Ventura to decide on keeping Main Street car free

On Nov. 8 the Ventura City Council is planning to vote on whether or not to keep six blocks of Main Street in downtown closed to vehicles. The move compelled by the pandemic created a life line for many restaurants as indoor dining became restricted or avoided by the public.

Ojai to pilot tiny houses

On Oct. 21 the Ojai City Council approved a two-year pilot project that includes tiny houses in the city ordinances for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU). The regulations include fire hardening requirements for the tiny homes built.

Concerns were raised by Mayor Betsy Stix about affordability and whether tiny homes would help provide more affordable housing or just allow landowners to increase their income, as tiny houses will not be allowed to be a primary residence.

County slated to fund staffing for Climate Action Plan

In a draft agenda for the Nov. 9 meeting of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, the board will “receive and file” a budget and staffing plan for implementation of the county’s Climate Action Plan. The plan allocates an additional $716,904 in general fund appropriations.

County redistricting public hearing

Also on Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., the Ventura County Board of Supervisors will conduct a mandated public hearing regarding the supervisorial redistricting process which involves redrawing the jurisdictional lines of the supervisor districts. This meeting will include a staff presentation of Draft Alternative Supervisorial District Maps and the supervisors are being asked to provide direction to staff and the consultant on the draft maps. Limón, Bennett work to ban gun shows at fairgrounds

Brownley proposes honoring civil rights champion

Two of Ventura County’s state elected officials have pledged to introduce legislation that would ban gun shows at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

On Oct. 26 in a joint written statement, Sen. Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara) and Assemblymember Steve Bennett (D-Ventura) said that in the next legislative session they would aim “to enhance public safety by banning gun shows at the Ventura County Fairground. We believe the state should not be in the business of using state property to facilitate the sale of dangerous firearms.”

At recent meetings of the Ventura County Fairgrounds Board of Directors, members expressed their hope that state legislators would act on the issue, to protect the fairgrounds from legal action should the board desire to not contract with gun show vendors.

Irwin announces $1 million for VC Family Justice Center

Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) has announced securing $1 million in state funding for the planned Ventura County Family Justice Center satellite office in Oxnard. The funding is allocated in the 2021-22 state budget.

Irwin sought the funds following a meeting with Erik Nasarenko, Ventura County District Attorney.

The current Family Justice Center is located in Ventura and provides resources for survivors of trauma from domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, child abuse, hate crime, human trafficking and other types of assaults. Over a third of those served at the center are Oxnard residents and almost a quarter are monolingual; many are Mixteco.

On Oct. 21 Rep. Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) introduced a bill that would designate the U.S. Post Office at 1961 North C Street in Oxnard as the John R. Hatcher III Post Office Building.

Hatcher was a lifelong resident of Oxnard, community leader and civil rights champion.

“He was instrumental in establishing and founding many of the organizations that, to this day, support, encourage and empower the Black American community throughout Ventura County,” said Brownley.

Hatcher was the son of a Birmingham, Ala. civil rights leader during the Jim Crow era and followed in his father’s footsteps as a member of the NAACP for over 60 years, 40 years as president of the Ventura County Chapter. He was also a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

“My husband, John, would be so proud to know that his work did not go unnoticed. As many know, my husband fought to eliminate racial injustices and systematic inequalities,” said JoAnne E. Hatcher, Hatcher III’s widow, in a statement released on behalf of the family.

Rep. Mike Garcia (R-Santa Clarita) is one of 52 co-sponsors of this bill.

Local members of congress support lawsuit opposing fracking

Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara) and Brownley joined seven other U.S. representatives from California, Pennsylvania and Tennessee in support of a federal lawsuit opposing offshore hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells. The representatives cited impacts to sensitive environments and endangered species in a “friend of the court” brief filed.

The brief, filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, was submit-

ted in conjunction with appeals filed by two Santa Barbara-based organizations, Environmental Defense Center and Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, and the state of California opposing the approval by federal agencies of offshore fracking and acidizing.

