Sewer not best local alternative for food scraps

ome people love the convenience of their garbage disposals so much, they would rather risk the occasional inconvenience of a sink clog than deal with the odor of leftovers filling their kitchen trash container. If materials washed down sinks are small enough, and if homeowners run their faucets and keep the disposal motor running long enough, clogs are rare, according to Bob Vila, whose helpful website, at BobVila.com, also has tips for unclogging drains.

The first thing Vila suggests for unclogging a kitchen sink drain is to turn off the breaker controlling the disposal. As he notes, “A successful home repair will never be remembered as much as a trip to the emergency room.” Most clogs can be removed, he notes, with only the simplest of tools: a, plunger, baking soda, vinegar, pliers and a flashlight.

Garbage disposals offer neat and convenient disposal, but is your sink an environmentally responsible place for managing food waste? Joe Dillon, a spokesperson for InSinkErator, speaking to an Associated Press reporter in a 2019 article on the subject (“Is your kitchen-sink disposal environmentally friendly?”, by Katherine Roth, March 20, 2019), argued his company’s product provides environmental benefits. Indeed, keeping food out of landfills avoids the generation of methane, and some wastewater treatment plants recover energy from organic material.

As noted in the AP article, however, the environmental consequences of in-sink disposal are highly dependent on local conditions. In Ventura County, those conditions raise concerns about garbage disposals.

Water required to transport food through sewers makes this form of disposal environmentally costly in dry areas like Ventura County. Also, there are no composting facilities for biosolids in Ventura County, so long-distance trucking is needed both to send the biosolids from local wastewater treatment plants to compost sites and again to distribute the resulting compost to users, which are usually farms growing non-food crops. Moreover, some local wastewater treatment facilities have found it too expensive to send biosolids to distant compost facilities and instead 6— — June 3, 2021

In Brief Camping fire restrictions in Los Padres

As of May 25 open fires, campfires and charcoal fires are prohibited in areas outside of developed recreation sites or designated campfire use sites within the Los Padres National Forest (LPNF). The restriction is due to an increase in wildland fire risk and will be in place through the end of fire season in late fall.

The restriction extends to holders of California Campfire Permits, meaning those with that permit may still not have fires, but permit holders can use lanterns and portable camping stoves fueled by gas, jellied petroleum or liquid fuel.

Fireworks of any kind, including “safe and sane” types, are prohibited in all areas of the national forest.

Recreational target shooting is also prohibited within LPNF except for two designated areas that hold a special use permit: Winchester Canyon Gun Club and the Ojai Valley Gun Club.

Phil Archer, lead wastewater operator at the Ventura Water Reclamation Facility, explained another problem with handling food scraps locally through garbage disposals.

“The microorganisms we use for biological treatment of our wastewater are adjusted to an expected level of organic material in the water. If a lot of people, or even if just one large generator, started dumping a lot more organic material down the sewer, we would get out of balance.

At some point, the space we have available for adding microorganisms would not be enough.”

Gina Dorrington, assistant general manager of operations at Ventura Water, explained another challenge with material capable of becoming septic. Without sufficient water flow through pipes, organic material can get stuck in pipes and rot. Hydrogen sulfide toxicity can build up in pipes or upset the microorganism balance at the reclamation facility.

Businesses and public recycling coordinators are developing options for food waste composting in Ventura County. Within the next few years, the county and local cities will implement programs in compliance with state mandates requiring diversion of food waste and other organics from landfills. The first facility

likely to be available for this purpose will be at the Limoneira Farm, on a site operated by Agromin. When it opens, residents served by haulers using the site will likely be asked to place food scraps in their curbside yard waste containers. Perhaps at some point in the following few years, another facility could open, enabling residents of other areas to keep food scraps mixed in their garbage, to be sorted out mechanically prior to composting.

Of course, “reduce” and “reuse” come before “recycle” on the waste management hierarchy, so the highest priority for recycling coordinators is to help people avoid food waste in the first place. Donation of surplus food for human consumption, making food waste into animal feed, backyard composting initiatives, school garden development and other options top the list.

Currently, businesses and schools in some parts of Ventura County can also make arrangements with their refuse hauler for separate collection of their food scraps for composting at out-of-county facilities.

On May 26 the Ventura County District Attorney (VCDA) announced murder charges against Fernando Jarquin of Oxnard for the stabbing death of Karla Cabrera, also of Oxnard.

