I

am a long time live-aboard on my sailboat in Ventura Harbor, and a business owner in downtown Ventura. Since the March 19 order to shelter in place by the governor, we have seen the careless actions by others (beaches, parks) that have resulted in their closures, and I want to bring up a similar area of concern in my neighborhood. The people who do not live on their boats have been coming down here since last weekend and are again this weekend, as if nothing is different in the world, bringing their friends and family and hanging out all weekend. There have been no restrictions put in place to keep them away until this is over.

One would think that reasonable people would do the right thing and stay home, but they are not. I have even tried to say something to the man in the slip next to me, who ignores me completely and goes about spreading his germs from wherever he lives.

We have many elderly, retired folks who live here, much like the senior mobile homes across the street on Anchors Way. They are very much at risk, and I don’t want to see any of them be a statistic of COVID-19. I have

appealed to the Harbor Patrol and the Port District in Ventura Harbor to address this issue ASAP because unfortunately we must force others to do the right thing or else we’ll all end up oppressed with martial law. I do hope they respond quickly.

Domino effect of hoarding I am getting so tired of going into store after store, and finding more empty shelves than full ones. All the people that are hoarding everything from the store are greedy and not being very considerate of other people, and I’ll tell you why.

I was out taking a walk the other day, and noticed somebody’s garage half way open. As I was walking past, I noticed that from the floor almost up to the ceiling was packed with boxes and boxes of toilet paper and paper towels. I am not the only one in the neighborhood that noticed this as well.

Because of one person going into panic mode and starting to hoard, did you NOT think that there would be a serious domino effect on everyone else? Then when someone needs stuff

like that, there isn’t any — because you think of only yourself, and don’t even think that someone else needs it, too.

We are in California, people. We should all be prepared at any given moment for any kind of disaster in any capacity, like earthquakes. If you were properly prepared all the time, I wouldn’t have to be going to multiple stores looking for one specific item.

If you were properly prepared, a lot of this chaos wouldn’t be stressing everyone out. If you stay ready, you won’t need to get ready.

If you didn’t have anything, wouldn’t you like for someone to show you some kindness by helping you out? I hope that hard reality will make people realize the negativity they are causing by doing this. Think about that one as you use your hoarded items.

History repeating itself

Fast forward to these past years when our own GOP has mostly by default or non-action effectively granted our president and Senate dictatorial powers!

They’ve used their dictatorial power to give tax dollars to the superrich, deny Medi-Cal to uninsured people in the GOP-controlled states and now to give one or more trillions to corporations, where many CEOs earn millions each year in salaries and perks.

Do you agree that U.S. tax dollars should go to cruise companies that are mostly owned (on paper) by foreign companies? The cruise companies can then avoid paying all of the U.S. taxes.

The only way to change our U.S. history is to vote, vote, vote out of office this dictatorial president and Senate. It’s beyond my comprehension how millions of ordinary people blindly follow leaders who repeatedly pass legislation that enriches corporations and the 2-3 percent wealthy.

I

n the near future we are going to experience a coronavirus surge here in Ventura County.

We don’t know exactly what it will look like or feel like, but it will affect all of us.

Here’s what we all need to understand: this virus is dangerous. For many of us — including younger people who are indeed contracting the virus at a high rate — coronavirus will feel like a bad flu. With luck, rest, and fluids, one could ride out the fever, cough, and body aches and start to improve over a period of weeks. However, if our experience in Ventura County is similar to other areas, up to 20 percent of confirmed cases will have a different experience.

Let’s put this in perspective for our county, population ~850,000. In a worst-case scenario, 1 in 5 confirmed cases of COVID-19 will progress to serious illness requiring hospitalization.

One quarter of those hospitalized patients with COVID-19 will further decline to the point where 4—

they need a ventilator and life support to survive.

Using an epidemiologic model recommended by the California Department of Public Health, we find that without strict social distancing, we will need 18,000 ventilators to take care of the sickest patients at the peak of the surge on day 58 of the outbreak. Yet we have only an estimated 180 ventilators across the eight hospitals in Ventura County. Hospitals in Italy, Iran and now New York City have been overwhelmed when the infection rate spiked, and many have died that would otherwise have had a chance at surviving.

