n Saturday, July 17, at 11 a.m., a rally and march are planned to draw the attention of Gov. Gavin Newsom to a planned expansion of the methane gas compressor station being proposed by Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) at a site on West Olive Street in West Ventura.

Local groups and organizations, including the Westside Clean Air Coalition, along with other regional and statewide groups will be participating in the event aimed at providing a platform “to really lift up voices of the front line community,” said a spokesperson

for Food and Water Watch, a national organization participating in the effort to stop the SoCalGas facility expansion. Statewide organizations Last Chance Alliance and Vision are also participating in the rally and march. Group leaders are calling on Newsom to direct the California Public Utilities Commission to order an Environmental Impact Report for the facility expansion. Some are seeking action from the governor to completely close down the facility.

For several months, residents have been speaking out about concerns related to leaking methane and the close proximity of residents and elementary school students who attend E.P Foster Elementary, just across the street from the compressor site.

Newsom has taken a tougher stand in recent months against the fossil fuel industry. Just last week, the agency tasked with oversight of oil and gas drilling, California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGem), denied a cluster of

David Goldstein ast week, following publication of my column about disposal solutions for wood treated with preservatives, a colleague reminded me that I had ignored the best alternative to disposal.

Recycling pressure-treated wood is not possible in local programs because toxins must be kept out of mulch and compost, and reuse is limited by concerns about breathing toxic dust from cutting and sanding treated wood. But “reducing” discards should be the top priority.

Rather than removing and replacing pressure-treated wood, first consider repairs.

If the framing is still strong, problems like warped, cupped, split or splintering wood can be fixed with some effort, while problems like loosening nails or faded luster can be fixed more easily.

The simplest aesthetic repair is power washing and wood staining. Over time, foot traffic, weathering and the sun’s ultraviolet rays will affect wood’s surface. For unpainted treated wood, you can bring back the beauty of the original wood grain.

or semi-transparent stain containing a UV inhibitor and water repellent every year or two to maintain the beauty of outdoor wood.

The easiest structural repair is replacing loose nails with screws. Screws have more holding power and can fix minor warping, cupping, or curving. Sanding can reduce high edges of weather-worn wood, but sanding treated wood requires a dust mask, safety goggles, and a shower afterward. An alternative to sanding may be turning over the board.

Use building code-approved, corrosion-resistant fasteners and connectors suitable for use in pressure-treated wood, such as hotdipped galvanized fasteners or stainless steel.

Coastal areas of Ventura County, especially with saltwater spray, should use code-approved stainless steel fasteners and connectors.

Treated wood available in local home improvement stores is likely to be infused with copper azole. Copper prevents soil fungus from attacking the lumber and deters insects, including termites. Copper azole, manufactured by Viance, LLC, was standardized by the American Wood

permit requests submitted by Aera Energy for hydraulic fracturing in Kern County.

But the Newsom administration has yet to demonstrate this kind of push against oil and gas infrastructure like an expanding gas compressor facility, the spokesperson said.

SoCalGas officials say the expansion is needed to push more methane gas from the Ventura oil and gas field, operated by Aera Energy, north to Goleta, due to declining production in that area. They say demand for methane gas in homes has not decreased and they call the project an “upgrade,” although the new equipment does increase the amount of methane gas the site can handle.

The Ventura County Reporter reported last week on what SoCalGas officials called an unscheduled release of methane that led to dozens of reports of gas odors in the area on Friday, July 3. According to a spokesperson for the city of Ventura, crews responded at approximately 3:51 p.m. and called the incident “cleared” at 4:12 p.m. when they determined the area was safe. Crews conducted “atmospheric monitoring using special censors and determined there was no threat to the community.” Apparently the gas odor dissipated quickly and crews determined

evacuation was not necessary, although some residents did opt to leave the area.

The city has followed up with SoCalGas seeking more information, and asked for notifications in the event of future similar events. Residents point out that many homes are within a short range of the site, and in the event of an explosion or other emergency they are likely to be impacted.

Ventura Mayor Sofia Rubalcava and Ventura County Supervisor Carmen Ramirez are expected to be joined by Culver City Mayor Alex Fisch and members of the Aliso Canyon community who suffered a major gas blowout incident from a SoCalGas facility in their community in 2015. They are also asking the state to close that facility.

In contrast, treated wood from over 18 years ago likely contains arsenic or creosote, and some wood still sold for industrial use contains these toxic treatments. Creosote-treated wood in your garden should definitely be replaced, and wood treated with chromated copper arsenate also raises concerns, according to FineGardening. com in its online Issue 15, which summarizes technical studies on the subject.

