A two-part structural analysis was

completed in 2020, which rated the structure in “moderate condition” and revealed “corrosion of steel and concrete” in the southwest stairwell located closest to the pier. The structure was built in 1972.

The stairwell closure is a “proactive measure until repairs can be

done,” said Barbara McCormack, fleet and facilities manager for the city. The closure is being done in advance of the construction, “Out of an abundance of caution.”

She said the structural analysis “found other corrosion issues” in the parking structure and they are mov-

hristmas came a little early for No Limits for Deaf Children. On Tuesday, Dec. 14, Santa Claus made a special visit to the organization’s Oxnard location, bringing a $50,000 check in his sack. He had a helping hand from Dignity Health-St. John’s Regional Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital Camarillo, who provided the grant. The much-needed (and appreciated) funds will be used to offer essential auditory, speech, language and literacy programs to low-income, underserved deaf children.

Every year St. John’s hospitals provide grants to local nonprofit organizations whose efforts work towards building healthier communities. ing forward with the stairwell closure because “public safety is at the forefront of our decision making.”

The stairwell repair project requires two parts. First, an egress plan to ensure pedestrian safety as the stairwell is being closed in advance of the construction, and then second, the construction or repair phase on the stairwell.

When asked why the stairs were not closed now, she said the city is “waiting for the proposal from the contractor” regarding the details of the egress plan. There seems to be a delay related to the “supplies needed to close’’ the stairs. McCormack pointed out that the plan to close sections of the structure to the public during construction is typical for any project taking place in a structure accessible by the public.

McCormack could not confirm it, but said supply chain issues could “very well be” contributing to the delay in the city receiving a supplies list from the contractor, which is needed to implement the egress plan.

The egress plan is more than just blocking off the stairwell. The plan delineates “the safe path of travel of pedestrians outside of the vehicle lane” in the parking structure. McCormack said the preliminary egress plan includes closing parking levels 3, 4 and 5 to ensure pedestrian safety during the closure of the stairwell and repair work.

The egress plan has been approved by the city’s building and safety and fire departments.

is MTM Construction, Inc., headquartered in the City of Industry with an office in Ventura.

The parking structure “serves an important function” to the “beachfront area,” providing “parking for people frequenting the promenade and restaurants in that area,” said McCormack.

According to a city spokesperson, the parking structure is used at about 25% of capacity most of the time, although it does fill up during special events like the Ventura County Fair.

According to information from Michael Coon, director for the city’s Department of Finance and Technology, and Vivien Avella, assistant finance and technology director, the city has a principal balance owed on the structure of $4.56 million, with an annual cost of $470,000 for principal and interest. The structure was part of a recent refinancing package involving several properties that saved the city $1.68 million in overall interest payments for just the parking structure.

The two parts of the structural analysis were conducted in September 2019 and April 2020.

McCormack explained that the city also conducts “regular preventative maintenance” on the structure “annually,” which includes “looking at the structural system.”

The last maintenance work was done in 2011. She said regular annual inspections also take place.

The estimate to repair the stairwell is $250,000. The contractor for the construction phase has not been selected.

Rain in Ventura County brings opportunities and merits cautions

ast week’s rainstorms brought wonderful wetness to our dry climate. Because such storms have become so rare, a review of some opportunities and cautions related to rain may be in order:

fitting for insertion into a downspout. Brands offered at home improvement stores and garden stores, such as Green Thumb, generally cost around $100.

Smart irrigation controllers

Local water agencies offer free or discounted irrigation controllers capable of sensing the weather at your location and adjusting your programmed irrigation schedule. Last week, my controller — through a service — texted me, telling me it would skip watering because rain was expected. If you do not yet have a smart irrigation controller, call the phone number listed on your water bill and ask your water purveyor if they offer a discount. If you have an irrigation system with a battery backup instead of irrigation programs stored on the web, now is a good time to check your battery. Dead batteries can cause those systems to default to factory settings, watering too frequently, even when it is raining.

Redirecting rain downspouts to shallow vegetated areas slows, spreads and sinks water flows. Grade these areas to keep and infiltrate the water onsite.

Replace solid concrete and asphalt with gapped paving materials, or remove a strip down the middle of the driveway and fill it with gravel. This also allows water to soak into the ground for future use, rather than run off. Local water agencies use this strategy with projects like the United Water Conservation District’s Freeman Diversion and the Casitas Municipal Water District’s water spreading grounds operation north of Ojai. Pervious paving material at the Ventura County Government Center captures, treats and infiltrates stormwater runoff from a 39-acre parking lot.

