NEWS “Maximum speed and minimum care” Groups sue county over General Plan

n Oct. 14, two groups, Ventura County Coalition of Labor, Agriculture and Business (VCCOLAB) and the Ventura County Agricultural Association (VCAA), filed legal action in Ventura County Superior Court against the county of Ventura regarding the recent adoption of the 2040 General Plan (GenPlan) and the related Environmental Impact Report (EIR).

The parties are seeking a “writ of mandate” to set aside the GenPlan document and point to several reasons in support of this request in a 52-page filing. The GenPlan document governs land use decisions including zoning, oil and gas drilling, and lays out programs and steps to reduce emissions in the unincorporated county areas to draw down the area’s impact on climate change.

The first page of the filing documents charges that the county approved the GenPlan and EIR “with maximum speed and minimum care” and goes on to allege that “a local official with larger political ambitions, intent upon creating a legacy and adopting these documents prior to his departure from local office,” led to a process that was rushed and failed to include accurate analysis and proper public outreach. The parties further charge that those failings resulted in a process that violates the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

VCCOLAB and VCAA were referring to outgoing Ventura County Supervisor Steve Bennett (Dist.1) who is termed out of office at the end of December and is running for state assembly.

VCCOLAB strongly opposed the county’s SOAR initiative for which Bennett was a main organizer.

The GenPlan update process began over four years ago and from the beginning was slated to be completed in 2020. Several public input meetings were held across Ventura County and public hearings were held with input periods. The document went into effect on Oct. 15. Unless the parties file for and the court approves a stay, the provisions of the GenPlan will be applied to all projects even as this legal action makes its way through the court.

In the final hearings to adopt the GenPlan, VCCOLAB members called on the county to delay the

approval to allow for further analysis and public review. Due to a procedural issue, the final vote was delayed two weeks. The supervisors, in a majority split 3-2 vote, approved the GenPlan on schedule.

Bennett was joined by Supervisors Linda Parks (Dist. 2) and John Zaragoza (Dist. 5) in adopting the GenPlan, with Kelly Long (Dist. 3) and Bob Huber (Dist. 4) voting no.

The court filing states: “A General Plan is the most important land use blueprint that a local government creates. It establishes the foundation for the regulations under which a community shall live and work for decades into the future — the California Supreme Court has recognized it as the ‘constitution’ for future development.”

The county held numerous public outreach meetings and hearings over the four-year process of developing the GenPlan document, but VCCOLAB and VCAA point out that the law requires disadvantaged communities be given ample opportunity to review and comment on all aspects of the GenPlan and EIR. The organizations go on to list several particular provisions in two sections of the document: Agriculture and Open Space, and policies in those sections that mandate the use of electrified equipment as part of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The filing claims that by restricting the use of natural gas-powered equipment, “the County has unlawfully encroached into state and federal law by banning future development and use of natural gas infrastructure.” The parties go on to allege that the public did have ample opportunity to review and thus participate, as CEQA requires, in the creation of the new GenPlan.

The case has been assigned to Hon. Kevin G. DeNoce, in Department 43 of Ventura County Superior Court.

Oil and land interests sue county

The recent filing by VCCOLAB and VCAA isn’t the only legal action faced by the county due to the General Plan.

Five entities representing the oil sector and local land interests filed separate actions on Oct. 15 in Ventura County Superior Court against Ventura County and two actions name the Board of Supervisors. The filings also seek a writ of mandate relating to the county’s approval of the 2040 GenPlan which places new restrictions on the oil industry such as required setbacks from homes and prohibitions on flaring of natural gas.

Three of the entities suing Ventura County, California Resources Corporation (CRC), Western States Petroleum Association and Lloyd Properties are represented by Los Angeles-based law firm Alston and Bird. The other two parties that filed against the county have other counsel; AERA Energy is represented by attorney David T. Moran with the firm of Manatt, Phelps and Phillips and Carbon California Company LLC is represented by Neal P. Maguire with Ferguson, Case, Orr, Patterson.

CRC recently filed for bankruptcy.

Lloyd Properties owned over 2,000 acres of land in the Ventura Hillsides and donated about 800 acres of it to the Rancho Ventura Conservation Trust in 2016.

