College Black Student “Implacable pursuit of justice” Moorpark Union hosts Dr. Cornel West

r. Cornel West Ph.D. has been in the news recently. As one of the nation’s most prominent philosophers, activists and intellectuals, that happens regularly. Lately, however, it is Harvard University’s denial of West’s request for tenure that has stimulated media coverage.

When asked by Pauline Nassar, chief director of the Black Student Union (BSU) at Moorpark College, why he thought the school wasn’t giving him tenure, he responded, “Well, there could only be three reasons. One, because I’m too old.”

(West is almost 70.) Another possible reason: the idea that “his best work is behind him.”

West discarded both of those rationales, noting that others have been tenured at more advanced ages, and that he’s been invited to participate in the prestigious Gifford Lectures. The

lecture series, hosted by the four ancient Scottish Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and St. Andrews, focuses on the advancement of theological and philosophical thought, and is considered by many as “the highest honor in a philosopher’s career.” .

West spoke with Nassar during a Feb. 26 online conversation as part of a series of events coordinated for Black History Month by the Moorpark College BSU in partnership with Ventura and Oxnard Colleges. Over 700 people listened in to the conversation.

“It can’t be academics,” continued West, pointing to his many writings and professorships.

“It had to be politics.”

“And I don’t think my support of my dear friend Bernie Sanders upsets the powers that be at Harvard,” West continued. “I’m thoroughly convinced that it is precisely my outspokenness against the mainstream that deeply upsets a Harvard administration who would have to give their stamp of approval to someone who is so critical of the Israeli occupation and actually supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement.”

“I do hate injustice and oppression” West said that once someone comes out in support of that movement “you are usually cast as being an anti-Jewish or anti-Semitic person . . . you can call me any name you want but I’m never gonna stoop as low to hate Jews, I’m never gonna stoop as low to hate any group. But I do hate injustice and oppression.” Any group, he said, that engages in injustice or oppression “will 6— — March 4, 2021

receive my moral critique.”

“Dr. West is unapologetic in his advocacy and fight for human rights. He declares his love for all oppressed people loudly,” said Gerald Richardson III, BSU president at Moorpark College.

Richardson also serves as the state legislative director for the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. He called West’s convictions, and his commitment to them, inspiring.

“That passion, that dedication and implacable pursuit of justice rejuvenated me. It motivated me to keep going, to dream big, to fight for what I believe in, and to seek justice at all cost.”

West, originally from Sacramento, is a skilled purveyor of the spoken and written word which he strives to direct at justice and love for “all oppressed people” in a morally consistent way, whether it is people in Palestine, Pakistan, Libya, Somalia or anywhere on Earth. He’s been doing this work since he was 14 and helped to shut down Sacramento area high schools to force administrators to include Black Studies curricula. Today, he is a professor of public philosophy at Harvard University and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. He has written 20 books and edited another 13. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in three years and holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Princeton. He has participated in spoken word recordings including collaborations with Prince and Bootsy Collins. Called a civil rights activist, he prefers human rights activist, pointing out that the struggle goes beyond civil rights to such things as the right to food and water.

West said he insists on teaching freshmen at Harvard because it’s so important to talk with and be around the younger generation. His directive to the young people of Ventura County is to find a way to “be connected to the struggles for . . . love and justice,” and to effectively position yourself to do that, he said, you have to understand what makes you and where you come from.

“Justice is what love looks like in public” In seeking to “critically challenge our precious students,” West said it’s always important to “situate myself in a very rich tradition of those who have been willing to attempt to cultivate the best inside of me,” hailing the influence of his parents, Irene and Clifton West.

When talking “about race you don’t start with name calling and finger pointing; you begin with trying to understand what has gone into the shaping and molding of who we are so what we can accent the best of who we are...I cannot begin to understand my attempt to engage in truth telling and witness bearing and justice seeking without Irene and Clifton.”

He challenged students to “cultivate a critical consciousness,” and acknowledge the “roots” of who they are, but he emphasized that critical inquiry “must be founded in a moral and spiritual integrity.”

