Î The COVID-19 vaccine will not give you COVID-19. Î The vaccine protects you from getting COVID-19 or helps make the illness less severe. Î It is backed by medical experts. Î Any side effects are typically mild and disappear within a few days.

Wash your hands frequently.

Î Currently requires two doses (a few weeks apart). Î Getting vaccinated helps your community to stop the pandemic.

Sick? Stay home.

How do I make an appointment for a vaccine? You must be in Phase 1A health care sector or be 65 or older to receive a vaccine at this time. You can make an appointment by visiting www.vcrecovers.org or by calling the registration hotline at 805-477-7161. Vaccines are provided to the County from the State every week. More appointments open every Monday. There are not enough vaccines provided to vaccinate all community members at one time. Vaccinations for all phases will last into the Fall.

CDC updates mask guidance

Car Caravan for CalCare

Correct fit, correctly worn for best protection by Kimberly Rivers

L

kimberly@vcreporter.com

ast week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated guidelines for mask wearing to maximize protection that is provided. Each of the guidelines is aimed at preventing respiratory droplets — which can carry the coronavirus — from passing in or out through the mask. The guidelines included a statement that masks should not interfere with vision and the wearer should be able to breathe easily.

A proper fit

First, check for a snug fit. Make sure the sizing and design of the mask prevents gaps around edges and sides that can let air and respiratory droplets pass through. Using a mask with a nose wire allows the mask to be shaped over the nose to prevent gaps at the top of the mask. Check for gaps on sides of the mask by feeling for air flow when you exhale. When wearing a properly fitting mask, you’ll feel warm air coming through the front of the mask, and the mask may move in and out with each breath.

n Saturday, Feb. 6, Ventura Mayor Sofia Rubalcava participated in a local car caravan hosted by area healthcare advocates working with the California Nurses Association (CNA). Caravans took place in 23 cities across the state as part of a kickoff day of action highlighting the need for universal healthcare and urging state legislators to pass California Guaranteed Health Care for All (CalCare), similar to Medicare for All at the national level.

CalCare would guarantee health care as a human right in the state of California by providing comprehensive, high quality health care to all. The CNA has been leading the fight for guaranteed health care for decades and is actively working to introduce a new single-payer bill in the state legislature. According to the CNA, at least 2.7 million Californians currently lack health insurance. — Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

Multiple layers or use filter

The CDC guidelines suggest that when wearing a cloth mask, it should have multiple layers. If the mask has just one layer of fabric, also wear a disposable mask underneath the cloth mask so that the inner mask’s edges are pushed against the wearer’s face. The CDC clarifies that two disposable masks should not be worn together, and an N95 or KN95 mask also does not need to be doubled up, as those masks have the recommended protection built into their filtration material. In making its recommendations, the CDC relied on information from the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Division of Viral Diseases. Details online at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/effective-masks.html.

Return of the plastic bag as a problem by David Goldstein

I

will avoid saying which fast food place double-plastic-bagged the sandwich I ordered for carry out, tried to give me a separate plastic bag for napkins and plastic utensils, and gave me another plastic bag which enclosed my change. But I will say they sell submarine sandwiches. Really, there is no need to pick on one company for boosting the use of plastic bags during the COVID pandemic. With good intentions, everyone from supermarket clerks to volunteers at free food distribution pantries is trying to avoid physical contact to stay healthy and slow the spread of the virus. Nevertheless, we do have a problem, partly because this increase in plastic bag distribution is coming at a time when plastic bag recycling options are disappearing. The level of public concern about this issue may be measured by noting the five emails I received last week regarding plastic bags. Carol Terpstra, of Ventura, who described herself as “an oldtime, Baby Boomer recycler . . . dedicated to the cause since long before it became trendy or convenient,” emailed me, “Since the pandemic hit, I haven’t been able to find a grocery store or facility that will take my old plastic bags for recycling . . . If there is a way to keep them out of a landfill . . . please let me know.” Similarly, Art Goulet, former director of the Ventura County Public Works Agency and a Camarillo resident, emailed me about his “frustrating” search for bag recycling options. Vons market, 6— — February 18, 2021

0218_VCReporter_NEWS.indd 6

he reported, “removed the small bin they had outside the market because people were using it for trash.” A supermarket manager gave Bob Dawson, of Camarillo, the same contamination explanation for removal of bag recycling boxes but also provided a recycling tip. Some store employees still accept bags from customers, combining the plastic with shrink wrap, which is recycled in the back of the store. However, reported Mr. Dawson in an email to me, “The one and only time I tried that, the Vons employee looked at me as if I were from another planet.” Mr. Dawson then searched, unsuccessfully, for bag recycling at other stores. One store manager misinformed Mr. Dawson, telling him to put plastic bags in his curbside recycling cart. Actually, plastic bags are incompatible with recycling; bags cover recyclables and wrap around automated sorting lines. Lanny Kaufer, a patriarch of the Ojai environmental community, and Joanna Gentry, of Santa Paula, also emailed me this week regarding bags. In the absence of bag recycling options, both had been getting rid of bags by bagging paper in curbside recycling carts. I replied, telling them bagging paper is a mistake which makes recycling more difficult at the sorting center. I also suggested they use bags for waste basket liners, throwing away only bags weighted with garbage to avoid bag “blow-off” litter. The disappearance of plastic bag recycling options is because a provision in the 2006 legislation mandating recycling at loca-

tions distributing plastic bags allowed the requirement to expire last year. According to Lance Klug, public information officer with the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery — known as CalRecycle — a bill introduced to reestablish “at-store recycling,” AB 3141, was introduced last year but “did not advance,” and “the deadline for bill introduction in 2021 is Feb. 19.” I called several stores listed at Earth911.com as recycling plastic bags, and information about Vons and Walmart is no longer accurate, but the Target, Kohl’s, and Lowe’s stores I called still do have plastic bag drop-off containers. What can go in these containers? PlasticFilmRecycling.org, sponsored by the American Chemistry Council, lists the following types of plastic bags as being acceptable in drop-off programs: produce bags; plastic shipping envelopes; bread bags; dry cleaning bags; case wrap (such as the plastic wrapping a case of water bottles); air pillows (used in shipping); newspaper bags; product overwrap (such as the plastic wrap around bundles of toilet paper); and bubble wrap. Ensure no receipts, labels or metal, such as twist ties or paper clips, are in your bags. David Goldstein is an environmental analyst with Ventura County Public Works and can be reached at 805-658-4312 or david.goldstein@ventura.org.

