atching the current state of government leadership has been horrifying, to say the least. Whether it’s President Donald Trump trying to play catch up during the COVID-19 pandemic or likely Democratic Party nominee Joe Biden stumbling through early signs of dementia on every news network from his house, the future is not in the hands of the willing or the capable. Sadly, with only two men able to be president, due to our nominating system, one man no longer seems to want to be the president, and the other has forgotten he’s running.

Throughout our nation’s short history, a third-party candidate has never really been an option, but in a post-COVID-19 world, the rules have been thrown out. Now is the time for a real American Dream product to step up and lead. So, when I heard Dallas Mavericks owner and Shark Tank billionaire Mark Cuban was thinking about it, I leaped with joy

at the thought of one of the good guys finally putting their skills to help America.

Cuban is one of the most recognizable people in the world. He’s his own brand that includes being a billionaire who is famous for helping middle-class Americans on Shark Tank make their entrepreneur dreams come true. If Trump was the “You’re fired!” president, then Mark Cuban would be the “You’re hired!” president.

What makes him qualified is that he’s literally been at the forefront of every major movement in America’s past 30 years. He was a part of the dot-com era, where he became a billionaire. His current net worth sits at $4.3 billion. He understands the media. He gets what middle-class Americans deal with on a daily basis.

As Rudyard Kipling wrote in the poem “If,” Cuban lives the line: “…

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch…”

In a recent interview, when asked about running for president, Cuban was coy, stating, “If this would’ve been a month ago, I would have said

absolutely not. But obviously things are crazy, things are changing. So I’ll keep an open mind. But I seriously doubt it.”

He shouldn’t, though, which is why he backtracked immediately.

“But everything’s a reset right now.

You never say never. It’s always plausible, it’s definitely doable. It’s just a question of should you do it?”

Being the president of the United States would not be a fun job. It is the ultimate act of service to one’s country, if done correctly, and one must have a vision.

“If you have a vision for America 2.0, now’s the time,” Cuban added.

“This is a complete reset. All those things you were wondering about. I wonder if we tried this, I wonder if we tried that. Now we can try them.”

And that is what makes the current crop of 2020 candidates so horrifying.

Trump and Biden both lack clear visions. Neither seem to be able to address the problems at hand clearly.

Cuban, on the other hand, was very direct with the company 3M, who manufactures surgical masks. It did not do an efficient job of distributing

the much-needed face masks, and only Cuban was putting its feet to the fire, calling the company to the floor.

“They’ve been silent. Every single healthcare provider and all of America has really been stressed because all we’ve been hearing about is the shortage of surgical masks. Yet so many people including me, including you, including the feds — they’re getting offers of millions and millions of surgical masks at these crazy prices,” Cuban told Fox & Friends.

Cuban went on to say, “And then those people who were reselling them were then price gouging. We’ve gotten to a point now where I think [New York] Governor [Andrew] Cuomo was saying they were paying $7 a mask rather than the 85 cents a mask they were paying prior to this. Somebody is price gouging in a national emergency — that’s criminal.”

In the past month, politicians have been silent in calling a spade a spade. Mostly, because they’ve been bought and can’t speak out.

That’s why we need Mark Cuban right now. We don’t need a guppy.

We need a shark.

s the pandemic reached Ventura County, the public was told they didn’t need to wear masks. That stance softened on April 2, when Dr. Robert Levin, health officer with Ventura County Public Health (VCPH), suggested that the public can help stop the spread by wearing a cloth mask when out of their homes for essential activities.

“There is growing evidence that people can have COVID-19 without any symptoms and that they can pass it to others at this stage,” said Levin in a written statement. “Many people wear masks thinking it will

protect them from a virus, and in certain cases it may. That may also be true for COVID-19 especially if accompanied by good hand hygiene and social distancing, but now there may be a better reason to wear a mask; it will decrease the chance of you spreading it to someone else if you have the infection asymptomatically.”

Levin’s statement specified that face coverings “should not be hospital grade . . . because there is a shortage and our health professionals need them. Masks should be homemade.”

