group of Ventura area residents are mobilizing to push back against a show of white supremacist sentiments by removing posters and stickers that are being put up in parts of Ventura.

Nicolette Walker, 36 of Ojai, participates in the social media group Ojai For Justice and coordinates with the groups SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) Ventura County and Black Lives Matter Ventura County. She has pulled down numerous posters and stickers and contributes to a Google map the group uses to track where the propaganda is put up.

They try to get them removed as quickly as possible.

Walker says the images are “mostly concentrated in downtown Ventura . . . the Westside and up and down Victoria, also around the college . . . it is straight up white nationalism, white supremacy. It’s in your face, the red and white lettering, it’s triggering and distracting from the actual message of these movements which are based in nonviolence and equity for all people.”

According to minutes of the Ventura College Area Community Council meeting from March 24, Commander Rick Murray with the Ventura Police Department said that VPD was receiving reports of the white supremacist posters and stickers. He reported that 90 stickers had been removed from Telegraph Road between the college and midtown.

One of the items is a poster depicting Ashli Babbitt, the woman shot and killed by U.S. Capitol Police during the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. One image is a graphic depiction of her face with the dome of the capitol building in the background and the other is a photograph of Babbitt; both include the hashtag #SayHerName.

“It’s inappropriate to use that hashtag for a white woman who’s definitely not a martyr for justice,” said Walker.

“The murder rate of black women is twice as high [as that] of white women. They make up 13% of the population, but make up 20-30% of killings by police.”

The sticker, which resembles a bumper sticker, reads “White Lives Matter” in a font that mimics “death metal band lettering,” usually with red letters outlined in black on a white background. According to Walker, “They keep changing the font, it’s getting harder to read.” The first version resembled the Coca-Cola font.

A third poster just has a quote by a right wing comedian in black and white lettering. “His name is at the bottom. It’s vague enough that it makes you Google it, that’s part of the tactic, you begin your journey down the rabbit hole, watching videos, reading articles, being indoctrinated to this way of thinking,” explained Walker.

posts and other surfaces along the roads.

Walker noted that SURJ and Ojai for Justice have chosen not to share the images for further public viewing, explaining that doing so would result in “more eyes on it” which many believe would further the goals of the people putting them up. [The Ventura County Reporter has verified their content, but is opting to not reprint or otherwise distribute images of these posters and stickers.]

The group has also heard reports of white supremacist groups recruiting outside of a midtown Ventura apartment building.

“I’m wanting our community to stand up for each other, especially white people to stand up and say this is not ok,” said Walker.

She is most troubled by the hashtag on the posters of Babbitt’s likeness. “#SayHerName started in 2014. It was created by the African American Policy Forum . . . to draw attention to police violence towards Black women, violence that Black women face.” Walker points out the work of Kimberlé Crenshaw, an attorney and Black activist who coined the term intersectionality. The #SayHerName campaign is about the “intersection between race, gender, sex and gender-based violence.” The campaign and Crenshaw’s work are rooted in exposing the “police killings of Black women that can go unnoticed in the shadow of shootings of Black men, which are getting most of the coverage.”

An example is George Floyd, who was killed in May 2020. Walker notes that, “After that there was outrage around the death of Breonna Taylor. She was killed in March, before Floyd. It took another killing, this time of a Black man, to call attention to her killing months before.”

Walker called the Babbitt posters “a deliberate attempt to distract and co-opt . . . a movement for Black women . . . They try to make [Babbitt] into a martyr, when she’s a traitor.”

Walker said she’s passionate about “equity and racial justice. I feel like a lot of the time people who are in this work want to focus on all the things that are going on nationally. It’s also really important to look at what’s going on locally. I want everyone in Ventura County to feel safe and welcome and not feel traumatized when they come out of their house.”

n June 3, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) heard over two hours of public comment from 47 residents and organizations from across Ventura County in opposition to Southern California Gas Company’s (SoCal Gas) plan to expand a natural gas-methane compressor site across from E.P. Foster Elementary School in West Ventura.

