s we celebrate women in Ventura County, we wanted to devote some ink to the local organizations that are working to build confidence in girls.

Girls Scouts of California’s Central Coast

Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast formed in 2007, combining scouting groups across six counties from Santa Cruz to Ventura counties.

Thousands of girls and adult volunteers participate in modern, innovative programs from a revamped Girl Scout organization.

In the aftermath of the pandemic 2020 lockdowns, troops may have gotten a bit smaller. According to the national website, there are currently 30 troops in Ventura County, with about 210 active members registered.

The 36-acre Camp Arnaz Program Center, located off of Highway 33 just above Casitas Springs, is a full-service outdoor facility used by troops and other organizations. The original mission of the Girl Scouts remains, to build “girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.” Programs and events are tailored to provide relevant opportunities that girls of today are asking for, where they can develop their individual interests and strengths. Badges now include technology, engineering, math and climate justice and are grouped into four main areas: STEM, Outdoors, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship.

The “Math in Nature” badge, for example, includes map-making skills, designing a bird feeder and understanding shapes, numbers and design in nature.

“Cookie Business” badges take the thinking beyond the storefront as the famous cookie sales go online. Scout members learn to set business goals and write marketing campaigns. The new Digital Leadership badges focus on digital literacy to help raise awareness about a topic or cause scouts care about. www.girlscoutsccc.org

Girls Inc.

Girls Inc. is a nonprofit organization operating in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties through the public schools with a mission focused on the “whole girl,” helping girls ages 4 to 18 build self-valuing mindsets and the confidence to take risks and seek out their internal strengths. It relies on mentor relationships and research-based programs focused in three main areas: healthy living, academic enrichment and support, and life skills instruction. The organization is also active in advancing the rights of girls and young women.

In Santa Paula, Girls Inc. offers an after school program in small groups with mentors to promote engagement in school.

Girls Rock

This organization offers a girls-only focus with a rocking vibe. It’s based in Santa Barbara and partners with groups and schools in Ventura County. Known for its Amplify Summer Camp experience, this organization uses music to help build connection and confidence in girls from third to 12th grade. These popular camps offer different “tracts” including bass, guitar, drums, vocals, keys/piano, DJ, podcasting, photography, journalism, music production, skateboarding and more. Gender spectrum support Community support can be extremely helpful for young people and their families when a child is questioning their gender, transitioning, or is part of the LGBTQ+ community.

One Step A La Vez: Located in the Santa Clara River Valley, this nonprofit organization provides a safe and welcoming environment for all genders of youth and LGBTQ+ ages 13 to 19 in the communities of Piru, Fillmore and Santa Paula.

Programs include the One Step Teen Center providing after school homework assistance, hot meals, mentoring, recreational activities, art classes and free counseling. The center also serves as a safe place to just hang out. The organization builds confidence and helps teens get involved in their community. Diversity Collective’s Little Unicorns Program: A unique program that meets once a month. This peer-based support group is for children ages 9-12 years old and their caregivers. Little Unicorns provides a space for young LGBTQ+ children to talk about their experiences in a supportive, ageappropriate environment. Rainbow Umbrella Program: In partnership with Ventura County Behavioral Health, this peer-based weekly program is for young LGBTQ+ and allies ages 13-23. What to know about concrete downcycling and recycling

N

by David Goldstein early all curbside recyclables can be recycled in a “closed loop,” meaning, aluminum, glass, plastic and paper can be turned back into cans, bottles and paper. In contrast, concrete, recycled in tonnages far greater than commonly recycled materials, can only be downcycled into a product of lower value. A closely related material, asphalt, can be recycled back into asphalt, but only if it is not mixed with concrete.

Rather than turning discarded concrete, or asphalt mixed with concrete, into new concrete, the best we can expect from recyclers is to crush the material into road base. Recycled road base, placed as an aggregate under new paving material, is still ecologically important. Making road base from urban waste generally has fewer environmental impacts than mining rocks from natural habitats.

Nevertheless, energy lost through downcycling paving material is noteworthy. In an article originally appearing in the online news publication The Hill and distributed last week through MSN, Ognjen Miljanić, professor of chemistry at the University of Houston, cited concrete manufacturing as one reason why ongoing efforts to convert the American electrical grid to clean energy will not be sufficient to meet national climate change emission reduction goals.

Citing data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s April 2021 Monthly Energy Review, Miljanić states that only about 18 percent of total American energy use comes from electricity, and “many energy-consuming pro6— — October 21, 2021

cesses simply cannot be electrified.” For example, “there are no electric airplanes, Christmas shopping cannot arrive from China on an electric container ship” and “cement (from which concrete is made) produced using electricity would easily cost three times as much as” current prices and would require massive new electricity infrastructure. Just electrifying the nation’s cars will require expanding electric generating capacity 25 percent, according to Miljanić.