Dr. Stanley Frochtzwajg, chief medical officer at Community Memorial Health System (CMH), agrees that the spread can be slowed

by the public wearing cloth masks — but he stressed they should be only worn for a “brief period,” and he warned of a “false sense of security.”

“There are multiple layers to this,” said Frochtzwajg, speaking with the VCReporter on April 3.

He said we have now been “told in California to wear masks all the time. The other part about the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is ever changing. This is the most dynamic environment . . . What we consider a protocol one day is thrown out the window the next week . . . We are learning as we are going forward.”

N95 and surgical masks

“The most critical one is an N95 mask, used to filter out a majority of viruses,” said Frochtzwajg. This is the type of mask needed to properly protect healthcare workers in all local hospitals from the novel coronavirus. “All other masks do not protect against the virus.”

According to the FDA, an N95 mask or respirator (both words are used interchangeably and describe the simple face covering with or without an exhalation valve) “is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very efficient filtration of airborne particles. The ‘N95’ designation means that when subjected to careful testing, the respirator blocks at least 95 percent of very small (0.3 micron) test particles.” (1) All hospital staff with any contact with patients that are COVID positive or suspected COVID positive must wear an N95 mask, full gown, head covering and face or eye shield.

“Right now we have no shortages of N95 masks,” Frochtzwajg said, but he is “concerned about our status once a surge occurs.

It will be very difficult to project, hard to know for certain what those resources will be like.”

“The next level down are aseptic masks,” said Frochtzwajg. These are frequently called surgical

masks, and the hospital is now requiring all staff, even those with no patient contact, to wear an aseptic mask. These masks are “used in surgery [to] prevent people [wearing the mask] who cough or sneeze or spit while they talk, or have juicy vocalization, from transmitting droplets to the people around them.”

The aseptic/surgical masks are “primarily meant to protect someone who unknowingly has the virus from spreading it.”

Most of us have a “tendency to adjust and touch our masks,” reminded Frochtzwajg. The virus gets into our bodies “through the mucous membranes, eyes, nose and mouth. Along with wearing an aseptic mask, you need to keep your hands away from your face . . . If you are just using an aseptic mask [that has been exposed to the virus], adjust it, scratch your eye, you’d get infected.”

Cloth masks: useful but limited

“The third level of masks . . . [are] cloth masks. They do have a purpose and utility but are really very limited.” Frochtzwajg explained that they can be a problem because, “cloth masks actually increase your likelihood of getting an infection” if they are worn for too long. (2) “When the [cloth] mask gets wet it increases the likelihood of getting

an infection. Cloth masks allow 97 percent penetration [of the virus] compared to medical masks [aseptic/ surgical] that have 44 percent penetration . . . Cloth becomes a liability rather than a potential benefit.” The moisture on the mask becomes a “vehicle” for the virus to “penetrate inside,” and “almost acts as a culture media.”

“Summation of it all . . . a lot of people make a mistake in thinking that if they wear a mask they don’t’ have to think about the other protection modalities” – hand washing, touching your face, social distancing – “That is a fallacy.”

“Now with the [cloth] mask, social distancing becomes more critical, hand washing becomes more critical, hands away from your face becomes more critical.”

Toilet paper alternatives include bidets

Are tortillas flushable? . . . Asking for a friend.” This humorous ditty made the rounds of Facebook postings a couple weeks ago as shoppers reacted to the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic by hoarding toilet paper.

In response, one person posted, “If you run out of toilet paper and start using newspaper, you will find the Times are rough.”

Of course, using newspaper, or tortillas for that matter, will clog your toilet. Using paper towels or sanitary wipes — commonly called “wipies” — will also likely clog your pipes.

If you run out of toilet paper, however, using small amounts of facial tissue — commonly called by the brand name Kleenex — is not likely to clog your pipes, according to Peter Donlon, owner of Oxnard-based Donlon Plumbing. If you need to use more than a few tissues at a time, your safest course of action is to tear a standard-size facial tissue in half and flush only the equivalent of a few tissues at once.

