Photos by Barry Harrington. pressor site is located in, challenged the two Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) representatives on various aspects of the plan to clean up contaminated soil under the area where existing office buildings at the site will be replaced. SoCalGas also plans to upgrade three compression engines with four new modern engines that will increase the overall horsepower of the facility.

Rubalcava asked whether the facility had the capability to detect the leaks in 2017, when NASA found the site to be a “super emitter” of methane.

“We do test our facilities consistent with all applicable regulations,” answered Jessica Foley, public policy planning manager in the construction department with SoCalGas. She described how “any kind of operation can have mov[ing] parts, vibration and have really small leaks occur.” SoCalGas reports it has fixed the leaks identified by NASA. “It could have been going on for months or for years,” said Tomás Rebecchi, a resident of Ventura who lives two blocks from the compressor station site. He was speaking during public comment and said his two small children will attend E.P. Foster Elementary School, which is just across the street from the project site. “We have many concerns, and not a lot of answers.”

Modernization or expansion?

Maria Ventura, public affairs manager for SoCalGas, emphasized that in the view of the company, the project is needed for proper maintenance and modernization. When asked by councilmembers about the use of the word “modernization” rather than “expansion,” she said the project would not result in any increase in service; the same customers would be serviced by the site. Ventura emphasized that the project is aimed at ensuring “affordable and reliable” natural gas supply to existing customers from Ventura County to Santa Maria.

After being pressed by Councilmember Mike Johnson (Dist. 3), who confirmed the increase

in horsepower at the facility with the new compressors, Foley admitted that more gas could be going through the facility.

“There may be more gas flowing through this station in order to offset the loss of the gas in the northern system,” said Foley. “The dynamics of the energy delivery system has changed, not just with SoCalGas but as a collective total in the energy system.” According to Foley, the upgrade is needed because of a decrease in natural gas production in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties and so the additional horsepower is needed at this compressor site to push more gas through the facility all the way to Santa Maria.

“To me that sounds like an expansion,” said Rubalcava.

VC COVID Update Masks indoors, walk-up vaccinations, bars can open

entura County is in the Orange Tier. This means that most everything is open, with various restrictions. Everyone is expected to wear masks inside and social distance.

Those fully vaccinated can take their masks off outside.

Recreation centers, including amusement parks and indoor activities, can open. Sky Zone, an indoor trampoline park in Ventura, reopened on April 15 with a reduced capacity for social distancing and increased cleaning measures.

Bars that don’t serve food can open outdoors, and bowling alleys can operate as well.

Schools are back in session, on campus for the most part.

Some are still offering distance learning options. Plans for next fall look more like normal overall.

On Monday, May 3, Ventura County reported 76 new cases over the weekend, and on April 30, 20 new cases were reported. By the end of April the county reported that the death of a 40-year-old woman was related to COVID-19. There were just 13 people in area hospitals being treated for COVID symptoms and two requiring treatment in intensive care units.

While the number of new cases is very low, the virus is still something everyone is contending with in daily life. Vaccination is the main solution available and Ventura County is reporting 6—

SoCalGas officials say it’s a needed modernization project to provide reliable energy as the company transitions to meet its net zero goals by 2045, but local residents and community organizations say it’s merely a profit-driven expansion plan that isn’t warranted given the decrease in natural gas demand overall. By mischaracterizing the project as a mere modern upgrade, the project circumvents a thorough environmental review, including an assessment of how it will impact residents of the state-designated disadvantaged community.

This tactic is referred to as piecemealing, and diffuses the environmental impact of the full project. The project in pieces may be able to avoid full environmental review under the Cali-

Today, every person age 16 and over is eligible to be vaccinated in Ventura County. Note that only the Pfizer vaccine is authorized for ages 16 and 17. The Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines received emergency use authorization for those 18 and up.