“We cannot treat children as collateral damage for industry,” said Vera Long of Ojai, a former firefighter and teacher, during public comment at the CPUC. “Especially when there is a clean energy solution.”

“How many of you would send your kids to E.P. Foster knowing this?” asked Isba Silva, a resident of West Ventura and mother of two children who will be attending the school in the fall. “I don’t have the means to move my kids to another school at this time . . . Our kids deserve to go to school with clean air.”

Calling the project part of “modernizing” the facility, SoCal Gas states the company needs to upgrade the decades-old facility with equipment that will increase capacity to push gas north through the system because of decreases in gas production in Santa Barbara County. According to the company, this has increased the need for more gas from the Ventura Oil Field to be pumped over a longer distance up the network to meet the ongoing demand for gas in that area.

Alex Edgar, a senior at Royal High School in Simi Valley, spoke in opposition to the expansion plan, calling it “unethical” to increase the health risk in a densely populated area.

Members of the CPUC are appointed by the state governor and the agency is responsible for overseeing public services and utilities as well as protecting consumers and the environment. Part of the role of the CPUC has been to ensure the state has adequate infrastructure to ensure a stable energy supply to customers.

The public outcry focuses on air quality degradation, health impacts and other risks

related to the site being so close to a school and the Boys and Girls Club, and in the middle of a residential neighborhood. At one of the recently held public meetings held by SoCal Gas after public pressure was mounting, an official said they could not think of another facility like this in the state positioned so close to a school and residents.

The expansion plan is likely to “increase health issues,” in a “predominantly BIPOC working class community,” said Liz Lamar, an Oxnard resident and board member of the Los Padres Chapter of the Sierra Club.

The residents of that community “should not have to face yet another burden like this while SoCal Gas makes millions benefiting from the expansion . . . gas is dead. It’s dead energy. The future is electric.”

Lamar and others asked the CPUC to not allow any more expansions of fossil fuelbased energy sources, citing climate change and the need to move to renewable energy sources. Speakers also called for an Environmental Impact Report as part of the project.

“Even a botanical garden in our area had to do an EIR,” said Tomás Rebecchi, a West Ventura resident and senior organizer with Food and Water Watch.

Liz Beall, executive director of Ventura-based Climate First: Replacing Oil and Gas (CFROG), highlighted information about the negative health impacts of living near natural gas facilities on young children, stating that it “is well known, so the fact that this compressor station is placed across from an elementary school and the Boys and Girls Club means that the pollution burden experienced by this community [is] extra extra high . . . that’s the long history of environmental racism in Ventura . . . it’s time for that practice to come to an end.”

o catch people unlawfully dumping garbage along roadways during the past year, the Ventura County Public Works Agency installed motion-activated, hidden cameras in strategic locations along rural roads. The cameras upload images to the Internet and send incriminating evidence of people dumping, showing their vehicle and license plates to county staff. In response, the Public Works Agency files a police report which is then investigated by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. In most cases a citation is issued, and the responsible party is required to appear in court.

Steve Mattern, an environmental specialist with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, has assisted prosecutors in handling complaints against six illegal dumpers since the cameras were installed.

The complaints charged the defendants for violating an anti-dumping ordinance.

Although just a misdemeanor in most cases, consequences are serious. The court holds defendants responsible for restitution to the county of Ventura. To investigate, sheriff’s deputies come to the homes of

ca.gov/tires/haulers/.

Calling your regular refuse hauler is also a good first resort because mattresses, sofas and other bulky items too big to fit into regular curbside carts will often be collected free.

Waste haulers’ contracts with cities or the county generally require them to accept two to four bulky items per year from each home free of charge. In some cities, residents are allowed two separate collection days, while in most areas outside cities, contracts specify up to two items on a single visit once per year.