Jarquin and Cabrera were living together with their two young children when he, according to VCDA charges, stabbed her after an argument on May 21.

Jarquin is in custody with no set bail. An arraignment hearing is scheduled for June 10, 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 12 of the Ventura County Superior Court.

Amgen gets FDA approval for lung cancer treatment drug

On May 28 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced approval of a drug treatment called Lumakras (sotorasib) developed by Thousand Oaks-based pharmaceutical company Amgen. The drug is approved for adult use in patients with a specific type of locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer.

Currently it is the only FDA-approved treatment for this specific form of lung cancer.

The treatment is effective in individuals with lung cancer who have a specific gene mutation in the KRAS G12C gene group. This type of mutation occurs in the genes that regu-

late cell growth and division.

The FDA issued “accelerated approval” based on overall response rate in the clinical trial, and may be contingent on verification and further information in confirming trials.

According to the FDA, lung cancer is the most common type of cancer and is mostly categorized by the genetic mutations that cause it.

Officer guilty of sexual misconduct with inmate

Former deputy with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Leonard Herrera Lopez has pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges for sexual misconduct with a female inmate at the Ventura County Jail.

The two penal code violations Lopez is charged with are engaging in consensual sexual activity with a female inmate, and entering the cell of a female inmate without another jail employee present.

The incidents began in 2019 when Lopez was a supervisor in the unit where the victim was held. He entered her cell, kissed and touched her, and she reported the incident.

Investigation reports indicate Lopez told a watch commander he was being “set up” by the inmate, making it look like he was the “aggressor.” Supervisors offered to move Lopez to another unit, but he declined.

Lopez was ultimately reassigned.

The reports state that Lopez was seen on video in the jail entering the victim’s cell “unnecessarily . . . on thirteen separate occasions.” When he became aware of an investigation, he “cleverly went into defense mode,” saying he was being “set up” by Internal Affairs.

State law provides that jail inmates are unable to provide legal consent for any sexual activity with custodial staff.

The victim has filed a civil lawsuit regarding the matter.

Sentencing for Lopez is scheduled on June 14, 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 14 at Ventura County Superior Court. He faces a maximum sentence of 180 days in jail and one year probation.

Camarillo transit fare increase

Public transit fares in Camarillo will increase on July 1, 2021 in an effort to balance an increase in costs of providing transit services.

Fares have not been raised since the city implemented transit services 20 years ago.

Bird nests and solar panels Residents working to hold HOAs accountable

Residents rally to protect nests

Last month, residents in a neighborhood near Channel Islands Harbor got involved in helping to ensure nesting birds would be protected when the HOA board voted to remove over a dozen old trees.

Janice McCarthy lives across the street from the Hueneme Pier in Port Hueneme-Surfside IV Condo Complex, and while she says most neighbors are OK with the older trees being removed, “we are concerned about the timing,” she said via email to the Ventura County Reporter. “We are in the middle of nesting season.”

State law prohibits the disturbance or destruction of any active nests — for any species of bird. Active nests are defined as containing eggs or baby birds. Waivers can be granted in the event that a tree is posing a danger to people or property.

When McCarthy learned of the plans to remove the trees, she reached out to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department, the California Fish and Wildlife Department and the Ventura County Resource Management Agency. She also contacted the local Ventura Audubon Society.

“They are supportive, helpful and concerned,” she said. “The city of Port Hueneme has declined to get involved and the board is still moving forward” with the tree removal as of May 24. But she said homeowners were getting involved.

McCarthy was surprised at the city’s response and noted that she recently saw tree trimming at a theater venue property in her neighborhood.

“I happened to see tree trimming at the theater venue next door to

where I live while walking my dog at the beach a few days ago,” she said. “I saw birds freaking out and flying around the tree being trimmed as if there were nests in the tree.”

Just a few days later, McCarthy had good news. On May 27, she said that “we were able to come to a resolution with our board to provide a report of an arborist’s examination of the trees to be removed.”

She said the report assured her and “most of the homeowners” that the trees did not contain active nests.

She notes, however, that there may be some hard feelings between the residents and HOA board members.

Solar panels removed, homeowner being fined, legal action underway

On May 18, Heather and Brenden West received a letter from the HOA board for the Deckside Villas in Oxnard notifying them that they were being fined $100 a day for failing to get proper approval for the installation of the solar panels on their condominium, even after the panels were removed on May 21.