We realize that what we are saying is difficult to hear, but we also want to be very clear. These patients are not going to remain abstract statistics. This may well be someone you love, someone you know.

Nonetheless, as your community health care providers, we wish to share this message: We are here for you. We are preparing for the surge every second of every day. We will care for you. We take our responsibility to the community seriously.

But you have a responsibility to our community as well. Ultimately, despite our best efforts, we cannot adequately care for a sick population

that exceeds our capacity. If the rates of coronavirus spike and our county residents all need acute care simultaneously — there will not be enough beds, and many will be denied the care that we would all expect to receive, leading to loss of life.

We understand why most people struggle with the idea of sheltering in place. It imposes limits on our basic freedoms. We are social animals by nature and our joy is tied to our interpersonal connections. Layer on top of that the real need to earn a living to support our families and it can feel like an impossible ask to stay at home. And yet human interaction is the fuel that spreads this virus. Everything we do and everywhere we go — the sum of our normal activities — are like dry brush in a forest fire for coronavirus.

But by staying home — when we deny the virus pathways and carriers to spread — the virus starves. Ironically, after weeks of sheltering in place, if we see that nothing much has happened – that’s when we’ll know that our sacrifice made all the difference.

So here is the good news. If we are able to sustainably reduce social contact by 60-70 percent and improve testing and treatment, the

aforementioned epidemiologic model suggests we could improve from that worst-case scenario of 18,000 ventilators needed on day 58 to a much more manageable peak of 475 ventilators on day 170 of the outbreak. That extra time is critical for our hospitals to build ventilator capacity and allow for the developments of novel treatments.

Thousands of lives would be saved. The key is sustaining the recommended reduction in social contact for that prolonged period of time.

As your physicians in Ventura County, we care deeply about our community and providing the best care possible to our patients. That is why we are asking you to honor Gov. Newsom’s order to stay home. Each week that we shelter in place gives our health care system a chance to adapt and build our defenses to better prepare for the coronavirus surge. Your efforts and sacrifice now will save the lives of people you know and love in the future. Ventura County response to COVID-19 Town hall teleconference hosted by Irwin and Stern focused on stay-at-home compliance, resources

entura County residents have mostly cooperated with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s “stay safe at home” order, Sheriff Bill Ayub said during a telephone conference about the coronavirus on March 27.

Ayub spoke during a Friday town hall held jointly (and virtually) by Assemblymember Jaqui Irwin and State Senator Henry Stern to present the latest information about the response to the coronavirus pandemic.

On March 20, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered California residents to stay home as much as possible and many businesses to close in an extraordinary effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

That being said, rumors of martial law are untrue – the National Guard is only helping to distribute food to local food banks, Ayub said.

Local law enforcement, nonetheless, has “been very vigilant on the front lines about responding to tips from the public,” said Ayub. “We’ve responded to incidents of violations; we go out and take a look.” He acknowledged that lack of awareness has led to some violations of the shelter-in-place rule.

“Deputies talk to people congregating in a park,” for example, Ayub said, but a few business owners have been openly resistant to complying.

“Some simply disagree that they’re nonessential, they say, ‘I’m not going to close’ . . . There is the possibility of prosecution.”

Ayub said another possibility is action by state agencies that accredit businesses.

“This is the thing about public safety, our only goal is to assure compliance,” said Ayub, adding that he encouraged people to continue reporting violations to police and sheriff’s departments.

As of March 31, 149 cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Ventura County, with five deaths. Regular updates are available at vcemergency. com.

Irwin encouraged people who are unable to work during the crisis because they may have been exposed to the virus to file a disability insurance claim with the Employment Development Department (edd.ca.gov). She added that anyone left unemployed during the crisis could apply for unemployment insurance benefits and that the deadline to file state income tax returns has been extended to July 15.

The assemblymember, whose district includes the northeast part of Ventura County, pointed people to her office’s official website at a44.asmdc. org for resources to cope with the crisis.

(edcollaborative.com), said the recently passed stimulus bill has funding to help individuals as well as small businesses.

“What we’re trying to do with the act is to get money into people’s hands right away to get the economy springing right back,” Stenslie said. “Independent contractors are eligible for disaster unemployment insurance . . .

We’ve never seen full income replacement before, usually it’s only a share, but the bill adds funding for that.”