Election Briefs PACs go big in Ventura City Council races Several political action committees (PAC) have contributed a combined $100,809 into current Ventura City Council candidates’ races, with most of those funds going to Sacramento-based political consulting firms.

The funds come from three PACs: The Ventura Chamber of Commerce PAC, the Ventura Police Officers Association PAC and the PAC associated with the Ventura City Firefighters, called Ventura City Firefighters for a Better Community.

According to the Chamber’s website they work to elect “pro-business” candidates.

The funding levels represent an increase over previous non-district elections.

“What has changed is the districts.

They are able to concentrate funding in just a few areas,” said Marie Lakin, a resident of Ventura who ran for Ventura City Council in 2018. She said the district format allows the PACs to do multiple mailers just for their candidates, as well as phone banking. “It makes a big difference and candidates who are not endorsed [by a PAC] are really at a disadvantage...What is really disappointing to me is that we were sold these district elections as a way for grassroots candidates to spend less and work just in their neighborhoods.

But spending has actually increased.”

The funds are being directed to support the same three candidates, one in each of the city council districts, on the Nov. 3 ballot. The PAC funds are supporting candidates Nancy Pedersen for District 7, Aaron Gaston for District 3 and Doug Halter for District 2. The Chamber PAC also targeted $2,981 to oppose the re-election campaign of Christy Weir in the District 2 race and contributed $1,500 in support of Tim Flynn’s race for Ventura County Supervisor (District 5), in a hotly contested race with Carmen Ramirez.

Lakin has endorsed Mike Johnson, a candidate for Dist. 3, who is not backed by the PAC funding.

According to the most recent filings as required by law, the Chamber PAC has contributed about $57,491, $29,491 from the firefighters PAC and about $13,824 from the city police PAC. Most of the funds were spent in support of political mailings and to two Sacramento-based firms, Grindstone Communications LLC and LG Campaigns.

Contributions to the Ventura Chamber PAC include local attorney Peter Goldenring ($2,000), Sempra Energy ($1,000), Electra Media ($5,000) and McGrath Farms ($2,500). The California Real Estate PAC ($2000) and a Carpinteria-based real estate company also contributed ($5,000) to the Chamber PAC. Candidates and their campaigns are prohibited from interacting with the activities of a PAC.

Simi Valley candidate statements were omitted, twice The candidate statements of Simi Valley mayoral candidate Joe Ayala and Simi Valley City Council candidate (Dist. 3) TJ McInturff were omitted from the voter information guides mailed to registered voters in the appropriate boundaries.

In the attempt to correct the error by resending the information guides, Ayala’s statement was left out a second time, but only in the guides mailed to Dist. 3 voters.

A corrected guide was mailed out a third time, but arrived after ballots were received.

County says to expect lines at in-person voting locations In a statement dated Oct. 23, the Ventura County Elections Division announced that there are a record number of registered voters in the county (500,062) and with just 173,695 ballots received so far, the voting public is urged to avoid long lines and vote early.

“I urge voters to return the voteby-mail ballot they received early to avoid lines at voting locations and limit contact with others due to COVID-19.

Don’t wait until November 3 if you want your vote included in the first results on Election Night,” said Mark Lunn, Ventura County Clerk-Recorder, Registrar of Voters.

He said that registered voters who have not received their mail-in ballots or anyone who needs a replacement ballot should contact the elections office to request a second ballot by calling 805654-2664. Voters can also register up to and on Nov. 3 at the Ventura County Government Center, Elections Division Early in-person voting at 48 locations begins Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.. In person voting is also available at the Elections Division offices at the Ventura County Government Center, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura.

The Oct. 23 statement said, “Voters who wish to vote in-person should expect to wait in line at voting locations as the number of locations is less than previous elections due to the Coronavirus and the state’s declaration of an all vote by mail election. In-person voting locations are open for four days and voters are encouraged to take advantage of the extended days and hours for in person voting and not wait until November 3.”

Three ways to vote

THE UNITED STATES POST OFFICE All vote-by-mail ballots in California are sent to voters with prepaid first-class postage. They need only be completed, placed in the provided signed envelope and put into the mail. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked on or before Nov. 3, and received by Nov. 20, to be counted.