“Justice is what love looks like in public, just like tenderness is what love feels like in private.” West has shared this idea before in the context of education. He explained that institutions of learning all “purport to be in search of truth and justice and fairness,” but that is not

possible without everyone “engaging in a Socratic self examination.”

“For 400 years,” Black people in America have been “chronically, systemically hated and yet, we keep dishing out love, like Coltrane, Martin King, Ella Baker, Harriet Tubman, on and on . . . Stevie Wonder.”

He pointed to the trauma Black Americans and other people of color have borne that could have led to “Black versions of the KKK… but no, we want freedom for everybody.” The trauma of slavery and injustice has “caused us to be wounded healers not wounded hunters . . . We come to elevate the best.”

West emphasized the work of becoming “better love warriors, freedom fighters and wounded healers.”

“People’s humanity comes in different colors” Today, West sees the country “wrestling with” a “spiritual decay . . . hatred, contempt, arrogance.” The pervasive attitude of “I’ll do anything with impunity. That’s not just polarization, thats gansterization . . . We are all living at a time when gangsterized ways of being in the world are being more pervasive.”

When asked about people, including college faculty, who may say they are “colorblind,” West responded that he believed they mean something different from what people of color think. He pointed to the long-held notion that people of color were “inferior.” Today, when someone says

Pauline Nassar they are “colorblind,” he guesses they “really mean they don’t see the inferiority” attributed to people of color in the past. “I reject being colorblind . . . affirm being lovestruck” by all people.

“I’m Christian. When you see folks you oughta be able to affirm, approve, even fall in love with the best of them . . . Be able to revel in each other’s humanity, without claiming we are somehow not seeing color.”

He said he figured it’s pretty impossible to not see his color, and that “preciousness” is at the core of each person’s humanity. Seeing their color “is what connects you to them . . . People’s humanity comes in different colors.”

“Keep on pushin’” The BSU at Moorpark College is taking active steps to address the structural racism and

injustices they’ve witnessed at their campus and across the district.

Richardson said a main concern for Black students on the Moorpark campus and across the Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) “as a whole is racism and inequity.

Black students typically already enter higher education with disadvantages from academic and opportunity achievement gaps. So when we come on campus, when we are not being heard nor supported, it is impossible for our retention and graduation rates to increase.”

He said “culturally responsive support services” are needed along with “faculty and staff that we can identify with, and we need curriculum in all pathways that does not exclude our culture, experiences, research and accomplishments.”

To build the change they are seeking, Richardson authored a Black Lives Matter resolution put forward by the BSU that calls for the Associated Students of Moorpark College (ASMC) and Moorpark College to take several steps to address these issues, including: declaring racism a public health crisis and an enormous educational barrier to success; increasing diversity amongst faculty, staff and administration and promote the hiring of more Black individuals; working with the BSU and college administrators to ensure equitable student grievance processes and accountability of hate and racism (covert or overt) inflicted by any faculty, staff, administration or students on campus; increasing the availability and access of ethnic studies courses; and diversifying Euro-centric curriculum in all pathways.

West spoke about how his outlook on life and enjoyment of music helps him, saying that as a “blues man” he can cope with anything. He said a major mantra he works under follows the lyrics of Curtis Mayfield, and he encouraged the local college students to “keep on pushin’.”

Case rate keeps county in highest tier

As of Monday, March 1, the seven-day case rate per 100,000 people remained in the highest tier level at 16.9%. That number needs to be at or below 7% for the county to qualify for the lower tier, with reduced restrictions in the state’s pandemic blueprint response.

Over the weekend 338 new cases were reported and eight additional people died from COVID-19 related issues.

Ventura County is now reporting 77,594 cases of the virus. That includes 162 inmates at county jails and correctional facilities, 61 people who are unhoused, 592 farmworkers, 141 first responders (including staff of correctional facilities) and 422 people who work in the grocery of food service sector.

The zip code with the highest number of positive cases is 93033 in Oxnard, with 13,454. Simi Valley (93065) has the second highest, with 6,061.

Of the total positive cases, 29,435 identified as Latinx, representing 62.7% of cases, while 27.1% identified as white. In just over 30,000 of the positive cases, however, the race or ethnicity of the people are unknown and that number is not calculated in the total race/ethnicity demographic percentage.