Stenslie noted that there is also an extended sick leave program included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the economic stimulus plan President Donald Trump signed into law last week.

“A worker can take that sick leave and care for family members,” Stenslie said, adding that people could find business and other resources at edcollaborative.com as well as the Employment Development Department’s website.

ow that you’re spending more time at home, it might be a great time to foster or permanently adopt a dog or cat. Cuddling with pets and dog walking comply with social distancing and all stay-athome orders.

Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center (SPARC) has many animals that would love to spend time snuggling and cuddling with you, either as a temporary foster home or a potential forever-home adoption.

“We’re really looking at this as a win-win situation. We are able to free up space to help our community and give some joy, love and a way to help for those who have found themselves isolated,” said Tammy Adkins, administrator at SPARC. “Giving people the kind of happiness, love and stress relief that results from interacting with an animal is why we do what we do.”

SPARC has cancelled many events including a vaccine clinic, offsite adoption and volunteer trainings. Anyone

interested in adopting or fostering a pet, however, can call the organization to make an appointment.

“Animals can benefit from being outside of our environment, even if it’s temporary,” said Jonah Fisher, manager of the kennel at SPARC. “A break from the noise and stress at the shelter would be extremely beneficial and we’re hopeful that some of the temporary situations would become permanent.”

Pet owners should ensure they have plenty of food on hand, as some stores may be closed, and that veterinarians have necessary medication available.

Student nurses screen for virus CSUCI nursing program helps check all entrants to Vista del Mar

ver 30 nursing students at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) are screening all entrants to Vista del Mar Hospital in Ventura for symptoms of the novel coronavirus as part of their needed hours to continue their degree.

“They are providing the standard screening [recommended] by the CDC [Centers for Disease Control] and taking temps of anyone coming into any buildings,” said Jenifer Nyhuis, chief executive officer at the acute psychiatric hospital in the Ventura Hills. She said they started screening everyone “a couple of weeks ago. This is a great opportunity for us, to have that insurance that everyone is being screened and for the student nurses.”

Due to the coronavirus, the clinical classes for the students were cancelled. “They needed

to get their hours and move forward in their class work. It’s a win-win opportunity, we are grateful.”

Nyhuis said that the hospital has an ongoing relationship with the CSUCI nursing program and students have done clinical psychiatric rotations. This situation provides a unique opportunity for the nursing students to get a real-world learning experience and fill a vital need. Nyhuis noted that, “We don’t have additional staff to fill this need, it would have been difficult,” to find people to perform this task for the hospital.

The students are rotating shifts seven days a week with CSUCI managing the schedule. As soon as the need arose, Nyhuis said the faculty at CSUCI got the program “executed quickly,” putting together the “procedure log, equipment kit and worked on the schedule” for the students.

“It’s been a wonderful collaboration, we are thrilled.”

The hospital has “narrowed the points of

entrance” to just one entry and “increased our communication of any changes with local public health and the CDC.” Nyhuis said Vista del Mar has ongoing “re-education of . . . clinical and floor staff on procedures ensuring proper hand hygiene, following all of the guidance from the CDC . . . at a higher frequency than we normally would.”

Another change is that some patient care has shifted to “TeleHealth.” This software allows a doctor to visually see the patient (who is in a room with a nurse) and talk to them and enter information directly into the patient’s chart without exposing either doctor or patient. “This allows the doctor to have a face-to-face with the patient, it is much better than the telephone.”

The hospital has not, however, been able to shift many staff members to working remotely.

“Almost all of our staff are functional parts of the hospital operations . . . most need to be on site.” She said the focus of all of these adapta-

tions is to “make sure patients have as little impact as possible” in their care.

The nursing students are on the schedule through mid April, but Nyhuis said the hospital will be constantly reevaluating needs as the situation unfolds. ♦

Residents mobilize to protect frontline workers

A

s more people are tested for the novel coronavirus, positive cases are tickng up in Ventura County. The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the resulting illness, has also increased. The total hospitalized is relatively low at 30, but healthcare administrators and medical providers are planning and preparing for a potential surge in cases that would stress already strained supplies.