The facts about concrete are not widely known, but they illustrate an important environmental point. The hierarchy of waste management does not place recycling at the top. First is “reduce,” and second is “reuse.” Concrete can be reused as road base, but the best environmental option is to reduce. If you are thinking of paving a portion of your property, consider other options.

The concrete industry has been researching ways to reduce the impact of their product. According to an Oct. 7 article

by Stacy Liberatore at Dailymail.com, University of Tokyo researchers have found a way to turn waste concrete into new concrete while also capturing carbon dioxide from industrial exhaust. According to researchers cited by Liberatore, concrete manufacturing currently emits 7% of the world’s carbon dioxide, so commercialization of this technology could make a great difference.

While recycling concrete does not currently recover the energy invested in its manufacture, it does save money. Here

are some tips for recycling concrete in Ventura County: Concrete cannot be placed in your curbside recycling cart or commercial mixed recycling bin. Weight limits, printed on most containers, also preclude placement of items like concrete masonry blocks in most disposal containers. Nearly a dozen local facilities for inert recycling offer significant discounts to accept the material, compensating for the inconvenience of hauling material to them.

If you have only a single chunk of concrete under three feet in diameter (resulting, for example, from removing a basketball post from a driveway), some garbage collection companies will allow you to use your free annual bulky item collection allocation and will come to your home and load it into their lift-gate truck in response to your call. Second, if you have enough concrete to justify the cost, you might order a “low-boy” (short sided) roll-off box instead of a bin from your refuse collector.

Local landfills recycle concrete and asphalt into roads and pads. Currently, the Toland Road Landfill, which accepts material only from Fillmore, Santa Paula and Piru, is not charging to take the material, provided rebar is cut flush and pieces are no larger than one foot by one foot.

Symbol of Courage

his is Anzhela Martynava. Martynava is a 49-year-old dancer and clothing designer originally from Belarus and now living in Ventura County. Here, she’s dancing on Harbor Cove Beach in Ventura following her recovery from a double mastectomy. It took over two hours to achieve these shots, in which the scarf Martynava holds was arranged in the shape of a pink ribbon, the familiar symbol of breast cancer awareness.

Near the end of 2017, Martynava was diagnosed with breast cancer. A mere two months later, she was facing a double mastectomy. She was devastated. She’d seen her own mother suffer from this affliction years before and things hadn’t turned out well for her. Understandably, right from the beginning, Martynava was terrified. One night, while asking herself tough questions and scrolling the Internet for answers, Martynava found a video of encouragement. In it, she witnessed a young woman tell the story of her own diagnosis and surgery. It was the story of fear, decision, courage and action. It was the story of overcoming. The woman had decided that if it took a double mastectomy to save her life, she was willing to do it.

Martynava decided that if the woman in the video was brave enough to face her fear and remove her breasts, so was she. “That’s what it was always about, she said later, at the end of the day, the fight was always about the fear.”

After the surgery, Martynava was weak. Simple tasks were incredibly difficult for her. Once she’d been a revered and powerful dancer, but now, she could barely lift her arms, let alone walk to the end of the block.

Martynava could see fear growing in her daughter’s own eyes. She could sense the quivering in her voice when they spoke. She knew her daughter was wondering whether she would be diagnosed next and if she was, how she would fare should she, too, have surgery.

In that moment, motherly love became Martynava’s catalyst for healing. Martynava decided her daughter would bear witness not only to her healing but to her thriving. She would become stronger than she’d ever been no matter what it took. She would be a beacon for her daughter in the same way the anonymous woman on the Internet had been a beacon of bravery and fortitude for her. A symbol of courage.

Martynava started hitting the gym. After a while, she noticed her results gaining momentum. She felt her mobility and passion for life coming back. Every day, she got stronger and stronger. Every day, she found the determination needed for both her and her daughter.

“If anyone has been through this and they see these photographs now, they’ll say, ‘Look at what Martynava can do with her arms!’ They’ll know that if I made it, they can make it, too. Dance was my way, my tool to healing, but that tool can be anything someone is passionate about.”

County extends mask mandate On Oct. 18, 2021 Dr. Robert Levin, Ventura County Public Health Officer, issued an order extending the mandate requiring all persons to wear a face covering when indoors in public spaces, regardless of vaccination status.

Levin’s order is in effect until three things occur.

