Real Cheap Sports is now divided into three stations, each with a dedicated employee — all of whom wear company-provided masks. Cleaning protocols are thorough: Everything from desks and handles to light fixtures to computer equipment to ink pens gets cleaned before opening, after closing and between shifts. As employees found areas for improvement, Coates incorporated their suggestions.

“I’m proud of our employees for helping to refine our protocols.”

Cheap Real Sports was able to hit the ground running partially because its team was ready and waiting for reopening: Coates kept everyone on staff and paid them through the shutdown.

“This is a strong business,” Coates

says. “We do well. So we had some reserves . . . We were running out, then we got the Paycheck Protection Program money. That helped us to continue to keep employees.”

He understands that the work environment is dramatically different than before the pandemic, and has made an effort to put staff at ease in the face of stress, discomfort from wearing masks for hours on end, or anything in between.

“I wanted to make the workplace as comfortable, fun and creative as possible,” Coates says. “We’ve been encouraging breaks — there’s a spot outside with a table. We’re taking more breaks.”

Coates acknowledges that sales are way down — about 25 percent of average. But he chooses to be optimistic, saying, “That’s more than we were doing the last few months!”

Real Cheap Sports is doing business through its online store and for curbside pickup. Coates plans to eventually invite customers back into the store, but doesn’t want to rush the process.

“We put a lot of work into this . . . so we want to put in the same meticulous thought into the expanded environment as we did with curbside,” he says. Coates says only a limited number of customers will be allowed in at a time. They’ll be required to wear masks (hopefully their own, but he’ll have disposables available as well) and encouraged to use store-provided hand sanitizer. Starting out on percussion, the teenage Henry began paying close attention to jazz and bebop, wishing to switch over to saxophone, but the band of brothers insisted he keep playing percussion. Thankfully his mother took notice and purchased his first horn, affording him the oppor-

tunity to voice his musical talent and launching a career of performances and recordings that lasted seven decades.

Above all, Henry was a family man with his wife, Lydia, and children Gigi, Henry Jr. (Hank) and Sergio. He built a dual career as a reputable hairstylist to support his family, while the career of the Estrada Brothers simultaneously took shape outside of the local music scene due to baby brother Ruben’s fierce musical talent as a highly skilled multi-instrumentalist. The band blended their classical Mexican upbringing with jazz and Latin rhythms and as people in the music industry took notice, the brothers made a conscious decision to stay home and avoid the trappings of life on the road.

This was especially important for Henry, despite developing himself as a world class musician. He chose a life of being a well-rounded person and putting family before music. He looked at life philosophically and through a lens of spirituality, understanding that being a husband and father was far more important. Family was personal

eal Cheap Sports in Downtown Ventura reopened on May 12 after a two-month closure. Like many retail operations that unlocked their doors during Stage 2 of California’s Pandemic Roadmap, it found that

ne thing that separates a good musician from a great one is the ability to touch listeners with an original sound.This is generally rooted in not only their skilled musicianship but stems from their spirit and ability to welcome you at the door. The tone of a beautifully played instrument comes with hours of practice and discipline.

However, the genesis of that talent is born from a deeper region of the soul. It touches you and it can make you move. It can make you sing, even cry.

That touch is what came out of saxophonist Henry Estrada. It was also part DNA mixed with a profound love for jazz. As a founding member of the legendary Estrada Brothers, Henry Estrada carved out his place in the world of Latin music and has now taken that spirit and touch to a place where music greats are

forever loved and remembered.

Henry Ortiz Estrada was born on July 25, 1936, in Ventura and passed on May 10, 2020, in Camarillo. Henry was raised and attended school in Oxnard with his eight brothers and two sisters. His parents, Luis and Jesusita, migrated from Chihuahua, Mexico to raise their growing family in fertile West Ventura County. His father was an accomplished professional violinist leading his own orchestra, providing the classical music foundation that led his sons to seed decades of the best music this region of California has ever produced.

It was his oldest brother, Luis Jr., that insisted the brothers learn an instrument after returning home from World War II. Hen-

“We’re working through those protocols and won’t [allow customers inside] until we’re fully confident with it,” Coates says.

When Real Cheaps Sports does allow in-store business, he hopes that customers will be patient with staff and all the changes that have been implemented.

“We are still in a pandemic,” Coates says. “Staying home for two months is going to turn out to be the easy part.

Reopening businesses with new protocols in place to keep employees and customers safe is a challenge. Please be patient, understanding and respectful to the retail worker in this new phase. We are all doing the best we can to serve you.

