ocal news tracks the stories of our communities and becomes an historical archive. Looking back, we often see trends, events, issues and personalities that form our combined history.

While feature stories usually take the cover, it is the smaller stories, the nitty-gritty news, that unfold every day all around us. As we prepare to enter 2022, we consider the stories over the past year, to help inform and prepare for what lies ahead.

JANUARY

The pandemic continued and news coverage included efforts to enforce the California Public Records Act to make sure Ventura County properly reported the local businesses who received COVID CARES Act funding. We shared stories of nurses and doctors on the front lines of the local pandemic fight and the story of Jeff Muth of Meiners Oaks who suffered a COVID-related stroke.

Aside from the pandemic, new Ventura County Supervisor Matt LaVere changed course when he found himself in hot water about his pick for Planning Commissioner, and Oxnard found itself on the wrong side of court decisions related to controversial figure Aaron Starr’s lawsuits regarding fees. A Piru teen made national news when she was arrested for assaulting a Black man that she thought had stolen her cell phone, and we began reporting on the efforts of Southern California Gas Company to expand a gas compressor site in West Ventura.

FEBRUARY

Three COVID variants were first found in local wastewater and Dr. Robert Levin, health officer with Ventura County Public Health, reminded the public to expect variants as the pandemic progressed. Vaccines were being made available to those most at risk. The city of Ventura notified rate payers that their water rates would be increasing, and federal officials ensured that the bald eagles nesting at Lake Casitas were protected from paparazzi.

MARCH

We covered an online talk hosted by Moorpark College with renowned intellectual and activist Dr. Cornel West. But it was COVID that dominated our pages, with vaccine distribution programs for farmworkers taking shape and proper mask wearing being emphasized. 805AgKids advocated to the Ventura County Fair Board to allow in-person shows for kids who have raised animals that would normally show at the fair, which had to be canceled again due to the pandemic.

APRIL

Vaccine access expanded to people aged 50 years old and older on April 1 and to all over age 15 by April 15.

Naval Base Ventura County conducted training, taking place nationally among the military, as part of a zero tolerance policy designed to prevent extremist, white-supremacist behavior.

805AgKids continued to press for in-person events for youth livestock events at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

MAY

Responding to public outcry, the city of Ventura asked for answers about the West Ventura Southern California Gas Company compressor site and planned expansion.

Santa Paula began a volunteer-based city beautification program that brought residents together to paint, clean and spruce up public spaces.Vaccination efforts also ramped up across the county.

Simi Valley City Hall received praise for lighting up its facade with rainbow lights for Pride Month, after the city council declined to fly a Pride flag. A homeowner’s association in Ventura overstepped by charging exorbitant fees for one resident’s solar panels.

The unpopular state-imposed “tier” system of governing pandemic closures was lifted and mask wearing was made optional for most.

JULY

There was more public action opposing the West Ventura Southern California Gas compressor site expansion plan, with Ventura County Supervisor Carmen Ramirez attending a march.

Those seeking a recall of Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks (Dist. 2) emphasized that they were not connected to the unwelcome, attention-grabbing package she’d been mailed the month before.

AUGUST

The state tells Southern California Gas to halt the West Ventura gas compressor site project while impact studies were completed and alternative plans explored. Westside residents claim a victory.

Ventura County Public Health adopted an indoor masking mandate in an effort to thwart the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Officer James Fryhoff announced his bid for Ventura County Sheriff and began a campaign to unseat Sheriff Bill Ayub.

We also covered the efforts of volunteer Rick Nack, who each week visits the homeless encampment area at the Santa Clara River with food and other needed items, and discussed the

issue of encampment cleanups that displace the people who make their homes there.

SEPTEMBER

Our periodic Legislation Check series looked at the upcoming Special Election in Oxnard, pending local, state and federal legislation, and Ventura County voters aligned with the majority of voters in the state to reject the recall of Gov. Gavin Newsom. The effort to recall Supervisor Linda Parks also failed for want of enough signatures. The death of Kelsey Dillon highlighted the dangers to unhoused women.

