Purple is the New Party

President meme

A

recent trend in President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign has come to light, that is both beyond ridiculous yet also effective in maintaining the circus that is his reign. In the past few weeks, Trump has put his head onto three different people, two of them movie characters (Rocky Balboa and Thanos from the Avengers films) and one of the recent Time Magazine Person of the Year, Greta Thunberg. What makes these “meme” posts so fascinating, like a multicar crash pile up, is that they appear to be random, out-of-nowhere conceptual ideas, yet they seemingly fit in with Trump’s re-election strategy. Make the whole process a joke, and the one crying for seriousness will look like Chicken Little.

When I was a high school teacher, I would see slackers and bullies try to devalue the educational process by making jokes to hide their insecurities about their lack of understanding of the material being introduced, reviewed or examined. The theory is, if they downplay the seriousness of the objectives, they can get other people in class to not take it seriously, and then anyone who cares to work hard will be seen as a nerd or teacher’s pet.

By putting his head on iconic people, Trump is letting the Democratic Party know he doesn’t take their impeachment or primaries seriously, which fuels his base with “fake news” fever and makes independents feel the whole political process is a joke without a

punchline worth listening to.

Trump’s Rocky meme, his head on a chiseled, bare-chested Sylvester Stallone image from Rocky III, plays up the hero image Trump has seen himself as. The caption-free tweet went viral, with the Internet buzzing that the irony is that Rocky was against the Russians, not bowing to them. Yet, the silliness of the meme took the attention off impeachment hearings. If the DNC is the tortoise, then Trump is the obnoxious hare. While slow and steady won the race in that old fable, the outcome here isn’t as sure.

James Starlin told CNN he was “shocked” and “saddened.”

“I am old enough where I remember our presidents — when they spoke to the public — they did so to encourage, to inspire, to lead, not to complain like some teenage girl who’s had a bad day. And that’s what I see so much going on with this particular administration.”

The sexist remark aside, by drawing in the artists, Trump maintains the narrative, keeps his opponents mad, and keeps focus off the serious issues trailing him.

Yet the weirdest posting is an edited image of President Trump’s head on 16-year-old climate activist and Time’s Person of the Year, Greta Thunberg.

“There’s only one Person of The Year,” the campaign wrote with the changed picture.

Not only is Trump mocking a teenager, he is also mocking the media that continues to ignore him as a person of stature. By photoshopping his head on a teenage girl’s body, he is attempting to devalue the honor he so desires. He even went as far as to mock her social skills, tweeting out that she needs to find friends.

“So ridiculous. Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!”

With impeachment hearings not going his way and nearly every DNC candidate beating him in the polls, Trump has returned to the one “go-to” tactic that has won him success: mockery. He might be upset he’s not Person of the Year, but he’s certainly Troll of the Decade. ♦

The absurdity of Trump embodying the Thanos character is more confusing than anything else. Using a clip from the last Marvel Avenger: Endgame film, Trump’s face is seen smirking as he snaps his finger, wiping out Nancy Pelosi and other democrats, claiming Trump’s re-election is “inevitable.” The irony, of course, is that the clip he used was the moment of Thanos being defeated by the heroes. While one could argue the campaign engineers behind the video meme were ignorant to that fact, I suggest they wanted the fanboys to lose their minds, which did happen.

Twitter went crazy, and even one of the artists behind the creation of Thanos spoke out.

As for gifts, giving an experience can be better than giving a tangible item. For example, you could treat a loved one to dinner, followed by a seasonal concert. Local orchestras, jazz bands, and most performers charge admission, but performances by choruses and church choirs are sometimes free.

Buying someone a museum membership is another great, waste-free gift. A membership to the Museum of Ventura County, in Ventura, also supports and provides admission to the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula. Memberships start at $40 for students and seniors and are $60 for individuals and families.

