because, as I’ve observed, those usually don’t end too well.” The president has reached the point that his own party cannot have a civil argument over policy because of his immature outbursts. This never would have been the case with either Bush presidency or Bill Clinton. Even Barack Obama kept his party on his side when his polls were dipping in the 40 percent area. Even though Cornyn sees Trump as a political liability, he’s still trying to maintain some civility and a lifeline by suggesting he’s nicer in private.

he quality of local schools impacts property values and adds to community character and vibrancy. Officials elected to school district boards manage millions in taxpayer dollars for the vital job of educating students. Ventura Unified School District (VUSD) employs about 1,300 certificated employees and 850 classified staff members, making it one of the largest employers in the area, with a budget of about $200 million. It is governed by a five-member elected board. Two candidates are seeking the seat in Area 3: Jackie Moran, a mother and local realtor, who was elected to an at-large position and is running for the first time with area voting, and Amy Yamamoto Callahan, a mother, educator and education consultant. In a Sept. 11, 2020, forum hosted by the Midtown Ventura Community Council and moderated by David Maron, Callahan and Moran responded to community questions.
Experience, literacy gaps in the spotlight
Explaining why she entered the race, Callahan said, “I was tapped on the shoulder” because of a “lack of experience that was being exhibited” by her opponent. Reflecting on Moran’s four years on the board, Callahan posited, “What really has been accomplished?” She added that Moran is “professining things that are just not true.” “Experience matters,” said Moran about why she should be elected, touting her four years on the board and serving on the California School Board Association for the district. Asked about “literacy gaps” in the district related to differences in socioeconomic status, Callahan charged the district with failing to address literacy with English language learners. “We need to be looking at the data . . . [it is a fact] that there is not a single English learner at Ventura High School that has” tested as proficient in English, she said. “It starts with leadership, it starts with caring that every student” achieves literacy. She said the library must reflect that aim and should “mirror the diversity” of students and what they are seeing in “the world around them.” She said the district doesn’t have adequate “baseline” assessments to track student progress. “Regardless of what Amy is saying . . . we have great markers,” said Moran. “All kids are tested and identified. This is not a specific child [but an] all-child issue, any child falling behind needs resources.” Callahan pointed to her goal of bringing to the district a literacy program that is designed to ensure all students, including English language learners, are grade proficient by the end of the third grade — a program being used in other areas of the state and nation. Moran said issues in learning need to be indentured “very early, rather than waiting until third grade” and that resources needed to be put in teachers’ hands early, claiming that the district has “made great progress and it’s charted.”
School bond measures
Both candidates agreed that Measure H should be approved as it renews necessary funding for work on district facilities, and they both agreed that the district needs to pass a new bond measure for additional funding, with the caveat that due to the pandemic now is not the time to ask the community to pass a bond.
Reopening the schools
Both Callahan and Moran expressed support for students getting back on campus when it’s safe to do so, but they disagreed on the best and safest way to reopen. “We were working really hard with” our committee “through summer to figure out how we would reopen,” said Moran. The district came
up with a hybrid model, with slight differences between elementary and grades six to 12. She described the “A-B format for elementary” as a kind of shift program, with group A going to campus for three hours and group B going for the other three hours each day. For middle and high schools, cohorts of students would attend in person on different days. Moran says the plans are designed to “keep exposure down,” and the district is preparing with “ a lot of PPE.” But Callahan countered that the committee did not include outside experts and the state is developing best practices that differ from the district’s plans. “The A-B model is not being looked at as the best, specifically because of safety,” said Callahan. You have to “think about cleaning and supplies.” She said others in education “haven’t found that [approach] the most successful. We need to “make sure our committees are not just internal committees,” and said the district needed to reach out to experts across the state for “best practices” that use a “pod-sized” approach.
Charter schools
“Unlike many school board members, I am not opposed to charters,” said Moran. She pointed out that students don’t all learn the same and having options is beneficial. “I think public school offers amazing things . . . I think we can compete fairly with all of them.” “I’m a proponent of choice,” said Callahan. “I’m a proponent of public education. [We] need to make sure that charters are given an equal handshake here in Ventura County,” they are a “viable option in public education.”