First, the county must reach and remain in the “moderate” tier for COVID-19 transmission for at least three weeks. To be in the moderate tier, the county daily case rate would need to be at or below seven new cases per 100,000 residents. Second, hospitalizations related to COVID in the county must be “low and stable.” Finally, eight weeks will have to pass after the emergency use authorization of the COVID-19 vaccine for 5 to 11 year olds, or until 80% of the county’s eligible population is fully vaccinated.

The order includes a provision allowing performers at indoor live events to remove their masks while actively performing or participating. This applies to theater, opera, symphony, professional sports and public speaking events.

The order may also be extended as needed or otherwise rescinded.

CSUCI students complete research fellowship Two research fellows at California State University, Channel Islands have completed the Lisagor Fellowship for undergraduate research.

Desiree Caldera and Kaylena Mann each were recognized for their past research and received a $1,000 award with a $3,000 stipend for their research as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) program.

Mann, majoring in psychology, researched psychological testing with a focus on fairness and how wording can be tailored to account for any potential bias against an LGBTQ+ respondent.

Caldera’s work focused on cyber security. She is majoring in computer science and worked on a program that can be used by small businesses to test their internal networks.

“The whole eight weeks of SURF and the project challenged me as a student and my abilities as a computer science major,” said Caldera. “It was rewarding and I can definitely say I cried when I found out I won the fellowship. It meant a lot to be recognized as a woman of color in computer science.”

The fellowship was founded

by Terri Lisagor, Ed.D., professor emeritus of Nutrition and Food Science, with her husband Mark Lisagor, D.D.S, and is aimed at supporting the learning process related to research.

“Having the opportunity to

create my own research questions and take the reins of my own hypotheses was both stressful and invigorating,” said Mann.

“I learned a lot about my own capabilities as a researcher, as well as how exciting this experience can be.”

Port Hueneme adopts General Plan 2045 On Oct. 4, the Port Hueneme City Council voted unanimously to adopt the city’s amended General Plan 2045, which included several changes proposed by council member Laura Hernandez. The document will govern all land use within city limits through 2045.

Two new directors at Vista del Mar Hospital On Oct. 14, Vista del Mar Hospital in Ventura announced two new directors on its staff.

Lorena Bucholtz will serve as director of human resources and Deleene Walker will be the new director of outpatient services.

The hospital is focused on the stabilization and dual diagnosis of persons with mental illness and chemical dependency.

Supervisors increase legal defense funding for oil and gas provisions On Oct. 4, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors voted to increase funding to over $2 million in order to defend the county’s recently adopted General Plan and revisions to the county’s zoning ordinances from several lawsuits aimed at removing new oil and gas permitting requirements from the plan.

Supervisors Matt LaVere, Carmen Ramirez, Linda Parks and Kelly Long voted in support of the increase in legal funding for the matter.

The event was hosted by High Tide, the first robotics team in Ventura, which includes students from El Camino, Foothill, Buena and Ventura high schools. Twenty teams from California and one team from Hawaii participated in the event.

This year, due to the pandemic, it was closed to the public.

“I do good where I can”

G

rowing up today is a lot different than 20 years ago, let alone 30 or 40. That is a fact. Past generations have had upheavals, but today, amidst uncertain economic futures, shifts away from a lifelong career are all in the shadow of an ever-present existential threat.

High school students right now have had their education and social lives disrupted by a global pandemic, and recent graduates have had their career paths thwarted. The uncertainty of what comes next is compounded by another global issue: climate change. This has a huge impact on their mental health.

Seeking real solutions is a key aspect of the approach Karina Kaye, herself just 29, takes in how she works to combat climate change, both in her personal life and her community. The Oxnard activist currently serves as a remote intern with 350 Colorado, the Colorado branch of the 350.org environmental organization working towards a fossil-free future. Kaye is part of the 350CO environmental policy team focusing on the “just transition working group for oil and gas export communities and lowering emissions in the transportation sector for the state.”

Unemployed but not inactive

Green job resources needed

As COVID-19 spread locally, Kaye said that she was having a “difficult time,” and today is unemployed as a result of the pandemic. But she’s thrown herself into volunteer pursuits. In addition to her work with 350CO, she also serves on the volunteer board for Climate First: Replacing Oil and Gas (CFROG) and been a key member of the organization’s grant-funded program, Environmental Voices Academy (EVA), an educational program revised during pandemic lockdowns and aimed at getting kids involved in monitoring air quality around their schools.

Looking back, Kaye credits “being able to get invested in community work,” through a local program with high school students, as helping her cope. “They have so much enthusiasm and passion, it’s not really something I was familiar with at that age.”

EVA is a program for high school juniors and seniors that helps foster environmental justice organizers, providing students with an awareness of the issues and a sense that they can make a difference with real skills and real solutions. Kaye explained that seeing a way forward is important in discussing climate change with young people, and helping them not get overwhelmed by the weight of the issue.

