2020 Ventura County Fair cancelled “This is the most heartbreaking decision I’ve ever had to make”

n a unanimous vote on May 4, the Board of the Ventura County Fairgrounds has cancelled the 2020 Ventura County Fair due to state and public safety orders in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is the most heartbreaking decision I’ve ever had to make,” said Barbara Quaid, CEO of the Ventura County Fairgrounds. She felt compelled to make this recommendation due to economic and logistical challenges related to complying with social distancing and sanitizing requirements for food service and other activities.

Two other fairs in the region, Orange County and Del Mar, have also been cancelled. Events such as these draw carnival rides and other vendors from out of state. If the Ventura County Fair were the only one to go forward, Quaid said that she was not sure how that would impact concessionaires, who would now be

coming for just a single event.

She and Board Chair Leslie Cornejo reported that they were on a call with state officials last Monday who told them that mass gatherings will be the last thing to come back.

“They are trying not to mandate [fair closures],” said Cornejo. They are “trying to give us our individual right to decide and telling us we must be patient.” She said Karen Ross, secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, told fair operators that loosening restrictions on mass gatherings will come in a “long while.”

During public comment, Alex Flores, Future Farmers of America advisor for Santa Paula High School, asked whether certain parts of the fair could still go forward, like the livestock or 4H portions.

“Are there any alternatives to the entire fair being cancelled?” He said 4H and other groups “figured this would happen,” but asked the board if a livestock show or some other event “where it’s just the animals”

had been considered.

Many other members of the public participating in the Zoom meeting voiced their support of Flores’ idea.

Cornejo said the board is precluded from answering any questions raised by members of the public and cannot “engage” with them in any way about comments submitted during the meeting.

“I just think it’s really not wise and feasible to plan any large gatherings of any type until we get an all clear,” said Dan Long, director on the board.

“I am heartbroken and angry,” said Cornejo. It is “a terrible decision to have to make,” and it’s “not being taken lightly by anyone . . .

I’m angry such a thing would have to happen.”

Free testing now available Ventura County opens COVID-19 testing centers for residents who meet criteria

n May 4, as part of an effort to increase the number of residents tested for the coronavirus, Ventura County opened up free testing centers at several locations across the county to residents who meet particular criteria.

The testing centers will conduct a viral PCR test performed using a nasal swab. Anyone with symptoms is encouraged to call; screening questions will be asked by phone. Testing is free, and no insurance or physician referral is required.

To get tested, first call in for the phone screening and to be assigned a testing location. Two state-managed testing locations will only be testing essential workers. Seven county-managed testing locations will test anyone who meets the expanded criteria. Essential workers can be tested at any location.

Criteria for testing:

WITH SYMPTOMS: Those with symptoms of COVID-19, such as cough or shortness of breath or two of the following symptoms: fever over 100.4 F, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell.

WITHOUT SYMPTOMS: Those who have no symptoms but have come in close contact with a person who has a confirmed case of COVID-19. Individuals who are asymptomatic with close contact may be tested twice — at the start and end of the 14-day quarantine.

Those who test positive initially do not need to be tested again.

Close contact is defined as living in the same residence, being sexually intimate or staying within

six feet for over 10 minutes with a person who is positive for coronavirus and was not wearing a mask.

Close contact also includes sharing of bodily fluids — coughed/sneezed on, shared utensils, provided care by, etc.

May Day protests in Ventura, Oxnard Local residents rally for reopening, rent relief

n Friday, May 1, thousands of people across the United States came out to protest stay-at-home orders and voice their frustrations over how the restrictions undertaken to stop the spread of the coronavirus have affected their way of life. Ventura County residents were among them, gathering in Ventura and Oxnard to express concerns over the lockdown, economic impacts and more.

Several hundred people gathered at the Ventura County Government Center on Victoria Avenue in opposition to the public health orders requiring people to stay at home and directing non-essential businesses to remain closed.

“We are here to protest the illegal and unconstitutional lockdown,” said Howard Blasingame of Ojai.

