Trump series finale goes rogue

A

ll presidencies have been a little like reality shows since the 1950s, when the president was able to speak to the people of this country through television. Before that, it was radio, and before that newspapers. But the last 20 years, since 24-hour news dominated our news prism, we have seen each president live out their term with watchdogs surrounding them. The news was usually about their policies or actions, but not necessarily them. While President Ronald Reagan was an actor who became president, Barack Obama was the first “celebrity” president, with his charisma and convention speech abilities. His use of the media to push agendas and gain international support showed us a window of the future of leadership.

So, in 2016, when America elected Donald Trump, much of that support stemmed from his ability to play the media, and his presidency was like four seasons of The Apprentice, with mass amounts of firings and turnover, Trump having his kids by his side and a finale —

a wild series finale — with a mass riot and the president being banned from Twitter.

What makes this all so surreal is that this tragic and bloody end is everything Never Trumpers predicted and for which they were laughed at by independents and conservatives who built the pathway to power for the Trump brand.

The last two and a half months have seen Trump attack fair elections, destroy faith in our democracy, be cited as a potential safety risk with his dog whistle tweets, inspire a group of MAGA supporters dressed in red hats and bear suits breaking into the halls of Congress on Jan. 6 and finally a second impeachment. It took 2021 less than a week for America to become a cross of Cobra Kai’s Season 2 high school karate battle and a special episode of South Park.

What President-elect Joe Biden has ahead of him is a near impossible task, with over 75 million Americans believing their vote was annulled. Chatter about secession has been hovering over red states,

with Texas coming up again and again as the potential first fruit.

To say Biden is entering Abraham Lincoln-like circumstances would not be a stretch. The country is split, no doubt, and organized violence has occurred against the tenements of our democracy, yet maybe the only saving grace is that the binary oppositions dwell amongst each other instead of separated by physical borders as in 1860. Georgia, Texas and Virginia are examples of states split down political lines, yet there was a time when the consensuses were more in line with each other. So, the fear of secession is not one to stay up at night over analyzing.

Biden will have to find a way to confront the rioters who stormed the capital building, stealing items and vandalizing property, and convince them conspiracies are off. Biden will need to work with Republicans to create bipartisan legislation on issues all Americans can agree on. Healthcare and student loan relief would be a good place to start, as many would ben-

efit from both sides of the political aisle. What will be the hardest part is overcoming the rhetoric coming from Trump’s media bandwagon. Many on the right are crying hypocrisy when it comes to the “patriots” versus the summer BLM “looters” because the arrests are coming hard and many of those Jan. 6 rebels are now on no-fly lists. This group of aggravated and agitated citizens was sold a bill of goods by Trump, talk radio and Fox News hosts who danced dangerously between political conspiracy and revolution talk. The result was a black eye for the United States history books.

Trump’s reign of rule by media is over. Without his Twitter account, he can’t engage the same way as he did before. While I believe Twitter, as a private company, has the right to expel who it wants, it may have poked the bear too hard here. People feel stifled and shutting down a current president feels like an overreach of power. Who is next?

Could be anyone at this point.

As we begin the Biden reality show that is American news, just remember that the promise was a restoration of values and tradition. That might be boring as hell, but I think we all can take a little more boring these days.

“Contaminants of Potential Concern” State seeks input on cleanup at W. Ventura site

hrough Feb. 10, the public is being asked to provide input to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) regarding a plan for protecting human health and the environment related to contaminants at an 8.5-acre site in West Ventura where Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) is planning to update its natural gas compressor facilities.

Contaminants of Potential Concern (COPC) including lead, arsenic, carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (cPAHs) and other compounds have been identified in both soil and soil vapor at a site located at 1555 West Olive Street in Ventura, just behind E.P. Foster Elementary School.