Vaccine update

As of Monday, March 1, Ventura County has administered 202,801 vaccine doses. That number includes 143,428 first

doses and 59,373 second doses.

Ventura County residents or those employed in the county currently in the following sectors are now eligible for vaccination: anyone age 65 and older; individuals working in education and childcare including teachers; long-term care residents; food and agriculture workers; healthcare and emergency response workers.

The county has also clarified that in-home caregivers who provide care to family members who are registered with a regional care center and who have “direct risk of COVID-19 exposure” along with a high risk of complications from COVID-19 are eligible to get the vaccine.

Those individuals with the following conditions qualify: cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, epilepsy, and those with certain healthcare needs such as requiring a ventilator or oxygen. Documentation from the regional center is required to verify the qualifying condition.

New appointments are added each Monday, and on other days when the county receives additional doses. Registration is online at www.vcrecovers.com and via phone for those with limited internet access at 805-477-7161.

Single dose vaccine coming to county On March 2, Dr. Robert Levin, medical officer with Ventura County Public Health confirmed that as early as next week the county could receive doses of Janssen-Johnson and Johnson single-dose coronavirus vaccine..

This vaccine received emergency use authorization on Feb. 27, 2021 from

the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for ages 18 and up. That authorization states the ongoing clinical trial enrolled 43,783 participants in a randomized trial, in which half received the vaccine and half received placebo of saline. The authorization further states that the “FDA’s review has considered the safety and effectiveness data as they relate to the request for emergency use authorization.” The vaccine is about “66.1% effective in preventing moderate to severe/critical COVID-19 occurring at least 14 days and at least 28 days after vaccination, respectively.”

More help for small businesses

In February the federal government announced changes to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) aimed at being more inclusive of small businesses.

The PPP loan application process is open through March 10 for small businesses with fewer than 20 employees and includes more help for sole proprietors, independent contractors and the self-employed.

The changes also allow business owners who have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to apply and eligibility was expanded to include business owners who have student loan debt delinquency and prior non-fraud felony convictions on their record.

Public input sought on county workforce plan by Kimberly Rivers

T

he Workforce Development Board of Ventura County (WDB) is seeking public input on its 2021-24 draft plan for workforce and economic development in the county.

The 2019 State of the Region Report issued by the Ventura County Civic Alliance found that Ventura County’s economic growth has been under 1.5% each year since 2013.

“These temperate numbers were before COVID-19,” says Rebecca Evans, executive director of the WDB. “Economic projections are changing and challenging to predict as we look toward recovering from the pandemic.”

According to the draft report, 13 industry sectors were represented in 73 survey responses between August and November 2020. There were 86 representatives from local industries including working groups for clean energy, business services, nonprofits and manufacturing as well as input from labor unions, education, community organizations and government.

Of the businesses who responded to the survey, 58% reported there were not enough skilled workers, making it challenging to fill positions. The survey found that industries with persistent gaps in skilled labor include healthcare, medical technology, the building and construction trades, manufacturing and product design.

“If businesses can’t find skilled workers locally, there is a risk that they might move their operations elsewhere,” said Tracy Perez, WDB chair and market manager at Manpower, a national recruiting company with an office in Oxnard.

The mandate of the WDB is to link public and private sectors to strengthen the local economy by laying out a plan to ensure there’s a local trained workforce to fill local well-paying jobs.

Perez said the WDB plans aim to “address the disparity between those in well-paying jobs and those who are struggling” by providing a roadmap to how the county “can provide workers with the skills and credentials necessary to secure financially-rewarding jobs and advance their careers.”

Crowdsourcing gives plastic bag solutions

C

rowdsourcing, giving the public an opportunity to provide information rather than seeking it from single sources, is an efficient way to gather data and sometimes provides unexpected results.

Indeed, public agencies such as Ventura County Public Works often find out about potholes, illegal dumping, graffiti and discharges into storm drains through a crowdsourcing website, www.vcpublicworks.org/report-a-concern.