Another alternative to traditional gifts is to give a certificate for a service, rather than a product. Gifts of this type can range from massages to movie tickets. Another environmentally beneficial gift is to hire a housecleaning service for a friend, especially if you hire one of the housekeeping services specializing in using nontoxic cleaners.

oth Christmas and Hanukkah begin next week, and those who have not yet bought gifts for everyone on their list may be tempted to wade into holiday shopping crowds and buy items they would not have purchased if they had more time to consider what recipients want.

As stated in often-quoted statistics on the website of the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle), “Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, more than one million tons of additional waste is generated each week nationwide.” As an example, 38,000 miles of ribbon alone is thrown out each year — enough “to tie a bow around the Earth.”

Instead, with a little knowledge and effort, it is possible to reduce waste, save resources, and prevent “the Grinch who stole landfill space” from marring your festivities.

For example, as an alternative to the 2.6 billion holiday cards CalRecycle estimates are sold each year in the U.S. (“enough to fill a football field 10 stories high”), CalRecycle suggests electronic holiday greeting cards. They do not mean the type of electronic greeting cards operated with batteries, making cute noises when

to Grandma, consider locally produced foods and wares. For example, you could bring her a selection of items from your local farmers’ market — winter fruits like avocados, tangerines and persimmons intermingled with olive oil, walnuts, walnut oil, garlic spread, homemade bread and honey or bee products, all in a reusable bag.

Some gifts actively promote environmental benefit, such as a bicycle, compost bin, rain barrel, LED light bulbs or reusable containers (water bottles, coffee cups, cloth napkins, and cloth sandwich bags, for example). A “partridge in a pear tree” might be impractical, but a fruit tree by itself, or an herb or vegetable plant, can make a great gift.

Holiday gatherings are also an occasion to consider waste reduction. If you are having a group of friends and relatives over for a party, it is tempting to use disposable dishware and cutlery to serve them. But, with a few guests helping in the kitchen, is it that much more work to use real dishes? If you don’t have enough plates, borrow some, or buy some from a thrift store and use them again at your next party. Decorations for the party can also be durable and reusable instead of disposable.

City of Ojai selects new police chief

Capt. Rivera Captain Jose Rivera, a resident of Camarillo, has been selected to replace Commander James Fryhoff who has been promoted and will be transferring to the City of Thousand Oaks. Rivera has been with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department for nine years and will begin his new post in Ojai on Jan. 12, 2020.

Suspect search leads to school lockdown On the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 10, Mound Elementary and Balboa Middle Schools in Ventura were put under lockdown for 45 minutes with children in classrooms due to a search underway in the nearby neighborhood.

Police were searching for Daniel Vargas, 18, wanted in connection to a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend.

When police located Vargas, he threatened officers with a knife and refused to put down the weapon.

A Taser gun was used but did not subdue him, leading to the release of police K-9 Bolt, which eventually resulted in Vargas being subdued by police. He was transported to the hospital and when medically cleared was arrested for attempted murder, felony domestic violence, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and felony resisting arrest.

Hit and run leads to life in prison Oxnard resident Juan De Dios Gallegos III has been sentenced to 36 years to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of second degree murder for the death of Michael James Holley in May of this year.

Blood, surveillance video and witness testimony confirmed that Gallegos used his truck to intentionally hit Holley while he was on foot. The jury determined that Gallegos used his truck as a deadly weapon.

Advisors needed for Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Applications are currently being accepted for six positons on the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council, which advises the sanctuary manager on various aspects related to the waters surrounding the Channel Islands.

Member of the public representing the following stakeholder groups are encouraged to apply: conservation, tourism, education, Chumash community, recreational fishing and public at-large.

The application deadline is Jan. 31. The position is on a volunteer basis and terms are for two years.

Runoff recharging Piru Groundwater Basin The Piru Stormwater Capture for Groundwater Recharge Project is complete and has already begun to capture runoff from the urban areas of the Piru community, treating and then diverting the water for groundwater basin recharge. The project is expected to divert 17 acre feet to the Piru Spreading Grounds in order to recharge the Piru Groundwater Basin.