The public is being asked to weigh in on the 145-page Removal Action Workplan (RAW), which includes the results of groundwater, soil and vapor testing. Recommendations in the RAW include: excavation of nearly 1,700 cubic yards or 2,500 tons of “shallow soil” determined to contain “carcinogenic PAHs, TPH [total petroleum hydrocarbons], arsenic and lead,” approximately 106 truck trips to transport the contaminated soil for treatment and/or disposal, then another 106 truck trips to bring in clean fill to backfill the excavated site. The plan includes the adoption of an operations plan to “address vapor intrusion risks within the proposed compressor building” that SoCalGas plans to build. Finally, the plan introduces a “Land Use Covenant to prevent residential development or other sensitive uses” at the site.

According to the federal Environmental Protection Agency, PAHs “are a class of chemicals that occur naturally in coal, crude oil and gasoline.” PAHs produced when those compounds are burned “can bind to or form small particles in the air.”

PAHs along with TPH, arsenic and total lead were significant constituents found in shallow soil samples (surface to five feet) at the site. Lead and arsenic were detected above screening levels at two locations.

The report states that “the removal of cPAHs [carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons] to background levels will ensure that health risks” associated with the southern area of the site “do not pose a greater risk than that posed by ambient concentrations.”

The cleanup plan for the property focuses on contaminants in soil and resulting vapor that are being attributed to the activities of Ventura Manufacturing Gas Plant (MGP), a company that used crude oil to manufacture gas from 1905 to 1919 and finally closed in 1920. For 100 years contaminants from that company’s activities have stayed in the soil and are today being found in the vapor around the soil.

Significant concentrations of TPH were found in deeper soil and state records report those findings “correlate with impacted groundwater from upgradient sources” from two neighborhing parcels.

Indoor air quality risks include naphthalene, “assumed to volatilize to indoor air spaces,” being named as “the largest contributor to risk.” This was related to indoor situations only at the new compressor building being proposed by SoCalGas. Groundwater investigations at the site used a total of 38 groundwater monitoring wells connected to various parcels at the property. Eight of those wells were included in inquiries related to an underground storage tank investigation, which identified multiple chemicals in the groundwater including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX), naphthalene, benzopyrene, methyl tert butyl ether

(MTBE), indicators of common Earth image. motor fuel, trichloroethene and vinyl chloride. Those findings led to an in-situ chemical oxidation groundwater remediation program that was overseen by the Ventura County Resource Management Agency, and reportedly wrapped up in 2013. Significant constituents related to the MGP operations that were found in shallow soil include TPH, arsenic and lead.

Summaries of the proposal describe investigations that occured in February and March 2020, which found “concentrations of some volatile organic compounds in soil vapor samples,” which “exceeded screening levels” at the south area of the site.

n Jan. 15, Ventura County released a statement and link to an interactive map reporting the known coronavirus outbreaks — defined as three or more cases — since Jan. 1, 2021.

The map provides business names and types that include places of worship, retails stores and restaurants that have had outbreaks defined by state and federal criterion and have “worked with Ventura County Public Health in mitigating the COVID-19 virus within their facility.”

The Jan. 15 statement noted, “The placement of a business on this list is not necessarily indicative of a current or ongoing outbreak. Inclusion on this list does not suggest neglect or wrongdoing on the part of the facility. Each facility is working with VCPH and taking

all of the recommended steps to ensure a safe work place.”

The map reports that on Jan. 6, 2021, Ojai Valley Inn and Spa and Limoneira, an agricultural operations facility in Santa Paula, reported outbreaks. The office of the Ventura County Treasurer and Tax Collector reported an outbreak (Jan. 8) and both Trader Joe’s locations (Mills Road and Victoria Avenue; both on Jan. 13) in Ventura reported outbreaks.

Other reported outbreaks include WinCo Foods (Jan. 8), Lowe’s (East Main Street, Ventura, Jan. 13), Mission Produce (East Vineyard Avenue in Oxnard, Jan. 12).