Tire toys

Driving

According to Cary Svoboda, Vector Control Program Lead with the Ventura County Environmental Health Division, tire swings, tire sandboxes, tire obstacle courses and other reuses of tires can pose mosquito breeding dangers following rains. No matter how a stored tire is angled, if it is uncovered, it will collect water. Worse, when the rain is over, the tire’s curve shades collected water, preventing rapid evaporation, and the tire’s black rubber heats the water, making it even more attractive to mosquitoes. Puncturing tire walls for drainage is difficult and dangerous, so covering tires to prevent water collection is essential, if not always practical.

Rain barrels

Capturing rainwater and reusing barrels are great actions for both your garden and the environment, but combining the two ideas can be problematic. Reused barrels often do not have proper screening devices essential for the prevention of breeding mosquitoes.

If you plan to buy a rain barrel from an enterprising individual listing a home-made variety on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or another site, just be sure openings are protected. Svoboda recommends a 1/16inch mesh screen to keep out mosquitoes. Commercially produced rain barrels are usually better, with tight mesh screens on top or a solid top and a side hose

Redirecting rain

Visitors from wet climates make fun of how slow locals drive in the rain. “Haven’t you people ever seen this wet stuff fall from the sky before?!” they ask. Actually, local drivers are being smart. When rain is rare, oil and other slippery substances build up on the pavement.

Especially during the first rains of the season, these substances come loose, making driving conditions dangerous. Driving slowly is an important caution.

Keep the roads clean

You can also avoid slick roads during rare rains by keeping the roads free of contamination in the first place. If your vehicle leaks oil, get it fixed immediately.

If you wash your car at home, do it on a dirt surface, so the soapy, dirty water does not run off into the street.

Avoid using “spray on, rinse off” engine and wheel cleaners. Keep the lid down on trash cans so wind and birds don’t spread litter. Park off street on street sweeping days, which are usually the day after trash pick-up.

In Brief County rain totals Welcome storms brought rain and snow to much of California last week and are on tap for this week as well. Total rain falls were recorded by Ventura County Public Works.

As of the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 13, Lake Casitas was at 32.7% of capacity, with rain totals across the county for the Dec. 13-14 rain event ranging from six inches at a location in the Sespe Wilderness to just under one inch at locations in Oxnard.

Areas in the Santa Susana Mountains have logged 2.67 inches, 2.37 inches in Santa Paula, 1.23 inches in Ventura, 3.22 inches in Ojai, and 4.17 inches at the southwestern edge of Lake Casitas.

Statewide mask mandate The California Department of Public Health has issued a statewide mask mandate effective Wednesday, Dec. 15 through Jan. 15, 2021 that applies to indoor areas where the public has access. The mandate is aimed at counties that do not already have local mandates in place. Ventura County has an active mask mandate for these indoor areas already in place.

County confirms first Omicron case On Friday, Dec. 10, the Ventura County Public Health Department announced confirmation of the first person to test positive for the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus.

According to information released by the department, the person who tested positive for the Omicron variant is a fully vaccinated adult who is now self-isolating and as of Dec. 10 had symptoms that were “improving without medical care.”

People who had come in contact with them have all tested negative and none have symptoms. All of them, however, have been asked to adhere to quarantine protocol.

The department is encouraging those who are not yet vaccinated to get the shots available at various locations for free. Appointments are available online at www.myturn. ca.gov or by calling 833-422-4255.

People who are homebound and 12 years of age or older can receive the vaccine at no cost by calling the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging by calling 805-477-7300 or by emailing covidmobileclinic@ventura.org.

Age Well, Drive Smart The California Highway Patrol

offers an in-person and virtual traffic safety program for senior drivers to tune up driving skills and refresh rules on the road and any recent changes to driving laws. The intent of the program is to keep seniors driving safely longer.

Normal age-related physical changes and how those might impact driving will also be discussed.

Suspect pleads not guilty to tech thefts in Thousand Oaks On Dec. 9, Roderick Davis pleaded not guilty to burglary and theft charges after he was arrested in Pomona on Dec. 8 in connection with a slew of commercial burglaries in Thousand Oaks between Aug. 4 and Nov. 29, 2021.