“Climate change is such a huge, difficult concept to deal with,” she said. “ According to U.N. scientists, we have less than 10 years to lower our emissions . . . to lower our impacts [1] . . . Young people, if they don’t know the science, they intuitively know there is something quite wrong.”

Kaye attributed the wave of “juvenile mental illness” seen in the U.S. and other nations to a “culture of fear.” She said it’s important to her that as young people become concerned about climate change, that an effort is made to simultaneously “communicate the different solutions with them, it’s about their own future. I’m honored to be a part of it.”

EVA is gearing up on its next session, starting in January 2022.

Members will be reaching out to schools in the coming weeks.

One of those solutions Kaye is eyeing is employment in the environmental sector.

The concept of having green job resources as part of workforce development strategies is “pretty nascent, there is a lot of excitement with our [CFROG] staff. It’s a different focus, a very necessary one.”

For teens and young adults interested in greener jobs, Kaye explained that the messaging is incomplete. “The trades are not being talked about... students are looking for something new, innovative.” While they have a desire to avoid extractive industries and want to find jobs that have a future, there are few “green economy resources provided at the local level.”

The trades themselves have to be part of the solution.

“Things fundamentally have to change from the labor side, so they’re ahead of any economic issues.”

As an example, she said it’s “fairly clear” that the oil and gas industry’s zenith is “behind us,” and yet there is very little focus on filling that void for labor as the sector declines. This void can be felt by young people as they try to envision their own futures.

Over the pond and back again

Kaye belongs to a multicultural family: Her father is Jewish and her mother has a Hispanic background. She spent her early childhood in Northern Manchester in Northern England. Her family and upbringing (including moving to Oxnard as a teenager) laid the foundation for her interest in labor and the need to involve the working class in climate solutions.

“It’s this great post-industrial city, the seat of the Industrial Revolution,” she said of Northern Manchester. Growing up there “fostered an interest” in that history. She sees a reflection of that history in what is happening today.

Manchester’s population exploded in the wake of largescale manufacturing growth, mainly in the textile sector, starting around the mid-17th century. People flooded into the city from the rural countryside, forever changing the culture. Then, as choking smog, child labor and worker exploitation plagued the area, it became the site of the first worker uprisings.

“The history of working people is embedded in who I am,” Kaye affirmed. “As a kid [the history] was at a very surface level — this is our culture, a history we can be proud of — but now I’m able to employ a more post-colonial lens.”

“I moved to the U.S. when I was 14,” she continued. “I went to Oxnard High School, came in as a sophomore.” She recalls being “much younger than everyone else, I didn’t

know what I was doing. I don’t know what I’m doing with my life now,” she said with a laugh. “I think anyone who does is kinda lying.”

After graduating from Oxnard High School, Kaye studied history and sociology at Ventura College, then transferred to UCLA in 2013. She majored in gender studies and minored in film. “I was looking for a smaller program. Gender studies was a small program, in a huge school.”

She knew she’d continue to study; finding the right program was key.

“I was interning with Food and Water Watch in 2017.”

She was part of an organizing team building awareness in Oxnard around an expanding oil and gas project in the area — a project that was ultimately crushed due to community pressure on the county. She realized that her interests were outside of the physical sciences, but within community-based climate work.

“I was looking for a program to further my education,” she recalled, and found that a program at the University of Edinburgh offered the perfect synthesis, “integrating environmental science and social science lens.” She left Oxnard for Scotland to pursue a master’s degree in global environment, politics and society.

The “just transition” to renewable resources

“It was the perfect thing for me,” she said of her time at graduate school, which coincided with the political turmoil of Brexit. “England is my home country, Scotland voted against Brexit . . . something was happening in that part of the world, in a place where people apparently had their heads screwed on properly.”

During her master’s studies, she had the opportunity to work with the European organization Young Friends of the Earth, which works in disenfranchised communities to build a vision for a just transition away from a fossil fuel-based economy. Kaye explained the concept of a “just

transition” recognizes that the necessary “shift off of fossil fuels” must be “guided and led by working peoples, labor unions and other organizations that support working class people.”

Prior to the “concept of the Green New Deal [in the U.S.] there was a transition among labor unions. The Scottish Government, for example, was working very closely with environmental groups, labor unions . . . to get off fossil fuels . . . and answer the fundamental question: How do we get off fossil fuels in the most equitable terms possible?”

“That is something I’m really passionate about, being proactive in finding ways that we can all work together as a community,” she said, adding that this is the work CFROG is doing.