Donlon also noted another solution to the toilet paper retail shortage. His company currently has a waiting list of 15 customers who he jokes are eager to have a plumber install a bidet, so he made a large order and expects to make dozens of the devices available for installation next week. A bidet is a device which shoots a stream of water upward from a ceramic bowl, cleaning whichever part of the body it comes in contact with, front or back, and thus reducing the need for toilet paper. Common in Europe, these devices are unknown to many Americans, prompting the joke about an American tourist who asks the European hotel concierge, “Why are the drinking fountains in the bathroom so low to the ground?”

In Europe, many bidets are stand-alone appliances, installed next to a toilet in a bathroom, but a visit to the websites of bidet vendors reveals a wide variety of options. For example, the Toto Corporation website has a luxury, combination toilet/bidet for $3,370, which includes both oscillating and pulsating functions for the bidet water stream, as well as a heated seat, heated water, and heated air dry functions, all accessible via a detachable remote control. However, vendors also offer $100 bidets which are replacements for toilet seats, and the least expensive bidets are simply attachments which can fit under an existing toilet seat. Donlon provides and installs simple bidets for just their $85 service call fee, plus the cost of materials.

If you opt to replace your entire toilet with a bidet/toilet combination, rather than adding a bidet attachment to an existing toilet, you might consider conserving not just toilet paper, but also conserving water. Low flow toilets are required for new installations in all Ventura County cities, but an additional

water saving feature is optional. The best water saving toilets feature two levels of flushing. You can move a handle one way for a small flush, used for liquid only, and you can move the handle another way to flush solids.

While water conservation has been promoted locally for years, and some water districts have offered incentives for replacement of old toilets with low-flow models, conservation of toilet paper has been less considered and has even been the subject of some debate.

Last year, Kyle Sammmin, writing in online magazine The Federalist, disputed research conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council regarding how much toilet paper is used by the average American and how use of toilet paper affects the environment. The NRDC alleged, in a February 2019 “Issue with Tissue” report, manufacturers of leading toilet paper brands were sourcing their fibers from ancient trees in Canada’s Boreal Forest, the “Amazon of the North,” and Americans were using this precious material at a rate more than 10 percent higher than the average British person, and far higher than others throughout the world.

Sammin pointed to more benign sources of toilet paper and calculated a lower use level.

But whether the actual figure is 56 rolls or 141 rolls per person per year, and whether the toilet paper you use comes from recycled paper, wood chips left over from lumber manufacturing, trees from responsibly managed sources, or a clear cut of a precious virgin forest, we can all agree it is selfish to hoard toilet paper during a crisis, and it is terrible to run out.

To be clear, there is no disruption in the toilet paper supply chain. The problem is entirely a consumer perception of scarcity. The gallery in the palm of your hand

Local art institutions bring virtual tours, online art classes and other creative experiences to an electronic device near you

useums and galleries — like every other non-essential institution or business — are closed for the time being. But make no mistake: Artists are still making art, musicians are still playing songs and creative professionals across the spectrum are finding ways to engage the community, albeit from a distance. More and more, our electronic devices have become lifelines to the outside world — as tools for work and education, ways to connect with friends and loved ones, vectors for entertainment and also as a way to experience art. From classes to virtual tours to streaming concerts and more, here are what some Ventura County art institutions are doing to keep the creative spirit alive.

Studio Channel Islands

studiochannelislands.org For some weeks now, Peter Tyas, executive director of Studio Channel Islands (SCI), has been concerned about the effect that social isolation would have on so many people.

When the coronavirus first started showing up in Ventura County, he had hoped to keep the organization’s Blackboard Gallery open.

That changed on March 19, when Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all California residents to shelter in place and all non-essential businesses and organizations to close. Luckily, SCI was already in the process of

building programming that could be enjoyed from the comfort of one’s home.

“We want to be safe and allow people to connect and grow their creativity,” Tyas said by phone with the VCReporter. His goal was to help people realize that while they might be physically and socially isolated, they were not “emotionally isolated.”

“There are tools that the cultural sector has tried — and they work,” he continued.

He reiterated that message later on Facebook, with a post stating, “Studio Channel Islands has a role to play over the coming weeks to inspire our community, to share ideas and to continue to provide creative experiences that enrich, educate and entertain.”

To that end, the SCI website is showcasing artists offering “live” lessons online from their studios, past and current art exhibitions at the Blackboard Gallery and an arts education program for children.