Last week the county announced that no appointment is needed at many of the vaccination sites around the county. ALL VACCINES ARE FREE. You can still make an appoint online at www.myturn.ca.gov or by calling 833-422-4255.

Questions regarding safety, operation and groundwater contamination

Only one public speaker, David Grau with the Ventura County Taxpayers Association, spoke in support of SoCalGas. Grau emphasized the findings of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), which found that the project would not have a significant environmental impact. DTSC has jurisdiction over the portion of the plan that involves soil cleanup, not the additional gas compressor engines.

Eye on the Environment

Compost contest winners motivated by education

by David Goldstein hen curbside service makes it so easy to send yard clippings away for processing, and when you can easily buy compost or mulch as needed, why are many people so dedicated to do-it-yourself composting, keeping their materials on-site?

Many answers come from the 56 entrants in last week’s Ventura County Compost Cup competition, a project of the Ventura County Compost Network.

The network includes over a dozen private companies and nonprofit organizations involved in local composting.

For Laura Erlig and the staff at One Spark Academy in Thousand Oaks, composting provides an educational opportunity. One Spark Academy, which serves middle school-age homeschooled and independent study students, has maintained a garden for many years. When learning shifted online and outdoors, the program built an outdoor garden classroom at the Las Flores Community Garden. For students in “Seeds & Sprouts,” as the gardening class is called, composting remained a major focus of their studies.

Following social distance protocols and wearing masks, students have met weekly at the garden to maintain vermicompost boxes and compost bins, while tending raised vegetable beds, a weeping mulberry tree, and other plants. The food they grew was then used in their cooking class, “Food Fascination.”

One Spark Academy won first place

in the category for schools and community gardens. Prizes, which Erlig will use for the school garden, include mulch from Agromin or Peach Hill Soils, biochar from Blue Sky Biochar, castings from Organic Solution Soil Amendments and a $50 gift certificate to Green Thumb Nursery, which will be applied to trowels, hoop covers for seedlings and starter plants.

Education was also part of the reason why another Compost Cup winner, Maria Jones of Oxnard, started backyard composting three decades ago. Jones had just moved from a condominium to a house and was eager to start gardening. Encouraged by results she saw in Organic Gardening magazine, she thought composting would be a great way to help her children learn about “nature, planting and growing.”

As Jones began composting, using one compost bin she got from the city of Oxnard and another bin given to her by a neighbor, her son, Colin, came home from Our Redeemer Preschool excited to tell her about the worm composting his teacher had started in his classroom. With a worm box from the city of Oxnard, students were composting their apple cores, banana peels, carrot tops and other food scraps. Colin was eager to also compost at home, and composting became a mother/son activity that has bonded the two ever since.

Even after moving out, Colin, now

State Senate Bill 1383, of 2016, might give many more businesses or institutions a reason to try onsite composting. Over the next few years, California mandates will require any entity generating yard waste or food waste in sufficient amounts to use and pay for separate bins for compost collection. Businesses and institutions composting their material on site may qualify for a “de minimis exemption.”

As part of a statewide day of action on April 17 at Oxnard College, local activists, nurses and officials gathered for a car rally in support of Assembly Bill 1400, the Guaranteed Health Care for All Act. AB-1400 would create a program called California Guaranteed Health Care for All, or CalCare, that would provide comprehensive universal single-payer healthcare coverage and a healthcare cost control system for all residents of the state.

“Isn’t it time that we recognized what the lack of healthcare is doing to our community and our nation?” asked Carmen Ramirez, Ventura County Supervisor (Dist. 5), who attended the rally. “No nation can be strong when so many people have to worry if they can get life-saving healthcare for themselves and their children. Medical bills are the leading cause of bankruptcies for families. We can do better and we must. Now is the time!”

National Nurses United, the California Nurses Association and the Democratic Socialists of America were the organizers of the car rally, with local residents sharing their experiences of dealing with the profit-driven and fragmented healthcare system. Other groups who supported the event included Black Lives Matter, the Diversity Collective of Ventura County, Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) and the Ventura County Coalition for Student Success.