In response to my article about plastic bag recycling problems last week, so many readers provided helpful information that a follow-up article about solutions became possible. Thus, we have the following solutions: Pat Bonnell, of Simi Valley, noted the utility of reusing plastic bags as waste basket liners and also suggested another innovative bag reuse. She noted, “Some thrift stores take them to use for purchases.” Ms. Lilith (her full legal name) of Ventura also provided the thrift store suggestion, noting, in particular, Cat’s Cradle Rescue and Thrift Store, which accepts not only good, clean plastic bags with handles, but also clean bubble wrap.

Stan Wilson and Loretta Burton, both of Ventura, took a practical view of the issue. To deal with the shortage of plastic bag (and other plastic) recycling options, Wilson said, “The best solution is to just stop using it.” Burton noted that although plastic bags are widely distributed, consumers can still refuse a bag.

Even supermarkets declining to place items in customers’ cloth bags usually let customers bag their own groceries.

Kay Wilson-Bolton, Volunteer Director for Spirit of Santa Paula, said food pantries accepted clean, strong plastic bags prior to COVID-19 restrictions, and she “hates buying plastic bags,” but using new bags “minimizes exposure during the pandemic.” Food distribution programs will likely again provide a reuse opportunity for plastic bags after the pandemic.

One reader, who did not want to be named because he was not sure whether his solution is legal, regularly reuses plastic bags by

stuffing the bags into a bag distribution box attached to a post at a nearby dog park. Apparently, especially during COVID-19 changes in work patterns, the container is often empty.

I checked about the viability of this solution with public officials in charge of these programs. Ewelina Mutkowska, Ventura County’s Stormwater Program manager, said she thought such reuse, provided it is done with suitable bags which are properly disposed, would be a good way to solve a problem when bag boxes are empty. Brandon Kaysen, Environmental Services supervisor with the city of Ventura, said he also appreciated “innovative pursuit of reuse” but added, “The better solution is, call your city and report that a site is out of poo bags.” Bags purchased for distribution are the right size and shape for the task at hand, while bags from an eager, but unauthorized, volunteer might not be suitable or might overflow the container.

I also spoke to representatives from the Trex Corporation, which is based in Nevada but recycles most of the plastic bags collected from Ventura County after bags are consolidated at supermarket distribution centers. These recyclers, who make our old bags into decking, appreciated the instruction to ensure recycled bags are free of receipts and twist ties, but also asked for a clarification left out of the article last week. Food storage bags, such as zip lock bags, are acceptable only if the bags do not have a lining. Clear sandwich bags, for example, are okay, but bags coated with colored plastic, usually containing graphics identifying the enclosed product, are not acceptable.

“It is a thrilling place to be” A conversation with Museum of Ventura County Executive Director Elena Brokaw

ince she was named interim executive director in July 2016, Elena Brokaw has seen the Museum of Ventura County through some of the most challenging times in its 108-year history: financial struggles and the resulting temporary shutdown in September 2016, a major remodel, the Thomas Fire and a long-term closure that started in March 2020. And yet, under her guidance (her interim role has since been made permanent, with her official title now the Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director), the museum has thrived. New exhibits, community events, lectures and more all filled its dance card week after week, month after month. Even during our collective COVID pause, it has continued to bring cultural content online. There’s always something new at venturamuseum.org, and that is a direct result of the work put in by Brokaw and her team.

Last year, the Ventura County Reporter intended to run an interview with Brokaw in March as part of our Women’s History Month coverage, which got cut short by the pandemic. For March 2021, we touched base with her again, and gave her the opportunity to share with us her thoughts on arts in the community, the future of the Museum of Ventura County, how it managed during the pandemic and more.

VCR: You come from a big ag family, but you studied art history at Harvard. Was art something you were always passionate about?

Elena Brokaw: I was known as the creative one in my family. When I was 9 or 10, I started writing “books” (that were really half-written stories that were about eight pages long) and loved acting and singing. Visual art was something that I discovered in high school when I took an art history course, and I was lucky enough to get to continue in college. I loved the challenge of writing intellectually about an art form that is, at its core, the antithesis of logic. I have never gotten it right, but I love trying.

Your career appears to have been about bringing arts into the community – Reno, Minneapolis, locally. What made you choose this line of work?

