To our dear students, tomorrow’s leaders

L

ife and history, in the forms of a virus and the largest racial uprisings of your lifetime, have perhaps taught you more in the last 12 weeks than you have learned in our classrooms . . . if you have been paying attention.

Robbed of the opportunity to see you and speak to you face-to-face in times that history books and classes will mark, we, some of your teachers and counselors, hope to reach you now in this time when we cannot remain silent.

All people living through tumultuous times have faced four choices: flee, help, resist, ignore. Do we flee from conflict to find a safe place, abandoning those who suffer around us? Or do we play our part and help in the changes that drive society and history? Do we resist in the face of injustice, even at the risk of suffering? Do we act, engage, change? Or do we ignore injustice and ignorance with excuses of “that’s life,” “life’s not fair,” “that’s how it goes” and “that’s not our problem?”

We are in tumultuous times and our responses have consequences. History judges people by the decisions they make, and history will ask us what we did in these days. We hope that we will then be able to respond proudly of the things we did rather than feel shame at the things we did not do.

Monumental challenges have always existed and the current crisis about race in our nation and the pandemic have exposed them.

Consider that many of us benefit from the inequalities and inequities that plague friends and classmates. Call to mind the representations of peoples from textbooks, the Euro-centric maps, the emphasis on United States’ history through many years of school, the many English language books you read and the few translations, the restrooms that matched your biological gender, the discrepancies in the ethnic make-up of AP, honor and regular classes

as well as school sites. In these, we hope you may begin to recognize how injustice has served some while hurting others and understand the challenge of righting these wrongs.

We, as teachers, recognize that we have come up short. We have not sufficiently looked inward to ourselves, our classrooms and our schools; we have not addressed the inevitable but fatal subconscious biases that infect our practices and our interactions with you, our own shortcomings, our own privilege, our own racism. We have not always engaged in the uncomfortable conversations that must be had. We ask that you join us in an awareness of these personal, societal, and inexcusable shortcomings so as to engage in the difficult and uneasy work of creating positive change.

We must recognize, as Albert Einstein said, that “we cannot solve our problems with the same thinking that created them.”

Our varying reactions to our confinement speak to our personal readiness to step up to the challenges of our times. In the days of isolation, when there was no one there to tell us what to do, some of us pushed ourselves to make something of our day, to do something. We took control.

Others among us, lacking someone to tell us what to do, dismissed our responsibilities to ourselves and our society. No one had expectations of us and so we failed to have expectations for ourselves.

We recognize the burdens and emotions felt in moments of crisis. We acknowledge that we all had reason to stay safe, that the situations were frightening, that we were right to feel danger. Yes, we love you, but we cannot assure you that you will always be safe; we will refrain from telling you that everything is going to be OK; we cannot coddle you and reassure you of things that cannot be reassured. No longer can we hide from you the harshness of our world. We cannot protect you from all things. Instead, we call on you to step up or to reach out, that we might help you step up and that you may help us learn, grow and serve.

How we responded these last weeks is not the final word. Together, we can still and always do better, for we are not today whom

Often, it has been you who have taught us and, often, it was we who were wrong not to listen.

Life and history are change. Your education has not fully prepared you to deal with these changes, but now is the time to demand improvement from all of the many systems that make up your society. As teachers and students, we are part of a system within a system that perpetuates and reinforces inequality, inequity and injustice. We recognize our role in a change that must and can only occur with awareness and dedicated action. We also know that it is not the responsibility of our students or any marginalized or under-represented people to do this work for us. We must do the work in good faith without adding to the burdens of others.

NEWS State mandates face coverings In Brief Applies to all areas of California

ast Thursday, June 18, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a mandate for the public to wear face coverings in every county and city in certain situations (some exemptions apply).

Gov. Gavin Newsom cited the many people opting to not wear face coverings and emphasized that the new mandate is part of the efforts to keep businesses open.

A face covering is defined as a cloth that covers the nose and mouth. Everyone must now wear a face covering in “high-risk” situations, including working in restaurants and around food or members of the public.

