he Ventura County District Attorney and other DA offices across the state are involved in ongoing unemployment insurance (UI) fraud cases of the type that California State Auditor Elaine Howle warned about in 2019. These fraud cases became more prevalent when processes were streamlined to expedite UI claims during the onset and worsening of the pandemic. Howle called out the Employment Development Department’s (EDD) practice of including complete social security numbers on correspondence that is mailed to millions of Californians as a major contributor to the fraud vulnerability of the EDD system. As of November 2020, the EDD still had not rectified the issue. In a Nov. 19 letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislators, Howle stated that “EDD has continued to place Californians at risk of identity theft” by failing to remove complete social security numbers from all documents mailed. She had suggested using a unique identifying number instead of social security numbers on correspondence. (1) “As millions more Californians filed unemployment benefit claims [during the pandemic], the number of pieces of mail that EDD sent with SSNs printed on them increased dramatically,” wrote Howle in the Nov. letter. “EDD must take swift action to end its potentially harmful practice and better safeguard the identities of the residents it serves.” Howle’s office is conducting an ongoing audit of the EDD’s backlog of unemploy-

ment claims, call center performance and the adequacy of its information technology infrastructure.

UI fraud in Ventura County

“We are seeing significant amounts of EDD fraud and are aggressively investigating these offenses,” said Gregory Totten, Ventura County District Attorney (VCDA). “Fraudulent claims have been filed under the name of one of our death row inmates.” Howard Wise, senior deputy district attorney, explained that UI fraud “takes three forms.” First, when people, “often inmates, apply for UI when they are not entitled to it.” He explained they “typically lie about their address (often jail) or their work history.” Ventura County has “a number of these cases under investigation involving county residents.” He could not comment further on those active investigations. He also referred to Grigor Gasparyan and Karapet Gasparyan, arrested August 2020 in Thousand Oaks on fraud charges. Allegations in the pending case include the accused being in possession of 200 fraudulent EDD debit cards used to cash out over $160,000 at local bank ATMs. The Gasparyans were located following a 911 call from a member of the public who witnessed them acting suspiciously at the Bank of America ATM on North Moorpark Road inThousand Oaks. Police located the suspects and in a traffic stop searched their vehicle and found two grocery bags full of EDD and Visa debit cards in

other people’s names. “The EDD cards were obtained by members of the conspiracy applying for EDD benefits in the names of real people around the country but providing a false California mailing address,” said Wise. “Strictly speaking, however, neither the identity theft victims nor the defendants are from Ventura County. Only the victim banks were located in Ventura County. The case is pending in Ventura Superior Court.” Wise pointed to a third instance in which Mary Urias, a resident of Oxnard, was fired in February 2020 after being convicted of embezzling funds from her employer, 5-Star Theatricals. Urias then filed a claim with EDD reporting she lost her job due to the pandemic. She was then also convicted of UI insurance fraud, and has been sentenced to state prison. Newsom formed an EDD “strike team” to address the issues in the agency highlighted by Howle, as well as other technology and processing issues. If you believe you have been a victim of identity theft related to fraudulent unemployment insurance claims, report the fraud to local law enforcement, state unemployment insurance agencies, the IRS, credit bureaus and your employer’s human resources department. 1. n Tuesday, Dec. 29, Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of California’s Health and Human Services Agency, announced that the stay-at-home order for the Southern California region, including Ventura County, is being extended. The decision was made in light of four factors: ICU capacity in the region, current seven-day average case rate and transmission rate, and current ICU admission rate. The recent order was set to expire on Monday, Dec. 28. The new order is active as long as those factors indicate an ICU capacity under 15 percent. Ghaly said that is assessed and will be publicly reported daily. On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom emphasized that the decision to extend any orders is based “on data,” noting that the state is in a “new phase, where we brace . . . prepare ourselves for what is inevitable based on the travel” that occurred over the holidays. More travel and transmission is expected to create a “surge on top of a surge.” Newsom said that the 10,000 to 15,000 new daily cases in the state are putting a tremendous strain on the healthcare system. To those who don’t think the pandemic directly affects them, he added, “God forbid” they should have acute care needs from a stroke or heart attack. “The impact of this virus is being felt on the entire healthcare system.” The extension means that businesses such as beauty salons, gyms, personal care services and onsite dining at restaurants must remain closed.

