Exemptions in Ojai’s all-electric ordinance

n Oct. 27, the Ojai City Council voted 4-1 to move an ordinance to a second public reading scheduled for Nov. 10 that would require new construction to be electric only, but would include specific exemptions for restaurants and swimming pools, a loophole that climate activists say weakens the move.

The ordinance, called a REACH code, is aligned with movements across the state to “reach” beyond current state requirements for building in anticipation of meeting strong emission reduction goals and to combat climate change.

Suza Francina, the only city council member to vote no, was pushing for adoption of an ordinance put forward by the city’s Climate Emergency Mobilization Committee (CEMC) that did not include any exemptions, but did allow for an appeal process. The CEMC proposal did include an exemption for new Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) in the footprint of an existing house.

According to a resolution passed last year by the city council, the CEMC has the goal of bringing “high priority strategies to achieve emission reductions at emergency speed” to the city council for consideration.

Michelle Ellison, CEMC chair, speaking during the online Oct. 27 public hearing, said that “blanket exemptions” like the carve outs the council included in the ordinance “dilute the impact of the ordinance.” Instead, she said the committee recommended the appeal process for those applicants who want to make the case that the ordinance is too onerous. The appeal process suggested by the committee would take projects directly to the city council. Committee member Phil White said in his opinion it should be elected officials, rather than staff, that review these types of projects and determine when ordinance provisions are waived.

Councilmembers Williaml Weirick, Randy Haney and Ryan Blatz supported what they called an “incentive” approach to going all electric, and Blatz pointed to conversations he’d had with contractors that all-electric construction can be more expensive over time as a reason for supporting the exemptions in the new ordinance.

doing some commercial construction on Ojai Avenue, who would go with a “recommendation” for all electric if the city took that route instead of requiring it. Blatz emphasized that he felt all electric over time would be more expensive and create an undue burden for some homeowners, contributing to “the overall creep of cost of living” that is impacting the community.

Weirick said that while several cities in the state have adopted similar codes, most have exemptions.

Haney went so far as to say that “all-electric appliances are more expensive than gas appliances.”

In a quick review of residential home appliances through the Home Depot website, there is a wide range of options and prices on gas and electric stoves. Basic level GE brand gas ranges are priced at about $718 to $1,348 (there are more expensive units) with comparable GE brand electric ranges spanning $592 to $772 for a convection-type unit.

Gas water heaters range in price from $539 to $1,800, and electric water heaters $379 to $1,999.

Electric heat pumps, recommended when going all electric, also serve as air conditioning units, save the need for separate heating and air conditioning systems and range in price from about $858 for small single-room units to $3,800 for a complete residential unit system.

Committee members pointed out that in the coming decades as communities transition away from fossil fuel-based energy sources, long term costs will go down.

The discussion did not include ongoing global warming impacts or costs associated with not putting a ban on gas in new construction in place, without exemptions, as recommended by the CEMC. Current Ojai Mayor Johnny Johnston reminded the council of the “existential threat to the future” that climate change presents, and commented that what was ultimately adopted “gutted the whole thing.”

Ellison pointed to 35 other cities in California that have adopted various forms of REACH codes, but Weirick countered that in fact only a few of them, about three, have passed similar ordinances, with the majority including specific exemptions. Ellison clarified that 35 municipalities are taking an all-electric “approach.” Some use an “incentive approach” to encour-

age all electric construction, but that approach is not considered “as ambitious for emission reduction” as requiring all electric in new construction. Others have passed a gas moratorium, which is not what is being suggested for Ojai.

Weirick interrupted her to emphasize that a majority of cities have instead used “certain carve outs...for certain buildings or classifications” to take an incentive approach.

“Each passing day of inaction means more climate disaster,” said Ellison, emphasizing the opportunity for Ojai to “lead by example” and that the CEMC is recommending an approach as ambitious “as possible.”