From those early teenage gigs in the 1950s up through recording sessions for the worldwide Jazz Fantasy/Milestone label in the late 1990s, Henry and his brothers became the go-to favorites for just about any kind of performance imaginable. If East L.A. had Los Lobos, then Oxnard had the Estrada Brothers.

By the 1980s, the Estradas were firmly devoted to Latin jazz with Henry and Ruben front and center. Brothers Angel and Bobby had moved on but the group was now anchored by Ruben’s prodigal teenage son, Cougar, on drums. Throughout the years, the Estrada Brothers shared the stage with the likes of Dave Bruebeck, Stan Getz, Tito Puente, Poncho Sanchez and Cal Tjader. They developed their own sophisticated sound built around Ruben’s steller vibe playing and Henry’s crafted jazz licks.

“The opening went remarkably well,” said Evelyn Garfield, owner, called The Queen by regulars. “We implemented all the systems that we had thought of, and believe it or not, they all worked.”

That is kind of the gist of the way I hear it. A lot of people stay neutral and polite, but some get really upset.” Garfield doesn’t want any of her employees to have

But if opening day is any indicator, customers are fine with the new rules.

“The customers were so nice, super fun and positive energy,” Garfield said on Tuesday, May 26. The overall feeling: “We are going to be ok.”

She said prepping to reopen under the rules has been challenging. “There

is a long list, things to do required by the county.”

But one gray area is screening guests for symptoms. “I don’t know exactly what that means. I’m not a doctor or a nurse. My employees aren’t either. What if it’s not done accurately? We are trying to do our best and just make sure we are in full compliance. My biggest concern, number one, is the health of our employees. I do not want to screw it up and get shut down.”

Garfield says the Junkyard is a “high volume, eclectic” restaurant that normally seats 250 people. She laid off all but three of her 50 employees, and cut open hours back, but “we’ve been open everyday through the whole thing for takeout and delivery.”

Even so, many costs stay the same.

“Our normal electricity bill is about $7,000 to $9,000 a month, plus permits, licenses. There was a learning curve of how to do deliveries . . . we have taken on more and more debt.”

Garfield applied for the various loans made available, but the restaurant didn’t get funding. And because it had to lay off most of its employees, it didn’t qualify for the PPE funding that requires 75 percent of employees to be retained. “With an empty restaurant there was nothing for them to do.

model wasn’t good for restaurants and bars.” She points to a few restaurants in the area that have closed for good as a result of the pandemic.

A positive experience during this event has been the feeling of community support Garfield has experienced.

“They are coming out to support us.”

Sharon Austel of the Rotary Club of Simi Valley sponsored meals from the Junkyard for all the workers at the Simi Valley Hospital. Others sponsored meals for employees of the Simi Trader Joe’s and the local fire station.

“These are the kinds of things keeping us alive.”

Customers showed strong support for the restaurant, even putting up signs around town directing people to the restaurant for takeout or delivery.

“Our customers built these wooden signs in the style of my menu that said Junkyard Takeout and Delivery and ‘We miss you like crazy,’ that’s our tagline.” Other signs said “ ‘You’re gonna make it’ and ‘We’re gonna make sure you make it.’ That is the best part of this whole story, the community love,” said Garfield. “And so we did. We’re here.”

Peirano’s sticks with takeout for now

It is not simply opening our doors. If we are actually going to follow the guidelines, it is a significant change in normal business,” said Jim Rice, co-owner of Peirano’s Market and Delicatessen on Main Street in Ventura. He spoke to the VCReporter on May 23 about the decision not to reopen the dining room and patio at Peirano’s right now as many restaurants and businesses were reopening.

“From what I saw last night [in downtown Ventura], a lot of those requirements are not being implemented,” said Rice about the first evening restaurants were able to open their dining rooms in the county. “We are in no hurry to make a 6— — MAY 28, 2020

mistake. Our first priority is to protect our employees and customers.”

Peirano’s has contracted with World Central Kitchen, a national nonprofit organization providing food to those in need during disasters, and with local restaurants to support locally owned businesses.

“That has really helped. We’ve prepared 300 meals every morning.

That allowed us to bring back almost half of our staff. We are running pretty lean and mean.”

Peirano’s also shifted to online sales, and that has worked so well that it will remain even after things fully reopen.

Pointing to extensive efforts made throughout the county to protect the

community, Rice said, “We’ve all worked really hard at being safe, to just toss it all away now is crazy.”