“These times are terrible” Hope, friends and prayer help a family manage a COVID-induced stroke

ee Muth is upbeat and hopeful in sharing her and her husband’s harrowing story with COVID-19 that continues to unfold. They live in Meiners Oaks, with some horses and chickens. She works with the United States Postal Service (USPS) and Jeff is a fourth generation Ventura County oil field worker.

She connected with the Ventura County Reporter on Monday, Jan. 11, after taking Jeff out for a walk. Today, Jeff requires her help due to the effects of a COVID-related stroke.

They’ve been able to manage because of help from their friends and church community and Lee is hopeful that he’ll fully recover.

COVID, not a cold

On Nov. 30, 2020, Lee felt the onset of basic cold symptoms.

“I was sick with a chest cold on a Monday, I called my doctor on Tuesday,” she said. Lee had to get a note from her doctor to verify she was ill for her job at the USPS. “You don’t just call in sick, you need a note.” Her doctor wrote a note for her to stay home from work for the next week and she got tested that day. “I got a phone call on Friday . . . on Dec. 4, I found out I was positive.” Her doctor said she should let her husband know and he should also stay home from work. Jeff came home and got tested. It was positive.

They quarantined, and Lee began to feel better after two weeks with only a mild cough.

Jeff got tested again 14 days later, and was still positive. Jeff is just 60 years old and Lee said he has no underlying health conditions. He had some chest pains in November and had a full cardiovascular work up, but the doctors said all was well.

About the second positive test, “According to two doctors that’s not terribly uncommon, sometimes it stays in your system,” Lee explained. The doctors told her they wouldn’t be able to retest her for two months, “maybe even 60 to 90 days, before a retest.”

After the two-week quarantine and second positive test, Lee said that Jeff started to get sicker. “He got bronchitis in his lungs . . . I rushed him to the ER on a Monday.”

He went to the emergency room at Ojai Valley Hospital, where doctors found scarring and inflammation in his lungs and prescribed azithromycin, dexamethasone and Virtussin, a cough syrup.

“It was frustrating, sitting in a parking lot, scared for your husband.”

— Lee Muth Back at home he was feeling dizzy now and then, “numbness and tingling on his right side.” Lee said everything Jeff was feeling was a stated side effect of the medication. As the tingling continued, his doctor said it was alright to stop the medications, that they’d “figure something else out.”

COVID-19 leads to stroke

Things took a turn for the worse that same night, when Jeff had a stroke.

According to Lee, as he was sitting on the couch, “his words started slurring, then he couldn’t move his right leg…I rushed him to the ER. He had a stroke more than likely from having COVID . . . it was a clot in his brain.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, COVID-19 can make blood cells more likely to clump up and form clots, which can lead to a stroke. At Ojai Valley Hospital, Jeff received tissue plasminogen activator treatment (tPA) — an intravenous injection of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator or alteplase. The treatment is designed to restore blood flow quickly by dissolving the clot causing the stroke.

Jeff stayed in the hospital for about four hours “on standby waiting to be cleared to be moved.” She said doctors told her one risk of the treatment is that someone may “bleed out if something happens,” such as a patient being moved too soon after treatment. Later, he was transported by ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura and was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit.

“The whole time, I was not permitted to go in,” Lee said. “It was frustrating, sitting in a parking lot, scared for your husband.”

Jeff spent four days in the ICU, then was moved into a COVID-19 isolation room. In total 8—

Lee and Jeff Muth of Meiners Oaks. Photo submitted. he spent a week in the hospital. Lee said that everywhere Jeff was, he was “taken good care of,” and fully acknowledged the trying time hospital staff are experiencing. But the experience was difficult for both of them.

“That’s hard, having someone that is that ill and out of it, stuck in their own room,” said Lee. “He couldn’t answer his phone, he couldn’t remember the passcode,” and he couldn’t reach the hospital phone when Lee would call. “It was horrible, it was so hard. With COVID going on you can’t go in and sit with them, so they are alone...they need people to be there, to know someone is thinking about you,” wanting you to “hurry up and get well. Only four times a day someone would step in and that was it, take care of him and then leave. Horrible.