A key part of a just transition, and the message Kaye wants to get out, is that the “interests of unions and workers are not out of step with climate goals.” Programs like EVA and raising the public understanding of this issue can help ensure that “people who work in extractive industries” are a part of and, in fact, at the forefront of “getting off of the oil economy that is really strangling us.”

“We are now at an interesting flash point in history”

She likens what is happening now, with workers feeling pinched due to efforts to shift the global economy away from emission-heavy industries, with unrest during the

Industrial Revolution. “That was a time with a rising workforce, the beginning of class struggles. A time in which global emissions were becoming an issue, with ecological and human labor exploitation. We are now at an interesting flash point in history, seeing that reproduced all over the world.”

She sees the “maxim of the environmental justice movement” — “a safe place to live, work and play” — as a reflection of the issues that workers brought forward during the

struggles in Manchester.

Kaye completed her master’s degree in late 2019 and came back to Ventura County. “I missed my partner, I missed my family.” She worked on the state assembly campaign for Jonathan Abboud until the beginning of the March primaries. “Then the pandemic set in. Like a lot of people, I was out of a job. Living at home . . . it’s important to state that people are still affected by this; it’s not over, really . . . It’s OK to not be OK. I think a really important message to get out to young people is to not be afraid to be vulnerable, and to look after your mental health.”

“I feel like I’m a community-oriented person. I do good where I can,” she continued, noting that her partner, friends and community work inspire her and keep her “grounded.”

Reflecting on her education, she said, “It was a wonderful experience...it was a real privilege to be able to do those kinds of things . . . [education] is probably the most important thing in my life,” and that “access to education for other people . . . that is how you create a better society, better access to education.”

“Newest little thing”

Ginger Gherardi of Santa Paula

f you’ve ridden, walked, ran or drove somewhere in Ventura County, then chances are you’ve traveled on a project that Ginger Gherardi had a hand in getting built.

Gherardi, a resident of Santa Paula, was the first executive director of the Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) and worked at the agency for 17 years. Prior to that she served on the Simi Valley Planning Commission and Simi Valley City Council, was secretary for VCTC and worked for the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission. Later, after retirement, she was elected to the Santa Paula City Council.

She’s not done yet. During the month of October, she’s one of the organizers and leaders of the Pumpkin Patch, held now at Limoneira Ranch, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Santa Paula.

“I’m exhausted! We had 3,000 people this weekend,” she said with a chuckle. The annual event brings in thousands of dollars that Rotary distributes to local nonprofit organizations and schools.

Her other current project (remember, she’s retired) is rooted in a long-term vision to ensure the community has a well-maintained park. “I’ve created a nonprofit foundation to basically raise money to help maintain the new 37-acre park at Limoneira.”

The community park is planned as part of a new housing development in Santa Paula. “People will be able to buy a brick, or pay a large amount of money to have a baseball diamond named for them. All the money will be invested.” The income from that investment will be used to “defray some of the city’s maintenance” costs. “That’s the newest little thing I’m playing with.”

Parent, educator, city councilmember, activist

Gherardi’s impact has been no little thing.

Her civic engagement started with picketing in Simi Valley against a shopping center slated for land across from the home she and her family had just bought.

“That was how things started. We picketed. My youngest son was in a stroller, he was a couple months old. They didn’t sell any houses for two days.”

Then the city incorporated, the election occurred and when the new city was putting together a planning commission, her

husband at the time suggested she should apply for the commission, to ensure that the shopping center wouldn’t get built. Five of the members were political appointees, two were selected from the public. She applied and was appointed to the planning commission in 1969. She was elected to the city council in 1972.

“It was my 28th birthday,” Gherardi recalled.

the planning commission. She was teaching part time at California State University (what would later become the Northridge campus). Her children were two and four. Eventually she was teaching at Moorpark College, then full time at Moorpark High School.

Making moves in transportation

After her time on the Simi City Council, their family moved back to the East Coast for a spell. They returned to California “because the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission made me an offer to come run their highway program.” Which she did for four years.

She explained that most elected officials go to work in public agencies in government relations or something similar. “I took a technical job, running technical programs, transportation development.” In a position with the Southern California Association of Government in transportation, she became an expert in the state’s Transportation Development Act. If you wanted a road built, a bridge put in, a new bike path or any other transportation project funded, she was the go-to person.

“I did a lot of the stuff that you see in L.A. now . . . the carpool lane, I had a hand in naming and creating Smart Streets.”

Her department was responsible for a lot of the technology used in transportation in the region. Examples included determining where to move traffic lights to improve traffic flow, the call box system with a hearing device, and contactless or “tap” bus passes. She was particularly adept at identifying and securing the funding sources for projects.