CEMC member Steve Colome PhD said the committee prioritized efforts aimed at “reducing climate [change] producing gases,” including carbon dioxide and methane, and to identify the “things the city had the jurisdiction to tackle,” while keeping in mind that there must be a “path to eliminating our use of fossil fuels.” He pointed to state emission reduction requirements.

“We have to get there no later than 2050,” he said, and that “some of these issues will be forced upon the city if we don’t act ourselves.”

“It doesn’t matter if we’re one of three” cities in the state to adopt this type of ordinance, said Brian Holly, another CEMC member. “I think we need to be a front runner...even if it creates a little blowback down the line.”

An Oct. 15, 2020 study performed by the Rocky Mountain Institute found “that all-electric new construction is more economical to build than a home with gas appliances, regardless of location.”

NASA announces soil cleanup plan Santa Susana Field Lab would be cleaned up for recreation, residential uses

n Oct. 2, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced its soil cleanup plan for the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL) site in Simi Valley, the site of a partial nuclear meltdown in 1959 and decades of rocket fuel testing. Contamination at the site was hidden from the public, and the fight for the site to be fully cleaned up continues today.

The plan, presented by NASA to California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for review and consent, changes the level of cleanup.

Previous agreements entered into

by NASA, Boeing and the U.S. Department of Energy laid out cleanup requirements that would bring the site to “background levels,” or to its original state prior to contamination.

NASA’s current “proposed action” involves remediating soil contamination in two areas at the site, a former liquid oxygen plant and 450 acres of land, for which NASA is responsible.

According to the Oct. 2 report, NASA has named an option for cleanup called Alternative C, titled Suburban Residential Cleanup, which will mean the area NASA is responsible for will be cleaned up “in a manner that fully safeguards human health and welfare” and “preserves SSFL’s existing and irreplaceable natural and cultural resources to the maximum extent possible,” with the intent of allowing “the areas to be used by future generations for recreational or residential purposes.”

According to the NASA statement, the “best proven soil cleanup technologies” will be used and could include excavation and offsite disposal, or onsite treatment of soil, which would be used as backfill. Onsite treatments being considered at the site include soil washing, land farming, chemical oxidation and thermal desorption.

NASA reports that the cleanup levels being proposed would “be protective for humans living onsite, including sensitive groups, over a lifetime (EPA, 2018b). The exposure scenario for Suburban Residential

Cleanup assumes that both adults and children would be exposed to soil 24 hours per day, 350 days per year, for a total of 26 years, with no threat to health,” meaning there would be a one in one million possibility of someone exposed at the allowed levels to “experience health concerns, such as cancer,” under the Suburban Residential “risk-based cleanup scenario.”

Alternative C is defended by NASA as the preferred alternative because it allows for “greater flexibility” in the type of ultimate land uses following cleanup, claiming it will be “compatible with suburban, residential, industrial and recreational land use.”

The proposed plan will be quicker to implement and will cost about $354 million less than other options.

The DTSC is in the process of reviewing NASA’s plan, and will complete a Programmatic Environmental Impact Report with the option of issuing a decision on NASA’s plan.

Boeing is responsible for cleaning up 1,930 acres and has reported it will be cleaning up to a “recreational” base level.

Demolition of some buildings complete

The California Department of Toxic Substances issued a notice confirming that nine buildings have been demolished at SSFL. Additional abatement, demolition and removals will take place in November and should be complete by the end of December.

Debris will be removed from the site by trucks authorized to carry toxic, radioactive and hazardous waste. The hazardous material is being transported to an out-ofstate disposal facility licensed to receive the debris.

t 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, some Ventura County residents had been waiting over two hours to vote, having been in line at 8 p.m. at two in-person voting locations in Oxnard and one location in Fillmore. The county elections division reported that as of 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, of the 500,442 registered voters in the county, only about 67 percent of voters, or 336,222 voters, had cast a ballot.

In California the official canvass of votes must be completed by the 30th day after the election. Results must be certified and sent to the California Secretary of State on the 31st day.

