Feds to assess Casitas eagle site Concerns about nest disturbance prompt response

n response to concerns that the nesting, mating and egg laying of the resident pair of bald eagles at Lake Casitas could be disturbed by visitors coming too close to the nest, federal officials with the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) are scheduled to visit the site this coming weekend.

Mike Flood, general manager of Casitas Municipal Water District, confirmed that DFW officials will be coming to “assess” the site during the Feb. 27-28 weekend.

Flood clarified that the lake is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation, a federal agency.

Over the weekend of Feb. 21-22, local observers of the nesting site became concerned that the female, called Hannah, was being disturbed by large and noisy groups of people, including photographers, visiting the nesting site and getting too close. The timing was particularly worrisome for eagle enthusiast Judy Spaar-Hillewaert, as recent mating behavior and changes in eagle activity indicated that egg laying could be imminent. The eagles are particularly vulnerable to disturbance during that time.

While lake officials had closed the roadway that winds up a short hill to the nesting site, people still can walk in. There are some signs that say “sensitive area, do not enter,” but many people ignore the signs. On the south-facing hillside, down from the nest, is an area where the rules are unclear.

In response to concerns raised,

officials had put up tape to block off that area to create a larger buffer for the nest. Rangers at the lake are also conducting more regular patrols of the area.

On Tuesday morning, Flood said that there’s “been a lot of attention” on the eagles due to local newspaper coverage and social media postings about their mating. He cited the good weather as contributing to bringing more people out. Flood also noted that they have instituted a 500-foot buffer, and referred questions about the buffer distance to DFW officials.

As of press deadline the DFW has not responded to inquiries.

In 2007 bald eagles were removed from the list of federally threatened and endangered species, but they are still protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act (Eagle Act), which “prohibits anyone from taking or disturbing bald eagles and their nests.”

On Saturday, Feb. 21, Spaar-Hillewaert was at the nest in the early morning at a spot far enough away to not disturb it. She is one of the local photographers who monitor the nest and document eagle activities, and also founded the Lake Casitas Eagles Facebook page in 2013 where many of the photos are posted.

The female, Hannah, is a new arrival at the nest, as she made it her home last year after the resident female was driven off by a different female. Hannah became the adoptive parent of the eaglet then in the nest. Now, successful mating

behavior has been witnessed and the pair appeared to be getting ready for an egg.

Spaar-Hillewaert has been at the nest every morning at about 5:30 a.m. since November, documenting the onset of mating behavior. “She always tolerated where I was. When others arrive,” and move closer, “she would go for the day.” “Daddy, or Mr. Majestic” appears to be less bothered and will sometimes remain at the nest. But Spaar-Hillewaert recalled that last year, when Hannah was helping to care for the eaglet she adopted, she would leave the nest when people were around.

According to Spaar-Hillewaert, Hannah seems to have “become slightly more tolerant of people,” and doesn’t seem bothered by “one or two people walking up the hill, as long as it’s quiet. If it’s loud, she’s gone.”

Spaar-Hillewaert points out that the permanent signage at the lake is often missed by visitors. A pair of women that arrived over the weekend didn’t even know the eagles were there, and were surprised to learn their voices and activity could disturb the eagles. They were happy to remain quiet.

When a large group arrived on Saturday with about six vehicles, however, Spaar-Hillewaert spoke to them and mentioned that the eagles were likely preparing for egg laying. She said they disregarded her suggestion and walked farther up the hill, closer to the nest. The noise stressed Hannah

and she left the nest.

Spaar-Hillewaert is concerned that if she is disturbed too much it could prevent an egg from being laid. She has stopped posting to the Facebook page until local officials take actions to protect the nesting site.

The egg-laying period is described as a time when the birds are “very sensitive” to human activity and even short durations of disturbing activity “may cause nest desertion and abandonment of territory for the nesting season.”

(1) The Eagle Act makes an initial disturbance a misdemeanor that can result in a fine of $100,000 ($200,000 for organizations) and imprisonment for one year. A second violation is a felony and penalties increase.

The National Bald Eagle Management Guidelines defines “disturb” as “to agitate or bother a bald eagle or golden eagle to a degree that causes or is likely to cause, based on the best scientific information available, injury to an eagle,

a decrease in its productivity, by substantially interfering with normal breeding, feeding or sheltering behavior or nest abandonment, by substantially interfering,” with the activities of the eagle.

