VC Election 2020 Local results as counting continues

Mail-in ballots that were postmarked by Nov. 3 are also being counted and have until Nov. 20 to arrive at the County Clerk’s office to be counted.

The California Secretary of State has until Dec. 11 to certify the results from all counties.

Four districts occupy areas in Ventura County, either in whole or in part. A few of these races remain shoe-ins for the Democratic candidate, but one race, District 25, is a real nailbiter. As of press deadline Republican Mike Garcia leads Democrat Christy Smith by a very slim 159 votes in a tight race for this House seat that both parties are watching closely. District 25 reaches into Ventura County in Simi Valley.

District 24: Democrat incumbent Salud Carbajal takes 68 percent of the vote over Republican challenger Andy Caldwell.

District 26: Julia Brownley, the incumbent Democrat, easily held off Republican Ronda Baldwin-Kennedy with 61 percent of the vote.

District 30: Brad Sherman, a Democrat, overtakes Republican Mark Reed with a solid 69 percent of the vote.

District 19: Monique Limón, a Democrat in the state assembly, leads with 64 percent of the vote over Republican candidate Gary Michaels.

District 27: Henry Stern, the incumbent Democrat, received 61 percent of the vote in a convincing rebuttal to Republican candidate Houman Salem.

District 37: Steve Bennett, the Democratic candidate, moves from the Ventura County Supervisor seat to the state legislature with 68 percent of the vote over Republican candidate Charles Cole.

District 38: An interesting race for this district, that is mostly in Los Angeles County, with two Republican candidates vying for the seat left vacant by Christy Smith. Seventy percent of Ventura County voters in this district cast their ballot for winner Suzette Valladares, mirroring districtwide voters who contributed 76 percent of their votes to her, over Lucie Lapointe Volotzky.

District 45: Fifty-four percent of Ventura County voters in Bell Canyon cast for Democrat incumbent Jesse Gabriel, who takes the seat with 66 percent of the vote districtwide over Republican challenger Jeffi Girgenti.

County Supervisor, 5th District:The projected winner is Carmen Ramirez with 55 percent of the vote over Tim Flynn.

Camarillo City Council: Dist. 3 - Kevin Kildee, 41 percent; Dist. 4 - Tony Trembley, 77 percent.

In the Elks’ initiation ritual, flags are presented to new members, and the Exalted Ruler of the chapter says, “Preserve it as a memento of your full duty in the preservation and defense of all it represents.”

Certainly, the advent of more durable flags has helped with preservation, but this change has also made dignified retirement of flags more difficult.

The Ventura, Thousand Oaks and Oxnard Elks Lodges accept used flags for retirement, and the traditional cremation ceremony has been their practice, but Gonzales reports the odor and fumes of burning plastic are increasingly prevalent as the content of flags has been changing. In response, the Thousand Oaks lodge began a practice likely to become more widespread. In a ceremony coordinated with local Boy Scouts, they disassembled plastic fiber flags for dignified burial.

A 2014 article in Scouting magazine notes individuals are not violating U.S. flag code if they use other methods of discard, as long as the method of retiring the flag is done in a “respectful and dignified manner.” Other methods cited include cutting the flag into quarters as part of a ceremony ending in solemn interment.

Ron Fitzgarrald, who served in the Navy from 1968 to 1970 and is now public affairs officer for Vietnam Veterans of Ventura County, has also taken part in ceremonies involving disassembly, rather than cremation of flags. After quartering flags, an officer cut out the individual stars and presented them to veterans. “You don’t have to go tightly around each of the five points,” Fitzgarrald explained. “The one presented to me was cut in a

circle around the star, and I keep it in my uniform jacket pocket.” A member of the Vietnam Veterans collects discarded flags from a publicly accessible flag drop box in front of the Ventura County Government Center’s Hall of Administration, but the organization is not accepting new locations to service.