Improving student achievement
Moran said that when she was first elected, the VUSD school board broke up the curriculum and instruction department into three departments, each with a new administrative head. “One for overseeing the whole thing, one for elementary, one for six-12 . . . it really became important during the pandemic” by making it easier to develop distance learning plans. She emphasized the need to identify students who are struggling in elementary school and get them “resources that they need” to ensure they don’t fall behind, and for middle and high school students to create “pairings with community college” so that they “come out not just with A to G [requirements] able to go to college, [but also with] real world experience.” Callahan pressed that the district is not currently doing enough to ensure equal student achievement is possible. “We need to take student achievement seriously,” she said, noting that effort would be “reflected in our LCAP,” or Local Control and Accountability Plan. “We do not have an indicator . . .
a universal screener.” She said the district does not have a starting point from which to assess students. “So how are we able to track student achievement without having some of these metrics? As a community we really [need] to look at literacy, look at math, as our two core components. Right now we are not competing.”
Position on school resource officers
“Is there a need right now for school resource officers?” asked Callahan, adding that a conversation needs to take place “in partnership” with the Ventura Police Department, and that student assistant program counselors need to be considered as an alternative, with an eye to “restorative justice.” “I am on the subcommittee for that role,” said Moran. She called the school officers “amazing” and explained that they must apply for the position and go through a rigorous vetting process. “They are parents of kids in our district, they love our students, they are good mentors.” Moran emphasized the officers “are not there to police our kids,” but rather to “make sure they are safe and feel safe.” She said the officers are “good with restorative justice practices” and conduct “outreach to communities of color.”
Potential budget cuts
A question was posed about what programs could be cut in the event of major budget impacts. Both Moran and Callahan agreed that the district has to ensure staff positions are protected, but neither candidate answered the question. Moran plans to continue lobbying at the state and federal level for continued funding. “We have not had the horrific decline that we thought we were going to see,” due to federal funding assistance. She said “85 percent [of our budget] goes towards our staff; I don’t see a way to cut teachers. I don’t see a way to cut janitors.”
Vision for the future
While both candidates agreed that the immediate priority is students getting safely back on campus, their 5-10 year visions for the district were dramatically different. Moran said she envisioned a trend toward smaller class sizes, largely due to online learning and the technology capabilities developed by the district during the pandemic. She’s “very confident [the] data [will] show a huge difference.” Callahan said a “roadmap” is needed. The district needs “to be taking into account diversity and looking at addressing equity and access issues.” She said a plan needs to have “assigned metrics involved,” and a “functioning board, functioning cabinet. Making sure we have goals and metrics specifically identified around literacy,” to help close the achievement and equity gaps at the local schools.
Changing racist names of schools
When presented with a question about whether a school’s name should be changed if it’s racist or otherwise problematic, both candidates appeared to support change — although Callahan appeared more emphatic about it. “Of course they should be renamed,” said Callahan. “I feel firmly about it . . . many Venturans feel that as well. it’s just what we need to do.” Moran noted that community input and “all voices” must be part of the process when renaming or rebranding public property. She proposed that a committee with public input could be formed to make a recommendation to the board, for a “community-led approach.”
Ethnic Studies
The candidates were asked about whether they support ethnic studies being part of the curriculum. Both support it. Moran touted a plan she said the district developed, but Callahan challenged that assertion, pointing to state legislation that requires ethnic studies in high school. “We are ahead of the curve on this one,” said Moran. She said an ethnic studies committee worked with a “friend” of hers at UCLA and other leaders to put together a year-long proposal that is now a high school graduation requirement. But she said that this committee plans to do more and embed it in K-12. “There is more that we can do. I don’t think the VUSD authored [the curriculum]; it came through A to G requirements” from the state, Callahan said. She also emphasized that in addition to curriculum shifts, “systemic change around bias and race in our school systems” is needed to really address the inequities.
