Organic waste the focus for recycling in 2020

ith the new year comes a new area of focus for recycling. Until now, recycling has focused mostly on items like cans, bottles, paper, cardboard and plastic. A Jan. 1, 2020 target set by California Senate Bill (SB) 1383 (which was passed in 2016) directs California to recycle half of all organic waste. It also set a much more ambitious mandate for California to boost organic waste recycling to 75 percent by 2025.

“Organic waste” and “organics” are terms used to describe waste originating from living organisms and capable of being turned into compost, mulch or biofuel.

Examples of organics in this context include yard waste, such as grass clippings and tree prunings, as well as food scraps, discarded lumber, manure and biosolids (sewage sludge). These items comprise approximately two-thirds of the material disposed by Ventura County residents and businesses.

Targeting organics for recycling has some of the same benefits as other recycling efforts. Resources will be conserved rather than being buried in landfills; jobs will be created, funded at least partly through the recovered value of products produced from recycled material; and landfill space will be saved. Focusing on organics recycling, however, is now a priority for two different reasons.

The first reason: methane emission reduction.

According to the website of the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle), “methane emissions resulting from the decomposition of organic waste in landfills are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions contributing to global climate change.”

Secondly, responsibly managing organic waste will also redirect edible food waste from landfills to Californians in need. CalRecycle’s website notes that approximately 17 percent of statewide landfill disposal is food, and much of that food would be edible if it could be safely rescued and redirected to the “food insecure.”

In Ventura County, 16.6 percent of the population is “food insecure,” according to the website of our local

food bank, Food Share. In fact, food insecurity is so severe, 69 percent of those identified as food insecure had to choose between food and utilities in the previous six months, according to a Food Share survey of clients.

SB1383 set an additional goal of recovering “20 percent of currently disposed edible food . . . for human consumption by 2025.”

Ventura County jurisdictions all have separate curbside collection for yard clippings and local edible food recovery programs are growing, so local cities and the county have helped the state toward its Jan. 1 target.

Waste-Free VC Coalition, a local group led by the Ventura County Public Health Department, has been key to the growth of food rescue and recovery programs, using a CalRecycle $500,000 grant to launch several initiatives.

SB1383 calls for enforcement of mandates to begin in 2022, and you can help your community comply by using your yard waste cart or hauling your yard clippings, tree trimmings and lumber to compost and mulch facilities.

Some businesses also have enough landscape refuse to order a separate bin for yard waste, and a few have food waste composting programs. You can also divert food waste through home composting or a worm box, and food waste prevention can be accomplished through methods detailed at sites such as savethefood.com. Donating to local food rescue organizations such as Food Share or Food Forward is also important for helping Ventura County meet the state’s mandates.

Some previous types of recycling depended on overseas companies to manufacture discards into products.

Organics recycling will depend on local composting, mulching, food waste reduction and food recovery.

PACC on rough track to stay open In a statement on Jan. 3, the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation (OPACC) announced that it has concluded negotiations with the city of Oxnard for the facility to remain open through March 1, 2020, with OPACC managing the site while the city finalizes negotiations with Sterling Venue Ventures for longerterm management.

“We are ecstatic that final negotiations are in the works between the city of Oxnard and Sterling Venue Ventures and anticipate securing our role as the 501c3 nonprofit representing and working on behalf of the community’s interests very soon,” said Carolyn Mullin, executive director with OPACC, the nonprofit organization that currently manages the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center (the PACC). She emphasized that the center does not expect much revenue in the next 60 days.

“As part of the six-month extension agreement (July through December 2019) with the city of Oxnard, we had to cancel all events for 2020 that were on the books,” said Mullin via email to the VCReporter. She did compile a list of potential events to pass along to a new operator but was barred from booking events in January and February until the two-month extension was authorized on Jan. 3. Mullin said by that time, the larger events, like weddings and quinceañeras, had found other locations. “Currently we are not allowed to book anything past March 1, 2020, which further complicates cash flow. Compared to last year, we pulled in almost $60,000 in revenue in January and February.” This year, “we’re looking at $6,000.”