A more unusual, but also dignified, flag retirement option is presented in the work of Oxnardbased artist David Schwartz. Recently, at the Reagan Library, Schwartz displayed a patriotic work painted on a canvas made of retired flags, depicting Jewish American war heroes. The work is destined for the Jewish War Veterans’ national museum in Washington D.C. Schwartz is currently collecting retired cotton flags for a series of works depicting “Classic Car Americana” and also accepts from the public “flags with history,” meaning flags flown over important locations or associated with moving family stories. Either on commission by a family and for return to them, or else for sale in galleries, Schwartz creates art on these flags depicting the patriotic stories.

“I have hundreds of synthetic fiber flags people have dropped off for me,” he explained. “But other than the ‘flags with history,’ now I can accept only cotton flags until I get a commission for a large outdoor acrylic sculpture I have in mind.” Schwartz can be reached at SchwARTZ@ARTZworks.com Cleaning and mending a flag is a patriotic act which can forestall discard. Flags may be cleaned by hand or in a washing machine. For repair, Bryan Miller, of American Flags and Cutlery, suggests checking with a local sail repair or general repair shop, and mail-in repair options are available via the Internet. For example, American Flags Express, based in Wisconsin, sells 20 foot by 30 foot polyester flags for $640 and repairs most, with mail back, for $60. If the rows of double stitching need to be

somewhat aware of parts of the Brown Act and even though he’s not in office yet, he is being mindful about not engaging in “serial meetings,” when elected officials speak or communicate with others on the same elected body, resulting in a majority discussing issues

that may come before them.

Making the decision to run for office can be a difficult one, but for Johnson the decision made sense. “I’ve been involved in the College Area Community Council for so long and with a district election it was important to me that

by David Goldstein If you placed a flag on a veteran’s grave last Wednesday for Veterans Day, you might take comfort in knowing your flag was most likely collected, safely stored and will be reused to honor additional veterans at future Veterans Days, Fourth of July events, or Memorial Day commemorations. Three days after patriotic holidays, most cemeteries collect long-lasting flags placed on graves, making the flags available for future visitors.

Similarly, if you noticed impressively large American flags waving from the backs of vehicles rallying for a candidate prior to the recent election, you may take comfort in knowing those flags most likely survived the wind whipping of traveling at freeway speeds.

Flags are lasting longer because increasingly, flags are made from plastic fibers. The strongest are made from two-ply polyester, with each stripe held by four rows of double stitching, serving as the equivalent of I-beams in construction. Not far behind the strength of those banners are flags made from thick nylon.

Weaker flags, made from single ply polyester, cotton/polyester blends, or even just cotton can also be altered to last longer. For example, Jess Gonzales, past president and 40-year member of the Oxnard Elks Lodge, notes the 5 foot by 8 foot flag flying daily over his lodge is made of cotton, but he helps flags last in good condition over a year by spraying new flags with at least one can of Scotchgard water and sun shield. If you plan to drop off a worn flag for dignified retirement by the Boy Scouts, Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars or other organization, call first to ensure the location near you is accepting flags, and consider including a monetary donation. Providing flag retirement service is time consuming, and the increasing prevalence of plastic flags is making it more difficult, so support of the organizations’ other charitable causes is appropriate.

Layla finds her way home Dog Days nonprofit helps owners of missing pets

Layla was adjusting to her new home nicely. She took a quick liking to Rasmussen’s two smaller and much older dogs, and would play chase with Rasmussen each morning. She also started approaching her new owner when the other dogs got treats, and even began accepting treats from Rasmussen’s hand. Layla would occasionally lay down six to eight feet away from her.

Luckily, on the day Layla went missing, Rasmussen realized it quickly and knew which way she went down the street. Tools and resources available through Dog Days include game cameras, field cameras and food traps. Volunteers monitor the cameras using a phone app so that they will know immediately if a trap is successful or if a wild animal is caught by mistake. De Collibus emphasized that Dog Days “traps responsibly” to ensure a quick response in the event that a pet or wild animal is caught.