Prior to the project, stormwater and other urban runoff entered Piru Creek directly, negatively impacting water quality in the creek, which is subject to federal Clean Water Act regulations enforced by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board.

The project was funded through the State Proposition 1 Storm Water Grant Program.

According to Ewelina Mutkowska, stormwater program manager with the Ventura County Public Works Agency Watershed Protection District, the project creates a “sustainable source for groundwater recharge, and we need to look for more similar opportunities to enhance our water supply sources countywide.”

Federal leasing plan and state initiatives explained

County lands could be impacted by new oil lease sales

O

n Dec. 12, the federal government formally reversed a six-year moratorium on new leasing of federally owned mineral rights in California, including large areas of land on the Central Coast. Ventura County is the third largest oil producing county in the state.

Areas in Ventura County impacted by the new plan include parcels between Fillmore and Piru, 136 acres between Lake Casitas and Highway 101 and 240 acres between Ventura and Cañada Larga. Also included are approximately 1,500 acres next to Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge and various parcels in the Ojai Valley, including a parcel owned by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy and Thacher School. A small area within Point Mugu State Park and the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is part of the plan along with the three properties of Naval Base Ventura County — the Port of Hueneme, Pt. Mugu Naval Base and all of San Nicholas Island — and parcels in the Cuyama Valley near Frazier Mountain.

In late October, the Resource Management Plan for those mineral rights was released by the Bureau of Land Management. The report found that new drilling and other processes such as hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” would not have any significant environmental or health impacts. Environmental groups have expressed their opposition to those findings.

“The BLM was charged with assessing those impacts and the plan’s contribution to climate change,” said Jeff Kuyper, executive director of Los Padres ForestWatch (LPFW). “The BLM squandered an opportunity to incorporate science and public input into this controversial plan, and it’ll likely end up in court again as a result.”

According to a statement released by LPFW, the BLM has not responded to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the thousands of public comments submitted.

The BLM website states that half of all proceeds collected from mineral rights leasing is paid back to the states from the federal government. According to BLM online records, there are no pending lease nominations for the area.

Local oil companies react to state initiatives Last month Gov. Gavin Newsom released a statement about new state initiatives that temporarily ban approvals of new drilling that will use high-pressure cyclic steam injection, pending review on the impacts of the process. The governor’s initiatives include protections for communities close to oil field operations, an audit of permits for hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and thirdparty review of fracking by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

“These are necessary steps to strengthen oversight of oil and gas extraction as we phase out our dependence on fossil fuels and focus on clean energy sources,” said Newsom in a statement released through the California Department of Conservation, the agency responsible for oil industry oversight in the state. “This transition cannot happen overnight; it must advance in a deliberate way to protect people, our environment and our economy.”

“Any real discussion about our state’s energy future must include California’s oil and gas industry,” said Catherine Reheis-Boyd, president of the Western States

Petroleum Association (WSPA), a lobbying agency for the industry.

Newsom’s new initiatives come in the wake of a major oil leak in Kern County, as reported by the Desert Sun, where a Chevron operation involving steam injection led to 1.3 million gallons of oil flowing into a canyon in the oil field, resulting in a multimillion dollar fine.

Recently the Ventura County Board of Supervisors approved a local moratorium on cyclic steam injection in a tar sands area of the Oxnard Plain pending the completion of a study being conducted by the United States Geologic Survey. That type of injection is not designed to break any formations, but rather soak in the ground and make the tar sands more liquefied and easier to extract. Initial USGS data showed gases that may be related to oil and gas extraction in groundwater aquifers used for irrigation. Final results, including confirmation of the source of the gas and whether a pathway to the surface exists from oil wells or natural oil formations, are expected early next year.

“CRC opposes irresponsible activist proposals that would increase Californians’ dependence on energy imported from the Middle East,” said Amy Fonzo, spokeswoman with California Resources Corporation (CRC), commenting on the new initiatives. CRC operates several oil fields in Ventura County and is a spinoff company of Occidental Petroleum.