BALLOT DROP BOX There are 34 drop boxes available. Most of these boxes are available to receive ballots seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Some of the drop boxes are located indoors and will be available during normal business hours.

Ballots are collected from drop boxes throughout the day by a team of two Ventura County Elections Division staff members.

If the mailed ballot is not provided, the voter will be required to use a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots require further confirmation in order to be tallied.

In-person voting locations will be open Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 7 a.m.-8 p.m.

Tracking toxins and talking transitions

T

his year, the California legislature passed chemical “right to know” legislation, requiring disclosures of ingredients in cosmetics and menstrual products. Previously, some ingredients could be listed as “fragrance” or could bypass disclosure requirements through trade secret protections. Dr. Joanne Brasch, project manager of the nonprofit California Product Stewardship Council, a leading advocate of the legislation, said, “Maybe now we will know which ones [manufacturers] are adding lead, asbestos or chemicals linked to negative health impacts.”

The council has also brought attention to the use of polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, in rugs and carpets. Regulations on PFAS will take effect next spring, and even before the deadline, American manufacturers are reportedly phasing out PFAS, using changes in fiber design, instead of the application of a chemical, to help carpets and rugs resist dirt, staining and premature aging.

Key to the process of identifying potentially problematic chemicals is the Green Ribbon Science Panel, which advises and acts as a resource to the California Department of Toxic Substances

Control and the California Environmental Policy Council. The next meeting, after nearly a year on hiatus, is Friday, Oct. 30, and it is open to the public via Zoom. Go to https://dtsc.ca.gov/grsp/ grsp-meetings/ to learn more.

The meeting on Oct. 30 will discuss 1,4-Dioxane in cleaning and personal care products. This is a contaminant created unintentionally during the manufacture of surfactants, or compounds affecting the solubility of products in water. It is a suspected carcinogen, so the department will ask manufacturers to come up with ways to minimize it, according to Karl Palmer, acting deputy director of the Safer Consumer Products branch of the Department of Toxic Substances Control.

Palmer credits 2008 “Green Chemistry” laws in California for initiating a public process to identify priority products for study and prodding those selling the products to conduct an analysis of alternatives. This process shifted the burden of investigation from government to private parties, academia and non-profit organizations.

“The truth is, what we used to do was like playing a giant, high-stakes game of chemical ‘whack a

mole,’” Palmer said. “When something came up as potentially dangerous, we were reacting and studying that one, then you see laws and regulations to protect people, but there is a safety gap,” he said.

A 2006 study by scientists at University of California, Berkeley revealed the size of the gap. “Of the 85,000 chemicals in commerce in the United States, most have not been studied by regulators for human and environmental effects,” Palmer said of the study’s conclusion.

The lack of knowledge led to a related problem.

Sometimes, when one toxic substance was banned, another one, even worse, was used in its place.

This was called “the problem of the regrettable substitute,” said Palmer.

For example, according to the Sept. 13, 2018 edition of Science Magazine, a publication of the non-profit American Association for the Advancement of Science, manufacturers of the soft plastic spouts in some drinking water bottles phased out bisphenol A (BPA), but switched to bisphenol S (BPS) and diphenyl sulfone. Consequently, some products marketed as “BPA-free” contained substitutes which “may cause the same ill effects in mice, particularly in reproductive cells.”

With BPA in water bottles, toys, canned food linings and even cash register receipts, “a 2003–04 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 93% of Americans have at least trace levels of BPA in their blood,” and although studies by the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration have not concluded BPA is definitely dangerous to human health at normal exposure levels, use of BPA “remains controversial” according to the article.

Some disclosures and safe alternative programs are self-administered by consumer product manufacturers. For example, when you buy nail polish, you can look for the “5 free” label, signifying that the product does not contain any of five hazardous chemicals now found mostly in imported nail polishes.

Advocacy groups also investigate and certify products. For example, the “Skin Deep” database of the Environmental Working Group, at www.ewg.org/skindeep/, sets up a system for scoring products.

You can sign up for the California Department of Toxic Substances Control e-blasts and listserv on their website, https://dtsc.ca.gov/dtsc-e-lists/, to keep track of the latest chemical concerns and responses.