County numbers

According to state data, as of Dec. 27, Ventura County has a 14-day average for daily new

cases of 719.5, with 79 people being treated in county ICUs for COVID-19-related symptoms, leaving just 37 ICU beds available countywide. There are 358 people in area hospitals being treated for COVID-19-related symptoms. On Monday, Dec. 28, Ventura County reported 3,178 new cases (including three days over the weekend) and 11 additional deaths from COVID-19. Of those 11, two women had no other comorbidities that contributed to their deaths.

County vaccine distribution

Ventura County has released detailed information about the groups that will receive the coronavirus vaccines first. Currently Phase 1a, set to last through late February, includes hospital staff, medical first responders, long-term care staff and residents and all other healthcare providers. Then in Phase 1b, beginning in early February to late March, critical infrastructure workers, law enforcement and firefighters, K-12 teachers and school staff and members of the public over 75 years old can receive the vaccine. After those two phases are complete, Phase 1c will include “older adults” not included in Phase 1b, all other critical infrastructure workers not already vaccinated and people with “high risk conditions.” After those phases are completed, all people over 16 years of age, who are not already in one of the groups from earlier phases, will have access to the vaccine. How and where to recycle your Christmas tree by David Goldstein ‘Twas the week after Christmas and all through the county treecycling was popular; some got back a mulch bounty. The trees were placed in curbside carts with great care, in hopes the recycling truck soon would be there.

ven though Christmas tree recycling is an annual ritual, differing rules, dates and deadlines in various parts of Ventura County can make collection and drop-off confusing. The advertisements, fliers and online outreach from each city are seen by residents of other areas, but each resident needs to know their own city’s rules. Other than grinding your tree and using the mulch or composting it on site, the best “treecycling” method for the environment, requiring the least amount of truck idling time and transportation, is for you to cut your tree into segments and fit the pieces into your regular curbside yard waste recycling cart. As long as your tree is free of decorations, stands or other items, it will be mulched with your other yard clippings. Trees over six feet in height should be cut in half. Fireproofed trees should be placed in garbage carts rather than yard waste carts, and you must remove decorations and stands, but trees flocked with fake snow are acceptable. If you will not cut your tree to fit into your cart, check your city or refuse hauler’s website or call the phone number on your trash bill to find out whether and when homes in your area are allowed to set out whole trees by the curb. Whole tree collection is currently scheduled for these areas: • Harrison & Sons and Waste Management GI Industries collection of whole trees without a charge in unincorporated areas started Dec. 26 and continues through Jan. 8. These same haulers also

provide free whole tree collection on regular days of collection in the cities of Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and Moorpark through Jan. 8. • Similarly, Athens Services provides whole tree curbside collection in Santa Paula through Jan. 10. • Port Hueneme offers whole tree curbside collection Jan. 4-11, and Oxnard offers collection through Jan. 30. If you set out a tree after a deadline or in an area without free collection, you will be charged for special collection unless you make separate arrangements. In most areas, you can make these arrangements by calling your refuse collector and requesting your annually allocated “free bulky item collection.” If you live in a multi-family building without yard waste service, ask your apartment manager or other representative of the owner to contract separately with your hauler for special service. For businesses, homes without curbside yard waste service and apartments without yard waste collection bins, Christmas tree recycling drop-off sites have been available during operating hours since Dec. 26 and will be free through Jan. 10 at the following locations: • Agromin Organics, 6859 Arnold Road, Oxnard. • Agromin’s corporate office, 201 Kinetic Drive, Oxnard. • Peach Hill Soils’ retail site at Performance Nursery, at 6001 E. Los Angeles Ave., Somis. • Peach Hill Soils compost site, 10765 W. Los Angeles Ave., Moorpark.

