Tackling Ventura County’s community cats

when it comes to reducing the overall population of cats and kittens.

Fostering is another important part of the equation. People always tell me that they can’t foster, because there is no way they would be able to give up such a perfect cat. The thing is, it’s not about us, it’s about saving lives. Remember the alternative: They would be in a shelter cage or on the street. With the unending flow of kittens and limited resources, tough choices have to be made. Due to lack of resources, terminating kittens in pregnant cats is practiced at most animal shelters, as the resources are needed for the animals that already exist.

Kittens as young as three months old may have to be TNR’d, as there is not enough time, space or ability to socialize them. The ideal window for the socialization of kittens is between four and eight weeks. Remember, these kittens are mostly born outdoors, so early human interaction is crucial.

So don’t just be a cat lover; be a foster.

Funding, free/low cost spay and neuter, TNR and fostering are the ways we can change the future for cats. Taking action is “preventable suffering” as we must do better for cats and kittens. I hope if you are reading this, and you feel touched by this story, you will be that somebody that takes action.

“The Hazardous Truth” Lead explosion investigator to present in Santa Paula

n Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021, Jeff Barry, a former investigator with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Major Fraud Division, will share with the public his experiences as the lead investigator into the cause, conspiracy and other criminal acts that led to an explosion, fire and chemical exposures at a wastewater disposal and treatment facility in Santa Paula in November 2014.

“As the lead investigator, I was professionally and personally invested in this incident and spent years uncovering the truth,” said Barry, responding via email to the Ventura County Reporter.

“There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of those that were permanently injured by something that could have been prevented.

I think it also took a toll on me emotionally. I can’t see a tanker truck on the freeway now without thinking about the case, or at least instinctively trying to get as far away from it as possible.”

Barry is coming back to Santa Paula from his home in Colorado without any compensation. When asked what he hopes the public takes away from his presentation, he referred to the need for changes in how wastewater facilities report to regulatory agencies about their operations, and the importance of making the evidence and reports associated with the investigation public.

“I encourage better transparency,” he said. “The District Attorney has the ability to make the investigation records easily accessible and available to the public, for example, on his website. Access to government records as important as this should not be complicated or burdensome. In fact, public access to government records is vital and gives people the tools to understand, actively participate, and help shape future public policy.”

He points to the fact that while records and search warrants are sealed during active investigations, prosecutions and trials, it has now been seven years since these events occurred.

“Much of the Santa Clara Waste Water investigation was never made public in a manner that is easily accessible. There was no public report. Grand jury hearings were behind closed doors (as required by law) and search warrants were sealed from public view (to protect the integrity of the investigation at the time)...

The defendants and corporations have since entered guilty pleas to a variety of criminal charges.”

Barry also pointed out that the Ventura County Superior Court has unsealed the records associated with the case.

“However, based on the volume of information — we are talking about tens of thousands of pages of evidence — the cost

to obtain, and the complexity in understanding them, I think it’s difficult for the average person to comprehend what happened.”

Barry’s presentation distills down the mountain of evidence and tells the story of the immediate hours, days and weeks after the explosion and fires, and the following months and years, as the layers of criminal activity were uncovered.

“My hope is that people who attend the presentation leave with a better understanding of the incident and steps we can take to prevent it from happening again.”

His investigation led to 71 charges against nine SCWW employees. All were indicted and pleaded guilty.

An event that could have been prevented

On Nov. 18, 2014, the community of Santa Paula was rocked by an explosion at a wastewater disposal facility called Santa Clara Waste Water on Mission Rock Road. The back of a vacuum truck exploded and was thrown across the facility. The vacuum truck was cleaning up a chemical spill at 3:45 a.m., a chemical that wasn’t supposed to be stored at that facility. When it mixed with another substance in the vacuum truck, the chemical reaction caused an explosion that also spread a mixture across the ground, coating buildings, tanks and wastewater and chemical storage bins called “totes” throughout the facility.

When firefighters responded, their boots caught on fire as they walked through a white, powdery substance on the ground. The tires of the fire engine ignited upon contact with the substance as well. The mixture dispersed by the initial explosion had now transformed into an incendiary substance that was combusting when disturbed. This reaction ultimately led to the secondary fire event, when much of the facility, including plastic totes filled with chemicals, all went up in flames, sending a toxic cloud into the air. The Todd Jail and a nearby school were ordered to shelter in place, a local emergency was declared for 60 days.