Another tool is the U.S. EPA’s “safer choice” label program. Their website has over 2,000 products for cleaning, car care and other uses with a label signifying ingredients “safer for human health and the environment.” See www. epa.gov/saferchoice.

ne thing can be said about this pandemic: It has forced event organizers to get creative. From GhostWalk’s all-virtual GhostWatch to drive-in concerts and performances to custom designed treats, people across the county have set out to prove that there’s more than one way to party. Fear not, Ventura County: This weekend is full of fun activities in celebration of fall, Halloween and Día de Los Muertos.

The High Street Broadcast Audio Theater

Ongoing hsbaudio.com The High Street Broadcast (HSB) has been bringing vintage-style radio shows to stage and airwaves since 2007. Original scripts performed by a troupe of actors, musicians and sound effect artists recreate the audio theater experience made popular during the “Golden Age” of radio, when thousands of riveted listeners tuned in for thrills, chills, laughs and entertainment.

While HSB has had to table its live stage productions in these pandemic times, the stories told through its podcast are ideal for enjoyment at home. Host and writer Ryan Neely has put together a selection of seasonal tales filled with Halloween spirit.

“Addison’s Library” features spooky stories and fairy tales as told from the “confines” of a secret library. A baleful hound prowls the hills of northeastern France in “The Devil Dog of Alsace-Lorraine” while a watchful scarecrow haunts the “Autumn Knoll.”

Some tales are best heard and not seen, allowing one’s own imagination to take flight. Gather the family ‘round, light some candles and partake in the oral tradition of ghostly storytelling with High Street Broadcast.

There are lots of fun things to see (which make for great Facebook photo for the Pumpkin photo opportunities, too): fall harvest decor; giant spiders, House at Underwood Family Farms. tractors and harvest baskets; the delightful pumpkin house. Wagon rides will takes visitors out to the fields to pick seasonal produce. The Animal Center (baby goats and chicks, ponies, sheep and more) is open, but rides, petting and feeding are not allowed at this time. On weekends, roaming entertainers will delight audiences . . . from a distance, of course.

Even with COVID-19 closures of some of Underwood’s many attractions, there’s still a lot to do here — and you won’t find a better spot for experiencing Ventura County’s ag tradition during this most magical time of year.

A few safety guidelines: Masks are required for ages 3 and up during check in/out, in the animal center, on wagon rides and in the markets. Visitors must maintain a minimum of six feet physical distance from others. Underwood Family Farms states that this is equivalent to two rows in the pick-your-own fields or a horse length distance.

Ghosts of the Past

The ever-popular PumpkinLiner is running trips (passengers will be socially distanced) to two locations for autumn-flavored fun. Passengers can choose the stop they prefer. One option is the Loose Caboose (free with train ticket), a garden center and gift shop offering pumpkins and other local produce, honey, nuts and more. Animals on site include koi, chickens and quail.

The other stop is Prancer’s Farm ($7 entry fee with discounts for train ticket holders) featuring a 10-acre pumpkin patch, farm animals, a barrel train, hay pyramid and more. Whichever location you choose, you’ll have about an hour to enjoy it. PumpkinLiner trips last a total of 2.5 hours; facial coverings and social distancing are mandatory. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on the train.

On the evening of Oct. 31, the railway has organized an eerily enjoyable Fright Night. This Halloween-themed mystery train experience starts with a ride to Loose Caboose, a boxed barbecue dinner served outside and a spooky (but safe!) murder mystery “game” involving monsters, murder and mayhem. It is rumored to be equal parts silly and scary, so prepare to be wildly entertained. The entire event lasts about 3.5 hours. As with the PumpkinLiner, masks and social distancing will be mandatory.

Whole lotta soul Shylah Ray Sunshine’s search for the soul connection

Well rounded” is one way to describe the voice of Shylah Ray Sunshine. Deep, full and resonant, it hints at the many roads and musical genres the Ojai-based singer/songwriter has traveled through. It has the impact and energy of rock and roll, a facility with rhyme and rhythm perfectly at home in hip-hop, an otherworldly quality that blends beautifully with spiritual and new age music and an earthy sensuality that’s perfect for blues and soul.