Community cleanup days are another way to conveniently discard bulky items without cost. Although the program was suspended during the pandemic, most city and county contracts with haulers require haulers to provide annual events where residents can drop off material for free. In the city of Oxnard, neighborhood groups request this service and arrange for bins on their street.

In other areas, city or county staff rent a church, park or school parking lot for several hours on a Saturday and send fliers to the surrounding neighborhood, notifying residents of the opportunity.

Despite this enforcement, illegal dumping continues. In 2020, public works crews and contractors collected 278 mattresses illegally dumped along county roads, according to Anitha Balan, deputy director of operations and maintenance with Ventura County Roads and Transportation. In this case, dumping may be partly due to lack of information. Perhaps those who dumped would have brought their mattresses to a mattress recycling dropoff site if they had known mattresses may be dropped off free at four locations in Ventura County. Sometimes illegal dumping is done by individuals trying to make a quick buck by using their truck to haul for others. You can prevent illegal dumping by hiring only legal haulers. The company collecting your residential refuse is the one you should call for bulky item disposal as well. For tires, choose a registered waste tire hauler at the CalRecycle website, www.calrecycle.

This program will resume soon, and in the meantime, waste service customers in some areas have been mailed passes for use of the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center or a transfer station sending material to the landfill. The three east county cities have long had such an arrangement with the Simi Landfill, which accepts material free of charge from their residents on specified days.

Rather than dispose at all, if you have an item to discard, consider whether someone else might want it. Listing items free on craigslist, Pennysaver or Freecycle often leads to free collection of discards.

If you see illegal dumping, avoid confrontation to avoid violence, but make a note of the license plate number and the dumper’s appearance and vehicle type, then contact the non-emergency number of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department at 805-654-9511.

With home prices back up again, ignoring this “hidden wealth” may prove to be short sighted when looking for the best long-term outcome.

All things considered, it’s not surprising that more than a million homeowners have already used a government-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) loan to turn their home equity into extra cash for retirement.

“The future of building” Ondulando post-fire rebuild goes modular

I

n the mid-afternoon of May 27, the homeowner* of a house on Via Cielito in the Ondulando neighborhood did a walk-through of their new home. Just five hours before, only a finished foundation was in the location from which they now surveyed the view out the glass slider from the master bedroom.

The original home, which they had lived in for 30 years, was claimed in a matter of hours by the Thomas Fire in 2017. Remarkably, the new home was situated in place — albeit not fully ready to be occupied — with similar rapidity, thanks to the ingenuity of the construction company and the modular design of the home.

The project could point the way forward for other rebuilds, particularly in areas ravaged by wildfires.

Ventura’s Ondulando neighborhood was hit hard by the Thomas Fire, which skipped and jumped across the canyons, claiming some homes and leaving others. Today, there are still many empty, flat lots. On some properties a masonry fireplace or empty pool are all that remain, waiting for rebuilding The final section is placed. to begin or a buyer. Others are simply in insurance claim and/or permitting limbo.

On Via Cielito where this project took shape, a neighboring home had sold and was slated to change hands on the day of the Thomas Fire. The furniture had been moved out. Today an outdoor fireplace and seating area are all that remain. The property provided an ideal vantage point to watch the enormous crane place four sections of a modular home into place.

“We’ll have the house watertight by the end of the day,” said Rodney Tate of Camarillo-based Tate Construction and Development. Tate served as the subcontractor in charge of placing the four modular home sections in place upon the built foundation.

Martin Prideaux, of Oak View-based MPX Construction, is the general contractor for the build and met the homeowner shortly after the fire. Following issues with architects and a “low ball” budget from the insurance company (which would not cover the rebuild) Prideaux persuaded the homeowner to go modular.

Tate said he’s done several modular home placements in Ventura County, including some in the same neighborhood. He says it’s really a better way to build a house. Traditional construction means that a home in the process of being built is “exposed” to the elements during construction. A home built inside a factory is protected during all phases, and doesn’t see the light of day until the roof is finished.