According to a written statement by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, “thousands of dollars in Apple computers and photography equipment were stolen,” and investigators from the Thousand Oaks Investigations Bureau Career Criminals Unit worked with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department as well as police departments in Glendale and Laguna Beach to identify Davis as the suspect in the thefts. He is the suspect in dozens of burglaries between San Diego and Ventura counties.

Bail is set at $20,000. Davis remains in custody at the Ventura County jail.

150 affordable homes slated for Oxnard People’s Self-Help Housing (PSHH) has announced a project is moving forward to build 150 affordable homes for low-income families and farmworkers. To qualify for the housing, residents will be income qualified at or below 60% of the area’s median income.

The project is located on Cypress Road in South Oxnard on a 5.22acre parcel with existing buildings that will be demolished.

A spokesperson with PSHH said construction is slated to start in 2023, with move-in in 2025. The project is the first in the city of Oxnard to be approved as part of the SB35 streamlined approval process.

It received approval in February 2021.

The project includes a community center, learning center, laundry room, recreational areas and two playgrounds and includes infrastructure improvements.

The new housing project is designed to be Net Zero Ready, and could include an onsite greywater system.

Called Cypress Place at Garden City, the project was collaboratively funded with a pre-development loan of $850,000 from the Housing Trust Fund of Ventura County and $3.6 million loan from NeighborWorks Capital to purchase the parcel. www.pshhc.org.

But here is a story of a community, related by one of its cherished members. A person with a tremendous legacy, who grew up in the Colonia and Rose Park neighborhoods of Oxnard.

That person is Major League Baseball legend Terry Pendleton.

Pendleton has gained considerable fame as a ball player for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Atlanta Braves, with a long list of achievements attached to his name – including Most Valuable Player in the National League for the 1991 season (beating out Barry Bonds). Today he is on the coaching staff of the Atlanta Braves, helping to bring them to their championship win in the 2021 World Series. But in talking about his life, career and baseball, he emphasized the valuable role played by the “village” of families who were a part of his community; people who raised him and helped prepare him for the ups and downs of a career in major league sports.

“It truly takes a village to raise a child. I want to list that village,” he said, adding that these were people who “shaped me . . . who gave a word of encouragement, showed me when I did wrong and helped me correct it.”

“I could walk into these families’ homes at any time and be as welcome as if I was their child,” he recalled.

“When you start something, you finish it”

Pendleton moved to Oxnard from South Central Los Angeles when he was 9 years old, and started playing organized baseball when he was 10. His godfather, Wallace Anger, was his first baseball coach; Pendleton played with Anger’s sons Victor and Manuel.

At the time, he had no idea of his level of skill, or what he would later achieve. He just kept at it.

“I remember being that kid in right field. I couldn’t hit a lick. In my mind I was the worst kid in the entire league.

I was going home crying after every game because I was so bad at it.” But his parents were there to encourage him.

He’d say, “I’m not going back out there, I’m embarrassing you . . . myself, I’m not going to keep doing that.”

Pendleton credits his father with keeping him in the game.

“My dad [made it clear] that when you start something, you finish it. There would be no quitting. So you decide how you would do it.” That approach to challenges played a key part in Pendleton’s development as a player and later as a coach.

When baseball season ended and winter came, Pendleton shifted away from football (the other sport he loved) to devote all his time to baseball.

“Victor Anger and I . . . would go to Rose Avenue Elementary every day after school, and during the Christmas holiday. We played a game called Strike Out.” They would draw a box on the handball wall at the pitching strike zone. “We pitched to each other the entire

winter.” He remembers using soda cans to mark the distances of their hits, either a single, double, triple or a home run. “So we’d know what kind of hit we got.”

The winter of Strike Out paid off. “Next year, I was the all-star shortstop. The Anger family pushed me big time, to be a better baseball player, a better person . . . along with the Colonia and Rose Avenue neighborhood.”

He continued to play baseball through high school, but his focus had started to shift to basketball. Then, in his senior year at Channel Islands High School, he took home a slew of awards in baseball.

“I went to the Southern California Championships with [Channel Islands High School],” was named Most Valuable Player in the county league and made All State.

“I was like, ‘What?’ Until I won all those accolades, I thought I was better at basketball. But still no colleges were after me to play anywhere. Not even small colleges.