The appeals filed challenge the approval of the controversial process in offshore oil and gas extraction without environmental review.

In 2019 EDC and SBCK filed an appeal in the Ninth Circuit defending a November 2018 court win prohibiting fracking and acidizing offshore in California.

Oral arguments were heard by the court on Oct. 18. Decision is pending.

U.S. budget resolution provides funds for farmers and ranchers

The U.S. Congress provided benefits to farmers and ranchers in the budget resolution passed last month that includes supplemental aid to those who suffered financial losses associated with drought, wildfires and other natural disasters that lead to crop damage.

Brownley introduces legislation to combat suicide rates

On Oct 1, Brownley introduced the Gun Suicide Prevention Act (House Resolution 5436) that would require firearm manufacturers and retailers to include labels that provide the number of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline [1-800-273-8255 (TALK)] on packaging.

“We lose 20 veterans a day to suicide, and 70% percent of veteran suicide deaths are from a gun. As a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, I work very hard to better the lives of our nation’s veterans, and suicide prevention is one of our highest priorities,” said Brownley. “In fact, two-thirds of gun deaths in the United States are from suicides.”

This legislation is supported by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

Eye on the Environment

Cat thieves countered by sheriff, local recyclers

aul Debler, of Newbury Park, has been struck twice by “cat thieves.”

About year ago, Debler’s Prius was parked on the street overnight, and thieves sawed off its catalytic converter. Taking precautions, he began parking at night in his driveway, expecting he would hear sawing, or at least deter thieves who would fear being heard, but thieves struck again last December.

“It’s not a car we use every day, so I didn’t discover the problem until a week later,” Debler said.

“When I started the car, it sounded like a Harley Davidson on steroids, and it smelled like exhaust.”

Replacement of the part and repair of the damage cost over $3,000.

When he reported the crime, police told him there had been four other catalytic converter thefts in the neighborhood the previous weekend. Now he has a video surveillance system and a light triggered by a motion sensor.

At the recommendation of his mechanic, he also participated in a free program offered by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) in some cities and available to residents countywide.

The program, called “Etch and Catch,” involves etching the car license number and spray painting the VCSO logo onto the catalytic converter. When police stop vehicles carrying marked catalytic converters, identifying information enables quick matching with victims. Quick matches enables victims to avoid paying a $500 fee many repair shops charge for buying a new catalytic converter without turning in an old one, and

etching also aids prosecutors.

“Arraignment has to happen within 72 hours of arrest,” explained Scott Reeder, an Ojaibased detective with the VCSO. “We give the District Attorney an open-and-shut case when we find stolen property and immediately match it to a victim.”

Even without labeling, police can detain suspects, review theft reports, and find victims, but the work requires significant time.

Sheriff’s deputies made two such arrests in July after responding to a 911 call from a woman in Meiners Oaks who heard noises at 3:30 a.m. and looked out her window to see a man under her Prius and a second man inside a running SUV. When deputies searched a vehicle matching the reported description, they found narcotics, burglary tools and four stolen catalytic converters. The next day, as deputies received reports from nearby residents, they returned the stolen parts to victims.

“Cat scratch labeling programs are spreading to more cities,” noted Senior Deputy Mike Baker, but he said that they usually are one-day events involving cars lining up for the etching at a police station. In Ventura County, the program is better.

“To make the program more convenient and widespread, our staff worked with local repair shops to offer free etching,” said Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub.

The VCSO provided each participating shop with supplies including aluminum stencils, donated byABACORP, a Moorpark machine tool manufacturer.

For about $135, several mechan-

But, according to Senior Deputy Becky Purnell, repair shops in Moorpark do not require additional, paid work to provide the free etching service. As the program expands, policies will vary, as in Camarillo, where two shops offer free etching only in conjunction with other paid services, according to Camarillo Police Chief Eric Tennessen.