Details from the DCPH guidelines: • When inside, or in line to enter any indoor public space; • Obtaining services from the healthcare sector in settings including, but not limited to, a hospital, pharmacy, medical clinic, laboratory, physician or dental office, veterinary clinic or blood bank; • Waiting for or riding on public transportation or paratransit or while in a taxi, private car service or ride-sharing vehicle; • Engaged in work, whether at the workplace or performing work off-site, when: • Interacting in-person with any member of the public; • Working in any space visited by members of the public, regardless of whether anyone from the public is present at the time; • Working in any space where food is prepared or packaged for sale or distribution to others; • Working in or walking through common areas, such as hallways, stairways, elevators and parking facilities; • In any room or enclosed area where other people (except for members of the person’s own household or residence) are present when unable to physically distance; • Driving or operating any public transportation or paratransit vehicle, taxi, or private car service or ride-sharing vehicle when passengers are present.

When no passengers are present, face coverings are strongly recommended.

• While outdoors in public spaces when maintaining a physical distance of 6 feet from persons who are not members of the same household or residence is not feasible.

The following individuals are exempt from wearing a face covering: • Persons age two years or under. Very young children must not wear a face covering because of the risk of suffocation.

• Persons with a medical condition, mental health condition or disability that prevents wearing a face covering. This includes persons with a medical condition for whom wearing a face covering could obstruct breathing or who are unconscious, inc pacitated or otherwise unable to remove a face covering without assistance.

• Persons who are hearing impaired, or communicating with a person who is hearing impaired, where the ability to see the mouth is essential for communication.

• Persons for whom wearing a face covering would create a risk to the person related to their work, as determined by local, state or federal regulators or workplace safety guidelines.

• Persons who are obtaining a service involving the nose or face for which temporary removal of the face covering is necessary to perform the service.

• Persons who are seated at a restaurant or other establishment that offers food or beverage service, while they are eating or drinking, provided that they are able to maintain a distance of at least six feet away from persons who are not members of the same household or residence.

• Persons who are engaged in outdoor work or recreation such as swimming, walking, hiking, bicycling or running, when alone or with household members, and when they are able to maintain a distance of at least six feet from others.

• Persons who are incarcerated. Prisons and jails, as part of their mitigation plans, will have specific guidance on the wearing of face coverings or masks for both inmates and staff.

Note: Persons exempted from wearing a face covering due to a medical condition who are employed in a job involving regular contact with others should wear a non-restrictive alternative, such as a face shield with a drape on the bottom edge, as long as their condition permits it.

Emergency notification bill passes Senate Senate Bill 794, introduced by Sen. Henry Stern (Dist. 27) and Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (Dist. 19), will, if passed by the House and signed by the governor, expand the state’s emergency alert system to ensure local governments can notify the public regarding local emergencies.

“During last year’s power shutoffs, too many vulnerable people and families were not only literally left in the dark, but were also not given ample warning to prepare.

SB 794 will ensure our emergency officials can reach you in these dire moments,” said Stern.

“SB 794 will help ensure all our residents — including those most vulnerable — receive the life-saving information they need in the event of an emergency,” said Jackson.

The bill will allow cities and universities to automatically enroll residents in local emergency alert systems. Opt-out options will be available. Today, residents have to opt in to alert systems. The bill also allows local governments to identify and send specialized alerts to people with particular needs, including disabilities, those who may not speak English, the homeless and those without transportation.

County launches $5,000 grant program for businesses, nonprofits The application process started on Wednesday, June 24 and is open through July 8. Details and application online: www. newsinitiative.withgoogle.com/ training/fellowship-us Zero bail emergency rule ends Effective June 20, the Judicial Council of California voted to end the COVID-19 emergency bail schedule, which allowed bail to be set at zero for many people in order to prevent potential transmission of the coronavirus into local jails.

Eviction and foreclosure rules remain in effect The Judicial Council of California did not vote on rescinding existing eviction and foreclosure emergency rules put in place in the wake of the pandemic.

“After discussions with the governor, legislative leaders and Judicial Council members — as well as hearing from residents with many different viewpoints,” said Tani Cantil-Sakauye, chief justice on the Judicial Council of California, “I have suspended for the time being the vote on the emergency rules

dealing with evictions and judicial foreclosure.”

The lack of a vote means that the eviction and foreclosure rules, limiting landlords’ ability to evict and begin foreclosure procedures, passed during the pandemic remain in effect.

Public Works employees recognized In May, three Ventura County Public Works staff members were recognized as Employee of the Year in three categories.

Kelly Hahs, Sean Hanley and Tony Sheppard were recognized by their fellow employees for their skills and outstanding job performance in three categories, respectively: office, operations and maintenance, and management.

CSUCI campus police ban carotid hold On June 5, the campus police at California State University, Channel Islands, changed their policy to disallow the use of “carotid control hold to restrain a subject, and no officer will receive or participate in trainings that teach this form of control, which involves putting pressure on a person’s neck to control their movement.”