Firefighters began to have trouble breathing and were transported to area emergency rooms. All the while, the operators of Santa Clara Waste Water told investigators that all they handled was sewage.

Barry was one of the first to see the aftermath. He moved quickly to interview dozens of people and would ultimately write and execute search warrants. His investigation created tens of thousands of pages of evidence that demonstrated how the facility’s owners, with some employees, conspired to break the law and lie to investigators, putting everyone on site and the surrounding public at risk.

Ventura County inspectors had conducted a scheduled inspection of the site the week prior to the incident. The illegally kept chemical, called PetroMax, had been stored onsite for at least several months, in an unmarked, locked storage container. All chemical storage containers are required to be clearly labelled. County inspectors failed to notice the locked, unlabeled container.

RI-NU Services LLC has submitted an application to renew the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) under which the previous operator, Santa Clara Waste Water, operated.

RI-NU operations will consist of accepting for disposal “wastewater, such as, but not limited to, porta-potty waste, septic tank waste, and oilfield wastewater...The wastewater would be treated onsite to separate solids and liquids, consolidated and then trucked to off-site permitted disposal facilities,” according to the permit application.

The public can attend a Nov. 8 community meeting held by the Ventura County Planning Division to provide input and feedback on the application, environmental document and county-proposed mitigations.

n Thursday, Oct. 14, about 45 people protested outside of a public meeting being held by Southern California Gas Company at the Museum of Ventura County in Ventura. The group staged a “die-in” representing what they say are impacts from the company’s gas compressor station in West Ventura on North Olive Street and associated with the company’s planned facility expansion for the site.

The marchers moved in a circle and then fell to the ground.

They wore signs around their necks indicating who they were or represented, including teachers, students and those with various ailments. One member of the group, wearing a hard hat, safety vest and representing a SoCalGas employee, stoked three pillars containing dry ice into making a white mist.

“As is typical with SoCalGas, the fumes continue to fly,” said Liz Campos, chair of the Westside Community Council, who narrated the protest action. “It’s also important to note that even the workers are affected by the leaching gas.”

As the community became aware of SoCalGas plans to expand the facility, the community also learned of the periodic “venting” of gas that takes place at the facility. Notification of local residents is not required when such venting occurs.

Campos referred to a “gas blow out on July 3” when it took firefighters several hours to determine the source of a gas odor noticed by residents and businesses along Ventura Avenue. Eventually it was determined to have come from the SoCalGas facility.

SoCalGas officials reported to the city of Ventura that occasionally the facility does have to “vent” gas, and confirmed it is not required to report such venting, and provided a list of reported venting events.

Members of the public had to check in with SoCalGas and due to pandemic-related restrictions, a maximum of 35 people were allowed into the meeting area at a time.

At one point in the protest, the group marched up the stairs of the museum entrance after K.C. Rodriguez, a member of the local Barbareño/Ventureño Band of Mission Indians, confronted three men from SoCalGas who stood at the entrance.

“You’re making teachers sick, you’re making children sick,”

shouted Rodriguez.

The protest was organized by the Westside Clean Air Coalition, a group of local organizations and residents who are fighting to stop the expansion.

The California Public Utilities Commission has jurisdiction over utilities projects, including those by SoCalGas. After skipping a year of trick-or-treating, many kids are eager to collect candy, But this year, kids aren’t the only ones who will be wearing masks.

Halloween activities have also returned, nearly all located outdoors. Events include a “terror trail” at the Ventura County “Fear” Grounds; a GhostWalk centered at the Santa Paula Theater Center; a “skele-fun” event at America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College; and car-based “trunk or treat” events at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center (which took place Oct. 23), another one at the Simi Valley Elks Lodge (Oct. 24), and a third one on “haunted” High Street in Moorpark on Oct. 31.

Some outdoor parties include costume contests. Oct. 30, at 12:30 p.m., Ventura Harbor Village hosts a dog costume contest celebrating “Howl-o-ween.” Oct. 31, 5-8 p.m. at Camarillo’s Community Center Park, Pleasant Valley Recreation and Parks District will coordinate pumpkin painting, lawn games, food trucks, an outdoor Trick-Or-Treat Village, and costume contests on an outdoor stage for four categories of age groups.