Grant for digital bilingual literacy program awarded to LULAC

A $25,000 Spectrum Digital Education Grant has been awarded to the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Educational Service Centers to fund a bilingual digital literacy program for low income students and Spanish speaking parents, as part of Spectrum’s $6 million multi-year national commitment to communities across the county.

With low rainfall this past season, local water levels remain low and the drought continues.

The city of Ventura continues to offer an incentive program for customers of Ventura Water to replace their grass lawns with native and/or other low-water, drought-tolerant plants. Called the turf removal rebate, the city is offering $2 per square foot (minimum of 200 square feet) up to $3,200 for residential customers and $6,400 for commercial or multi-family properties.

The rebate funds are meant to pay for part of the project and can be used to cover design fees, low-water-use plants, permeable mulch, disposal fees, rainwater capture systems and upgrades of current irrigation systems.

The end of an era The Maulhardts and the history of agriculture in Ventura County

hen the first of the Maulhardts arrived in Ventura County more than 150 years ago, they could not foresee how their farms would spread across the region, slowly contract and ultimately result in the sale of 52 acres of their original family farm to the Oxnard Union High School District Back row, from left: Emma Maulhardt Carty, Dr. A. Something else those early progenitors could not have foreseen was the major crisis that would hit the country just after the groundbreaking: COVID-19.

One year and one pandemic later, what is clear is that the family has survived just about every catastrophe you can imagine: the St. Francis Dam disaster, earthquakes, floods, droughts, insect infestations, windstorms, disease, financial crisis, unexpected family deaths, and all the usual challenges that go with farming.

For the family of Richard and Ruth Maulhardt, whose land was purchased by the OUHSD, it’s a legacy worth remembering and a moment worth reflecting on. ber 1872, they bought 1,243 acres for $10 an acre. The land stretched from present-day Rice Avenue to Juanita Avenue east/west and north/south from Camino Del Sol to the 101 freeway. Other properties included 72 acres north of Palm Drive; 200 acres across the street from the home ranch and the west side of Camino Del Sol; 476 acres off Hueneme Road; 540 acres off Santa Rosa Road; and another 1,000 acres in Camarillo Heights.

Jeffrey Maulhardt: family historian

For Jeff Maulhardt, tracing all this family history is enjoyable. Jeff, the founder of the Oxnard Historic Farm Park Foundation (www.oxnardfarmpark.org) located at 1251 Gottfried Place in Oxnard, has collected numerous family photos as well as antique farming equipment. He and his volunteers tend to some of the original family crops such as sugar beets and lima beans, as well as a small vineyard with vines that date back to the 1880s.

His goal is to invite visitors to browse around and understand a little about the agricultural history of the Oxnard Plain. The park also hosts community and private events.

“The fun part is that when you grow up in this area and being fifth generation, you get to hear all the different things the family members have been a part of and also the different people connected to them,” said Jeff. “For instance, when my wife got a job at Haydock Elementary School, my grandmother said, ‘Oh yeah, I knew him.’”

Jeff reviewed the evolution of the Borchard and Maulhardt family farms in Ventura County from the late 1800s to the 1970s. The first initial crops planted

by Borchard were barley and wheat. The barley thrived, largely because it could be grown as a drier crop with less water than wheat. The success of Borchard’s farm encouraged the Maulhardts to work their way through

Farming required hard work, lots of land, and a little luck to make a go of it. The lifestyle was not for everyone. As is true with many farming enterprises, an increasing number of family members would inherit the land, and face greater pressures to sell off pieces to developing cities and other business interests.

“A lot of farming families, they made money when they sold the land,” Jeff stated. “As the city grows, the property becomes more valuable and you have to decide how you want to go ahead and pay the bills.”

he Ventura County Arts Council continues to bring inspiration in the midst of hardship as it presents its second COVID-compliant exhibition, Reflect 2020.

