n a statement released at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11, the Ventura County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters stated they have received reports of groups in the county promoting unofficial ballot drop boxes.

“My office works hard to conduct fair and impartial elections and to provide safe and secure options for voters to return their ballot, to say I’m disappointed that people would make a concerted effort to deceive voters would be an understatement,” said Mark Lunn, Ventura County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters.

The two unofficial ballot boxes were in Simi Valley at the Republican Values Center and Saint Rose Church. “The church was aware of

the issues the box created and said it will no longer be placed there. A rep at the Republican Center said there was a box in the back and Elections staff told them not to use it,” said Miranda Nobriga, Public Information Officer with the Ventura County Registrar of Voters.

According to the statement, the placement, use and promotion of “unauthorized, non-official ballot drop boxes is prohibited by state law.”

The public should understand that only the locked white drop boxes at the stated locations with the official logo and signs of the Ventura County Elections Division are official and secure.

“Elections are all about trust and unofficial drop boxes are not safe.

There is no way for the voter to

know if their ballot reaches our office as cast and this certainly undermines public trust,” said Lunn. “My message to those that are putting out these boxes is ‘cease and desist this activity, you’re not being helpful and you’re undermining the process.’ ” There are two versions of the correct and official ballot drop boxes. One design is for outdoor locations and the other, also white, is narrower and designed for indoor locations. See photos.

Support for families facing cancer during pandemic

There are numerous challenges a family faces when a child is diagnosed with cancer. For some, the pandemic has introduced additional factors: job loss or insecurity, financial hardship and yet more health concerns and added stress. Since March, the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (TBCF) has ramped up its services to provide additional financial, educational and emotional support in the face of COVID-19.

Rent and mortgage assistance, grocery gift cards and meal and package delivery have helped meet food and shelter needs, while tutoring has helped ensure school-age children can make the most of their education. Direct financial assistance and therapy have also been provided. The foundation serves families throughout San Luis Obisbop, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and has helped 31 local families affected by both cancer and the economic impacts of COVID-19.

Mosquito control ahead of rainy season

ccording to weatherspark.com, the rainy season in Ventura County usually starts this week and lasts 6.6 months, peaking in February. Although Ventura County has been hot and dry recently, now is a good time to start preventing mosquito breeding, a problem usually coming in tandem with our wet season.

According to Cary Svoboda, Vector Control Program Lead with the Ventura County Environmental Health Division, small, day-biting, invasive Aedes mosquitoes were recently found in several cities in Ventura County. The problem will get much worse if we do not take precautions before the rains start.

One precaution is to be sure proper screens are attached to rain barrels that capture rainwater. A 1/16 inch mesh is necessary to keep out all mosquitoes, according to Svoboda.

Tire swings, tire sandboxes, tire obstacle courses and other reuses of tires can also pose mosquito breeding dangers. No matter how a stored tire is angled, if it is uncovered, it will collect water.

Worse, when the rain is over, the tire’s curve shades collected water, preventing rapid evaporation, and the tire’s black rubber heats the water, making it even more attractive to mosquitoes.

Puncturing tire walls for drainage is difficult, and because cutting tools bounce off tires, it can be

dangerous, so covering tires to prevent water collection is essential, if not always practical.

Also, keep an eye on potted plants to avoid a problem my parents faced last month. Plagued by mosquitos, they called a vector control specialist who examined their backyard and found pools of water in their overgrown, root-bound, potted orchids. Roots were preventing drainage out of the bottom of the pots, so water was pooling under leaves at the top of the soil, and mosquitoes were breeding. Re-pot to avoid problems.

A similar problem with potted plants relates to over-watering. If you over-water, you can create puddles in the drainage plate under the pot.

The Vector Control Program for Ventura County, managed by the Ventura County Environmental Health Division, has a website on the topic, at www.vcrma.org/vector-control-program, which mentions other tips. For example, fill a hollow tree stump or tree hole with sand to avoid water accumulation; store wheelbarrows, small boats, chil-

dren’s toys, wading pools, and empty pots upside down; and avoid accumulation of lawn cuttings or raked leaves in gutters and storm drains to ensure water flows rather than pools.