36 farmworkers vaccinated County launches small pilot program by Kimberly Rivers

V

kimberly@vcreporter.com

entura County launched a pilot program last week aimed at administering the coronavirus vaccine to farmworkers and ironing out logistics involved with vaccination administration in the fields. On Feb. 11, 36 farm workers were vaccinated at two avocado orchards. Employees of Kimball Avocados in Santa Paula and Rancho Simpatica in Fillmore are the first to get vaccinated through the county program. “Three maybe four are scheduled for this week,” said Rigoberto Vargas, director of Ventura County Public Health, adding that on Friday the program would hold a press conference at one of the farms where the vaccinations would be taking place. It’s being done on a “very limited basis. I don’t see us doing more than four or five sites in the next few weeks until we get enough vaccine.” Vargas said the county intends to vaccinate about 200 farmworkers each week and currently growers are selected based on the number of workers they have. This week program staff will visit selected growers with about 75 to 100 employees. Vaccine supply is still very limited in the county, with available appointments full. Vargas said that “given the very low amount [of vaccines] that there is overall,” he doesn’t expect an expansion of the program for the time being. A goal of the program is field testing vaccine administration in various settings at the farms and with different growers. Vargas said the county is looking at different processes that might be needed at citrus orchards or berry houses.

“We’ve made a commitment to be ready when the next tier of essential workers” is opened up for vaccinations, said Vargas. That tier will include teachers, grocery and restaurant workers. Logistics getting ironed out in the fields will help streamline vaccine administration at other types of work sites as well. Logistics include set up, registration and what can be done ahead of time versus the day of onsite. For example, special cooler containers are used to transport and keep the vaccines cold when taken into the fields. Sites visited during the pilot program are selected from a list compiled by an agricultural advisory workgroup. The group meets every Friday and includes the Agricultural Commissioner, Farmworker Resources Program (FRP) and community advocates. “It’s really based on size” of the employee list, Vargas explained, and whether “they can host us this week.” While the list is currently full, growers wanting to be added to the pilot program can contact the FRP. According to state data, 55% of coronavirus cases in Ventura County are taking place in the Latinx community, which is suffering 46% of the deaths. Latinx residents make up about 43% of the county’s population. According to House Farm Workers, a Santa Paula-based organization, there are about 42,000 farmworkers employed in Ventura County. Many live in crowded apartment settings that are conducive to the spread of the virus.

A Feb. 4 statement issued by the California Strawberry Commission said the organization is “in communication with all Central Coast counties and encouraging them to allocate at least some vaccines for farm workers. We are also in communication with Western Growers and United Ag Benefits Trust health insurance programs to seek allocations directly from the state.” In comparison, Santa Cruz County also launched a farmworker vaccination program last week that saw 1,000 people vaccinated in the first week at a clinic coordinated by Dignity Health Dominican Hospital, the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau, the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency and the California Strawberry Commission. Santa Cruz County has a total population of 273,213 and agricultural revenue of just over $600,000 compared with Ventura County’s 846,006 people and $2 billion in ag revenue. Two Oxnard College programs recognized Fire Academy takes national award by Kimberly Rivers

O

kimberly@vcreporter.com

n Jan. 26, the Bellwether College Consortium recognized two programs at Oxnard College, the Fire Academy and dental hygiene program, for innovation and excellence. “What makes this honor even more noteworthy is the fact that Oxnard College was the only California institution to have two programs selected as Top 10 finalists,” added Greg Gillespie, chancellor of Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD). Bellwether awarded the top prize in the Workforce Development category for the college’s Fire Academy, which was quickly modified and designed to accommodate a first-of-itskind hybrid learning program as required during the restrictions of the pandemic. The model created in Oxnard was replicated in firefighting instruction programs across the state, helping to ensure aspiring firefighters could continue and complete their education and training so that vital firefighting positions could be filled without delay. During the pandemic the Fire Academy achieved an impressive 100 percent completion rate, 100 percent pass rate on the California State Fire Training certification exam and zero instances of COVID-19 exposures or cases. Joshua Chancer, VCCCD board chair, said, “This honor

recognizes the resilience of the program’s students, faculty and staff and their dedication to working collaboratively across agencies to bring the program safely back after the Stay-at-Home orders.” The Oxnard College Fire Academy is designated by the California State Fire Marshall as an accredited Regional Training Program, which authorizes the program to offer CSFM-accredited level of certification to those who complete the program. The Fire Academy can also give certification examinations for the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress and the National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications. The program is reviewed every five years. The dental hygiene program was ranked as a Top 10 finalist by Bellwether in the Instructional Programs and Services category for an approach called the “Five P’s model,” rooted in emphasizing prerequisites, performance and planning. COIN SHORTAGE ZIP CODE DISTRIBUTION NOTICE

■ CALIFORNIA AREA RESIDENTS CASH IN: Pictured above and watched closely by guards are protected U.S. Coin Packages containing the valuable unsearched Vault Bags that everyone will be trying to get. It’s hard to tell how much these unsearched bags loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins could be worth someday. That’s because each Vault Bag is known to contain nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins some dating back to the early 1800’s, so you better believe at just $980 these Unsearched Vault Bags are a real steal.