Four storefront windows in Ventura each showcase a piece designed to reflect on both the trauma and triumphs of an unpredictable year. At the center of this exhibition is a downloadable treasure hunt where participants are invited to think more deeply about the artwork that they see and how it may be applicable to their own experiences.

Art has always been both a means and a reflection of community, as VCAC has unwaveringly demonstrated.

Wendy Osher, VCAC president, explains how the nonprofit organization has worked to uplift the arts of our area. “Our main mission is to promote the potential of art to amplify and build the community in Ventura. With all the resilience and power for approaching things with new perspectives and energy that art can bring, we support artists and art organizations.”

The showcase features four artists, each with a distinct style and thematic core. Carlos Grasso is a musician-turneddeconstructionist visual artist. His piece “COLORSPACE” contemplates the use of vibrant colors to brighten dark times. Josiah Guzik is a woodworking artist with a teaching background, and through “Nichos Volantes” he teaches us the significance of nicho cabinets in Latin America. Belen Islas is an artist whose work has been described as “magical realism,” and her “Tree of Life” is an imaginative depiction of the vitality and resilience of an ecosystem. Lastly, Ksenia McEuen is an art academic whose piece “Divided By Six” tells a personal story of familial tribulation brought about by the pandemic.

The inspiration behind this exhibition was to have the community contemplate their shared experience of the COVID era.

“This was a great moment to provide artists with the opportunity to show work and give the public a chance to be inspired by something they didn’t expect to see… a lot of people who wouldn’t dare darken the door of a gallery or museum can just come see it,” says Osher. “The theme of the show is reflecting on the experiences of this past year, which was something we never anticipated . . .it’s a perfect opportunity for artists to share some of their takes and help others to reflect.”

“Tree of Life,” Belen Islas Like many others, artists have been very affected by the pandemic, both financially and emotionally. “Artists feel it all in a very clear way, they already live on the edge to begin with . . . the ability to show and sell art has been impacted. There’s also the isolation. People draw strength from getting together and comparing their experiences,” explains Osher.

VCAC has continuously proven itself to be a hero to the local arts world, from delivering aide to artists in need following the Thomas Fire to supporting arts education for incarcerated youth. Preserving the arts is not a feat that can be done

“The arts are in financial need . . . [residents can help by] supporting fundraising and initiatives within the county . . . a lot of people seem to think starving artists are the way of the world, but it really isn’t. In many traditional societies, art was so essential there wasn’t even a word for it. It was all so incorporated into their traditions as a society that it didn’t require its own word.”

The fake steak and chik’n tacos, on the other hand, were fantastic! The beef substitute was moist and flavorful, and paired with onions and bell peppers. It put me in mind of a Philly cheesesteak sandwich — a little odd for a taco, but very tasty. The chik’n was even better: nearly indistinguishable (for me) from the real thing, and topped with a wonderful spicy aioli, lettuce and pico de gallo.

I’m a girl in my 20s. I recently started dating a guy I’m falling in love with. He invited me to a party to meet his friends, and I’m nervous.

He’s “objectively” more attractive than I am (6-foot-2, brawny, and incredibly handsome) and very successful. I’m attractive, but I see the looks women give him, and I can’t help but feel his friends will question why he’s interested in me. I’m thinking of backing out of the party, but maybe I should back out of dating him entirely, given the pressure.

party; as you see it, you’re on trial, and they’re the jury. The invite: “Drinks, tunes, and executing the borderline attractive girl at dawn.”

Tell somebody you might end it with this guy because you’re afraid his friends will be all “Eew, why’s he with her?” and they’re sure to scold you that you shouldn’t care what other people think of you. They mean well, but this is ridiculous advice — akin to telling you not to get hungry.

We evolved to be people who care what other people think. That’s built into our psychology, same as the urge that drives us to nab a burrito, which keeps us from passing out, dying, and being eaten by raccoons.

