live in Ventura, and I’m a Ventura County Behavioral Health (VCBH) client. I live with multiple mental health issues; depression, PTSD and substance abuse disorder.

It has come to my attention that services at VCBH are being reduced (specifically the elimination of therapy on a weekly basis).

I rely on close medication monitoring and individual weekly therapy as integral to my recovery. In reducing these services, there is a risk of me becoming a danger to myself and the community.

In the recent climate of mental healthrelated violent acts, I urge the public to consider public mental health services as vital to keeping our community safe and supporting those with disabilities. Spending slightly more taxes to hire two new therapists and a new psychiatrist at VCBH could actually help save the community money. The cost of incarceration and repairing the damage from preventable crime can be steep.

I know that without these services I would not be the strong and healthy individual that I am today. I feel it is my duty to call attention to this dire need and compel our town to act on its own best interest.

Trump. I agree that Trump is hideous, but he is a symptom of a much larger problem, a corrupt SYSTEM that the “resistance movement” blindly ignores.

What is important to recognize is how our government has changed, from a democracy of the people, to an oligarchy of corporations. It is exemplified through corrupt crony capitalism, or a “shadow state” of unelected power ruled by weapons contractors and other Fortune 500 companies. Together, they work for their bottom line of huge profits and “fullspectrum-dominance,” while they hide their taxes through loopholes and shelters overseas, contributing nothing to American democracy.

Further, they use and control departments of government, the mainstream media and militarized police connected to “das Homeland” to surveil and control each of us. So much control do they seem to have that they will prevent you from feeding the homeless on the streets where you live!

This immoral, ill-compassionate system was not the creation of Donald Trump. It is a system he inherited (and which he cooperates/colludes with) that has been building its corrupt state ever so slowly, getting us to where we are today — frogs simmering in its polluted waters.

Intentional kindness v. the holiday blues

A

fter several false starts at writing this editorial from the perspective of a psychologist and professor, I began wondering, “Who needs another article about the holiday blues?” With the evening news continuing to stream incessant reminders of violent tragedies, political battles and the latest evidence of climate change, there are also seasonal humaninterest stories of charity and acts of kindness. Undoubtedly, the holiday season is a time for reflection, gratitude and forgiveness. As another year comes to a close on Tuesday, it is a time to make plans with family and friends, reaffirm our connection to faith, and make New Year’s resolutions.

Yet, still another holiday tradition has become the public service announcements and advice columns about the holiday blues by mental health experts. As a member of that tribe, I feel obliged to remind the reader that there are many among us who are likely to experience the holidays in a state of hopelessness, sadness and estrangement. Camouflaged by festive decorations and lights, there are some who face a reality of domestic violence, poverty and dread. Perhaps this contrast between the public appearance of joyfulness and a private experience that might be quite the opposite is what triggers the blues.

Whereas many children enjoy the holidays with excitement and optimism, there are also those who feel left out and alone.

Parents who may not be able to lavish gifts on their loved ones may, likewise, feel distraught and inadequate. We could blame the problem on commercialism or media hype, but the collective expectation of happiness is certain to marginalize those for whom happiness feels impossible. All year long, we hear and see stories like these, so do we really need another reminder 4— — December 26, 2019

of these hardships? Reminders such as these do help motivate beneficence and gratitude, at least temporarily. The more difficult question is how to remember beneficence and gratitude the rest of the year.

I thought, therefore, that I would try to inspire the reader with the story of my WORST holiday experience. When I was 15 years old, I faced the holiday season with profound dread. Earlier that year, my mother and grandmother had passed away. My father had died four years earlier. My 19-year-old brother and I were completely alone and on our own. We lived in a tiny onebedroom apartment supporting ourselves with minimum wage

Ask yourselves, “What can I do to create a memory that I might treasure for life?” jobs and a small Social Security check. I worked as a busboy and my brother worked at a hot dog stand. We were barely scraping by financially, but we were together and determined to survive.

Also during that time, the Vietnam War was at its peak, so we were in constant fear of my brother being drafted. We lived with that tension and our shared grief while doing the best we could to conceal it from teachers and employers.