If you find your zip code listed below call: 1-800-867-1535 UV3525 “The vaults at Federated Mint are going empty,” said Mar y Ellen Withrow, the emeritus 40th Treasurer of the United States of America. That’s because a decision by Federated Mint to put rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins, some worth up to 50 times their face value, back in circulation means unsearched Vault Bags loaded with U. S. coins dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins the dates were never searched and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Withrow. “But don’t thank the Government. As Executive Advisor to Federated Mint, I get paid to inform and e d u c a te th e g e n e r a l p u b li c regarding U.S. coins. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to put rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins back in circulation, I’m being asked how much are the unsearched

Vault Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and is known to contain at least 5 Morgan Silver Dollars and these coins alone could be worth $35 - $325 in collector value each according to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins. So there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through all the coins. But you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a steal, “said Withrow. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the National Toll-Free Hotline

before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $1,500 for residents who miss the 48hour deadline, but for those U.S. residents who beat the 48hour deadline the Vault Bag fee is just $980 as long as they call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsearched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Withrow. The phone lines will be ringing R1013

“Faith in medicine again” Doctors, patients going off-label to survive COVID by Kimberly Rivers kimberly@vcreporter.com

Last week we ran a story about local and national efforts to increase the support for research into early COVID-19 treatment protocols. We continue our coverage this week. An oximeter checks oxygen saturation in the blood.

T

he coronavirus has changed many aspects of how people around the world live. It’s impacted work, family visits, education, travel, and our view of healthcare. Some who test positive don’t want to take the “wait and see” approach. They want to act. As a result, many people are sharing information and stories of people with COVID-19 that received early treatment outside of the hospital. The treatments are sometimes off-label, so doctors using them have gone a bit rogue. Dr. Sabine Hazan is hoping to transform these treatments from rogue to standard. Hazan, a Ventura-based gastroenterologist and founder of Ventura Clinical Trials and Progenabiome, is testing and using treatment protocols for COVID-19 within five or six days of the onset of symptoms. She closely monitors the status of her patients, who are being treated at home, and every single one of them has remained out of the hospital. She is not trying to buck the system. In fact, she says Food and Drug Administraion (FDA) approval of the protocols is key to ensuring this virus is stopped. Thus, she has three active FDA trials looking at the treatment protocols. FDA approval is vital for doctors to feel comfortable using these protocols on a wider scale. And, she adds, a “cheap” option is needed to ensure all bases are covered as not everyone will be fully protected by the vaccine.

He experienced a few “rough nights, gasping for breath. My daughter was pounding on my back to get me to catch my breath. Then the following week it got to where I could walk a little bit.” Storment tested negative on Dec. 17, but continued to need oxygen and experience shortness of breath for another three to four weeks. “I definitely recommend [the treatment], especially if they have pre-existing conditions . . . If it hits you hard at all, this may be the only thing that will save your life. I’m really blessed that I was able to hook up with [Hazan] . . . I hope that I can help someone else by doing this interview.”

“A step in the right direction”

Names have been changed in this section at the family’s request. Steve and Diane Johnson live in the Bay Area and both tested positive for COVID in early January. Steve is 86 and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about a year and a half ago. He had surgery for colon cancer in February 2020 and had a heart valve replacement prior to that. He was diagnosed in his 50s with arthritis and treated with prednisone for years. He’s had pneumonia a few times, but Diane, 69, said that the pneumonia vaccine helped curb recurrences. Diane and daughter Jennifer spoke with the Ventura County Reporter on Feb. 15. “We had symptoms on Jan. 4,” said Diane. “And cold-like symptoms. Basically a cough. Neither one of us ran a fever. Two days went by, both coughs got worse.” “She’s an optimist by nature,” said Jennifer. “I talked to her multiple times. I was scared, I heard them both hacking all the time. She was hacking on the phone telling me she thinks it’s allergies. I hear my dad in the background like he’s coughing up a lung. She’s so worried about him, she didn’t pay attention to herself. They were both equally sick with the lung part, and they were getting worse.” “We got COVID tests to rule it out,” Diane said, “We had not been exposed to anyone that had COVID, that we knew of.” She said “the test came back two days later, on Friday, the 8th. We

2/16/21 4:47 PM

were both positive. I panicked. When I got the message I cried for half an hour from the fear. I had to fight the fear. I’m not going to sit back and see if it gets worse, we didn’t have that luxury.” She then contacted Steve’s neurologist. “She said you gotta do something about this, fast.” At that point they were at five days past the onset of symptoms. The neurologist introduced Diane to Hazan through a text. “We got all the paperwork in so she could write the prescriptions. We both got Ivermectin,” Diane said. The local pharmacy had enough for the Johnsons to start the medicine and worked with them, even staying open beyond normal business hours that day so they could take the first dose. “He’s known us, and has been filling our prescriptions for years.” “Within 24 hours we noticed less coughing,” Diane recalled. “We were still exhausted and sick.” One day after starting Ivermectin, Steve felt well enough to walk, although he was still sleeping most of the day. Diane felt she improved more quickly. Hazan started Steve on hydroxychloroquine. During the treatment Steve’s blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature were monitored. Hazan checked on both of them about three times a day. “She was amazing. One night I was worried about his oxygen levels. He got worse at night. She FacetTmed with him so she could see him.” But Diane said his levels never got below 90 and stayed around 92 or 93. “We knew about the controversy with hydroxychloroquine. When Trump talked about it, then it went the opposite way,” said Diane. “We knew it was harmless for [Steve] to take, he had been on it for years to treat his arthritis.” She also explained that he had been taken off the medicine when he no longer had active symptoms. She read about Ivermectin online. “It doesn’t look like a harmful drug. It’s more harmful if he ends up in the hospital intubated.” At his age, the risks of him dying from COVID were very real. But following Hazan’s protocol, “every day it was a step in the right direction.” “We learn a lot more as the virus changes,” Diane said. “We heard you don’t get tested again because you’ll stay positive for several months. I’ve had nurses tell me that. But [Steve] was tested 13 days after testing positive. It came back negative. We’ve both tested positive for the antibodies. We did these tests for Hazan’s research. I give credit to [that drug -- is that hydroxychloroquine or Ivermectin?], that probably killed the virus.” Diane said she shares information about their experience if people ask. “I’m so thankful that there are doctors out there doing research.” “It is really scary if you get that diagnosis and the biggest problem is doctors are not doing anything about it,” daughter Jennifer said. “They’re just saying take Tylenol and call if things get worse. Early intervention helps people stay alive, but there aren’t enough doctors given the authorization to prescribe [anything] that actually works. So many people don’t need to die if they were just given this information.” Diane said her experience with the treatment and Hazan, “gives me faith in people again, faith in medicine again.”