The home selected came from Redlands-based Hallmark-Southwest, which was recently purchased by Dvele, a company that has built at least one other modular home in the Ondulando neighborhood.

From foundation to walk-through in a day Modular homes are built in sections. Each section is constructed on and bolted to a steel frame, which is also the transport trailer. Once sections have been transported to the build location, steel straps from the crane are put in place and the bolts are removed.

The Via Cielito modular home is different from the one that was lost. Whereas the previous house was two stories, the new home is single story and about 100 square feet smaller, at 2,170 square feet, with a 480-square-foot garage plus a storage-wine cellar. The new home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms with a powder room.

Prideaux’s company built the foundation for the four-section modular home. It will also build a custom garage and front porch sitting area, and install custom flooring and custom tile showers. Smooth stucco and decorative hardscape features will be placed on the exterior.

The placement of a modular home requires a dedicated

crew and careful coordination.

On the day of installation, the crane arrived at around 7 a.m. and was operating two hours later, after being leveled and properly braced. Large round platforms were placed under each foot of the crane for stabilization.

The operator, called the pilot, of the crane communicated closely with his team member on the ground who spoke into a small handheld transmitter, giving specific instructions on first lifting the modular home section off the trailer it arrived on, and then moving the section into place. As the section lifted off the trailer, the crane slowly rotated, and ground crew members held lines attached to corners of the section. Precise directions were relayed to the pilot to ensure the section remained balanced, and lined up perfectly. Large metal levers helped shimmy it into place.

The section containing the kitchen and living room was the largest, weighing in at 25,000 pounds.

As the crane lifted it, the pilot was quickly told to stop.

Tate’s crew went to work shifting some rolls of carpeting and carpet padding from the middle of the section to the end opposite the kitchen to try and counterbalance the kitchen.

More weight was still needed, however, so buckets of heavy material were grabbed from the site and placed in the living room. After resetting the straps, the section was properly balanced and could be moved and placed on its foundation.

The only other hiccup of the day was when the final section didn’t seem to want to detach from its metal trailer frame. The crew checked for any steel bolts still attached to the trailer.

Finding none, the pilot was instructed to slowly lift. It came off with a gentle pop.

The home isn’t completely finished. Tate explained that the crew will return to attach the sections to the foundation, and will make adjustments as needed for precise placement and to minimize any gaps. The largest visible gap during the first walk through was approximately 0.75 inches between the floors of the sections.

The homeowner seemed pleased but guarded with their new home during the walk-through. It can be overwhelming for the structure to take shape after waiting so long.

Permits and financing Prideaux describes the permitting process with the city of Ventura as 3 ½ years of “jumping through hoops,” which caused the built home to sit for a year in the factory in Redlands. According to Prideaux, discrepancies between local and state permitting requirements also caused confusion. The manufacturer of the home gets the plans approved by the state but then the local entity, in this case the city of Ventura, has to issue the local building permits.

Prideaux said the process “changed dramatically” after the fires and the city seemed “overwhelmed.” Then the pandemic hit. He added that all manufactured homes are built to the same building codes as homes built onsite.

At this point the Via Cielito modular house itself is signed off already. A city inspector will only need to sign off on the garage that will be built.

When asked about the length of permitting time with the city, Prideaux said it seemed that “they weren’t sure what the state regulations were, but the state overrules the city.”

With the garage and front entry being constructed on site, “we have to get a second’’ and separate approval “for that, then combine them all.” He said the city seems to be starting to “loosen up” with processing modular homes, which to him makes sense. Two sets of plans had to be created for the state and the city. “They are built the same way as a regular house, two-by-fours and two-by-sixes, joists . . . it’s strong.”

Prideaux was impressed to not see any cracks or other signs of shifting from transport.