When I graduated from college, the expected next step for me would have been to keep going to school and end up either teaching art history or working at a museum. I did not want to go either of those routes because I didn’t want to be talking only to people who already knew they were interested in art. I lucked into the local arts agency field after I graduated — a line of work that I didn’t even know existed. When I worked at Ventura’s Cultural Affairs Division, I discovered public art, which is about bringing culture and art into everyone’s space. It’s about plunking something down in front of people that is unexpected and jolts people out of their routines. Public art at its best makes us newly aware of our space and place. So that is what my professional interests started to center on: bringing the arts into the public sphere, and helping communities find their own uniqueness through culture.

How did you get involved with the American Film Institute? What were your responsibilities there?

In college, my focus on 19th- and 20th-century American art led me to a lot of film courses.

I loved — and still love — movies (or as they called it in college, “the cinematic art form”).

Some of the most well-known director auteurs from the ’60s and ’70s — like David Lynch and Terrence Malick — graduated from AFI and when they had an opening in their alumni relations department I jumped at the chance to meet some of my heroes and heroines.

When did you return to Ventura County?

2003.

Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like working in Ventura’s community services and parks and rec departments?

I was lucky enough to get to initiate a lot of projects at the city, including the creation of the Parks, Recreation and Community Partnerships Department in 2010. That department was 10 — — March 4, 2021

How were you tapped as interim director for the Museum of Ventura County?

I left the city to focus on consulting — working in short term projects with government, non-profit, and business agencies to help articulate and achieve their goals. The museum’s executive director had just stepped down and so I agreed to serve as the interim director for six months — and then I never left.

Under your leadership, the museum seemed to come back from the brink. It secured public funding, underwent a significant revamp in 2017 and began offering more new exhibits and events. Even during the 2020 closures, there’s been a lot of online content.

How were you able to accomplish these things?

I think the very real danger that the museum might close opened a lot of people’s eyes and made us realize both how important the museum is to us as individuals and to us as a region, and

vcreporter.com also that there wasn’t “someone else” who was going to swoop in and take care of the problem.

I think what I have brought to the museum is a passion and a drive to make the museum the best that it can possibly be and a vision for how we can get there. When I look back at the last four years, it’s almost like the museum got a new battery — and what that battery is, is a whole bunch of people who are all revved up and motivated to bring their dreams and goals to life.

The museum is like an idea factory where the ideas can actually come to life. We have so many meetings where one person says “wouldn’t it be great if we did x,” and then two weeks later x is happening, but way better than the person who had the idea thought it could be, because a whole bunch of other people have brought their own ideas to the initial concept. It is a thrilling place to be.

I know one long-term goal was to catalog the museum’s vast holdings. How is that going?

That project is very difficult, very exciting, will take a very very long time, and is going great!

The county got us off to a great start. In our funding contract, they included funds specifically for the collections, granted us the use of a county building to stage our efforts, and required us to empty out our storage spaces. The county also helped foster a partnership with Cal State Channel Islands which provided tools and resources to start digitizing the collection. The project is directed by Research Library and Archives Director Deya Terrafranca and her team, with oversight and policy direction provided by a lot of volunteers who are members of the museum’s accessions, fine arts and farm implements committees.

What have been the biggest challenges as you right the ship?

We have a reinvention plan with six pillars which guides our long-term and everyday decision-making. That plan is formulated specifically to address issues that plague our museum and many other museums across the country. I would say that our greatest challenge is making everyone feel that the museum is relevant. Most people in our country today walk by museums without even noticing that they are there. Our goal is to make our museum a place that everyone knows about, that everyone can see themselves in, and that helps all of us make sense of who we are and our place in the world.

When museums etc. were required to shut down in March 2020, how did that impact the museum?

Well, it fundamentally changed everything that we do, and how we do it. We had just opened one show the week before the shutdown, and were ready to open two more the Saturday after we closed. And, we were planning a huge number of exhibits and events throughout the year. At first, because our mindset was so fixed on what we offered to the public on our campuses, we thought that we would essentially go dormant until the shutdown lifted. But less than one week later, we started publishing historical articles, creating online games, developing virtual learning modules for kids and families — and we have never stopped.