“Within two minutes she called”

Juan Ramirez of Oxnard was 62 when he contracted COVID19. His daughter, Stacey Stephens, spoke to the VCReporter on his 63rd birthday, Feb. 16, about their experience being treated at home. “He didn’t fall into the category of being able to get the vaccine,” said Stephens. “This gave us big concerns because of his heart issues.” When he tested positive earlier this month, she knew he was high risk. Ramirez has had an aortic valve replacement, and his doctor has recommended another one. He has atrial fibrillation and an atrial flutter and takes a blood thinner. He has had a few ablations to help stabilize heart arrhythmia. Stephens attended an event for work in late January. “It was super small. I wore a face shield, mask with a filter and gloves. Three days after the event I was called and told I was exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID.” She got tested that night and got her positive result the next day on Jan. 27.

vcreporter.com

“I started feeling symptoms that night.” She and her 3-yearold daughter live with her mom, dad and brother. They all went to get tested. Results were all negative on Jan. 19. She and her daughter went into quarantine at a hotel for nearly a week. “On Feb. 2 in the morning I get a call from my dad to tell me he started to feel symptoms.” He was experiencing a sore throat, stuffy and runny nose. He was tested with a mouth swab and it came back positive. They got the results on Feb. 2 at about 9:30 p.m. “The very first thing I did when I received the email with his results was to call and tell my dad. The very next thing, I called his cardiologist.” Stephens often attends doctor visits with her father. Spanish is his primary language and while he speaks and understands English she said “sometimes things get lost in translation.” His doctors know her. “We are very strong believers in God and it was by the grace of God that night that out of his entire cardiology group, he was the doctor on call.” Ramirez’s doctor, Dr. Alon J. Steinberg, chief of medicine and cardiology at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, also is Hazan’s husband. “He returned my call immediately. He knows us so well, he’s been treating my dad for over 15 years, maybe 20 years. When he heard my voice he knew exactly who I was. I told him ‘My dad just tested positive. I don’t know what to do.’” Steinberg told her to have Ramirez start taking Vitamins C and D and zinc. “But I asked him, ‘is there anything else that we can do for him?’ . . . He told me his wife, who is a doctor, is conducting a trial and treating patients for COVID. I asked him if he thought my dad was eligible. He said ‘yes, let me see if she can call you back.’” “I thought maybe I’d hear from her the next day,” recalled Stephens. “Within two minutes she called.” Stephens said it all happened very quickly. She got the email confirmation of the positive test at 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, she called Steinberg, and Hazan called her immediately. That night they filled out the release and consent forms for the blind clinical trial involving hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin with Vitamins C and D and zinc. Hazan explained that patients don’t know if they’re receiving the placebo with just the vitamins or the medications with vitamins. Both Stephens and her dad started the trial the next day. At 8 a.m. on Feb. 3, the materials and medicine were ready for pick up at Ventura Clinical Trials. Her brother, who still tested negative, went to pick them up. Ramirez quarantined in his bedroom (food was placed at his door). He and Stephens provided stool samples. They took the vitamin “cocktail” and pills (that were either a placebo or the medication) at designated times throughout the course of the 10-day trial. During those five days they journaled about their symptoms and any changes. There was constant monitoring of blood oxygen saturation, temperature, blood pressure and heart rhythm with a special monitor connected to Hazan’s phone so she gets a notification of anything abnormal. All trial participants wear a continuous heart rate monitor on their arm at all times. It