Buffer areas around nesting sites are one of the recommended measures the guidelines lay out to prevent disturbances.

On Monday, Feb. 22, Spaar-Hillewaert had seen more egg laying behavior. “Their behavior was like it’s been for the last week,” indicating they could be “ready to lay eggs.” She saw Hannah spending more time in the nest; the male was bringing dried grasses. “Dried grasses are important for when eggs are going to be laid.” The soft material is used by the raptors to make a “little nest bowl” called an “egg cup. It has to be just right.”

If not, where did you grow up?

I was born into a non-surfing family deep in the heart of Los Angeles far from the beach. My dad was a cop and my mom was a teacher. I didn’t have the privilege of experiencing surfing until I was 12 years old. When I did, It changed my life forever, radically.

And became all I could think about as a boy.

When did you arrive in the area, and what brought you here?

My next door neighbor was older than me by a few years and drove me to the beach with him and his friends during the 1980s, during a time when the tri-fin had recently been invented. Surfing was huge and everyone was wearing bright-colored wetsuits. You never saw anybody wearing black wetsuits back then except for small groups of wealthy thug locals at a few random beaches . . . very different from today in that aspect. It was a super-happy era full of positive energy and a changing of the guard from the longboard and single-fin designs to that of the shortboards. It was new and everybody from everywhere wanted to be part of it.

the most amazing place in the whole wide world. When I got my driver license, I drove up to Ventura as much as I could.

When I turned 18 I began a solitary odyssey of surfing the places I had seen in the magazines of the day. I moved to Australia and lived out of an old ’69 beat-up $500 car. Somehow that tin can made it halfway around Australia’s coastline, surfing from the Great Barrier Reef on the northeast coast through southern Australia. Working odd jobs, sleeping on the beach, meeting new people, surfing every spot. I relocated to South Africa for a winter where I ended up seeing Tom Curren surf J-Bay for the first time, which was unreal. Then bounced from Hawaii, to Mexico, to San Clemente where I landed a full-time shaping job. Even after trips to Indonesia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Peru, Fiji . . . my heart always loved the early memories of Ventura the best.

When did you transition from a passionate surfer to a board shaper?

I used to watch guys shape boards for me as a boy, since that was kinda the only way it was done. You would cruise over to the shaper’s spot and talk with them about

of mouth, and just doing something long enough, I guess, to need to open your own factory. When that time came, I knew of all the places in the world where I wanted it to be. The same place that 12-year-old kid came to visit that changed his life forever: Ventura.

Is there a particular aspect to your work that you especially like, or some memorable projects you have worked on?

I love all the different, unique and special everyday people that I get to meet and interact with; making all kinds of different custom boards for surfers all over the world that need a one-of-a-kind board that suits their level of surfing, the waves they surf, and the direction they want to take their surfing. Surfing to me is not a one-sizefits-all, mass-production operation where you put out the same units and spread them out as much as you can. We actually have a motto at the factory: “One day at a time, one board at a time, one surfer at a time.”

Less corporate, more personal; fewer units, higher quality is how we like to roll. Our other motto is: “Work Hard, Stay Humble, Be Grateful, Bless Others.”

Todd Proctor. Photo by Miah Klein have. This to me is very encouraging; to see a subculture not live in fear and to continue living life. I think this is why surfing is thriving during a time when much of the world has gone into hiding.

Are you seeing experienced surfers surfing more, or is it more people taking up surfing?

Personally I’m seeing experienced surfers surfing more. Many people are out of work, out of school and needing hope. Anyone who has been surfing their whole life will tell you that surfing is a huge part of life itself. When the world seems to have gone crazy and it feels like all is crumbling around you, that is a time to go surfing.

What do you think draws people to surfing?

Being free to go and move in nature, and be healthy and feel all the energy that the ocean offers being harnessed under your feet.

You become part of the energy of the big picture. You commune with the source of it all.

And it makes you a better person.

What are some of your favorite surf spots, in the county or otherwise?

I love them all on their given day. We live in an area of such broad wave variety that it really depends on the swell direction, the wind, the sandbars, the tide . . . All these factors determine where you’ll choose to surf on any given day. Plus, I like to keep my faves my faves; those are sacred times for me.

It was winter time and he said that was when Ventura got good. So, off we went, and I’ll never forget that day. It was like driving into heaven for a kid. Everywhere I looked there were the most perfect waves I’d ever seen, and the open spaces and green cliffy mountains and long pointbreaks had me in disbelief.