Michelle Newell, spokeswoman with AERA energy, said there will be “no significant impact” because the company does not use the type of high-pressure cyclic steaming in Ventura and has “not done any hydraulic fracturing here for more than five years.” AERA is owned by Shell Oil Company and ExxonMobil.

California is making other changes in the state oil regulatory office including a name and mission change.

Previously called the Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources or DOGGR, with a dual mandate to protect natural resources and manage the “responsible” extraction of oil and gas, as of Jan. 1, 2020, the office will be called California Geologic Energy Management Division or CalGEM, with a revised mission that includes protecting public health and safety, environmental quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“This week’s actions by the governor and his newly overhauled CalGEM at the Resources Agency will help rebuild trust with communities living on the front lines of oil and gas extraction,” said State Senator Henry Stern, who is planning a hearing in January to review the changes being made to the state oil regulatory office.

“We are a global leader in clean energy but we are also the third-largest consumer of petroleum in the world.

If we are going to rationalize these two realities, it is precisely this kind of cautious, evidence-based decisionmaking we need.”

Fonzo said CRC does not expect the governor’s recent action “to have a significant effect on . . . production, plans or reserves. CRC is not dependent on any single field, drive mechanism or completion method.” Fonzo, responding via email to the VCReporter, said the oil fields where CRC conducts “steamfloods . . . do not require high-pressure cyclic steam injection,” which is the process referenced by Newsom’s Nov. 19 initiatives.

Fonzo also pointed to the small number of wells that require “well stimulation” such as fracking. “Over the past several years, less than 10 percent of CRC’s wells were completed using well stimulation” statewide and she said the company is currently operating eight rigs that are drilling new wells, “none of which will require well stimulation.” ♦

AQUATIC Therapy Vets find solace and support underwater with WAVES

n Monday, Nov. 18, eight passengers boarded a boat for a fourday excursion to Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands. That in and of itself was unremarkable — thousands of snorkelers, scuba divers, kayakers and other outdoor enthusiasts visit Channel Islands National Park (CINP) every year to see this special collection of islands, its sea caves and dense kelp forests teeming with oceanic wildlife. But this was not your typical group of tourists.

Aboard the Sea Ranger that week were an archaeologist, a submerged resource expert, a dive officer, a boat captain, a dive instructor and three U.S. military veterans — all women.

“We were eight women of various backgrounds and levels of diving and boating experience,” explains Kelly Moore, CINP dive officer.

The group was taking part in a joint project between the National Park Service and WAVES, a Temecula-based nonprofit organization that aims to heal veterans through scuba diving.

“A WONDERFUL WAY TO FIND PEACE”

WAVES stands for Wounded American Veterans Experience SCUBA diving, and it looks to the “unique properties of the aquatic environment” to offer a combination of adventure, camaraderie and rehabilitation to military service members who have experienced service-related trauma. Those that WAVES has helped include amputees, individuals with spinal cord and brain injuries and people suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

What benefits does scuba diving offer these individuals?

According to the WAVES website, water is a therapeutic environment, offering weightlessness and “limited audio input . . . Underwater, there is the soothing sound of breathing through your regulators as your bubbles float effortlessly to the surface. Movements are slower, gravity is sapped of its strength and muscles move more freely.” Where other physical activities may be too taxing or downright dangerous for an injured body, scuba diving can be calming and soothing.

Moore sees diving as “a way to escape into another world,” describing the underwater environment as “calm, quiet, weightless and at peace. It’s a wonderful way to find peace in nature and ourselves.”

“Veterans with PTSD really struggle to find that calmness in their day to day,” she continues. “Scuba diving allows them to reconnect with themselves.”

“The peace and quiet under the water is so therapeutic for me,” confirms Bonnie Casler. Casler served in the Army for 23 years, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. “Everything in the ocean seems to be slow motion. Even the fish. And it helps me to slow down.”