Local turtle rescue caring for trafficked turtles The Turtle Conservancy in Ojai is providing long-term care to some of the 300 endangered and vulnerable turtles that were seized as a result of a two-year, multi-agency, international poaching investigation conducted by the U.S. Wildlife Service and U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The turtles are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. In the seize were seven turtle species, including Florida and eastern box turtles, North American wood turtles, spotted turtles, diamondback terrapins, yellow-blotched map turtles and a single Blanding’s turtle.

Xiao Dong Qin, 34, of Shanghai worked with an unindicted partner in Eugene, Ore., to purchase the turtles from sellers in nine states valued at over $250,000 in the Chinese pet trade.

In a statement the conservancy said that the turtles will not be able to be released to the wild. Qin pleaded guilty and agreed to pay $8,000 in restitution fees, which will be split among the three rescue facilities caring for the turtles. He will be

sentenced in February and faces up to 10 years in prison.

New Year surprise for Oxnard family Baby Gomez-Gonzalez was the first birth of 2020 at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.

His arrival surprised the family by arriving about a week early. The healthy baby boy weighed in at 6 pounds, 2 ounces and measured 19 inches long.

Oxnard-based CEMEX to pay for hazardous spill CEMEX Construction Materials Pacific, LLC (CEMEX) has entered into a civil environmental settlement with the Ventura County District Attorney following a 2018 spill of hazardous waste related to its Oxnard operations. Part of the settlement includes a $37,000 civil penalty to be split between the Department of Toxic Substances Control, the Oxnard Fire Department and the District Attorney’s Office.

Mobile home park went days without water Around 300, mostly elderly, residents of the Vallecito Mobile Home Park in Newbury Park were without water for 65 hours after a three-inch water line 12 feet underground ruptured. Initial repairs were not successful.

“The issue came to our attention via a call for service to ‘check the wellbeing’ on an elderly subject at the location,” said Patrick Maynard, interim director of the Ventura County Office of Emergency Services.

The exact cause of the rupture is “unknown,” he said, “other than the pipe was old.”

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office learned of the issue on Jan. 1 and a response was initiated with several agencies — including the city of Thousand Oaks, Thousand Oaks Police Department and American Red Cross — working with Sun Communities, the corporation that owns the mobile home park, to supply bottled water and bring in a water truck for “sanitary needs.”

Portable restrooms were also brought into the park.

Water service was restored on Jan. 2, with an initial “boil water” order for the first 24 hours.

ith a propensity for earthquakes, year-round fire season, king tides, mudslides and now tornados, personal preparedness is a day-to-day part of California Central Coast living.

But with emergency incidents increasing in frequency and intensity, pressure on local agencies is mounting to demonstrate that they have all segments of the community in mind as they develop emergency response plans.

What is the appropriate role of local government in emergency response planning? What is the most efficient?

“Personal preparedness is key,” said Patrick Maynard, interim director for the Ventura County Office of Emergency Services. “Government has limited resources, and the last thing I want to do is overpromise. For those sitting back and expecting government to come in and save the day for every last person, [that]

yourself up for failures. Plan ahead, help yourself and help your neighbors whenever possible.”

He emphasized this for people living in high-hazard areas. “Plan and prepare, know the alternative ways in and out. Contemplate alternative routes.” He pointed out that local agencies are unlikely to be efficient at determining the best way in and out of an area, as that can be dependent on how an event unfolds.

This is just one reason the county isn’t preparing an emergency plan for any and all hazards, as suggested by a recent audit of emergency policies and plans. Ventura County is one of three counties (Butte and Sonoma are the other two) in the state that may not be adequately planning to provide support to particular populations of people in the event of an emergency. These populations include elderly people who don’t drive, homebound individuals without family to help, the mentally ill and those who don’t speak English.

STATE FINDS COUNTY PREPAREDNESS LACKING “Ventura [is] not as prepared as they could be to protect their residents during future natural disasters because they have not followed key practices for emergency planning,” states the report, “California Is Not Adequately Prepared to Protect Its Most Vulnerable Residents from Natural Disasters,” which was released in early December 2019 by the California State Auditor. The report cites the lack of a “specific plan for critical emergency functions,” such as lining up sources for accessible transportation and shelter supplies in advance, as an example of how the county is not aligning with these “key practices,” and thus failing to address the needs of the entire community.