You should also stock ornamental ponds with mosquito fish, which are available free by calling 805-662-6582. Bacterial larvicide, such as MosquitoDunks, is another control measure targeting mosquito larvae.

If you see a danger on someone else’s property, the best option is to politely inform them. Another option is to contact the Ventura County Vector Control hotline at 805-658-4310. You can leave an anonymous report, including only the address of the danger, but if you also leave your name and phone number, staff can follow up with you in case they are unable to find the danger you noticed.

Ventura gathering ends in “ugliness”

n Sunday, Oct. 11, a gathering of Indigenous people from the region gathered at noon in front of Ventura City Hall to commemorate Indigenous People’s Day. Near the end of the gathering a large group of trucks drove past on Poli St. and then began doing loops around the triangle area in front of city hall at Poli and California streets.

The drivers honked the horns and they and the passengers yelled at the group that had assembled.

“We Indigenous people never needed a holiday, we always knew the truth of this day,” said KC Rodriguez, a member of the Barbareño-Ventureño Band of Mission Indians.

Last year the Ventura County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to name the second Monday in October, previously called Columbus Day, Indigenous People’s Day. “It’s nice to know more and more cities are finally acknowledging the truth, but it’s just a small step in the right direction of reconciliation.”

the group repeatedly and taunting the people who had gathered, Rodriguez said it was obvious that someone had told the people in the trucks about their gathering. She said that as they were ending their gathering and “trying to do our final speaking . . . they were obviously trying to stir up a conflict.”

She said that people in the trucks were yelling “we support the statue” and “It’s Columbus Day,” and that the trucks had “Trump flags and U.S. flags.”

“They had nothing better to do than to bother us,” Rodriguez continued. “We were peacefully gathering there . . . there was not any sort of negativity, they brought hate and ugliness . . . it was disrespectful and ugly.”

According to Rodriguez, a few

people attending the gathering were hit by the trucks.

“I saw vehicles hit two people, [the drivers] didn’t care,” she said, adding that the people she saw who got hit walked away and that she didn’t know if they were injured or not. The group Rodriguez was with walked to their cars and as they drove away, they saw a police officer there.

“He was just talking to the white people. He didn’t talk or try to get any information from an Indigenous person.”

“The most sad thing is that they actually had kids in the truck, I saw them. You guys really think that is OK showing your kid this hatred? . . . They have them thinking their parents are doing the right thing by trying to run people over in the crosswalk.”

Lucy McDaniel, known to many in her previous role as children’s hair stylist Lucy in the Sky, was inspired by a teary-eyed question from her 10-year-old grandson, Tucker Wheatley.

“He was worried about Santa Claus,” said McDaniel, adding that Tucker asked “Will he have to wear a COVID mask when he comes down the chimney?” She responded that she didn’t know, but she did have a way to lighten the air a bit now.

McDaniel thought this small gesture of fun might “Shift the frequency of the planet . . . lighten up the planet and keep [us] smiling, even if it’s under your mask.”

WEV gives Trailblazer award Women’s Economic Ventures is awarding the Trailblazer Award to Brenda Allison in recognition of her work founding two local insurance agencies and serving as CEO of Coast General Insurance Brokers.

Ventura Police Officer’s scholarship awarded The three recipients of the 17th Annual Dee Dowell Memorial Scholarship, awarded by the Ventura Police Officers Association are Bailey Welch, Tara Martin and Kali Garibay.

Welch is receiving the first place award of $2,000 and will be attending Ventura College to pursue nursing. Martin will receive $1,500 and attend University of Arizona studying early child education. The third place $1,000 award is being given to Garibay, currently attending the University of Southern California studying law history and culture.