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is the term for everything from gowns to face shields to full hazmat suits that healthcare workers need to be fully protected from the virus when in proximity with those infected. Local healthcare facility employees – from the front desk receptionists and janitors to nurses to surgical specialists – are on the front lines of the battle to stop the spread, and at the highest risk of potentially contracting the virus.

Hospitals across the county, like many across the nation, are looking ahead and asking for donations. True to form, Ventura County is answering the call.

HOSPITALS SEEKING DONATIONS “Based on current supply, projected usage, and market demand and supply availability, Community Memorial Hospital [CMH] anticipates it may face supply shortages of protective masks, protective gowns, face shields, and medical goggles.” The hospital’s March 25 statement included a request to the public

for “masks and other critical supplies,” but also stated the hospital, “is not accepting cloth masks,” and continues that supplies in “original, unopened packaging” is “particularly useful and appreciated.”

CMH medical officials did not respond by press deadline to requests for comment about why they are not accepting cloth masks.

The list of needed items included N95, N99, P95 and standard procedure masks, isolation gowns, respirator hoods or hazmat hoods and P100/N95 respirators and the replaceable cartridges/filters. CMH is a private not-for-profit system that includes CMH in Ventura, Ojai Valley Community Hospital, the Centers for Family Health and several outpatient clinics across the county.

On March 23, Ventura County put out a call for donations of PPE for their facilities.

“We are facing an unprecedented public health emergency, and the increasing demands of our healthcare system is contributing to shortages in personal protective supplies,” said Mike Powers, CEO of Ventura County.

The following items are requested: surgical masks, N95 masks, procedure masks, isolation gowns, medical goggles, DacronTM culture swabs and Tyvek.® suits.

“Medical providers do have PPE at this time. They are preparing for a possible surge and asking for PPE gear to have on standby for that surge,” said Ashley Bautista, public information officer for Ventura County, responding via email on March 26 to the VCReporter about supplies at the hospitals and the cloth masks.

We are certainly very appreciative of all community efforts to help us,” said Dr. Todd Flosi MD, chief medical officer with Ventura County Medical Center. One way the masks are being used now “is when employees go home, they are concerned they will make their families and loved ones ill. Some are using [cloth masks] as a way to save our in-hospital, medical grade masks, to have some safety and protection and comfort of wearing a mask at home.”

Flosi said right now, “It is not recommended that cloth masks be used for direct patient care or contact. In a dire shortage of other types of masks, we will certainly consider them. We do have enough [N95] masks currently, and have a fairly large order from what we think is a reliable source, arriving later in the week.”

COMMUNITY MOBILIZES A SEWING BRIGADE When hospitals are ready for cloth masks, the community will be ready for them. An army of hands has already amassed – donating, driving, cutting and sewing 3,000 cotton masks to be delivered to county hospitals.

“We’ve been going around the clock since March 12,” said Amy Towning, chief executive officer with the Health Care Foundation of Ventura County (HCFVC). HCFVC is a nonprofit organization with a mission to support the Ventura County Healthcare Agency, which governs two county hospitals, Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital, as well as other clinics and facilities. “The main

thing is getting hospitals ready for the surge.”

Towning was involved in founding a sewing brigade of over 300 individuals plus 15 groups with their members who have sewn over 1,769 masks so far.

The group came together before the novel coronavirus reached Ventura County. Towning had reached out to her network through HCFVC about forming a “baby brigade that would create special gifts for low-income moms having babies.” Towning was surprised when the group wanted to give handmade gifts.

“I had no idea this would happen,” she said.

Most in the group “began saying they could sew bibs, burp cloths,” for the new moms. “I was just shocked . . . I thought sewing was really a lost art.”

The group was planning to meet again, “when COVID had reached Ventura. We realized there was going to be a shortage in supply of PPE and there was a message that these masks could be a layer of protection for healthcare workers . . . in the worst case scenario . . . in the event that the hospital is out of other masks.”

“This wouldn’t have been our first choice, regular PPE would be, but this is a way for our community to let our healthcare workers know we care about you and value you.”

Towning was careful to emphasize that the masks alone don’t provide the needed protection, and if they get “moist or wet” they have to be replaced. “These would never be for frontline staff,” she explained. While the majority of the masks are not in use now, some are being worn by “administrative [staff], none with direct patient contact.”