OCTOBER

We continued our ongoing coverage of the effort to halt Southern California Gas Company from expanding their gas compressor site, and reported on the die-in staged by West Ventura residents at the Museum of Ventura County, where SoCalGas was attempting to hold a community meeting. Two local women were featured in our ongoing VC Voices series: We talked with Ginger Gherardi of Santa Paula about her work in the transportation sector across the region, and Karina Kaye’s activism in local environmental and social justice issues.

The Ventura County Fair Board allowed 805AgKids to host youth livestock shows at the Ventura County Fairgrounds and gave the nod to what could shape up to be the final gun show at the fairground.

Local law enforcement reported to the public and County Board of Supervisors about their interactions with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as part of the Truth Act. We also continued to report on issues within Ventura County Behavioral Health and shortcomings in ensuring that local residents with severe mental illness are able to be treated locally.

NOVEMBER

This month the city of Ventura voted to keep portions of Downtown Main Street closed. Originally planned as a temporary adaptation to support restaurants by providing more outdoor dining areas amidst pandemic guidance, the city chose to make “Main Street Moves” a permanent feature.

VCR was on the scene in Santa Paula when the main creditor of the former wastewater treatment facility operator threatened Jeff Barry, a former investigator with the Ventura County District Attorney’s office, with a lawsuit if he shared his story about investigating the 2014 chemical explosion and fires, which led to company officials being indicted. In another story, we covered a study that demonstrated that radioactive contamination from the Santa Susana Field Lab was dispersed to other areas by the Woolsey Fire, in contradiction of a previously released state report.

DECEMBER

Our recent year-end news stories highlighted the “justifiable homicide” findings in the police-involved shooting death of Javier Magaña. We also reported on the National Defense Strategy Forum held each year at the Ronald Reagan Library and the retirement of Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen, who shepherded the county through arguably the hardest fire years ever seen. The city of Ventura was in the hot seat for the proposed streamlined development permit process, which it ultimately adopted. Time will tell if the new streamlined process yields the type of development officials and public support. One of our final news stories of the year focused on the pending closure of three parking levels of the parking structure on Harbor Boulevard in Ventura, which is expected to take place in early 2022 in advance of repairs.

How and where to recycle your Christmas tree in Ventura County

‘Twas the week after Christmas and all through the County treecycling was popular; some got back a mulch bounty.

The trees were placed in curbside carts with great care, in hopes the recycling truck soon would be there.

by David Goldstein ven though Christmas tree recycling is an annual ritual, differing rules, dates and deadlines in various parts of Ventura County can make collection and dropoff confusing. The advertisements, fliers and online outreach from each city are seen by residents of other areas, but each resident needs to know their own city’s rules.

Other than grinding your tree and using the mulch or composting it on site, the best “treecycling” method for the environment, requiring the least amount of truck-idling time and transportation, is for you to cut your tree into four-foot segments and fit the pieces into your regular curbside yard waste recycling cart. As long as your tree is free of decorations, stands or other items, it will be mulched with your other yard clippings.

Fire-proofed trees should be placed in garbage carts rather than yard waste carts, and you must remove decorations and stands, but trees flocked with fake snow are acceptable in all cities except Thousand Oaks.

If you will not cut your tree to fit into your cart, free whole-tree pickup on the regular day of collection is scheduled for these areas: • Harrison & Sons and Waste Management/GI Industries collection in unincorporated areas: Dec. 27 through Jan. 7.

• These same haulers (with Athens taking over in Thousand Oaks, on Jan. 1 through Jan. 16) in Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and Moorpark through Jan. 7.

• Athens Services in Santa Paula through Jan. 8.