He added that reopening too soon could put the to-go and curbside business “in jeopardy.”

“Spacing is the least of the issues,” he explained. Peirano’s patio could easily be spaced to meet the new rules. “But there is no shared condiments, no salt and pepper at the tables. Silverware has to be single use.” The requirements include a 15-minute sanitation between each table sitting, and having entrance and exit at different locations. He said the restaurant will reopen the dining room and patio, but wants to make sure staff is fully trained and

y now the public knows about PPE, or personal protective equipment: masks, goggles and face shields.

But medical scrubs, the uniform healthcare workers wear, are also an important part of protecting them — and their families after they come home.

“They are easy to change [in and out of] and keep down germs,” said Reyna Chavez, owner of Scrubs on the Run. The store sells scrubs and other medical uniforms and supplies from locations in Oxnard, Thousand Oaks and Ventura. “We are the only supplier from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles.”

“I think our industry will be ok and probably stronger than before,” said Chavez, who has seen an influx of customers that were not previously wearing scrubs. The whole design is to “protect yourself and cleanliness.

They are a better barrier than regular clothes and scrubs are very fashion forward.”

On March 20, she closed the Oxnard location for a month.

Even though she didn’t have to lay off any employees — staff went to other locations — business is still down. She received a loan through Women’s Economic Ventures.

“The WEV loan came through much faster than the PPE loan or through our normal bank,” said Chavez. “It closed in three days.

We were able to stay open, but our numbers were down. It’s just not business as normal.”

Chavez said that when the pandemic hit Ventura County, a lot of workers in healthcare settings wanted scrubs. The company was already selling online, but with an all-sales-final policy due to the coronavirus, “It can be tricky if you’ve never worn scrubs before” to get the fit right. Now, she says scrubs are required in many departments as part of PPE and people are needing them the next day.

“They would say they can’t go to

work tomorrow without scrubs.”

After the Oxnard location closed, Scrubs on the Run had to double up its employees in the Ventura and Thousand Oaks shops due to new health and safety protocols. Since it is an essential business, it remained open. But the stores had to develop processes for steam sterilizing uniforms that were tried on, and keeping a “quarantine rack” so customers are touching fewer items.

The shop has started selling cloth masks made locally, and recently received a shipment of face shields. Chavez says some offices are wanting their employees to have that protection, but if they need to talk on the phone, the face shields are much easier than masks.

“It is day to day. We are trying to keep up with all the changes,” said Chavez about the current business operations. “We put a plan together and present it to staff. We never did Zoom meetings, now we are doing them once a week. And this might be the new way of shopping, it’s working. Everyone has remained flexible and helpful.”

Even though Scrubs on the Run has an online presence, Chavez said the focus is “on our community.” She is trying to develop relationships with Ventura County hospitals, hoping they will switch to supporting a local supplier of uniforms and scrubs.

“They use out of state suppliers, one in Texas. CMH [Community Memorial Hospital] is literally in our backyard,” Chavez said. She was in talks with Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks before the pandemic. “We have a relationship with [the CMH] residency program, providing their lab coats. But scrubs [orders] are filled by an out of state company still.”

Nurses week honors Medical Environmentalist

urses Week, celebrated earlier this month, honors those frontline workers who heal the sick and are today helping to protect us from a spreading pandemic. The commemoration began with one particular nurse in mind. Starting in 1954 to mark the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to care for soldiers in the Crimean War, the commemoration was formalized in 1974, centering on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

A British social reformer and statistician, Nightingale revolutionized nursing by recognizing the relationship between the environment and medicine. She is called a Medical Environmentalist for her work in transforming hospital environments, which previously were large, windowless warehouses full of rows of beds. She recognized the importance of windows, light, fresh air and separating patients by condition.

Although the method of transmission for infections was unknown during her time, she greatly reduced the spread of infections in hospital environments.

A nonprofit organization specializing in environmental medicine, La Médecine Environnementale, on their website, medecine-environnementale. org, traces the origin of environmental medicine to Hippocrates’ treatise, “On Airs, Waters, and Places.” Although many ideals of the ancient Greeks carried through to modern times, medical diagnosis took an unfortunate turn away from the Greeks, into a more “ideological or philosophical-based (non-scientific) approach,” according to La Médecine Environnementale.

Nightingale put medical science back on track. Now, environmental medical science addresses “the true causes of diseases… not just their symptomatic effects,” according to La Médecine Environnementale, prescribing preventative measures such as “a healthier lifestyle” and “precautionary protection measures to face environmental factors causing the diseases and afflictions.”