Art shows online for your viewing pleasure right now: Collectors Choice, Gallery Virgins (new and emerging artists), Richard Barnett’s 100 Portraits, Illuminated (art incorporating neon lights), Magical Realism (fantastic elements in realistic depictions), Karrie Ross’ Light and Space Through Time, The Next Big Thing 2019 and The Illusionists.

Loss just opened April 4, and it’s an exhibit that Tyas says will be particularly relevant in the weeks and months to come — not just in the sense of losing people we know and care about, but with regards to

diminished comfort, connection and security.

Feeling the creative urge? Joe Cibere is offering an online watercolor course geared towards adults, while kids can look to Bijian Fan to learn art and math through origami, and Joe Adams offers up a lesson in drawing a tree. More content is in the works as well.

Providing an educational diversion is valuable indeed, but Tyas sees SCI’s online programming as fulfilling a more vital mission in these trying times: “We believe that our program will give our community a chance to connect with activities that reduce stress . . . aid in communication of complex emotions and . . . allow for communities to support one another.”

Museum of Ventura County

venturamuseum.org Denise Sindelar, deputy director of the Museum of Ventura County, said that in light of the restrictions imposed due to concerns over COVID-19, “We have to be flexible and fluid.”

The museum has tried to do just that, launching a variety of programming, including virtual learning resources for children. Lessons on the monarch butterfly and victory gardens are just two examples currently available, with educational videos and links to other resources.

There are also quizzes for adults and older children in English and Spanish (one on the Spanish flu is up now), historical articles and more.

Those who sign up for the museum’s e-newsletter will have other content — virtual tours, games, articles and even classes — delivered right to their inboxes.

“Our plan is to bring our region’s history directly to you,” said Elena Brokaw, Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director, via email. “We will share stories that will shed light on what we are going through right now.”

Another enterprise the museum is very excited about is its Family History Project.

“The idea is that we have all probably said at some point that we [need] to sit down with our family members, especially our elders, and record our family stories,” said Deya Terrafranca, research library and archives director.

To assist in the process, Terrafranca and other museum staff have put together a series of instructions, organized into six separate steps, to make gathering these stories easier.

Step One involves speaking with and recording elders — FaceTime is perfect for this — Step Two focuses on gathering photos and Step Three includes recommendations for research. Subsequent steps will be sent out via email and posted on the museum’s website as they become available.

Terrafranca noted that this program isn’t being rolled out for the sake of the museum, but for community members (although participants are welcome to share if they so choose).

“With social distancing, it seems even more important right now to connect with those who are isolated,” Terrafranca said. “We think it’s the perfect opportunity to create connection with people and gather family stories.”

Focus on the Masters

focusonthemasters.com/ The local art appreciation and documentation organization has had to postpone its popular Artist Spotlight series for the time being, but with a vast archive that includes oral histories, taped interviews, photos and more, it has a wealth of arts content to share on its website, YouTube channel and Instagram.

Available for your viewing pleasure right now: Artist Spotlight interviews with Lynn Creighton, Astrid Presten, Joanne Julian and Janet Neuwalder . . . just to name a few.

Art-loving kids (and art-loving parents looking for quality educational content for youngsters at home until the following school year) can take advantage of the Learning to See — Explore, Discover Create! lesson plans and videos available on Focus on the Masters’ (FOTM) website.

Learning to See Youth Outreach Program Coordinator Aimee French has had her hands full these past months, with a team of five instructors, several art class “residencies” in Ventura County schools and other endeavors.

“Now that I am not scrambling to get all of that off the ground, I am developing some new things for our website that I have been thinking about for years, but just didn’t have the time to implement!” French exclaims with excitement. “Our plan is to offer an online extension of existing Learning To See lessons, shooting for one per week. The lessons would not be what we teach in the classroom, but related and expanded, user-friendly ideas.”

One lesson, for example, might include a profile of an artist documented by FOTM, an art project based on that artist’s work, and related links. In keeping with the “staying safe at home” mandate, projects utilize materials readily available in most households, with step-by-step instructions and helpful pictures.