If you set out a tree after a deadline or in an area without free collection, you will be charged for special collection unless you make separate arrangements. In most areas, you can make these arrangements by calling your refuse collector and requesting your annually allocated “free bulky item collection.”

If you live in a multi-family building without yard waste service, ask your apartment manager to contract separately with your hauler for special service.

For businesses, homes without curbside yard waste service and apartments without yard waste collection bins, Christmas tree recycling dropoff sites are available during operating hours and will be free through Jan. 10 at the following locations: • Agromin Organics, 6859 Arnold Road, near Oxnard, Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Agromin’s corporate office, 201 Kinetic Drive, Oxnard, Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m..

• Peach Hill Soils’ retail site at Performance Nursery, at 6101 E. Los Angeles Ave., Somis, Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday 7 a.m.-2 p.m..

• Peach Hill Soils compost site, 10765 W. Los Angeles Ave., near Moorpark, Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m.-2 p.m..

Agromin and Peach Hill offer free bags of mulch or compost to residents dropping off trees at these locations.

Here are some other options: • Waste Management’s Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center, 2801 Madera Road, allows free tree dropoff Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Jan. 15.

• Moorpark provides its residents with a free dropoff location on Marquette Street at Park Crest Lane through Jan. 9.

• Santa Paula’s downtown train station dropoff is open through Jan. 8.

• Oxnard residents may drop off trees free at the Del Norte Regional Recycling and Transfer Station, through Jan. 29, at the scale house Monday-Saturday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. or at the buyback center Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m..

In most areas, residents can also put out extra trash after Christmas. For example, residents of unincorporated areas get free collection of up to two extra 50-gallon bags on their day of collection through Jan. 8. Ojai residents may double their setout, using tied bags adjacent to trash carts and collapsed cardboard next to their recycling, through Jan. 8. Moorpark residents can set out up to three extra bags of trash or recycling at no extra charge through Jan. 10.

021 was a year of highs and lows. It started off with a terrifying number of COVID cases, and a light at the end of the tunnel as vaccines became more readily available. Schools continued to struggle with distance learning and then a hybrid model, but everyone eagerly returned to campus full time in the fall. Restaurants reopened, closed, and reopened again, entertainment came out of cars and got back onstage (including indoor venues) and current events stopped being all about viruses. Local politics, climate change, amazing people and organizations and a whole bunch of special issues made for a diverse collection of features over the course of a year at the Ventura County Reporter.

~ JANUARY ~ Rising COVID-19 cases put a damper on the holiday season, so we started the new year with a soothing story about a stunning outdoor destination: the remote, beautiful and wildlife-rich grassland of the Carrizo Plain . . . which just happened to celebrate its 20-year anniversary as a national monument on Jan. 17, 2021. This was followed by an in-depth look at a Sacramento-based PAC advocating against stricter regulations of oil drilling in Ventura County. Health took center stage in January as well, with a profile of a local man struggling to overcome a COVID-induced stroke and our first-ever Health and Fitness Issue.

~ FEBRUARY ~ Future development at Channel Islands Harbor and Fisherman’s Wharf in Oxnard were in the spotlight again, as residents and city officials came together via Zoom to discuss potential visions and wish lists for the waterside locations. But it was COVID-19 which continued to dominate our coverage, with investigations into home treatments for the disease and the search for effective regimens. We also presented another special issue devoted to the “great outdoors,” with stories on local hikes, the growing popularity of golf, freediving, archery on horseback and more.

~ MARCH ~ March is traditionally Women’s History Month, so we kicked off the month with a Q&A with the Museum of Ventura County’s Barbara Barnard Smith Executive Director Elena Brokaw and, later, another with Oxnard intensivist Elizabeth Babu, MD. The thorny issue of mental health care — the struggles of the families dealing with it, the lack of local resources to treat it and the role of police when a crisis hits — was examined at length, as were the efforts to restore Ormond Beach in Oxnard. In March we also featured the winners of our annual Photo Contest, with the theme of “Our Pandemic Year.”