Semi-Official Results

As of press deadline on the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 4, the 46th U.S. President has not been named as counting of ballots continues in several key states including Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina and Georgia, and neither President Donald Trump or Joe Biden have received the necessary 270 electoral college votes.

The U.S. Congressional 25th District is narrowly held as of press deadline by Democrat Christy Smith, with 51.7 percent of the vote to Republican Mike Garcia’s 48.3 percent.

California State Assembly: District 37 appears easily won by Steve Bennett, current Ventura County Supervisor in District 1. Bennett took over 66 percent of the vote against the Republican candidate Charles Cole. State Assemblymember for District 44 Jacqui Irwin also easily defended her seat with 62 percent of the vote against Republican challenger Denise Pedrow, who received just over 37 percent of the vote.

Ventura County Supervisor: Carmen Ramirez leads Tim Flynn by 3,789 votes (Election Division update 12:38 a.m. Nov. 4) with 69 of 90 precincts reporting.

Oxnard City Council: John Zaragoza has swept the race for Oxnard mayor, taking 62 percent of the vote. Leaders in the current count for the other Oxnard City Council seats are Oscar Madrigal in District 3 and Bryan MacDonald for District 4. Vianey Lopez appears to be strongly defending her District 6 seat, being re-elected with 49 percent of the vote.

Ventura City Council: Joe Schroeder (42 percent) has a tight lead over Nancy Pedersen (39 percent) for District 7. In District 3, Mike Johnson has a convincing lead with 2,791 votes (38 percent) compared with Aaron Gaston’s 1,970 votes. Barbara Brown has 1,738 votes. District 2 has the tightest race between incumbent Christy Weir with 2,850 votes (41 percent) and Doug Halter with 2,981 votes (42 percent); 90 percent of precincts reporting.

Ojai City Council: Current vote tallies give newcomer Betsy Stix 63 percent of the vote for a potential upset of current city council member William Weirick’s campaign for the mayoral seat.

Councilmember Suza Francina is so far narrowly holding off challenger Jeri Becker with a lead of just 64 votes.

Ojai Unified School Board: Current Board Chair Shelly Griffin takes a solid win over first-time candidate Chiany Dri for Area 4. In Area 2, educator Rebecca Chandler with 60 percent of the vote held off Jeffrey Starkweather for an open seat.

Ventura Unified School Board: In what is looking to be an upset, Amy Yamamoto Callahan has 52 percent of the vote over incumbent Jackie Moran.

Do “green” features help sell houses?

ealtors are known for using certain terms to describe homes, and those terms sometimes can have an unexpected meaning. For example, as readynest. com points out, if a realtor describes a home as “quaint,” it could mean cozy and charming, or it could mean tiny and cramped. “Close to transportation” could mean a block from a bus stop, or it could mean next to a railroad track.

Some homes are described as being “within walking distance” of the beach, a park, the mall or some other amenity, but, as George Carlin pointed out in a famous comedy routine, technically, “everything is within walking distance.” It just depends how long you want to walk.

In contrast, the term “green” can have only one meaning if you want it to reliably add value to a home, according to Andy Pletcher, with Century 21 Everest.

Pletcher recently completed training to obtain the National Association of Realtors Green Designation, and she pointed out the importance of using real data to quantify the term “green.” In contrast to the “soft” or “subjective” terms a realtor might want to use to convey a feeling about a property, if you want to make the green features of your home add value to your sale, “you must know how to quantify the economic value of those features as well as speak about the environmental benefits,” she said.

Pletcher uses utility bills to document the savings available. Also important, she points out, is whether solar panels have been fully purchased, or whether the new owner will have to take over a lease payment.

Are you from Ventura County originally?

I was born in the Caribbean on the island of Antigua. I came here when I was 7 years old.

When did you open your business?

I purchased Birkenstock in 1997 from the previous owner. The business has been in the same location in Downtown Ventura for over 42 years.