“I try to expose myself to as much as possible,” Sunshine says. And while she’s been happy to lend her talents to all of these musical expressions, it’s the journey toward the sound that reflects her own soul that has brought her the greatest success and satisfaction.

“There was music in my ancestry”

Canadian-born Sunshine grew up in a small town north of Toronto. Her family was not particularly musical, but they were talented.

“My mother and grandmother sang beautifully,” she contends.

For Sunshine, however, music was both a solace and a passion.

“I had a dysfunctional relationship with my mother,” she admits. “I used music as a type of therapy. I dissociated from anything going on in my life that was troubling.”

Musicians that influenced her include Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill (“Lauryn Hill changed my life”), Alanis Morrissette, Etta Davis, Christina Aguilera (“a tiny person with this huge voice”) and Erykah Badu — mostly women with “strong, feminine voices.”

“I could feel the depth and power of my voice,” Sunshine says — and she sought out others with the same.

While she is of Algonquin descent, she says that she didn’t grow up with a connection to her culture. “In the past . . . I didn’t really value or honor my lineage then as much as I do now.”

She found her way back through a group of friends that would participate in sweat lodge ceremonies and other practices.

“When I was exposed to those things through them, I could see there was music in my ancestry.”

She was on her own to explore this part of herself, though. She did research online and found recordings of songs, which she used to teach herself.

Southern Exposure

Sunshine came to the United States in 2005, originally just traveling through. By 2006, at the age of 20, she had moved to Los Angeles, where she met and married a touring musician, and became pregnant with her first child — a daughter, now 14. (She now has an 8-year-old as well.)

Getting pregnant at 20 “shifted the course of everything,” Sunshine says. She was still committed to music and songwriting, but had

to balance that with her desire to be a hands-on parent. It went against the grain: Sunshine notes that most women musicians had their children after they were established in their careers.

Rather than touring, she moved to Topanga Canyon and took up pursuits she could do while caring for a young child, teaching herself piano at 23 and then “songwriting followed.”

“That was the most interesting part of my journey by far,” says Sunshine.

Commercial success

In 2011, she moved to Ojai, where she continued writing and playing music. Her soul-searching lyrics and gospel-like voice found easy purchase in devotional and world music circles, and her 2012 EP, Earth Medicine Music, yielded the critically acclaimed single, “Existence,” which was used in a variety of advertisements, documentaries and podcasts — and earned her a Hollywood Music in Media Award nomination for Best Song with Message/ Social Impact.

Sunshine wasn’t aiming for the commercial market, but it has proven to be one opportunity to make money with her music.

“I could support myself writing songs for TV and commercials,” she explains. “It was definitely a factor.”

She also wowed live audiences at venues such as the Agape Spiritual Center in Culver City, the Temple of Intention in Mt. Shasta, California and Santa Barbara’s Lucidity Festival (where she was set to perform again this year on Nov. 6 before the event was canceled).

“I have a lot of flavor to bring”

Being part of the devotional music scene was one avenue for artistic expression, but Sunshine says that it wasn’t the full picture of herself as a singer or songwriter.

“I used to put myself in a position where I felt like I had an obligation to write music that was uplifting,” she explains. “Devotional music is very God-centered . . . I was very wrapped up in that scene when I first got to LA. Eventually,

I needed to break this mold a little bit . . . It wasn’t really honoring my whole truth.”

That truth was multifaceted, with soul, R&B and hip-hop mixed in with the new age and gospel stylings for which she originally became known.

“I have a lot of flavor to bring,” she says.

“My music has really shifted,” Sunshine continues. While her previous work was designed (in some ways) to make other people happy, her music today is closer to her own heart. “This is more for me.”

Soul Voice Singing™

While finding her own authentic voice, Sunshine discovered a gift for teaching. Now a sought-after vocal coach, she tries to help singers of all experience levels using a personalized program that she calls Soul Voice Singing.

Described on her website as a way “to help empower those who strive for learning how to speak and sing more effortlessly,” Soul Voice Singing reflects in some ways Sunshine’s own journey.

“What I’ve noticed over the years . . . the more experiences I’ve had . . . I’ve dropped into my voice.”

Moreover, she feels that she is continuously “dropping into the essence of soul in my voice.

I want people to access that soul in their voice.”