In a note to the Wests, dated May 11, 2021, Deckside HOA attorney David Swedelson stated, “The Board and other owners do not want to look at the panels if they do not have to and they do not have to as the panels should have been installed over the flat roof.”

But state law prohibits an HOA from prohibiting and/or restricting the installation of solar panels in a way that would reduce their efficiency more than 10%.

Swedelson did not immediately respond to inquiries.

n the past month residents and neighbors of communities governed by Home Owners Associations are dealing with issues related to tree cutting during nesting season and forced removal of solar panels.

The boards of HOAs are elected by the homeowners but stories of them running a bit outside the lines are common. Here are two current cases, one where an HOA responded to concerns brought forward by residents, and another that is ongoing and raising questions.

California law regarding HOAs and solar panels states, “any covenant, restriction, or condition... that effectively prohibits or restricts the installation or use of a solar energy system is void and unenforceable.”

(California Solar Rights Act, Civil Code Sect. 714) Heather West says the flat portion of the roof only has room for three panels. They were installing 16.

“Which is an 80% reduction in efficiency, violating the law.”

“We have nothing against solar panels,” said Ron Wiesner, president of the HOA board at Deckside, speaking to the Ventura County Reporter on June 1. Weisner is a local real estate agent and according to home sales records online has represented both buyers and sellers of properties in the Deckside Villas community.

Wiesner said the Wests did not follow the “proper” procedure for getting permission to put the solar panels on their home. He explained the process includes completing the required Architectural Modification application.

In an email exchange with the subject line “Architectural Request” dated Oct. 23, 2020, obtained by the VCReporter, the Wests were sent two documents from Ruth Cederstrom, certified community association manager with Concord Consulting and Association Services, which manages and conducts administrative tasks for the Deckside HOA. One of the documents is titled “3666 Solar Conditionally Approved” and is the Deckside Villas Homeowners Association Architectural Modification form, which was filled

out by the Wests seeking permission to install solar panels and is dated Sept. 24, 2020. That form includes a note dated Oct. 20, 2020, from HOA Board Vice President Stephanie Alex; on a line item titled “disapproval,” it reads “see letter attached.”

This letter, the second attachment dated Oct. 23, 2020, is titled “3666 Preliminary deny but conditions.”

The letter acknowledges the receipt of the Architectural Modification form, but states the request to put up solar panels is “preliminarily denied” but will be “reconsidered” when additional information is received.

The information requested included the size of the panels, whether they will be on the flat portion of the roof, and it requires the signature of two adjoining neighbors. The HOA was also requiring the Wests to sign a “maintenance covenant” for the panels.

“We are a duplex, we just needed the one neighbor’s signature,” said West. “They had all the documents, city permit, shade reports...the issue with the maintenance covenant is that it doesn’t comply with California law, it states they can charge me their attorney’s fees with no cap.” The covenant also has to be approved by all HOA members, and West said, “they won’t do that.”

from the neighbor, and received an email confirmation that the application was received.

When asked about the Conditional Approval document, Wiesner declined to comment further and referred questions to Swedelson.

The solar panels were installed on Nov. 13, 2020. Jerry Ramirez, an inspector with the city of Oxnard, checked the system and found it was installed properly and met all requirements.

On the day of installation, West said members of the HOA board came and photographed and videotaped the installation and she felt they were harassing her. Ultimately the Wests were notified that they were being fined for the solar panel installation.

“We had the panels removed by the installer last week and the HOA is still fining us,” said West. The panels were removed on May 21, 2021.

Total fines levied against the Wests so far are over $800, all assessed after the panels were removed.

Wiesner said removing the panels could resolve the fines unless there was other damage to the roof which the “association would be responsible” for fixing.

The dispute between the Wests and the Deckside HOA is ongoing.

New Planned Parenthood location opens

n May 21, city, county and state elected officials joined staff and residents in celebrating the ribbon cutting for a new Planned Parenthood Health Center in Oxnard that opened the week of May 24. Individual donors contributed $1 million to support the expansion of care into Oxnard.

The Oxnard Health Center, part of the six-location network that makes up Planned Parenthood California Central Coast (PPCCC), will help combat barriers to Oxnard residents receiving the healthcare they need.