Whether trick-or-treating, attending an event, or entering a costume contest, consider reducing waste this Halloween. The most ubiquitous waste of the holiday, candy wrappers, can be recycled only through extreme measures, such as reuse for crafts or mailing with other items in a “Zero Waste Box” to Terracycle, with a $113 payment.

It is easier to manage two other wastes of the holiday, costumes and pumpkins.

Costumes

Cheap, plastic, disposable costumes may look adequate in pictures online or printed on costume packaging, but take a closer look. Does the costume just look good because it is on an impossibly gorgeous model or a super cute kid? Usually, disposable costumes look like what they are . . . cheap imported junk destined for a landfill on Nov. 1.

Instead, consider a durable, reusable costume to look better and wear again in another year or pass on to someone else. For past Halloween celebrations, the Camarillo Family YMCA was a center for costume exchanges, but due to COVID-related restrictions, the YMCA is neither collecting nor re-selling costumes this year. Instead, shop at a thrift store, some of which have a large inventory of costumes they have been saving since last year’s canceled festivities. For example, the Council Against Household Violence thrift store in downtown Ventura had three full racks of costumes on display against their front window last weekend.

Maria Provenzano (www.fromscratchwithmaria.com), a lifestyle expert who specializes in do-it-yourself decorations, recently appeared on a television talk show describing clever Halloween costume ideas. Her most simple projects involve “upcycling” old face masks.

A black mask can be turned into a cat mask with just six white pipe cleaners, a piece of pink felt, scissors, and a glue gun. Cut the pipe cleaners into whiskers and glue them, three to a side, jutting out from the lower part of the mask, then cut

a pink triangle nose from the felt, and glue it at the intersection of the pipe cleaners.

A black headband with black pipe cleaners bent into two triangle-shaped ears and twisted around to attach to the headband can supplement the look.

Pumpkins

Pumpkins, including seeds, may be recycled in your curbside yard waste cart. Compost facility operators raise compost pile temperatures over 130 degrees for several days, preventing seeds from sprouting in finished compost. Composters reach these temperatures regularly anyway to kill weed seeds. Pumpkins, like fruit from landscape trees, are an exception to the general rule against food in yard waste carts in Ventura County.

Even better than putting your pumpkin in your yard waste cart is to compost it yourself in your own compost pile or worm box, saving the seeds for replanting next year. DO NOT put pumpkins in your garbage cart if you have attached self-adhesive plastic rhinestones, glue-gunned beads, studs, rivets or other unnatural decorations. No one wants Halloween pumpkin bling contaminating the compost of their spring flower beds.

Scaring people is all about timing

T

he Reign of Terror (ROT) Haunted House has existed in one form or another since 2000. Originally a Halloween tradition at the Thousand Oaks home of Bruce Stanton, in its 20-plus year history it has grown to become one of the area’s largest and most famous seasonal attractions. The sets are as elaborate as anything you might find at, say, Universal Studios . . . and possibly more frightening. Thousands flock to its location at the Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks every weekend in October to walk through its complex of over 100 rooms covering thousands of square feet, getting terrified out of their wits with every step. Because for some, life is no fun without a good scare.

This is a busy time of year for the haunted house master builder, but Stanton was gracious enough to answer some questions for the Ventura County Reporter via email, and share a little bit about ROT and the art of scaring.

Are you from Ventura County originally?

No. I was born in Culver City, raised in Danville, California. Currently I live in Moorpark after living in Thousand Oaks for 20 years.

What brought you to this area?

I moved to Ventura County in 1997. I loved the community: All the benefits of Los Angeles with a slower pace of living.

What is your background? How did you learn to do all of those amazing things that we see at Reign of Terror?

Most importantly, we can utilize larger props because we have better access to the space. When we were upstairs, everything had to fit through a standard single door of 36 inches.

Let’s talk about the crew that helps you build Reign of Terror. How many people are involved?

There are six people that create the Reign of Terror. All people just like myself that love to be creative and love Halloween.

How long does it take you to put this together?

I am a sales rep in the dental implant business; that has been my career for 25 years. The haunted house is just a passion. That is why we are a nonprofit, raising money for the teen center and the theater group of the Conejo Recreation and Park District.

The haunted house never stops; it is a year round operation. From planning to building and construction, it can take up to a year.