“At CSUCI, we have worked really hard to build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with our community,” said Michael D. Morris, police chief at CSUCI. “But I feel as though the tragic events that have happened around the country require us to do more to ensure we examine our own policies and continue to build trust to ensure that our community feels that we are transparent and responsive to campus needs.”

The action was taken by all 24 CSU campuses to adhere to public safety recommendations made by former President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.

CSUCI reports that the carotid hold has never been used on campus.

Main Street Ventura goes pedestrian Starting on Tuesday, June 16, five blocks of Main Street have been closed to vehicles, allowing pedestrians to walk down the street and facilitate outdoor dining and other activities. Several businesses other than restaurants have extended their shops into the street.

The closure, called “Main Street Moves,” will last for 30 days, through July 16, to determine whether it should be made more permanent.

Blocking off the street was done by using special vehicle barriers from Meridian Rapid Defense Group, which can be moved by one person but will stop trucks or cars attempting to move into the pedestrian area. The barriers are the only ones to be certified by the United States Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act. Businesses must follow guidelines for social distancing and apply through the county for a permit to expand onto public property. Increased hospitalizations return county to state monitoring list

n Tuesday, June 23, Rigoberto Vargas, director of Ventura County Public Health, reported that Ventura County is again on the state’s monitoring list for virus containment — and at risk of having to close businesses — due to the county exceeding the allowed percentage of hospitalizations due to COVID-19.

There is “increased community transmission taking place in the community,” said Vargas, citing 19 new cases that have been traced to a community barbecue at a mobile home park in Oxnard. Contact tracers have

found 40 people who have come into contact with those individuals.

While the county is within the allowed numbers (4.2 percent) for those testing positive, more people are being admitted to the hospital. There have been 51 hospitalizations related to the coronavirus, putting the county at about 20 percent; 10 percent is allowed.

131 new cases were reported in one day on Tuesday, with 195 new cases over the weekend. The number of people in intensive care is also increasing. “That is further concerning,” said Vargas, reporting that 18

people are in the ICU. He said that he thinks the county has plenty of access to ventilators.

Supervisor meeting cleared of members of the public

On Tuesday, June 23, at the public meeting of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Kelly Long, chair of the Ventura County Supervisors, was compelled to clear the hearing room when a member of the public refused to comply with social distancing rules and seating requirements.

Purchasing an efficient, durable water heater, or replacing it with an alternative, can avoid energy waste, solid waste and waste of money in the long run. Maintaining your water heater can save even more money and resources.

One alternative, a solar water heater, is sometimes used to supplement, rather than replace, a water heater.

In Ventura County, since freezing weather is so uncommon, direct circulation systems are viable. Water is simply pumped through solar collectors and heated by the sun, and can then supplement or replace a water heater. Complete replacement with a system from Sunbank Solar, for example, which specializes in online sales, features a 40-gallon solar water heating system for under $3,000.

Tankless water heating systems are another water heater replacement technology. Usually using natural gas, they heat water with intense blasts of energy when hot water is needed, rather than heating water frequently and storing it in a tank, where it gradually cools and requires more energy to re-heat.

Although these substitutes are efficient, most people use conventional water heaters. Choosing an efficient, durable water heater can save energy and reduce solid waste.

When shopping for a water heater,

look for Energy Star certification, indicating the device exceeds minimum standards.

Some devices offer not only efficient design for heating and storing water, but also other conservation features. For example, Ankur Maheshwari, Senior Global Product Manager for Rheem, told me his company’s new ProTerra hybrid electric water heater features two green innovations. First, the ProTerra LeakGuard model has a built-in leak detection system, automatically shutting off to limit water loss from the tank to no more than 20 ounces. It also sends a text alert to notify the homeowner. The second, a heat pump water heater, works “like a refrigerator in reverse,” saving “nearly $500 in annual energy costs compared to standard electric water heaters.” The retail price is approximately $1,300 at Home Depot stores in Ventura County but, if performing as promised, it provides a full return on the additional investment in less than two years.

Water heater maintenance makes a big difference for efficiency and durability. Start with proper installation. Although some water heaters, including the ProTerra, allow zero-clearance installation by placing all service components in front of the unit, most require at least two feet of space for optimal operation.