The first of these Explore, Discover, Create! programs focuses on Zapotec weaver Porfirio Gutierrez, with instructions for weaving a potholder or bowl using recycled materials, such as cut-up fabric (from

an old t-shirt, for example), paper plates, aluminum foil, yarn and cereal boxes. There’s also a fun chart with other out-of-the-box alternatives kids might use.

Keep an eye on the FOTM website, as French intends to add more lessons in the coming weeks.

Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts

www.beatricewood.com/ The Upper Ojai arts center is jumping on the virtual tour bandwagon, although a lack of funding and time has hampered efforts.

“Our approach is to move ahead with iPhone footage and simple video editing programs,” explained Director Kevin Wallace. “If it feels like we are sharing the arts from the trenches of a pandemic, then so be it.”

The center is known for hosting concerts as well, and while these have been canceled, Wallace said that, “We are also asking individuals who were set to come and perform at the center or present workshops to put together short videos that we can share.”

Other online programming, usually shared via social media, includes “snippets” from workshops, historical photos and videos featuring Beatrice Wood herself.

“We have also shot countless images and hours of footage over the years of our workshops, performances, etc.,” Wallace continued, “that we will now have the time to assemble and share. . . . [I]t will take time

But Senior Curator Lynn Farrand hopes visitors will avail themselves of all kinds of arts-related resources at our fingertips on the Internet — the Guggenheim in New York, Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, The Getty in Los Angeles, etc.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum cimmvc.org Located in the Channel Islands Harbor, this museum will host the Oxnard Union High School District Art Exhibit. It continues that tradition with an online gallery featuring this year’s collection of paintings, drawings, photography, and 3D art by students from Channel Islands, Condor, Oxnard and Rio Mesa high schools. The show runs through April 30, and viewers can cast their votes online for People’s Choice through April 15.

post-pandemic future. The show is viewable April 14-May 15.

“Art persists”

In the words of CMATO Senior Curator Lynn Farrand, “Even in our times of social distancing, art persists.” Amidst fear, uncertainty and forced isolation, art in all its myriad forms is there to offer us hope, joy, comfort and understanding, as well as a welcome diversion or an opportunity to learn. We are fortunate to live in a community with numerous cultural institutions and creative minds who have wasted no time in providing online access to these intellectual riches. While we honor the doctors and nurses who continue to protect our physical health, let us also acknowledge the contributions of artists and musicians who do so much to bolster our mental and emotional well being.

“Our community needs the arts more than ever,” Farrand wisely stated. “COVID-19 may keep us apart, but art’s ability to connect us is what will ultimately prevail.”

A variety of resources are available to help artists pursue their passions during the pandemic

rtists are a hardy lot. They are actors, musicians, fine artists, graphic designers, writers, and other creatives who make their living by pursuing their passions. They are not strangers to struggle, even in the best of times.

But these are anything but the best of times. The onset of COVID-19 has pressed a collective pause on the arts in Ventura County and the world.

The community, at large and at home, has responded with resources to help ease the financial and emotional strain on artists, including grants, online workshops and opportunities to share and experience performances and artwork online.

Creative Capital provides an abundance of links to helpful tips, national and local grants and workshops on subjects like “Coping with COVID: Financial Implications for Creative Individuals.” Creative Capital is maintaining its monthly list of artistic residencies, grants and exhibition calls from organizations that are continuing to offer open applications, “despite the effects of COVID-19.” Go to creative-capital. org for more information.

While brick and mortar locations have had to cancel performances, many virtual venues have been created to keep the music playing. The Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center (PACC) invites musicians to submit short performance videos for the chance to be shown on PACC’s YouTube Channel and Facebook page. The videos have been dubbed the Lemonade Sessions because they are designed to make something good from a bad situation.

“Rest assured its meaning is deeply rooted in our commitment to making the best of any situation,” PACC recently posted online. “As we deal with restricted boundaries and ‘social distancing,’ we know the power of music always finds a way to continue to connect with audiences … We’re inspired by stories of artists from around the world who continue to share their music with the public and provide a much needed break from all the

turmoil. But the main purpose here is to hand over the moment to you, the artist. It’s your time, your music, your art, and your words.”