STITCH IN TIME

HIGH-TECH IN-HOME SOLUTIONS Centers for Disease control states that “homemade masks” of fabric “are not considered PPE” and that “caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends below the chin or below) and sides of the face.”

Some local residents are using high-tech solutions to build face shields for healthcare workers.

Ryan Beattie of Camarillo started by designing and creating a prototype of an N95 respirator mask that can be built on a 3D printer. The mask was tested last week by local medical professionals.

They “had concerns with their ability to sterilize them” during testing so “we’ve shifted gears,” said Beattie. “And are now printing the headbands for the face shields. The hospitals are accepting them and they are already in use.” As of March 29, his home machines have printed about a dozen headbands.

The N95 mask he designed used only about $2 in materials to print and he thinks that it could be used for a day and then disposed of. “Maybe they are not desperate enough yet,” Beattie acknowledged. He didn’t expect the masks to “be used in the long term, I expected them to be used for a day, treated as disposable.”

Beattie is the process expert in the engineering group at Takeda Pharmaceuticals in Thousand Oaks. Right now he is making eight headbands a day with the tabletop printer; it takes about two hours to print one. Takeda has allowed him to bring home another printer so he can double output.

He described a sort of crowdsourced approach to solving these issues happening on a global scale. A global 3D printing group he is a part of includes “a bunch” of local experts working with officials from Massachusetts General Hospital to create “a whole new knowledge, a rapid design” approach to “redesigning N95 masks” and other protective equipment.

Takeda itself is in the fight against the pandemic. The company makes several prescription drugs and Beattie says much of the staff is working remotely, with essential personnel going into the office as needed to ensure there are no shortages. According to the company’s website, Takeda is also working on an “investigational plasmaderived therapy for COVID-19” called TAK-888.

Beattie and his cohorts aren’t the only ones looking for high-tech solutions to the PPE shortage. The STEMbassadors of Ventura Unified School District (VUSD) are being directed by Alex Wulff, a teacher at De Anza Academy of Technology and the Arts (DATA), to print pieces of face shields which have been used by VCMC emergency staff since March 24.

“We are using them on every shift to prevent the spread of COVID-19. As healthcare providers, we are so touched by the community’s willingness to step up and find ways to help,” said Dr. Richard Rutherford, attending physician of emergency medicine at VCMC. When it became clear that hospitals did not

have enough PPE, Wulff saw an opportunity for students to help solve a real-world problem in their communities. An open-sourced design was used and Wulff got approval from VCMC officials.

STEMbassadors is a Ventura-based nonprofit organization formed of middle- and high-school students. It has provided 3D printers for classrooms, training 27 teachers to operate them.

Every day, the group is producing 30-40 protective face shields for frontline medical staff. The group includes Torry Kightlinger and Allison Quiroz of Junipero Serra Elementary, Matt Haines of Cabrillo Middle School and former student Patrick Waechter.

The clear Plexiglass sheets are being provided by several different companies, including American Plastics and FASTSIGNS® in Ventura. The immediate goal is to make 500 face shields, but volunteers will keep printing until there is no longer a need. The group is running low on both the material to print the headbands and the clear plexiglass for the shield.

“This project highlights how important it is to have technology and innovation in the classroom,” said Wulff. Since members of STEMbassadors had already trained on how to use the technology, the group was more nimble than any large corporation and was able to start printing quickly. Currently there are 23 printers in operation. “We found a solution to solve a problem within our community,” said Wulff, “and within hours we were providing that solution to our frontline workers.” ♦

“A surprising thing is that it has been remarkable to see how excited the nurses, staff and doctors are with the masks, a morale booster at a very difficult time,” Towning said. “Like kids in a candy shop, so much fun getting these gifts. Really these masks could end up being a memento of surviving an historic event in our world.”

“In WWII women went to work creating bullets to protect our country. There are women and men who are home sewing to protect our country. Another shocking thing is how many men have been sewing with their wives at the sewing machines,” Towning said. She also received an email from a woman whose two teenage children have learned to sew in order to make these masks.

“They are in a production line now, it looks like they have transformed part of their living room into a sewing factory.” A local business owner wanted to keep staff working and was “willing to pay to have staff come in and be at their sewing machines.”