He had never done a modular home of this type before and wondered “can I pull this off? . . . I’d never done one before but had seen the modular homes . . . They are built like a regular house, all wood . . . I thought, ‘let’s give it a go.’ To frame this now it would cost me $500-$600 a square foot to finish.”

The sections were delivered the day before the crane arrived and the cost for transport, including a police escort for the wide loads, was $15,000. Prideaux estimated that by 10 —

going with a modular construction, he was able to save the homeowner about $300,000 to $400,000. The finished cost of the house as designed will be $900,000.

“The cost of materials went up about 120%. If I had to build this [with traditional onsite construction] it would be around $1.3-$1.4 million,” said Prideaux.

The lower cost, said Prideaux, is due partly to the cost of factory labor. He said they can pay minimum wage because in the factory they are cutting blocks of wood. “Out in the field they are carpenters, there is a cost difference.”

Modular building normalized Every industry experiences changes with shifts in technology and consumer demand. The building trades are no different. Modular home construction has been knocking on the door of the residential construction industry for a while now, and some market areas have been resistant. But this type of building saw an uptick in Ventura County in the aftermath of the Thomas Fire.

The burst of post-Thomas rebuilds caused a strain on supply chains (compounded by the pandemic), a boom in the construction industry and a backlog in planning departments as permit requests came rolling in. This coupled with the state mandates for cities and counties to have ample housing to meet demand means that now might be the time for homeowners, builders and permit departments to iron out any kinks in the permitting system to incorporate all housing options and building processes into the mix.

When asked if there is resistance in the construction trade to this type of building, Prideaux said yes, there “sort of is resistance. People have a bad taste in their mouth” around modular homes. Some think they are ugly. Others worry that they’ll resemble mobile homes in a trailer park. But Prideaux thinks that stigma can change: Modular homes are in fact being custom designed for the homeowner and the attractive final product is changing the way people, and cities, view modular construction.

The final section of the modular home is lifted from the trailer on Via Cielito. May 27, 2021.

“This may be the future of building,” he stated.

Prideaux worked with the homeowner to customize the design and add various features, including solar tubes, to increase natural light, high-end granite countertops and a seethrough double-sided fireplace between the living room and the backyard area. The rooms are spacious and several arched entryways added to the custom feel. Even at the unfinished phase, the home does not feel cookie cutter.

Within a stone’s throw on the same street, six homes had been claimed by Thomas. Three have been rebuilt. Two, including the neighboring home, are still flat lots. A home just across the street is under construction and nearly fully framed.

In the time it took the modular home to go from a completed foundation to walk-through, the roof trusses across the street were delivered and about half nailed into place.

Prideaux estimated that the rebuild across the street would need another 10 months to get it to where the modular build is today. That home still needs to be plumbed, wired, insulated; walls inside and out finished; and windows, floors, surfaces, finishes and fixtures installed.

The modular home needs about three more months, said Prideaux, to be move-in ready. Tile, carpeting and fixtures, like faucets, still need to be installed. But the master bathtub was in place and looked inviting. If the permitting process had gone more smoothly, the modular home would have taken a total of about five to six months from grading to move in.

Is modular building faster?

According to Peter Gilli, community development director for the city of Ventura, three Thomas Fire rebuilds in city limits have been for “modular or prefab homes.”

He pointed out in a June 7 email to the Ventura County Reporter that even with this type of construction, “all work related to the site, grading and foundation remains. And for properties with topography, which most of the Thomas Fire rebuild sites have, the site engineering is often more time consuming than the plan review of the house itself.”

“A house being designed for a site can often be easier to work into a site with topography than a pre-designed home,” Gilli continued. “An architect can be more flexible with the house to meet site constraints. A pre-designed home is what it is.”

When asked about changes to permits following massive wildfires, as mentioned by Prideaux, Gilli noted that this is an additional step requiring a state review for homes being rebuilt in high-fire areas.