He said there is “no political or legal reason for it to be allowed, should have never started. America is going to hell in a handbasket. It’s not about toilet paper anymore, people are starting to lose their lives.”

The group of protesters covered nearly the entire corner at Telephone Road and Victoria Avenue. Most were gathered in a thick line along the curb stretching a few hundred feet around each side of the corner. Cars

Passengers in one small car, however, taunted the protestors while waiting for a green light, at one point sticking their tongues out at them.

“I’m so proud of Ventura because all these people came out to support our freedom,” said Karen Robasciotti from Ventura, looking around at the crowd. “There are people hurting, small businesses around here. I’m old and I’m really patriotic and this brings tears to my eyes that all these people are here supporting freedom.”

Attitudes varied on whether any closure should have occurred at all, with some at the protest acknowledging that stay-at-home orders have served their purpose. Most of the protestors were not wearing any face coverings and few were practicing social distancing — even though the online information about the protest asked participants to do both.

“I feel like we’ve been good little boys and girls and we stayed in for 40-plus days, and it’s time to reopen California because more lives will be at risk from the fall out of poverty and depression and loss of jobs,” said Scarlett Lani of Agoura HIlls.

KEYT reported, and video footage showed, that three people in nursing scrubs and surgical masks stood in apparent opposition to the protest. They stood quietly, with arms folded, in the median divider on Telephone Road, and left at about 12:45 p.m.

At least one car drove by with a sign that read “We support our healthcare workers,” countering the media company Smart Meetings.

The event was listed online as associated with two groups, ReOpen California and We Have Rights, and was part of a statewide effort to apply pressure on Governor Gavin Newsom to lift the business closure orders. Some people at the Ventura event were wearing red t-shirts with “We have rights” printed on them with an eagle head graphic.

As of press deadline, Newsom has stated that some retail businesses will be able to open by the end of the week. But social distancing restrictions and other public health orders are still in effect.

The group is planning a second gathering, Ventura Live Free Protest, on Saturday, May 9, at 12 p.m. at the Ventura County Government Center.

Cancel rent car rally in Oxnard

Also on Friday in Oxnard, several local organizations hosted a caravan of about 50 cars to call on elected officials to support working families in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. The caravan began at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot for Food 4 Less at 250 W. Esplanade Drive in Oxnard, stopping first at the office of Senator Hannah Beth Jackson and ending at the office of Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin in Camarillo.

“This push is for our state representatives,” said Lucia Marquez, policy advocate with CAUSE, Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy. “There is momentum around this at the federal level through the bill that has been introduced in Congress to cancel rent and mortgage payments by Rep Ilhan Omar.”

When asked how the government would cancel rent and mortreceived a $250,000 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation to support the Advanced Manufacturing program at Ventura College. The funds will be used to relocate the current manufacturing lab to the college’s Applied Science Center and renovate the new location into a modern manufacturing facility designed to promote manufacturing occupations and enhance student workforce manufacturing skills. “Rolling right along”

Toilet paper production at record-high levels in Oxnard

or Ventura County residents still on the hunt for toilet paper, the Procter and Gamble (P&G) plant in Oxnard, producer of Charmin toilet paper, has a reassuring message.

“Charmin is on the way,” said Shayla Jenkins, human resources manager for the P&G Oxnard site.

“Consumers are choosing to stock up more and stay at home.”

The plant was built in 1969.

According to the P&G website, the company acquired the plant from the International Paper Company in 1973 and is one of six P&G plants across the U.S. that produce paper products. The Oxnard location is open 24/7, 365 days a year and produces Charmin Ultra Soft, Ultra Strong and Mega Rolls as well as Bounty brand paper towels.

“Mega is our favorite, it lasts longer,” Jenkins noted.

“We know it’s still a challenge to find Charmin in stores or online,” said Tonia Elrod, P&G spokesperson. “While it’s hard to give

you exact timing for when Charmin will be available near you, we want to reassure you that production is rolling right along.”