What inspired you to start this business?

I was inspired by my orthopedic surgeon to buy a pair of Birkenstocks after I had back surgery. I had sciatic pain and was in constant discomfort when I was advised to purchase a pair of Birkenstocks. After wearing them for two weeks the sciatic pain started to subside, and I have been the biggest fan ever since, and a proud owner for over 22 years.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I open at 10:30 a.m. and work until 5:30 p.m. or thereafter. I own and operate my business with no employees. All duties to own and operate a Birkenstock brand name shoe store I do with lust and glee. I absolutely love what I do, and hope I exemplify it in my customer service. We are a full-service store selling Birkenstock sandals, shoes, socks, orthopedic insoles and Vionic® shoes.

We also offer a full repair service. but he also points to other features providing environmental benefit but installed mainly for comfort. For example, a comfort pump, which links to a timer and conveys hot water from a water heater to a distant faucet during times of day, can conserve water while also providing the comfort of instant hot water.

Eric Werbalowsky, a sustainability consultant based in Ventura, emphasized the importance of green features which cannot be monetized. “To progress toward sustainability, there has to be a vanguard, a group of people who aren’t waiting for an emergency to get on board” with environmental measures, regardless of monetary payback. Also, he pointed out, some features considered “green” in a large home may not really make the home “green.”

Roofing is one of the most important environmental decisions the average person might make about their home, and roofing clearly affects value, according to Jerry Vandewater, a retired consultant who testifies as an expert witness in court cases involving roofs. What are your biggest challenges and rewards?

The most challenging aspect of what I do is the current situation that we are experiencing as a nation. The slow delivery of our product due to COVID-19. As a company we have managed to keep things flowing, just at a slower pace.

The most rewarding aspect of my business is helping customers with many foot issues such as plantar fasciitis, Morton’s neuroma, heel pain, hammer toes and circulation problems. Birkenstock sandals are an orthopedic footwear that offers multiple arches throughout the footbed. Our cork footbeds have built-in metatarsal, medial, lateral and transverse arches along with a toe bar for easy gripping and circulation.

Where do you see things going with your business in the future?

God willing, I will still be here 5-10 years down the road selling and educating the next generation about the Birkenstock legacy. al, only about one third of the body of tile is cement. More importantly, tiles are durable, their thermal mass moderates temperature, and the air space between the tile and the roof keeps the roof deck cooler in the summer. Tile roofs are also prized for appearance.

Calling a house, or its features, “green” or “environmentally friendly” can sometimes just be another term used by realtors to convey a feeling, and such claims are legal with housing, but regulation of the term is possible. The Federal Trade Commission regulates terms when used to promote manufactured products.

The FTC’s “Green Guides” call terms like “eco-friendly” a “broad, unqualified claim” designed to “suggest the product has specific and far-reaching environmental benefits” without actually guaranteeing any such benefits.

Besides, just from a grammatical standpoint, can a house or other object really be “friendly” to the environment? People can be friendly.

Objects and environments are simply not “friends,” even if they are compatible.

Coming back into balance

Local growers discuss agriculture’s role in combating climate change

ension is growing between politicians claiming to be “climate leaders”; those who say that enacted policies are too little, too late; and industry sectors lobbying to maintain the status quo. Environmental activists are pushing hard against the fossil fuel industry and commercial agriculture — two sectors that helped build Ventura County but are now being put under the spotlight for activities that contribute to global warming.

“Climate change doesn’t give a hoot who’s president or what we believe. It’s going to do what it’s going to do,” said Brian Rasnow PhD, a lecturer on climate science at California State University, Channel Islands. He teaches courses in physics, astronomy, and one called “Energy and society.”

The class has shifted to focus on the “root of the problem. What kind of technologies could have an impact?” and the politics behind their implementation. While he noted that Thousand Oaks and Ventura County have made good attempts at long-range Climate Action Plans, “none of these plans are aggressive enough in dealing with what’s going to be coming . . . massive climate disruption — droughts, floods and sea level rise. There isn’t the political will to implement at the scale that needs to be done.”