School of choice
Ventura Unified has approved the School of Choice program. The state allows a district to designate itself as such, which allows families to select the best school in the district for their children. Families are not bound to their neighborhood school. “I don’t believe in boundaries,” said Moran. “We would be able to have our kids apply to any school they want to.” She said different specialities at schools will “attract different people,” creating a “stellar opportunity” for the student and the district. Callahan also supports School of Choice and said the district can go farther and develop an “academy . . . linking to the workplace,” that would foster “different career pathways. n Oct. 14, the two candidates for California’s 26th Congressional District articulated their views and positions on various topics at a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters and California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI). The incumbent, Rep. Julia Brownley (D), has been representing the district since 2013. Her seat, which covers most of Ventura County, is being challenged by Republican Ronda-Baldwin Kennedy, a local attorney. Saying that the forum provides a platform for the “discourse we all need for our democracy to flourish,” Dr. Erika Beck, president of CSUCI, welcomed the candidates and thanked moderator David Maron. She offered that the information provided at forums provides “knowledge in service of the common good.”
Impact of COVID-19 a hot topic
As expected, the pandemic and economy dominated the discussion. Brownley said the pandemic is currently the “biggest challenge” and that she will continue advocating for pandemic relief bills. She noted that the current proposed bill is required in order to get the country back on track and to actually save the “life of our democracy.” She listed accomplishments with the Women Veteran’s Task Force and a committee on the climate crisis, which produced a recent report on the “existential threat of climate change.” She pointed to work she does specifically for the county in D.C., like funds for dredging harbors, supporting the port and naval base, as well as the brand-new veterans health care clinic to open next year in the county. Kennedy said she’d be part of a “new generation of Congress” if elected and would work at crossing the aisle to end a culture in Washington that is “so divisive that nothing gets done.” She said the pandemic “has devastated” the local economy with businesses closing and families being divided. She said she supports a relief package, but one that directs money straight to local businesses and individuals instead of getting funneled through “mismanaged states” that will continue to “mismanage” the relief funds. “We need to safely open businesses and open schools,” said Kennedy. “The cure is worse than the disease.” She said that not only has the response to the pandemic resulted in “countless” businesses closing but also a “high range of suicides.” She said rapid testing has to be available for people and when they test negative, they need to “go back to work and back to school.” The “coronavirus is dangerous” but there is a “better way to handle it.” Brownley nodded to Asian countries that are mostly back to nor-

She said a national plan is needed that involves testing, contact tracing, isolation and treatment and that getting a hold on the virus will allow reopening community by community. Kennedy said the top issue related to future outbreaks is avoiding “shutting the economy down,” saying the “number one priority” is that the economy “stays open, that businesses aren’t closed.” She suggested that better “clean practices” and “normal hygiene” would prevent a lot of people from getting COVID-19. People are “tired of hearing about Nancy Pelosi and Donald Trump,” said Kenndy. “It’s [like] a Bloods and Crips war with the American people caught in the middle . . . We need to come together.”
Racial and social inequality
“As a Black woman in America with two Black sons, I understand the inequalities,” said Kennedy, pointing out that the district has never elected a Black woman. “That tells you something. I am the great great granddaughter of runaway slaves.” She agreed that there needs to be reform in the justice system. “I work in the justice system . . . We don’t need a band aid,” referring to reparations, but opportunities to build “generational wealth . . . George Floyd Justice in Policing Act as a “positive step” at the federal level. That legislation would prohibit no-knock warrants, restrict use of deadly force and limited qualified immunity. She did note, however, that “sadly, the Senate is unwilling to” consider the act. Kennedy doesn’t think reparations are the best way to bring equity to the nation. “I prefer to see my children have equal opportunity, equal education . . . to own their own business.” She did point out that some large corporations today can trace their “wealth back to slavery.” She likes the idea of opportunity zones as a form of reparation, but does not think that welfare is effective and in fact said it creates situations that foster women becoming single mothers. “Single Black mothers . . . that happens for a reason.” Kennedy said the welfare system is designed to not allow for a “two-parent home.” She has a plan that would allow people to qualify for a home loan based on rental history rather than credit score. “Reparations [are] something that Congress needs to address,” Brownley countered. She would like to see “wealth-building opportunities” developed that include addressing “racial disparities in education” and housing. Kennedy did seek to distance herself a bit from the top Republican, President Donald Trump, saying she would be an independent congressperson representing Ventura County if elected. She suggested, as a way to cut the national debt, that Congress “needs to cut their salaries, cut their retirements,” and institute term limits and be on the Affordable Care Act. When opposing views come together Two groups converge, police investigating by Kimberly Rivers

he Ventura Police Department is investigating events that transpired following the interaction between two groups on Sunday, Oct. 11, in front of Ventura City Hall. In what was first reported by local Indigenous people as an intentional targeting may in fact be a meeting of two perspectives that have been clashing across the country.
