a couple [of protests]…The one I went to at the government center [on June 7] — part of why it was important for me was to uplift that Black trans lives matter. What I’d seen at other protests, for example, is that they would misgender some of the victims of police brutality.

So, for example, this year in Florida, a trans man named Tony McDade was killed by police and media has been misgendering him, using his birth name.

And so for me, when you’re doing that after someone has died, you’re basically killing them again — because that’s not how they were known in their community and their circles. matter — because one, they’ve been part of the movement since the beginning and two, we can’t allow them to be deadnamed within broader conversations. [Ed. note: Deadnaming is the use of a birth or other former name of a transgender or nonbinary person without their consent.]

BARROW: I participated in the [June 20] march to the Junipero Serra statue with Black Lives Matter Ventura County — the new chapter being founded. I also participated in several protests in LA and I supported the Juneteenth at Lion’s Park in Oxnard as well. We’ve been very active in our community supporting all of the current [protests]…At every one of the protests, we are represented there…and we’re standing together.

FLORES-HARO: Our program assistant, Dahkotahv [Beckham], was actually there when that truck drove through the protestors at the government center [on June 7]. He’s studying to be a therapist, so he went into crisis counseling mode with some of the folks in the immediate aftermath of that. DCVC — we’re here, we’re on the frontlines, supporting however we can.

BARROW: It shows how, when we are represented, we can serve immediately. Because Dahkotahv was there, because of his natural training, he was able to assist immediately the community that was hurt…Dahkotahv immediately was able to address what he saw as a crisis and assist in the well being of those participating.

Did you feel welcome at the protests?

BARROW: I did. I felt welcome. It was a welcoming environment. At the protests I’ve been to, there’s been time to get to know who you’re around. I’ve noticed that several of the protest leaders were taking the position of “get to know the people that are around you…turn to your neighbor, say hello.” If anything, we’re getting to know each other. … I felt pride in seeing our flag. I felt pride seeing people I’ve seen in our community at the actual protest… It let me know that everyone was right where they thought they should be.

FLORES-HARO: I went to one of the Juneteenth events in Oxnard that was put on by New Gen — one of the organizers made it a point to get on the microphone [and said], “We got a lot of heat for wanting to be inclusive of LGBTQ communities.

But as people who are ourselves oppressed, we have to be in solidarity with other marginalized groups. At that point…it’s not that I didn’t feel welcome before, but, like, having that person actually vocalize it on a mic…This is what community is about.

vcreporter.com BARROW: One of the things the board did have us work on is creating a supplemental census. There are many issues that the [U.S. 2020] Census did not address in relation to our community.

I think that [supplemental census] may be rolling out soon. Just to get those numbers and that information and that data that, as Genevieve says, is being lost in translation.

FLORES-HARO: We are doing a Ventura County-specific mini-census. We’ve even talked to [California State Senator] Toni Atkins’ [D-San Diego] office, [California State Assembly] Speaker [Anthony] Rendon’s office, about the possibility of rolling out a California LGBTQ census. Perhaps not this coming year…but I think there’s a richness in that data that we’re missing.

I made a point of telling them thank you for saying and speaking that truth.

JONES: The other thing too is, just for lack of a better word, mainstream visibility. The city of Ventura [actually flew the Pride flag at city hall in June] for the first time ever. A lot of the cities in the county have done Pride month proclamations as well. I think all of those little pieces together help the cause as well.

Let’s talk about the pandemic and the shutdown. How has DCVC continued to serve its community during the closure?

BARROW: One of the activities that we have been doing is having different dialogues and discussion groups. Our youth group has been addressing some of the concerns. Rainbow Umbrella has been meeting weekly. We also have services that are still being rendered. A lot of what we were doing has transitioned from in-house to virtual. All of our interactions have been virtual of late.

The only one currently coming back in house is HIV and AIDS rapid testing.

Since that’s healthcare related, I would have imagined it fell under the “essential” category.

BARROW: It was, but the issue was the preparation. …

Right when [the shutdown] happened, everything was scarce.