The scholarships are awarded in memory of Sergeant Darlon “Dee” Dowell, the only officer in Ventura’s history to die in the line

of duty. He was shot and killed on Aug. 7, 1978.

Recipients are selected each year based on display of remarkable academic achievement, community service and financial need. Applicants must reside in Ventura or have graduated from a Ventura high school in the past three years and have future plans in public service.

NAMI launches new wellness program The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Ventura County is launching a new pilot program called Community Cares aimed at counteracting some of the exacerbated mental health issues related to the pandemic.

The free online program includes resources and information on mental wellness, stigma, diagnoses, treatment, suicide prevention, self care and communication. Those who participate in the program receive a workbook with awareness building exercises that help build and practice skills, and provide information on recognizing the signs of mental illness.

The two hour webinar is led by trained volunteer presenters who are either family members or peers of those living in recovery. Their experiences can provide valuable insight into mental health.

The program is free and available to anyone living in Ventura County. Online information and registration are online at: www.namiventura.org/ community-cares.

State grant available for boating safety education Noon on Oct. 30 is the deadline for applications for grants of $40,000 up to a total of $1.6 million available to public agencies, colleges, universities and organizations that offer on-the-water boater safety training and education to the public. The Aquatic Center Education Program is funded through the U.S. Coast Guard Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund through the Division of Boating and Waterways.

Grants are available for student scholarships for boating courses and related equipment. Funding can cover instructor training and boating safety related events.

Ventura County’s Measure O Will voters allow greenhouse cannabis cultivation?

easure O is on the ballot, finally putting the question of whether or not cannabis can be commercially grown in the county before the voters.

“Although we would have wanted this ballot measure to include outdoor cultivation and retail sales, for conservative unincorporated Ventura County this is a long overdue first step towards allowing commercial cannabis activity,” states Sespe Creek Collective, a dispensary in Ojai, on its website. “We welcome the opportunity to source products grown locally in our region and hope this will provide new options for small farmers.”

The county already allows industrial hemp to be grown and has issued permits for 4,000 acres of hemp growing in the county. But cannabis is the plant that is used for activities that up until recent years were illegal. California has so far left the decision up to counties and cities to decide whether to allow commercial cannabis growing in their jurisdictions.

Last month the Ventura County Board of Supervisors received a report on Measure O and the proposition’s potential impacts in the county, commissioned from HdL Consulting (HdL), an Orange County-based firm with expertise in cannabis policy, regulation and compliance.

What would Measure O allow?

The measure, if passed by a simple majority of voters, would allow up to 500 cumulative acres countywide of cannabis to be grown for commercial purposes in already existing greenhouses or other indoor facilities, in the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. The plant could only be grown in areas zoned exclusively for agricultural purposes and industrial activities (AE, M1 and M2 zones).

An additional 100 acres of nurseries could be permitted to house plants for sale and some ancillary and processing activities would be allowed as needed with cultivation activities. All growers would have to comply with state laws, and receive a county-issued license.

The measure approves a 4 percent tax on gross receipts from proceeds related to cultivation and a 1 percent tax on gross receipts related to nurseries. Those levels match taxes already in effect in Santa Barbara County. Proceeds would be part of the county’s general fund and could be used for any expense.

Applications for commercial cultivation could be submitted starting Jan. 1, 2021, approved on a first-come, first-served basis. Permission to grow would be ministerial, meaning the county must grant permission if the applicant meets all conditions and the permit would not result in acreage maximums

CITY CANNABIS MEASURES: Ojai’s Measure G: Would place a 3 percent tax on cannabis sales in the city of Ojai, with potential for generating $465,000 to $1.5 million annually for the city’s general fund. Authorizes up to 10 percent tax. Local dispensaries generally oppose the measure, saying the cost will get passed on to consumers already paying high state and federal taxes on cannabis products.

being exceeded. Licenses would be renewed each year.

Measure O would require perimeter security systems that include 24-hour video monitoring and lighting, exceeding state standards. In addition, the law would require the use of “best available control technology” for controlling odors from the greenhouses, but that may not eliminate all odor, which has been a major issue for residents who currently live near areas where industrial hemp is being grown.