“PPCCC is opening a new health center in Oxnard to help improve health outcomes and meet our patients where they are,” said Jenna Tosh, Ph.D., president and CEO of PPCCC. The health center is considered state of the art and provides confidential healthcare services, including wellness exams for men and women, cancer screenings, birth control, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and abortion. The center will also offer gender‐affirming care such as hormone therapy for transgender, intersex, non‐binary, and gender non‐conforming patients.

entura County loves it’s Certified Farmers Markets (CFM).

These community markets provide a direct link between the grower and the consumer. On the designated market day, a local parking lot is transformed by bustling farmers setting up tables and booths, from which they sell fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, herbs, eggs, and any number of locally grown products. There are no middlemen, grocery stores or distribution chains.

There are also no size, packaging or label requirements. But there is one very important requirement for farmers market sellers: They must have grown and produced what they are selling.

A seller cannot go, for example, to a local packing house and purchase seconds wholesale from a big grower and pass it off as something they grew. A beekeeper cannot buy a barrel of honey from another beekeeper or another country, pour it into their bottles, slap their label on it and sell it. An orange grower with a small ranch of 50 trees that is selling year round at CFMs in quantities that would require 100 or more acres sends up a red flag. Even if a product is produced in the state or county, if the grower selling a potato didn’t grow that potato, it’s fraud.

This requirement is at the heart of the history of farmers markets.

“Back in the late ’70s there was a cannery strike,” said Ed Williams, Ventura County Agricultural Commissioner (AgComm). Williams worked for 30 years with the state’s agricultural department and for six years with Los Angeles County. He said the state’s peach growers were hit hard and their “crop was falling on the ground” as the canneries were closed during the strike. The peach growers wanted to market their fresh fruit directly to the consumers, but they were restricted by labeling and packaging requirements. The state authorized “emergency relief” that allowed the growers to sell their peaches directly to consumers — and thus sowed the seeds that would become “the Certified Farmers Market program in California.”

In 1978, Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law the Direct Marketing Act, which created the certification rules touted as a way to promote state-grown produce being sold locally and help ensure that growers would always have a way to sell their products directly to the public regardless of what was happening up the processing or distribution chain.

That act also designates the local AgComm as the agency responsible for certifying growers to sell at farmers markets, and lays out the penalties for violations.

Sell only what you grow

Farmers markets are a booming business. In a 2002 agricultural census report, Ventura County ranked 20th in the nation, with $3.3 million in annual direct sales through farmers markets and Community Supported Agriculture.

To get certified, a grower applies to the local AgComm and lists the various things they grow, produce and want to sell at a farmers market. An AgComm inspector will come out to the farm and visually verify that a person applying to sell, say, Meyer lemons is not actually growing Eureka lemons. Certification is very specific.

Wendi Mitchell of Ventura-based Blue Ridge Honey was cited in January 2019 when a staff member packing up for the market inadvertently grabbed one jar of honey infused with cannabidiol (CBD) oil, extracted from the cannabis plant. This particular product was created in partnership with 101CBD. Blue Ridge did not produce the CBD oil itself. It was only supposed to be sold at Blue Ridge Honey’s storefront in Ventura, but accidentally ended up at the market. Blue Ridge was cited, attended a hearing and ultimately paid a fine for the mistake.

are issued. “On my ag certificate, I don’t just have the hives, but every fruit tree growing in my yard. I have one tangelo tree. It’s basically my husband’s vodka screwdriver tree. But I could easily drive down, fill up a box truck of tangelos, go to all 16 markets and sell from my one tree.”

She said it’s the same with a “producer with one tree, one beehive, one garden box,” because the system lacks any limits.

“Our job is to verify they are actually growing” the product they are certified to sell, explained Williams about certification inspections. “We make sure they have the product in the ground, and list all [products] on the certificate.”

Growers are recertified each year. AgComm inspectors also verify that the grower is still growing what they are certified to sell during the selling season. Once certified by a county AgComm, growers can sell those products at any CFM in the state.

“Truth in advertising”

Mitchell said that with the growth in revenue possible at farmers markets, some people are finding ways to “cheat the system and turn a higher profit with less work involved.”

Williams noted that growers do get caught for trying to boost quantities, for example by buying a product wholesale from a packing house and then selling it at a CFM “representing that they grew that product.”

When asked if there are certain products that the public should watch for not being grown by the vendor, he said “all agricultural crops” are potentially being grown by someone else. He listed honey, eggs, fruit and vegetables of particular of interest.