To optimally maintain any water heater, Maheshwari recommends

draining about a quarter of the tank at least every six months to remove sediment and debris. Turn off the cold water supply, hook up a garden hose to the drain valve, and drain water into a bucket or out a door until water runs clear.

For gas-powered water heaters, check plumbing joints for corrosion.

Check the water supply by turning on a nearby hot water tap and listening for water running. Best practices also include replacing the anode rod every three years and testing the pressure-relief valve (on the top side of the heater) by placing a bucket below the discharge pipe and gently lifting the pressure-relief valve lever.

For both conservation and safety, set your water heater to less than 120 degrees.

To recycle your old water heater, contact the company hauling your residential refuse. Contracts and service are different in each Ventura County city, and some allow refuse haulers to charge for large items. For example, the county’s unincorporated area refuse haulers offer free collections twice per calendar year for bulky items unable to fit into curbside carts. The organization also began the roll out of virtual summer camps, open to Ventura County kids.

n Saturday, June 20, about 200 people gathered around the base of the bronze sculpture of Saint Junipero Serra located in front of Ventura City Hall. Most were there calling for the removal of the statue.

Some wanted it torn down that day, about two dozen people stood around the statue with signs supporting Serra, and others prayed nearby.

The nine-foot bronze statue of Serra was erected in 1989, replacing a cement version that had deteriorated since it was first erected in 1936 with funding from the New Deal. A wooden version stands inside city hall.

Several speakers of Chumash descent spoke about the pain the statue causes and the desire to have it removed through a process involving the Ventura City Council.

Others at the protest spoke about the need to tear it down now, and at one point, after the main protest ended, a speaker said they could take it down that day. A small group of three or four from the crowd rushed the statue.

One person held a black rod or stick and appeared to mean to strike the statue, but did not.

Two Ventura Police Department vehicles arrived on Poli Street, but the officers stood by their cars and observed. The interactions did not escalate further. The officers moved to the north side of Poli and remained standing on the sidewalk, observing the crowd for the remainder of the event.

The action was planned by local youth organizers who started an online petition calling for the statue’s removal.

At press time, the petition has over 6,100 signatures. An opposing petition, to keep the statue in its place, has also been started, with a little over 2,800 signatures as of press time.

“I’m grateful to the local activists and organizers, inspired by national events, for focusing their indignation on the statue of Junipero Serra,” said Matthew Vestuto, tribal member of the Barbareño/Ventureño Band of

Mission Indians (BVBMI). “History won’t be erased by the removal, but history will be made.”

An uneasy history

Serra founded Mission San Buenaventura in 1782. It was one of nine missions he founded during the Spanish occupation of the area. Many consider him the founder of the City of Ventura.

Prior to Spanish colonization, indigenous people had been in the area for at least 10,000 years. Prior to the mission era (1769-1833), while Spain and other empires were exploring the area, multiple indigenous tribes lived on the land.

“When Spain was exploring, it was our land,” said Vestuvo. “Our trade networks were extensive enough that we would have heard what was going on in the south west,” in what is today Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico.

New podcast delves into Camarillo’s past

“Josh” would be Josh McDonald, Reel’s co-host and friend of 30 years, a local musician who almost made it big with the punk band HeyMike! in the early-aughts.

“We got signed to a label in 2003,” McDonald recalls. “They tried to make rock stars out of us. They got close, but they didn’t make it all the way, and I had to get a real job.”

While McDonald was in college in Houston, Reel would sometimes call to tell him about his trips, sending photos and telling stories about them. “And his stories just happen to be better than anybody else’s,” McDonald says. One story involved McDonald’s own family.

“I’m a Dufault . . .The Dufaults have farmland around here. My great grandfather moved out from French Basque territory in the early 20th century. … Dave was able to find the history on it and he sent it to me. That really sparked my interest in local history; it hit me in a personal point.”

Reel already had a small following thanks and wedding magazine Destination I Do to The David Reel Show, a podcast available on his website, davidreelwrites. com, in which Reel dishes with guests about news, life, culture and everything in between. Facebook discussions around the historical images, however, made Reel realize that the local public was hungry for stories related to Ventura County’s past — and inspired the development of Hyperlocal Camarillo.

The aptly named Hyperlocal Camarillo will tell the story of this city: the people who lived here, the events that shaped it, even the less savory characters who left their mark.

The podcast sprang largely from the mind of local historian and author David Reel.

“I’ve always been interested in history, but specifically local history,” explains Reel.