Charmin toilet paper is made out of a pulp and water mix, then heated, dried and rolled. Jenkins said the plant has a making area, where giant rolls of toilet paper are produced, and a converting area, where the giant rolls are converted into smaller rolls for consumer use.

Packaging is then cut into unit loads and later delivered to major retailer shelves.

When asked how many Charmin rolls are made a year with or without the COVID-19 pandemic, Elrod could not comment because it’s considered “competitively sensitive” but mentioned that a four-story-tall paper machine produces the bulks.

“We are . . . shipping and producing at record-high levels,” Elrod said.

Even after a fire at the plant on

March 30, Jenkins said no employees, machinery, equipment or product were harmed, and that the facility’s ability to produce and ship was unaffected. In fact, P&G is currently hiring Oxnard plant technicians to manufacture the products and operate the machinery and equipment.

“Next month we will have a class of six and bring in another class of 12 shortly thereafter,” Jenkins said.

While it’s supplying bathrooms across America, P&G is also giving back to the Ventura County community: The company recently donated products to the United Way of Ventura County (UWVC) and Direct Relief headquartered in Santa Bar-

bara. The plant has also given cash donations of more than $155,000 to UWVC, $8,100 to the St. John’s Healthcare Foundation in Oxnard and $2 million to Direct Relief to support frontline workers.

“P&G has a long history of supporting communities in times of need and we are answering the call to do

even more,” Elrod said. “Importantly, this is a time that Charmin has the opportunity to give back to the communities where we work and live.”

Elrod added that we should all try to think of others during this time.

“Please stay safe and remember to spare a square for your neighbor,” Elrod said.

Make groceries last longer to avoid shopping and cut waste

ood waste is a regretful loss in Ventura County, where, before the pandemic, 16.6 percent of the population was food-insecure, according to the website of Food Share, our local food bank. Yet, Californians were throwing away nearly six million tons of food scraps each year, representing about 18 percent of all the material going to landfills, according to the website of the California Department of Resources Recovery and Recycling (CalRecycle).

Not only is food waste a loss of resources, it also creates methane emissions, a “significant source of greenhouse gas emissions” according to CalRecycle.

Now, with people buying more during each shopping trip so they do not have to return to stores as often, there is more potential for waste from food spoilage. The 10 — — MAY 7, 2020

Waste Free Kitchen Handbook

by Dana Gunders offers valuable tips to reduce food waste, and the website Savethefood.com, created by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Ad Council, offers an interactive food storage guide enabling users to search for the food of their choice and see optimal storage recommendations for when the item is freshest, and what to do to “revive” food after it passes the point of freshness.

These guides provide some sensible tips. For example, the bottom shelf is the coldest spot in the fridge and should be reserved for meat, poultry and fish. Slightly warmer upper shelves are an appropriate place to store drinks, leftovers, yogurt, eggs, dips and sauces. Produce drawers usually have levers to adjust humidity. Vegetables prone to wilting should be placed in the high humidity drawer. Fruits and vegetables prone to rotting, such as peppers and mushrooms, should

be placed in a low humidity drawer. The door of the fridge is the warmest place, so avoid keeping eggs, milk and other dairy items in the door.

Jill Santos, coordinator of Waste Free VC, which assists food recovery networks, offered additional tips to extend the life of items in a refrigerator: Cut stems of herbs, and put ends in a small cup of water. Use the acid from squeezed citrus to preserve other fruit slices. Do not wash produce before refrigerating, as added moisture speeds decay.

Turn stale bread into savory bread pudding and use wilted veggies in blended soups.

The Ventura County Integrated Waste Management Division, adapting material from Gunders’ book and other sources, produced a brochure titled “Taste it, don’t waste it.”

The brochure places 18 fruits and vegetables on a vertical axis, and in four columns along a horizonal axis are tips for how long each item

may be kept fresh in a refrigerator, what preparatory steps should be taken before freezing each item for storage, how each item can best be stored, and how each item can be revived for consumption after it gets to the point where some might consider it ruined.

Examples of the final category include the following: If an avocado becomes too soft, spread it as a substitute for butter or sour cream.