When did you first start creating haunted attractions?

We don’t build the haunted house to just be scary. We want everyone to have a great time.”

Reign of Terror started at my house in 2000.

What were the early attractions like?

Quality and detail has been the goal from day one. Although it used to be smaller, the quality and the detail were the same. While we don’t use much of it, there are still some items and walls that we used at my house 20 years ago.

How did your art form develop into Reign of Terror?

How did it grow and evolve?

The big difference is our budget. We have gone from $5,000 a year in the early years to well over $50,000 now.

When did you move to the Janss Marketplace?

We moved to the Janss in 2009, into a 4,000-square-foot shoe store. The next year we moved to the 31,000-square-foot space above Gold’s Gym. We were there for 10 years, and in 2020 we moved to the old Marshalls space, which is where we are now (about the same size).

Do you like haunted attractions yourself?

What drives you to make something so scary?

We are all big fans of haunted houses and we travel the country to see the best. We love to see what other people are doing. It is not to be scarier, but to be overall better.

Do you watch a lot of horror films? What are your favorites?

I love the classic horror: Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

When you’re designing a haunted attraction, what kinds of challenges do you face? What are the biggest problems, and how do you solve them?

For years we just kept building because we had so much space.

Now the challenge is removing the old and creating the new. We always want to up our game and make things more impressive and memorable. Again, being on the ground floor, we have better opportunities to make this happen

Have you ever created some aspect of Reign of Terror that didn’t go over well? Maybe something that people found comical or goofy rather than scary? Or something so frightening or upsetting that you thought, “hmm . . . that might have been a mistake”?

Fortunately NO. And I give thanks to the team and our research.

Scaring people is all about timing, and timing in the real world can be a challenge. Because we have grown, some nights are a lot busier than others, so those scares might not be as effective.

What are some of the most memorable reactions you’ve had to Reign of Terror?

When people fall to the ground. It never gets old.

How different is the Reign of Terror from year to year?

We make sure that we change and add enough that the super fan will be happy. That is our goal. The haunted house is so huge that a person could go through three times and see new things every time.

Half the people who attend the haunted house have never been before.

Do you have a way to gauge what is and isn’t scary or disturbing (in general) for people who walk through the Reign of Terror? What do you find that attendees respond to the most?

We always laugh about how some of the easiest things are the most memorable. The black room with the dots on the walls scares more people than our most elaborate $5,000 sets.

Where do you get the inspiration for new designs and setups?

We have 10 unique themes and we try to add new themes so the

What’s new for Reign of Terror attendees this year?

The new attraction in Unhallowed Ground.

Level with me: Just how scary is this?

That is an impossible question. We don’t build the haunted house to just be scary. We want everyone to have a great time. And if that is you getting scared, that is great. If that makes you laugh at the detail and the sets, then we are happy with that as well.

What’s your favorite thing about building the Reign of Terror attraction?

Seeing our ideas come to life. I can honestly say that every time we finish a new set of a new room, it always looks better than I first imagined.

What are some things about Reign of Terror that you might want to share with our readers that we haven’t touched on here?

Our biggest goal is to make sure that everyone has a great time. If that is scaring them, making them laugh or amazing them with our detail and creativity, that is our goal.

Someone who does this for a living must be really hard to scare. What, if anything, frightens you?

That is not true at all. The cheapest scare is the air cannon that blasts air at your ankles; gets me all the time. Scaring people is all about building up anticipation. The more your anticipation builds, the easier it is to scare someone. It is all about timing.

What are you most looking forward to on Halloween night?

Figuring out what we will do next and getting ready for our super popular Ho Ho Ho Horror Christmas event. Halloween is becoming way more year round than ever before.

“We are human beings together” Diane Macklin brings messages of hope and connection to Ojai Storytelling Festival

n times like these, when cacophony is the norm, we need stories. Specifically, stories that connect with our lives in a way that promotes empathy, understanding and, if possible, healing.

“In this time, it is so crucial that we learn to listen to each other with depth and width, in a way that we can see how someone else’s story can fit into ours,” says Diane Macklin, one of America’s most prominent storytellers who will participate in the 20th Annual Ojai Storytelling Festival Oct. 28-31.