Maynard points to the positive response outcomes following the Thomas and Woolsey fires and that the county is preparing to complete a Community Needs Assessment this year as evidence that the policies in place in the county are sufficient and do provide the

needed response for all residents.

“We are working internally to identify what that process will look like,” said Maynard. It is likely to include aggregate data about general needs in particular areas. But, he points out, having that info won’t necessarily “change the response,” pointing to the fact that the county’s response is often “dynamic,” depending on how the event unfolds and needs arise.

As an example, he explained that even if it was known that there was a concentration of 25 people in West Ventura who were in wheelchairs, that would not alter the county’s response. “Our response now already plans for that population being there. We don’t need to know precise numbers . . . We know we need the resources on hand; we distribute them as the situation dictates.”

Another finding in the state’s report with which Maynard disagreed regards the need for the county to get information about the number of people receiving in-home care, who may not be able to evacuate themselves. Maynard says state law prohibits that information from being shared until a threat is “imminent,” but the report cites other areas have been able to get general information without names and addresses, thus protecting the individual’s privacy.

A bill, SB794, introduced on Jan. 7 by Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, will improve emergency alert systems for vulnerable populations by allowing local governments to access information about residents with particular access needs and other disabilities that may make eva c u at i n g in an emergency hard or impossible.

“The Ventura County Office State Auditor’s report on California’s most deadly wildfires made clear that we must do more to help our most vulnerable residents in the event of a natural disaster,” said Jackson in a written statement.

She said the bill will help “local governments identify those with access and functional needs

so they can more effectively assist them when the next disaster strikes. Ensuring all residents have the information and assistance they need during an emergency is a matter of life or death.”

“Generally speaking in Ventura County, we are pretty proud of the coordination process for evacuation. We have a pretty robust process internally that we use — several stakeholders, experts like hydrologists with watershed protection, geologists — to evaluate the dynamics of whatever the incident presents with.”

While he explained that the process is “not documented in the form of a plan,” Maynard related that when this process was used in the response for Thomas and Woolsey, “we had great success with it.” The groups and stakeholders are identified early on and throughout the incident there are conference calls, sometimes multiple times a day, between police, fire, city agencies and special districts, all of whom are involved in determining responses beginning to end — from evacuation orders to repopulation. “We do that every well.”

When asked about how first responders know that process or how it could be replicated if leadership were to change, Maynard said that his office is going to “document the process in a response guide” — but that it won’t be a “tactical”level document as recommended by the report.

According to Maynard, that “would result in a 3,000 page plan that would not do anyone much good.”

Instead, he emphasized the need to be able to respond fluidly in the wake of each event in each community.

Maynard did agree that the county would benefit from building partnerships with communitybased organizations serving of Emergency Services different populations of people, and “leverage” the reach and work of those groups in local emergency response planning. E

very piece of art holds more than what we see painted on a canvas or captured on film. Whatever the medium, the message carries the weight and measure of a lifetime. Everything that has come before in an artist’s life is laid out before us. It might not be readily visible in the brush strokes or in the shadows of a photograph, but it’s there.

One must consider the context in which art was created in order to fully see it. Where the artist is coming from will determine where the art will take us.

The works of Meleko Mokgosi and Carlton Wilkinson, on display at California Lutheran University, are wonderful examples of this.

They hold a magnitude of beauty and power, not just because they are fine works of art but because of the meaning they possess. The works reflect our history back to us. They show us our blind spots. They celebrate humanity just as they confront us with the ugliness that humans are capable of. They illuminate the past and, if we pay attention, they light a better way forward.

Meleko Mokgosi: Acts of Resistance, on view at the William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art from Jan. 22 through April 9, is a collection of large-scale paintings and drawings. A Brooklyn-based artist and an associate professor of art at Yale University, Mokgosi was born in Francistown, Botswana. Curator Rachel Schmid explains that “Mokgosi is interested in the narrative of post-colonial theory.” On the surface, the subjects of his work might not seem like activists or revolutionaries, but they are. “The heart of his work is power dynamics,” says Schmid. “Who has it and how is it being wielded?”