Everything that we needed as a facility to address the immediate concerns were scarce or gone. As those resources came back, as [companies] produced more of them, that gave us the ability [to reopen]. Every time California enters a phase, we have to be compliant to that phase. Phase 1 put some restrictions on how we would have to address [compliance for in-house testing]. Phase 2 released our wings, so now we’re flying again in relation to serving our community.

Was there a lot of excitement or discussion when the Supreme Court upheld trans rights with the June 15 ruling?

BARROW: I was in a support group that was addressing several of the Supreme Court rulings…Structurally we didn’t do any programs specifically. … Internally, we’ve dialogued about it back in the office every day! One of my friends in LA had a virtual celebration that I popped on. We just all got together via Zoom and just celebrated the fact of just knowing how workplace protection was forever.

Do you have any concerns that these workplace protections won’t be enforced or aren’t comprehensive enough?

FLORES-HARO: I think at this point we’re taking things with a grain of salt. My own message around this has been that it’s great that we have workplace protections, but three days before the Trump Administration rescinded healthcare protections for trans people. … So it’s like we can work, but we can’t have access to healthcare, to hormone replacement therapy. I think the work is not done there yet. …There’s still more work to be done holistically around how trans people navigate the systems here in the United States. And just recognizing that that ruling, like many other rulings, isn’t like an overnight thing. It’s the result of decades of organizing and understanding that we stand on the shoulders of LGBTQ organizers that have been fighting against workplace discrimination going back to the ’40s and ’50s.

BARROW: Something I like to point out…Just the natural bias within every human…Just because the Supreme Court did rule in favor, there’s a natural bias that has to be somewhat weeded out. Technically, there will still be occurrences [of] discrimination. We have to watch it weed itself out and also always be aware that we have to address any of those concerns.

How did COVID-19 and the stay-at-home orders affect the people that use DCVC’s services? What kinds of issues came up?

BARROW: We had a lot of depression, isolation, anxiety, there were some mental health issues that we were addressing and we were referring people. … We did have Coalition for Family Harmony, we had several counselors that we had access to, and so we were sending them to those different resources. Also be aware that Dahkotahv created a resource list of all the resources that could assist and support our community as this occurred.

Literally as it was occurring, we were creating new documents and ways of maintaining service on a virtual-type of interaction.

VC Pride celebrations are going to be Aug. 15-16 this year, and I understand that they’ll be virtual.

FLORES-HARO: We’re trying as best as we can to replicate that weekend of events. Our main event is going to be a virtual Pride that we’re going to be streaming on YouTube. We are looking at two hours in the early afternoon of programming: drag queen performances, musicians, poets. And doing something similar in the evening. [for those who have to work during the day]. On Sunday we’re working on an in-person Pride caravan.

The current plan is to start at our center in Ventura and drive up to Ventura City Hall. And part of why we wanted that is that visibility piece — so that people can physically see that caravan of rainbow flags, trans flags, and just know that we’re here and we’re present in our community.

How has DCVC as an organization been impacted by COVID-19?

BARROW: We need support. Because we’re unable to gather, one of the key pieces to a lot of our fundraising or even our visibility … When we speak of Pride, we not only speak of self-affirmation, we speak of our visibility or increased visibility. And so if anything, now we need the support. We need those lights.

We need the response and the interaction. Because normally we would have a gathering and people would interact with us and you would be able to see us. Now, as everything is changing and people are restructuring what our new normal is, now as that is occurring, we have to try our best to just let everyone know about the support that’s needed for our LGBTQ+ community as well as all of [DCVC’s] programs, events, services — everything that we are dong… Usually people could walk in and engage or come in and engage…but now they can’t. So virtual links and donations and likes or posting our events…that not only encourages us, but it also gets the word out in a way that you would if you were naturally in an environment with us.

FLORES-HARO: I think for a lot of the folks that utilize our services, we’re probably the only safe space that they have. And I think the stay-at-home orders with COVID-19 mean that you have maybe some of our trans youth that are sheltering in place somewhere where they can’t be themselves, where they can’t be addressed by their pronouns. So I think that as much as we can try and create virtual space while we’re waiting to open up our physical space — I think that’s what’s key.