Around 2000, Ventura County was forming its own transportation commission. Prior to that, all the money coming into the county for transportation was being funneled through the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), which meant the county was “losing money right and left, we couldn’t get anything built.” VCTC was formed and Gherardi was hired as its first director.

“That was an interesting experience, starting a new agency when you don’t even have a pencil.”

During her tenure, she started the Vista Bus System and Metrolink.

“This is a true story,” she related. “The joint power authority was signed in my office. All the other counties were fighting over how many votes they’d get [to govern Metrolink.] I looked at all these guys and told them, ‘I’ll cause more trouble with one vote than you can with three.’” She said it was never a problem having just one vote for Ventura County.

is I got the funding for the bike lane on the 101 between Santa Barbara and Ventura. It was built after I retired.” She secured the funding and was overseeing the negotiations between the two counties.

“It takes a long time to build transportation projects,” and the process involves a “strange funding cycle.” She oversaw multimillion dollar budgets and projects.

“As executive director of the commission [VCTC], I

brought in more money for this county and got more built than you can imagine, mega millions of dollars.”

Projects are still being built that she had a hand in planning, and for which she secured funding.

Active retirement

That knowledge continues to be put to work, even though Gherardi is retired. Friends began asking her to run for Santa Paula City Council. She was elected in 2014 and was a part of the trifecta team, with Marcia Edward and Rob Corley, that unified the school district in Santa Paula. While on the council she helped ensure that the city fire department, which at the time was “understaffed and underfunded,” was annexed and became part of the Ventura County Fire Department. She also helped obtain the funding for the building of the Santa Paula Art Museum, and she brought the Agriculture Museum with the Museum of Ventura County to Santa Paula.

Gherardi said she tries to enjoy doing less. She reads five books a week, and gets involved with various “hot button issues” in the community “as a private citizen. There have been issues here and there I’ve taken a position on, I try to stay low key . . .

Well, I’m not bored. I have got lots of things I still want to do.”

he New Orleans-based Honey Island Swamp Band will be coming to Newbury Park on Saturday, Oct. 23, as part of the Stagecoach Inn After Dark outdoor concert series. What better way to celebrate the return of live music than with the authentic sounds of New Orleans.

The musicians are excited to be playing again, after a months-long shutdown in touring caused by the pandemic. But COVID-19 isn’t the first large-scale crisis they’ve had to face. Honey Island Swamp Band was founded in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Future bandleader Aaron Wilkinson was evacuated to San Francisco amid the floods. Soon after, he encountered two fellow New Orleans musicians, Sam Price and Garland Paul, in the same situation. The trio would not allow the devastation of their city to stop them from spreading its joyous music, and after weekly gigs at San Francisco’s Boom Boom Room, the musicians got their groove back.

“It started as a side project,” explains Wilkinson.

“We were all in other successful bands, but Hurricane Katrina hit and we found ourselves stranded in San Francisco. A friend who owns the Boom Boom Room offered to let us play every Sunday and that’s how it started off; just as a way to keep busy while we were in exile from New Orleans.”

Wilkinson has loved music from a young age.

Though not originally from Louisiana, the dynamic music of New Orleans became an inspiration for him.

“My dad played a little guitar and sang in the church choir. He was always fooling around on the guitar around the house, always playing records and we all loved to sing along. I begged for an electric guitar for Christmas when I was 11. My folks got me an acoustic and told me if I stuck with lessons for a year, they would get me an electric. The next Christmas, I got my first electric guitar and haven’t looked back.”

Wilkinson describes his influences as “everything from country artists like George Jones and Delbert McClinton, to southern rock bands like the Allmans or Little Feat, and of course the New Orleans influences, Doctor John and Lee Dorsey and so on. Throw in a

The Awkward Pastry Chef hits the small screen

Baker’s Dozen - Streaming online on Hulu

he Great British Bake Off is one of the most popular cooking competitions on television, beloved by fans on both sides of the pond and beyond. (It’s known stateside as The Great British Baking Show due to Pillsbury owning the trademark on “Bake Off.”) The hosts are funny and knowledgeable. The amateur bakers consistently impress with their skill, passion and creativity. And the entire show is imbued with such warmth and camaraderie that even noted crank Paul Hollywood can’t sour the sweet, gentle vibe.

Streaming service Hulu is taking inspiration from that format with its own amateur baking competition, Baker’s Dozen, an eight-episode show that debuted on Oct. 7. Ventura pastry chef Jess Modzelweski was one of the contestants, and answered some questions for the Ventura County Reporter about a career in cooking, her experience on the show and more.

Were you born and raised in Ventura County?