HEALING DOWN UNDER

Most veterans who participate in the WAVES Project have no diving experience. The organization provides classes to participants, helping them get certified. It also allows them to bring a “dive buddy” along with them, if desired.

“This is to assist the veteran with feeling secure and also helps build a positive activity for the veteran to experience and share with their

When Casler couldn’t initially find her dive buddy, Moore, it sent her into a panic. Once Moore was located, however (she was right above Casler — who couldn’t look up due to a neck issue), the two connected. Holding onto

family or friend,” says Casler, who participated in the November WAVES trip to the Channel Islands. “Disabilities such as PTSD and other anxiety disorders can cause great isolation from family and friends.”

She recalls observing other veterans participating in the program, and seeing how experiencing it with spouses, children or other family members really helped rebuild the bonds between them.

As Casler discovered, it helped her find her way back to herself as well.

Born in 1955 in upstate New York, Casler joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 1977. As a physical activity specialist, she helped soldiers who weren’t passing their physical fitness tests get into shape. Later, at 22 years of age, she went on active duty and was selected to become a recruiter.

“I had no idea that the master sergeant making the selection was a predator,” Casler recalls.

Even now, it’s difficult for Casler to talk about the trauma she endured at the hands of her First Sergeant, a well-decorated war veteran who initially seemed like a supportive mentor.

“At first he groomed me. He spent time training me and making me the best recruiter in the company,” she explains.

It wasn’t long, however, before he attacked Casler in her home, and threatened her with violence and loss of her career should she ever report him or tell anyone of his abuse. Like many women service members she knew with similar stories, she “soldiered on” and said nothing.

“I come from a generation where we served and we kept what we saw and experienced close to our hearts,” she explains. “We were not allowed to talk about anything. We sucked it up and drove on. Our mission was our focus.”

She endured the abuse from her immediate supervisor for the next three years — as did, according to Casler, the men under his command, some of whom would eventually die by suicide.

These experiences left their mark, inflicting Casler with acute anxiety, nightmares and other symptoms. In addition, she had foot and spinal injuries resulting from years carrying heavy

orn in Yugoslavia in 1934, Eugene Tkachenko and his family escaped World War II as refugees to America after surviving bombings, starvation and loss of loved ones.

“They came here with nothing but the clothes on their backs and he became a very successful person through hard work and determination,” said Nancy Smeets, the widow of Tkachenko, who died in 2014.

Among his many accomplishments, Tkachenko was a chemical physicist who helped put the rocket on the moon, spoke eight languages, “and he was an amazing artist, too,” Smeets said.

Originally working with watercolors, he turned to plein air painting when he picked up acrylics. His work has been exhibited in juried shows in Ventura County, and his acrylics have been purchased by art collectors. Some of Tkachenko’s most poignant artwork, however, came about after he suffered a stroke in 2002. He had to re-learn how to use his left side, had no use of his right side, and was unable to speak.

“It was tough,” recalled Smeets, of Westlake Village. “There were days where I would put that brush in his hand and he would throw it away . . . and I was just relentless, because I knew it was the one thing he could do that could still bring him joy.”

Slowly but surely, she said, “He began to do these fine line drawings. They’re really funny; kind of like cartoons, ironic and sardonic and very sweet, so they’re humorous.

His plein art is very studied and beautiful and artistic, but with the lines, he didn’t censor himself.”

Art Tkachenko created before and after his stroke is now on display in the exhibit A Retrospective Tkachenko and Johnson at Pacific Coast Art in Oxnard. The exhibit will

run through Feb. 1, 2020.

When it comes to her late husband’s artwork, she believes it’s important to “let it live — that’s the whole point of art.”

“He would be absolutely delighted to share his work and to inspire people,” Smeets added. “He was very resilient…what I would like people to take away is his resilience of his spirit, his love of life, his sense of beauty and his sense of humor.”