We surfed Little Rincon and then Rincon. It was an off-day for the locals, so it was really uncrowded, everyone was surfed out from the previous days, but it was the best waves I’d ever surfed. …On the drive home in my friend’s rusty, rattly VW bus that smelled like gasoline, I remember thinking this has to be 6— — February 25, 2021

where you surfed and stuff and they would build you a custom, shape it right there on the spot, and if you wanted to watch you could. I always liked that even after the board industry kinda got more corporate and less personal; I just always liked that one-off custom approach. When I was 19, I shaped four boards in my grandpa’s backyard in a woodshed.

When did you open your business? How did it develop?

I handshaped for other labels before starting my own thing in my late 20s. It took a long time, like a decade, to build up enough momentum exponentially by word

I’ve seen a lot of hurting people this year.

With what’s going on globally, people are feeling the strain of pressures being placed on them that they’ve never experienced before.

Many people are needing hope. And of all the groups all over the planet, I’ve seen surfers being the ones to consider the risks, and deciding not to agree with the lies being perpetrated toward them. Surfers have continued to go surfing, to remain outdoors, to breathe the free air of creation, and have remained healthy and are riding waves, sharing hoots and slapping high fives like they always

Anything else you might like to share with our readers?

The real reason Gavin Newsom opened the beaches is because when the first good swell hit on July 4 of last year, surfers went en masse and surfed like they always have.

Because we knew the truth, we all went surfing. And there was nothing anyone could do to stop it. ‘The man’ had to open the beaches.

And no surfers got sick. No surfers died.

Surfers have thrived over the last year. And we did what we’ve done best for a very long time. And that is to not let ‘the man’ push us around. The rest of the world could take notes from the surfers.

orses are woven into the history of the land now called Ventura County and today remain an important part of the lives of many who still live here, for either recreation, livelihood or both.

Destressing and getting outside are recommended for maintaining physical and mental health in the best of times; horseback riding is a uniquely enjoyable way to do both, particularly during these pandemic days.

Many think equestrian pursuits are out of reach — but that doesn’t have to be the case. With opportunities for trail riding rentals and riding lessons opening up after strict pandemic shutdowns, getting outside with a horse could be just what is needed to soothe the soul.

Here are two accessible and pandemic-safe opportunities for horsing around.

“One thing I see happen a lot,” Spencer says, “[is the client being] really gentle, so gentle that the horse doesn’t understand what they want him to do. Often, that applies to their life. Maybe not standing up for themselves, not being firm enough in setting boundaries. That comes out with the horse. You have to make sure he doesn’t walk over you. If you ask him to back up, he needs to do that.”

People have to realize they can still be a nice person and clearly ask the horse to respond. In fact, the clearer they are, the better response they get. “That’s what is going to help you in life, to get you on your path in life. It shows where we need to firm up, where we can communicate a little better. If they don’t understand us, they can’t do it.”

She laughs a bit when thinking about the connections between a horse responding to “cues” from the person working with them, or not responding. “Whatever you allow, you’ll get more of. If you allow your horse to do this . . . walk over you . . . he’ll do that more.”

Trail etiquette

Horses get the right of way

For safety reasons, if you come across a horse and rider on any trail they always have right of way. Hikers and bike riders all yield to horses.

Anytime you see a horse and rider on trail, say hello.

Whether you’re in front or behind, it’s a good idea to let them know you’re there. A horse is familiar with people talking, but a person walking quietly in the woods looks spooky. If you’re hiking with walking sticks, keep the sticks still while the horses are around. If you have a baby stroller or a baby backpack, just be still and wait for the rider’s instructions.

Bike riders should slow and prepare to stop. If the trail is wide enough and the rider waves you by, it’s ok to ride past slowly. But if the horse looks at all concerned, or the rider indicates a stop signal, it’s best to stop and let them approach and pass you. Keep talking!

On a narrow trail a person on foot or on a bike should take to the outer and downhill side of any trial: If the horse spooks for any reason, it is less likely to spook off trail and down an incline.

If you’re hiking with a dog anywhere in Ventura County it must be leashed. Even horses that are accustomed to dogs may not be used to a dog lunging at it’s legs, which many dogs not familiar with horses will do.

Alert the rider that your dog may lunge and do your best to move away from the horse, giving a big buffer.

When in doubt, stop, say hello and wait.