constantly sends information to Hazan and her team so they can monitor patients. Every three days Hazan or her assistant would check in with them. They were watching the oxygen levels particularly closely. Ramirez had constant oxygen levels around 95 — normal for him. On the ninth day of the trial Stephens FaceTimed her father. “I asked him ‘how are you feeling?’ and he told me he had a really bad headache, his pulse ox [oxygen] went down, his cough was really bad.” He also had a fever that day and Stephens notified Hazan’s team. Hazan got in touch with her and indicated that his body wasn’t responding and she wanted to prescribe Ivermectin. This meant that Hazan would now be treating Ramirez as a primary care provider, and technically he was no longer in the clinical trial. Since he was not improving, Hazan did not want to chance that he was getting a placebo. Ramirez immediately started taking six pills of Ivermectin a day for three days, starting that night, and Hazan instructed him to cease taking the trial medication. That night he had cold sweats, diarrhea and shivers. Stephens again contacted Hazan -- who surprisingly answered, “That’s great!” Hazan told her “that is the exact reaction we wanted from his body” because it meant the medicine was working. After a few more nights like the first, he started feeling better and was breathing fine. When he again experienced headaches after taking the Ivermectin, Hazan instructed him to start taking it with fatty food, to increase absorption. “The next day after that he told me ‘Mi hija I’m fine. I feel like it’s the first day that I feel like it’s my body.’” “That’s where we’ve been,” his daughter says. “Yesterday he had a great day.” She said that her reports, “it finally feels like it’s really his body.” Ramirez’s file is still blind in the clinical trial, and Hazan won’t know if he was receiving the placebo or the actual medicines (hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin) until her trial concludes. Stephens hopes the Latino community will get this information. “With this trial we are fighting for these medications to fight the virus at home. What’s special to us is that it’s not treating your symptoms, it’s treating you to fight the virus that’s in your body.” She doubts her father could have received treatment like this in the hospital. “If you can’t breath well the first thing is they connect you to oxygen. That’s when you hear the stories of patients spiraling down, the domino effect within their bodies...I 1,000% believe this [treatment] kept him from being hospitalized. He got treated from the comfort of his own home.”

OSA announces new board members

Ojai Studio Artists recently announced new leadership for 2021-22. Award-winning portrait and figurative painter Duane Eells, a 33-year resident of the Ojai Valley, is OSA’s new president. New Vice President Chris Beirne is a landscape painter who also serves as the office manager and webmaster for Focus on the Masters. Nature and portrait photographer Deborah Lyon has been named treasurer. While 2020 was as challenging for OSA as it was for all arts organizations, with canceled exhibitions and events, Eells said that, “We are looking forward to a new beginning as we venture into the unknown territory of 2021.” OSA hopes to resume its Second Saturday mini-tours in the late spring and has started planning the Ojai Studio Artists Tour for the weekend of Oct. 9. www. ojaistudioartists.org

The Museum of Ventura County seeks public input

The Ventura Music Festival is hopeful that it can present its traditional programming by July 2021. To that end, it tentatively has scheduled six live concerts in celebration of its 26th annual festival, featuring trombonist Aubrey Logan, guitarist Andrea Roberto, world music band Adaawe, pianist Sean Chen, jazz fusion outfit Tom Scott and the L.A. Express, string trio Time for Three and the Django Reinhardt-inspired Django Festival Allstars. Events are currently scheduled to take place July 22-Aug. 1. In the meantime, VMF continues its virtual programming through Music Connects and Virtually Yours. Nuvi Mehta will curate a six-week series of highlights featuring previous VMF artists; Executive Director Susan Scott presents a special “Diva” series; and a selection of jazz favorites will follow after that. For more information and developments, visit venturamusicfestival.org.

The Museum of Ventura County recently launched an online survey to gain an understanding of how it can best serve its community. Of particular interest are ideas on engaging with people virtually while the pandemic keeps the museum closed, and ways to aid the rebuilding of the Ventura County community once restrictions are lifted. To that end, the museum is participating in a national survey sponsored by the American Alliance of Museums and hopes that everyone in Ventura County will take part. According to the museum, the survey should take about 9 minutes to complete. As a thank you for participating, all those who fill out the survey will be entered into a weekly drawing. One of the following prizes will be awarded every week through Sunday, March 15.

Latitudes Gallery of Ventura recently released its newest book, Inspirations. $45 Value — MVC Swag Bag (two mugs, four free passes, four-pack notecards from the Research Library Image Archives, MVC logo lapel pin); $50 Value — Autographed copy of Chris Hillman’s new memoir, Time Between: My Life as a Byrd, Burrito Brother, and Beyond; $60 Value — Free individual/family museum membership or, if already a member, an upgrade to the Associate Level membership (which includes North American Reciprocal Museums membership). Ventura College receives $50K from Carnegie Cornerstones

The Ventura College Art Department was recently the recipient of a $50,000 donation from Carnegie Art Cornerstones. The donation will be used to establish a fund to support the college’s visual arts gallery and exhibition programming, and help foster the education and artistic growth of emerging student artists. Funds will be used for art supplies and exhibit preparation once gallery spaces are allowed to open again. Currently, art students work in a variety of media, including ceramics, sculpture, photography, painting and digital media. The college typically holds six to eight exhibits a year in the main gallery space, and it is hoped that the endowment will enable more students to show their work. The endowment agreement allows the college to decide how exhibits will be organized and how artists will be selected.

Latitudes releases Inspirations

Latitudes Gallery in Downtown Ventura released its third book, Inspirations, in February. The hardcover coffeetable book is a compilation of 144 original photographs taken by professional photographers and gallery owners Stephanie Hogue and Steve Munch. Each beautiful photo is paired with bits of poetry to inspire readers with nature’s magnificence and power. “This has been such a challenging year for so many of us,” Hogue said. “Nature has the power to heal and inspire,

Carnegie Art Cornerstones was originally founded to support the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard. When the Carnegie closed, Cornerstones pivoted to promote artists’ creativity, learning and growth, and inspire appreciation for arts and culture in Oxnard and Southern California. The donation was coordinated by the Ventura College Foundation. “We’re grateful for the Carnegie Art Cornerstones’ generous donation,” said Kim Hoffmans, Ventura College president. “Art plays an important role in our culture and society. The endowment will help the next generation of local artists find their voice.”