Nurses and other medical providers honor Nightingale’s legacy by caring not just for those afflicted by their

environments, but also for the environment itself. At the most basic level, this includes managing the waste generated by their own facilities’ medical procedures.

For example, last year, hospitals in Ventura County salvaged over 7,600 pounds of medical devices no longer able to be sterilized for reuse, packing and providing these to Stryker Incorporated, which operates specialized sterilization and reconditioning equipment. This reuse funded the planting of 93 trees in the Monongahela National Forest. Each year, reforestation efforts occur in a different location, with a number of trees dedicated to each of its customers, in accordance with the amount of medical items salvaged.

Some hospitals in Ventura County not only recycle bottles, cans, paper and the normal items expected for recycling in public places. They also pay extra for separate collection of their food waste, which is hauled away for composting.

You can also help properly manage medical waste. Bring expired medications and used needles to proper disposal facilities, which you can find under the “hazardous” tab at Earth911. com. When you pick up a prescription, at your consultation for how to take a drug or use a syringe, ask the pharmacist to include information about how to properly discard leftover materials.

When you are recovering in a hospital room or waiting in a patient room at a doctor’s office, do not use the container labeled “bio waste” without consulting an attending medical professional. Items in those containers must be specially handled, at great expense.

You also sometimes have an opportunity for an unusual type of reuse.

Some one-time use items used on you, such as scissors and blue plastic sheets, may still be useful to you, and if you ask, medical professionals often allow you to take them home for repurposing.

Getting the Job Done Reimagining education amidst COVID-19

s the 2019-20 school year wraps up, local educators forced by the COVID-19 crisis to teach remotely say they are getting the job done, despite being unprepared for the sudden switch to distance learning in March.

“We went out on Friday the 13th and thought we’d come back on Monday, but that was it,” recalled Michael Armstrong, who teaches fourth grade at McKinna Elementary School in Oxnard.

There were some bumps, to be sure. Issues around Internet access, computer skills and participation. New tools to learn. Questions about grading. Being able to send students home with iPads was a critical part of his district’s success with remote learning, and he credits his predecessor, Cesar Morales, with guiding the school board toward a policy of making sure each student had a computer.

According to Aguilera-Fort, fourth, fifth and sixth graders like the new format. Students have a schedule and meet with teachers in small groups, but homework deadlines are more flexible.

“Seventh and eighth graders say they miss the social interaction. For them, the ideal would be a mix of long distance learning and social interaction.”

Parents have been overwhelmingly supportive of the program — in fact, “I truly have not received a complaint,” Aguilera-Fort said.

“For the most part families are saying they are pleased with the work that is in place.”

ments,” Aguilera-Fort said. “Our teachers are doing the best they can to organize a different way of teaching; for them it’s a challenge.”

Disparities in Internet access, participation

Internet access is imperative for distance learning. According to Aguilera-Fort, some 1,500 OSD families don’t have it, something he said is “is absolutely related to income.” For those families, OSD has taken on an expense it didn’t plan for — providing Wi-Fi hotspots through routers. “It’s a big investment, but I think we will be able to meet the need.”

Tiffany Morse, Ojai Unified School District’s superintendent, also found it challenging to provide every student with a device to access the Internet, and a hotspot to go with it.

“We’ve heard the state may be sending funding by the end of May,” just as the school year is wrapping up, said Morse.

“That’s problematic in terms of usefulness.”

According to Veronica Ortega, assistant superintendent of educational services at Pleasant Valley Unified School District, Internet access generally wasn’t a challenge for middle schoolers, but “it was one of the more challenging aspects for younger students. We’ve worked with families to get hotspots.”

The other big obstacle has been participation. Armstrong says only about half of his students are able to complete activities regularly. As with Internet access, family income is a major factor.

“There’s a lot of job insecurity,” Armstrong said, “or sometimes kids don’t have Internet access until late in the evening after everyone else is done with the computer.”

Helping children with schoolwork has been a challenge for working parents, Ortega said. “We’ve had a lot of positive feedback, but it’s put parents in the situation of partnering with us. They’re used to seeing homework come home, but now they’re participating.”

Morse said that just as with the conventional classroom setting, some students flourished, some did poorly, and most were in between.

“A few students have never checked in,” noted Morse.

“Some students check in to some classes but not all classes — I think it’s hard to keep up with them.” Consequently, some middle and high school students “are doing well in some classes and struggling in others.”