One evening, perhaps Christmas Eve, I was waiting at the bus stop in front of the hotel where I worked. The bus wasn’t due for another half an hour, so I decided to splurge on a box of See’s Candies nuts and chews, a family favorite. I boarded the unusually crowded bus with the chocolates under my arm.

As I rode along, I imagined an anthology of stories about the people on the bus. As it was late, there were no other children on the bus, just an array of people either going home or heading to work the graveyard shift. I noticed one man, in particular, sitting next to the rear exit of the bus. He appeared to be middleaged, clearly poor, and deeply sad. I thought for a moment that someday that could be me — the inevitable outcome of a “deprived childhood.” When my stop came close, I walked to the exit and saw the man look at me with half a smile. I gave him my See’s Candies and wished him (and myself) a merry Christmas. That year proved to be my most TREASURED, worst holiday ever! What was yours?

Ask yourselves, “What can I do to create a memory that I might treasure for life?” In each of our lives, we encounter others who are never truly seen or acknowledged. There are people for whom we have inattentional blindness, a blindness that comes from ignoring. Consider the supermarket checkers and baggers, the trash collector and the fast-food employees who we expect service from but are rarely acknowledged, except for when we are critical of them. I believe that the best prevention of the holiday blues is intentional kindness — simple acts of compassion, recognition or encouragement that remind both parties that they are not alone, that they matter, and that they have the power to transform lives. I’ll never know anything more about that man on the bus I met so many years ago, but I do know that he lives in my mind, as I may have lived in his. ♦ Michael J. “Housing Crisis 805” CAUSE report examines roots and solutions

A

report called “Housing Crisis 805” detailing the aspects of “the perfect storm of today’s housing crisis” has been released by the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE).

The report provides data and insight into how particular communities are impacted by the lack of affordable housing and offers three main directives that cities and the county could take to ensure all residents have access to adequate housing, with a focus on policies that don’t displace existing residents.

First, approve policies that allow more affordable housing in areas that have previously excluded that option, rather than promoting development in low-income areas. This approach helps avoid gentrification and displacement when residents are pushed out of their neighborhoods. Second, in areas currently zoned for single family homes, a variety of density level could be allowed, such as granny flats, duplexes and triplexes. And finally, the rezoning of industrial and commercial areas that are no longer being fully utilized would not displace residents nor contribute to sprawl and would utilize existing infrastructure. For example, big box stores that are shuttered or malls with empty spots can be remodeled for housing.

The report is based on in-person responses to surveys conducted by members of CAUSE in immigrant and working class communities in

Ventura and Santa Barbara counties over the summer. In Ventura County, the survey was conducted in Oxnard, Ventura and Santa Paula.

The data collected reveals how rising rents, stagnant wages and limited housing impact community members with particular vulnerabilities related to language, immigration status and skin color. The report also presents some solutions for decision makers and planners tackling the problem at the local level.

Root causes According to the report, federal housing dollars dwindled in the 1970s, mostly replaced by the Section 8 voucher program. By focusing subsidies in this way, low income renters were now competing for market rate units with the middle class, reducing the drive to build low income housing while competition drove up rents.

In the 1980s, developers responded to the increased demand for large, single-family homes with vast subdivisions that generally were not affordable for low income families.

At the same time, California’s Redevelopment Agencies, the channel for affordable housing funding, was scrapped by then Gov. Jerry Brown during the state budget cuts of the “Great Recession.”

Today, many landlords refuse to rent to those with Section 8 vouchers, making housing for those renters scarce and leaving those individuals vulnerable to intimidation and unsafe or unsanitary living conditions. A new law, SB 329, prohibits California landlords from refusing

to rent to those with Section 8 vouchers, but those renters still have to speak up.

having to make the choice of buying less food, or foregoing healthcare in order to pay their rent.

The working homeless Those past policies and housing market influencers laid the groundwork for what we are seeing today.

In addition, a recent trend is being reported nationally about foreign investors targeting “up and coming” neighborhoods, typically communities of color. Those companies buy up older housing stock, renovate and increase rents, thus creating highly desirable neighborhoods attractive to more affluent renters. As prices are driven up in these traditionally lower-rent areas, the ripple effects drive up rents across town.