Revive limp broccoli by placing it in ice water and placing it in the refrigerator. Use wilted carrots in soups and purees. To eat an overripe cucumber, scoop out the seeds to remove bitterness. Use overripe apples for applesauce and overripe bananas for cooking bread. If you email us a request, we will send you this guide.

Shelf-stable food can be donated to Food Share. Waste Free VC, funded through April 2021 with a grant from CalRecycle, is increasingly developing capacity to prevent

other types of food from becoming waste. You can stay up to date on this regional effort by following the Waste-Free Ventura County Coalition on Facebook.

Food Forward, another local nonprofit preventing food waste, focuses on fruit and vegetables, harvesting from donors’ backyards and collecting surplus from farmers’ markets.

As a last line of defense against sending food to landfills, you can also divert scraps and spoils through home composting or a worm box.

Turning the tables

Local restaurants look for new business models to survive the lockdown

he impact of COVID-19 on the restaurant industry can’t be overstated. With no dining onsite allowed for the time being, eateries are struggling to find some way to keep the doors open until they can get back to business as usual — which may ultimately look dramatically different from what it was before the pandemic.

Pared-down menus, reduced staff, discounts and specials have been the key to survival for many local institutions. We look at the strategies some Ventura County restaurateurs are using to stay in the game while everyone tries to stay safe at home.

Capriccio Inc. owners Jojo Ramirez and Justin Ramirez wanted to do the right thing. After a meeting

with the Downtown Ventura Organization back in mid-March, the duo decided to temporarily close the Italian restaurant they have owned for two years.

“It was best to close for a while to show the community that the money didn’t matter the most, it was for the

safety of our customers and employees,” Jojo Ramirez said.

On April 12, the restaurant reopened for takeout business with six employees; 18 more are on unemployment. According to Jojo, there has been a huge decrease in service, averaging about 15 to-go meals per day.

“There are a lot of the loyal customers who have stepped forward to make an effort,” Jojo said. “I constantly get from them, ‘we are doing this [to-go orders] because we want to continue to see you stay open.’ I thank the loyal customers who continue to support us.”

“Most are kids from the neighborhood and it’s their first job, they all have families,” Nicola said. “I am still able to pay the [working] employees.”

Mixed bag for family business

“It’s a family affair,” said Joby Yobe, who owns Barrelhouse 101 and 2686 Kitchen in Ventura and Ojai Beverage Company with his father, Jose, and cousin, Jorge Alem.

Yobe decided to close Barrelhouse 101 due to health concerns for his staff and customers. Forty-eight of his employees are currently on unemployment.

“It’s such a social and gathering place that takeout didn’t make sense,” Yobe said. “There wasn’t enough money to keep it running and it wasn’t going to add up.”

He is waiting to hear back from the Payroll Protection Program regarding loans to help re-open the restaurant.

2686 Kitchen, however, is open, with Yobe and his cook running the show while 18 staff members are unemployed. A limited menu is currently being offered, which includes Naan grilled cheese, a variety of pizzas, loaded lasagna and a dozen chicken or beef empanadas. Prices range from $5 to $29.99.

“We’re working on family-style food,” Yobe said. The two-year-old restaurant averages about 10 to 30

meals per day and is seeing an increase with third party delivery businesses.

“It’s an impersonal way of doing business but it’s the new way of doing it,” Yobe said. “Takeout is a great way to support everyone and that’s all we can offer; we appreciate that.”

Yobe is also participating with WCK and has made 1,200 meals for frontline workers.

At the Ojai Beverage Company, orders are even higher, averaging between 20 to 40 per day. Food

items include the tri tip panini, Western drunk burger, Baja fish tacos and pulled pork sandwiches. Prices range from $5 to $15. Alem and a cook run OBC alone; 20 staff members are unemployed.

“We just recently started doing food to go and margaritas and cocktails,” Yobe said. “There’s an unlimited menu with a lot of favorites and you can pick up supplies at the front to go.”

Yobe is looking forward to the day he can see his restaurants full of customers, but wants to do it at the right capacity.