The organization gets daily calls and multiple posts on social media pages, and it assists in rescues in Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties, as well as in the desert areas. Dog Days has also done search and rescue in Tennessee. De Collibus estimated that it assists in hundreds of cases a year, if not thousands.

De Collibus explained that many pet owners panic, and frequently start driving or walking around, calling their pet’s name. “But they [the pet] go into fright or flight,” and frequently even the most loyal dog won’t respond. “They think they are in trouble.”

De Collibus said usually, if the animal is healthy and can avoid being hit by a car, it will frequently return to the location from where it was lost.

Rasmussen said Dog Days told her “more signs, brighter and bigger. Post everywhere you know, get people spotting her and calling you.” So, she made large, bright pink signs with a big photo of Layla. Her contact phone number was written large, too, to make it easy to read by a passing car. Rasmussen added instructions to not approach the dog, which would cause Layla to run away.

Calls started quickly coming in, and all the sightings were reported to Dog Days. Layla was spotted in Lynnmere and Wildwood — residential areas on the edge of open spaces. Rasmussen took her small dogs (that Layla had befriended) and walked them back and forth in that area. She guessed that Layla likely travelled around 20 to 30 miles during her walkabout, and at times was as far as 10 miles away from her new home.

On Sunday afternoon, Oct. 25, the dog was spotted in Hill Canyon Park, about a quarter mile from the parking lot. Dog Days placed a food and scent trap nearby. That night, reports came in that Layla was close to home.

Dog Days suggested making a strong scent trail with the companion dogs, dog food, treats and clothing of the people she had bonded with. Rasmussen was not comfortable putting out “dirty socks” but opted for t-shirts.

Her daughters made a “dog treat trail” along the road to the gates. In the morning, the kids found her in the yard.

“They were amazing,” said Rasmussen about Dog Days.

Perhaps the only downside looking back is that now Rasmussen has to take down all the signs she posted, “I had forgotten how many I put up.”

“It’s mind boggling, after only being here for three weeks,” Layla found her way home. “I’d understand if it was somewhere she lived her entire life . . . she seems happy to be home,” Rasmussen said. Layla had her tail tucked between her legs initially upon her return home, but now Rasmussen says “her tail is up and wagging.”

Tags and Microchips

According to Dog Days, when it comes to missing pets, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Pets that have ID tags with their owners’ phone number and are microchipped are more likely to be found and returned, and found sooner as well.

“The points we like to drive home are to put a tag with a phone number” on the pet, and “update the microchip,” said De Collibus.

W

hen he moved into a new house in San Diego, photographer John Mireles asked his neighbors if he could photograph them, and then he hung their portraits on his fence.

The reaction was overwhelmingly positive and it helped Mireles bond with his new neighbors.

The experience got him thinking.

Inspired by writer Jim Collins’ idea of a “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” (BHAG), Mireles thought, “if I went to all 50 states and photographed Americans . . . that would be a BHAG.” It took several years and a few cross-country trips in his RV, but Mireles did it. The result is Neighbors, a photography exhibit on display at Studio Channel Islands.

Everywhere he went, Mireles asked total strangers if he could take their photo. The subjects are from various walks of life, representing many different backgrounds.

“Americans are incredibly friendly people,” Mireles says.

“Doesn’t matter where they’re from or what political stripe, by and large, they’re friendly and welcoming. We all want the same thing.” When he explained his project to people, Mireles

expressed how he hoped it would help us get to know each other as Americans so that we might get along better. The typical response was “well, we need more of that!

The photos in the show are exhibited in pairs. “The photos exist in dialogue with each other,” Mireles explains. “Sometimes the people are similar. Sometimes they are different. You can see that even if people are dissimilar, they share something.”

“My favorite pairing is an old guy from Vermont. He’s a farmer and he’s wearing the clothes of a farmer. He has the hands of a man who has worked all his life . . . I paired him with a Black woman from the Southside of Chicago. She is very urbane and dressed very nicely. They’re both looking at the camera. I hope what people take away from it is our underlying humanity. There’s a strength in these people. They share something fundamental and I hope that creates empathy and helps to bridge a divide.”