From 2014 to 2019, rent has increased on the Central Coast 27 percent, while wages have only gone up 8 percent. Today the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Ventura is $1900. The combination of rising rents and stagnant wages leads to a new class of people — the working homeless.

According to CAUSE’s report, 38 percent of the population in Ventura County are renters, with renters making up 50 percent of the residents in Oxnard, 46 percent in Ventura and 45 percent in Santa Paula. Overall, 55 percent of renters are “cost burdened” by the rent they pay, meaning more than 30 percent of their income is spent on rent — making renters particularly vulnerable to losing their home if they lose a job, get sick or have some other emergency that reduces funds for rent. Solutions The answer seems simple: build more affordable housing. The CAUSE report also suggests that building high-end luxury homes could take the strain off existing mid-level housing stock by providing a place for those who can afford it to go, opening up lower-cost housing options to those with limited income.

But the problem is bigger than just building more homes. Creative approaches at the planning stage and stronger public-private connections are needed to set the stage for more flexibility and equitable approaches down the road.

CAUSE suggests things like a housing bond to fund new affordable housing, or revitalizing existing housing and offering subsidized loans to local residents. Those programs can be managed by local nonprofit organizations (such as housing authorities) in partnership with local government. Other “no-cost options” offered in the report include streamlining permitting for affordable housing

and relaxing certain prohibitive rules, such as the number of parking spaces required, to incentivize and lower the initial costs for building affordable units. There are other alternative models, such as community land trusts and limited equity co-ops, that can be encouraged.

PACC back on track?

Oxnard in talks to keep performing arts center open

Efforts are under way to keep Oxnard’s Performing Arts and Convention Center (the PACC) going, Oxnard City Manager Alex Nguyen told the City Council on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Nguyen said he is talking with Lance Sterling of Sterling Venue Ventures about taking over management of the center, which has been teetering on the brink of closure because of the city’s budget cuts.

Sterling operates the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills and the Saban

Theater in Beverly Hills, among other ventures.

“The goal is to have Sterling be the property manager with options to manage in cooperation with the PACC board,” Nguyen said.

The non-profit PACC has been looking for a permanent manager since June, when the city council slashed Oxnard’s budget and cut spending on the center and the Carnegie Art Museum.

After protests from the community, the council gave the PACC enough money to keep going through the end of the year. Nguyen said there is enough funding to keep the center

going through February. In addition, as reported in the Dec. 12 issue of the VCReporter (“.Paak @ PACC?”), the PACC has been operating in the black and amassed around $100,000 in savings.

Nguyen’s report was followed by public comments from numerous PACC supporters, including members of Oxnard Musical Youth (O’My) Theater, which practices and performs at the center.

“O’My is a critical part of our community, providing an affordable, high-quality theater program for our children,” said Jessica St. Pierre, whose daughter, Natalie, has

been in the theater for two years. She said that the theater helped children learn leadership skills like cooperation, respect, adaptability, flexibility and commitment, but most importantly, “a safe place to be themselves and have fun.”

St. Pierre was followed by several more of members of the group as well as the theater’s director, Cheryl Kewley.

“Since your announcement in June, we’ve searched for another venue,” but haven’t found one, said Kewley told councilmembers.

Heroics in Hacking

he third annual Hackathon by the Sea took place Dec. 6-7 at the Ventura County Office of Education’s Conference and Educational Services Center in Camarillo.

The overnight coding event, open to all Ventura County high school students in grades 9 through 12, brought in 157 participants from across the county. Students worked in teams to design and code applications and games with the assistance of 50 volunteer mentors. Projects ran the gamut, from helping immigrants assimilate to saving marine life to combat-

ting heart disease. While all teams displayed extraordinary creativity and technological acumen, a few were recognized by the judges.

The overall winner was Turtle Trouble, a survival game developed by Kalea Gin, Sofia Ieraci and Matthew Omidghaemi (all of Westlake High School) to raise awareness about marine pollution. Best Demo went to immigrant-assimilation app Social Vista, created by Allison Tang, Ishya Cherukupalli and Shyla Yadav of Oak Park High School. Modified Pacemaker by Melvin Soriano (El Camino High School) was judged Most Creative, while Gabriel Bacon and Paul Kim of Ventura High School took home the Most Technical prize.