Schmid points out a painting entitled “Pax Kaffraria Graase Mans.” In it, Schmid says, “Black domestic workers are caring for a white child on a front porch. Mokgosi explained that there is a lot of nuance around front porches . . . Who is able to be seen on the front porch?”

This, of course, is referring to the apartheid-

era rule requiring domestic workers to use the back entrance of their white employers’ homes. When seen from this perspective, the painting takes on a whole new significance.

Mokgosi’s detailed drawings of Africanis and Boerboel dogs may seem straightforward enough, but then consider that these breeds were bred as guard dogs to protect white landowners in South Africa. “The dogs were essentially created to preserve colonial estates,” explains Schmid.

In “Walls of Casbah II,” Mokgosi focuses on actual museum labels used in the exhibit Walls of Algiers: Narratives of the City (Getty Center, 2009). By writing notes in the margins and crossing out passages on the labels, Mokgosi calls out language that perpetuates power dynamics and cultural biases. As explained on Mokgosi’s website, the work “addresses the problematic reinscription of colonial discourses.” These “presumably neutral educational descriptors” are anything but. Schmid adds that “on their face value [the museum labels] are very innocuous but seeing how Mokgosi brings out the language, we see how [colonialism] is still perpetuated.”

Mokgosi calls on us to look for a deeper, more nuanced meaning in the images around us. So too does photographer Carlton Wilkinson. On view in the Kwan Fong Gallery from Jan. 10 through Feb. 29, Spiritual Bodies: Photography by Carlton Wilkinson combines two previous exhibits of his work, African Male Museum and On the Altar of Liberty.

Schmid explains that the idea for African Male Museum began when Wilkinson was growing up in Nashville. From when he was a child, Wilkinson noticed that there were not a lot of black male nudes in Western art and that all the statues in public spaces were of white men. When the black male body was depicted in art, Wilkinson often found it to be seen as hyper-sexual, aggressive or dangerous.

So, as Schmid explains, in the 1980s, Wilkinson decided to reimagine how artists and art viewers see the black male by spinning the idea of what a powerful black body is.

In “Son to Son Eye to Eye,” a father gently holds his young child, while lovers tenderly embrace in “Together.” Wilkinson’s photogra-

phy shows an intimacy and a gentleness that is paired with tremendous strength. Wilkinson’s usage of light is also meant to turn convention on its head. “Lighting has been geared towards white skin tones,” explains Schmid, who adds that Wilkinson once noted that “it’s hard to find yourself reflected back at you.” In response, Wilkinson beautifully captures different skin tones within the same photograph.

The works included in On the Altar of Liberty were taken while Wilkinson was on a pilgrimage through the American South documenting churches that played a part in pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement. As part of his MFA studies at UCLA, Wilkinson interviewed pastors and parishioners with firsthand accounts as part of an oral narrative to capture, in his words, “the black collective memory.”

The photographs are stark and dramatic.

One especially powerful image is of the 16th Street Baptist Church, where four black girls were murdered when the church was bombed in 1963. Another photograph, entitled “Mount Zion,” shows three crosses that represent the civil rights workers who were murdered by a sheriff and the KKK in Mississippi in 1964.

Cemeteries in the South were segregated at the time, so the men — two of whom were white and one of whom was black — could not be buried together. The crosses, however, stand side by side, enabling the men to be honored together.

Taken at face value, the works of Meleko Mokgosi and Carlton Wilkinson warrant attention and make for a memorable visit to the galleries. Taken in context, however, they are more than art that deserves to be seen. Learning experiences Eric Johnson reflects on success,

or Eric Johnson, it didn’t take long for him to see how fickle life in the music business can be.

Coming off an acclaimed debut, Tones, Johnson earned considerable notice among guitar fans for his playing prowess and ability to craft compelling instrumental rock compositions.

He went into his sophomore effort, Ah Via Musicom (1990), wanting to earn his stripes again, having moved from Warner Brothers to Capitol Records.