Inorganic arsenic accumulates in living tissues, and the study cited shows arsenic “migrated from the wood into surrounding soil.” Although only samples less than three inches from the edges of the wood showed “higher than background levels of arsenic,” and uptake of arsenic into the edible parts of vegetables was also limited, concern remains because soil from various parts of a raised vegetable bed often spread during gardening.

For a non-toxic alternative, Accoya®, sold by Chino-based Sierra Forest Products and Royal Plywood Company in Cerritos, treats wood with acetic anhydride. It releases only vinegar into surrounding soil, according to Daniel Trebelhorn, an Accoya spokesperson.Trebelhorn also claimed in an email to me that the product offered “superior dimensional stability, resistance to rot/ decay” and warranties for 50 years above

ground and for 25 years if in ground or freshwater contact.

Ventura County Building Official Ruben Barrera noted not all alternatives are “standing approved” options. He said options would be researched and approved “if appropriate” in response to a proposal seeking a permit. Many uses, such as raised beds, do not require permits.

Non-toxic wood treatments are more expensive than conventional treatments, priced closer to redwood, another alternative to treated wood. Trex and other composite decking manufacturers also provide alternatives for wood decking. Although more expensive than treated wood, composites are long-lasting and made from recycled products such as wood fiber from cabinet and door manufacturers, carpet fiber, and film plastic from bags. As an added benefit, some of the plastic bags used by Trex at their Nevada factory are collected from Ventura County.

n Monday, July 12, the Ventura City Council responded to concerns from community members about the lack of affordable rental housing by directing staff to make time on a future agenda for a presentation on the housing crisis in the city.

“This is really about stopping the bleeding, we can’t keep up with rent prices. Our families are being displaced during a massive disaster,” said Lucia Marquez, senior policy advocate with Central Coast Alliance United For a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE). “Even before the pandemic the housing crisis is really real in our community.”

stabilization” to protect renters as rental costs skyrocket with limited housing and an influx of renters looking for a place to live. CAUSE organized a call-in from Bell Arts Factory on Ventura Avenue, bringing together residents and CAUSE staff to speak during public comment at the online meeting.

“We’ve been hit with disaster after disaster [and many] local working class, undocumented familiese don’t qualify for assistance; we feel our communities bleeding,” ???said who??, adding that a “surge in unemployment is really exacerbating this housing crisis.”

Councilmember Lorrie Brown made the motion, seconded by Councilmember Mike Johnson. The vote was unanimous to put the discussion item on a future agenda before the council. Marquez hopes it is calendared quickly.

Maria Navarro, a policy advocate with CAUSE, reported that in Ventura, 46% of the population are renters, and of those people, 57% are “rent burdened,” meaning they pay more than 30% of their income to rent. She said wages in the area have been stagnant, while rents continually go up. Even with the rental support programs enacted during the pandemic there is “no guarantee” that the assistance will leave renters “debt free.”

Maria Perez, a 25-year-resident of Ventura, told the council that her daughter has been searching for an apartment for two years but is not finding anything affordable. Meanwhile the “luxury apartments” being built across town are “not accessible to our families.”

Some speakers cited the rental application requirements. Rosie Morales, a 20-year Ventura resident, said many require high wages, and even a “minimum number of children . . . we have to hide our own children” to qualify for

ast month, Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks, who is currently Chair of the Board, received an anonymous and unwelcome package at her home in Thousand Oaks. The cardboard box read, “Congratulations” on the outside, and inside a surprising item.

The box contained a chocolate penis, with the words “Eat a Dick” printed on the underside of the box’s lid.

“This is the level of gutter politics going on in this town,” said Parks. A note with the delivery read, “Enjoy your early retirement...You deserve it.” Parks takes that as a reference to the current effort to recall her from office.

Parks said she can’t say who sent the box “because it’s anonymous,” but she mentions the proponents of the recall effort and a Political Action Committee (PAC) called Move the Needle that has so far directed $5,000 toward the recall effort (OpenSecrets).

Marquez explained that the policy requests involved three key components that work together to protect renters and keep housing affordable. First, rent stabilization, which would place a cap on how often and in what amount rent can be increased. This can be done by the council, or by a rent board formed by the council. Second, “just cause” eviction policies, which would prohibit evictions without just cause; and third, displacement assistance.