Prophetic look at 2020

Bush’s new album is a glimpse into race wars and injustices

ush lead singer Gavin Rossdale is, admittedly, hesitant about playing the Concerts in Your Car series in Ventura County on Saturday, Nov. 21. That’s not to say he isn’t excited.

“I can’t wait to do this,” Rossdale said.

“I’m a little apprehensive, in the sense of my memory of shows and people sitting on their cars. The best ones, I’ve heard, are people who drive pickup trucks, reverse into the spot and tailgate. They have a really great time.

“I’m glad people are wearing masks. I want everyone to be safe but not fall ill.”

Bush is pushing its latest album, The Kingdom Deluxe Edition, which was released Oct. 30. The critically acclaimed original collection was released in July without the extras.

“We really wanted to make a stand-alone record,” Rossdale said. “I learned it’s OK to make mid-tempo boring records nobody cares about. I wanted to challenge everything we’ve done and make life interesting and vital and make music that really affects people. They’re crafted songs ready to play to 40,000 people.”

The songs are somewhat prophetic, too.

Rossdale said the album is a rallying call to arms that fell into place “quite extraordinarily.”

The songs address social injustices, race wars, wildfires, isolation and an uprising — and the songs were written in January and February.

“It makes me look really smart,” Rossdale said with a laugh.

For The Kingdom, Rossdale wrote 30 songs and chose the ones that had the most fluidity.

“I do weird things when I write — weird modulations and key modulations just because I’m untrained and do it from ear. A song’s only as good as its weakest moment. I think I went for what were the most complete things. I went with the songs I believed in.”

He regretted not including the song “The Worthless Prophets,” but got his chance to release it to the public with the deluxe edition.

“Normally, I think of deluxe editions as a marketing ploy to get people to buy it again,” said the cheeky Rossdale. “With ‘Heroes,’ with ‘Undone’ with Mike Garson and the two extra tracks, it’s a good value. I don’t know who needs live tracks. It’s pretty rare that I like a live track. Wait, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s ‘Superstition’ is one live recording I would absolutely get.”

“Oh, David Bowie live. I would get that.

Normally, they’re all sh*t — even mine,” added Rossdale, whose deluxe edition includes live versions of “Flowers on a Grave” and “The Kingdom.”

The band — which today features Rossdale on guitars and vocals, guitarist Chris Traynor, bassist Corey Britz and drummer Nik Hughes — has sold more than 20 million records in the United States and Canada, thanks to hits like “Comedown,” “Glycerine,” “Machinehead,” “Swallowed,” “The Chemi-

cals Between Us” and “The Sound of Winter.”

Besides the Concerts in Your Car show, Rossdale will participate in a Bowie birthday tribute organized by the Thin White Duke’s keyboardist Mike Garson. At 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8 — Bowie’s birthday and near the fifth anniversary of his passing — artists like Rossdale, Trent Reznor, William Corgan, Perry Farrell, Joe Elliott, Macy Gray, Ian Astbury, Lzzy Hale, Corey Glover and Judith Hill will honor him.

On social media, Garson said, “We’re bringing together dozens of Bowie alumni band members, too, spanning David’s 1969 self-titled album through Blackstar.” Tickets are on sale through rollinglivestudios.com/bowie/.

Rossdale said this project was important to him as he is a big Bowie fan: “Heroes” is one of six bonus tracks on The Kingdom Deluxe Edition.

“My sort of participation in the tribute began with a track I did for [Garson] for MusiCares and he asked what song we should do,” said Rossdale. “We did ‘Heroes,’ just me and him on the piano. It’s really beautiful . . . he rang me up a couple weeks ago and asked if I would do this five-year anniversary show with a whole lot of singers and all that. I chose the song and it’s really fun to play with Bowie’s band again. I played with them when David died. It’s a real honor.”

The deluxe edition was fun to work on during the pandemic, during which he

improved his guitar skills. He’s been spending a lot of time discovering new music as well.