Saddle Up

Ventura County has some great options for horse owners to get out onto the wide-open trail. Here are a few of our favorites and some options for the non-horse owner who wants to get into the saddle.

Public riding trails

Santa Rosa Valley Park/Hill Canyon Trailhead/Wildwood, Santa Rosa Rd., Camarillo This park and trail system has plenty of trail parking with easy in and out. There are round pens and an arena at the parking lot. The trails vary from wide to single track, flat to hill climbs and at the right time of year there are multiple water crossings. Hill Canyon Trail joins up with Wildwood, a trail that winds between houses for a short distance, eventually coming out on a ridgeline with fantastic views and then drops back down toward the canyon. The areas close to the parking lot can get busy on weekends.

Happy Camp, Moorpark The park has two entrances, with the best trailer parking located off Highway 23. Several loops with wide trails on the flat and through the hills.

Ojai Valley Land Conservancy, Old Baldwin Trailhead, Ojai The Ventura River Preserve has several trail loops that are open to horses with the best trailer parking at the Old Baldwin Trailhead lot just off Highway 150. The trails meander through canyons, meadows, oak stands and creeks. On weekends expect plenty of hikers and bikers.

Ojai Valley Trail, Ventura-Ojai The Ojai Valley Trail reaches from the beach to the mountains and while many are familiar with the bike portion of the trail, the entire length of trail includes a dirt, decomposed granite trail for horses separated from the paved trail by a post-and-rail wood fence. Foster Park is an easily accessible lot for trailers.

Sespe Wilderness, Piedra Blanca Trailhead For the adventurer who is fine trailering a bit farther afield, this trail up the Sespe River is a great option with easy in and out trailer parking.

It’s about 16 miles to the hot springs.

2020’s silver lining can be found on the golf green

yms have suffered, theaters have closed and people are spending more time than ever in front of a screen. There has, however, been one industry that’s grown during the pandemic.

“It’s been a good thing for golf,” says Anna Atwell, director of sales and marketing for Buenaventura Golf Course and Olivas Links, both in Ventura and managed by property management group KemperSports. “It’s definitely a lot busier.”

It’s a countrywide trend. According to the National Golf Foundation (NGF), golf has enjoyed a surge in popularity, particularly from June through October 2020. Compared to 2019, 2020 saw a 14% increase in rounds played, an 8% increase in total participation (i.e. on-course, putting green and driving range play combined) and a net gain of 500,000 on-course golfers (reported to be “the largest lift in 17 years”). And that’s including the closures of March and April! NGF CEO Joe Beditz, writing in the foundation’s Jan. 28, 2021 issue of the bi-weekly newsletter Fortnight, called 2020 an “astonishing year,” saying, “There hasn’t been this much optimism and new activity in the golf business since the turn of the century.”

Active, outside and contact-free

According to Atwell, the courses are seeing an upswing both in regulars who are coming more frequently, and those new to the sport — particularly young players.

“It’s all over the place,” she says. “We’ve always had the normal weekly senior plays — retired folk. We’re getting a lot of junior players, too. They’re looking for things to do outside of Zoom school.”

Summer camps on the golf course have always been popular, but Atwell says that the 2020 summer season was particularly busy: “It filled up very quickly.” Camps will be offered again this summer, with an extra week added.

Atwell attributes much of this growth in popularity to the fact that golf is a contact-free recreational experience.

Courses are outside, with plenty of elbow room, and people are naturally kept separated by different tee times. It’s also active but low impact. Plus, being out in the fresh air

and sunshine just plain feels good.

“It’s a good outdoor activity,” she says. “It’s a daily opportunity to get outside. If you choose to walk, it’s good exercise. Golfing 18 holes means four to six miles of walking, depending on how far you have to go to chase the ball! We have no rental right now, so people bring their own equipment.”

Previously, most golfers at Olivias Links and Buenaventura Golf Course preferred to ride in golf carts. That appears to be changing.

“We’ve had more walkers since the pandemic,” she notes. “We opened back up in May, and it was walking only. Then we only had a few carts, so people often had no choice. Now we have golf carts with dividers. But more people are walking than they did before. They were forced into it for a few months and realized they liked it!”

opinion. “It is an escape. You don’t have distractions, especially if you don’t bring your phone. And it’s quiet. They’re very flat and natural courses; you’re kind of out in parkland.”

Many ways to play

No matter what style of golf you like, these two courses — just three miles apart on Olivas Park Road — offer plenty of options.