What does Measure O not allow?

Measure O would not allow manufacturing activities associated with cannabis, nor would it allow retail sales — something the county does not currently allow. Some cities in the county do allow retail sales.

The application of conventional pesticides and herbicides to cannabis is generally prohibited in California.

The measure sets a 1,200-foot buffer zone around certain sensitive uses including schools, youth centers and residential neighborhoods.

Measure O does not create any additional tax on processing or distribution of cannabis products.

If Measure O passes…

Based on HdL’s assessment, there are only 220 acres of existing greenhouse in the county that meet the requirements of Measure O. The report highlighted that there are currently only 347.5 acres of greenhouse cultivation of cannabis in the entire state, with 62 acres in Santa Barbara County. The law would not lead to new greenhouse construction, but could result in about 72 new jobs (annual payroll of about $3 million) and four new farmworker housing areas.

Based on the report’s assessment, it is expected that four growers would be active in the county, each with about 60,000 square feet of growing area, or under two acres of greenhouse space used for growing cannabis. But the initiative would not limit the number of growers, just the total acreage, cumulatively, of all growers.

The measure is unlikely, however, to deter illegal cultivation in the nearby national forests, reports HdL, because it does not allow licensed retail sales in the unincorporated county, continuing an incentive for black market, unlicensed

sellers. All licensed growers have to sell to licensed retailers.

So the measure doesn’t create a solution to the black market sale of cannabis products.

HdL notes that licensing growers and sellers can reduce the scope of the illegal black market in cannabis, but also pointed out that their opinion differs from that of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, which in some cases thinks that legal, licensed growers can be “linked to criminal black market operations,” and may be a target of crime including armed robbery.

It is estimated that $2.92 million from cultivation and nurseries would be generated annually in tax revenue.

wo new supervisors will take the oath of office early next year for the Ventura County Board of Supervisors. One of them, Matt LaVere, the current mayor of Ventura, was elected to the District 1 seat in the March primary. The second will be the candidate who wins the most votes from District 5 voters — either Tim Flynn or Carmen Ramirez, both currently serving on the Oxnard City Council as Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem respectively. [Supervisor Kelly Long (Dist. 3) was re-elected to her second term.]

The District 5 race has the opportunity to create the first female majority on the board, or foster a new power dynamic.

But other policy concerns related to climate change, housing, racial and social equality may lead to split votes, with supervisors voting along political party lines. A clear example of this is in the recent adoption of the Ventura County General Plan, which includes a Climate Action Plan with several strong restrictions and prohibitions for the local oil and gas industry. The plan had the support of Steve Bennett (Dist. 1), Linda Parks (Dist. 2) and John Zaragoza (Dist. 5), while Long and Bob Huber (Dist. 4) were the two opposing votes.

In the current District 5 race, voters will choose between two very distinctive voices. On one hand is Carmen Ramirez, a Democrat, who has taken a strong stance in favor of environmental protection and social equity. Tim Flynn, a Republican, has demonstrated a focus on jobs, rebuilding and “the American Dream.”

Forum coverage

On Oct. 6, Flynn and Ramirez participated in a forum moderated by David Maron and hosted by the Ventura County League of Women Voters. The questions were submitted in advance by community members and screened by the league. Questions concerned plans for Channel Islands Harbor and Fisherman’s Wharf, the future of the local fossil fuel industry, area airports and economic recovery from the pandemic.

“Prior to the pandemic, Oxnard and Ventura County had experienced five years of negative or zero economic growth,” said Flynn, saying he will focus on “rebuilding” the local economy.

“Jobs, it’s all about jobs, all about upward social mobility.” He said a place to start is Fisherman’s Wharf.

Ramirez said a strong economy will be a key focus for her if elected, and getting “jobs back, help[ing] businesses” recover from the pandemic. She pointed to her long history as a local attorney working with people helping with “their basic needs, housing, civil rights, benefits when disabled . . . I have the pulse of our community, I know what people need.”