Rossdale enjoys James Blake and Joséphine de La Baume’s Film Noir, as well as Deftones’ new record, Ohms.

“With Spotify, it’s so much fun,” he said.

“I can listen to Sun Ra and then fall into Chet Baker and Sepultura for a minute, and then into Roxy Music for two days. I fly around the place and listen to anything that takes my fancy. It’s not great for us musicians. We should be buying music. With this, we can buy sandwiches. But it’s something great for listeners.”

As the Concerts in Your Car show nears, one thing Rossdale is excited about is playing close to home.

“It’s a good place for us,” he said. “It’s beautifully close to home. I like shows where I can drive home afterward.”

“It’s just such a great privilege and opportunity to be able to play live and work your craft,” Rossdale added. “It’s beautiful and I like it because the band is really on fire and there’s a really good energy with all of us. We love playing. It’s going to be this unbridled amount of energy.”

But before we start measuring you for your “Handmaid’s Tale” bonnet, consider whether there’s a noncreepy, non-control freakish reason the guy wants to choose the dining establishment and the entertainment.

Is he some extreme foodie who pores over restaurant reviews and follows chefs like other guys follow baseball players, while you’re simply a chick who likes to eat out?

By the way, I’ve personally horrified some waitresses who’ve overheard me asking my boyfriend to tell me what I should order. I do this not because I am some shell of a person and have no opinions but because I got tired of having food envy when our dinners came. I realized my boyfriend is some sort of culinary sniffer dog, using mere words on a menu to divine the tastiest, most exciting entree, much like tracking dogs use an old sweatshirt to sniff their way to a buried dead body.

However, save for the few areas one’s partner has special expertise, there are things in a relationship that can be outsourced, and your decision-making should not be one of them. You create who you are

through your choices, and if you make no choices, there’s no “you.”

The elimination by a partner of the need for you to have an opinion could be the beginnings of “coercive control.” This is a term by sociologist Evan Stark for an insidious form of subjugation in a relationship that an abuser uses to dominate and control their partner. It’s a gradual psychological hostage-taking, breaking down a person’s independent self, their concept of reality, and their ability to make decisions for themselves.

Victims of coercive control suffer “perspecticide,” which Stark describes as a loss of the ability to “know what you know.” This comes through their gradual isolation from friends and family and losing touch with their opinions, desires, and values, including their ability to discern what is right and wrong. Their abuser (who research finds can be male or female) often resorts to intimate partner violence when coercive control of their victim fails, like if he or she shows a flash of independent thought.

In a healthy relationship, a person does not get erased, their perspective never taken into account. Healthy relationships are interdependent.

Though one partner might not agree with the other’s every belief and idea, they generally respect each other’s thinking and are open to their suggestions. Marriage researcher John Gottman describes this as partners accepting each other’s “influence.”

This mutual influencing seems to make for more satisfying romantic partnerships with more staying power, explains Gottman: “Men who allow their wives to influence them have happier marriages and are less likely to divorce than men who resist their wives’ influence. Statistically speaking, when a man is not willing to share power with his partner, there is an 81 percent chance his marriage will self-destruct.”

Women tend to be higher in a “pleaser” personality trait, “agreeableness,” which, on a positive note, manifests in being warm, kind, generous, and motivated to have positive interactions with others. On a darker note, it can make a woman with a dominant partner more likely to do as she’s told. That said, your feelings are not the boss of you, and you can simply decide to override them and assert yourself: Have opinions, make decisions, and stand up for yourself.

Accordingly, your interactions with this man should be driven by the understanding that you are his equal in the relationship, not his subordinate. To see whether he’s up for an equal partnership — a girlfriend rather than a female serf — tell him you don’t think it’s healthy for you or the relationship for him to make all the decisions. Going forward, you want shared responsibility for decision-making. For your part in this, you need to take responsibility: Assert yourself by asserting your opinions and desires when there are decisions to be made.