Local scrap metal recyclers and auto salvage yards deny buying catalytic converters. “We don’t risk getting shut down because of a . . . stolen part,” said “Junior,” who declined to give his last name but who has been an employee with Tri-County Auto Dismantlers near Santa Paula for 16 years.

Local scrap metal buyers also follow state-mandated safeguards to avoid abetting theft.

Bringing metal to a scrap yard no longer earns recyclers instant cash. Recyclers instead must show identification and return in three days or wait for a mailed check.

SA Recycling in Oxnard and Standard Industries in Saticoy, the two biggest local metal recycling companies, also cooperate with police, reporting when metal arriving matches photos of stolen items.

In Brief Childhood cancer incidents increase within 2.5 miles of pesticide applications A study from 2020 (1) concludes that living in close proximity to pesticide spraying during the prenatal period may contribute to increased incidents of childhood leukemia while another (2) released this year found that children who live in proximity to where pesticides are being used have a higher risk of tumors in the central nervous system.

Conducted by UCLA, the studies found that use of 13 pesticides identified by researchers increased the risk of a child developing specific forms of cancers ranging from 1.6 times (a 60% increased chance) to 3.38 times (a 238% elevated risk) if their mothers lived within 2.5 miles of the pesticide application while pregnant.

The Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment (CRPE) and the Ventura County-Coalition Advocating for Pesticide Safety (VC-CAPS) point to the fact that 11 of these pesticides are used in Ventura County, and called on state and local officials to restrict their use. The groups state that while evidence of the negative effects of pesticides has been known for some time, these reports are California specific and provide correlations of individual pesticides to specific childhood cancer subtypes, and also establish links to in utero exposure over a long distance, up to 2.5 miles from the pregnant mother’s residence. The groups also emphasized that while state law has rules about pesticide use around schools and day care centers, they only apply within ¼ mile of schools.

Mobley pleaded not guilty to grand theft charges Michael Mobley of Oxnard pleaded not guilty to felony grand theft charges, which allege that he stole over $40,000 from Winchester Water Well Group through his company Progressive Land Management.

Winchester is a corporation made up of five ranch owners in the unincorporated area outside of Moorpark which hired Mobley’s company to manage and service the irrigation water well for the ranch properties.

Investigators allege that over four years beginning in 2014, Mobley falsified bank documents to conceal thefts of tens of thousands of dollars.

Progressive Land Management is based in Santa Paula and lists some of the major agricultural companies in Ventura County as clients.

Mobley was arrested in March and was released on bail. The investigation is ongoing, and other clients may have been impacted.

The parties in the matter are meeting Nov. 4 for a settlement conference.

Collins resigns from County Board of Education Citing health concerns, Rob Collins has resigned from his elected post as a member of the Ventura County Board of Education. He was first elected in 2002 for one term and was elected for a second term in 2018. He also served for 12 years as trustee for the Simi Valley Unified School District. Prior to that he worked as a classroom teacher and school administrator, earning Simi Valley Teacher of the Year in 1998.

His resignation was effective as of Monday, Nov. 1.

The Ventura County Board of Education will appoint a trustee to fill the unplanned vacancy and complete the rest of Collins term through next year.

The Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE) Board is made up of five elected trustees and an executive officer who oversee the programs the VCOE operates and the county’s 20 local school districts.

Día de los Muertos in Oxnard OPAC’s Day of the Dead will include Filipinx practices and ritual

N

early every human culture on Earth has a time of year when those who have died are honored and celebrated. Many of these practices are rooted in Indigenous cultures, becoming influenced later and today by colonizing countries with different religious beliefs.

Some held that during certain seasons the dead came back to eat, drink and have fun with their living family members, and that they want to enjoy the things they liked when alive.

One such tradition, Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is probably familiar to most of us in Ventura County. It is based in the culture of the Ancient Aztecs of what is today central and southern Mexico. They believed that the souls of dead family members used the scent of the marigold flower, zempasúchil, to find their way home to their living relatives once a year.