Airports

When asked about the local airports and a potential joint use agreement, Flynn said he’d provide leadership to bring commercial service to the county.

His “number one goal” is “attracting high-paying jobs to the county,” and he said access to commercial air services is key to that goal. He suggested one route could be to partner with the U.S. military to get commercial air service at the base.

Ramirez countered that while she’d be open to hearing about plans for commercial service, she has heard concerns from residents about noise, traffic and other issues related to the existing airports, particularly in Camarillo.

Pandemic recovery

Regarding the impact of COVID-19 on local businesses, Ramirez pointed to her role in oversight with the Ventura County Community Foundation, saying that she “made it my business . . . to ensure Oxnard businesses would not be left out” of the rapid response grant program for small businesses.

She said additional stimulus money from the federal government is key and that she would work with the county to push for that funding as well as work to obtain private funding for local businesses.

Flynn pointed to what he is “doing now,” namely rapid testing, and said that “rapid response management” based on “credible data” is needed to help the county “more effectively manage this crisis.”

Climate change and the fossil fuels industry

Both candidates stated that climate change is real and Flynn said the county does have an important role in carrying out the state’s “aggressive” goals and rules to become carbon neutral. “Ventura County is the number three producer of oil and gas” in the state. He said the transition away from fossil fuels is happening, but that it’s a question of “how to transition” from dependence on fossil fuels. “We can’t throw people out of work.” He said a clear plan is required.

When asked whether the oil and gas industry should be shut down in light of the perception that clean energy jobs pay less, Flynn didn’t directly answer the question, focusing instead on being responsible and training.

“When someone has invested capital…[there] needs to be an amortization of that investment; they expect a return on that money,” explained Flynn. “What is most responsible?

Making sure that every single man and woman that works in an oil [and natural gas] field [gets] the proper job training.”

“I don’t accept the premise” that clean energy jobs pay less, responded Ramriez. She referred to a report that clean energy jobs pay 13 percent more than fossil fuel-based jobs.

“You have to think about what is [going to happen] when the oil industry fades . . . let’s get ahead of it, let’s retrain people.” She added that the industry needs to be held responsible for those workers who “can’t transition.” Ramirez referred to many oil companies going bankrupt and leaving billions of dollars of debt and “liabilities to clean up,” saying that there will also be jobs in cleaning up those sites. She said she won’t “give [oil companies] a pass, they have to take care of their workers.”

Job creation

Both candidates said they will push for strong education for local youth to provide a work force for high-tech jobs, and that local networking infrastructure such as fiber optics needs to be expanded across the county.

“Healthcare” will also be a “huge issue coming forward,” said Ramirez, predicting the arrival of a “silver tsunami” as the Ventura County population ages. She said that jobs associated with the healthcare needs of seniors will be part of boosting the local economy.

“I led the effort to attract Amazon,” said Flynn. After noting that negotiations begun in 2017 weren’t successful at the time, he hinted at an announcement that would be made in the coming week that would “bring higher paying jobs with benefits,” and that he’d “take that accomplishment to county government.” He was referring to the city’s announcement on Oct. 8 that a new Amazon fulfillment center is to be built in Oxnard by the end of 2021, providing 1,500 jobs.

Fisherman’s Wharf

Flynn reported that when first elected mayor, he met with the harbor director and county counsel to say that it was “time that Oxnard has a seat at the table,” and as a result of that meeting an unpopular proposal was turned down by the city. “Bottom line is, this is on the right path [now],” he said, pointing toward the formation of a resident’s committee.

Ramirez stated that “nothing has happened in the past 10 years” at Fisherman’s Wharf and that the area is the “gateway to the Channel Islands” and should be developed into something “everyone can agree on.” She emphasized that she would not allow it to be turned into “Marina del Rey.”