Agromin and Peach Hill offer free bags of mulch or compost to residents dropping off trees at their locations. Here are some other options: • Waste Management’s Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center, 2801 Madera Road, allows free tree drop-off, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Jan. 16. • Moorpark provides its residents with a free drop-off location on Marquette Street at Park Crest Lane through Jan. 10. • Santa Paula’s downtown train station drop-off is open through Jan. 12. • Oxnard residents may drop off trees free at the Del Norte Regional Recycling and Transfer Station Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Jan. 30 (use the roll-off container next to the buyback center off Del Norte Boulevard). In most areas, residents can also put out extra trash after Christmas. For example, residents of unincorporated areas get free collection of up to two extra 50-gallon bags on their day of collection through Jan. 8. Moorpark residents can set out up to three extra bags of trash or recycling at no extra charge through Jan. 10. Food and toy drive breaks record A food and toy drive hosted by two entities that have recently been at odds demonstrated the spirit of the season by coming together to benefit their community. The Ventura County Harbor Department (VCHD) and the Harbor and Beach Community Alliance partnered earlier this month to collect toys, food and funds for local families in need. The two entities have been going head to head at recent Oxnard City Council and Ventura County Board of Supervisor meetings regarding development plans for Fisherman’s Wharf. The alliance has been critical of the process and how the harbor department has been working with the developer. But all of that was set aside to come together for a good cause. “Everyone involved in the planning underestimated how well we would do. The community and volunteers really stepped up to help deliver what we hope will be joy and great memories for families

in need this holiday season,” said Mark Sandoval, VCHD director. “This event was amazing.” The Holiday Food and Toy Drive collected 2,200 toys and 5,000 pounds of food at Fisherman’s Wharf in the Channel Islands Harbor over the Dec. 12 weekend. Donations broke previous records and $14,000 in monetary donations provided 41,000 meals for those in need over the holiday season. “Thank you so much to the Channel Islands Harbor and the community for this amazing support for Food Share,” said Jennifer Caldwell, chief development officer with Food Share. “This could be the biggest community food drive I’ve ever seen in Food Share history.” Dozens of community volunteers, harbor department staff and fire department vol-

unteers helped during the drive. “We live in a great and generous community. There were so many great heartfelt stories from people and even children saying why they came to give,” said Rene Aiu, HBCA member.

or two and a half months, life in Ventura County was the same old same old. We had science, politics and the environment on our minds. Kids designed an experiment bound for space, a NASA engineer talked about the missions to Mars, everyone was looking to the Super Tuesday March 3 primary and the city of Ventura embroiled thousands of residents in the Ojai Valley in a water rights adjudication that has yet to be concluded. By March 19, we were living in a vastly different world — and our coverage reflects the mounting concern and massive changes to everyday living brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. While we managed to find other things to talk about from time to time, COVID-19 was the driving force behind nearly everything that happened for most of the year. Here we take a look at the stories that stood out in 2020.

JANUARY

Children are indeed the future, and our Jan. 1 edition featured the students of Ventura Missionary School, who partnered with NASA and Quest Institute to design an experiment testing heat transfer in outer space. The experiment was later rebuilt for eventual travel to the International Space Station. Stories we also covered in January included a look at the Petrochem site in the Ventura River Watershed, the water rights adjudication initiated by the city of Ventura with regards to some 10,000 property owners in the Ojai Valley and the work of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office’s Human Trafficking Task Force. FEBRUARY

February saw the beginning of our election coverage, as we informed readers about the various races and candidates on the ballot for the March 2020 primary, including the U.S. House of Representatives, State Senate and Assembly, Ventura County Supervisors and Superior Court. Our Feb. 12 issue covered Valentine’s Day, and Photo contest first place winning entry by we celebrated by showing our love of Michelle Stevens. photography, awarding prizes to the top three winners and displaying several more in a series of wonderful “honorable mentions.” We hit the ground running at the end of the month, with a feature on Ventura County’s Legacy Runners — those who have completed every single L.A. Marathon since the first one, which took place in 1986.

MARCH

In honor of Women’s History Month, we planned on featuring as many stories about women as possible. We started off strong, sharing the life and times of centenarian Tomie Katsuda of Oxnard and lifelong activist Lupe Anguiano. By the time the March 19 issue hit newsstands, however, life in Ventura County had changed dramatically. The coronavirus and the COVID19 disease caused by it — already declared a pandemic, and spreading rapidly across Asia and Europe — led to school and business closures, a rush on toilet paper and a nearly collective silence as all enterprise except the most essential came to a standstill, thanks to a statewide stayat-home order issued by California Gov. Gavin Newsom on a March 19. Our editorial team went into overdrive to keep up with the constant influx of pandemic-related updates and news coming in. We also reported on Dr. Sabine Hazan and her team at Progenabiome, who were working on a series of clinical trials aimed at developing a treatment protocol for COVID-19.