Their Snitch-Master 3000 was designed to help teachers take more accurate attendance. A special Humanity Award went to the R.O.M.A. application, which will enable a user “to seek personalized company that won’t judge them.”

JANUARY

The state of Washington, on Jan. 1, bans anyone under 21 years old from purchasing a semiautomatic assault rifle. | The ongoing government shutdown becomes the longest in U.S. history on Jan. 12 when it reaches 22 days; 800,000 employees are left unpaid. On Jan. 25, President Trump agrees to temporarily end the shutdown by supporting a deal to fund federal agencies for three weeks. | The U.S. Justice Department charges Chinese technology firm Huawei with multiple counts of fraud on Jan. 28.

We kicked 2019 off with a road trip of sorts in a fun interview with a retired teacher who now spends his days traveling the nation solo by motorcycle. Church leaders discussed spiritual and emotional exhaustion — particularly relevant in the face of Ventura County’s numerous natural disasters as well as the November 2018 Borderline shooting. The wonders of the queen bee and living underwater were both explored in in-depth features.

In Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3, the New England Patriots defeat the Los Angeles Rams, 13–3. Tom Brady, the quarterback of the Patriots, wins his sixth championship which marks the most National Football League world championships ever won by a single player. | President Trump declares a national emergency on Feb. 15 for access to funds for his proposed border wall. He issues the first veto of his presidency on March 15, striking down a Senate resolution to end his national emergency declaration. | U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant Christopher Paul Hasson is arrested on Feb. 20. He planned a domestic terrorist attack targeting politicians and journalists.

The decline in school enrollment countywide was a hot topic in February, as were concerns over a report that showed that Ventura County has one of California’s worst naturalization rates for immigrants who are eligible to become U.S. citizens. Two Boy Scout troops in Camarillo welcomed girls into the program for the first time, and winter warming shelters in Oxnard went from nightly to 24-hour operation.

Wildlife corridors were approved in March by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors. We also looked at gut refloralization (aka fecal microbial transplant), the consequences of industrial farming, surprisingly short tax refunds and the brief, sudden influx of thousands of migrating painted lady butterflies.

APRIL We began April by looking at some sobering statistics related to the decline in insect populations. Later, women in business and leadership took center stage when we covered the 20th Annual BRAVO Awards, hosted by the Ventura County chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.

We also featured an in-depth interview with Oxnard City Manager Alex Nguyen. At the end of the month, we had weed on the mind, as we put MediCannaCon, the first Ojai Medical Marijuana Conference, in the spotlight.

The city of Oxnard’s $9.2 billion shortfall — and Oxnard City Manager Alex Nguyen’s efforts to “stop the bleeding” — dominated the headlines in May. Among several budgetcutting measures considered were the closing of the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center (PACC), Carnegie Art Museum and Colonia Branch Library; canceling the Fourth of July fireworks show at Channel Islands Harbor; and laying off several city employees.

The PACC ultimately received a subsidy to keep it open through the end of the year, although its future remains uncertain. And the fireworks did, in the end, go off on July 4 — paid for by five marijuana dispensaries in Port Hueneme, who collectively donated $30,000 for the cause.

Our June 6 issue came out on the 75th anniversary of D-Day, which was an opportunity for us to feature 100-year-old World War II veteran Don Knapp of Ventura. Next we put our focus on Ventura College and the $12 million Miriam Schwab endowment, which is allowing the college to expand its music department like never before. Also in June, we looked at the county’s thyroid cancer rates, which are the highest in California.

On June 7, NASA announces that the International Space Station will be commercialized beginning in 2020, allowing private companies to use it to conduct for-profit activities. | President Trump becomes, on June 30, the first sitting U.S. president to cross the Korean Demilitarized Zone and enter North Korea.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake hits Ridgecrest, California on July 4. It’s the largest in the region since the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. A stronger earthquake, magnitude 7.1, strikes the next day. | On July 6, billionaire registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is arrested on federal and state charges of sex trafficking. Epstein is found dead of apparent suicide in his cell on Aug. 10. | After 16 years, Attorney General William Barr reinstates the death penalty for federal crimes on July 25. The executions of five federal death row inmates are scheduled.