“Our job at a farmers market is to make sure the products they are selling are listed on the certificate,” said Williams. Growers must also use a “sealed scale” that is accurately weighing items sold by weight. “Our key objective in the entire program” is to ensure a vendor is

“not misrepresenting the products they are selling.”

Inspectors look for certain things that could mean a product wasn’t grown by that seller. Potatoes that are all the same size, with very few blemishes. “Certain things pretty obviously have gone through commercial processing.”

Frequently a grower will buy a product from a packing house for wholesale prices, remove the labels and put them out on their table at a farmers market. The product was grown in California, but not by that grower. Williams emphasized that is still misrepresenting and goes against the intent of farmers markets.

“It’s fraud . . . Truth in advertising, that is the key.”

Due process in the face of violations

On April 25, two vendors at the Channel Islands Harbor Farmers Market were cited. One was selling a product not listed on their certification. Williams explained that often, this sort of citation is simply a “fix-it ticket.”

AgComm will verify the grower had that product in the ground and add it to the permit.

The other vendor cited was selling an item they didn’t grow or produce — a much more serious issue. Williams said they “have reason to believe” the grower was selling a product they didn’t grow, and his office expects to levy a civil penalty fine, but the investigation is still active.

The violation process includes an offer of a hearing, and the grower can appeal any finding. The fines are a civil penalty and can be “minor, moderate or serious.”

Fines range from $400 to $1,000 per violation, said Williams. According to state law, fines can range up to $5,000.

“We very rarely suspend a certificate on a first violation,” Williams said. But his office has the authority to do that “for up to 18 months, that would be most likely for a repeat violation.”

Williams said parts of the law limit AgComm’s discretion when it comes to granting certification to growers who have had violations and even fines in the past. “As June 3, 2021 —

As for verification that the amount being grown can support what is being sold, that gets called out by the grower on their certification application.

For example, the current permit for Underwood Family Farms is six pages long and lists 164 different agricultural products, from artichokes to watermelon, with acreage and estimated quantity in weight or units listed.

Williams said inspectors can deny a certification if an estimated amount to be sold doesn’t add up based on space allocated for growing. But they would most likely ask for an adjustment on the application.

“Sometimes what looks like an infeasible amount may be feasible if they have multiple cropping patterns or greenhouse production,” explained Williams.

William’s office also has to be able to prove the violations or fraud in court. “Proving some of the violations is a lot more complicated. It’s a legal action that has to stand up in court.”

When a violation is issued, due process must occur.

Notice is given, including a statement of what the vendor is being accused of. “We give them an opportunity to review the evidence, present their own case,” Williams said. An official from another county will act as an “unbiased hearing officer” and the entire process is “subject to review by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and then the Superior Court.”

There have been 112 violations issued since 2017.

According to Williams, most were rather minor issues, such as selling with an expired certificate or selling products the grower forgot to list. About two thirds of the violations issued had fines levied. Seventeen violations involved a vendor selling a product they didn’t grow or otherwise produce.

“It’s lying to the consumer”

Any grower, big or small, can sell at a farmers market.

“1,000 acres or two trees, there is nothing wrong with any size operation selling at a farmers market,” said Williams. Bigger growers often take “seconds” — odd shapes and sizes and blemished items — that won’t be accepted at grocery stores and sell them at farmers markets.

But if inspectors see a small grower with, say, just two 200-foot-long rows selling “nice uniform potatoes, all the same size that show up six months after the season is over, it’s unlikely they grew them . . . two rows of potatoes is not going to produce 10,000 pounds of potatoes.”

State law requires that markets are inspected at least 10 —

once every six months.

But Williams said, “We have been doing three to four inspections per year at each market. But that still leaves 90% of the year with no inspectors checking,” Inspectors also respond to complaints from the public, growers and managers of the markets.

“Right now, cherry season is on us,” Williams said. Commercial packing operations are busy; Stockton and Kings County are bustling. “Their practice is to sort out all of the doubles” — one stem with two cherries — which get sold as seconds.

“One of the signs is that somebody is getting those doubles and selling them at a farmers market,” Williams explained. “Maybe it is legitimate.” He said a smaller grower could conceivably take their fruits to a packing house for sorting, and there is nothing wrong with that . . . but due to cost that’s typically not done. So seeing a bunch of double cherries at a farmers market is usually either a larger grower selling their seconds, or a person trying to pass them off as something they grew, when in fact they bought them from the larger grower.

Honey laundering

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that in 2017, imports of foreign honey were three times that of domestic production, with Argentina providing about 20% of the honey in the American market that year.