By contrast, the remote learning attendance rate has been 97.7 percent at La Reina, a private Catholic college preparatory middle and high school for girls located in Thousand Oaks. La Reina Principal Maggie Marschner said the transition to remote learning was seamless for its teachers because they had already been thoroughly trained in the technology used.

“The way teachers designed their lessons is what really helped the transition the most,” she said. “We give students multiple ways to learn, then many ways to show they’ve learned.”

Rio School District fifth-grade teacher Denis O’Leary said 26 of his 30 Rio Plaza Elementary students have been attending eagerly. While this is partially due to the school having laptops available, he also sent kids home with books. “So, in my case, I’m not asking them to go to a computer program.

I’m asking them to round-robin read.”

O’Leary said his students have been so engaged that they volunteer to read to their group. Even so, some students have not responded well. “The students that are enthusiastic about learning are very enthusiastic and the students who are not usually enthusiastic are pulling back and not connecting at all.”

Students’ mental health has been a priority in Ojai Unified, where counselors have been kept available for students to talk to for emotional support.

“We’ve seen that need just grow exponentially,” Morse said. “Students are depressed, having anxiety, this is a really hard thing for younger students.”

As a result, the school district has become a major hub of the community, according to Morse, serving meals at school sites and providing clothing closets.

“It’s not just academics, it’s supporting the whole family,” Morse observed. “There’s a constant strain on parents.”

Online film fests entertain local movie lovers

ast week, we featured this season’s hottest new releases with our annual Summer Movie Preview. But true cinephiles know that some of the best movies are the ones not available at the multiplex. Both the Ojai Film Festival and Oxnard Film Society have for years brought high-quality, lesser-known productions to local screens. No one is going to the movie theater right now, of course, so both organizations are bringing the movie theater to their patrons via a robust lineup of cinematic excellence.

With theaters closing in March, Sandoval quickly got in touch with his film distributors, and discovered that some of them were offering “virtual cinema.” He curated a list of five films that he found particularly compelling and on March 16 put the links up on the OFS website. Clicking on the link takes viewers to a distributor page where they can rent the film for a three- to five-day window. Rental fees are $10-12, with 50 percent going to OFS. Since 2007, George Sandoval, founder and executive director of the Oxnard Film Society (OFS), has screened critically acclaimed foreign films at Plaza Cinemas 14 on Fifth Street. Screenings took place on the first and third Monday of the month and every Monday during the summer, with 100-150 people per show.

“We are bringing close to 7,000 people to Downtown Oxnard every year,” SandoBeanpole val estimates.

It was an appreciative group, one available were Corpus Christi that didn’t just enjoy seeing the (Poland), Vitalina Varela (Portufilms, but talking about them after- gal) and Incitement (Israel) — all

To access a film, go to the “Online Festival” section on the OFF website, and click on the name of the film. It will take you to a page with a description and a small video screen you can click on to play. The films are hosted on YouTube, but on an unpublished link available only on the OFF website.

Grumette hopes the festival highlights will be entertaining, a tantalizing reminder of the 2020 Ojai Film Festival to come, and a dry run if theaters are still closed (or closed again) come November.

“We really don’t know if it’s going to be possible to do a regular festival,” he says. “In case we can’t, we’re preparing to do an online festival. One way or another, there will be a 2020 Ojai Film Festival.” ojaifilmfestival.com/category/festivalhighlights/

Sandoval just added three more films in May (Beanpole, Mephisto and Bacurau), and will periodically increase the offerings throughout the summer. While he’s not sure exactly how many people are viewing each film, he knows people are watch- April in Autumn ing — and not just Ventura locked down with limited access to County locals.

“So we came up with the idea of showing the highlights from the last couple of years.”

The series launched on May 22 with Angkor Awakens and Ay Mariposa. On May 30, catch the documentary shorts Aleppo and Nobody Dies Here along with the feature film April in Autumn. Other film “bundles” will be made available every Friday through June 26 — and possibly longer if OFF can acquire the films. All films will remain up for the duration.

Grumette says that most of these films are award winners (either from the film festival circuit or OFF judges) and audience favorites. Many of them are short films and documentaries; offerings you can’t typically find on services such as Netflix or Hulu. There was an a fellow in Mexico,” he says.

And frankly, restaurant encounters are a pretty low bar for revealing character. Most people trying to make a good impression (and especially the sociopathic) know to contain themselves, genteelly waving their server over rather than yelling across the restaurant, “Yo, waitslave!”