Tina pointed to one issue that she said is negatively impacting the county. “I really feel the emphasis on aesthetics that this county has is completely misplaced.” She said the land use restrictions on ridgelines is a problem. “Yes, something could affect people’s view. What do we do to preserve our air, water and soil? That, to me, is more important.”

She supports the changes and mitigations in the newly adopted Ventura County General Plan but “didn’t see a change” in the focus on aesthetics. “It should be on the bottom of the list. [The look] doesn’t affect the health and safety.”

Building healthy soils

She also didn’t see enough emphasis on trying “to move farmers and ranchers to regenerative agriculture” and felt that there should be incentives to encourage farmers to protect and build healthy soils.

At U4EA, Tina said that, “Where you’re building soil, we use a food forest, plant [crops] under the trees,” similar to the indigenous practice of companion plants grown next to each other. “The three sisters, beans, corn and squash. Beans live and grow up the corn stalk, beans give nitrogen [to the soil] and squash grows along the ground.”

She noted that regenerative agriculture is “contrary to modern industrial agriculture,” which uses “monoculture . . . when they plant all the same thing. It’s easier to harvest, the trees are all the same size so equipment can go through, but it’s not good for building the soil that one plant needs.”

She also expressed concern about efforts to fight Huanglongbing (HLB) disease and the psyllid that spreads it. “The county’s solution has been to spray.

That spray kills bees. So if you have your citrus trees survive, now because of the spraying there is no pollination, no fruit. The idea that we have to somehow dominate nature and bend it to our will, to me is just hubris. We have to work with nature.”

Regenerative farming practices also incorporate animals into building healthy soil. U4EA uses sheep for weed abatement, and their “manure fertilizes the trees,” along with the chicken manure. Chicken “scratching” also provides aeration while maintaining carbon in the soil, which can be lost through traditional tilling. With this type of farming, machines and other heavy equipment can’t be used, and Tina acknowledged that many will say it’s not economically feasible. “If we paid the prices of what food really costs, it would be.”

Keeping food local and selling to the local community would need to be a focus rather than depending on “futures [market] and sending food off to China,” Tina continued, adding that Ventura County is the perfect place to have “demonstration farms” that sell locally. She pointed to the long-time ranching and farming families and the need to recognize that regenerative agriculture practices are “not a threat to their future, but it is the future. We need to transi-

tion to a different kind [ of system] . . . transitioning away from chemicals, it is sustainable for the environment and for our grandchildren.”

She would have liked to have seen more focus on regenerative agriculture in the county’s General Plan, which went into effect on Oct. 15, 2020 and will govern land use in the unincorporated areas through 2040.

While she said that the county is “making some effort to address’’ climate change, she stated that “they need to go further. It if were me, we wouldn’t extract any more fossil fuels. We just stop. We are at such a precipice.”

“We have the potential to be in balance”

Phil McGrath is a long-time Ventura County farmer and chuckles when he says “Anyone who knows me laughs when I say I’m retired.” When asked about climate change, and local efforts to stem the tide, he said many local politicians seem to “get it,” but “they are about 20 years behind.”

In his view, local action should focus on “greening of the planet,” cooling surface temperatures and pulling carbon from the atmosphere.

McGrath grew up farming, as did his father and grandfather. “I don’t take anything for granted. The fact that I’m on a phone that has more computer chips than the first Apollo mission . . . I’ll never forget my dad saying in the mid-60s that there is too much affluence in the world . . . People, and their schedules, and their cars, and their air conditioners, and their everything that everybody does — we all keep putting carbon in the air . . . Anytime anyone buys a piece of fruit from Santiago, Chile in January, nobody is thinking of what the true cost of getting that peach 10,000 miles north is.”

He has seen climate change be a major topic in the county for about 20 years. “We have supervisors who claim they are environmentalists, they want to do the right thing and people’s livelihood are also in the balance.”