How challenging was it to pivot to a virtual museum experience?

I think the most difficult thing about the pivot was accepting that we would need to do it: that the shutdown was not a short-term situation, that our lives would be lived differently for a long time. Because the team that works at the museum is so tremendously talented, creative and dedicated, once that reality had sunk in, they immediately figured out both how to provide programs and content for people at home, and what people wanted and needed. And the response has been phenomenal. We actually have gained many more distant members and supporters because now everything we do is available online.

I know some organizations used the downtime to remodel, make improvements, etc.

Did the museum have similar projects?

Both of our sites are homes to older buildings, so we have been addressing some deferred maintenance in both campuses. We also have been working on some exciting new improvements in the gardens and the galleries, which we cannot wait to unveil!

Have you rethought anything about how the museum operates or the resources it offers in light of the pandemic and similar disasters?

I don’t think the museum will ever go back to just the way it was doing business before the pandemic. The response to the online and virtual programs has been so positive that we don’t ever plan to stop developing online content. Essentially, we are thinking of our website as our “third campus” — we produce exhibits, tours and events in Ventura, in Santa Paula and now online.

Does the museum have a target date for reopening?

We have two target dates. We are hoping to open the gardens, with renovations, art installations and kids activities, by June 1, 2021. We will have free admission for all of our garden programs. For the internal galleries, where air flow is limited, we hope to be able to open in July 2021.

What positive things are on the horizon for the museum?

So many! I mean, how many pages is your paper? We are planning through 2025. We want each program at the museum to be entertaining and educational, and are developing speakers series to accompany each exhibit . . . We are expanding the Burroughs Children’s Garden in

back of the Ventura Museum with more interactive kids’ activities. Through our partnership with the city of Ventura, we’ve been able to keep the Albinger Archeological Museum open all year round, and are planning new exhibits on the grounds. We have installed satellite exhibits in other cities in the county and are planning more partnerships to increase those. The Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula has a new garden, in partnership with the UC Hansen Agricultural Center and Master Gardeners. This is only the tip of the iceberg.

What place do you want the Museum of Ventura County to occupy in this community?

Our goal for the museum is that it become the entertainment and cultural center for our county. We want people to think of the museum as a place they can go to have a meaningful experience by themselves, with their families, with friends. We want the museum to be the place to go not to be educated, not to “better yourself” — we want the museum to be a place where people can express themselves and learn more about their place in the community and the world through that expression.

When you think about arts in the Ventura County community, what do you envision for the future?

I would like Ventura County to be a place where artists go to be inspired. I would like our county to be a place that fosters talent and supports emerging artists. I believe that our geography and climate provide a magnetic allure for artists, who for centuries have gravitated toward coastal cities like ours. I have always believed that our county can and should be an arts destination.

I would love to see our region recognized as a place to go to buy art, to visit museums, to go to festivals, to attend theatre, or just to have a unique and moving experience.

What do you think would need to happen for those best case scenarios to come true?

I think the arts — by which I mean cultural organizations, artists and arts supporters — need to get a seat at the table, either by being invited in or by making themselves indispensable. By a seat at the table, I mean being included in discussions about community-wide issues and initiatives, and helping to identify solutions. The arts sector can be a powerful ally in helping non-arts partners — like hospitals, businesses, community groups — achieve their goals. I believe that we are all better when we get out of our silos and work together.

Where do you see the museum in five years?

Ten years?

The plans for the museum have transitioned in the last two years from a laser focus on sustainability to ensuring our relevance for generations to come. We see only good things for this museum. Our goal is to make the Museum of Ventura County the best small history and art museum in the United States. And we know we can get there, with lots of hard work (and a little luck wouldn’t hurt either!).

Professor on leave for treatment of hard-of-hearing student On Feb. 18 a video of an online class session shared on the social media platform TikTok shows Oxnard College biology professor Michael Abram becoming frustrated and asking a hardof-hearing student “do you hear me,” and then saying she was not trying or paying attention.

The student required an off-camera translator to help her understand what the professor was saying.

In a Feb. 19 written statement Ventura County Community College District officials said they were concerned, and reported Abram had been placed on administrative leave during an investigation into the incident.