Remembrance, celebration and the cycle of life

That flower is still used today around the world to celebrate the many incarnations of the Day of the Dead. Over the past week or so you could find growers selling bunches of longstemmed, bright orange or yellow marigolds at local markets and on street corners across Ventura County, alongside roses

and other popular flowers. The flowers are strewn across altars in people’s homes, at grave sites or community altars.

Sometimes they are woven into large garlands that may encircle photographs of ancestors or in some cases the Virgin Mary or the Virgin of Guadalupe. The spirits are said to be drawn by the scent of the flowers guiding them back.

Bright, colorful sugar skulls are likewise iconic during Día de los Muertos. Skulls, considered a symbol of death or dying by many today, were also viewed as signifying the cycle of life, death and rebirth, and are an important part of celebrating those who have died. Skulls made of papier-mâché, dough and sugar are constructed and decorated (sometimes elaborately), then used to adorn gravesites and altars.

During Día de los Muertos, many families build altars. Alongside marigolds and sugar skulls one might find photos, food, drink, candles and incense for their dead loved ones. Toys that belonged to children who have passed and other treasured possessions can be included in altars.

While some aspects of Day of the Dead practices may be bittersweet, the focus is on celebration.

Telling stories and remembering are a way to ensure that someone who has passed remains alive, in some fashion, for the survivors, and that their memory is passed down to future generations. In some ways, one might consider this a way of giving that person everlasting life.

Ancient roots, many branches

Día de los Muertos is strongly associated with Mexico and people of Mexican descent, although

some version of it is also practiced in many Central and South American countries as well as Australia and New Zealand, Fiji, Indonesia, the Philippines and, quite recently, the Czech Republic — although that celebration was originally part of a promotion by the Mexican embassy in Prague.

Many of the communities that celebrate it also have ties to Spain, Portugal and France, whose explorers centuries ago sailed from Europe to various parts of the globe with the intention of “conquering” Indigenous peoples of the so-called “New World” . . . which included spreading the teachings and influence of the Roman Catholic Church.

Día de los Muertos is rooted in Indigenous, pagan beliefs that preceded the introduction of Christianity, yet its cultural significance cannot be ignored. Thus, today, Catholic dioceses in some countries have incorporated Día de los Muertos practices into their religious holidays. In Mexico, the celebrations take place Nov. 1-2, days which are called All Souls Day and All Saints Day in the Roman Catholic Church, Lutheran Churches and the Anglican Church, or Church of England.

Many countries, however, have developed their own traditions for the Day of the Dead, some as old as or older than those followed by the ancient Aztecs.

In Guatemala, for example, giant, colorful kites, often painted with meaningful images or depictions of those who have died, are flown and used to communicate with the dead during Festival de Barriletes Gigantes aka Festival of Giant Kites. The celebration is remarkably documented as going back at least 3,000 years.

For the Aztecs of Mesoamerica, the celebration honored their god and goddess of the underworld: Mictlantecuhtli and his consort, Mictecacihuatl, the Lord and Lady of the Land of the Dead.

Zaragoza Haiti has its Festival of the Dead, Fête Gede, in which practitioners of voodoo parade through the streets possessed by the Ghede (also spelled gede or guédé), spirits of death and fertility. This continues to be a part of voodoo religious celebrations today.

In El Salvador, La Calabiuza honors the dead with costumes of mythological beings, parading through cities with burning torches. This is an Indigenous custom that took place prior to the arrival of Spanish invaders.

In Southern Mexico and into Central America, Hanal Pixan, a Mayan celebration meaning “food for the souls,” celebrates those who have passed by cooking traditional Mayan dishes as offerings for the spirits of the departed.

Even in the Brittany region of France, some continue to remember the dead as part of traditions that date back to pagan times. Today people visit the burial plots of departed loved ones, remove their head coverings, kneel in respect and anoint the gravesites.

In all celebrations around the world, the link between the dead and living is emphasized and celebrated. Despite the manner of worship or location, these traditions share one thing: a belief that on these days, dead loved ones are nearby.