For the first time the Ventura County Board of Supervisors denied a request for more drilling in an active oil field. We highlighted local nonprofits helping area veterans and a new foster care program with a revised focus of reuniting children with their families. This month included our Local Heroes featuring residents nominated by readers — Janet Barron, Linda Catlin, Megan Mescher-Cox, Dennis Kolzer, Terri Hillard Olson and Kathy Powell.

Longtime Ventura city councilman Neal Andrews passed away. The VCReporter, along with our sister publications, was purchased by Arizona-based Times Publications. A judge accepts a settlement for the victims in the 2014 Santa Clara Waste Water explosion in Santa Paula. We examined why record numbers of dead or disoriented sea mammals have been found on the coastline, and reported on the shuttered squid fishery docks at the port. The local freezer storage murder case was back in the news as an accomplice was back in court. Ventura hosted the world’s largest cornhole tournament.

The U.S.’ 25 percent tariff hike on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports takes effect on May 10. | The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports on May 30 that so far, there have been 971 cases of measles in the U.S., the greatest number of cases in more than 25 years.

The fire and deaths aboard the Conception shocked the local and statewide boating community and made national headlines. We considered the impact of legal cannabis and hemp on illegal cannabis grows in Los Padres National Forest, while the county issued permits for 4,000 acres of industrial hemp. We reported on several threats made at local schools — a trend that is continuing. Sarah Jenks Flesher was named the Artwalk 2019 artist of distinction. Our annual Best Of issue was out of this world, and recognized community favorites in dozens of categories.

Puerto Rico governor Ricardo Rosselló resigns on Aug. 2 following massive protests partly because of his participation in a chat group with some members of his administration making vulgar, bigoted and homophobic comments. | A mass shooting on Aug. 3 at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas kills 22 and injures 24. | A whistleblower files a complaint on Aug. 12, which alleges that President of the United States

used the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election. Michael Atkinson, the inspector general for the intelligence community, deems the complaint an “urgent concern” and “credible” on Aug. 26. | The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports on Aug. 15 that July 2019 was the hottest month on record globally, at 1.71 degrees F above the 20th-century average of 60.4 degrees.

Public impeachment hearings against President Trump begin in the House of Representatives on Nov. 13. On Dec. 13, democrats on the House Judiciary Committee approve abuse of power and obstruction of Congress charges against the president, who becomes the fourth U.S. president in history to face impeachment.

On Dec. 18, the House votes to forward the two articles of impeachment to the Senate.

This month we featured how the community was remembering and continuing to mourn those lost at the Borderline shooting. Also in the spotlight were the local impacts of climate change and an earthquake swarm that shook Ventura. Who can forget Chebon, the cat who, through the kindness of a stranger, was returned to his owner after missing for seven years?

The PACC is staying open, but not without controversy. We reported on the opening of Spirit of Santa Paula’s permanent homeless shelter and the “Housing Crisis 805” report from CAUSE. Ventura banned no-cause evictions while the WAVES diving program helped wounded women veterans.

Ventura County loves movies — and not just because Hollywood is a mere hop, skip and jump down the 101. The medium is so popular that the Ventura Film Society, which took a three-year hiatus in 2016, returned in 2019, now under the leadership of Mike Miller (hand selected by founder Lorenzo DeStefano). Oxnard got into the action for the first time, debuting its new Sight + Sound film festival in September. The ever-popular Ojai Film Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary in November, followed not long after by the Ojai Short Film Fest in December.

The OFF wasn’t the only entity celebrating an anniversary.

2019 marked 20 years since the inception of Ventura County Pride, and the celebration of all things LGBTQ+ took place in Ventura at downtown’s Plaza Park in August.

Also over the summer, the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company presented two spirited productions at California Lutheran University. The fun, frivolous, mod-inspired Merry Wives of Windsor was set in the 1960s. But what really raised eyebrows was the gender-swapped version of Richard II, with actress Hannah Tamminen starring as popular political rival Bollingbroke. Unity Theatre Collective did something similar with The Importance of Being Earnest, where cast members played a variety of roles, bringing a fresh, relevant take to the material.