Atwell describes Buenaventura Golf Course as “historic, oldstyle parkland with narrower and shorter fairways. We get a lot more senior play at Buenaventura.” Buena Grill offers burgers, sandwiches and a few breakfast items for patio dining or takeout.

Olivas Links has “rolling, undulating fairways. There are fewer trees, but it’s a more natural habitat. It’s longer and more challenging.”

There is no clubhouse at Olivas Links (so no food onsite), but

it does have a driving range and a putting green.

While Atwell says that the courses are busy “from dusk until dawn,” afternoons are quieter — and cost less.

“Starting at 12 p.m., we have our ‘twilight’ discounted rates,” Atwell explains. “Which is earlier than a lot of courses. Afternoon rates are cheaper because you may not be able to get the full 18 holes in. But if you start at or near 12 p.m., you often can do the whole course for the reduced rate.”

Golfing a full 18 holes usually takes about four hours. If you’re short on time, practice long shots at the Olivas Links driving range, or refine short strokes on the putting green.

“If you don’t have time for a four-hour game, you can hit a bucket of balls and enjoy that time, get out of the house and into the fresh air and sunshine.”

Atwell emphasizes that Olivas in particular is a good spot for beginners. The course hopes to open classes in the spring.

“I encourage people even if they’ve never played before to come to Olivas late in the afternoon. It’s a mellow time on the golf lanes,” she says. “If there’s a place to learn that’s not intimidating, this is it. It’s a great place to learn.”

The underwater zen of freediving

T

here’s something about the sea that calls to the deeper side of the soul. That vast, ever-changing, always moving environment seems to pulse with the rhythm of the cosmos, in sync with the moon and the planet’s orbit. If the stars above are an Earthling’s glimpse of the universe beyond, the ocean is the medium that envelopes it all around us.

Swimming, surfing, boating and scuba diving all help us connect with this primal realm. But freediving in particular allows us to breathe along with it.

“You really have to slow your mind down and relax to drop down,” says freediving enthusiast Elizabeth “Lizzy” East, 33, of Ventura.

Mindful breathing

Freediving is, essentially, going into and under the water while holding one’s breath. Divers may or may not use fins, weights, a rope line (to travel down) or a buoyancy device (to accelerate ascent), depending on the type of freediving.

Some divers see it as a competitive sport — based on length and depth of a dive — while others do it for photography or fishing purposes, and some, purely for enjoyment.

But all rely heavily on proper breathing technique to achieve deep, full inhalations for longer breath holds underwater.

“It’s kind of like yoga breathing,” explains Matt Davidson, 41. “What that does is slow down your heart rate and bring you into yourself and the moment. You’re going to get more out of your breath hold if you relax.”

There’s a long science behind the freediving breathing technique, much of it developed and refined by oral surgeon-turned-spearfisher-and-conservationist Dr. Terry Maas.

Done correctly and safely (see sidebar, “Freediving Dos and Don’ts”), it can allow freedivers to go down to depths of 30 feet or more for several minutes.

“It’s very peaceful,” says East. “You have to relax. If you can’t relax, you won’t get your breath down.”

She recalls an early dive where she was feeling nervous and stressed and “couldn’t equalize.”

“Each dive I’d get shallower and shallower,” she says.

Finally, she just told herself to “go out and have fun, stop stressing.” Once she could let go of her anxieties, she was able to equalize and reach her target depth.

“It just goes to show — it’s all in your mind,” East says.

“It really ties into everything . . . you have to be in the moment . . . Things make sense, I can focus. You look back and everything is ok.”

From surfing and scuba to spearfishing

Davidson is the owner of Blue Tuna Spearfishing in Ventura, and has been an avid freediver and student of the sport for well over a decade. He’s explored the underwater realms of Central America, Indonesia and Polynesia as well as his home waters around the Channel Islands.

“I started out surfing,” he says. “In 2005, a friend took me to Monterey . . . I had a pole spear. I caught a perch, took it home and ate it.”

Shortly after that, Davidson took off on a long surfing and traveling excursion. In Samoa, during some downtime when the sea was calm, he’d notice people going out with spears.

He realized “that’s the perfect thing to do” when catching a wave wasn’t possible.

But it was in Indonesia when he really embraced freediving — and the spearfishing opportunities that came with it.

“I started seeing larger pelagic fish, but I couldn’t get them.

I didn’t have the range.”