No scouts to sign me out of high school. I didn’t know how to measure myself and my ability.”

Flight of the Condors

Something special happened during Pendlton’s senior year. There were four or five players in Oxnard that didn’t get any college scholarship offers. Names like John Larson, Jerry Willard and others who played for Hueneme High. Jerry White, the baseball coach from Moorpark College, left to start a new team at Oxnard College.

“We all decided to play for him that summer and go

And he picked up a few [players] from Camarillo, a couple at Ventura [College].” He also recruited a few Moorpark College players to the Oxnard team (called the Condors).

That was 1979 and for a first-year team, the Condors made an impact in the league.

“We won our division and won our league.

We went to the Southern California Championships. We lost, but did very well; very, very well for a first-year team. They didn’t expect us to come out and do what we did in year number one.”

“I played on and off” that year, Pendleton noted. “I became a starter later when kids got hurt. I was a second year starter. Still, there were not a lot of scholarships.” After his sophomore year, the University of Arkansas and University of California, San Diego, showed some interest. “UCLA kinda promised me . . .

But nothing ever came.”

“At the last minute,” an offer came from Fresno State University (FSU). Pendleton spent his junior year at Fresno State on a

partial scholarship.

Riding out the ups and downs

“Division one was a learning experience,” he remembered. “I had temporary setbacks,” as he called them.

At FSU, Pendleton was benched or didn’t make the travel squad. “They left me back at school, I don’t know why. Those were temporary setbacks. I finally got the opportunity to play, then got benched [again].”

He had just 40 at bats that entire year. His partial scholarship was “taken away,” and to this day he doesn’t know why he didn’t play more that year. But looking back, he acknowledged that “it made me a better young man,” paying his “own way” by working at the unemployment office.

Pendleton continued to play, however.

While he’d been an infielder, he ended up playing right field during his senior year. And that’s when his fortunes changed. Pendelton set a school record of 98 hits and was recognized as an All-American player that year.

Success in Fresno led to opportunities in

the Big Leagues: Pendleton was drafted in 1982 by the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh round.

“They didn’t care if you’re No. 1 or No. 53. We were all treated the same. You worked your rear end off to achieve . . . and get to the next level.”

It wasn’t all smooth sailing. In 1983 he fractured his right wrist – twice. The first happened when he was hit with a fast ball while at bat. The second time was on his 23rd birthday. “I only played six weeks, sat out the remainder [of the year].”

But Pendleton didn’t give up. He showed up for spring training in the minor leagues the following year, where he “worked my rear end off,” and made it to the AAA baseball club level with St. Louis. “I played well . . . batted 300 in AAA.” A couple of days after his 24th birthday, “I got a call . . . ‘You’re going to the show.’”

That’s what players were told when they were being bumped up to the major leagues. He’d be playing third baseman with the Cardinals.

“I remember calling home, telling my

mom I’m going to the big league.” Then he called his fiance, “my wife to this day, Cathy Marquez.” They all said “yah right.” They thought he was playing a joke on them; he told them to pick up the paper the next day and look for his name.

“Whitey Herzog played me the next day.”

Pendleton got a hit his first time at bat, and hit three for five that night. “It was a pretty good first night.”

Star of the show

That was the beginning of a 15-year career in the MLB as a player, which included six appearances at the World Series. After the Cardinals, he moved to the Atlanta Braves . . . where he once again rode out a series of ups and downs that come with the sport. His persistence paid off: In 1991 he was named MVP in the National League.

Even then, as a now-famous ball player, Pendleton never forgot his roots. Throughout his MVP season, he often wore an Oxnard College Condors shirt under his Braves jersey to serve as a reminder of where he came from.

Terry Pendleton provided a list of individuals and families from the Colonia-Rose Park neighborhoods in Oxnard whose homes he could “walk into at any time and be as welcome as if I was their child.”

Some of those families have since passed away, “but their kids are alive. I want to make sure they get it, that I greatly appreciate them.”

He calls many “big brothers” and added, “For any that I may have forgotten please, please forgive me.”

Photo submitted MVP is just one of Pendleton’s many career highlights, which include three Gold Gloves (’87, ’89, ’92), MLB Comeback Player of the Year Award (’91), Silver Bat Award (’91), 140 career home runs and an appearance in MLB’s All-Star game (’92). His World Series appearances span from the 1980s to 2021.