Because we live in Modernville, our lives are physically easier than at any other time in human history. In lieu of dinner dates, you can schedule challenging one-on-one activities that show you what he’s made of. Camping and hiking are two sure character exposers. Or, if you prefer your challenges less wilderness-oriented, you could work together to assemble IKEA furniture. Consider yourself on the path to happily ever after if you don’t end up with three mysterious pieces of hardware left and/or murder-suicide each other with an Allen wrench.

Recognizing that you have this craving could help you meet it in less romantically destructive ways. You might feed the beast on your own by taking up adrenaline-amping activities like hang gliding or zip lining, or if those are a little out of geographic or budgetary range, jogging through dark alleys in bad parts of town.

To bring more novelty and surprise to your relationship, trade weekly date nights for weekly mystery date nights.

Take turns planning them, and keep what you’re planning a secret from the other (save for any necessary information about wardrobe, etc.). Because

novelty and surprise are the baby mamas of excitement, even an unexpected date eating hot dogs together on a bench while watching the sun set over a pretty body of water is likely to check the boxes.

But don’t stop at suggesting mystery date nights. Tell your boyfriend why: because you have quite the appetite for excitement. He can’t provide what he hasn’t been told you need, and this breeds resentment. You grow resentful over your unmet needs, and then he grows resentful over your resentment.

Dispensary owner re-adjusts his operations and creates new protocols in order to comply with the new safety regulations

W ith more people stuck at home due to the COVID-19 outbreak, there has been a surge in demand for delivery services. From takeout food to cleaning supplies to groceries, you can get almost anything delivered. Now, people can add another direct-to-door convenience to their list: cannabis products.

Cannabis businesses were classified as essential businesses during the pandemic and have remained open. Dispensary owners had to re-adjust their operations and create new protocols in order to comply with the new safety regulations.

Almost every dispensary in town is offering curbside pickup, and those with a delivery license are delivering to cities that have allowed cannabis delivery within their jurisdictions.

One dispensary that has taken strict measures on COVID-19 safety guidelines is Wheelhouse Dispensary and Delivery in Port Hueneme.

Wheelhouse owner Zahur Lalji and partner Sergio Burga, who owns the Wheelhouse Plaza building in Port Hueneme, made the tough decision to close their store for 15 days when the whole world went into quarantine. While other dispensaries remained open during the busiest week in cannabis retail sales, Wheelhouse opted to give its employees the time to cope. Owners and management prioritized training in safety and sanitation before reopening to the public.

“We had to stop and give our employees the time to assimilate that things were going to change for good,” says Zahur. “We wanted to ensure that the safety and the security of our employees and customers came first.”

During the closure, managers and owners had to build a new plan alongside the city of Port Hueneme and the Police Department in order to implement new safety and security protocols. The owners hired a third-party cleaning company to disinfect the entire store including inventory products, displays and furniture. All Wheelhouse employees were trained on new sanitation protocols and additional security personnel were hired to comply with the city’s COVID-19 safety standards.

The most drastic change was not allowing customers inside the store. Orders will only be made online through wheelhouseph.com and customers can choose whether they want to pick up their order curbside or have it delivered.

Designated parking stalls within the Wheelhouse Plaza building are used for curbside pickup. Customers don’t even need to step out of their vehicles — a Wheelhouse team member (wearing protective gear such as a face mask and gloves) will handle the transaction and bring the order out front.

Another aspect of the business that has changed is delivery. Wheelhouse currently delivers to Port Hueneme, Oxnard, Camarillo, Moorpark, Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village. Protocols for delivery have been put in place, such as providing personnel with protective gear and sanitizing tools. The Wheelhouse management crew has created a sanitation checklist and schedule in order to keep the vehicles and storage compartments disinfected at all times. In addition, delivery drivers and dispatchers are continuously disinfecting products before placing them in shopping bags.

As an active business that remains in service, Wheelhouse is committed to helping the community in every way possible. Local dispensaries are working hand-in-hand with nonprofit organizations. Wheelhouse, for example, has sponsored five children from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme. The donations are especially impactful this year as the club had to suspend its fundraising efforts due to COVID-19 precautions. The Port Hueneme Elementary School District reached out to the Cops for Tots Foundation to help purchase 250 delivery crates. Wheelhouse and other local dispensaries helped by donating toward these efforts. The cannabis industry will continue to take an active role in supporting charitable organizations during COVID-19.