“With this disease, we are building it as we fly, finding out information as we go,” Towning admitted. “Some reports are, it’s not safe to wear over; we will leave that to infection control experts, to hospital leadership to deem how they will use in the event we run out of PPE..”

When asked how hospitals are currently using existing supplies, Towning said, “If we thought we would not have enough food, we’d probably ration our food,” noting that rationing of supplies makes sense.

The mask sewing efforts, however, remain a source of pride. “This has been a beautiful way for our community to show our healthcare workers that we value them, and we are collectively doing it in a safe way, with readily available product like cotton fabric in our homes and sewing in our homes, helping with social distancing in preventing the spread of the disease, which also in turn helps healthcare workers, by us all staying home it helps them because it flattens the curve.”

Towning worked with another local volunteer, Jamie Mattock, to determine which mask pattern would be best. Towning and Mattock knew each other from their work over the past six years with the Ventura County Chapter of the National Charity League, a group that raises money for the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases at VCMC. Towning said the group is using a “standard style” design. “It doesn’t have elastic [which has] infection control issues and elastic can’t withstand the temperatures of sterilization or the autoclave,” a machine for sterilization. They went with a hand-tie style, which covers facial hair, fits over an N95 mask and “comes up very high on the nose and far down on the neck, excellent coverage, it’s comfortable,” explains Towning.

Towning was surprised at the tremendous “mobilization” of the community. People were coming forward saying “I can’t sew but I can drive. I can’t sew but I can cut. I can’t sew but I have fabric, I’m willing to donate it.”

The group is coordinating closely with hospital leadership to ensure the masks are clean and sterile in the event that they are used. Towning explained that the person sewing the masks irons them at a high temperature and puts them in a plastic bag, which is then delivered to Gina Ferrer, a trauma nurse at Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, who uses an industrial iron to press the masks a second time before delivery to the hospital, where they go through a laundry system for sterilization.

“Leadership coordinated with the laundry to create a process, with designated mesh bags,” for the masks, Towning said, adding that the hospital has created a policy on how the masks will be handled and laundered “in the event we need to use them.”

The army of hands working on the masks includes people across the county, and even from other states. Churches, a local quilting group, people in New York and Colorado have all called Towning. “Folks are sewing and sending them to Gina’s address . . . it’s really been a shining example of our community in the face of disaster.”

oled up at home, with a steady stream of anxietyinducing news coming at us from all directions, a diversion would be more than welcome.

Thankfully, our electronic devices — from flatscreen HDTVs on the wall to the smartphones in the palms of our hands — are there for us, and there’s no lack of quality programming available to stream.

Here are some great films and shows to check out while you’re hunkering down.

FOR THE COSTUMES

Emma (Amazon Prime Video) Rich, charming and meddlesome Emma Woodhouse (Anya TaylorJoy) causes plenty of mischief when she ill-advisedly plays matchmaker in her small town. If you missed this gorgeous flick when it hit theaters in February, fear not! The critically acclaimed adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved comedy has already come to Amazon Prime Video. The $19.99 rental fee might feel a bit steep, but considering what tickets used to cost, it’s a small price to pay to enjoy the beautiful sets, Regency-era costumes, sharp and funny script and a plot that’s lighthearted yet intelligent. A balm to the eyes and the soul in these trying times. Fun fact: Sex Education’s Tanya Reynolds co-stars as the social-climbing Mrs. Elton.

FOR A GOOD LAUGH Sex Education (Netflix Original) A smart, insightful and surprisingly sensitive look at teen sex and relationships in all their vexing, befuddling glory. The British series stars Asa Butterfield as mild-mannered Otis, the son of professional sex therapist Jean (a stellar Gillian Anderson), who teams up with classmate Maeve (Emma Mackey) to run an ersatz sex therapy clinic at their high school. The subject matter is ripe with opportunities for hilarity, raunchiness (definitely not family entertainment) and poignancy (yes, really), all of which creator Laurie Nunn realizes with a deft hand and plenty of heart. A fantastic and diverse cast adds to this comedydrama’s many pleasures.