Over the years, Pendleton has supported Oxnard College’s baseball program by donating time, money, equipment and even memorabilia. He was inducted into the California Community College Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2016; the award is permanently displayed on the Condors’ outfield wall. This year Pendleton has been recognized as a California Community College Distinguished Alumni by the Community College League of California (CCLC), a statewide organization that advocates for California community colleges at the state and federal levels.

Big brothers

Many young athletes look up to players who have come before. Pendleton’s hero was closer to home.

“Every young man mocks or watched their dad to see how he should grow up. My dad was my hero. He instilled the work ethic: You work your butt off, whether it’s in baseball or pulling weeds. You pull those weeds with the best possible effort you can give.”

“I had a lot of people in the Colonia-Rose Park area who I looked up to,” he continued.

“I have a list of names, I have to put them all in there.” He lists people older than him, those who played basketball, football. “The way they carried themselves . . . they always gave me something to continue to strive for, they were all like big brothers to me.”

Coming to Oxnard from South Central Los Angeles, Pendleton had a different perspective on the Colonia neighborhood than many.

“There was nothing really tough about Oxnard, other than mom and dad trying to make a living, putting food on the table and clothes on our backs,” he said. “We had areas to go play, people you knew were good and bad. I learned I had big brothers there to take care of me, to teach me right and wrong, to tell me whether I was right or wrong.” That 12 — — December 23, 2021

village helped ensure “I was going in the right direction at whatever I choose to do.”

Throughout his athletic career, Pendleton said that the “toughest thing, I was battling every day . . . I was never the biggest guy on the court. I always had to try and prove myself. I was one of the smallest kids around.”

Pendleton’s other great love was football, which he started in Pop Warner. His final year in football was his high school senior year, which turned out to be a good thing . . . for more reasons than one. “I got concussions on the practice field. Nobody knew it but me.”

The mental game

Thinking over the course of a career in the highest levels of his sport, Pendleton recognizes the ongoing toll on the body and the stamina needed to persevere through the “physical grind.” But the former MLBer insisted that the key to success lies in a very different kind of strength.

“The mental aspect of it is the tougher part, it truly is . . . Everyone thinks it’s all about the physicality, you gotta be big and strong.” Pendleton acknowledged that physical strength is important, but to be able to mentally and emotionally “take the grinding every day . . .16 games every week, playing and getting hurt, the wear and tear and pounding on your knees. Anybody who’s played professionally knows.”

Players had to develop a mindset that would see them through the “ups and downs” of playing, of the grind, day in and day out. Even when you’re playing a sport you love, the physical toll and mental pressure to do well, to come back after setbacks or a bad day, is challenging. Pendleton credits a strong mental mindset that turns those negative events into learning experiences with getting him through the ups and downs of playing professional baseball.

In his view, “Today the mental part is getting more and more fundamental.” Players have to be “smart now, too,” noting that the sport, the media and the pressure “test you at all levels,” and require the “mental capacity to hold on and fight.”

A major part of his work today, as a

coach, is mentoring young players not only in building their skills on the field, but also in their minds.

This year, the team he’s coaching, the Atlanta Braves, won the World Series. “It was rewarding to sit back and watch . . . The first baseman, second baseman, short stop . . . to watch those kids grow up . . . I mostly just stay out of their way, jump in when called upon . . . I’ve seen them grow up, from kids to young men to men on the baseball field.” With the win and ongoing success he sees those players “reaping the benefits now of all the hard work and labor they put into the game.”

Players work to progress and continually improve. Even in the major leagues it’s expected that new players might be out of their depth and comfort zone. His approach to coaching is about coming in when a player isn’t progressing anymore. And sometimes the pressure of the game brings out the skill that has been in development in practice.

As for the future of the team, he said, “This team has not even started playing yet. They are much better than they’re showing.”

Currently Pendleton is the special assistant to baseball operations for the Atlanta Braves.

That means he mostly “bounces around the minor league,” working with new draft picks.

“I love my job right now. I get to put on different hats at different times. I don’t have to be at the majors. If a kid is struggling, I go see them to get them on track. It is really rewarding for me. I get to be home for birthdays. When you’re with the major league you go on that schedule and that’s it.”

When asked if he plays at all now, he laughed. “No, ma’am.” During the Braves’ Fantasy Camp in 2017, “I was at third base.