Freediving Dos and Don’ts

• The most important tip Davidson offers: do not attempt freediving on your own. Freediving is a potentially dangerous activity, and should never be undertaken without extensive training. “I don’t advise that people do it themselves,” Davidson cautions. “Go learn it from A to Z — especially the deep diving stuff.” Blue Tuna Spearfishing intends to resume classes once pandemic restrictions are lifted.

• Never freedive alone. Shallow-water blackout, getting tangled in kelp and other accidents happen, even to experienced divers. A second set of eyes and hands can mean the difference between life and death.

• Remember the surface interval, or time spent at the surface between dives. Generally, surface intervals at a minimum should be double the dive time.

• Consider using a recovery vest, which can be pre programmed for a certain depth and length of time to get the diver to the surface face-up in case of emergency.

• Spearfishers must have valid fishing licenses before embarking; licenses are not provided by boat concessionaires or outfitters.

• Don’t free dive on a big meal and wait at least a few hours after eating.

In Bali, he met a man named Andre who manufactured spearguns. He was also an exceptional freediver and fisherman himself. Davidson would go into Andre’s shop every day, talking to him about freediving, spearfishing, where and what to hunt.

“He became a mentor,” Davidson affirms. “He spent all that time to help me grow and learn. I try to give that back — give people the knowledge.”

When Davidson returned to Ventura County in 2007, he became the exclusive distributor of Andre’s product line — what Davidson describes as an exceptional, high-end speargun. By 2008, he’d opened Blue Tuna Spearfishing, a full-service shop offering wetsuits, masks, snorkels and other equipment (including a variety of gear and accessories that carry Blue Tuna’s own label). Pre-COVID, Blue Tuna also offered classes (it hopes to resume these once restrictions are lifted).

East, who grew up in Oxnard and is now Blue Tuna’s assistant manager, is much newer to the sport, but it has been a life-changing experience.

In 2018, following a breakup, she bought a one-way ticket to Belize and got certified for scuba diving.

“It was something that challenged me and that I thought I’d never do,” she says. “It was a bucket-list thing.”

She traveled across Central America, logging a lot of hours and eventually teaching scuba classes. Her first exposure to freediving was in Honduras.

“We came up from a 30-40-foot dive, and there was a big pod of dolphins in the water,” she recalls. Due to the need to decompress, scuba divers weren’t able to go underwater anymore — but freedivers could. East remembers watching freedivers swim and intertwine with the marine mammals, seemingly at one with the environment. “I could never do that with a tank,” she notes.

In May 2019, she came back to Ventura and continued to teach scuba diving. That fall, she spent a few months in

“So I just started freediving with friends near Malibu,” East says. “I just really loved it. In February 2020, I was going three or four times a week. I was hooked at that point.”

That spring she purchased her first speargun.

“I think it’s pretty cool to go out and harvest your own food,” she says of spearfishing. “It’s the most environmentally friendly and sustainable way to get it, in my opinion.”

Today, she’s cut way back on the amount of meat or purchased fish she eats, and is starting to transition to consuming only the fish she catches herself. She credits the freediving experience with bringing her down that path.

“It changes your perspective,” she says.

Simplicity, discovery, community

Davidson and East have fully embraced the spearfishing opportunities that freediving affords. But they both acknowledge that the sport is about more than the day’s catch.

Without the sounds or bubbles inherent in scuba and snorkeling, freediving is exceptionally quiet; nearly as silent as the fish themselves. It makes for an unparalleled oppor-

tunity to encounter ocean creatures in their habitat, unperturbed by or oblivious to the diver’s presence.

“Because you’re not as noisy, things are behaving as they would normally. It’s like they don’t know you’re there,” says Davidson.

East agrees, noting, “You get so close to the fish. I have a whole new respect for the ocean.”

Both also praise the simplicity of the practice. While there is a variety of gear one can acquire — particularly for diving deep or hunting large pelagic fish — a mask, some fins and a wetsuit will get you pretty far.

“If one of my friends called right now, I could pick up my stuff and get in the water in 20 minutes,” East says.

She’s also found a community through the SoCal Dive Babes, a spearfishing and freediving group made up exclusively of women who share tips, go on trips together and

mentor each other.

“A year ago, I didn’t have any of that in my life,” East says.

Davidson loves that freediving allows him unlimited access to the water. Unlike scuba, which is curtailed by the amount of air in the tank and the need to decompress, “I can stay out there from morning until night,” he notes.