Ventura’s Westside was all about community during Va Por la Avenida, a series of bilingual events intended to bring neighbors together and celebrate the unique qualities that make the Avenue and adjacent areas so special. Festivities kicked off with Ofrenda (offering) in October, featuring — among many other things — handmade displays honoring loved ones who have passed away. Posadas just took place in December, and future events are planned for spring and summer 2020.

Drama on Stage

The theater world saw lots of ups and downs in 2019.

On the downside: Camarillo Skyway Playhouse found itself in the unenviable position of trying to find a new home when the Oxnard Union High School District (which owns the theater’s space near the Camarillo Airport) entertained plans to sell the building. For now, the theater company has been able to remain and present a season of quality productions, but it’s not clear how much longer the current situation can go on.

O’My Theater is in a similar predicament, as it joins the entire community of Oxnard in watching the drama unfold at

this time last year, Ventura County was still reeling from the twin disasters of the Borderline shooting and the Hill and Woolsey fires, with aftershocks from 2017’s Thomas Fire continuing to shake things up as well. The art world responded in the way it always does: with creative minds of all stripes putting their experiences, fears and hopes on canvas, in clay, on the page or otherwise built into the very fabric of their artistic expression.

This was seen most poignantly, perhaps, at the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks, which debuted Empathy: Beneath the Surface in October. The exhibit wasn’t concerned primarily with local tragedies, but its theme of “empathy and personal agency” was, indeed, inspired by the events of November 2018. In a community that feels, at times, torn by political, economic and social strife, the multimedia works on display served as a powerful reminder of the ties that connect all members of the human race, regardless of their differences.

While the shadows of those events seemed to lay over everything in 2019 (and not just in the art world), that wasn’t the only story being told.

the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center. The PACC was set to close due to budget shortfalls in the summer, along with the Colonia Branch library and the Carnegie Art Museum.

While the latter two institutions did, indeed, close, the PACC has been hanging on by a thread, thanks to robust programming and the interest of Oxnard-born luminaries such as Anderson .Paak and Cola Boyy. If the city decides to close the PACC at the end of 2019, O’My’s January production, Frozen Jr., could be left (pardon the pun) in the cold.

Also struggling to survive is The Elite — formerly Elite Theatre Company — in Oxnard, which changed artistic directors midstream and remains in a funding crisis.

There were, however, a few bright spots this year. Four new theater companies — Muse of Fire in Ojai, Beacon (run by Tom Eubanks), the aforementioned Unity Theatre Collective and Center Stage Players and Arts Repertory all made their debuts in 2019. For theater lovers, that means more modern, original and experimental productions are in the works, featuring all-inclusive casts and more ambitious material. It’s not easy keeping the curtains up on a theater company, but Ventura County has shown, again and again, that hard work and a true love of the art form can work wonders.

Fond Farewells

Ventura County lost some of its most luminous lights in 2019.

Art lovers far and wide mourned the passing of celebrity photographer Guy Webster (Ojai), expressionist painter and Studio Channel Islands co-founder Roxie Ray (Camarillo), watercolorist Katherine McGuire (formerly of Ventura) and painter Michael Jon “Mickey” Dvortcsak (Ojai).

Ventura County has certainly weathered its share of tragedy these last few years, which has been reflected in local art and culture. There have, however, been some bright spots as well. Here’s hoping for more of that in 2020. ♦

rom bowling alleys in Ventura to open air festivals in Vienna, from a legendary actor moonlighting as a singer/songwriter to a mask-wearing ska band moonlighting as cartoon superheroes, these are the shows and the artists that made a lasting impression on some of the Ventura County music scene’s finest in 2019.

“Collective Soul at the Ventura County Fair. One of my alltime favorite bands. When I heard they were touring, I started making plans to fly out to one of their shows. Then I heard they would be in our own backyard. Ed Roland’s voice is just amazing. Loved it!”

Then Jack, Brendan and the rest of the Raconteurs showed no rust from taking a break for a long time.”