Reel has made a name for himself through the power of social media. For the past 7-8

“We’ve got the Oxnard Plain in the can, that’s how floods shaped California and the agricultural industry,” Reel says. “We’ve recorded Rancho Calleguas, and that traces back to the transportation system to getting the agriculture out of the county and the state and the country internationally.

Back in 2006, the Dears made an album in Gang Of Losers that sounded like a more soulful, dynamic — and just plain better — version of Coldplay. Since then, the Dears have had a few lineup changes, but have continued to release solid and ambitious albums on a steady basis, but they didn’t quite recapture the magic and the thrill of Gang Of Losers. But with Lovers Rock, the Dears have come closer than ever to recreating the sound and spirit of that 2006 classic. Lovers Rock opens on an auspicious note with “Heart of an Animal,” which rocks briskly and also boasts a rich vocal melody that takes the song to the next level.

“The Worst In Us” and “No Place On Earth” are two punchy rockers that rise to impressive crescendos. The new album also has its share of mid-tempo material, a musical setting that has produced some of the Dears’ most compelling songs. One track in that class is “Instant Nightmare!,” an orchestrated epic with a rocking edge and melodic vocal (sung effectively

by Murray Lightburn’s wife and long-time Dears keyboardist Natalia Yanchak). Still, nothing on the new album quite hits the heights of Gang Of Losers (whose songs “Death or Life We Want You” and “Bandwagoneers” were absolute stunners).

But Lovers Rock is an excellent outing that re-establishes the Dears as a band capable at any point of making an album-ofthe-year classic.

On “Ghosthunting,” the second song on Shortly After Takeoff, Brian Christinzio (aka BC Camplight) opens with a faux stand-up comedy bit that leads into this epic orchestral-laced track. It’s a pretty blatant signal that humor is going to be part of the charm of this fifth album from Christinzio. It’s a good thing that element is present, considering Shortly After Takeoff is a third album in a trilogy inspired by Christinzio’s ongoing battle with mental illness, which took a turn for the worse after his father died shortly before he started work on this album. Sometimes, the humor — usually of the dark variety — is suggested just in the titles to songs like “I Want to Be in the Mafia” or “I Only Drink When I’m Drunk.” Other songs, such as “Back To Work” and “Arm Around Your Sadness,” sneak in some zingers that leaven the more serious and unsettling thoughts explored in those songs. Musically, Shortly After Takeoff is all over the place, which fits the mental chaos embodied in the lyrics.

Most of the songs fall into the synth/electronic pop arena, but it’s unfair to try to categorize Christinzio’s music beyond noting he has a talent for writing rich, accessible melodies.

Obviously, one sympathizes with Christinzio for the turmoil he experienced as he created Shortly After Takeoff, but out of it, he managed to make a compelling and entertaining work that’s as unique as any album you’ll hear this year.

On her fourth album, Rose has set aside a bit of the retro country and pop feel of her earlier albums. (After all, she covered “There’s a Tear in My Beer” and “Be My Baby” on her 2015 album, Heartbreaker of the Year — two songs that provided templates for the styles of her original songs.) That’s not to say Rose doesn’t still show some ‘50s/’60s influences on We Still Go to Rodeos. But the frisky and highly tuneful rockers “In A Rut” and “I’d Rather Be Alone,” as well as the simmering bluesy track “You’d Blame Me For The Rain” and folky acoustic number “Don’t Give Up On Me,” aren’t so obvious with the retro touches. The move away from retro stylings was wise, as that element could have started to feel gimmicky. With the varied and more timeless sound on We Still Go to Rodeos, Rose’s talents as a songwriter and singer shine brightly and don’t get overshadowed by style.

The duo’s second album is made up mostly of edgy poprock tunes filled with multiple hooks, pithy lyrics — much like the well received 2017 Diet Cig debut effort, Swear I’m Good At This. The Diet Cig sound is nothing original; the duo can easily be compared to the likes of Veruca Salt, Paramore or any number of other female-fronted pop-rock acts. But the new album affirms that Diet Cig’s Alex Luciano and Noah Bowman write catchier tunes than most of their peers, while erasing any worries about a sophomore slump.

As the album title might suggest, there’s some gospel in Deck’s music. There’s also plenty of soul, some blues and country, all filtered into a collection of songs that range from rousing romps to emotional ballads. Deck does each of these styles with authenticity, and his versatility and songwriting chops make Bully Pulpit a wellrounded effort.