For him, every dive is a revelation.

“It’s not always about going deep. It’s about discovering every reef and every part of the coastline and building that map in your mind . . . It’s always changing and it’s neat to see that change.”

On top of all of this, of course, is the sheer serenity that comes from being one with the ocean environment: quiet, immersed, in harmony with the water and the creatures that live in it.

As East says, “Freediving is this amazing sport that gives you this zen feeling.”

It’s a short walk from the parking lot at the end of Ballard Avenue (take the Ballard Exit and head toward the ocean) to the Carpinteria Harbor Seal Sanctuary aka The Rookery and the trail is absolutely beautiful, with amazing ocean views. My kids enjoy climbing on the fallen eucalyptus trees along the trail. If you follow it a little further, you’ll reach Tar Pits State Park, which is great for tidepooling. Popular with bikers, too. It can get busy, but there’s enough room for everyone to easily spread out.

Potato Harbor Trail, Santa Cruz Island www.nps.gov/chis/planyourvisit/hiking-santa-cruz-island.htm We take the Island Packers boat out to the Scorpion Anchorage at Santa Cruz Island. The Potato Harbor Trail is a 5 mile loop. In just a few minutes you are up on the cliffs and enjoying picturesque views of the island.

It’s easily accessible — the entrance is at the corner of Foothill and Day roads in Ventura — and there’s a lot to do.There are a bunch of trails to choose from, a little playground, plenty of grass for throwing a Frisbee or tossing a ball around and lots of picnic benches for lunch. We always see cool birds and lizards.

The path around the park is about 1.5 miles, and it’s a nice place for a stroll or a jog. It also has softball and soccer fields and a playground. And, of course, there’s the Ventura Aquatic Center — which has some lap swimming, even though the water slides and playground are closed at the moment.

Except for the noise from the 126 Freeway along the north side and traffic along Telephone Road on the south side it 24 —

can be a pretty quiet walk. I usually see some sort of wildlife during a walk around this park. I’ve found that sunrise and sunset are the best times to see rabbits. During the day, the rabbits go home and the squirrels take over. More than once a gopher snake has crossed my path, making its way to the other side of the walkway.

Overhead I usually see hawks and/or condors. Probably hunting for those rabbits, squirrels and gopher snakes.

On rare occasions I’ve seen coyotes and one time was surprised to see a bobcat during an early Saturday morning walk. The bobcat sat near some trees in the distance and kept an eye on me as I walked by. I kept just as much of an eye on him as I passed.

Gently winding paths and switchbacks with so many flowers and plants and interesting vista points. On a clear day, you can see all the way out to the Channel Islands. It’s right downtown, too, so it’s perfect for a brunch-and-stroll kind of experience; just park once and enjoy your urban adventure.

Whenever I have company in town, we try to take them here at some point; I love being able to show them the whole city and the coastline from a short, pretty hike that’s just a few blocks from wherever we’ve parked!

Avenida de los Arboles, Thousand Oaks www.crpd.org/park/wildwood-regional-park/ This is such a diverse area, nestled right up against the suburbs: grasslands, oak woodlands, chaparral, sage scrub, pretty Paradise Falls. It’s part of the Conejo Open Space Conservancy, and there are easy hikes and strenuous hikes galore. We really enjoy walking through the grasslands along the Mesa Trail towards Lizard Rock, and climbing up the ridge. The slope’s a bit rough, but the views are incredible. Shows like Gunsmoke and The Rifleman were filmed here, and it’s easy to see why: You definitely feel as though you’re in the Old West.

Kimberly Rivers, Staff Reporter Potrero John Trail www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/lpnf/recarea/?recid=11043 This trail is just far enough away to really feel like you are getting out there, but it’s only 20 miles north of Ojai off Highway 33. This is a great hike to do when you take the day, so you can enjoy the falls at the end and the small pools along the way. The narrow single track follows Potrero John Creek.

Keeping on trail at some spots is challenging, so just take the time to find the correct trail. The landscape is a great example of chaparral habitat, with stands of live oak and Douglas fir trees, manzanita, yucca and plenty of yerba buena.

The last bit of trail is challenging, as it scales the sides of the canyon and is narrow. Some rock scaling is required, but easily done by the adventurous.

It’s cold now at about 45 degrees even on a sunny day, and the wind can howl down the canyon. Bring a hoodie or a hat!