~ APRIL ~ In 2010, Ignacio Ixta Junior of Oxnard was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Due to the dogged determination of his parents, a local investigative reporter and a pro bono legal team, that wrongful conviction was finally overturned, and Ixta was released from prison on April 13, 2021.

In April we devoted much of our coverage to in-depth reporting on the case, which included its history, the people involved, the conflicting eyewitness accounts and more. We also introduced the VC Voices series, with a Q&A with Celina Zacarias of Oxnard; took a look at local efforts to eliminate fossil fuels; and saluted the many chefs and restaurants of Ventura County with a new Dining Issue.

History in Ventura County took the spotlight the first half of May. We looked at the agricultural legacy of the Maulhardt family, whose ancestors arrived in Ventura County more than 150 years ago, and who donated 52 acres of their land to Oxnard Union High School District for the creation of the new Del Sol High School. We also spoke with ethnohistorian Jonathan Cordero, Ph.D., who discussed the romanticized history of the mission era and the effects of that period on the California Indians. Dan Curry, an Emmy award-winning visual effects supervisor who worked on four Star Trek series, came to town to give a talk for the Ventura County Chapter of the Aerospace and Defense Forum, and he discussed his long and illustrious career in a fascinating Q&A. We wrapped up the month with a Memorial Day issue devoted to boating, biking, zip lining and other exciting summer activities.

~ JUNE ~

Fraud related to the local produce sold at Certified Farmers Markets was the subject of our first feature in June, as we delved into the way growers outside the area find ways to cheat the system. We also considered the opportunities presented by manufactured homes, particularly in areas ravaged by wildfires, and the childcare providers fighting for a living wage. The June 24 edition was our “people issue,” in which we recognized the movers, shakers and characters that make Ventura County so special. We wrapped up the month with a sobering report on the disturbing allegations of sexual abuse at Ojai’s prestigious Thacher School, which came to light as the result of an investigation made by Los Jose and Veronica Rodriguez Photo by Luis Chavez Angeles law firm Munger, Tolles and Olson.

~ JULY ~

Oil well drilling permits, abandoned wells and offshore oil drilling (specifically at Rincon Island) were the subject of an “Eye on Climate” at the start of the month, followed up by the need for a Hazard Mitigation Plan — and the Office of Emergency Service’s request for public input — later in July.

One of our biggest stories, however, was the return of the Ventura Music Festival, which went live once again in 2021 and featured trombonist Aubrey Logan, string trio Time for Three and classical guitarist Andrea Roberto. At the end of the month, it was all about Slate’s Famous and Naked. Because, let’s face it: In July 2021, who didn’t need a stiff drink?

~ SEPTEMBER ~

Melissa Baffa was named executive director of the Ventura Land Trust in the summer of 2021, and we did a profile of the environmental activist in our first issue for September. We followed that story up with a report on the bald eagles returning to Channel Islands National Park and a historic look at Ventura County through the imagery of Herman Keene obtained by the Museum of Ventura County. But our grooviest edition in September was the annual Best of Ventura County issue, listing the favorite shops, vendors, restaurants and more as voted on by our readers in 2021. We hit the dance floor in honor of all our winners with a disco-inspired theme that was out of sight. Kimberly Rivers had the privilege of speaking with Suz Montgomery — Ventura resident, lifelong community activist, local government watchdog and more — a few weeks before she passed away (on Oct. 12, 2021, at the age of 73), and the VCReporter published some of her final thoughts and reflections in our Sept. 30 issue.

~ OCTOBER ~

Climate change was in the spotlight once again, as we considered issues related to water in the Ventura County Watershed, the frightening prospect that it might all be drying up, and what changes we can make now to safeguard it for the future.

The history of U.S. Pony Clubs made for a fun and inspiring change of pace on Oct. 14, while our Oct. 21 Women’s Issue put the focus on local women making waves in Ventura County. Coverage in October ended, appropriately, with Halloween, and an interview with Reign of Terror Haunted House creator Bruce Stanton.