While it’s true that Sunshine has a very soulful voice, here “soul” means something different.

“It’s more about emotion and feeling. It’s more about the relationship that people have with their voice.”

Finding her rhythm

Through the years, she’s found that authentic musical expression is an ever-evolving experience: “What comes up for me a lot is my relationship to my music. There’s still a part of myself that’s finding what works for me.”

Sunshine has enjoyed playing in Ventura County, including a 2015-17 residency at Ojai’s Deer Lodge, but she’s had to look farther afield to play the music that best reflects her interests

and talents.

“There’s not a lot of R&B singing in this area,” Sunshine says, noting that she had to go to LA to find better opportunities. “I could feel my level of professionalism upgrading.”

As her talent grew, she also sought venues that could afford to pay her what she was worth, especially considering that she preferred playing with a full band.

“I’m not a solo singer/songwriter. It’s not just me and my keyboard up there.”

Currently, she’s keeping busy with vocal coaching (through Zoom), a number of collaborative projects and, as always, caring for her two daughters.

She’s also working on a new album, and hopes to release a single later this year or early in 2021.

“I’m really happy with how it sounds and feels,” says Sunshine. “It’s very fresh feeling.”

She would like to get more into the commercial and soundtrack circuit again, and has high hopes for these new songs. “These are radio quality and film quality songs. These would fit really well in films.”

Her path as a professional musician hasn’t followed the usual course. It took some time for her to find her voice, and her commitment to being a full-time parent put things such as touring on hold. And she’s recognizing the cyclical nature of her creative output: Some months she’s highly productive, while others she has more distractions.

“But,” emphasizes Sunshine, “[Music] is something that I desire all the time. I’d love to be touring and traveling . . . I’m learning how to accept that I have my own pattern. This is something I’m constantly in dialogue with myself about.”

Keeping those lines of communication open will only lead to greater journeys and better things. Because, after all, music is in her soul.

he Greek in Ventura Harbor is one of the first restaurants I visited when I moved to the area more than 20 years ago — and I have loved it ever since. There have been big, indulgent dinners with family and friends, where we feasted on spanakopita, succulent lamb, rich moussaka and more — sometimes, if we happened to hit it on a weekend night, while taking in a belly dancing performance. I’ve grabbed a light bite and drink before a harbor cruise, or even a nice lunch on a sunny day. Just when I thought I’d seen all that The Greek had to offer, I wandered in one weekend morning . . . and realized that they serve breakfast, too. The sun was shining, the ocean was glistening and it was still early enough to beat the brunch crowd. My husband and I decided to take a seat on the restaurant’s famously large patio (with great views) and check it out.

I’ve long appreciated The Greek’s bar staff, which can whip up a dynamite martini or Manhattan. So even though I’m picky about my Bloody Marys, I felt confident ordering one. Good call: perfect blend of spicy and tangy, well seasoned, a hint of lime. Not only was it a great drink . . . and a great way to start the morning . . . it was on special for just $5.50. Possibly the best deal in town.

After a few sips of tomatoey goodness, it was time to think about food.

The Greek’s traditional menu is pretty

My husband ordered the Santorini Sunrise Bowl: potatoes, cheese, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, red onions and peppers, all topped with two eggs over easy. Adding some slices of gyro meat — because gyros are one of our favorite things ever — he had a filling but

wholesome, Greek-adjacent breakfast.

All those fresh veggies added tons of flavor, the eggs were perfectly prepared (hard whites, soft yolks) and the gyro meat was a tasty treat on top. (I’m sure bacon would be lovely, too.)

Even though it was breakfast time, I found myself craving a gyro. So I split the difference and ordered the breakfast sandwich — which comes on a fresh, thick pita. It was filled with fluffy scrambled eggs, cheese, tomato, red onions and avocado. There’s an extra charge to add sausage or bacon; the waitress was happy to make that gyro meat for me. I highly recommend that others do the same — the seasoned, tender strips of gyro (80 percent beef and 20 percent lamb) go beautifully with eggs, and it satisfied that craving I had for Greek food. The breakfast potatoes served on the side were good, but proved to be too much for me.