“I feel conflicted because I want things to get back to normal but don’t want us to rush,” he explained.

“My businesses are dependent on people socializing and depending on happy hour.”

Yobe also has a lasting message for Ventura County residents.

“Please be good now so we can have fun again,” Yobe said.

For those who own a boat, Waterside offers dockside service, where customers can park their boats in guest docks and pick up their food.

An interesting concept, to be sure, but not wildly popular.

“We’ve had below 10 orders like that, most people come in the door,” said Tony Dybeku, partner and general manager. Generally, the Channel Islands Harbor restaurant averages 10-30 orders per day.

specials with roasted chicken, chicken Marsala, pasta, fish and chips and more. Dinner and Docktails for two goes for $50 and features four options (New York steak, lasagna, grilled salmon or chicken Marsala), mashed potatoes and vegetables on the side plus tiramisu for dessert and a bottle of red or white wine.

Dybeku said he has been able to employ two of his staff while the remaining 34 are on unemployment.

“They can come in and pick up a meal like pasta or sandwiches for them,” Dybeku said. “I keep in touch to make sure they are okay.”

Waterside is also focusing on catering to local businesses, along with donating meals to local nonprofits such as Casa Pacifica (75 meals every Friday) and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme, for whom the restaurant has prepared 500 meals.

“We would host the fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club at the end of April and because we closed, we couldn’t host it,” Dybeku said. “This was a way for us to say, here is something to help the families and the kids.”

Dybeku recently purchased Honey Cup Coffee and Kitchen next door.

“Breakfast items are made daily,” Dybeku said. “There are going to be many surprising changes and we invite the locals to check it out.”

High Street Art Center’s April production of In the Heights has been canceled, but the show goes on for theater-loving kids with Camp Quarantine. High Street has transitioned its youth theater program online, with limited class sizes and the use of tools like Zoom and Google Classroom for learning and participation. “All sessions are recorded, both to capture unexpected inspirations and for us to learn how to be better,” General Manager Ken Rayzor explained in an April 29 email. Some of the details are still being worked out, and adjustments will undoubtedly be made along the way, but classes currently available are Beginning Acting, Intermediate Acting, Advanced Acting, Beginning Musical Theater Dance, Intermediate/Advanced Musical Theater Dance and Comedy and Stand-Up. Private music instruction will be offered as well.

As far as reopening goes, High Street is relying on a “rolling start” model for its “return season.” Matilda is on schedule for October, but if the theater can’t operate as planned in the fall, it will move its start date to December with Christmas Magic, January with The Sound of Music, and so on.

Cataloging history

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on our community and way of life, and the Museum of Ventura County aims to catalog this historic event through its Rapid Response Collecting initiative. It is asking Ventura County residents to submit stories, videos, photos and other artifacts that it can use to document how our county is dealing with this crisis — the ways we communicate, work, learn, teach, celebrate and mourn.

Examples of digital content the museum is interested in include websites, blogs, home movies, social media posts, sound and film recordings and digital images. Due to safety concerns, the museum is not currently collecting physical items, but it hopes to do so in the future, and suggests modified takeout menus, signage, home lesson plans and grocery lists as potential artifacts of interest.

In March, it was saddened to learn of the passing of playwright Terrence McNally, who died March

McNally produced two plays with OPC and was the recipient of the 2010 OPC Award.

In addition, the OPC paid tribute to two other theatre luminaries through its new OPC Onward Together project, whereby friends and artists of OPC share “memorable theatre experiences” about the people, works and events that have inspired them.

In April, the inaugural “scene” featured a celebratory remembrance of renowned actress, playwright, director and producer Diane Rodriguez, associate artistic director of Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles and a longtime friend of the OPC (her husband, Jose Delgado, is OPC’s producing director). Rodriguez passed on April 10 following a battle with cancer. The May 1 Onward Together was dedicated to the memory of beloved pediatrician, OPC board member and theater enthusiast Dr. Kerry English, who passed away on April 30.

In other OPC news, the organization recently received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle’s Gordon Davidson Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Los Angeles Theatrical Community.