Local honey is, nevertheless, in high demand, and a growing number of sources with “local” on the label are popping up across Ventura County.

According to the American Honey Producers Association, “Honey fraud is a criminal and intentional act committed to obtain an unfair economic gain by manipulating honey and selling a product that does not meet globally accepted standards for honey.” A honey research group has reported that honey is the third most faked food — behind milk and olive oil — in the world.

But the fact that there are no standards in labeling make honey ripe for being adulterated.

Various ways to manipulate honey include “masking and/or mislabeling the geographical and/or botanical origin of honey,” and “dilution with different artificially manufactured syrups,” such as corn, sugar beet, rice and wheat syrups.

Just last month Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) introduced legislation, Assembly Bill 519, that would require clear origin information be included on honey packaging.

“Californians deserve to know where their honey is coming from and what they may be ingesting,” said Irwin. “Ignorance stings and not knowing where your honey is coming from could pose a real threat to one’s health.”

“The proposed legislation could impact producers from Ventura if they are blending honey from other countries,” said Williams, but he clarified that, “Our office does not have information that honey sold at any local farmers markets has any foreign honey in it.”

As of press deadline, AB519 is stuck in assembly and is

not moving forward during the current legislative session.

Williams pointed to challenges in enforcing honey requirements. The amount of honey being produced is decreasing due to the drought, so some Ventura County beekeepers take hives out of state for part of the season. In addition, some sell on the national market through retailers like Amazon. Sales records are sometimes poorly kept and “producers who don’t want to get caught may not be very accurate in their reporting.

Only honey sold at Certified Farmers Markets with origins that are outside of the state violate the law, including honey from overseas that may be blended with local honey. Since no other legislation exists, consumers are unlikely to know what they are actually buying and it’s up to the honey producer to properly label any foreign-sourced honey on their containers. But with the popularity of “local” honey, there is little incentive to be transparent about the true origin of what’s in the bottle.

“Know your beekeeper”

One way to find out what’s in the bottle is to test it by examining the pollen (from sage, wildflower, orange and other plants) under a microscope.

“Foreign producers, and probably domestic [beekeepers], can filter [the honey] so clean that it removes any pollen source. It’s kind of like washing away your fingerprint,” said Wayne Scott of Ventura County-based Api Vida.

Api Vida doesn’t make honey to sell, but it breeds queen bees and honey bees to sell to beekeepers and they conduct research and development into products to help keep bees healthy and alive. Simply put, they make nutritional supplements for bees. They are looking at honey and bees at the genetic level.

Scott said really good honey will only be coarsely filtered, just enough to remove bees, bugs and similar debris. A coarse filtering process leaves all the pollen in the honey and can result in a cloudy final product with some wax that has risen to create a “sheen on top. We know that coarse filtered is raw and pure.”

Scott said it’s hard to tell the difference between real, pure honey and adulterated honey. “You have to test for different sugars. You might find high fructose corn syrup, or rice syrup . . . That is not good. It’s getting harder and harder to detect. Only a few can track it down at the molecular level.”

He said it’s akin to the problem of global olive oil fraud.

Honey labeling requirements are essentially nonexistent, and without enforceable standards, the label “local” has no meaning, unless you’ve verified with the beekeeper.

“I know in China and Southeast Asia they use antibiotics that you can’t use here,” he said. “There are only three or four that you can use on bees in the United States, and their use is restricted. You have to get a prescription from a veterinarian.”

And Scott says that those antibiotics from China can be found in the foreign honey.

“That is not good, it is not supposed to be in there.”

s Ventura County slowly begins the process of returning to business as usual, residents are careful to remember that a return to normalcy does not mean a lack of progress. Many have taken the past year as an opportunity to grow amidst hardship. Artists across the board have had their livelihood impacted by the pandemic, but they have also taken time to self-reflect and advance their craft. Jazz musicians have had a particularly unique experience with lockdown as it relates to their ability to play music together.

Jazz music is innovative in that it is a communal activity; more so than a solitary one. The concept of the young jazz cat who spends hours practicing alone in his room is a stereotype that unfortunately overlooks the collective soul of jazz. In fact, people often think of “soul” as being the essence of an individual, but in the jazz sense of the word, it refers to a shared energy, a common wavelength. When you say that a jazz musician “has soul,” you do not mean “they’re so individual.”