~ NOVEMBER ~ Día de los Muertos takes place Nov. 1-2. In 2021, many organizations celebrated this holiday during the weekend of Nov. 5. So we began the month of November with an in-depth look at Day of the Dead, its roots, its importance to the Latinx community and local celebrations in our Nov. 4 issue. The ecological impact of beavers in California — specifically on the Central Coast — was investigated as well. Community activists and industry leaders butted heads over the proposed North American beaver reopening of a Santa Paula wastewater treatment facility, while VIP Dog Teams was the subject of a story on therapy-facility dogs.

~ AUGUST ~

In the summer of 2021, staff writer Kimberly Rivers got a tip about Bu and Jenny Hwang, Korean immigrants who operated the Wienerschnitzel on Harbor Boulevard in Ventura for 30 years. They finally retired at the end of July 2021, and we tell the story of their arrival here — and the way they turned your average fast food restaurant into a community hub — in our Aug. 5 issue. Also covered in August: controversy and complaints over the appointment of a port commissioner at Ventura Harbor, pass/no pass options for high school students, and the growing popularity of cornhole, with an in-depth look at Spencer Makenzie’s Throw Down Cornhole Tournament John Karayan. and Music Festival.

We returned to the Channel Islands for a story on the circumnavigation of San Miguel Island, the westernmost isle in the National Park. We also presented our 2021 Ventura County Holiday Gift Guide, followed up with a last-minute gift guide and a bunch of local sources for fabulous presents as selected by VCReporter staff. Also covered in December: a roundup of holiday entertainment, the impact of drought on local beekeepers and honey production, and a profile of Terry Pendleton, whose long and distinguished career in Major League Baseball got its start playing ball with others in the Colonia neighborhood of Oxnard.

Despite a worldwide pandemic that still hasn’t gone away, an economy in flux and a political climate that remains divisive, we have weathered the worst of the (current) storm. At least, I like to think so. We’ve been tested, but we’re still holding on, and I’ve no doubt we can keep on keeping on no matter what the future may hold. #VenturaCountyStrong — now and forever. Here’s to 2022.

Always on the move They switched from one format to the next, but art institutions maintained their momentum all year long

rom a rough winter to a brighter summer, the local art and culture world followed the path of the pandemic in 2021. The beginning of the year continued to see virtual performances and outdoor productions, but as temperatures heated up (and shots found their way into arms) the great indoors welcomed visitors once again.

Early in the year, the Museum of Ventura County played it safe with its Up Close and Personal Zoom series, hosted

by Ivor Davis and featuring local notables such as folk-rock icon Chris Hillman and actor Malcolm McDowell. California Lutheran University brought together three U.S. poets laureate, who took part in the college’s webinar series Voices of the Nation. Interesting things were happening beyond the computer screens as well, with open-air events like Art City’s Fitness Palooza, held in the Stone Garden, and Studio Channel Islands’ drive-by exhibit of photos projected onto the outside of the art center’s walls. Pamela Pilkenton brought Ventura County Ballet dancers onto the porch of her Midtown Ventura studio for a performance she playfully called “Peep From the Street.”

Theater companies followed suit. Conejo Players Theatre staged its production of Last Train to Nibroc, performed live with actors on stage but streamed for audiences at home, while Concerts in Your Car opened its 2021 season in April with Opera Santa Barbara’s Don Pasquale. Clue Live! brought immersive theater to Downtown Ventura, with an all-ages production that let participants play detective on a walking tour/whodunnit puzzle inspired by the popular board game.