“A long time ago, someone told me that some people think that the demise of Planet Earth [began with] agriculture 10,000 years ago. Once we started trying to tame Mother Nature, it threw off the balance.” But, he added, “As much as we have impacted the planet, we have the potential to be in balance with it.”

He said carbon sequestration is the key. “Keeping the soil cooler and full of life, microbial life would be a huge first step.”

“The first 10,000 years, ag did pretty good. It was organic ag. Populations were not growing as fast. But the last

70 years since WWII, it’s a whole different story. We are all about yields and productivity and the farmer is just trying to cover his cost and making a living out of farming.”

McGrath said the focus should be on the demand side, educating the consumer, but also points to steps local government can take.

According to McGrath, industry responds to consumer demand, providing what people want, when they want it and how they want it. “This is the mission of the industrial world, industrial agriculture. People think that I’m talking about so many sacrifices, but I’m not. It’s basic things. One is eating locally, eating in season. It is so basic to me.

We have to slow it down.” Climate change is showing us that “Mother Nature is coming back with a vengeance.”

Water wars and climate change

The year his mother died was 2007 and McGrath recalled that was the “last year we had an exceptional amount of rain.

A really nice, wet year. The following 10 years was the longest recorded drought in weather record keeping in Ventura County. “In 2008 we had the great recession and many people are still recovering from that.” He said those ten years “were tough years for my business.”

The use of “high water crops” that are in high demand and can yield profits for growers have been a focus of the industry in the county for many years. He says this has led to “water wars with farmers, municipalities and the industry in general. It’s not a pretty picture right now. But everybody needs to come together for a solution.”

Acreage devoted to strawberries has declined in the county drastically over the past 20 years. McGrath said it used to be 12,000-14,000 acres, compared with just around 8,600 (2019 Crop Report) acres today. “Mainly it’s about supply and demand. There are [now] cheaper regions with more water” where strawberries are being grown.

“Mother Nature [ensures] the berry comes into season for such a short period of the year. Bears would eat them when they came out of hibernation. They have a lot of sugar.” But strawberries are in demand year round and growers are meeting it by growing a plant from the alpine region at sea level.

“So the consumer needs to be educated about what they are demanding from us. We can do it, but do we really want to?

We can grow most anything on a year-round basis here, but we are taxing Mother Nature.”

Pinning hopes on hemp

McGrath expressed frustration over policies that limit the ability of local growers to take advantage of a plant that has a wide range of uses, requires very little water and almost no pesticides and has high demand backing it: hemp.

He said the government needs to step in, but that farmers should be allowed to grow this versatile plant, calling it the foundation of a new industry. It can produce biodegradable plastic, reducing the need for one of McGrath’s “pet peeves, single use plastic. Other local com-

panies back the plant. Patagonia said ‘grow it. We’ll buy it.

We don’t want to import from China.’ There are medicinal uses. Hemp has so much potential. It remediates the soil, by pulling toxins from it. Local government regulation can stifle this industry. Finally, there is this crop, with a ton of potential. But we are dealing with local politics on it.”

Industrial hemp offers a unique solution, and he understands some members of the public have an issue with the smell. But he points out the strongest odor is only “for a few weeksand with good ag practices it can be mitigated.” Last year the county responded to complaints about the odor by passing an urgency ordinance that resulted in more than 40 percent of the crop being “wiped out.”

“It is such a magical crop, it is food, fiber, fuel and a carbon sequester,” said McGrath. He said other local growers like himself are advocating with the county to be able to grow this crop with so much potential.

Fallowing land

“I drive the Oxnard Plain every day of my life. I know where they are fallowing farmland...the land is open, nothing on it. Our community should be helping farmers to plant cover crops to cool the surface of this planet on land being fallowed.”

McGrath said there will be more fallowing in the future and if “this county wants to do the right thing, let’s all help farmers grow cover crops.”