She cited a policy in Santa Barbara requiring landlords to pay three months in displacement assistance to renters who are evicted by no fault of their own (for example when a property is listed for sale or a landlord is opting to move back into the home).

a vote on a development issue and she mentioned an “irate developer.”

In her many years of public office beginning in Thousand Oaks as city council member and a stint as mayor, Parks has experienced people unhappy with her votes or actions, and upset, but she said it has never risen to this “personal” level.

“It was delivered to my home,” she emphasized.

Recall moving ahead

The recall effort passed the first hurdle but the date is not yet set.

The websites associated with the recall effort list issues like the pandemic closures, the county’s actions against certain businesses that did not comply and the fact that Parks voted in support of those closures and legal actions. The votes in support of those actions were either 4 to 1 or unanimous. Other issues unrelated to the work of county supervisors listed as reasons for the recall effort include sex education being

taught in schools. Parks pointed out that in her supervisor position she has no role at all in what gets taught in schools.

Parks described the many endorsements she’s already received as atypical for a county supervisor election, saying it shows how out of left field the “right wing” recall effort is. Federal elected officials including Sen. Diane Feinstein and Alex Padilla along with Congresswoman Julia Brownley and Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub, Ventura County Professional Firefighters’ Association and Supervisors Matt LaVere, Bob Huber and Carmen Ramirez, among many others, have endorsed Parks in opposition of the recall effort.

She said Monday night was about the council members hearing from speakers about “what this lived experience looks and feels like . . . and we hope [the council will] be taking the first step to take action around this issue.”

Jazz singer-trombonist Aubrey Logan brings style and energy to opening night of the Ventura Music Festival

W

hen the Ventura Music Festival resumes with live performances July 23-25, there will be none of this “Let’s ease into our return to normal.”

Not with Aubrey Logan as the opening night performer.

“Hopefully,” smiles the jazz singer-trombonist dubbed “the Queen of Sass” by her fans, “it’s 90 minutes of, ‘Put on your seatbelt and don’t blink!’”

In the first place, this Washington-born, Boston-educated and now Texas-based performer — who opens the Festival July 23 at Pacifica High School Performing Arts Center in Oxnard — doesn’t do “normal.” Logan’s high-energy style is matched only by her high-caliber musicianship that earned her the jury’s first place award at the 2009 Shure-Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and a golden ticket (pass to the finals) on American Idol.

As a featured artist for Postmodern Jukebox and the Dave Koz band, Logan has also worked with Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach, Josh Groban, Smokey Robinson and Patrice Rushen. She has earned praise for her eclectic array of original songs and interpretations of standards.

Her newest collection, appropriately named Standard, ranges from “American Songbook” staples (“Fascinating Rhythm,” “On the Sunny Side of the Street”) to 1960s and ’70s pop hits (“The Beat Goes On,” “Dreams,” “MacArthur Park”), all of which Logan embraces with a contemporary spice that compels the listener to take notice.

“Aubrey truly makes you stop in your tracks,” says Koz. “With such a communicative voice and style, and a great sense of musical adventurousness, there’s really no emotion she can’t tackle musically.”

Improvisation rules

Not bad for someone who took up trombone at age 13 primarily because “all my nerdy smart-kid friends were in band, and I wanted to be with them,” she says. That was in middle school near Seattle, where her mom was a choir teacher and urged the band director to include Logan, who could sing and read music.

“Fine,” the band director said, “as long as it’s not the flute.”

Logan’s dad, a high school administrator and also a music lover, brought home brass and wind instruments for his daughter to try. “I chose the trombone,” she says, “because I could make a sound with it.”

Before long, Logan was making sounds strong and sweet enough to take her to Berklee College of Music in Boston. Though having played, sung and experienced a variety of musical genres, she focused on jazz.

“I didn’t want to be confined to the notes on the page, as you are in classical,” she says. “And I’m naturally drawn to improvisation, as well as pop. When I grew up, my folks played Carole King, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder and bands with big brass sections like Chicago. That was a big influence on me.”

“And,” she continues, “I love to perform. My first job was playing Mary in a production of The Secret Garden when I was 10 or 11, and I got to sing, dance and act.

And I saw how everyone had a great time. That’s the feeling I’ve always wanted to leave the audience with through my performance.”

Now based in Austin, where she lives with her husband, software developer Chris Knight, Logan — when she’s not performing — spends time at the gym and is able to indulge in her passion for barbecue, preparing smoked meats, stews and Texas chili.

But music remains her first love, and after more than a year of pandemic-mandated idleness, she is more than ready for the Ventura Music Festival.