Housing

Flynn said that while the open space agricultural protection law (SOAR) “restricts [the] supply of houses,” he said the demand for housing remains constant and that “is going to raise prices.” He said finding a way to build more housing infill, in city areas like River Park at the Collection, is ideal: “Smart growth,” putting housing close to commercial “so people can walk.”

“I support housing of all types,” Ramirez responded, and said there will need to be effective education provided to the public on the need for denser housing. We may “have to build up” instead of out. “People are living in overcrowded situations. A whole family in a room in a suburban tract house, it’s a horrible way to live; children can’t study.”

Summarizing their goals if they are elected to the supervisor seat, the candidates expressed two very clear — and very different — approaches.

“I got my start [ politically] stopping a liquified natural gas terminal” in Oxnard, recounted Ramirez, and said her goal as supervisor would be to “represent the people who live here . . . to thrive and survive into a cleaner future.”

“If we are going to sustain our lifestyle, if we are going to preserve the quality of life right here . . . [it] cannot come if we don’t have higher paying jobs, it’s about the American Dream. I will take the reins of the board of supervisors and work with [them to bring] the best and highest paying jobs.”

Ventura County voters will determine which vision prevails on Nov. 3.

That’s the plan for this year’s festival, which VLT has hosted for nine years. On Friday evening, Oct. 16, you can gather in your living room, yard or anywhere with a WiFi pickup and digitally stream the festival’s 15 films.

Previously, the VLT screened films at large venues such as the Ventura Credit Union. But like the festival itself, organizers have had to pivot.

“This year is totally different because we are not able to gather in large groups,” said Leslie Velez, Ventura Land Trust Development Director.

T

he ability to create “something delicious” isn’t exactly new to Tony Ybarra, who for nearly 20 years has concocted an abundance of delectable classical, flamenco and jazz music on his guitar, performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Hong Kong.

But when COVID-19 stifled his ability to play live concerts, the Santa Barbara-based guitarist took his creative powers into the kitchen, preparing culinary delights much as he prepares an enticing menu of music.

“I can’t say everything I cook comes out the way I want it to,” chuckles Ybarra. “But cooking exercises a different part of the creative spirit, and I appreciate being able to do that.”

Ybarra’s creative spirit is evident in his music, performed on six albums, at numerous local venues and in concert with (among others) Michael McDonald, Josh Groban, jazz composer Maria Schneider and flamenco guitar virtuoso Adam Del Monte.

Currently, Ybarra serves as director of jazz improvisation and guitar studies at Santa Barbara City College.

He has also taught at Westmont College and USC, after earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in guitar performance from USC’s Thornton School of Music.

“I feel very fortunate to make a living as a full-time guitarist,” he says. “It’s allowed me to travel the world and play with some amazing artists. And I’m blessed to be able to teach and to share knowledge with students in a way that others have shared with me.”

Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Ybarra grew up “with music always in the house, from big band to rock.” At age nine, he began playing trombone, thanks to top-notch music programs in local schools. “It really makes a difference in your education when schools support the arts.”

At age 12, he saw the movie La Bamba — “and that changed my life. I identified with Richie Valens as a Mexican-American musician, since I grew up in a similar environment, and that music just resonated with me. I decided, that’s what I want to do. So I took up guitar, and the first thing I learned to play was ‘La Bamba.’”

At Santa Barbara High School, Ybarra played in band and orchestra; outside school he played in rock bands. “But I saw I couldn’t really make a living playing rock and roll.”

Then at Santa Barbara City College, he met music professor Robert Drake, who became his first “formal” guitar teacher. “He played a style of guitar that included jazz, Latin jazz and flamenco, which I’d never heard but which I was drawn to . . . And at USC, because I had both a jazz and orchestral background, I could fuse it all together as one voice. With the support of an amazing faculty there, I could flourish and find direction as an artist and composer.”

“The world will need music and art”

“It’s been challenging financially with no gigs to play,” admits Ybarra, who also lost two friends to COVID-19. “But I think of the Great Depression, how music still thrived, how people craved it as a release from their troubles. And when COVID ends, the world will need music and art just to heal the soul. Music gives release to those who listen.”