Once we were done eating, we did what we usually do at The Greek: Gazed out at the boats in the harbor, savoring our drinks and enjoying the simple peace and pleasure of a flavorful meal enjoyed in a picturesque setting. For a brief time, the pandemic, the election and the stresses of everyday living blew away on the ocean breeze. I’m eager to find myself there again.

— Going Broke We humans are ever-failing self-disciplinarians, two-legged weasels talking ourselves into things we know we shouldn’t do. For example, there’s that saying, “Everything happens for a reason.” No, the fact that those $800 shoes are now $465 does not count as a reason.

Unfortunately, the more you behave

badly, the more disposed you are to keep behaving badly — that is, to develop a habit of behaving badly.

Habits are born on a microscopic level, through what might be called a conspiracy of brain cells. Typically, any action you take requires the triggering of thousands of these tiny cells, called neurons. They fire off electric signals to other neurons, ultimately messaging your body to get it to act.

Because even lifting your finger to pick your nose requires a massive army of neurons, the brain is an energy hog, guzzling more energy than any other organ. Evolution, on the other hand, is big on thrift, so it’s implemented energy efficiency measures that sometimes lead you to behave in counterproductive ways.

Whenever you repeat a behavior, retriggering the same army of brain cells, chemical changes occur that effectively wire these cellular troops together into a sort of collective action pack.

This puts you on automatic, so, for example, on day two in the Airbnb, you don’t have to search for the light switch or figure out how the dimmer works; you just unthinkingly hit the switch and crank the dimmer. The more you repeat a behavior, the more automatic

it becomes. You basically go into robozombie habit mode — mental autopilot — with nary a consult with your Department of Reasoning, which, in fact, gets shut out entirely from the process.

Obviously, there are good autobehaviors and bad autobehaviors, but behavior you robotically repeat despite adverse consequences (such as becoming a tent-dweller with fabulous shoes) is “compulsive.” Neuropsychiatry researcher Judy Luigjes and her colleagues define compulsivity as repeatedly feeling compelled to perform an act (and being unable to stop oneself) while at the same time “being aware” that the act conflicts with one’s “overall goals.”

Compulsive shopping is often motivated by a longing to escape uncomfortable emotions, for example, anxiety or stress. It has similarities with addiction disorders, observes behavioral economist Shahram Heshmat, such as a “buyer’s high,” a rush of excitement when purchasing an item. However, the relief from emotional discomfort is quickly replaced by guilt and remorse for the irresponsible spending, which can fuel a “vicious cycle”: the need for “another ‘fix,’ purchasing something else.”

To break the cycle, you need to

“protect long-term goals from shortterm consumption decisions,” Heshmat explains. This starts with recognizing your triggers: uncomfortable “negative” emotions like feeling hungry, angry, lonely, or anxious, which make you more likely to fling the future out the window to get that quick-fix buyer’s high.

Remind yourself regularly that uncomfortable feelings will not kill you. They’re also temporary. Make a pact with yourself that when you feel the urge to shop, you’ll instead acknowledge the underlying feelings you’re escaping, tell yourself you can handle a bit of feel-bad, and then do what you can to feel better, like calling up a friend. In case you get their voicemail, come up with other healthy diversions like taking a walk or streaming a trashy action flick.

Of course, what you can’t see or click on, you can’t buy. Stay off shopping websites, and wipe them from your computer by clearing your cache, cookies, and history. You might also prepare to padlock your phone in a box and set a timer for a day, or at least several hours.

To arm yourself with positive motivations to counter negative feelings,

prepare to reset your emotional clock from the uncomfortable “now” to the exciting possible future. Stock up mental pictures of the benefits of behaving in financially responsible ways, like a snapshot of you and your friends enjoying drinks at a beautiful condo you buy with your savings.

In time, as you stop responding to bad feelings by click-shopping your way to bankruptcy, the neural tentacles of your habit will weaken, as will the clutches of your compulsion.

You might also work up a little compassion for yourself for having it in the first place. Technology has made our lives vastly easier, but it’s also given us countless new ways to mess them up. Back in 1347, people were freaked about the bubonic plague, just like we are at the ‘rona, but they simply didn’t have the option of getting drunk at 2 a.m. and sending off a carrier pigeon with an ill-advised order for obscenely pricey shoes. ©2020, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved.