MAY

After taking a look at the bar scene in April, in May we checked in with local restaurants to see what strategies — mainly takeout specials and teaming up with World Central Kitchen — they used to keep going. We extolled on the virtues and pleasures of electronic bicycles, discussed one university dance teacher’s approach to online learning and presented our annual summer movie preview . . . with all the new releases coming to the small screen.

APRIL

Unsurprisingly, our coverage in April was dominated by COVID-19 — and efforts made across the county to try to inform, protect, engage, feed and inspire people. We wrote about the citizens who took to their sewing machines, workshops and even 3D printers to make up for the shortage in masks and other personal protective equipment. Museums and galleries threw pretty pictures, video tours, interviews and more online, and local bars tried to stay afloat with to-go cocktails. We did manage to share the drama unfolding at a bald eagle nest at Lake Casitas — a rare and welcome departure from everything pandemic.

JUNE

In a salute to Ventura County’s graduating class, 2020 high school seniors shared their thoughts on what completing their education amidst a shutdown was like. Later we covered the Black Lives Matter protests and examined the legacy of Junipero Serra in light of demands for the removal of his statue from in front of Ventura City Hall. We ended the month on a story about the power of community created by a meditation group.

Burro Flats in the Santa Susana Mountains is associated with numerous local Indigenous tribes. It also overlies the former site of the heavily contaminated Santa Susana Field Lab. We did a deep dive into the site, its nomination to the National Registry of Historic Places and the role of environmental cleanup in the process. Members of the Diversity Collective Ventura County discussed the unique challenges facing LGBTQ+ individuals during the pandemic, while local volunteers talked about their work with unhoused residents of the Santa Clara River bottom. AUGUST

We revisited our Women’s Issue coverage that got curtailed in March with inspiring interviews and profiles of several women in Ventura County — individuals who crossed the spectra in terms of age, politics, education, career and interests. As the new school year started, we looked at how the various districts in Zuli Jimenez, Manager, Ventura Bike HUB; Coordinator, the county were handling Community Roots Garden — featured in our Women’s distance learning. Our other Issue. Photo by Luis Chavez stories in August included the tale of one family that lived through a household-wide coronavirus infection, and the challenges of serving the homeless during the pandemic.

SEPTEMBER

Culture and art took center stage this month, as we did a walking tour of Foster Park with Matthew Vestuto, a member of the Barbareño/Ventureño Band of Mission Indians, and strolled around the Ventura Botanical Gardens to see the stunning works of outdoor sculpture exhibit Arte Forastero. Dr. Sabine Hazan spoke with us again about her continuing research into the coronavirus, and Monica White of Food Share discussed her organization’s efforts to address the growing food insecurity in Ventura County. We also kicked off our election coverage, with a look at the mayoral and city council candidates in Simi Valley, and the Ventura County Supervisor race in District 5.

OCTOBER

Most of our October coverage was devoted to the 2020 election. We interviewed Ventura City Council candidates in Districts 2, 3 and The 2020 election dominated our coverage in October. 7; considered the differences between Tim Flynn and Carmen Ramirez, vying for the District 5 seat on the Ventura County Board of Supervisors; and examined the impacts of Measure O and the commercial cultivation of cannabis on the county.

The role of agriculture in combating climate change was a hot topic in November, and the story of missing pet Layla demonstrated the important work of local nonprofit Dog Days Search and Rescue. Students participating in the PhotoVoice visual literacy program had the opportunity to inspire Layla back home in Santa Rosa Valley after being missing change in their community for two days and traveling as far away as 10 miles from through photography. When it was announced in October that an Amazon fulfillment center was coming to Oxnard, citizens and officials alike began contemplating what that would — and would not — mean for the community. We spoke with several interested parties and attended an online panel discussion to inform readers of the many perspectives centering on the e-commerce giant. We also encouraged everyone to shop local with a handy gift guide to products made by or readily available from Ventura County businesses. The Canyon in Agoura Hills took over space at the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center to host Carpool Jams (featuring local tribute bands like Queen Nation, Mirage and Erotic City) in the parking lot. The TO Arts Roadshow, presented in part by the Bank of America Performing Arts Center, featured music, theater and more at The Lakes at Thousand Oaks, and Hillcrest Center for the Arts managed some drive-in events at nearby Conejo Creek Park South.