But by then, the tide was beginning to turn. As a wave of vaccinations swept across the county, galleries and museums started allowing guests inside once again and even the Oxnard Film Society headed back to the theater. Many special events were back on as well: Art in the Park resumed at Libbey Park over Memorial Day Weekend, the Ventura Art and Street Painting Festival was back at Ventura Harbor in September and, in October, dozens of vendors set up booths at the Ventura County Fairgrounds to sell their handmade items at the Harvest Festival ® Original Arts and Crafts Fair.

Mask mandates, reservations, social distancing and other health and safety protocols were in place, but for most, it was a small price to pay to for these live, in-person experiences.

By the summer, we were able to enjoy

live theater once again, with nearly every stage hosting a drama, comedy or musical.

Directors and actors explored thorny familial relationships (Eleemosynary, Family Furniture), generational, sociopolitical and racial divides (Wrench, The Last, Best Small Town, Severance Play) and more. October saw both the Women’s Voices Festival (at NAMBA Performing Arts Space) and the Ojai Storytelling Festival, while in November, the Bank of America Performing Arts Center was the setting for a one-man Star Wars trilogy. And of course, December was filled with a variety of holiday entertainment countywide.

One spot in particular enjoyed an exciting 2021: The Channel Islands Maritime Museum in Oxnard celebrated its 30-year anniversary with an entire year of programming, something new every month. It kicked things off in January with a Grub and Grog recipe contest sponsored by Black Bart Navy Rum, encouraged people of all ages to think about the environment with an ecologically designed boat contest in April and, once visitors could attend in person again, welcomed them with a whole series of new maritime art exhibits, including Art of the Sailor over the summer and 1991: Celebrating 30 Years of Art That Sails, which featured some never-before-displayed pieces in the museum’s collection. We also interviewed Executive Director Adri Howe in June.

The year wasn’t without its losses, however. We mourned the passing of local artists Norman Kirk (January), Carole Milton (March) and Margaret “Margy” Crawford Gates (June). And the Ventura Film Society, which had been “bringing people together in the dark” since 2008, finally disbanded in 2021, citing venue closures and a growing reliance on digital media as contributing factors.

The vision for public life in general, and arts institutions in particular, is brighter as we gaze into 2022. Nevertheless, artists of all kinds continue to struggle with the loss of income brought on by mandated shutdowns of performance spaces, galleries and venues where artwork can be seen, enjoyed and purchased. This year, I hope we can all find ways to support the painters, sculptors, filmmakers, photographers, musicians, dancers and other artists in (and beyond) Ventura County. During the pandemic, they continued to be there for a community hungry for art and engagement.

As things improve on other fronts, it’s a good time to return the favor.

It truly was a year to remember. A year of food, fests and favorites

here was more than takeout on the menu this year. Ventura County diners were thrilled to make reservations at their favorite restaurants once indoor dining resumed, and many of the usual food and drink festivals came back as well. The Avenue celebrated Taco Week, seafood establishments celebrated National Clam Chowder Day, and several new eateries left favorable impressions on the local dining scene. Here’s what made us say “yum” in 2021.

Lots of Mexican food was covered in In Good Taste this year. And why not? When you have so many fabulous options, you might as well take advantage of them. Among our favorites were Ventura’s Taqueria Cuernavaca (particularly beloved for its tasty breakfasts), Oxnard’s Tacos Mi Pueblo (heavenly meats served on homemade tortillas) and Marina Cafe at Lake Casitas (surprisingly good, homemade Mexican food, plus a stellar view). We also gave a shout-out to Westside Ventura’s first-ever Avenue Taco Week, which took place in September, and reviewed Ventura Harbor’s Baja Bay Surf N Taco, which got new owners in 2021 and quickly made a name for itself with amazing fish tacos, delicious agua frescas and more.