It was our first real tour and we learned how to be a band because of what Good Riddance showed us. So to see them together 20 years later, still dominating the stage, brought back so many memories. I love all those guys and have so much respect for them.”

e always eat well in Ventura County, thanks in no small part to a robust ag industry and a beautiful environment that seduces chefs from near and far.

Looking back over our restaurant reviews in 2019, a few trends stood out. There were a lot of not-so-new places that our reviewers felt compelled to revisit and write about, and a real interest in cocktail culture, too.

As in years past, diners were drawn to eateries emphasizing a fresh, healthy, local and organic approach.

In 12 months of consuming a wide variety of cuisines, here are the restaurants that inspired us the most.

Most dogs enjoy chewing on a nice raw bone to pass the time; hers likes to mix things up with the occasional $200 tube of eye cream.

Your friend’s response to her delinquentdoodle destroying your stuff — “Yawn...whatever” — suggests she comes up short in a personality trait called “conscientiousness.”

Conscientiousness is one of the five core personality dimensions that shape how we typically behave (the other four being openness, extroversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability). Each of these dimensions reflects a spectrum — a scale from low to high — so, for example, extroversion includes everything from extreme extroversion to extreme introversion (the party animal versus the sort of animal that prefers hiding under a car till the shindig’s over).

Research by psychologists Joshua Jackson and Brent Roberts finds that people with high conscientiousness are responsible, hardworking, orderly, and able to control their impulses. (Their work was focused on the behaviors of the conscientious, as opposed to thoughts and feelings.)

Not surprisingly, other research — a cross-cultural study by psychologist Martin C. Melchers — finds that people with higher levels of conscientiousness tend to be more empathetic (making them less likely to react to their animal turning a friend’s possessions into chew toys by being all, “Dogs will be dogs!”).

Personality traits are, to a great extent, genetic, and tend to be pretty stable over time and across situations. However, psychologists Nathan Hudson and R. Chris Fraley find that

someone would be to clean up their act in the wake of “hitting bottom” versus, say, “hitting middle.”

Another demotivating factor might be your friend’s WTR — “welfare trade-off ratio” — a term that unfortunately sounds like illegal food stamp swapping. In fact, as evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Lars Penke explain, a person’s welfare tradeoff ratio refers to how much weight they place on their own interests relative to those of another person. In other words, “welfare” really means “well-being” — as in, “How willing am I to sacrifice what’s best for me so you can have what’s good for you?”

Buss and Penke add that people who are narcissistic — self-centered, exploitative, with a strong sense of entitlement, and lacking in empathy — “habitually place a higher weight on their own welfare relative to the welfare of others.” Now, maybe you don’t see this sort of selfish, cavalier attitude coming out habitually in your friend, but maybe that’s because friendship is fun-centered and thus doesn’t have the sort of strains put on it that a business partnership or relationship does. (You don’t have to decide whether to have an abortion because you went out for drinks with your friend.)

Where does this leave you?

y friend recently bought a $3,000 labradoodle but refuses to pay to get it trained. The dog is really badly behaved. Whenever I bring up the need for training, my friend gets very defensive and lashes out at me. Last time I visited her, the dog got into my bag and chewed through some seriously expensive skin care products I treated myself to. She acted like it wasn’t an issue and even said it was my fault for leaving my bag on the floor! We’ve been friends for nearly 20 years, so it’s a little complicated, but

a person may be able to change their personality traits, including their level of conscientiousness. Their research suggests that a person can become more conscientious by continually setting very specific weekly goals — for example, tasks to follow through on that they’d normally let slide.

The problem is this friend of yours might need some wakeup call to be motivated to change. People who get away with living sloppy typically see no reason to live otherwise.

Consider the difference in how driven

Unfortunately, without a lot of attractive options. Though it’s reasonable to prefer that she change her philosophy on dog training (which appears to be “Why bother?”) expecting her to do so is basically the love child of toxic hope and irrational expectations.

Tempting as it must be to simply demand she train her dog, as you’ve already seen, telling people what to do tends to backfire, leading them to tell you where to go.

What you can do is choose: Consider whether the benefits of having her in your life are worth the cost. If you decide to keep her around, be realistic: Leave any pricey rejuveceuticals and anything else of value locked in a kennel when visiting her and Cujodoodle.