This year across Ventura County, many Día de los Muertos celebrations are being extended through Nov. 5 and the dayslong event at Oxnard Performing Arts Center is expanding to include the Filipinx version, sometimes called Hallowmas, Day of Those Who Have Passed Away or, in Tagalog, Araw Ng Mga Yumao or Araw Ng Mga Patay.

“We’re thrilled to partner up with OPAC on what may be the first Filipina/x/o- and Chicana/x/o-organized Día de los Muertos or Araw Ng Mga Patay in Oxnard,” said John Del Rosario with Oxnard Art Studio, a new artist collective.

“We’re excited to bring many emerging artists and cultural traditions to the festivities, including paying homage to the Filipino tradition. We love to see more endeavors of intercultural unity within our community!”

On Friday, Nov. 5, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., OPAC’s weeklong Día de los Muertos celebration will end with an eve-

ning festival including the Filipinx holiday customs, which include making offerings of food, flowers and prayers to deceased loved ones. Many practices pre-date the 16th-century Spanish colonization of the 7,640 islands that make up the Philippines. The Asian island nation is west of Vietnam and was a territory of the U.S. until 1946.

Filipinx performers will demonstrate their dance celebrating the day and decorate community altars.

OPAC’s event will honor the Indigenous roots of Día de los Muertos with an Aztec blessing and ceremonial dancing performed by Kalpulli Huitzilin Ihuan Xochitl of Fillmore.

Traditional ballet folklórico and mariachis will be joined by cinematic presentations on the theme of the day. Live DJs, arts and crafts activities, poets, food trucks, vendors of all kinds and photo booths will add to the fun and festivities.

OPAC has commissioned local artists to make 10 life-size papier-mâché calaveras (skulls) for a #CalaveraCrawl. These colorful skeletons will be on display all week throughout Downtown Oxnard.

“We plan to make this an annual tradition,” said Carolyn Merino Mullin, executive director of OPAC. Wear your dancing shows and plan to stay after 8:30 p.m. for the live music with bands Los So Lows, Los Honeys, Los Pink Droid and a headlining set from The Gritty End, a Los Angeles-based ska band.

Admission is free to attend this event; food, art and vendor wares will be available for purchase.

Galería Cooperativa to launch at Bell Arts Factory

he cultural hub that is Bell Arts Factory in Ventura will launch Galería Cooperativa, an exciting new art gallery, workspace and storefront. Inspired by the power of art and the love of community, Galería Cooperativa “will establish space for local artists to work alongside community members to develop solutions that address social problems like racism and injustice; economic inequity; domestic and sexual violence against women; and the impact of COVID-19 in minority communities.”

Galería Cooperativa’s grand opening takes place on Nov. 5, with a special evening of celebration that will include a performance by Ballet Folklórico, Día de los Muertos ofrendas (altar offerings) and a fundraising art exhibit.

The free public event begins at 6 p.m. at Bell Arts Factory.

“Open to the public” is at the heart of Bell Arts Factory’s mission, and Galería Cooperativa is a culmination of three years of dreaming, planning and hard work. Funded in part through a California Arts Council Impact Project Grant, Galería Cooperativa is the

brainchild of David Yoshitomi, former director of Bell Arts Factory, and Maribel Hernandez, interim executive director.

“Planting seeds of art in communities is one of the many ways to achieve a better world.

Art heals,” says Hernandez, who adds that they were inspired to bring together a mix of artists who work in various media. “Galería Cooperativa will be a vibrant studio space, where the community can meet with artists and see the healing power of art in action.”

The first artists who will be participating in the project include local BIPOC/LGBTQ+ artists Andrew Rodriguez and Sue Franco from Ventura, Sergio Martinez from Santa Paula, Cesar Aldana from Oxnard, and Yumiko Glover from Goleta. In addition to having the use of Bell Arts Factory studio and gallery space, each artist will “develop community workshops and classes designed to leverage art as a tool to create personal and social change.”