In Good Taste wasn’t all restaurant reviews in 2021. We threw some love towards organizations and communities that put on food-focused events, too. We encouraged everyone to support locally owned restaurants during Oxnard Restaurant Week in January and Conejo Valley Restaurant Week in February . . . while also noting some of our favorite spots for clam chowder on Feb. 25, National Clam Chowder Day (who knew?). In May, Andres Nuño, organizer of the annual Surf ’n’ Suds Beer Festival, held a virtual beer tasting that included information (no samples!) on cannabis as well, dubbing the event Surf ’n’ Suds (+Buds). He followed that up in October with a live festival, held once again at San Buenaventura State Beach. We put the spotlight on the 20th Annual Thousand Oaks Rotary Wine and Beer Festival in August.

Starting the day off with a good breakfast is an ever-popular reason to go out to eat. Even when restrictions were in place, good weather allowed us to enjoy our morning meals on sunny patios while keeping risks to a minimum. Thus, breakfast and brunch were some of our favorite 2021 meals. One of the newest members of the breakfast club was Frontside Cafe, which opened at the end of 2020 and made quite a splash with its mix of yummy baked goods, hearty Australian-inspired fare and avocado toast as artfully composed as a still life painting.

But mostly it was longstanding institutions that deeply satisfied. We loved Golden Egg Cafe’s veggie-heavy Benedict, crispy chilaquiles and great mimosa deals . . . but the divine cinnamon roll and charming porch really elevated this spot. Local favorite Eggs ’n’ Things (around since 1974, several locations in Ventura County) is beloved for a reason: hearty and delicious egg dishes (the chile verde is particularly good!), fluffy Belgian waffles, golden brown French toast and buttery, delicate Swedish pancakes — a not-to-be-missed specialty of the house.

There were several new (or new-ish) restaurants to explore in 2021. We sampled and enjoyed hearty savory pies from the Raven Tavern in Oxnard, but found the grown-up grilled cheese sandwich to be out of this world. When Burnin’ Mouth (also in Oxnard) became the local source for Nashville hot chicken, we discovered agony and ecstasy in equal measure with its spicy yet mouthwatering “sandos.” Old Town Camarillo got a fabulous pizza option thanks to Freda’s Woodfired Kitchen and gourmet ice cream courtesy of Rori’s Artisanal Creamery — both located at The Mark — while Downtown Ventura got a snazzy new gastropub in The Six Chow House. Vegans countywide rejoiced at the opening of the punked-up Fatty Vegan in Ventura, but those meatless creations are good enough to satisfy even the finickiest carnivore. Bamboo Room (Westlake), Bank of Italy Cocktail Trust (Ventura) and the new bar at Rabalais’ Bistro (Santa Paula) all brought delicious and distinctive libations to the fore.

We hope you enjoyed feasting, festing, snacking and drinking your way through 2021 as much as we did.

As ever, there was a lot on the menu, with freshness and flavor to spare. Good times and good eats.

One of the 20th century’s most famous works of art was “Fountain.” It was scandalous when it appeared in 1917, since it consisted entirely of a white porcelain urinal. Marcel Duchamp, the artist who presented it, was a critic of the art market and loved mocking conventional thought. Years later, however, evidence emerged suggesting that “Fountain” may not have been Duchamp’s idea — that in fact he “borrowed” it from Cancerian artist and poet Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. There’s still disagreement among art scholars about what the facts are. But if definitive proof ever arrives that von Freytag-Loringhoven was the originator, it will be in 2022. This will be the year many Cancerians finally get the credit they deserve.

Microbiologist Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928. It was later described as “the single greatest victory ever achieved over disease” — an antidote to dangerous infections caused by bacteria. But there’s more to the story. Fleming’s strain of penicillin could only be produced in tiny amounts — not nearly enough to become a widespread medicine. It wasn’t until 1943 that a different strain of penicillin was found — one that could be mass-produced. The genius who made this possible was Mary Hunt, a humble researcher without a college degree. By 1944, the new drug was saving thousands of lives. I mention Hunt because she’s a good role model for you in 2022. I believe you’ll have chances to improve on the work of others, generating excellent results. You may also improve on work you’ve done in the past.