Two balls were hit really hard at me. I caught them. But I really realized how old I am.”

Without any regret he explained that today he knows “what my limitations are. I know how my body feels with arthritic knees. I just want to enjoy life, without all the unnecessary pounding on joints and muscles.”

He’s able to get his baseball fix through

coaching, work that brings him satisfaction, knowing he is helping young players and giving back to the sport.

“Knowing the kids that wanna be sponges, soak up all the knowledge. That’s where I get my thrill. We work on something, and it comes out in the game, [the player] comes back with a big grin on his face . . . I get joy, basically, from giving back.”

“Every day you show up”

Pendleton says it’s been a while since he visited his old stomping ground in Oxnard.

He and his wife have family in the area and “we try to get back every year, sometimes twice a year. But life moves on, you can’t get it to stand still.”

When asked about whether he has any thoughts to share with aspiring athletes in Oxnard today, he said, “Listen, as I tell the big leaguers . . . every day you show up. In the classroom, on the court there are two choices you can truly control. No matter what anybody else says, every day, at home, out with buddies, on a practice field, your hustle and your attitude. You can control those two things.”

When a coach or parent gets mad you can decide to “brush it off and keep going . . . walk out with a positive attitude.”

He also offered a word for parents. “If you can afford it, please allow kids to play whatever they choose to.” He gives an example of a young, skilled player who has only played baseball since he was 5. “It’s like a job already to him . . . just going through the motions. The whole deal could be that the kid is the greatest wide receiver to never play football because you never gave him the opportunity to do so.”

He lamented the cost of playing sports today, making it hard for working families.

“Kids are looking for fun. Every game is not win, win, win,” it’s about improving skills. “Yes, winning is part of growth, but so is losing. I lost an awful lot of baseball games.

That’s part of growth. Losing can make you work harder to get winning.”

Realities alternate and actual The Otherworld and Carl Dobsky at CLU

S

tep into The Otherworld at the William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art at California Lutheran University, “an exhibit of visionary paintings by artists who imagine the world as another place where alternatives to everyday reality are made manifest, and landscapes, animals, and people are transformed.”

On view through Feb. 3, the exhibit features an array of paintings that represent some of the best examples of the psychedelic art movement, including the iconic “Relayer” by Roger Dean, Rick Griffin’s famous “flying eyeball” Jimi Hendrix concert poster, and works by Alex Grey and Mars-1.

The Otherworld is the brainchild of artist and CLU professor Michael Pearce, who guest-curated the exhibit. “It started to germinate in my head two years ago,” Pearce explains, adding that “psychedelic

art is making a big comeback. It captures the Zeitgeist of the time . . . and like all great art, it is telling us our own story.”

Pearce is quick to note that the exhibit is not about LSD, nor does it endorse illicit drug use. “It’s about the visionary state, which can exist in many forms,” not just chemical. Pearce also adds that psychedelic imagery has been around since ancient times, long before the 1960s brought it to the forefront. Yet it is largely missing from art history. If The Otherworld is any indication, that is about to change.

“The art is so strong. You can’t ignore it,” Pearce exclaims.

The rest of the exhibit is just as powerful. A particular standout is “Bicycle Day,” a collaboration by Mars-1, an up-and-coming artist based in San Francisco, and Alex Grey, whose paintings are now fetching upwards of $250,000 at auction.

t’s been a particularly prolific year for holiday albums — so much so that I’ll stop the introduction here to save space and just get right to reviewing the albums themselves.

Clarkson’s second holiday album opens with a real show stopper — “Merry Christmas Baby” (one of seven Clarkson co-writes on the album, not the familiar R&B standard) that disguises some thorny emotions within a richly soulful melody that shows why Clarkson’s singing wowed judges all those years ago on American Idol.

The song signals that When Christmas Comes Around… is anything but the typical holiday album. Clarkson has quipped that it’s a breakup holiday album (she, of course, recently went through a highly publicized divorce), and that describes songs like light-hearted “Christmas Isn’t Canceled (Just You)” or the more serious big ballad “Merry Christmas (To The One I Used To Know)” — two of the other strong originals on the album. But Clarkson also includes some familiar upbeat material, such as “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” “Santa Baby” and “Jingle Bell Rock.” Whatever the songs, they often come with full orchestration and plenty of studio polish, yet don’t sound overproduced. Now with two stellar holiday albums to her credit, fans will be ready whenever another Clarkson Christmas album comes around again.

Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley put their stamp on the holidays with their distinctive blend of country, rock, soul and even a little gospel. Ten of the 13 songs on Hell of a Holiday are originals, which in itself gives the album its own musical character. And of course, the Pistol Annies bring the sass and humor that has helped define their three excellent non-holiday albums, but there’s also tenderness and emotional depth on songs like “The Only Thing I Wanted” and “Believing.”

Originals like “I Wanna Know” and “Long As I Got You” are standouts, but James also absolutely transforms “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “O Holy Night” and other standards into her signature sound that’s bluesy and soulful with some jazzy swing. And oh yes, she sings the hell out of these songs. This is my pick for best 2021 Christmas album.

I Dream of Christmas

Jones’ first holiday foray is the relaxed effort one would expect. But that doesn’t mean it’s boring. On “White Christmas,” for instance, her sprightly piano parts put some fizz into the song. And while Jones slows the already ambling tempo of “Christmas Don’t Be Late” (yes, the song

by Alvin and the Chipmunks), she gives the song some punch with some rather bold horn parts. In addition to such familiar tunes, I Dream of Christmas features five originals, and they provide some highlights on this winter warmer of a holiday album.

The year’s most ambitious holiday album belongs to the accomplished songwriter Paul Kelly, who assembled 22 songs from across centuries and countries, some familiar, some obscure, to create a holiday album that’s charming, reverential to irreverent, very diverse and entertaining.

Love brings his unique mix of blues, rap, soul and rock to 10 original holiday songs that set a rootsy, good-time mood on this refreshing holiday album.

Perry’s voice sounds a bit grainier on The Season than it did during his days fronting Journey, as he croons eight Christmas classics. But it’s the added backing vocals on “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” the Motown-ish treatment of “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” and the playful reworking of “Silver Bells” that elevate this album.

With these jazzy piano-based arrangements, Edmonson brings plenty of swing and pep to this collection of holiday standards like “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem,” “Let It Snow!

Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” and “Jingle Bell Rock.” That said, her mousy vocal tune may not be for everyone.

Bath & Beyond) was able to seat us right away. We cozied Signature: __________________________ up in a roomy booth and set our sights on breakfast.

A few things surprised me right off the bat. Despite a fairly nondescript entrance, the space is pretty big! And even though it wasn’t yet 9 a.m., the place was already abuzz. It has a classic American diner feel: vinyl booths, 12/20/21 9:53trays AM tables, waitstaff balancing large of biscuits, eggs and waffles while they bustle from customer to customer. Comfortable and unpretentious.

The same could be said of the menu. All the standards with lots of options to enjoy them: traditional French toast plus macadamia nut and cinnamon role versions; multigrain, blueberry, banana or strawberry pancakes; oodles of omelettes and scrambles; a handful of Mexican breakfast favorites (burritos, chile verde, huevos rancheros). Lots of things to whet the appetite for sure!

(Lunch is available as well, with a wide array of sandwiches, burgers and salads.)

The not-so-common specialty of the house: the Swedish pancakes, which were the first thing we ordered with our coffee and hot chocolate. A plate with three large crepes quickly arrived for us to share, and they were just as delicious as they sounded on the menu. Delicate as flannel, lightly sweet and buttery, served with berry preserves. I don’t regret ordering them, but word to the

wise: A single small Swedish pancake is included with every breakfast dish, so you don’t need to place a separate order to enjoy them.

For breakfast proper, we had two sweet and two savory orders — and despite one small hiccup with a delayed order, everything came out quickly, served by unfailingly friendly staff.

For Kid the First: a Belgian waffle with strawberries.

Big and fluffy, beautifully decorated with fresh fruit and a generous amount of cream; very tasty. The cinnamon role French toast (ordered by his brother) was impressive: thick slices of cinnamon role battered and fried to a lovely golden brown and topped with scoops of whipped butter and a dusting of powdered sugar. Good flavor, but awfully sweet (go figure) — the traditional version might be preferable.

My husband and I both ordered chile verde breakfasts — his as an omelette, mine as huevos rancheros. Both were fantastic. The chile verde had a very fresh, somewhat citrusy taste, with hunks of tomatillo in the sauce.