For example, “Andrew Rodriquez and Sergio Martinez can translate the voice and needs of communities into works of public art. Sue

Franco understands how the arts allow for escape, healing and expression in otherwise hopeless periods of violence, despair, and isolation. Overall, the goal is to create social equity for historically marginalized communities by giving individuals a voice through art.”

Hernandez adds that “the workshops are inspired from each artists’ unique experience and goals for the community.” For now, the classes, which will be geared towards teens and adults, will be donation-based.

The future is wide open for Galería Cooperativa and the artists and community it will serve. “When you plant a tree, you don’t know how many branches you will have,” Hernandez says. “There are so many ways to connect.”

The possibilities seem limitless. As Hernandez likes to say, “Go with the flow. You never know what comes up.”

Benitez remembers how her grandmother was discouraged from practicing Indigenous healing arts in her new

Pinaysphere (the word “Pinay” is a colloquial version of self-reference for Filipina women) began to take shape. They formed a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission: “to promote pre-colonial culture and art by fostering skills of Filipina/x girls and young adults” through art programs, mentorship opportunities and annual art exhibitions.

“It grew and grew,” she says. Within a few months, Pinaysphere began promoting more than 20 young Filipina/x artists on its social media platform, and hosting donation-based workshops.

One of the most popular was “Pinays Without a Pause,” which highlighted “well-known Filipina youth artists trailblazers who make noise across the globe [with] their arts.” During the summer of 2020, Pinaysphere launched their first one-onone mentorship program pairing with “creative experts such as Nike stylist and designer Sammy Jo Alonso, iconic streetwear brand Dimepiece’s co-founder and fashion designer Laura Fama, and Chicago-based DJ/Musician King Marie.”

Looking ahead, Pinaysphere plans to host programs at Oxnard Performing Arts Center as well as in classrooms and community centers, and it invites Filipina/x mentors and artists as well as donors and volunteers to get involved.

One of the major events on the horizon is OPAC’s Women’s Day event in March 2022.

As much as Benitez looks ahead, it is her own past that helps fuel her dedication to lifting up young Filipina/x artists and helping them to amplify their voices. “What would have happened if I had been given this information at a young age?” she asks herself. Benitez is determined to do her part so that no Filipina/x youth ever has to ask themselves that same question.

ull disclosure: I never ate at Surf N Taco in Ventura Harbor back in the day. Always noticed the sign, shaped like a surfboard, and heard good things, but somehow found myself gravitating towards the harbor’s other offerings . . . many of which face the water and not the parking lot. When word got out that the joint, now called Baja Bay Surf N Taco, had reopened under new ownership, I figured it was time to finally check it out.

I’ve been here about four times since then, because it is a fantastic spot for fish tacos and more, and I just can’t seem to stay away.

Co-owners Rick and Christina Magana are joined by several family members to fry, grill, fold and stack the freshest ingredients into mouthwatering fare cooked in the style of their family’s native Ensenada. The recipes are based on those of an older generation, coming from the creative mind and skilled hands of a Magana matriarch who once worked in a fish factory in Baja. With that kind of heritage, seafood is the main attraction here, but the menu offers some land and sea items as well.

The colorful interior is warm and welcoming: Wall murals with mermaids and flamenco dancers, papel picado (perforated paper) and ocean-inspired decorations abound. Several people — presumably various members of the Magana family — can usually be seen bustling about in the small kitchen.

Only a few tables can be found inside, but the patio outside has lots of shade.

The menu board above the register displays tacos, burritos, sopes, enchiladas, salads and fish and chips that can be ordered with your choice of halibut, shark, shrimp, chicken or carne asade. Large containers of agua fresca and horchata stand on the counter. Baja Bay emphasizes locally sourced ingredients, and thus the agua fresca flavors change frequently, based on what’s in season. All are delicious and refreshing; my personal favorite is the watermelon.