I was raised in Ventura (holler Saticoy Elementary and Balboa Middle School!) and left for high school in Washington State. I bopped around a lot over the years . . . Olympia, Los Angeles, Boston and even Krakow, Poland for an eventful year! But Ventura has always felt like home base to me and I often find myself back here. At the start of the pandemic, I was living and working in Silverlake, Los Angeles. The cost of rent and the low bakery wages brought me back to Ventura in August 2020 to manage the bakery of an upscale grocery store in Santa Barbara.

Where do you live now?

I’m currently in Midtown Ventura.

How did you get started as a professional pastry chef?

I always knew I wanted to end up in a field where I could create. Initially I thought I’d become an artist, moving through the motions of a BFA program at Washington State, and then an MFA program at Tufts (working toward the ultimate goal of art professor). I worked with painting, installation work, then screenprinting and pattern-making. Six years of higher ed and $180K of student loans later, I fell completely out of love and burnt out with the notion of working in academia.

In 2015, I found myself working a tech gig in Krakow, Poland. I missed American sweets so much, and couldn’t find what I needed for a simple Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. As a matter of necessity, I taught myself how to make pie crust from scratch. My baking completely took off from there!

Jess Modzelewski with a special occasion cake. Photo submitted Soon I was bringing sweet treats to the office weekly, feeding my Polish coworkers apple pie, chocolate chip cookies, layer cakes and more. I found baking as the creative outlet I was so desperately lacking.

As I moved back to the States, my education culminated in a year-long apprenticeship at Butter Cake Shoppe in Los Feliz. Under the guidance of head chef/ owner Sasha Gustafson, I learned the ins and outs of bakery production at scale, how to decorate cakes, how to take orders in, and more.

When did you open Awkward Pastry?

I opened Awkward Pastry as a side hustle in 2019, taking on a few pop-ups here and there, making babka for my friend The Bad Jew [thebadjewla.com], selling the occasional mixed pastry box and holiday orders. In November of 2020, I quit my day job managing the bakery at a Santa Barbara grocery store and took Awkward Pastry completely full time! Currently, I work out of Summit Kitchen in Ventura, a local shared commercial kitchen space, with pickups in Midtown Ventura scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays.

Based on your portfolio, your creations are anything but awkward!

How did you come up with the name Awkward Pastry?

I’m a small bakery offering an eclectic range of seasonal items like babka, apple cider donut cake, passion fruit basque cheesecake, plus of course custom celebration cakes and a variety of very special cookies. But what really sets me apart is that while I have a set menu like anyone else, I love taking on special requests! Clients will come to me asking for their favorite treat, and I’ll do my best to accommodate whatever that may be.

A Black Forest cake? You got it! Gluten-free pumpkin cheesecake? Yum, let’s do the damn thing. An Italian rainbow-inspired cookie with matcha and raspberry?

Heckin A! You want a fondant-covered gender reveal cake? No. Get out of here! Gender is a construct and fondant tastes terrible.

LOL! But really!!! I truly believe that not all business should come my way if it doesn’t make my heart sing or I disagree with the execution. And by the way, this is why I’m Awkward Pastry! I have no filter, I come in full force with my person-

ality, and I’m unapologetically Awkward with disarming candor and a weird sense of humor. It’s taken me a long time to accept myself for the way I am, but I’m finally here and so grateful for my clients that love me for me.

How did you get involved with Baker’s Dozen?

A casting director reached out to me about Baker’s Dozen almost a year ago.

They found my Instagram page and we had a couple of phone calls, then a Zoom call to see how I’d present on camera.

What was it like being on the show?

The experience was wild! I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone what I was doing, the lead-up required quite a bit of prep on my side, and the whole time this was going down I had to keep taking in Awkward orders and selling cakes (gotta earn a living!).

I’ll always remember the day before filming and trying to finagle a two-tier cake for a friend in Malibu before heading out to Sylmar Ranch, then not sleeping for a night anxiously awaiting the challenge. When I showed up at 6 a.m., it was still dark outside, very cold, and we were warned not to speak to anyone around us. So here we all were in our little bubbles, eyeing up the competition, what everyone was wearing, wondering what everyone was about to execute . . . and then boom! We had an hour to decorate a gingerbread house.

What did you find the most challenging about being on the show?

What was most rewarding?

The most challenging part of being on the show was finding a way to be comfortable with my voice, knowing full well that whatever I said out loud would be immortalized on Hulu forever! Ahhhhh, the anxiety attacks post-production were very real, not knowing how I would

And then my actual challenge, to decorate a gingerbread house?! What a nightmare! It’s not my skillset to make something with royal icing and fondant, and in the end I wasn’t judged on my baking whatsoever.