The Ventura Film Society (VFS), once lauded for “bringing people together in the dark,” drops the curtain permanently in 2021. Founded by Lorenzo DeStefano in 2008, it has brought more than 400 quality films to cinema lovers through screenings at a variety of locations in Ventura, including the Elks Lodge, Working Artists Ventura (The WAV) and the Bell Arts Factory. “During all that time we have strived to fill a gap by presenting not only entertaining cinema from around the world but films that have helped us discover the world around us,” stated DeStefano in a farewell message via email. “We know from your positive response and loyal attendance over the years that our efforts have been much appreciated.” VFS’ end comes after a year that saw the closure

The city of Thousand Oaks recently announced that the Bank of America Performing Arts Center will remain closed to live events until April 1, 2021, due to the ongoing pandemic. All programs that are on the calendar through March 31 will be rescheduled or canceled. While the venue will not hold live events with audiences, the theatres may be used for filming and streaming opportunities without live audiences. BAPAC will continue to work with TOArts (Thousand Oaks Alliance for the Arts) to present drive-in concerts and movies at The Lakes and Conejo Creek South Park. “Spectacular kids doing spectacular things” Five Cabrillo students selected for All-State Honor Band

ive young musicians from Cabrillo Middle School in Ventura have earned the distinction of being selected for the All-State Honor Band as part of the annual California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC). The conference takes place in Fresno every February, and will be offered virtually Feb. 19-20 this year. “It’s a great honor to be selected and we are more than proud of these students,” said Mario Boccali, music director of Cabrillo’s music department. This isn’t the first time Cabrillo middle schoolers have participated in the CASMEC — in fact, Boccali’s students have been chosen for all-state for 15 straight years. Students continuing the tradition this year are Beatrice “Bea” Barnes (French horn), Lucca Boccali (tuba), Emily Gonzalez (trumpet), Brynn Gray (trumpet) and Kiran Maserang (oboe). Every year in the fall, more than 2,500 junior high and high school students from across California submit recorded auditions in a bid to take part in one of several all-state ensembles, including orchestra, jazz, wind, strings and choir. Of these a few hundred are selected to take part. For the honor band, young musicians are expected to submit two recordings: a set of scales and a solo chosen by CASMEC for their particular instrument. It’s a demanding undertaking. “They have to play the solo perfectly,” Boccali explained. “A lot of hours of hard practice and hard work . . . the solo is very challenging.”

Putting in the work

Boccali provides musicians with the required music and helps with organization, pointers and recording, but said that otherwise he’s mostly “hands off . . . it’s up to them to prepare it.” “By the time they get to that level,” he continued, “they know they have to put in the work.” Emily Gonzalez, a 13-year-old eighth grader who lives in Ventura, has been playing trumpet for two and a half years. She said that she practiced 30 minutes a day, every day, to prepare for her audition. “I practice a lot,” admitted the jazz fan, who cites Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis as two of her biggest influences. One thing Gonzalez discovered during the process: “I learned not to be as nervous and that I’ll do better. If you practice enough, you’ll be more confident.” Beatrice “Bea” Barnes, 14, also of Ventura, said one reason she loves the French horn is because of its “super rich tone.” She admitted, however, that as a competitive gymnast, she also likes a challenge, and the French horn is known to be “one of the more challenging instruments.” She devoted 45-60 minutes most days of the week to audition prep. “I focused on the specific things I had to play, and on my basics. The hard solos won’t be easy if you don’t practice the basics.” She also praised Cabrillo music teacher Garbriel Garnett, tutor Gregg Hutchinson (also a teacher at Anacapa Middle School) and Boccali for their guidance and support. “They

0218_VCReporter_MUSIC.indd 15

taught me everything I know.” “I was driven to the oboe [because] it has a really unique sound,” said Kiran Maserang, 13, of Ventura. “The oboe has more potential sounds and ways it can be interpreted.” The piece he had to play for his audition — Haydn’s “Menuetto and Presto” — “has many parts where you don’t get to breathe a lot.” To prepare, he practiced 45 minutes every day and “played a lot of long tones” — essentially holding notes for as long as possible. He noted that the pandemic has allowed him to focus more on his music, which gave him an edge this year. “Last year I tried out and I wasn’t experienced, but also I didn’t put in the time,” he said. With fewer distractions due to the COVID-19 closures, “I put in more time this year and that made the difference.”

CASMEC goes online

Traditionally, CASMEC is a four-day conference that takes place in Fresno. Students are in “nonstop rehearsals Thursday through Saturday, with a performance on Sunday,” Boccali said. This year, however, the conference is just two days and will be conducted virtually. According to Boccali, students will get the music ready on their own, and will be recorded while performing their parts separately. The online concert, with all the players, will be put together in post-production. Cabrillo students have mixed feelings about this.

“I’m mainly concerned about the audio quality,” said Maserang. “Playing solos . . . may not sound musical and melodic.” Nevertheless, he’s looking forward to the experience and “hearing how it sounds altogether.” Barnes is looking forward to meeting the other honor band members, but said that, “There’s this feeling you get when you’re playing with all these people in a big band . . . you don’t have that feeling online.” What hasn’t changed are the qualities students participating in the all-state experience develop. “Perseverance, self motivation, hard work, independence, a positive attitude,” Boccali named off. “Attention to detail — a tough thing for this age. Working together for a common goal.” Cabrillo middle schoolers have been among those selected for the all-state band every year since 2007, a fact that Boccali said attests to both the school’s music program and its students. “I hope all incoming students take advantage of what we have to offer in the music department at Cabrillo,” he said. “And I think our community should know how outstanding our kids really are. They’re spectacular kids doing spectacular things.” The California All-State Music Education Conference takes place online Feb. 19-20. chowder is delicious — and the perfect meal for chilly February. Lucky for Ventura County residents, it’s easy to come by a quality bowl. Ventura Harbor Village boasts more than 10 varieties of clam chowder to warm the soul. Andria’s, Brophy Bros, Boatyard Pub, 805 Bar and Grilled Cheese and La Petit Cafe all ladle up some worthy options. Over at Channel Islands Harbor, The Lookout Bar and Grill is as famous for its chowder as its fantastic location overlooking the marina. Fresh fish is a specialty at Fisherman’s Catch, so it’s no surprise that this seafood market and grill also makes a mean chowder. Sea Fresh has locations in both Oxnard and Ojai; find Lure Fish House in Camarillo, Ventura and Westlake Village. Between the two of them, excellent chowder (and all kinds of seafood) is readily available from east to west county. At Beach House Fish on Ventura Pier, you can enjoy your soup with a spectacular ocean view. Whether you’re in the mood for clam chowder or just a good cafe offering a special deal, Conejo Valley Restaurant Week and National Clam Chowder Day make this a great time to get out there and explore. Of course, we don’t need a special promotion or holiday to find good food in these parts — a fact well worth celebrating anytime.