Music performance videos can be between 15-20 minutes long, and the content must be the equivalent of a PG-13 rating or younger.

Videos, accompanied by a brief artist bio and personal social media handles, can be submitted to info@ oxnardperformingarts.com.

Fine art is also going online.

Channel Islands Maritime Museum, which has hosted the Oxnard Union High School District Art Exhibition for decades, has put the popular show of student photography, drawings, paintings and 3D art on its website. The works, created by students from Channel Islands, Condor, Oxnard and Rio Mesa high schools, will be featured on cimmvc.com through April 30. Online voting for the People’s Choice Award is open until April 15.

Billboard.com has listed resources for music professionals and other

artists on its website. It includes the Artist Relief Tree, which is a fund for artists affected by cancellations due to COVID-19 (artistrelieftree. com) and the Freelancers Relief Fund, which offers assistance of up to $1,000 to cover lost income (freelancersunion.org).

Looking ahead, Americans for the Arts is conducting the Economic Impact of Coronavirus (COVID19) on the Arts and Cultural Sector survey. It is “designed to collect information about the financial and human impacts that the spread of the coronavirus has had on arts and cultural organizations and artists since that date.” To complete the survey, go to surveys.americansforthearts.org/s3/CoronavirusImpactSurvey.

few weeks before everything changed, my sister was in town and we enjoyed a leisurely morning at Palm and Boy in Downtown Ventura. The air was cool and soft, the city was still quiet and El Jardin Courtyard, with its arched entrance, red brick sidewalk and charming storefronts, made for a picturesque location for coffee and conversation.

I look back fondly on that outing now, when we could marvel at latte art and sit as long as we desired in a pleasant dining space, even chatting with people at the tables next to us. Hanging out in that courtyard patio is not an option anymore, but Palm and Boy continues to offer its premium coffee drinks and simple but quality menu for takeout.

Coffee was the main thing on our minds that morning, and Palm and Boy promised premium options courtesy of Handlebar Coffee, a roaster based in Santa Barbara. I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to coffee, and a vanilla latte is my go-to whenever I let a professional barista satisfy my caffeine habit. Palm and Boy’s was rich and smooth, with a hint of vanilla that enhanced but didn’t overwhelm. And, true to form, my coffee was served with steamed oat milk “arranged” in a beautiful leaf pattern. My sister — more adventurous than I — tried a honey latte, which had just enough sweetness to counter the coffee’s acidity. If you like your espresso with just a touch of sugar to temper the edge, I highly recommend this option.

We weren’t intending to eat, but the food options caught our eye: açaí, yogurt, granola, fresh fruit and avocado toast. As we were looking forward to a day of wine tasting and indulgent meals, a hearty but healthy start was called for, and Palm and Boy’s menu fit the bill perfectly.

I do love a good açaí bowl, and Palm and Boy’s is definitely one of the better ones. The Stoke Bowl featured frozen and blended açaí berries (pretty, purple and quite tasty — but beware the brain freeze!) with granola, fresh fruit, honey, chia seeds and large coconut flakes. The bowl offered plenty of crunch, sweetness, freshness and flavor with every bite. The portion was quite generous, too, and my sister and I were happy to split rather than get separate orders. For more protein, consider adding almond or peanut butter. Palm and Boy also offers a similar bowl with yogurt instead of açaí.

An added bonus: Bowls come served in a plant-based bioplastic that is compostable.

We didn’t really need the avocado toast, but it sounded good — and the orders we noticed on other patrons’ tables were enticing. The OG Avo Toast featured smashed-up avocado seasoned with red chili flakes and a touch of lemon. On the bottom: a nice, grainy bread.

On top: sprouts and sliced cherry tomatoes drizzled with oil and dusted with salt and pepper. So simple, but so delicious! I almost didn’t want to share.

Like many local restaurants, Palm and Boy has set up an online ordering system for pickup. At this time, it doesn’t look like that wonderful avocado toast is available, unfortunately. But the açaí and yogurt bowls are still an option, and easily customizable. The same can be said for the drinks menu, which offers cold brew, cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, chai and matcha — all available hot or over ice. Milk options include oat, almond, half and half, whole and two percent, and there are a number of syrup flavors, too.