The most rewarding part of being on Baker’s Dozen was connecting with my fellow First Round losers post-production. I met some incredibly talented chefs that similarly hustle, have day jobs in baking, and are so immensely talented in their own regard, outside of a gingerbread house challenge. We’ve bonded and connected, and I find that’s what’s brought me to food in the first place: community!

Any surprises, about the show or yourself, that came up during the competition?

I was surprised to see how much stage fright I really had in real life! I’m an extremely extroverted person, I can always find myself making friends in a crowd, but turn the camera on me and I lose all confidence. Since then, other casting directors have reached out to me, and my answer has consistently been, “No, I can’t, but wanna buy a cake???”

I’m a humble operation but it would be my dream come true to serve walk-in customers in Downtown or Midtown Ventura. I got a boob job two years ago. My best friend, seeing the results, wanted one, too. When she realized she couldn’t afford it, she started making snide comments about women who get them. Recently, a guy was hitting on me at a party, and she started flirting with him and asked, “Do you think I need a boob job?” and told him I’d gotten one. I was shocked.

I’d like to say something to her, but she’s the louder part of my friend group, and I’m unsure how.

Many people have a romanticized view of women as the sweet, ever-nurturing “better angels of our nature.” That’s a major myth, but it continues to have traction due to the nature of female rivalry, which is much like slow-acting poison gas.

(It’s often hard for a woman to recognize she’s been dosed...till she’s writhing on the floor like a goldfish sucking in its last desperate breaths.)

While from boyhood on, guys tend to relish competition and are openly aggressive (like when one socks another in the jaw), psychologist Anne Campbell describes female aggression as “indirect” and “covert” (sneaky and hidden). She believes women evolved to compete this way to avoid physical harm that might have damaged their ability to have or care for children.

Common sneaky ladywar tactics include weaponizing a group of women against a targeted woman by spreading nasty gossip about her and rallying the coven to ostracize her. In the presence of a man or men, one woman will try to undermine another woman’s mate value by revealing her supposed hussyhood or trashing her looks — as you experienced.

Men tend to prefer natural breasts (though their eyes go boi-oi-oing! at the big, pert fakeuns). Your “best

friend,” spotting that a guy seemed into you, performed the vital public service of informing him your bodacious boobs are, in fact, siliconey islands.

Why would she do this? Well, unbeknownst to you, you violated an unspoken rule of female society by amping up your appeal to men via Boob Fairy, M.D.: openly competing with other women. It’s the “openly” part that’s the problem. Psychologist Joyce Benenson explains that, in contrast with “the constant male struggle to figure out who is better, faster, smarter, or otherwise more skilled,” girls and women enforce “equality” among themselves and resent and punish women who stand out.

“Should a girl appear superior, even accidentally,” she is guilty of a crime against the rest and “faces social exclusion.” This carries through to adulthood, with the thinking (summed up by Benenson): “Nice women don’t try to outdo their female peers.”

Of course, women do compete.

But, Benenson notes — per interviews with hundreds of women by various researchers — women deny they compete with one another, even to themselves. This subconscious self-deception — “a woman’s honest belief that she never competes with other females” — allows her to do

just that without any pangs of conscience getting in her way.

That’s one reason why confronting this woman about what she did might be problematic. Additionally, research by evolutionary psychologists Tania Reynolds and Jaime Palmer-Hague suggests your standing up for yourself — telling this woman her behavior was out of line — could be portrayed by her (to other women in your circle) as your victimizing her! Thus putting a big stain on your reputation!

Compared with “traditional forms of gossip” (the sort readily perceived as catty and mean), women’s disclosures of a friend’s hurting their feelings (kindness “violations”) get a pass, Reynolds and Palmer-Hague observe. They are “relatively trusted and approved,” suggesting women have “a social blind spot” to a tool used to trash the reputation of other women. Reynolds explained to me via email: Basically, if a female friend says about another woman, “‘You wouldn’t guess how mean Mary was to me the other day,’ you’re less likely to recognize this friend’s disclosure as gossip.”

In their research, disclosures like this “effectively tarnished ... social opportunities” of the women they

were made about. “Participants evaluated women who treated their friends poorly as immoral,” avoided having them as friends, and wanted to “warn others about their bad character.”

You might decide to say something anyway: gently tell this woman you prefer to keep news of your boob job unbroadcast. Note that even this approach could be turned into ammunition against you through a “victimhood” story she might tell.

Consider whether you have the social and emotional capital to bear the potential costs — while factoring in the psychological cost of just sucking it up and saying nothing.

Ultimately, though many women are nothing but supportive of other women, it’s wise to remain mindful that, well, behind every beautiful woman is a crowd of other women looking to push her into a shed and padlock the door. (c)2021, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved.