FOR ACTION, ADVENTURE . . . AND NOSTALGIA

The Matrix trilogy (Netflix) Remember when the Wachowski siblings wowed the world with their dark cyberpunk epic about human-

ity under siege from computer overlords? With groundbreaking visual effects, philosophical explorations and a stylishly gritty dystopia, The Matrix was one of the highest-grossing films of its time, and has remained a fan favorite for over two decades. Its sequels (The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions ) are inferior to the original but all three together make for an entertaining six-plus hours of television. So take the red pill and join Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) on their quest to save humanity. (A fourth Matrix is said to be in the works, but production is up in the air thanks to the pandemic.)

FOR A NEW LOOK AT AN OLD FAVORITE

Star Trek: Picard (CBS All Access) Most of us know Jean-Luc Picard as the unflappable, authoritative, ramrod-straight captain of the USS Enterprise during The Next Generation years. The Picard who takes center stage here is a changed man. Older, frailer and somewhat bitter, the now-retired admiral spends his time shambling among the vineyards surrounding his idyllic French chateau, haunted

by Data’s death, the destruction of the Romulan star system and his falling out with Starfleet. When a strange young woman on the run from a mysterious enemy shows up on his doorstep, he assembles a motley crew out of an odd, flawed cast of characters to go in search of answers. Rest assured, sci-fi fans: There’s still plenty of galactic beauty and grandeur here. But this grittier, more jaded version of the future

adds nuance to Star Trek ’s usually bright, hopeful universe. And Patrick Stewart as a diminished, regretful, yet still formidable Picard is doing some of his best work.

FOR SOME KITCHEN INSPIRATION

* Good Eats: The Return (Food Network) and Good Eats: Reloaded (Cooking Channel) Alton Brown revolutionized the cooking show when he debuted his Good Eats back in 1999. He entertained viewers with his sketch comedy-like demonstrations that offered up fun and memorable lessons in cooking science and history along with recipes that genuinely held up.

After a seven-year hiatus, the show is back, with new recipes and, sometimes, new approaches that a wiser — but no less funny — Brown imparts with humor and no-nonsense practicality.

Hungry for more? Check out his Good Eats: Reloaded videos on Cooking Channel TV, where Brown revisits his old episodes to update and improve upon the recipes . . . and, often, make fun of his former self.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (Recently made available on Hulu) It’s Lego v. Lego Duplo in this sequel to The Lego Movie, where

invaders from another universe threaten Emmet, Lucy, Batman and all their friends. And while it’s not quite as good as its predecessor, The Second Part is a worthy successor. The jokes are still sharp — accessible to a younger audience, smart enough to elicit grown-up chuckles — and the adventure is even more chaotic and colorful than the original. Now that parents and kids are both stuck at home, the B plot featuring squabbling siblings in the live-action “real” world will feel painfully relevant.

FOR PURE ENJOYMENT Hairspray (Currently streaming on Netflix) There’s nothing like a feel-good musical to make us smile and help us forget about the worries of daily life. Set in 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray tells the story of perky and plump Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky), who realizes her dream of becoming a dancer on The Corky Collins Show, finding love and social activism along the way. The 2007 film adaptation of the 2002 Broadway musical based on the 1988 John Waters film (coming full circle here) is a campy confection full of energy and optimism, with real messages about self-love, body positivity, social justice and equality folded in.

ken, and basically would just sit in my room with my best friend making up fun little songs that would rip all of these bullies to shreds.”

It actually started out as a joke, she noted, “but the songs turned out to be so catchy that people thought we should start a band.”

With that, Lucas — who plays guitar and sings vocals — added a lead guitarist and a drummer, and originally called the band “Sick of Sarah’s” before changing it to Sik Sik Sicks. As the founder of the band, she is the only original member left, with Julia Dourthe of Simi Valley on lead guitar and Zach Levinson of Calabasas on bass.

“We are currently seeking a new drummer as of now,” Lucas said.

So, how to describe the band’s music? “This question is always a little bit weird for me. I never know how to really classify our music,” said the teen, noting that her inspirations have been Hole, Blondie, L7 and ’90s emo grunge, with “driving guitars, loud drums and lyrics that may or may not offend the average person.”

Much of the inspiration for her songs comes from relationships gone wrong, “and ripping people to shreds who deserve it most in the funniest way possible. I can’t stand bullies.”