In these days of social distancing, I miss having a local cafe to spend a few hours with a freshly brewed cup of coffee. I look forward to one day returning to Palm and Boy for some coffee, açaí and avocado toast in the courtyard.

Until then, I’m happy to enjoy what I can, safely and c o m f o r t a b l y, right here at home.

I started seeing a guy whose previous relationship ended because he cheated. He insists he really learned his lesson and would never do it again.

Should I trust him, or should I go by that line, “once a cheater, always a cheater”?

— Worried People in relationships do develop little traditions — like coming home every night and checking the closet for their boyfriend’s sex partners.

The question is, does the skeleton that your boyfriend’s yanked out of the closet point to a heavily populated closet in your collective future? This is ultimately a question of whether he’s a cheater — a person psychologically ”wired” to be prone to cheating — or

a person who once cheated. There is a distinction. Sometimes, somebody cheats just to see what it’s like to walk on the bad boy/bad girl side — the (heh) Socio Path. And sometimes, in the moment (SEXXXXX!), somebody who’s generally considerate puts their partner’s feelings on “ignore.”

However, evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Todd Shackelford found there seems to be a cheater personality — a trio of personality traits common to people prone to infidelity: narcissism, low conscientiousness, and “psychoticism.”

That last one — psychoticism — suggests an ax-killing hobby, but it’s actually researcher-ese for a combination of impulsivity, unreliability, and an inability to delay gratification.

Narcissism, of course, is the “Me! Me! Me!” personality trait, reflected in self-absorption, self-importance, exploitativeness, and an empty well in the empathy department. Low conscientiousness is the personality trait of the inconsiderate, reflecting disorganization, poor impulse control, and an inability to delay gratification.

Yet another factor is a personality trait that psychologist Marvin Zuckerman named “sensation-seeking.”

People “high in sensation seeking” crave a variety of new, complex, and

intense sensations and experiences and will take physical and social risks to get them.

Talk is cheap — especially for the ethically sketchy, the morally underfunded. Look at the guy’s behavior and thinking — in your brief past and in the weeks and months to come. See whether it adds up to good character or reflects the cheater personality markers. Sometimes cheaters change, but personality traits have a substantial genetic component, so cheaters mostly just change who they’re cheating with. If your boyfriend’s moral compass is secretly set on Booty Call North, you’re setting yourself up for many joyful years of checking his shirts for some hussy’s self tanner and trying really hard to believe that he only goes to strip clubs for the music.

My fiancee and I mutually ended it several months ago, but she’s staying in touch, reaching out, texting, etc.

It’s really hard to move on when she’s trying to maintain a connection. I’ve hinted at this, and I know she isn’t interested in rekindling romantically, but nothing changes.

After a breakup, it’s hard to go your separate ways if you never stop being together. Though your situation sounds like “Brokeback Mountain” for straight people (“Bro, it’s super hard to quit ya!”), there might be something else keeping your ex-fiancee around.

Ancestral humans became a cooperative species, living and working together in groups, leading to a need to identify (and avoid) the takers among the givers. We seem to have evolved to act in ways that elevate our reputation, which is basically a social credit check for the sort of people we are. For example, evolutionary psychologist Bo Winegard and his colleagues theorize that reputation promotion is one of the evolutionary functions of grief. They see the expression of grief as a form of advertising for our character, showing us to be loyal and committed allies who “form devoted bonds” with people in our lives.

This zombie fiancee thing — the ex-fiancee who keeps coming back and eating your well-being — may be your ex’s way (probably subcon-

scious) of promoting herself as a good friend, a caring person who doesn’t just shut the door on somebody she’s romantically done with. This could help her seem more attractive to the next guy — which is surely help you aren’t interested in providing, especially at the expense of your need to heal.

Toss the hinting. Tell your ex-fiancee that this maintaining-a-friendship business does not work for you, and ask her to stop contacting you for now and/or until you let her know otherwise. Cutting off contact will help you get used to the new normal — you and your former fiancee walking off into the sunset apart, in totally different directions...at least until your new wife is in the delivery room, giving birth to your first child.