The pork was simmered to tender perfection, creating a rich gravy that was as wonderful with my poached eggs as it was folded into an omelette. A delicious, hardy dish that will stick to your ribs and get your day off to a great start. Save room for the fantastic O’Brien potatoes with plenty of fresh bell peppers and onions — or go for the crispy hash browns, which need some seasoning but are otherwise very good. The biscuits are respectable as well.

Despite the fairly large portions, we left nothing unconsumed. Maybe we were exceptionally hungry. Or maybe we just couldn’t get enough of the exceptionally good things Eggs ’n’ Things was serving up.

I spent an entire Sunday with a really cute guy I met through a dating app. We kissed a bit, and I stayed over at his place (though I said no sex). Things felt weird Monday morning, so I texted to see whether we were still on for dinner. He asked to push it to Tuesday, but I had a conflict and asked whether the weekend would work. He never responded.

That weekend, I saw him out with guy friends, but he basically ignored me. I got him alone and asked him to go home with me. He declined.

“Just for tonight or forever?” I asked.

He said, “Just tonight.” That was the

last I heard from him, and I’m going crazy trying to figure this out.

—No Closure If you really, really need closure, date a door.

It’s normal to want closure: defined by psychologist Arie Kruglanski as “an answer on a given topic, any answer.” We’re deeply disturbed by “confusion and ambiguity” — a cloudy mess of unanswered questions — and we feel driven (and even desperate) to replace it with a solid brick wall of facts.

A practical (though admittedly cuckoo-sounding) solution might be trying to fire up a quirk of the mind psychologist Elizabeth Loftus calls the “imagination inflation effect”: our tendency to convert events we imagine and then repeatedly recall into “false memories” we come to believe are the real deal.

These invented memories tend to be “stickier” when they include rich detail, like the guy — reeking of BO! — hanging his head and confessing he weenied out of admitting it was “goodbye forever.” Don’t forget to script his explanation — ideally something torment-avenging and wounded ego-soothing. My suggestion: Despite your radiant beauty and extreme awesomeness, he’ll need approximately

65.3 years of therapy before he’ll be ready for a relationship.

If, after giving this tactic a good repetitive try, your mental hellscape hasn’t faded substantially, there’s an alternative approach: accepting there are things we just can’t know and shifting out of the “WHYWHYWHY?!” by, say, reciting the alphabet backward or shifting into pre-planned healthy replacement thoughts.

The unfortunate reality: Closure should be considered a self-service item, as you can’t control what others say or do — though you could make serious headway by kidnapping and torturing them till they talk. Of course, I’m not advising this — though, to be fair, it can lead to some major benefits: both in the form of answers and in being rewarded for your troubles with an all-expense-paid cozy new home... uh, in SuperMax.

I read your response to “Conflicted” (the woman dating a guy so needy he wanted her to ditch all her friends and spend every minute with him). I suggest you tell her it’ll never work out and she should date someone else.

Telling people what to do is necessary in certain situations, like when it’s a more successful battle strategy than “You do you!”: dispatching the troops to engage in the military version of interpretive dance.

However, in general, direct advice — “Do this!” or “Do that!”

— tends to backfire big-time, revving up a state psychologist Jack Brehm calls “psychological reactance.” “Reactance” describes our fear-driven freakout — our reaction — when we perceive a threat to our freedom to do as we choose.

We go on the defensive — rebel against being controlled— typically by doing whatever we were doing... only longer, stronger, and louder.

Understanding this is why I’m an advice columnist who specializes in NOT giving advice. I use hedgy-wedgy language like “you might” and “you could” that leaves big wide-open spaces for personal choice. Accordingly, instead of telling this woman, “Dump Mr. Needypants pronto!” I offered reasons the two MIGHT be a bad match.

I also identified potential stumbling blocks — like being a “My needs last!” habitual “pleaser” — and suggested practical steps she could take to kick them out of the way.

My ultimate goal is helping people help themselves: giving them the psychological and behavioral chops they need to render me unnecessary!

I typically retell the story they’ve told me in ways I hope will help them gain perspective — that is, understand what they’re going through and why. I then lay out a set of tools — ways they might tweak their thinking and behavior — in hopes of empowering them to dig themselves out.

Basically, my column is the advice version of that well-worn fish saying — uh, as I like to rewrite it: Give a woman a fish and she’ll have dinner.