Two groups gather
Around the noon hour on Sunday, Oct. 11, two groups were gathering in different parts of town. One group was made up of Indigenous people, who joined together around noon at the triangle area on Poli St. in front of Ventura City Hall near where the St. Junipero Serra statue previously stood. They were gathering prior to Indigenous People’s Day (Oct. 12) to sing songs and commemorate the day with a group photograph. Also on Sunday, around 11:30 a.m., a group of local residents came together in the WinCo parking lot in Telephone Plaza across town. The group had been gathering every Sunday for several weeks prior, meeting up for a weekly vehicle caravan to drive across Ventura — including in Downtown — in support of their views. As the Indigenous group was wrapping up its event, attendees began to hear honking. Turning toward the sounds, they saw a row of trucks heading east on Poli St. Many of the trucks were flying flags — American flags and some flags in support of President Donald Trump. Some drivers of the trucks were honking and waving, as they had been doing prior to reaching that location. Some of the drivers also shouted various comments. While some were innocuous, a few were derogatory. “Savages” and other offensive remarks can be heard on various video recordings. Some of the Indigenous people present also shouted back and raised their hands.
Opposing perspectives clash
The Indigenous people in the park experienced the honking and shouting as intimidation and harassment. The drivers say that they were simply drawing attention to their caravan and promoting their views. “We saw a bunch of full-sized trucks showing up . . . They passed by the first time, honking, yelling stuff out. Most of us ignored them,” said an Oxnard resident with the Indigenous group who asked that his name not be used. He then said that it seemed like trucks were coming back around. He emphasized that he takes no issue with people expressing their political views; he just really felt the drivers were there to intimidate them. “The second time around it alarmed us . . . they were coming back, people are getting scared . . . they are here to put fear in us.” Paul Hefterich, of Camarillo, was in the sixth or seventh truck from the front. He had no idea the Indigenous people would be there, and he didn’t hear anyone talking about them when the group gathered before their caravan. He didn’t know about any trucks circling back to pass by the area a second time. “I’ve been doing it for three or four weeks now,” said Hefterich. He found out about the caravan through a Facebook group for Patriots of Ventura County. “We don’t really have an agenda . . . that’s exactly what it is, patriots 10 —

showing their pride for this nation. We believe what Trump is doing is what we want for this country and we gather together to fly our flags . . . We are there to spread the love, not stir up any hate.” He said the caravan route is loosely planned out and then it’s just “follow the leader.” In past weeks they have driven that same route, as well as different routes in the downtown area. Hefterich didn’t hear anyone talking about an Indigenous gathering before the caravan, and he didn’t know anything about it until he saw the group in the park. Hefterich recalled that on Oct. 11, when he was at the triangle island across from city hall, most of the Indigenous people were down away from the road. He heard them yelling at the drivers. As he drove on he could see a few walking into the crosswalk behind him. He followed the leading trucks away from city hall, turning down Chestnut and continuing on through downtown, eventually driving down Seaward Ave. to Harbor Blvd. and then turning onto Spinnaker Drive to gather at a parking lot near the Ventura Harbor where the caravan planned to finish.