Derrick Wilson named president of Botanical Gardens The Ventura Botanical Gardens has appointed Derrick Wilson as board president of the nonprofit organization for the 2021 term.

Driver pleads not guilty On Feb. 23, Jacob Caliboso of Oxnard pleaded not guilty to charges of seconddegree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated related to a fatal traffic collision on June 20, 2020 on Pleasant Valley Road.

The Ventura County District Attorney charges allege that Caliboso was intoxicated when he struck a motorized scooter being driven by Elva Andrade, with her 7-year-old granddaughter, Nevaeh, riding on the back. Andrade died at the scene; the child died later at the hospital. Caliboso was arrested at the scene. Caliboso entered his not guilty plea on Feb. 23 and is out of custody on $100,000 bond.

Brock’s 30-year-long career in rock began when he dropped out of school and moved from his home in New Hampshire to Los Angeles. He started working at the now-defunct Cherokee Studios in the late 1980s.

One of his favorite memories from the studio involved picking up food for Gene Simmons of Kiss, who he didn’t recognize without his trademark makeup until he saw Simmons’ name on the credit card he gave him to pay.

“We all have these moments where we meet our fate,” Brock said. “[When] there’s this weird sort of connection between what seemed so far away and what’s right in front of your face.”

For decades, Brock played in a rotation of Southern California-based bands, and he’s stayed involved in the scene as it’s changed over the years. While he’s made efforts to invest in the infrastructure for young artists in Ventura to perform and collaborate — even renting space in a warehouse across the street from Art City Studios for any in-need musician — he’s also seen music production become more democratized.

“We were recording . . . in rooms that were way outside the reach of any independent music-person to be able to step in,” Brock said. “Now anyone with a minimal amount of effort can throw a track up. You can make an argument music suffers because of that, but you can also make the argument that music is more vibrant and open because of that.”

he best thing about Busy Bee Cafe is its vintage charm. The ’50s throwback diner has all the style of an old-fashioned soda shop, with round stools at the counter, black and white checkered flooring, lots of chrome accents and vinyl booths in a classic candy apple red — each one sporting its own mini jukebox with a selection of oldies but goodies. It has a menu to match: all the milkshake, malt and sundae options; egg creams, phosphates and ice cream sodas; and even flavored Cokes. And for food, there’s breakfast all day plus sandwiches, burgers and fried things galore, many available in full-sized or the more modest (and cheaper) “blue plate” portions. What’s not to love?

You can enjoy Busy Bee’s retro eats (if not decor) on its outdoor dining space on Main Street in Ventura. Better yet: Take the vintage flavor home with a to-go order, courtesy of the restaurant’s own delivery service.

The online takeout/delivery website is still under development, but the menu is online (www.busybee.cafe) and the phone gets picked up promptly. The person I spoke with was exceptionally kind and patient, answering all my questions thoroughly and graciously accepting my hemming and hawing. With her help, I settled on an Oreo milkshake and a chocolate malt, a blue-plate size of Ed’s one-half chicken basket, the barbecue chicken breast burger, a foot-long hot dog and an order of the loaded potato skins. There are some healthier options, like a primavera pasta and some nice salads, but if you’re going to a diner, you might as well embrace the experience.

I was given a 45-minute delivery time; it was closer to 30 and the food arrived hot and fresh, thanks to an exceptionally nice delivery person. Everything was packaged well; not a single item leaked, spilled or got mangled during transport.

The food was very much as expected: American classics that didn’t break any barriers, but satisfied nonetheless.

Unsurprisingly, the shakes were the highlights of the meal. Busy Bee makes some of the best in town, and both were rich, thick and delicious. Lots of Oreo cookie flavor for the one; the other had plenty of chocolate but not near enough malt. They’re also enormous — just like everything else on the menu.

The chicken basket came with three pieces of fried chicken, a mountain of fried potato wedges and a biscuit. That was the blue plate size — and it was easily enough for two to share, or one hungry person’s dinner and some leftovers.