“With an average year of rain we can grow cover crops without using water.” This would “cool the soil surface and capture the carbon and put it back in the ground...Farmers in this county are some of the best stewards of the land that I know, but consumer demand makes us grow things that are stressful on the environment,” He sees Ventura County as very capable of getting it right.

“For the direct markets on our farm we grow things in season, organic,” McGrath said, and they sell to direct markets, farmers market and through local CSAs. His produce is part of CSAs that can be purchased within a 100-mile radius. “We have a 100-mile localvore goal...We could [ all ] easily eat within 100 miles. Demand should change,” and that will take “a whole lot of education.” He said Los Angeles County is working on programs like this; he’d like to see Ventura County follow suit.

McGrath serves on the Board of the Los Angeles Food Policy Council. “There are whispers going on right now... that communities should be eating what they grow. Almost like it should be required.” He said that if just 35 percent of what people ate was grown locally, it would have a huge positive impact on the environment. He suggested that requiring food distributors and restaurants to buy local is something the county and cities should start discussing.

“Whole Foods markets, restaurants, Vons, Ralphs . . . requiring them to buy local, making it a law - that would change the world.”

Arcelia Martinez was recently named “Artist in Residence” with the Oxnard Performing Arts Center to launch the effort called “The Esperanza Project.”

It will culminate in the creation of a documentary film next spring, telling stories of young Latinas overcoming mental health challenges.

Monthly meetings called “Sin Verguenza,” or “Without Shame,” will also allow young Latinas to share their struggles via Zoom, and inspire each other through art workshops.

“Once [one of the members] recommended it and said it was great, I said, ‘let’s do it,’” he says.

The Nebraska natives are ready to unleash their pent-up energy, equal to those days 30 years ago, Hexum says.

“I think there will be a lot of joy uncorked since we’ve been itching to play for so long,” Hexum says. “We have an amazing crew and production manager who’s going to design a killer-looking stage to make sure it’s visually worth it and custom designed for the unique stage setup we have.”

This year, 311 was slated to tour in support of its 30th anniversary, which was waylaid because of the coronavirus. As part of the celebration, 311 is sharing congratulatory messages on its YouTube channel from fans and celebrities like Venus Williams.

“She’s an inspiring person to know,” he says. “She’s taking some inspiration from us. That feels good.

She came out in Florida early last year and she said, ‘I’ve known you for a long time. I remember what it was like when I first heard the words to ‘Flowing’ on the radio. The words moved me so much. It’s nice to see someone else is going through what I’m going through.’

“That was her gateway to get into the world of 311. She’s come to a lot of shows. She saw us once and brought Serena, who brought Common. I thought this was the coolest backstage scene.”

Hexum, 50, has a photographic memory. For example, he vividly recalls the moment he realized 311 was more than a hobby. It was a career.

It was the band’s first show, June 10, 1990, at Sokol Auditorium in Omaha.

“The first show we had we opened for Fugazi and the place just erupted

into a wild mosh pit,” Hexum recalls. “I thought, ‘We’ve got something.’ It was that early in our career. I knew we tapped into something really special. I thought, ‘We just have to get out there and play for people.’ Everyone was ready to move out to California together.”

The plan worked. In three decades, 311 has released 13 studio albums, 10 of which reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart. Nine of its radio singles reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s alternative radio chart.

The road dogs played more than 2,000 shows — including 11 311 Day events and six Caribbean cruises — across the nation and 27 countries.

In mid-August, 311 launched a ninepart webisode series called “30 Years of 311” that is posted on 311’s online social channels on Wednesdays. It features 7-minute video clips spanning 311’s career.

“The pandemic has given us time to take stock at how blessed we are,” Hexum says. “When you think about how wild the early shows were, we’ve changed a lot over the years. We’re always improving.”

Hexum says playing in drive-ins, such as the upcoming show in Ventura County, is a thrill for him.