Ybarra is grateful to have established “a great music relationship” with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer (and fellow Santa Barbara resident) McDonald, with whom he is finishing an acoustic guitar album. He also plans to perform livestream concerts via Facebook.

“There is a wonderful symbiotic relationship between audience and musicians,” he says, “and I look forward to enjoying that once again.”

Though his son’s very likable, he’s been fired from every job he’s had, including a well-paying delivery job I recently got him, after they perceived liability from his reckless, race-driving ways. His dad lent him a truck, pays the insurance, pays his cellphone bill, and keeps rescuing him on his rent. He spends his days video gaming, getting stoned, and online dating. I was looking forward to getting married, but I don’t want my house at risk when his son calls for a bailout. I’m also not sure I want a man who doesn’t advance his kids to independence.

Childhood goes so fast. It’s only a matter of time before Cody is 85 and expected to post his own bail.

Your boyfriend is acting out of empathy for his son. Empathy is taken for granted as a beautiful thing, but it has a dark side. It comes from the German word, “einfuhlung,” meaning “in-feeling” or “feeling into.” Obviously, we can’t actually tap into another person’s feelings, but psychologist Lynn O’Connor explains that when we witness another person’s suffering, our “empathy system is alerted, almost as if we were suffering ourselves.”

Our initial flare of empathy, this “feeling into” another’s suffering, happens automatically.

Once we experience it, explain neuroscientists Olga Klimecki and Tania Singer, our empathy can go one of two ways: into unhealthy “empathic distress” or healthy “empathic concern.”

Empathic distress is empathy that quickly turns “me-focused.” We start feeling really bad about how bad we feel in the wake of our friend’s empathy-triggering suffering — to the point that we’re prone to duck our uncomfortable feelings by avoiding our suffering

friend. (Nice, huh?) Empathic concern, on the other hand, motivates us to channel our empathy into action. We ask ourselves, “What can I do to alleviate this person’s suffering?” and then get to it.

However, even healthy empathic concern has a dark side. You can alleviate somebody’s immediate suffering but ultimately hurt them long-term, like when you show them that Daddy’s always there to mop up after their irresponsible behavior with a big wad of dollars.

Possibly saving your relationship

Of course, actual helping is judicious helping, like a tough-love refusal to make the consequences of Slacker Boy’s actions magically disappear. You get this, and you told me you’ve brought it up to your boyfriend “like once a month,” framing it in “constructive terms.”

That isn’t working, in large part because Dad has a habit that seems to serve him (at least on the immediate level): Son crashes and burns; Dad swoops in to sweep up the wreckage, and he gets that quick hit of “feel better.”

So, though your boyfriend appears to be listening when you talk, he isn’t really hearing you; that is, really taking it in and then opening his mind to the possibility that you’re right. Only if he really hears you will you see whether he can look critically at his enabling and accept the immediate emotional pain it takes to do what’s best for his son and your relationship long-term.

Empathy is taken for granted as a beautiful thing, but it has a dark side. starts with understanding the complicated mix here. Though Dad is taking action on his son’s behalf (as per empathic concern), he’s probably driven by empathic distress: a longing to immediately alleviate the pain he feels from his son being in trouble. This is pathological empathy: empathy that ultimately harms both the person it’s intended to help and the person doing the helping.

For example, in addition to the negative effect on your relationship, you noted (in an email replying to questions I’d asked you) that endlessly picking up his

There’s also a DIY option from psychotherapist Nathaniel Branden. Spend 12 hours together in a hotel room: no books, TV, smartphones, naps, or walks outside. Except for bathroom breaks, you remain together at all times. Branden told me that when all “avenues of escape are closed off,” couples experience real breakthroughs in communication.

If you try either or both of these techniques, and your boyfriend still won’t come around, you’ll at least know you’ve done all you could to try to save your relationship.