Successfully handling other people’s appraisals of you starts with throwing out everything most of us believe about self-esteem. I explain in “Unf*ckology” that this “I like me!” state we’ve been told to strive for “makes little functional sense.

Psychology researchers and therapists far and wide failed to ask the ‘why?’ question that evolutionary psychology demands: Why would it be evolutionarily advantageous for you to like yourself — for you to sit around saying, ‘I’m fabulous!

Kiss the royal hand!’?”

What would’ve helped our ancestors survive and mate is other people liking them: respecting them, wanting to get it on with them, and sneaking them seconds on the bison frittatas. Accordingly, psychologist Mark Leary explains that we developed an internal monitoring system that tracks “the degree to which other people accept versus reject” us. Our resulting feelgood or feelbad (erroneously called “self-esteem”) is actually part of a three-part process: 1. Our perception of what other people think of us, which leads to 2. Feelings in us (from happy to fearful), which motivate us to 3. Maintain our social position or try to repair it.

So, “self-esteem” is really “what other people think of us”-esteem — a measurement of our social standing — triggering emotions that drive us to preserve or fix it. In light of that, advice to “raise” your self-esteem makes no sense, because how you feel about yourself isn’t the problem, and changing that fixes nothing. (It’s like trying to feel better about your overheating car instead of putting water in the radiator.)

While being popular has many

benefits, panicking at potentially being rejected made more sense when our survival in a harsh ancestral environment depended on our maintaining our social cred with a small, consistent band of people. We now live in vast cities teeming with strangers. If somebody in our social circle decides we’ve got adult cooties, we can pretty easily slide into a whole new social circle simply by hanging out at different bars.

So, your terror about meeting his friends — “LIFE OR DEATH, GIRLIE!” — is driven by psychology that’s seriously outdated: mismatched with our modern environment. Recognizing this can help you put your yearning to be liked into a more modern perspective: Great when it happens but merely a major bummer, not a death sentence, if it doesn’t.

Lowering the stakes like this should be helpful because pressure to excel could cause you to overfocus on your performance. This can lead to clutching anxiety that impairs your ability to perform (“choking under pressure”). Amazingly, research

by Harvard Business School’s Alison Wood Brooks suggests a way to prevent choking is “reappraising”

the pounding heart of anxiety as the pounding heart of excitement. Say to yourself repeatedly, “I’m so excited to go to this party and meet his friends!”

It should also help to approach the evening with a relaxed set of goals: 1. Having fun. 2. Getting to know his friends. Because you’re with him, they’ll probably assume you’re special — which is surely why he’s with you. (A handsome, high-status guy doesn’t get involved with a woman he finds physically and otherwise meh.)

At the party, instead of trying really hard to be liked — a surefire way to be instantly unlikeable — ask people about themselves, and listen with genuine interest. They’ll warm to you, probably without knowing why. Sure, some hearts might remain hardened, but it’s the rare person who’ll cut themselves off, mid-“me, me, me!” to pelt you with canapes and chase you out of the party with a broom. I suggest that in the coming weeks you opt for the “vulgar” Mona Lisa, not the “heavenly” one, as your metaphor of power. Favor what’s earthy, raw, and unadorned over what’s spectacular, idealized, and polished.

Taurus poet Vera Pavlova writes, “Why is the word yes so brief? It should be the longest, the hardest, so that you could not decide in an instant to say it, so that upon reflection you could stop in the middle of saying it.” I suppose it makes sense for her to express such an attitude, given the fact that she never had a happy experience until she was 20 years old, and that furthermore, this happiness was “unbearable.” (She confessed these sad truths in an interview.) But I hope you won’t adopt her hard-edged skepticism toward YES anytime soon, Taurus. In my view, it’s time for you to become a connoisseur of YES, a brave explorer of the bright mysteries of YES, an exuberant perpetrator of YES.