Staying Qool under quarantine

The heart of rock ’n’ roll is still beating at Little Steven Van Zandt’s Underground Garage

tuck in his New York apartment, Little Steven Van Zandt decided he’d dig back through the archives of his weekly “Little Steven’s Underground Garage” syndicated radio program and create something special for those who are laboring under the coronavirus quarantine.

He called the new program “The Qoolest Quarantine Qollection” and found a host — “Trenton Quarantino,” another of his many alter egos.

“I’m thinking everybody’s home, everybody’s trapped at home, let’s give them some extra special content,” Van Zandt said in a late-April phone interview. “My syndicated show isn’t an interview show, but through the years, the guests would come on every now and then. So I thought let’s string all of those shows together “Last week, it was Paul McCartney, Bruce [Springsteen] was the week before that,” he elaborated. “Keith Richards is coming up, Ray Davies of The Kinks is coming up, Brian Wilson. They’re either acquaintances or friends. It makes the conversation a little bit

different. We’re insiders when it comes to the music business. So you can have a different conversation than you would with an outsider.”

The Qoolest Quarantine Qollection, a 12-episode series, can be heard on more than 80 radio stations nationwide. (Ventura County listeners can tune into KTYD at 99.9 FM.) The episodes can also be heard after they air at undergroundgarage.com.

Remembering the rock ’n’ roll renaissance

Bits and pieces of the shows also turn up during Van Zandt’s daily segments on Little Steven’s Underground Garage on Sirius/XM channel 21.

Van Zandt created the Underground Garage in 2002 for a simple reason — real rock and roll had largely disappeared from the airwaves.

“I turned on the radio one day and I was, ‘Wait a minute, what happened to this or that?’ ” he said. “Even the oldies stations keep changing newer and newer.

Now the oldies are like the ’80s.”

So he came up with the Underground Garage concept, which he brought to Sirius satellite radio in 2003.

“It was a selfish thing, first and

foremost,” he said. “I grew up with great radio in the ’60s. Why should our generation be the only generation that had any fun?”

The Sirius/XM channel has had a noticeable uptick in the last two months. “We’ve got a captive audience and people can listen for free,” Van Zandt said. “They’re hearing the coolest rock ’n’ roll records ever made.”

“There’s a fertile period of time in my mind that I call the renaissance — from 1951 to ’71,” he said. “I don’t use that term lightly. The greatest music being made was also the most commercial.

That only happens once in a while. The last time, there were these cats named Michalangelo and da Vinci hanging around. We need to keep the renaissance around for future generations.”

At the center of Van Zandt’s renaissance is the British Invasion, the Beatles-led English bands that sent American kids — like Van Zandt and Springsteen — into their garages to create the rock ’n’ roll that gives the program and channel its name.

But that renaissance isn’t just the three or four years of the British Invasion. So the Underground Garage goes back to play the music that influenced the invaders — Howlin’ Wolf, Little Richard, Elvis Presley — and follows the invasion with the Ramones, Joan Jett, Green Day, “all the way to the future where we have introduced 1,000 new bands in the 18 years,” Van Zandt said.

In between songs, Van Zandt talks about the cool culture of his renaissance, hoping to pass that on to the generations too young to have experienced, say, the surf craze.

“The ’60s will never die,” he said. “People will be studying the ’60s for years.

So we throw in some cultural stuff — who invented the surfboard, who invented the drive-in theater, the hot dog.”

Or the bikini, which, as Van Zandt elucidated on a recent Sirius/XM episode, was actually invented by two French designers in 1946. The first version, designed by Jacques Heim, was called the “Atome” because it was so small. Louis Réard made Heim’s design smaller and called it the bikini, naming it after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, site of nuclear

tests that had taken place around the same time. It was scorned, however, until Brigette Bardot wore a bikini in the 1956 movie And God Created Woman, Bryan Hyland had a 1960 hit with “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” and the beach party movies starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon hit theaters.