Local artists in the spotlight

With fewer live concerts to dominate our music coverage, we found more opportunity to profile local musicians. Artists we featured in 2020 include Sik Sik Sicks, Rain Perry, Tony Ybarra, Shylah Ray Sunshine, Andy Wray, Burleigh Drummond and Zorba Cruz.

That’s a wrap for 2020. Going out with more of a whimper than a bang: Now that both Concerts in Your Car and Carpool Jams are currently on hiatus, it’s going to be a quiet winter. e’re used to eating well in Ventura County. Even after everything came to a screeching halt in March, there were plenty of options for those times when you just couldn’t tolerate cooking. You just had to bring it home with you, for the most part. We take a look at some of our favorite meals over the last few months.

Tipples To Go

Spare some sympathy for the restaurants that opened in 2020 — either right before COVID-19 hit, or in the midst of the shutdown. A few of these brave souls managed to make a decent go of it. Banh Mi Paris Sandwiches in Ventura gives soup and sandwiches a Vietnamese twist, with delicious banh mi and equally good pho. In Oxnard, Southern food fans can look to Cajun Country Cafe for New Orleans-inspired specialties like Po’Boy sandwiches (the shrimp is excellent — and filling), rich barbecue, crispy hush puppies and collard greens. Both do plenty of business with carryout and GrubHub can deliver.

One of the best things to come out of the stay-at-home order was permission from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for bars and restaurants to offer yummy cocktails for carryout. VenTiki was one of the first to set customers up with liquid stress relief, via its QuaranTiki Trifecta, Zombia Apocalypse, and the special B.I.R.D. Ration Kit, which featured different drinks every week. Azu in Ojai has always been known for its craft cocktails made with house-infused booze and mixers and local ingredients — and the tasty goodness of Orchard Margaritas, Quarantinis and the like were easy to enjoy at home. Local breweries Institution Ale, Leashless Brewing and Poseidon Brewing gave us something to write home about (and take home with us): fruit-forward brews that were perfect for summertime sipping.

Delivering the Goods

From March until May, takeout and delivery was the name of the game for local eateries. Special to-go menus, like Social Tap’s Family Meal Deals (which included an entree plus sides), made it easy to feed four people on the cheap — and bringing it curbside meant low-contact pickup, too. Kitanoya, in Oxnard’s Seabridge neighborhood, is available through GrubHub, meaning you can get rockin’ ramen delivered right to your door. The sushi and tempura are good, too, but the soup is superior and perfect for this time of year. Boar’s Breath Grill has more than just great burgers and sandwiches. Lasagna, gyros, homemade potato chips . . . lots to love at this Port Hueneme gastropub, which has become a family favorite. It delivers to nearby Naval Base Ventura County; the rest of us can let GrubHub do the driving. Lucky Thai in Pierpont operates its own delivery service (for a fee) and has lots of interesting options outside of the typical Thai standards — be sure to check out the ribeye green curry and the satay.

The Great Outdoors

Restaurant owners finally got a break — for a while, at least — in May, when outdoor dining onsite was allowed after months of takeout only. Notable eats on the patio included a very tasty breakfast from the Galloping Hen in Midtown Ventura — a decades-old restaurant that was always a rather quiet spot. It seemed to gain new life post-pandemic, when it took over the adjacent sidewalk with charming tables separated from each other with plastic sheeting; the place was suddenly packed every weekend. Oxnard’s Pacific Cafe, in an industrial park off Rose Avenue, used up some of its parking lot to serve outdoor customers, who could order fantastic fish tacos, wonderful sandwiches, and melt-in-your-mouth crepes off the same menu. Breakfast and Bloody Marys with a view of Ventura Harbor were a highlight at The Greek, while the Jolly Oyster’s fresh shellfish on the beach made for a unique, and delicious, dining experience.