Rather, you mean, “I feel a connection with the music they’re making.”

And speaking of connections, Richard Barth devotes his time to connecting jazz musicians with their local audience. Barth runs VenturaCountyJazz.com, a website dedicated to advertising events and platforming performers.

“One of the reasons I love the scene here is that you’ll get someone who is world renowned who will play these little venues in Ventura County,” says Barth. “They’re not doing it for the money . . . they’ll be helping out a student jazz competition, be a backing band for the kids.

Ira Nepus, the trombonist for Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, he’ll go out of his way to schedule a high school band to open for a big band so that they can get real-world experience. So many legends who live right here in the county will come to local jam sessions . . .

I’m a woman in my early 20s. I’m considered pretty, and I’m in good shape. I started dating significantly older men (in their 40s and early 50s). I love that they’re adults and I don’t become a girlfriend-slash-nanny, motivational coach, and resume editor like when I’m dating guys my age. But these older men and I are in different life stages with different goals. They want to get married way sooner than I do, or they’ve had kids and don’t want more. How can I trick my brain into wanting men my age who are less emotionally and otherwise mature?

In my 20s, upon moving from Michigan to Manhattan, I was quite the grandpa chaser. I have a thing for the lived-in male face and a ripened mind. But back then, I felt personally and professionally adrift — unsure of who I was and what I wanted to do. Ultimately, I think I was drawn to much-older men in the way Kate Winslet’s character was drawn to the door she clung to when The Titanic went down.

These men had what might be called stability: established careers in impressive, high-status fields, and they lived in civilized apartments (in contrast with my grim walkup, so tiny you could breathe or think; pick one). But, now, looking back through the lens of evolutionary psychology, the attributes that attracted me reflect the evolved female preference for men who can “invest”: provide for a woman and any children they had together.

This priority by women, found across cultures and even species, surely evolved because females (save for seahorses, pipefish, and sea dragons) are the ones who get pregnant and left with babies to feed. Because the perils of single

motherhood weren’t an issue for ancestral men, men evolved to prioritize physical attractiveness. This preference is sneered at as “superficial,” though it’s anything but.

The features men are drawn to — smooth, unblemished skin, lustrous hair, full lips, and youth — are cues to a woman’s health and fertility.

Men who instead had the hots for wrinkly 70-year-old ladies wouldn’t have left any descendants to pass on their biddy-lusty genes.

Across cultures, other characteristics most widely sought in both male and female mates include kindness, intelligence, and good health. Most of us can’t have it all; we have to settle to some degree. But evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Todd Shackelford find that women who are very physically attractive and thus high in mate value wanted all four of a cluster of mate characteristics in a man — those indicating that: 1. He’ll invest. 2. He’ll be a good parent. 3. He’ll be a loving partner. 4. He has good genes to pass on (suggested by his physical health, masculinity, and sexiness).

If you are high in mate value — physically attractive, with other qual-

ities men want in a partner (kindness, intelligence, etc.) — you’ll probably feel less willing to settle. This makes for some challenges. Much-older men can be a bad bet for a number of reasons, including crushing alimony, sperm beyond their prime, and the possibility that you’ll be diapering both a baby and a husband in relatively short order.

Unfortunately, in many younger men, 30 seems to be the new 18.

Financially, the trappings of an adult life (like a house and children) are out of reach for many younger people in a way they weren’t in the past. Also, because casual sex is widely available, younger dudes are in no rush to end the Tinder rando sex parade with an “I do.” Finally, many of this generation grew up helicopter-parented, without the “Be home by dark!” independence of we who grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Many got trophies just for showing up and either weren’t asked to do chores or were allowed to shrug them off. Is it really a shock when a guy doesn’t pop up at 23 brimming with adult responsibility and instead wants to play World of, um, Warcrack all day while you write his resume and cover letters?

Your best bet is probably to look for guys just a bit older — in their late 20s or early 30s — who may not be totally together in their career and finances but show potential.

These are men who are ambitious, intelligent, and hardworking, with reasonable goals (that is, goals that seem realizable without the services of a wizard). Look for signs they care about more than their own immediate comfort and ease — like by noticing when you’re cold and giving you their jacket.

To be fair, there are women with much-older male partners who have happy, satisfying, and maybe even magical relationships. Still, a good general rule might be that a guy’s probably too old for you if, when he was your age, he could’ve called you “baby,” but “3-monthold fetus” would’ve been more medically accurate.