The curtain rises online for local theater productions

T

he news of theater’s demise has been circulating for centuries. There were actual dark spots, to be sure. Namely the Dark Ages. Yet theater adapted and came back.

Every single time. Not even the plague (the one that ravaged the world during Shakespeare’s time, that is) could kill it.

So here we are again. Theaters are dark in the interest of public health, but theater folk are stubborn. They will always find a way to create because it’s more than what they do: It’s who they are.

In Ventura County, like all over the world, theater companies are reimagining ways to connect with each other and bring art to the people.

One example is Camarillo Skyway Playhouse’s Stage Door Players. The company, whose members range in age from 12 to 19, is led by Libby Baumgartner. The company had several projects underway when the stay-athome orders came.

“It’s strange to see something that brings people together disappear overnight,” she says, but the company didn’t waste time in adapting to the new reality.

It followed in the footsteps of other theaters like The Elite, which recently streamed an online version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and is set to do other digital productions soon (theelite. org). The Stage Door Players wrote and produced Electronic Barrier which was live streamed on July

f 2020 had been a typical year, the 26th Annual Ventura Music Festival would have been kicking off this weekend. This summer is unlike any other, of course, and so VMF has moved its programming online with the Music Connects digital concert series.

The festival did manage to put together one live show, however, thanks to the Ventura County Fairgrounds and its drive-in entertainment technology.

VMF in partnership with Concerts in Your Car will present the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band aka J2B2 on Thursday, July 16, and its multitalented founder can’t wait.

“To get a call saying, ‘we want you to play,’ that’s phenomenal,” says Jorgenson, whose last gig was in March.

“My friends around the country are jealous!”

Jorgenson, who lives in Ventura, has seen plenty of phenomenal things in his time. He founded the country rock Desert Rose Band with Herb Pedersen and Chris Hillman (legends in their own right), shredded with session guitarists as a member of the Hellecasters, and has played on stage or in the studio with Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Sting, Elton John, even Luciano Pavarotti (among many others).

With folk, bluegrass, country, pop, rock, jazz and classical in his repertoire, mastery of nine instruments under his belt and five different bands with which he performs, there are few musicians who can match Jorgenson’s versatility.

“I’ve always had multiple musical personalities,” he says. Jorgenson was born in Madison, Wisconsin, but grew up in Redlands in a classical music family. He started studying piano at the age of 4 and clarinet at 8. His degree from University of Redlands is in woodwind performance (bassoon, clarinet and saxophone), but he also played in rock bands.

His first professional gig was, oddly enough, at Disneyland.

“I had just graduated high school, and I was supposed to go to Florida to work at Disney World,” Jorgenson recalls.

“But at 17, I was too young to cross state lines.” So he began working as a musi-

cian at the Anaheim park, performing clarinet with the Main Street Maniacs.

“Once I met people in the entertainment department, I got on their radar.”

Summer jobs and short-term gigs followed, with Jorgenson playing Dixieland, bluegrass and swing throughout the park. He was part of a group hired to perform bluegrass music at the brandnew Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in 1979.

“It started as a temp position,” he says. “Originally, it was just six weeks, entertaining people in line for a new ride. They ended up keeping us on for eight-nine years.”

While Jorgenson looks on that time fondly, acknowledging the benefits of

steady work and the opportunity to “learn as you earn,” he had other ambitions. Days at Disneyland were often followed by nights playing in Hollywood clubs.

He eventually crossed paths with renowned mandolin player David Grisman. The two of them were jamming together at a NAMM Show (one of the world’s largest trade shows, put on by the National Association of Music Merchants) when Chris Hillman (of the Byrds) came by.

Talent calls to talent, and before long, Hillman and Jorgenson formed the Desert Rose Band with Herb Pedersen. The band enjoyed success — particularly on the country charts — throughout the 1980s, and Jorgenson was named

With his John Jorgenson Quintet, he’s been able to pay homage to one of his favorite musicians: Django Reinhardt.

“When I was playing guitar early on, it was mostly electric,” Jorgenson says.

“Then I got interested in acoustic. I was looking for an acoustic guitarist that had the same excitement as Jimi Hendrix.”