Standoff in the crosswalk
Video footage (linked below) of the interaction viewed by the VCReporter shows a group of nine people standing in the crosswalk. Several have one arm raised, and some shouted “Colonizers” and “go back to Europe.” The man from Oxnard was one of the Indigenous people who walked into the crosswalk in front of vehicles. He said that he initially entered the crosswalk to support the women who had stepped in front of the trucks, which all initially remained stopped. Some trucks began leaving the line, turning down the road to go around the triangle island and back up to Poli St., avoiding the people in the crosswalk. The truck closest to the crosswalk remained stopped. No person approached the vehicle. All pedestrians were either on the sidewalk or in the crosswalk at this time. Then several trucks pull out of the line and into the oncoming traffic lane to drive through the crosswalk, where no one is
standing. Several trucks drive by and continue on. As one truck passes, a woman with the Indigenous group — now walking in the roadway — holds an American flag that was shown flying on a pole in the back of the truck in the video seconds earlier. As a large truck moved into the oncoming traffic lane, the man from Oxnard, now in the crosswalk, stood with his hands behind his back in the crosswalk and the truck inched slowly forward, coming into contact with the man’s body. The man told the VCReporter that he looked into the face of the driver. “He was laughing . . . and I knew he was not going to stop.” The pedestrian chose to step around the driver’s side of the truck, putting himself inches from the open window. “He [the driver] reached out of the window toward my face, I backed away and he didn’t touch me.” When the man left the area a short time later, he said that he felt as though the line of trucks behind him were following him. He was driving the same route to Seaward and Harbor Blvd., and then he saw the trucks turn down Spinnaker. According to Hefterich, the trucks were not following anyone — that route was the regular final leg of the caravan route. Two other Indigenous individuals interviewed by the VCReporter following the event, who asked to remain anonymous, emphasized that the honking and shouting felt very directed at them and made them concerned for their safety. They pointed to posts on social media in which one of the drivers appears to admit to wanting to run over the Indigenous people there.
Police are investigating
On Oct. 15, David Dickey, Assistant Chief with the Ventura Police Department, spoke with the VCReporter and confirmed that an investigation was underway and therefore he is unable to speak specifically about an ongoing investigation. As of press deadline, there has been no status update on the investigation. Section a-1 states, “Any person who commits an assault upon the person of another with a deadly weapon or instrument other than a firearm shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for two, three, or four years, or in a county jail for not exceeding one year, or by a fine not exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000), or by both the fine and imprisonment.”

“Get to the truth”
Dickey emphasized that the VPD “doesn’t interpret the law,” and explained that when they receive a report of a potential crime, investigators “proceed with due diligence, evaluate,” and prepare the evidence for “presentation to the District Attorney’s office . . . ultimately it’s their office that determines whether criminal charges are filed, not the local police department. Our entire goal is to gather all available facts to get to the truth in each situation.” Dickey said he is aware of three separate similar incidents in Ventura city limits, all in the past year: an incident at Victoria Ave and Telephone (July 7) at the end of a Black Lives Matter march, one on July 4 on Harbor Blvd., and the Oct. 11 incident. “It is not normal for us to deal with this type of incident,” Dickey said. “It’s fair to say they are unusual.” He added that in his 26 years in law enforcement, he hasn’t had to deal with this type of event before. He continued that it is the job of the police to “get to the truth . . . that is what the Ventura Police Department is responsible for. We understand these situations can be tense,” adding that the department will “consider both sides” and give “due regard for racial and cultural differences and to investigate fairly without any discrimination to any group . . . both sides are owed that from us.” Date: _______________________________