In a review of city records, Gilli stated that the three modular/prefab Thomas Fire rebuilds took eight months, nine months and 18 months from “submittal date to permit issuance.” After the city provides comments on the design to the architect, it’s typical for a response from the architect to take several more months.

“Based on our information, the time frame for modular or prefab is not longer than usual,” said Gilli. “The issue is likely that owners went into doing a modular or prefab thinking it would be faster.”

As for this project being faster and less expensive than traditional onsite construction, the homeowner said that remains to be seen. *The homeowner gave permission to photograph the construction and otherwise describe the process but wished to remain anonymous.

Sheriff sends helicopter to help suicidal person

On June 1 at approximately 3 p.m., the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office deployed a helicopter to the vicinity over Shelf Road trail in Ojai in response to a suicidal woman the team was trying to “coax” out into the open in order to assist the person.

The helicopter was circling somewhat low, and residents in the neighborhoods below could hear a loudspeaker announcement stating “This is a Ventura County Helicopter...please move down along the trail.” At about 3:30 p.m. the helicopter made one more circling of the area and then moved quickly toward the East End of the valley.

Later a spokesperson with the VCSO reported the person was in fact a teen boy, was not suicidal and returned home safely.

Evacuation alert alarm on Ventura Police cars

Ventura Police Department patrol vehicles are newly equipped with a “hilo” siren that will be used in the event residents are asked to evacuate due to an emergency causing an immediate threat to life.

The sound is noticeably different from the typical police siren, and is reminiscent of the European police siren, alternating between two different tones.

Surfrider focusing on Rincon Parkway

Due to advocacy work by the Ventura County Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, the county is creating an improvement plan for the Rincon coastal area.

The plan will include upgrades to the day use parking area, lidded trash bins and signage, and will include an educational “leave no trace” campaign.

The program was supported by Ventura County Supervisor Matt LaVere (Dist. 1) and Ventura County Parks.

Ventura’s styrofoam ban in effect on July 1

Last October the Ventura City Council voted unanimously to ban the use of styrofoam (expanded polystyrene, or EPS) by any food provider. The ordinance goes into effect on July 1, 2021.

Any business that sells food or beverages for consumption is prohibited

from using products made of styrofoam.

Ordinance No. 2020-025 allows for a one-year exemption for businesses that will be overly burdened by the change.

Ojai hires former police chief to consult on contract review

Scott Whitney, former chief of the Oxnard Police Department, is the principal consultant for Calseco.

Thousand Oaks gets life support squad

As of May 30 the city of Thousand Oaks has had an Advanced Life Support Squad vehicle providing critical patient care as needed. The squad includes two firefighters/paramedics and is part of the Ventura County Fire Department.

The squad was approved by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors due to a reported increased demand through the 911 system.

Westlake Village man facing federal drug charges

In May the United States Department of Justice reported that Bradley Shepley, 35 of Westlake Village, was indicted on federal charges related to an alleged conspiracy to distribute heroin to a 26-year-old resident of Oak Park, who then died of a heroin overdose on Nov. 6, 2017. This is one of 11 cases brought by federal authorities related to drug dealers being charged in relation to fatal overdoses Shepley, who is being held without bail and has pleaded not guilty, was previously convicted of two felony narcotics charges. If convicted on this third charge, Shepley would face a mandatory minimum sentence of life in federal prison without parole.

Trial in this matter is set for Nov. 2 in Los Angeles Superior Court. It is being investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Keith D. Ellison with the International Narcotics, Money Laundering and Racketeering section.

Next, on June 13 in Oakbrook Park, the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra performs Antonin Dvorak’s “From the New World” and Leos Janacek’s “Idyll Suite” in a program that will “intrigue children and adults alike.”

he Mark, recently opened in Old Town Camarillo, is a new development concept built around “eat, drink and live.” The complex includes food and beverage vendors below and chic apartments above, giving residents nearly effortless access to dining options just steps from their front doors. A location in the heart of charming Old Town, with an art center, wine bar, shops and restaurants a short walk away, doesn’t hurt, either!