“Things were going pretty good because we’d put Tones out on Warner Brothers, but they weren’t sure if they wanted to pursue another record and decided that we should go somewhere else,” Johnson recalls. “So I worked super-hard [on Ah Via Musicom] and I would just do it over and over until I felt I was playing it well enough. That record was a lot of hard work to get it to be the way it was. I think when you have a responsibility or pressure to be the best at what you do or if you’re supposed to be good at this certain thing, the question is how do you interpret that? If I interpret that as having to go into the studio and record one note at a time and make it absolutely perfect, that might not be the most [ideal] way to handle those types, kinds of expectations. And I think at the time, that’s how I was interpreting [what people expected].”

With “Cliffs of Dover” becoming the guitarist’s signature instrumental and a hit single, as well as winning a GRAMMY for Best Rock Instrumental, Ah Via Musicom topped a million units sold, while spawning two additional hit singles, “Trademark” and “Righteous.”

While the success of Ah Via Musicom gave him more leeway with Capitol Records higher-ups, Johnson’s perfectionist tendencies found him again going over budget with the follow-up, Venus Isle (1996), which led to his getting dropped by the label after the album failed to match the commercial success of its predecessor.

— Eric Johnson That didn’t curtail Johnson’s career, though. He has gone on to release four more studio albums: Souvenir (2002), Bloom (2005), Up Close (2010) and Eclectic (2014) on various independent labels.

In addition to his own work, he’s performed Joe Satriani’s G3 guitar player’s tour and gigged with the ad-hoc group Alien Love Child.

Today, Johnson looks back at his crossover success and subsequent issues with his record labels as a learning experience.

“I don’t have any kind of bitter attitude about record labels or that music scene. But I think it’s really important to look at it honestly,” he says. “Yes, it can be a wolf in sheep’s clothing, but it is what it is. But it’s temporal. One minute, you’ve got the red carpet and the next minute, you’ve got the locked door. It really depends on how in vogue you are. Now, I think the better way to interpret expectations is to try to be a little deeper or a little more soulful. It’s a process of unlearning a lot of stuff you learned that may not have been necessary to pack on your back

and carry around.”

Originally inspired to play music by a guitar-playing family friend who came over to the house and played some numbers by bluesmen Elmore James and Jimmy Reed, Johnson started woodshedding when he was 11. Over the next decade, his skills grew as he put in time with local fusion group The Electromagnets before going solo and earning his own cult following. He also wound up being a session guitarist for a number of higher profile artists, including Christopher Cross, Cat Stevens and Carole King, which gave him creative insights to which he might not have otherwise been exposed.

“It was really cool to be around songsmiths like that and to see how important a song was to them. That was what it was about. It was a really good learning experience for me to see that,” he explains.

Another key influence was the late Jimi Hendrix, and Johnson has joined other top-flight guitarists on multiple editions of the Experience Hendrix tour, which pays tribute to the late guitarist.

While many guitarists are awed by Hendrix’s guitar playing, Johnson says when he first heard the Hendrix debut album, Are You Experienced, just before it arrived in stores, he was struck more by the songwriting and how the guitar playing served the songs themselves.

“That’s not to say I wasn’t impressed by his awesome playing and musicianship,” Johnson says. “But I think more importantly I was inspired by him because he had this message and direction of wanting to create music that spoke to people. And playing great guitar stuff was just part of it.”

To start the new year, he’s doing a solo tour billed as “Classics: Present and Past,” which figures to find Johnson playing fanfavorite selections from across his career.

There’s also new music on the horizon, as he is readying a new studio album. The guitarist says it features all original material save for a cover of a Beatles song, but will be a departure from his usual pluggedin sound.

“It started off as an acoustic guitar and an acoustic piano record and still is,” Johnson says of his most recent album. “But a lot of it, I ended up putting bass and drums [on it] and overdubbing electric guitar. So it’s kind of a mishmash of an acoustic record and an electric record.”

Knowing it was going to be a largely acoustic album made Johnson approach his songwriting a bit differently and focus less on solos and his playing.