ADVICE GODDESS

Job Corpse

My girlfriend of a year is beautiful, intelligent, sweet, and loving and the first woman I could see having a future with. Last week, I was told I’m being laid off from my job at a large media conglomerate. I haven’t told anyone, but I’m feeling increasingly guilty for keeping it a secret from my girlfriend. The thing is I’m afraid she’ll think less of me, even if she pretends not to. To be honest, I’d rather break up with her than tell her. — Distraught Ideally, when you propose a datenight activity, it isn’t a choice between: “We could go to the grocery store and

by amy alkon

look at all the food we can’t afford to buy” or “to the bank with a sawed-off shotgun and a wheelbarrow.” However, your heartbreaking “I’d rather break up with her than tell her” probably stems from shortsightedness about female mating psychology. Because men and women co-evolved, men are acutely aware that women seek “providers” as partners. But, in ancestral times, when our current mating psychology was shaped, there was no such thing as wealth: assets that could be stashed (or places to stash them). No money, no banks, no corpse-sized freezer to cram 126 bison burgers into. Accordingly, evolutionary psychologist David Buss explains that women gauge a man’s mate value by “looking beyond his current position” and evaluating his potential: his ability to acquire status and resources in the future. (Today, Top Ramen. Tomorrow, top surgeon.) Assuming you didn’t get your job because your boss threw darts at LinkedIn and hit you in the neck, you’ve probably got the smarts, talent, and ambition to get a new gig — or start a business of your own. And chances are there’s more to your relationship than two nice people

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY

ARIES

(March 21-April 19):

Atheists like to confront religious people with accusations like this: “If God is so good, why does he allow suffering in the world?” Their simplistic, childish idea of God as some sort of Moral Policeman is ignorant of the lush range of ruminations about the Divine as offered down through the ages by poets, novelists, philosophers, and theologians. For example, poet Stéphane Mallarmé wrote, “Spirit cares for nothing except universal musicality.” He suggested that the Supreme Intelligence is an artist making music and telling stories. And as you know, music and stories include all human adventures, not just the happy stuff. I bring these thoughts to your attention, Aries, because the coming weeks will be a favorable time to honor and celebrate the marvelously rich stories of your own life—and to feel gratitude for the full range of experience with which they have blessed you. PS: Now is also a favorable phase to rethink and reconfigure your answers to the Big Questions.

TAURUS

(April 20-May 20):

Blogger Rachel C. Lewis confides, “I love being horribly straightforward. I love sending reckless text messages and telling people I love them and telling people they are absolutely magical humans and I cannot believe they really exist. I love saying, ‘Kiss me harder,’ and ‘You’re a good person,’ and, ‘You brighten my day.’” What would your unique version of Lewis’s forthrightness be like, Taurus? What brazen praise would you offer? What declarations of affection and care would you unleash? What naked confessions might you reveal? The coming days will be a favorable time to explore these possibilities.

GEMINI

(May 21-June 20):

(June 21-July 22):

You’re on the verge of breakthroughs. You’re ready to explore frontiers, at least in your imagination. You’re brave enough to go further and try harder than you’ve been able to before. With that in mind, here’s a highly apropos idea from Cancerian novelist Tom Robbins. He writes, “If you take any activity, any art, any discipline, any skill, take it and push it as far as it will go, push it beyond where it has ever been before, push it to the wildest edge of edges, then you force it into the realm of magic.” (I might use the word “coax” or “nudge” instead of “force” in Robbins’ statement.)

I’m a woman in my 20s with a friend who often copies my style. It feels like she’s trying to one-up me, but I’ve tried to ignore it. Well, for years, I’ve rimmed my lower eye with thick black kohl. She commented on it several weeks ago and then started doing it herself. At lunch yesterday, she said (about my eyeliner): “You started doing that? I’ve done it forever.” This is the third time she’s pretended my style she copied was hers first, but I feel petty being upset about it. — Unflattered

Apparently, there could be two snowflakes that are alike — from very tiny snow crystals — but they probably wouldn’t show up at the same bar wearing the same dress and eyeliner. “Monkey see, monkey do” isn’t limited to monkeys or stylejacking female friends. Even fruit flies are copycats, spotting an alpha ladyfly getting it on with a particular dudefly and, afterward, engaging in “mate-choice copying”: the insect sex version of “I’ll have what she’s having!” Like fruit flies, we evolved to copy high-status peeps (friends and celebrities) to advance our evolutionary interests: survival, social survival, and our ability to mate and pass on our genes. Accordingly, evolutionary psychologist Abraham Buunk finds that envy is wrongly maligned as a toxic emotion. Sure, some envious people act in destructive ways (“malicious envy”), but simply noticing others outpacing us and feeling bad about it serves as an internal alarm system: “Hey, Slackerella...better catch up!” We’re told “imitation” is some fabulous form of flattery, so it can feel petty to accuse somebody of stealing your look. However, evolu-