With the COVID surge re-closing all on-site dining — outdoors or otherwise — the Ventura County restaurant scene is once again in dire straits. It would be a shame for so many of our favorite eateries to close before we can get back to our usual order of business. There’s lots of delicious eats available for takeout, and if you can spare the dimes, a to-go order will fill your belly and fill the coffers of local restaurants — making for a brighter 2021 all around. My boyfriend does everything halfway, save for playing video games and smoking weed. He does sloppy work at his job, just the minimum to get by, and is always late turning things in. He’s gotten away with this so far, maybe because he’s charismatic and fun. In our relationship, he’ll promise me one thing and do another, and he does sneaky-lazy things like using up my shampoo but leaving the empty bottle in the shower. He’s highly intelligent and could be so much better than this. Is there a way to get him to change? — Disappointed Girlfriend Sadly, few companies have the kind of position he’d be ideal for: Vice President of Watching Porn During Business Hours. Novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote that “action is character.” The way somebody repeatedly behaves reflects the sort of person they are: for example, highly trustworthy or “better lock up the silverware — including the stainless steel!” Psychologists boil down a person’s typical way of behaving — along with the recurring thoughts and feelings that drive it — as personality traits (for instance, extraversion). Personality traits have a hefty genetic component — maybe even 50 percent — and tend to be pretty consistent over time and in different situations. (A barfighter is a barfighter is a barfighter.) Like classic Jolly Ranchers, personality traits come in five core “flavors,” which psychologists remember with the acronym OCEAN: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (aka emotional stability). Each trait is actually a spectrum ranging from low to high (from very little of a trait to lots and lots of it). Ethically elastic, lazy sociopotato behavior like your boyfriend’s reflects low conscientiousness. A person high in conscientiousness is disciplined, dependable and organized, with strong self-control, while someone low in conscientiousness is unreliable, undisciplined, and slothful, with poor impulse control and little concern for how their multislacking affects others. They can be wonderfully spontaneous and a lot of fun — that is, until they spontaneously pawn your dog to stake themselves into high-roller poker. Being conscientious is one of the most reliable predictors of success — in any job from CEO to dog groomer to Etsy birdhouse magnate. It’s natural to assume low conscientiousness is bad and high is good. But high

conscientiousness has a number of downsides, such as buttcheek-clenching inflexibility, crippling perfectionism, and being about as spurof-the-moment fun as a refrigerated corpse. Additionally, evolutionary anthropologist Daniel Nettle observes that the benefits of high conscientiousness are “exaggerated” in the “artificial ecologies” of modern workplaces. “Few of our ancestors survived and reproduced by being able to stay in the same place for eight hours a day, quietly getting on with a series of pre-planned or repetitive tasks” like entering sales data into spreadsheets. For an ancestral hunter-gatherer, life was “a series of urgent improvisations” to manage surprising situations that constantly popped up. “It would really not be a good response, observing a passing herd of wildebeest, to say, ‘Actually Wednesday is my honey-gathering day.’” Interestingly, research by psychologist Joanna Moutafi and her colleagues finds a relationship between high intelligence and low conscientiousness, suggesting that being brainy allows for slackadaisical behavior. People who are very smart learn that they can goof off and do work at the last minute because they’ve got the mental juice to squeak by. Can a brainy slothlete like your boyfriend change? Maybe. But the chances of this happening simply because you ask are probably slim. Change is more likely to come through getting hit hard by some catastrophic loss, like getting canned or dumped or driving while sloshed and mowing down the neighbors. However, you could tell your boyfriend you think he’s awesome in many ways, but you see him doing things halfway, and it makes every area of his life so much less than it could be. Paint a picture of how great things could be if he just put in a bit more effort. Assuming he doesn’t shut you down, suggest an experiment. For two weeks, he could pick a couple of things to do really well every day: one at home (maybe making the bed like they do at a nice hotel) and another at work. During the two weeks, pump him up when he follows through, and afterward, ask him how it made him feel: about himself, his job prospects, and making you feel loved. Going back to Fitzgerald’s “action is character,” if your boyfriend feels good enough to keep up and expand the changes, you might see that action also becomes character. We can choose who we are (probably more than most of us think) by repeatedly acting like the sort of person we want to be. Accordingly, some committed slackers do finally start climbing the corporate ladder; however, others prefer to keep napping underneath.