Too many places aim for efficiency over quality, with quickly prepared, overcooked cuisine that manages — despite ample grease and excessive amounts of sauce — to lack something in the flavor department.

When I found myself in Camarillo Plaza on a weekday afternoon looking for a bite, Sesame Garden was, admittedly, not my first choice. But it was close to 3 p.m., a time when many restaurants enjoy a post-lunch/pre-dinner siesta — and this humble-looking Chinese food joint was open. as I could, settling on the orange chicken. I also ordered a serving of pot stickers . . . simply because they sounded good.

Lunch specials include soup and rice, and the hot and sour soup came up first. It was lovely, filled with tofu, tender-crisp carrots, bamboo shoots, and other vegetables. This version was quite tasty, with a nice sour tang . . . although I think a little more spice would have been an improvement.

The pot stickers were served shortly thereafter, and were definitely a highlight of the meal. The eight perfectly formed pillows were a beautiful golden brown on exactly one side, ivory everywhere else. . . very, very tempting. They tasted as good as they looked: tender and moist but not even a little greasy, with their ground chicken centers delicately perfumed with ginger and onion. I knew I couldn’t eat everything, but I didn’t regret ordering them. (Neither did my 13-year-old son, who practically inhaled them the moment I came home with the to-go container.)

Lunch specials run $8-$10, and you definitely get your money’s worth. In addition to the soup, I was served a large platter with a generous helping of succulent orange chicken, delicate fried rice and a shredded carrot/cabbage salad lightly dressed in rice vinegar. The crisp salad was a great complement to the battered, fried chicken hunks, which came liberally glazed in a rich orange sauce. The chicken was wonderfully crispy and piping hot — straight from the wok, probably — and its sweet, tangy sauce was flavorful but oily. Delicious, yes, but heavy — and again, I craved more spice.

When all was said and done, I had a very satisfying meal that, for the most part, met my standards for Chinese cuisine. Everything was fresh and hot, with a homemade touch. I definitely intend to return for some noodles, and perhaps a few lighter vegetable-based dishes. The restaurant does a lot of take-out and delivery business (no wonder everyone is so efficient!) so perhaps that opportunity will arrive soon.

Sesame Garden was not what I expected when I wandered in, but it did remind me that some surprises can be delightful indeed. ♦

omen are so mean. I’m the new girl at work, having started my job two weeks ago. Yesterday, I had a date after work, so I wore my date outfit to the office.

It wasn’t scandalous, but it was a little sexier than my usual workwear. I was in a bathroom stall, and I overheard two female co-workers talking about me: mean, nasty, catty talk.

And really, my outfit was not terribly revealing. Why are women so awful to one another?

This sort of catty little gossip fest is a female specialty — an underhanded form of aggression against women who dare to commandeer male eyeballs.

For women, competition for mates is a beauty contest. (Sorry, but Miss Congeniality doesn’t cut it.) While it’s good to be a good-looking man, for men, appearance just doesn’t matter as much as it does for women. Because women get pregnant and left with mouths to feed, women evolved to prioritize finding a “provider” — a man who’s willing and able to commit resources — over landing some Mr. Adonis. Men know this, having co-evolved with women. They’re more likely to dis each other and also trash each other to the ladies over how much money they make than, say, how tight their pants are.

In short, if you’re an ugly millionaire, it’s best if you’re a man.

However, if you’re a hot barista or pizza delivery person, you’ll still get plenty of dates — if you’re a woman. Because men evolved to prioritize physical appearance in mates, women will band together to punish other women for wearing skimpy, revealing clothes or just for being physically attractive. Women

seem to recognize that other women do this. Research by social psychologist Jaimie Arona Krems suggests that women tend to dress defensively — wear less revealing clothes and dampen their attractiveness — when they’ll be around other women that they aren’t already friends with.

Prior research (by psychologist Joyce Benenson, among others) finds that girls and women tend to be vicious to newcomers in a way boys

alone . . . perhaps because our friends have our backs.”

As for you, knowing this, when you’re going to be around women you aren’t yet friends with, you might want to take it down a notch in sexy or wait till you’re leaving work to slinky it up. Remember, as Michelle Obama said, “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish” — for example, hacking into the new office hottie’s LinkedIn and promoting her to “Vice President of Lap Dances.”