I recently popped into the food hall — a large open space, similar to the Annex in The Collection at Riverpark — to grab some ice cream at Rori’s Artisanal Creamery. Topa Topa Brewing Co. is there, too. But the first thing I noticed when I entered was the scent of pizza. Intrigued, I followed my nose to Freda’s Woodfired Kitchen.

I immediately knew what we were having for dinner that night.

“Kitchen” is in the name, but pizza is the main game here. There are New York-style pies, with chewy crusts surrounded by a thick perimeter you can get your hands on. The other option is a thinner, crispier brick-oven pizza (think Neapolitan style). Both come in a variety of gourmet options, such as spinach with roasted onions, speck with arugula, smoked salmon and potato and bacon, but there are classics like pepperoni and Margherita, too.

I placed a to-go order that I figured would satisfy everyone in our household: a New Yorkstyle pepperoni, a spicy brick-oven El Diablo,

and a brick-oven white pizza (sauceless) with (Migraines) mushrooms and truffle oil. I sat outside on The Mark’s spacious, comfortable patio and ate ice cream while I waited. I had been told to come (Tinnitus) back in 15-20 minutes, but the kind person behind the Freda’s counter delivered my pizzas to me at the table. Not sure if that’s the usual order of business, but I appreciated it.

My life has gone on, but I often think of what he did to me and feel incredible anger. I’d like to forgive him, but I’m not sure how to do that when these feelings pop up throughout my week.

give the guy. There’s this assumption that forgiving someone who’s wronged you is the healthy, constructive thing to do — and, sure, it can be. Evolutionary social psychologist Michael McCullough defines forgiveness as “an internal process of getting over your ill will for an offender.” He explains that forgiveness is “adaptive” — functional, beneficial — when there’s a valuable relationship at stake: when you’d benefit from continuing contact with the perp (and it seems unlikely they’ll be a repeat offender — harm you again in a similar way).

But you aren’t looking to re-up with the guy! And you probably have zero indication he’s changed anything — aside from which woman he’s two-timing (or, uh, 22-timing, as a rough quarterly estimate). What you’re really seeking is peace of mind. Consider that anger, like forgiveness, can be functional.

The anger you still have probably remains for a reason: a warning sign that you’re in danger of being cheated on again. But there’s a way to shut off that alert — and protect yourself in the future — and it’s by turning this into a learning experience.

Be accountable for the part you played in what happened — not because, “Yay, blame the victim!” — but because it’s the part you can control. Did you, perhaps, want so badly to believe you’d found love that you ignored signs you’d landed a cheating creep posing as an adoring boyfriend? Being honest about what you could — and should — have done differently can become your guide for what you will do differently the next guy around. A man can give you the sense he has a moral compass, but it’s best you give it a hard look to see it isn’t cracked and dusty from constantly being dropped in other women’s bedrooms.

Still, many men eventually tire of the swipe-right hussy of the night lifestyle (which, admittedly, isn’t an option for men low on the mate-value ladder) and start feeling ready for a relationship. However, even if this guy’s open to commitment and maybe already pointed in that direction, consider the lesson from “psy-

chological reactance,” a term coined by psychologist Jack Brehm. Our getting the sense that somebody’s trying to control us, limit our freedom, motivates us to “react”: rebel against being controlled.

Give yourself a (silent) deadline so you won’t be waiting around forever, and then ask him how he sees things going forward: what he’s looking for, what works for him. The conversation itself should give him the sense that you might be headed for the door if he doesn’t boyfriend up. Wanting to be with you might motivate him to make the necessary sexual trade-off — which is ultimately a pretty big deal for a dude. Picture the Souplantation buffet, but all those stainless steel bins are filled with the same one item, and you’ll have to eat it for every meal for the rest of your life: “Welcome to the suburban gulag.