Some people describe the band’s music as punk or alternative, “but one fan described it best by saying it’s a healthy dose of teenage angst and dark humor, with songs so insanely catchy and provocative, you can’t help but love every single one, which is a feat in today’s gen-

eration of disposable punk rock.”

Lucas noted that she’s always been a loner, and tends to get depressed, “so there is a lot of time for me to create.

It also helps my emotional state.”

She created Sik Sik Sicks to touch on things that were affecting her and the world around her, such as breakups, broken friendships and bullying.

“Although my songs may come across as mean, they’re really just a way for me to call out bullies and people screwing me over,” she said. “I’m just sick and tired of people treating others like s**t.”

Sik Sik Sicks just “goes against the grain,” she said, “and wants to do the complete opposite of what everybody else is doing. I hope I inspire people to stick up for themselves — and others — and be proud of who they are. Just because somebody else thinks something is cool doesn’t mean it is. In fact, most of the time it isn’t.”

Since the band was formed in 2018, its members have played in numerous venues throughout Los Angeles, including The Wiltern, The Rainbow Room and The Whisky-A-Go-Go. Locally, Sik Sik Sicks has performed in most venues in Ventura, as well as festivals such as Surf Rodeo.

Before the coronavirus forced the cancellation of many public gatherings in Ventura County, the band had several local shows on the schedule, including Rock and Roll Pizza in Camarillo, Greater Goods in Ojai, Conejo Valley Days and the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills. The music scene remains quiet for the time beginning, but once things ramp up again, Sik Sik Sicks will no doubt find its dance card full once again.

n these surreal yet all-too-real times, we find ourselves sheltering in place at home, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be transported by a good book. Fighting Chance, a new non-fiction memoir by local author Alicia Doyle, takes us into the world of boxing as seen through Doyle’s own eyes. An award-winning journalist and a frequent contributor to the VCReporter, Doyle was a competitive boxer, one of only a few hundred women in a male-dominated sport. She won two Golden Gloves championship titles and earned three wins by knockout.

Her first professional boxing match was hailed as the California Female Fight of the Year in 2000.

“Fighting Chance offers an inside look at what’s considered the toughest sport known to man,” says Doyle.

Readers can “see my thought process,” she explains, including dialogue she had with her cornerman and coach.

Fighting Chance introduces us to unforgettable characters, including many of the amazing women Doyle fought against and some of the people who inspired her most, like Robert Ortiz, the owner of Kid Gloves Boxing Gym, and the renowned coach Stan Ward.

Doyle shows us that boxing is a metaphor for life. “Boxing helped me survive, which is a paradox because boxing is battle. Life can be a battle, but if you face it head on you can get through it. The only way out is through.” In the book, Doyle expresses how boxing taught her “important skills for life: focus, heart and dedication — and how to get up when knocked down. I never expected boxing to infuse my psyche emotionally, spiritually and mentally, and put me on a path toward enlightenment.”

You don’t have to be a boxing fan to enjoy the book. “It’s not just about boxing,” Doyle says. “You could hate boxing and still love the book. It’s about the journey.”

That journey is honestly and beautifully chronicled by Doyle, including

her own “origin story” of being a child from a broken home. She shares her vulnerabilities and her triumphs, and her battles — in the ring and in life.

From being a frightened little girl to a fierce boxer, she ultimately arrives at a place of forgiveness of herself and others. Doyle doesn’t shy away from the truth, but it took her two decades to tell it in a way that she felt could be helpful to others.

Writing the book, she explains, “was an incredible endeavor. I started 20 years ago when I retired [from boxing] but I didn’t have the insight and maturity. It was a matter of figuring stuff out. I needed the distance. There were many, many revisions. It had to come from a place of love and forgiveness of myself and for others. I wanted the book to be inspirational and empowering, especially in the times we are living in.”

During these days of “stay safe at home” orders, Doyle continues to be an inspiration.

“I had to adjust, because I NEED my workouts not only to remain in shape — but keep my depression and anxiety at a minimum. I had to do something (there was NO WAY I was going to remain sedentary during this time).

I’ve been going on four- to five-mile treks around a park near my home in Ventura. I walk and run, do sprints, and run up and down inclines on this route. These treks range around an hour-and-a-half, so I’m still getting a great workout, and I’m using my body in ways that I haven’t used it in a LONG time.”