Self-acceptance involves your embracing your whole self — all of your qualities and characteristics, positive and negative. and men are not. For women, there generally seem to be “costs from incorporating a female newcomer,” Krems explained to me. The women we already know — “even those we can have some conflict with — may be less competitive with us. At times, their gains can be our gains. And very often, female friends protect one another” — sometimes from other women’s aggression. “In fact, we might even dress a little more revealingly ... when we’re with our female friends than when we’re heading out

I’m a gay man, and I’ve developed a crush on my best friend, despite his not being my type at all. He’s very confident, and I kind of want to be him. I have many insecurities, and a mutual friend suggested what I really find attractive is how my best friend knows everything about me and accepts me anyway. Ideally, the process of feeling good about yourself is not modeled on siphoning somebody’s gas.

There’s a key word in “self-acceptance” — a big how-to clue — and it’s “self.” Self-acceptance involves your

embracing your whole self — all of your qualities and characteristics, positive and negative. Psychologist Nathaniel Branden explained, “ ‘Accepting’ does not necessarily mean ‘liking’ ” or that there’s no need for improvement. It means recognizing you’re a package deal, and you can’t have the good stuff about you (like, say, your kindness) without the stuff that needs improvement (like how your housekeeping style is right out of Better Landfills and Dumpsters).

To crank up self-acceptance, recognize that it’s not just a feeling but an action — something you do: deciding to like yourself (and even love yourself) as a human work in progress.

When you do the job of accepting yourself, you no longer need to slot somebody in as a romantic partner simply because they don’t find you repellant. 5. Letters of Administration with Will Annexed were issued on March 27, 2019.

6. The Special Administrator was empowered to: a. Address the contract issue with Voyager International, including commencing suit to enforce rights and defending against suits under the contract; and b. Negotiate the consequences of Decedent’s death under the contract, including determining the value of goods the estate receives and arranging for the eventual liquidation of said goods.

Pursuant to this authority, the Special Administrator and her legal counsel have investigated the facts relating to the contractual arrangement between the Decedent and Voyager International. That investigation included visiting the premises of Voyager International in Gainsville, Florida; and interviewing Richard Mutschler, the proprietor of the store operated in that location.

In communications with Mr. Mutschler and with counsel for Voyager International, it became clear that Voyager International would contest any claim that the Decedent’s estate might have to

recover any goods in which the estate might claim an interest or to recover the value of any inventory that had already been sold. In fact, Voyager International suggested that the estate potentially would owe Voyager International a sum of money equal to or in excess of the value of the inventory based on the theory that the estate is responsible for the contractual obligations of the Decedent to Voyager International.

Based on the investigation and these communications, the Special Administrator concluded that pursuing claims in litigation to recover any goods and/or the value of any goods already sold would be extremely costly, that the outcome of any such litigation would be uncertain and that the cost of the litigation likely would be more than the value of any recovery. The Special Administrator’s primary objectives were to ensure that Voyager International would not assert claims in the probate proceedings, and, if such claims were asserted, that they would be defeated. The goal was to protect any probate and non-probate assets of the Decedent from claims

by Voyager International.

Under Probate Code Section 9100, the deadline for Voyager International or any other alleged creditor of the estate to make a claim expired on July 27, 2019. By that time, Voyager International had not filed a claim in the probate proceedings. As a result, Voyager International has voluntarily waived its right to pursue any claims relating to the Decedent’s estate.

Under these circumstances, the Special Administrator has determined that it is in the best interest of the estate to abandon any claims relating to Voyager International and, at the earliest practicable time, for the Public Administrator to complete the probate proceedings and to close out the estate. The Special Administrator will submit to the court for reimbursement invoices reflecting the legal expenses incurred in connection with the Voyager International claims.

7. All costs of administration have been paid, including cost of publication and the probate referee’s fees.

8. No claim has been filed with the court.

9. No requests for special notice have been filed in this proceeding.

10. Petitioner requests that the court make an order terminating the special administration of the estate and discharging the special administrator.