“My hope,” she says, “would be that you expect lots of laughter and lots of tears, because hopefully my music makes you take yourself not too seriously, and yet bawl your eyes out in the feelings we all share in life with love, loss and laughter.”

The gift of music

Mystery piano appears at Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura

entura’s Unitarian Universalist Church has been blessed with the gift of music. A mysterious piano appeared in the church parking lot earlier this summer — in the middle of the night. No one knows for sure where the piano came from, but a message written on the back of the instrument does give a hint as to the motivation behind the gift: “This piano was donated to and for the people of Ventura. It is open to play for us all.

Please treat it with respect and most of all enjoy!”

Joe Osborne, a member of the church’s publicity team, describes the peculiar arrival of the instrument.

“About a month ago we were notified by security that someone was playing a piano outside our church at 3 a.m.,” explains Osborne. “By the time anyone got there no one was there. Although the piano was left for us, the message indicates it’s a gift to Ventura. Although there are theories about who gave it to us, we really don’t know.”

Though its origins remain a mystery, its significance does not. The church plans to celebrate this symbolic gesture by hosting an outdoor open mic event. “Basically, it’s a signup like most open mics and usually Sue and Kent Brinkmeyer manage the event as well as perform in it. There was a lot of discussion about what to do with it, and we’re a church with a very active open mic series.

So, we decided to make it an event and combine our first in-person open mic since the pandemic started with this piano.”

And to continue this celebration of musical unity, Osborne explains that the church plans to honor the gift giver’s message by keeping the piano outside through the summer season as long as it is safe to do so. “The inspiration for keeping the piano outside this summer is that it’s not our piano. A person made this gift to the city of Ventura, and we want to respect that idea, and let others share in the gift until the seasons change and outdoor life becomes less healthy for a piano.”

The church’s mission is to “reach out to create a more just and loving community, in harmony with nature,” so it is only fitting that a symbol of music would signify their return to hosting these events. As the past year has demonstrated, the collective spirit of Ventura County is vibrant and resilient. Look no further than the community’s shared love of music for proof. Unitarian Universalist Church aims to foster this spiritual growth.

“Our music program is a key element for our congregation,” explains Osborne. “It dovetails and supports very nicely with our worship service . . . The open mic is an extension of that as it allows our members a chance to communicate through this wonderful medium of music. It also helps to build inclusion and community among our members and the community at large.”

arina Cafe is not the kind of place you’d stumble upon. It’s smack-dab in the middle of the Lake Casitas Recreation Area, for one thing. And it’s right next to the bait shop and boat rental place. Easy to miss, even easier to write it off as a rustic little snack shop.

You’d be very, very wrong.

Locals know that some of the best views of Lake Casitas can be had here, either outside on the shady patio or inside in the dining room, with air conditioning (a real relief in the summer months) and large windows that provide an excellent vantage point. With natural vegetation all around, the mountains in the distance and a chorus of birdsong and crickets, it’s an incredibly tranquil spot for breakfast and lunch.

The views and ambience aren’t the only reason to come here, though. With a decent selection of beers on tap (such as Lagunitas, Topa Topa Brewing and Institution Ale Company) and in the bottle or can (Modelo, Stella Artois, Fat Tire, amongst others) as well as wine and mimosas, it’s a wonderful, low-key spot to wet your whistle. And while this is not a fancy cafe, by any stretch of the imagination, it’s clean and bright and comfortable, with roomy vinyl booths and a few tables. The boat hanging from the ceiling is a charming touch.

So, plenty to recommend it, without even mentioning the food. But the food really does this place proud: Mexican and American cuisine, all homemade.

The day we went for an early lunch (after picking the kids up from the wonderful Casitas Rowing summer camp), the friendly person at the counter noted that we were lucky — the electricity had gone out that morning, but it came on in time to cool the restaurant off prior to our arrival.

“I guess you were closed all morning?” I asked.

“Oh, no,” she replied. “We were still serving. We don’t use microwaves.”

It’s not a big crew in the kitchen, but they whip up an impressive selection of omelets and egg dishes, burgers, sandwiches, tacos, enchiladas, burritos and more. Hearty, simple and — as we soon discovered — very tasty.

Burgers and fries are like a siren song for our boys. My husband and I decided to give the Mexican food a try, with chicken tacos for him and a chile verde plate for me. Mexican orders include beans and rice; as the rice was still being prepared, we substituted fresh green salad and hash browns. And because we were quite hungry, we started with an order of chicken nachos for the table.