The exhibit also features artwork by the late Stanley Francis Johnson, born in 1907, who started illustrating for the motion pic-

ture studios during the Depression, and whose work is now on permanent display at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

In 1926, before graduation from high school, Johnson started working in the family business as a craftsman. In 1927, he started his career with the architectural firm of Carleton Monroe Winslow, which was the beginning of his lifetime “freelancer” career. He was sought out by many architectural firms for his renderings, which he did for commercial buildings in and around Los Angeles. Some of his more notable renderings are the proposed remodel of the Ambassador Hotel, the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Prudential Building and the L.A. Times building.

Johnson continued his long art career and branched into the film industry as a craftsman and illustrator. He spent his last 20 years at 20th Century Fox as an art director, and had a reputation for his impressive ability to draw and paint in perspective, which is also apparent in his expressionism artwork.

“In the 1930s, it was the Depression, and the only place that really had jobs was the movie industry,” said Johnson’s granddaughter, Joy Roy, owner of Pacific Coast Art. “He started working for movies like King Kong, and then went to MGM and did some big movies over there . . . he worked on The Good Earth for Cecil B. Demille, did artwork for Bye Bye Birdie and the original Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from 1931.”

Johnson’s artwork was in storage for several years when Roy and her father, Carl Reed, decided to showcase the late artist’s work in Roy’s gallery, which opened four years ago.

“We wanted to promote my grandfather and his work,” said Roy. “My grandfather was an art director for Peyton Place and did renderings for architectural firms, and he still found time to do his personal paintings and abstract impressionism.”

Her grandfather was very humble, Roy noted, and didn’t publicize himself or his work. But Johnson’s paintings did win awards and the artist was frequently asked to jury shows for the National Watercolor Society and California National Watercolor Society.

The idea for an exhibit featuring the work of these two accomplished artists was born when Roy met Smeets during a meeting of the Channel Island Gulls of Ventura County, a nonprofit which raises money for Ventura County’s charitable organizations. When Smeets told Roy about her husband’s fascinating history and amazing artwork, Roy knew pairing Tkachenko and Johnson would make a great show.

They began as a folk-rock band and gradually changed to blues. Their first show was at the Roxy in 1994. Since then, they have produced 14 albums and traveled extensively throughout Europe.

“It’s 25 years of touring in places like France and Belgium, and we played in Spain last year,” said Zirbes. “We go to Europe once a year and play.”

While they started in L.A., Zirbes and her husband, Kelly’s Lot songwriter and lead guitarist Perry Robertson, currently live in Oxnard and play at various Ventura County blues festivals. They also support charitable causes like Ventura County based C.A.R.L. (Canine Adoption and Rescue League).

Her blues pilgrimage began early in life as she listened to music with her mother in San Gabriel.

“My mother would listen to the blues and cry to the blues,” she recalled. “That’s how I learned the blues.”

Some of those influences included Aretha Franklin, Etta James and B.B. King. But she also gave a special ®

shout out to singers like Joe Cocker and Bonnie Raitt.

While her songs may include some pop and folk styles, her fan base has always believed she was a blues artist.

“All my fans would say I was a blues band, even though I was not a blues band,” she recalled. “They would say, ‘Oh, they play blues,’ and I would say ‘No, we don’t play blues. We play folk rock that’s very bluesy.’”

The blues style became more pronounced as she began to sing at blues festivals. She thinks the transition was always there just waiting to be revealed.

“As I started to get booked for things that were more blues, I started playing more bluesy songs and it came very natural to me,” she said. “It wasn’t something I had to fake.”

She admits that the music biz is not full-time. Most of her band mates have other work that pays the bills, but they all spend a good deal of time and money keeping the flame alive. More than dogged determination, however, music for her is also personal: “Music for me is to express my feelings. So I think it saved my life. That is the biggest motivator for me.”

Zirbes likes to keep it real by donating her band’s time for charitable causes.