“Everybody gets to be very close and we’ll have space to run around in a new setting,” he says. “Drive-ins were a big part in Omaha, Nebraska. We had a huge station wagon, kind of like the one in Chevy Chase’s Vacation movies.

We would turn around backward and go and watch double and triple headers and the ‘Let’s all go to the lobby and get snacks’ song. I have very fond memories of going to the drive-ins in Omaha. To be the entertainment at the drive-in is really cool.”

Fickle-Down Economics

I’m a 29-year-old straight woman.

I recently came to the odd conclusion that I have no idea what I want in a man. Over the past few years, I’ve been dating a variety of guys and hoping they’ll be right for me, and it’s not working. Some turn out to be nice guys, but some turn out to be jerks. One turned out to be a truly terrible person, but in hindsight, all were obviously wrong for me.

In each case, the underlying problems were always there, but I didn’t identify them until things blew up months into the relationship or even a year in. How can I get clear on what I want?

Looking for a boyfriend without knowing what you want in a man is like trying to order a meal without knowing what you like to eat: whether you live to put bacon on your bacon or you’re a vegan who stifles a sob whenever your mom cracks an egg for your dad’s omelet.

Standards are our tool for narrowing down what we want, from lunch to love. In love, it’s important to shrink down your potential partner pool, but without setting such high standards (per your own mate value and the current mate “market”) that the only boyfriend or girlfriend you’ll ever have is the imaginary kind. Though we tend to view having more options — “Sky’s the limit!” “The more, the merrier!” — as better than having just two or a handful to choose from, research actually finds that having numerous options is often the stuff human misery is made of.

Perhaps because the psychology currently driving us evolved in environments where situations rarely offered more than a few choices — “Bison breast or drum-

stick?” “Eat this bug or starve?”

— research on decision-making has found we are unprepared for huge sets of options. We tend to suffer “choice overload”: We get overwhelmed, choose poorly, and regret our choice afterward.

However, there’s a caveat. More choice can be better, explains psychologist Benjamin Scheibehenne and his colleagues, when, prior to making a choice, a person has “well-defined preferences.”

That’s where standards come in.

Our standards for what we want in another person come in large part out of our values, though personality and genetics also play a role.

Values are the principles we care most about: the standards we use to guide our behavior. Though most of us probably think of ourselves as good people with good values, the truth is, if asked to quickly name our values, we’d struggle to do it.

Being unable to immediately call up our guiding principles means when we need to act quickly, we’re often clueless about what we should do, and we’re prone to act in ways we end up regretting.

Spelling out your top eight or 10 values will give you a behavioral map: guiding principles for how you’ll act and, ultimately, who you are. To write your list, you might look up “lists of values” online.

Here are a few of mine (not in any order): 1. Courage. 2. Wisdom. 3.

Kindness. 4. Integrity. ... 10. Seizing life (instead of blinking like a cow while it rushes by).

The person you want to be shapes the sort of person you should be with. For example, per my list of values, integrity is vitally important to me. So, when I came up with my standards for romantic partners — my “musthaves” for any man in my life — integrity was baked in: “Tall, evolved man of character who thinks for a living and cares about making a difference in the world.”

Likewise spelling out your standards for a romantic partner and vowing to stick to them should help you extract yourself when you’re magnetized by a Mr. Tall, Dark, and Manipulative: some hunky charismatic creep whose hotitude acts as a sort of sexual eclipse, blocking

out what a terrible person he is.

Assuming you include integrity in some form on your list, turning to your “must-haves” on a date forces you to look for evidence of good character, and when that’s missing, you’ll nix the guy and move on.

Of course, being clear on your values and narrowing down what you want in a man won’t always be enough. There are some clever sociopaths out there who are pros at hiding who they really are. Coming up with standards for character might not allow you to identify all dignity-crushing exploiters immediately. However, you should be able to do it much faster than with a more “open-minded,” hope-driven approach: “Sorry, but I really have to draw the line at dating a man with a tail!” ©2020, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved.