“Right now, things are a little — well, problematic in our society,” continues Macklin, speaking by phone from her Baltimore home. “And it comes from not being acknowledged, which is the most isolating thing we can do to one another. The feeling that no one’s hearing you is the quickest way to feel alone, or angry.”

Which is why, says Macklin, “story-listening” is as important as storytelling.

“It’s having the capacity to say, ‘We want to know your story, to find out what’s going on with you,’” she says.

“That’s what storytellers model, to look at the culture and the community, to speak into that space and show how we can connect to each other in a positive way. And when we do that, we realize there is space for everyone.”

That philosophy — especially the desire “to treat each other better” — frames Macklin’s own approach to storytelling, which includes song, dance and “lots of energy,” she laughs.

“At the core, I am about the connection we have to one another,” she continues. “And that’s the purpose of storytelling: to assist in helping people realize how we are human beings together, how we can show kindness to each other. So my stories have themes of teamwork, caring, understanding, wanting people to rise up to be their best selves.”

Such a role and responsibility, Macklin adds, is both exhilarating and humbling. “I’ve spent the past 20 years living this very ancient art form that is the core and atom of human existence. Storytelling is the language of the entire human race, a shared experience by all.”

Born and raised in New York’s Hudson Valley, Macklin was between her junior and senior years at Vassar when she attended an event featuring storyteller-artist Tracy Leavitt, which ultimately influenced her choice of livelihood.

“I was just enchanted at how Tracy could tell stories that connected to an important part of each one of us,” Macklin recalls. She joined the Hudson Valley Storytelling Guild and

connected with “a great cluster of people who fostered my development in the art of storytelling — mainly, to let the story become a part of me.”

Earning her master’s degree from Simmons University in Boston, Macklin made a living as an administrative coordinator for a nonprofit and teaching English and social studies in private and public schools.

“But in 2000,” she says, “I said to myself that storytelling needs to be more part of who I am. So I prayed, took a leap of faith, and devoted myself to doing it full time.”

She was also influenced by Mother Mary Carter Smith, founder of the National Association of Black Storytellers.

“They spoke a language I didn’t know,” Macklin says, “different sounds and rhythms, more animated, and a dynamic interaction and relationship between audience and storytellers, where both are on the same plane, with give and take.”

Creepy Comedy Club

Ventura Harbor Comedy Club is making the most of Halloween weekend with three special events.

On Friday, Oct. 29, the late-night cabaret Moonlight Follies takes over the stage to present Lydia’s Night Circus, an adults-only burlesque and variety show touted as “the sexiest show on Earth.” It will feature a cast of stars such as Veronica Velvet, Miss Tosh, Angie Cakes, Vixen DeVille and more. Lots of music, laughter and more in store, starting at 10 p.m.

For the more theatrical minded, the Fright Night Murder Mystery Dinner Show is the ticket. Taking place on Saturday, Oct. 30, a performance cast will act out parts centered around a murder mystery and drop clues in an interactive whodunnit that leaves the detective work to the audience. A meal is included, and costumes are encouraged. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.

Drag By the She Sunday Brunch is a regular act at Ventura Harbor, but this year, it will take place on Halloween proper — and this edition promises to be fabulously funny, eerily entertaining and devilishly delicious (thanks to the cuisine provided by nearby Copa Cubana). Hosted by Ms. Pam Cakez and featuring the talents of Felony Dodger, Tiffany Vogue, Aqua, Samara Paris Sin and Elektra LaKill. Doors open at 11 a.m.; the show itself starts at 12 p.m.

Dance ’Til You’re Dead

Downtown Ventura’s Main Street Stage 22 —

will have attendees dancing in the streets (literally) on Friday, Oct. 29, for its Halloween Dance Party, which starts at 6 p.m.

The Barrelhouse Wailers perform at The Grape — formerly Squashed Grapes, and in a new location at 2733 East Main Street in Ventura — on Saturday, Oct. 30, and swing dancers always kick up their heels to this hot jazz band, whether it’s a holiday or not. Feel like cutting a rug before the trick-or-treaters start roaming? On Sunday, Oct. 31, Tony’s Pizzaria is converting its ’80s Beach Party to an ’80s Halloween Party, with tribute band Dork throwing down infectious dance favorites from the era of shoulder pads and neon.

Festivities start at 2 p.m., and there will be prizes for best 1980s-inspired costumes.

Several local bars will be hosting Halloween parties this weekend.