Based on the name, it will not be surprising to learn that the fish tacos are one of the best things this eatery offers.

Whether you’re biting into a light and crisp batter or a perfectly seasoned and grilled fish filet, the taste is fantastic, enhanced by lovely green salsa, crisp cabbage and a squirt of

spicy crema. Grilled shrimp makes for an especially appetizing burrito, although I think the battered and fried shrimp is better as a taco. You can add house-made salsas in a variety of flavors to customize the spice level of any dish.

Yet somehow, when presented in a burrito with more assertive fillings, they combine to make a very satisfying meal.

No, my copyeditor isn’t day-drinking, and yes, I mean “flick.” Netflick would have only one movie, and you and your partner would be forced to watch it every night of your life together...until one or both of you shrivel up and die of boredom or start dialing jackals with law licenses (aka divorce lawyers).

What can help is making your married life more like single people’s lives — uh, in ways that don’t remodel your vows into something more along the lines of suggestions.

In a New York Times op-ed, social historian Stephanie Coontz explains, “Single people generally have wider social networks than married couples, who tend to withdraw into their coupledom.” Though marriage “can provide a bounty of emotional, practical and financial support … finding the right mate is no substitute for having friends and other interests.”

Disappointingly, Coontz trots out a view widely (and uncritically) accepted among researchers: “On average, married people report higher well-being than singles.” And sure, there are studies that conclude this.

However, social psychologist Bella DePaulo points out rather glaring flaws in some of the research making

this claim. For example, she observes that even respected developmental psychologist E. Mavis Hetherington couldn’t see her faulty reasoning in concluding: “Happily married couples are healthier, happier, wealthier, and sexier than are singles.” The problem? Hetherington is comparing a subset of married people — HAPPILY MARRIED people (as opposed to ALL married people) — with ALL single people. I put this in perspective in a 2013 column: “Yes, shockingly, happily married people are happier than clinically depressed single people.”

In fact, people who are unhappily single — who feel “distress” about being single — tend to be those who’d previously been married (and especially those newly divorced or widowed), notes Coontz. About the single-’n’-miserableness of the newly divorced or widowed, you might think, “Duh...they’re lonely or grieving!” Some or many might be. But I think Coontz is onto something in advising married people to “cultivate the skills of successful singlehood.” (Conversely, “people who are successful as singles” — meaning socially connected and relatively content with their lives — “are especially likely to end up in happy

marriages, in large part because of the personal and social resources they developed before marrying.”)

Coontz suggests you bring other people into your marriage — though not like they did in the ‘70s at those suburban parties with all the couples dropping their keys into a bowl. She’s talking about friendships with people beyond your spouse, and ideally, not just one or two others but a whole group. Research (by evolutionary social psychologist Stephanie Brown, among others) consistently finds being socially connected increases individuals’ personal well-being and is even associated with better physical health. Likewise, “maintaining social networks … after marriage” can also “enhance and even revitalize your marriage,” writes Coontz.

As for how you two could put this into practice, you might start by making some date nights double-date nights. This might seem like a bad idea — a date-night romance- and intimacy-killer. However, Coontz describes a date-night experiment in which researchers “assigned some couples to spend time by themselves and have deeply personal conversations,” while others were set up with a couple they’d never met “and told to initiate similar conversations.” After-

ward, all of the couples “reported greater satisfaction with their relationship,” but only those who’d been on the double date reported feeling more “romantic passion” for each other!

Because it seems “the more” really is the (maritally) merrier, you and your husband could also host regular dinner parties, cocktail hours, brunches, and/or game nights. However, it’s also important that you each maintain individual interests, activities, and friendships. Ironically, regularly spending less time together — as well as following wise advice from Coontz to each maintain your ability to be self-reliant — should help you avoid going your separate ways. It’s great if your relationship starts to remind you of an iconic one in a classic movie — but not if the movie is “Cast Away,” starring Tom Hanks and a volleyball he draws a face on so he won’t be all alone on a desert island.