“That has helped us to stick it out because doing this type of work, I feel fulfilled,” she observed. “I don’t feel like I am being wasted. We always do at least one or two charity gigs a month. I think that has kept us having a positive attitude about it.”

And so, a quarter century later, they are celebrating the fact that an independent artist can make a go of it and be around to reap the rewards. In her case: tours to Europe, the freedom to make their music without interference and the satisfaction of playing to people who enjoy them.

“The reason I wanted to do this 25-year thing is because we have to celebrate ourselves,” she said. “Independent artists don’t get celebrated, but I have been a band for 25 years and it’s been amazing.” ♦ Kelly’s Lot will play on Friday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Ventura Beach Club, 281 W. o you live to eat or eat to live? Both, actually — yet, I have found some confusion in the unique name of Live to Eat, a recent addition to Ojai’s restaurant scene. It took a little sleuthing to find the mostly Pan Asian restaurant with a wide-ranging menu of dishes from around the globe. To say there’s something for everyone here may be the understatement of the year.

During my first two visits, Live to Eat had no sign on its freshly painted building a few blocks from the center of town. Nevertheless, I was delighted to be greeted by the clever, arty interior wall sign made of hanging Chinese soup spoons.

The bright and cheerful spaces include a full bar (with a Morris Louis-like painting embedded with beer, wine and sake bottles!) and two dining rooms. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, (I failed to see Thai, but it may be lurking on the menu) and even Argentinian dishes are on the menu. The full bar has an extensive wine, beer and sake list. Non-alcoholic beverages include bobas, limitless iced green tea, sodas and taro tea.

On my first foray, I ordered the “bet you can’t eat just one” tempura enoki mushrooms (Japanese) and chaso bao (Chinese pork buns) from the menu that includes pho from Vietnam, edamame from Japan and even a Ramen cheeseburger.

The crispy mushrooms arrived with two handmade dipping sauces — one that started sweet and ended with a kick, and a chipotle sauce. Lightly fried, this is a tasty treat best shared, although a hungry diner could manage the entire basket. The bao (filled with tender pork), pickled cabbage and slivered vegetables were attractively presented in a small steamer basket.

good friend’s mom just died.

Out of nowhere, he told me that his mom never liked me very much. Frankly, the feeling was mutual, but I of course never said anything. While I don’t want to start a fight or anything, I’m bothered that he told me this. How should I let him know?

— Irritated When somebody talks trash about you, it’s natural to want to respond.

Unfortunately, sending this woman a “we need to talk” text will require a mediator with a Ouija board.

It does seem pretty rotten that your friend suddenly let his mom’s opinions of you off-leash. However,

by amy alkon consider that keeping a secret — having information of interest to another person that you need to keep barricaded in a closet in your head — is mentally and even physically stressful. Research increasingly finds that the body and mind are co-workers.

(Action leads to emotion and emotion to action.) In secret-keeping, holding back information causes psychological tension, which brings on physical tension — which can make keeping the secret both figuratively and literally a pain in the neck.

Research on secrecy by psychologist Michael Slepian suggests that it isn’t concealing information but having a goal of concealing information that stresses us out.

Unlike many other goals — the kind you can complete and check off on your to-do list — the goal to keep a secret has no endpoint. This turns keeping a secret into a sort of zombie goal, a goal that won’t die — or, in researcher terms, “an outstanding intention.” This makes it more accessible in memory — to the point where the mind tends to wander to it. And this mental reflux has some psychological costs: “The frequency of mind-wandering to secrets predicts lower well-being,” explains the Slepian team. “Thus, what seems to be harmful about secrecy is not having to conceal a secret but having to live with it and having it return to one’s thoughts.”

Other research, exploring willpower, finds that stress and “aversive” (feelbad) emotions like sadness diminish our ability for self-control.

So, your friend, under the emotional stress of grieving his mom, maybe lacked the energy he normally had to keep his mom’s feelings stowed in the, uh, overhead compartment.