It seemed like the nachos came out almost immediately, still sizzilng a bit with the fry oil. They were topped with beans and cheese, and lots and lots of shredded chicken (cooked with tomatoes, garlic and onions). A delicious mountain which we failed to summit; we ended up taking home some nacho leftovers.

As far as burgers go, these were more than respectable — basic but well prepared, and plenty juicy, with all the fixings. The fries were great, too, cut thick and coming to the table piping hot and very crispy. If you’re looking for standard American fare, Marina Cafe will set you up.

But the star here, really, is the Mexican food.

Those nachos were an amuse bouche for the tacos, which were fried crisp (no store-bought shells here!) and heaped with more of that savory chicken, as well as cheese, tomatoes and lots of greens.

The beans on the side were mellow and creamy — made with lard, I’d guess. Altogether, it was a simple, filling and tasty meal with a home-cooked feel. The zippy salsa was very fresh; I suspect it was made in house as well.

It’s true that the chile verde was on the thinner side; more of a soup than a stew. Quite good nevertheless and full of flavor — lots of citrus thanks to hunks of tomatillo and, I’m guessing, fresh lime. The cubed pork was cooked to tender perfec-

I like rice just fine, but I’d take hash browns with a meal like this any day.

I’ve no doubt that campers, anglers, boaters and others who recreate at Lake Casitas have discovered the pleasures of Marina Cafe. As for the rest of us . . . it’s worth the trek!

There are a handful of free two-hour parking spots at the entrance to the recreation area (it’s about a 10 minute walk from there to the cafe), or you can ask for a complimentary Marina Cafe pass at the gate and drive in. Come for a homecooked meal and a nice view, stay for a hike around the lake and some bird watching. It’s a great way to spend a few genuinely delicious hours in one of Ventura County’s most scenic and peaceful spots.

My relationship with a man I’d been dating was getting serious. His previous relationship ended when his girlfriend dumped him. Last month, he ran into her and told her he was seeing me. She began crying and begged him to take her back. He was torn about what to do. I told him his feelings for her weren’t romantic but stemmed from a sense of obligation, and that he should be angry at her for trying to make him feel bad about moving on with someone else.

He still went back to her, and now they’re engaged. I’m furious. Why would he choose to be with someone who dumped him? Take a question I often hear from readers: “Why did he/she stop returning my calls?” Helpfully, many suggest the most likely explanation right in their email; something like, “I just know they were kidnapped by the Russian mob.” Right. And they’re probably still tied up in an abandoned warehouse, being tortured till they give in — agree to withdraw and hand over the entire $36.72 in their checking account.

Though female tears can be a sort of kryptonite for straight men, I’m sorry to say it’s unlikely this other woman’s boohoos and a sense of obligation on your guy’s part mind-controlled him into going back to her.

There’s this notion that relationships simply involve two people who love each other making each other happy. Supposedly, once you’ve got that, it’s all cartoon birdies, butterflies, and flowers till you’re both sleeping out eternity in side by side cemetery plots.

In fact, the human mind evolved to have a built-in accounting department. Its jobs include preventing us from being “all give” to some “all take” sociobro, which, for ancestral humans, would’ve posed survival issues. Social psychologists Jessica Parker and Melissa Burkley find that single women (but not those in relationships) rate a man as “significantly” more desirable and pursuit-worthy when they’re told he’s taken.

“This may be because an attached man” has been “‘pre-screened’ by another woman,” speculate Parker and Burkley. This “pre-screening” is a form of “social proof,” a term coined by social psychologist Robert Cialdini. We sometimes decide what we should value based on what other people value. In this case, your finding the guy boyfriend-worthy might’ve led his ex to think, “Uh-oh...I made a mistake dumping him.”

Of course you’re hurt and disappointed.

But it sounds like you also feel cheated to some degree, like something you deserve was stolen from you. There’s a tendency to think love should be “fair,” meaning whatever you put into a relationship, you’re owed in return. In fact, people in relationships ultimately act in their self-interest. That sometimes involves dumping the partner who’s done nothing but love them for the partner who dumped them but is willing to take them back.

Understanding this is no guarantee you won’t get hurt. However, if you’re realistic about love — recognizing you can’t expect it to be fair — and about the danger from potential mate poachers, you might have a shot at amping up your game and fending them off. To be on the alert for them, keep in mind the physical features that make a man especially attractive to a single woman on the prowl: broad shoulders, a chiseled jaw, and big perky boobs on the girlfriend sitting on his lap.