Kick things off Friday night, Oct. 29, at The Grape. Co and Company present “Season of the Witch,” with sultry jazz vocalist Colene Riffo backed by an A-list band. Remember to wear a costume! The party starts at 7 p.m.

The Keynote Lounge in Ventura has DJ AVG spinning for its Halloween Party on Saturday, Oct. 30, starting at 9 p.m. Also on Saturday, Rock and Roll Pizza (at Harley’s Bowl in Simi Valley, on Cochran) will host a Halloween Costume Party with three tribute bands playing music by Mötley Crüe, Alice Cooper and KISS, 8-11:30 p.m.

If you prefer an early-bird monster mash, head over to MadeWest Brewing in Ventura (Donlon Street location), which has a “Haunted West” party on tap 7-10 p.m.

Leashless Brewing in Downtown Ventura gets into the spirit even earlier, with Stone Fly’s Halloween Party kicking off at 6 p.m.

It’s all about the costumes at Paddy’s Bar and Lounge in Ventura. On Halloween night, Oct. 31, the popular bar hosts a “Who’s Your Paddy” costume contest, with $500 in cash prizes for the best costume. Up in Ojai, Topa Topa Brewing will be hosting an all-day costume party, 12 p.m.-10 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 30: Come dressed up and the brewery will give you a treat.

anta Paula’s Glen Tavern Inn is as famous for its history as its contemporary charms. The Tudor Revival building, built in 1911, has hosted wealthy socialites and Hollywood stars, as well as gamblers, prostitutes, bootleggers and other unsavory characters . . . and has also gained fame as one of Ventura County’s most haunted locales.

My first time reviewing Enzo’s, the hotel’s onsite restaurant, was six years ago, where I discussed the inn’s haunted legacy as much as the food. I found myself here again when I popped in with friends for a nightcap after GhostWalk. The cocktails were so tasty and the atmosphere so warm and cultured, we were all enchanted. I vowed to return for a full meal. A new chef joined the team a year ago and revised the menu, and a new manager recently came on staff. Now seemed like the perfect time to revisit this historic hotel.

The night my family and I had dinner at Enzo’s, we kept our senses tuned for spectral visitations. What we found was that the environment itself continues to echo with the ghosts of a time gone by. This early-20th-century grande dame has ambience aplenty, with her dark interior, plush furniture, mood lighting and sumptuous draperies. My teenagers, who have grown up with gastropubs and taquerias, both commented on how “fancy” Enzo’s was, and they’re right: You don’t find much of that Belle Époque-style elegance these days. I love baked pasta, and eggplant, so the olive oil dipping sauce. We would consume eggplant parmesan was a no-brainer for me three baskets before the meal was through.

Perhaps a mistake, as our portions were quite (although I was tempted by the lasagna). The dish was more than I could eat. Large slices large. Be sure to arrive with an appetite!

The side salads that came out first were of eggplant, breaded and fried, were layered nearly meals in themselves. Big bowls of light- with sauteed mushrooms, buried in a rich mar-

inara, topped with mozzarella and baked to a melty deliciousness. The eggplant was perfectly cooked and tender, enveloped in a nice, crisp breading, and the mushrooms were divine.

The marinara was surprisingly good — thick, smooth and garlicky with an earthy (not tangy) tomato flavor that lingered — and as delicious with the focaccia as with the eggplant. My husband’s chicken parmesan was similar, with a juicy chicken breast pounded thin and fried.

The roasted potatoes, asparagus and carrots on the side were a tasty touch. Whether you prefer your parm meat-based or vegetarian, I highly recommend Enzo’s version.

And in fact, I recommend Enzo’s, period.

Sufficiently refined for a special occasion meal, but unfussy enough to feel as though you can come as you are. The food is delicious, and offered in large enough quantities that you’re likely to have a dynamite lunch the next day.

The ambience is simply beautiful and sure to impress. And the old-school bar serves up no-fuss, old-school standards with aplomb (try the margarita or the old fashioned).

Dining at Enzo’s is an opportunity to simultaneously savor top-notch Italian cuisine, a graceful atmosphere and a slice of local history. There really isn’t another place in the county like it.

In case you’re wondering, no phantoms made their presence known during our visit.

But I definitely intend to make this elegant affair a regular haunt, so who knows who (or what) might join me some other time.