It’s also some of the crispiest fried chicken I’ve had. The texture of the meat inside was good: not overdone, still plenty juicy. The flavor, however, was underwhelming — I’m not

My personal favorite was the hot dog, loaded with meaty chili and cheese. Again, enormous. The menu boasts that it’s enough for two, and I would not disagree. And, unlike some of the other items we ordered, it was packed with flavor.

I distanced myself from my group of girlfriends, meaning I missed birthday parties, didn’t respond to group texts, and was overall not a great friend. Still, I did what I could, like taking a friend for a spa day after missing her birthday the week before. Weeks later, I learned she was still harboring resentment that I had missed her birthday. Don’t I deserve a bit of a break?

On the day of your friend’s birthday, you felt like quite the party animal — if, by “party animal,” we mean “rat lying cold and dead in the corner of the cage.”

Depression gets a bad rap. It can be a terrible, dysfunctional thing when it’s caused by brain abnormalities or persists without end. However, psychiatrist Randolph Nesse explains that human emotions, including the feelbad ones, are psychological programs that evolved to solve recurring mating and survival issues. When you’re mired in frustrating, unrewarding endeavors, symptoms of depression like sadness, hopelessness, and fatigue appear to have a function. They slow you down, plant you on the couch, and force you to rethink and change unworkable situations in your life: dump that jerk, stand up to your boss, fake your death and move to Croatia.

Sadness is also a strong social signal. When we see someone’s sad, we’re motivated to comfort them (or at least cut them some slack). In an ancestral environment, countless centuries before apartments with locking doors, your friends would have noticed you were depressed. In a modern environment, suffering often

remains hidden. In other words, it’s possible this woman and your other girlfriends assumed you were socially sloppy, inconsiderate, and a bad friend — instead of understanding that you were a friend in need.

Take stock of the girlfriends around you and figure out whom you can trust to be real friends to you: those you can show who you really are, including all the sobby parts. Friends like that will mop up for you socially (in tactful ways) at times when your answer to, “Hi, how are you?” is likely to be: “Actually, I’m going to die alone, and then nobody will discover the body until the UPS guy comes to the wrong house and nearly keels over from the smell.”

Bad Harem Day

I’m a 31-year-old woman, and I recently started dating a guy about my age. We’ve gone on five dates, but we haven’t had sex, as I wanted to take things slowly. He’s been okay with that, but I’m quite certain he’s sleeping around elsewhere. I hate the idea of him having sex with other women. Still, we aren’t at the level of being committed, and I’m not comfortable having sex with him yet. What do you recommend I do?

The “hate” you describe feeling at the idea of him having sex with other women is actually jealousy — specifically, “sexual jealousy”: a stew of dark emotions (including humiliation, rage, despondency, and grief) that gets activated by the perception that a romantic relationship is at risk. Jealousy gets sneered at as some sort of pathetic emotional immaturity that’s to be avoided, a la “C’mon...be bigger than that.” That advice is like telling the police to ignore alarms going off in banks, which, sure, are sometimes false, but can be a sign there’s a cash transfer in progress — to the duffle bags of three gun-brandishing dudes in Richard Nixon masks.

Like bank alarms, sexual jealousy has a vital function. It triggers “mate-guarding” behavior: tactics to fend off threats “to a valued romantic relationship” that could lead to “infidelity or abandonment,” explains evolutionary psychologist David Buss.

Mate-guarding tactics frequently used by women include “monopolization” (like bolting oneself to a partner at a party), “appearance enhancement”

(hotting up to outdo any lurking competition), and “sexual inducement” (performing “sexual favors” to keep a partner around).

In other words, the discomfort you feel is a call to action loaded into you by evolution. But evolved motivations aren’t behavioral mandates.

Resolving to just suck up and ride out the discomfort seems the best way to avoid responding in ways potentially damaging to your long-term interests.

Letting fear of loss drive you to have sex before you’re ready could tag you with an air of desperation and/or cause you to confuse lust with love. Being gnawed by curiosity about the competition sometimes spins even normally stable and levelheaded women into crazycakes stalkers. Tempting as it might be to know whom you’re up against, it’s best a new fir tree doesn’t suddenly appear outside the guy’s apartment wearing the same go-go boots you do.