That kind of musical, historical and cultural knowledge is at the center of another of Van Zandt’s creations, TeachRock, a free musicbased curriculum developed by his Rock and Roll Forever Foundation that’s now being used by 30,000 elementary, middle and high school teachers in all 50 states.

“We’ve got to preserve a lot of this stuff and use it, not just have it sit on a shelf like a museum,” Van Zandt said. “We’ve got a math lesson on how often the Beatles played in Hamburg. How much time did they spend on stage? That’s part of what we get them to add up. We’ve got a Billie Eilish lesson that’s thinking about her synesthesia, seeing music as colors.

So we’ve got drawing to what they’re hearing. That’s a fascinating thing to watch. We’ve got a Greta Thurnberg lesson about climate and pollution…”

TeachRock now has 200 lessons, all online, ready for teachers to use — which, Van Zandt says, has also increased during the pandemic.

Forced meditation

Unlike many, Van Zandt isn’t going stir crazy during the quarantine.

Rather, the guitarist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, actor, producer, historian, activist and educator is recovering from a three-year stretch of recording and touring with his band, the Disciples of Soul, along with other activity, such as making an appearance in Martin Scorcese’s movie The Irishman.

“I hate to say it because of the circumstances, but I’ve got to admit, I’m kind of enjoying this forced med-

itation,” Van Zandt said. “I’ve been going steady for so long, it’s kind of nice to be forced to stop for a minute.

It’s a time for a reset, to think and analyze. That’s kind of interesting.”

A longtime political activist, Van Zandt is also spending time on the phone, speaking with “governors, mayors, anybody who will talk to me,” urging them not to “open up” the country and to provide economic assistance to people well beyond the one-time $1,200 federal payment.

“They’re making a big mistake right now,” Van Zandt said. “This is the worst handled emergency I’ve ever seen in my life. If we don’t get a grip on this thing, the second wave is going to be worse. And if we get a second quarantine, look out.”

Had the coronavirus not emerged, Van Zandt very likely would be preparing for a Springsteen tour right now. But that trek has now been put off indefinitely.

“It’s going to be awhile,” Van Zandt said of concerts. “I don’t think we’re going to see anything until we have at least a fast, reliable test. Then we can have sports and concerts, but not with an audience. There’s going to be three stages. This is the first stage, the quarantine. Then you’ll have sporting events, concert events with no audience, with people watching at home, because you can’t take the chance.

“The third stage, that could be up to a year, a year and a half, is when they have a vaccine and we can get back to something like normal. We all hope it’s quicker, but it could be 2022,” he said. “We’ve got to be prepared mentally for the worst-case scenario and then be happily surprised.”

ost American viewers probably know British comedian Ricky Gervais as the co-creator, writer and star of the British television series The Office (originating the role that would bring Steve Carell acclaim after the series was imported to the U.S.), or as the sharp-tongued, acerbic host of the Hollywood Foreign Press Golden Globe award shows.

I am a fan of the offbeat humor of the 58-year-old Gervais, who who tells it like it is even if he tramples all over people’s sensibilities along the way. ne drawback to being safe at home is being tired of your own cooking.

I am therefore grateful that takeout continues to be available, and I am especially appreciative of institutions such as Social Tap, which has created some great meal deals aimed at those wanting to indulge on a budget.

Social Tap’s limited to-go menu still has a lot to offer. Most of its popular tacos — beef, chicken, fish, pork and veggie — are available, plus burgers, fish and chips, pulled pork sandwiches, BLTs and a few other things. There are even draft beers (Social Tap’s own label), house wine, margaritas and Calidad (a Michelada made with Social Tap’s own Bloody Mary mix added to a Mexican-style lager).

What’s really been a life saver for me, though, is the Family Meal Deal — a generously sized entree along with enough sides and fixings to feed four people. Tacos, enchiladas, pasta and barbecue are available as supplies warrant. Prices run $35-$45, depending on the meat and preparation. Mexican meals include beans, rice, guacamole and salsa. Barbecue features macaroni, corn, rolls and Brussels sprouts. For pastas, it’s usually salad and bread on the side. When Social Tap says “meal,” it means it.