Our son chose and enjoyed a similar combo, with chicken taquitos in place of the tostada, while my wife had the Tacos Mr. Pancho, two soft-shelled corn tortillas filled with grilled filet of sole, tomato, onion, cilantro, shredded cabbage and chipotle ranch sauce ($15). We also ordered a liter of pre-mixed margaritas, cold and ready to pour __________________________ at home (just add ice and salt, if desired).

The menu was created principally by now-retired chef-owner Jorge Lopez, who started the original Money Pancho 45 years ago in Guadalajara City and opened the Camarillo location in 1998. Specialties are grouped by region (Jalisco, Puebla and Guadalajara) and there are also seafood, salads, soups, appetizers and a la carte choices. The all-you-caneat brunch buffet is once again available Sundays at the Camarillo site for $21.

We’re trying to serve our community, especially those who’ve supported us for so long. And we’ve been holding the line on prices, and not taking advantage of the situation.”

Such loyalty is appreciated by customers like us, who have missed Money Pancho’s friendly, homey atmosphere, starting with the welcoming smile of Jorge Lopez himself who, like his wife, loves to keep busy at the restaurant, even in retirement.

“My folks enjoy greeting people and being active,” smiles Claudia.

I started dating someone who is super close to his family (talks to his mom and/or dad daily, sometimes multiple times). I have a perfectly good relationship with my family, but we talk a few times a month, not a few times a day!

I’m uneasy that being in a relationship with him will mean being in an intense relationship with his family, too. Should I be worried about dating someone so tied to his mom as an adult?

Starting in the late ‘80s, childhood became like jail, with children no

longer being allowed out to explore and instead incarcerated in fenced-in play dates. This came out of “helicopter parenting,” named for parents overprotectively hovering over their kids, supervising every aspect of their lives. Helicopter parents remain in constant communication with their kids (including their adult kids), making their decisions for them, clearing obstacles out of their path, and trying to micromanage their children into Harvard and the “right” career, spouse, house, and all the rest.

When you have constant adult supervision, and your mistakes are magically mopped up by Mom (like by calling your boss for you — which, yes, really happens), you get shorted on the normal developmental challenges that create a psychologically healthy, independent adult. Not surprisingly, research by interpersonal communications researcher Kelly Odenweller and her colleagues suggests helicopter parenting leads to adult children with “neurotic tendencies, dependency on others, and ineffective coping skills.”

Look at how your boyfriend responds to conflict, and assess whether you’ve got a psychologically

handicapped adult baby on your hands or merely a guy who really likes and enjoys his parents. That said, even if it’s the latter, it might not work for you. Talk to him to suss out what sort of role his family would have in your lives. For example: What would be expected of you? Would you need to go to every single event with his family? If you got a job across the country, would moving be out of the question?

Upon investigation, figure out what you’d be comfortable with. You may decide his level of involvement with his family doesn’t work for you, and that doesn’t make you a bad person or “wrong.” It just makes you the wrong person for him. However, talking this out now could help you see whether there are compromises you two could live with (same as you might do if he were intensely into a hobby that you find intensely tedious). Maybe you’ll always be a little “Disturbed” about his level of engagement with his family, but maybe you can work things out so his parents are involved in your life together...but not on the level of intestinal polyps.

It’s Not You. It’s Meh.

In the first few weeks of seeing this

new guy, I was really into him and wanted to spend all my time with him.

We’ve now been together for three months. For the first time for me in a relationship, I’m okay with being apart from a boyfriend. (Normally, I get insecure and upset.) Maybe this is good, but it worries me. If you don’t really miss someone when you aren’t together, does that mean you don’t love them?

It’s possible you mistook the initial excitement of the relationship for having the hots for this guy, in bed and as a person. Elevated dopamine plays a role in this. It’s a neurotransmitter -- a chemical messenger -- that drives wanting and seeking.

Neuroscientist Wolfram Schultz finds that “unpredictable rewards” -- seemingly rewarding things we have yet to experience -- may be even three or four times as exciting (that is, dopamine-elevating) as those we’re used to. However, expecting something to be exciting and having it

fall short, failing to match our prediction, causes dopamine levels to sag. We experience less wanting and have diminished motivation to pursue it – in other words, the neurochemical expression of “meh.”

Give a hard look at whether this guy hits the marks for you. At the same time, consider whether you missed past boyfriends more because there was something missing in you.

(When you develop emotional security, you’re able to be alone without feeling alone.) If you decide he’s worth keeping, remember that romantic partners need to feel loved, even if you don’t need them desperately.