tionary psychologist Vladas Griskevicius explains that we try to make ourselves attractive to potential partners by seeming unique and special, standing out from the crowd. So, this woman’s ultimately cheating in competing for mates, which is probably why she’s “gaslighting” you. Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which somebody tries to destabilize your grasp on the facts by denying what you know is true, to the point where you might start questioning it yourself. In other words, what’s creepy here isn’t so much the crime as the cover-up. Probably the only way to stop this is dialing back her presence in your life. You can call the cops if somebody stabs you or steals your TV, but there are no actual fashion police to be dispatched, a la, “911, what is your emergency?” You: “Help! She plagiarized my eyeliner!” (c)2021, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved. Got a problem? Write Amy Alkon, 171 Pier Ave, #280, Santa Monica, CA 90405, or e-mail AdviceAmy@aol.com. @amyalkon on Twitter. It’s a good time to become more of who you are by engaging with more of what you are not. Get in the mood for this heroic exercise by studying the following rant by Gemini poet Adam Zagajewski (who writes in Polish), translated by Gemini poet Clare Cavanaugh: “Read for yourselves, read for the sake of your inspiration, for the sweet turmoil in your lovely head. But also read against yourselves, read for questioning and impotence, for despair and erudition, read the dry, sardonic remarks of cynical philosophers. Read those whose darkness or malice or madness or greatness you can’t yet understand, because only in this way will you grow, outlive yourself, and become what you are.”

hooking up on the regular. Cobble together the courage to be vulnerable. Tell your girlfriend what you’re going through, including how you feel: perhaps scared, unsure of your value, and maybe like you’ve let her down. Sure, she might drop you like a hot rock — but she might instead show you she loves you and believes in you, even when you’re having a tough time believing in yourself. There’s one way to find out which it is, and it isn’t by spending two months keeping mum about the layoff while having pretend work calls on Zoom with your friend’s dog.

(July 23-Aug. 22):

In her story “Homelanding,” Margaret Atwood writes, “Take me to your trees. Take me to your breakfasts, your sunsets, your bad dreams, your shoes. Take me to your fingers.” I’d love you to express requests like that. It’s a favorable time for you to delve deeper into the mysteries of people you care about. You will generate

healing and blessings by cultivating reverent curiosity and smart empathy and crafty intimacy. Find out more about your best allies!

VIRGO

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22):

You’re about to reach the end of your phase of correction and adjustment. To mark this momentous transition, and to honor your ever-increasing ability to negotiate with your demons, I offer you the following inspirational proclamation by poet Jeannette Napolitano: “I don’t want to look back in five years’ time and think, ‘We could have been magnificent, but I was afraid.’ In five years, I want to tell of how fear tried to cheat me out of the best thing in life, and I didn’t let it.”

LIBRA

(Sept. 23-Oct. 22):

It’s not a good time for you to be obsessed with vague abstractions, fear-based fantasies, and imaginary possibilities. But it is a favorable phase to rise up in behalf of intimate, practical changes. At least for now, I also want to advise you not to be angry and militant about big, complicated issues that you have little power to affect. On the other hand, I encourage you to get inspired and aggressive about injustices you can truly help fix and erroneous approaches you can correct and close-at-hand dilemmas for which you can summon constructive solutions.

SCORPIO

(Oct. 23-Nov. 21):

“The most beautiful things are those that madness prompts and reason writes,” declared author André Gide. As a writer myself, I will testify to the truth of that formulation. But what about those of you who aren’t poets and novelists and essayists? Here’s how I would alter Gide’s statement to fit you: “The most beautiful things are those that rapture prompts and reason refines.” Or

maybe this: “The most beautiful things are those that experimentation finds and reason uses.” Or how about this one: “The most beautiful things are those that wildness generates and reason enhances.” Any and all of those dynamics will be treasures for you in the coming weeks.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

The poet Nayyirah Waheed has some advice I want you to hear. She writes, “Be easy. Take your time. You are coming home to yourself.” I will add that from my astrological perspective, the coming weeks will indeed be a time for you to relax more deeply into yourself — to welcome yourself fully into your unique destiny; to forgive yourself for what you imagine are your flaws; to not wish you were someone else pursuing a different path; to be at peace and in harmony with the exact life you have.

CAPRICORN

(Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

“The chief object of education is not to learn things but to unlearn things,” wrote author G. K. Chesterton. He was exaggerating for dramatic effect when he said that, as he often did. The more nuanced truth is that one of the central aims of education is to learn things, and another very worthy aim is to unlearn things. I believe you are currently in a phase when you should put an emphasis on unlearning things that are irrelevant and meaningless and obstructive. This will be excellent preparation for your next phase, which will be learning a lot of useful and vitalizing new things.

AQUARIUS

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943) ultimately became one of the 20th century’s most renowned composers. But his career had a rough start. Symphony No. 1, his first major

work, was panned by critics, sending him into a four-year depression. Eventually he recovered. His next major composition, Piano Concerto No. 2, was well-received. I don’t anticipate that your rookie offerings or new work will get the kind of terrible reviews that Rachmaninoff’s did. But at least initially, there may be no great reviews, and possibly even indifference. Keep the faith, my dear. Don’t falter in carrying out your vision of the future. The rewards will come in due time.

PISCES

(Feb. 19-March 20):

Ancient Greek playwright Euripides was popular and influential—and remains so to this day, 2,400 years later. But there’s a curiously boring aspect in five of his plays, Andromache, Alcestis, Helen, Medea, and The Bacchae. They all have the same exact ending: six lines, spoken by a chorus, that basically say the gods are unpredictable. Was Euripides lazy? Trying too hard to drive home the point? Or were the endings added later by an editor? Scholars disagree. The main reason I’m bringing this to your attention is to encourage you to avoid similar behavior. I think it’s very important that the stories you’re living right now have different endings than all the stories of your past. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