This past Friday, with the temperatures rising and a long week finally behind me, I decided to start the weekend with a Taco Bar. For $35, I could get one pound of my choice of meat (carnitas or chicken), 12 corn or flour tortillas, shredded cheese, guacamole, salsa, beans and rice. Short rib barbacoa was also available for an extra $5.

We’d been eating a little lower on the food chain for a while, and that beef was sounding pretty good, so I upgraded to the barbacoa.

Social Tap uses ChowNow for online orders, which worked fairly seamlessly. I was able to order, pay and add a tip through my home computer, and select a time for curbside pickup.

When it was time for dinner, I drove out and gave the restaurant a call from my car.

A server came out shortly thereafter, with a plastic bag containing my order in her gloved hands. I popped the trunk, she put it in, and I was on my way.

Once home, I brought my bag of food into the house, washed my hands (20+ seconds with soap and water) and carefully poured all the food into my own clean bowls, discarding the packaging into the recycling bin. However, attraction doesn’t necessarily lead to action, at least for those of us who have a psychological moat holding us back. It’s largely two things that keep us from sneaking out and having sex with the hot neighbor: love for the person we’re with and a personality trait called conscientiousness.

Conscientiousness, which has a bunch of letters in common with “conscience,” is defined by social and personality psychologist Brent Roberts and his colleagues as “the propensity to follow socially prescribed norms for impulse control, to be goal directed, to plan, and to be able to delay gratification.”

A person with a solid helping of conscientiousness cares about the impact of their behavior on other people. However, being attracted to somebody happens automatically; it isn’t a feeling we can decline like a questionable package. So, conscientiousness does not prevent a wandering eye, just wandering sex parts that get busy in its wake.

Even people high in conscientiousness probably have a mental file drawer of potential partners — “backup mates” — even when they have a

partner they love. Research on backup mates by evolutionary psychologists Joshua Duntley and David Buss suggests we evolved to have these in mind, at least subconsciously, to shorten the reproductively costly breaks between being dumped or having a partner die on us and landing their replacement.

Ultimately, you have no control over another person’s feelings. What you can control are your choices, using love (plus physical attraction) and conscientiousness as a guideline for whether to stay or move on. Regarding conscientiousness: A man whose actions day to day suggest he’s ethical is a man who’s less likely to end up in bed with somebody else while he’s still in a relationship with you. As for love and attraction, a man who seems to have serious hots for you, sexually and as a person, is more likely to stick around and keep loving you. You’ll still probably catch him glancing at sparkly ladies at parties, but try to keep in mind that window-shopping is not the same thing as robbing the store. years ago, and I guess I’m not over him. I’m not still pining for my ex, but I find myself comparing every guy I date to him. How do I get him out of my head?

— Haunted When you’re looking for love, it’s good to avoid wearing distracting jewelry, like an ex-boyfriend-shaped anvil on a chain around your neck.

But maybe you don’t have the problem you think you do: not being over your ex. After all, you say you aren’t pining over the guy. Consider that we don’t make judgments by pulling them out of thin air. We need comparisons — to things, people, or prices — as a starting point. An example of this comes from economic psychology.

Psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky observed that the price a person is initially exposed to serves as an “anchor,” influencing decisions they subsequently make. For example, Kahneman writes that upon mention of a charitable contribution of $5, research participants were willing to contribute $20, on average. “When the anchor was a rather extravagant $400, the willingness to pay rose to an average of $143.”

However, when we have no refer-

ence point, no starting point for comparison, judgments we make tend to be all over the place, not refined or useful.

For example, “Is ice cream good?” versus the comparison, “Is ice cream better than gluten-free kale cookies sweetened with artisanal tree rot?”

Chances are you’re using your ex as a reference point to recognize the qualities you do and don’t want in men you encounter. Consider divorcing these qualities from the man by listing them, perhaps in a note on your phone you can periodically reflect on. It might not entirely remove him from your mind, but it could make you feel less haunted by him, less like you aren’t over him.