The iconic band will do just that when it performs a drivein concert at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. “We don’t like to disappoint,” he says. “‘California Girls’ is an iconic song. ‘Good Vibrations’ is an iconic song. ‘Kokomo’ is our biggest-selling single. It came out 32 years ago in the movie Cocktail. ‘Fun, Fun, Fun’ comes to mind. ‘Surfin’ USA’ comes to mind. ‘I Get Around.’ We’ll be doing all of them.” The Concerts in Your Car performance will also include new material like Love’s latest single “This Too Shall Pass,” which he released at the start of the pandemic to encourage positivity. He’s been a friend for a long time.” Love says he and the rest of the band are “more than rested” and ready for the drive-in show. He is sorry, though, that The Beach Boys’ plans were canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We had the biggest year of our career planned and it all disappeared due to the pandemic,” he says. “About 90 percent of the shows were postponed until next year and 10 percent are gone because they were date specific.” The year was The Beach Boys’ biggest because of the extensive tour it had planned in North America and Europe. “Our music has carried us around the world,” he says. “Basically, we had the attendance records for the

In 1989, evolutionary psychologist David Buss and his colleagues did a massive study exploring mate preferences, including the desire for an intelligent partner, across 37 cultures (“on six continents and five islands”). Their participant group included Gujarati Indians, Estonians, mainland Chinese, Santa Catarina Brazilians, and South African Zulus. Using such a broad cross-cultural group (rather than just surveying the latest crop of American college undergrads) helps parse which traits might be evolved “human universals,” inherited by humans around the globe, irrespective of culture. Universal human traits — for example, communicating with language and fear of snakes — evolved to solve recurring problems faced by ancestral humans across continents and over generations, improving our chances of surviving, mating, and, most importantly, passing on our genes. Buss found that for some mate preferences, “cultures varied tremendously.” For example, the Dutch had a “whatevs!” attitude toward whether a partner is a virgin, while people in mainland China, India, and Iran placed a lot of importance on “chastity or virginity” in a partner. There were also
strong sex differences in certain mate preferences — even across cultures — for example, with men (on average) “always ... valuing virginity more than women.” This might help a man avoid a hookup-erella and the evolutionary fail of unwittingly investing in a kid who’ll pass on some other dude’s genes. Of course, no woman has to worry her kid isn’t hers (especially not after 26 hours of screaming labor to push it out). There were also some universal mate preferences — across cultures and in both sexes. Buss and his team found that intelligence (as well as kindness and health) were chart-toppers, traits desired by men and women across cultures from Z to Z: from the Zulus to the Croatians in Zagreb. Granted, Buss did this research 30 years ago. Do his findings hold up? They do — according to a survey of 14,000 people in 45 countries published in March of 2020 by evolutionary psychologist Daniel Conroy-Beam and his grad student Kathryn V. Walter, in concert with a huge international team of researchers. They write, “Consistent with Buss (1989), our results showed that health, kindness, and intelligence were highly valued by both
men and women” around the world. Why might intelligence in a mate have evolved to be such a strong, culturally universal preference? In research exploring the role of men’s intelligence in heterosexual women’s mate choices, psychologist Mark D. Prokosch and his colleagues explain that “greater intelligence is generally associated with success in a wide variety of circumstances,” most notably, workplace success, leading to higher income. “Selecting a more intelligent mate often provides women with better access to resources and parental investment for offspring.” Additionally, smart-man genes are likely to lead to smarter children, making intelligence attractive as an “overall heritable ... quality.” There’s a widely held myth that romantic partners need to be near doppelgangers — have matching traits and interests — to make it as a couple. This sells memberships to those dating sites promising to ferret out “points of compatibility.” However, research by psychologist Manon van Scheppingen finds that varying, complementing personality traits (such as outgoingness or conscientiousness) in partners often lead to greater relationship satisfaction. That said, it’s reasonable to want a
partner with a level of smarts that’s a pretty good match with yours, because, well, a meeting of the minds is a little hard when one mind is tuned into Cold War documentaries while the other is all up in reruns of “Scooby-Doo.” Chances are the notion that you’re a “snob” for wanting an intellectually well-matched partner is driven in part by others’ fear that they’ll be nixed by potential partners for traits beyond their control. There’s this lovely fiction that “what’s inside is all that matters.” A person’s heart and character are deeply important, but you can’t just decide to have the hots for some Mr. Libido Repellent because he feeds orphaned baby birds with an eyedropper while taking calls for a suicide hotline.