These times are terrible, this COVID.” The next morning Lee got a call that Jeff was not able to swallow or talk or move on the right side. Doctors told her his “brain did not know the right side existed, you need to be prepared, people don’t always come out of this.”

She reached out to her church. “Our prayer group, people that know and that love him.

Prayers work . . . two days later he’s able to eat breakfast, move his arm and a little bit of his leg. The doctors don’t believe how much he’s progressed. God is good.”

COVID complicates recovery

From the hospital Jeff was moved to Victoria Care Center, a skilled nursing facility.

“They are extremely wonderful people,” said Lee. Jeff was supposed to be there for 30 days, and receive extensive physical therapy. “When he got there, a majority of their staff got COVID and were under quarantine . . . So there was no one to help him to do physical therapy.”

At one point Jeff’s doctor was updated on the situation at the facility and, when reviewing Jeff’s chart, realized that beyond basic care, Jeff had essentially laid in bed for seven days. Lee doesn’t fault the care center at all; she saw them doing the best they could with an incredibly limited staff.

“I was amazed by them,” Lee said about the staff at Victoria Care Center. “They are in a tough situation with more than half [their staff] under quarantine, it’s a totally unprecedented circumstance.” She said they were as attentive as they could be, and kept her informed, emailing every morning “to give me a count” about the COVID levels among staff. “They were so up-front,” reporting “four more staff out today, under quarantine. That is pretty cool, they could have easily not said anything.”

But with the inability to provide physical therapy, Lee said “there is no way he could have stayed there.”

Considering the limits of care at Victoria, and at the doctors’ suggestion, Lee decided to move Jeff home. The care providers said they could send someone to their house to do physical therapy, while Lee could be with Jeff and care for him. That sounded ideal.

The reality, however, was much different.

“I have since found out that no one is willing to come to our house to do physical therapy,” Lee said. “He’s been tested three times and all three times tested positive for COVID. The doctors say he may not be contagious, but it is a big red flag.”

Despite this, under Lee’s care, Jeff is making good progress.

“His short-term memory is gone, he has incredible numbness and tingling, but he’s

“So we are doing it on our own. It’s been going OK. I’m not good at it. I’m trying, and he deserves it. I don’t want this to keep him from becoming himself again, he shouldn’t be denied that from any of this.”

While Lee said that now, more than a month after having COVID-19, she feels fine, she noted, “It’s weird though, my sense of smell is barely coming back. He doesn’t have smell or taste quite yet.”

The Holocaust Remembrance concert, he says, will celebrate “an incredible chapter of music history where you can see an array of cultural influences — classical, folk, contemporary — mixing together.

There were literally hundreds of Jewish composers and artists flourishing in the early 20th century who were captured, exiled and struck down by the Nazi regime.

So this concert is a way to honor that period, especially in Southern California where our music history is replete with contributions from these composers. It’s the story of the music we know as well as great discoveries of works from a very special time.”

Ahead of the concert, NWS will present “complementary content” including interviews with the Violins of Hope Los Angeles Chair Susanne Reyto and a local Holocaust survivor (Jan. 27, 7 p.m.), a pre-concert talk with musicologist David Ravetch (Jan. 28, 6 p.m.) and an interview with Jerusalem Quartet members (Jan. 30, 7 p.m.).

“It’s a special combination of our musicians and guests, working within the parameters we have,” says Christie. “This concert, even in the hardest of health circumstances, has come together well.”

Laddy Issues

I’m a woman in my early 20s. My friends say I have “daddy issues,” because I tend to date men in their 30s.

(I do have a decent relationship with my dad.) I find men in their 20s generally immature, slobby, and inconsiderate, with limited communication skills (and no desire to improve them).

I can’t see how being frustrated with that means there’s something wrong with me, but I hear “daddy issues” so much I’m starting to wonder.

times eat their young — long before their gupp-ettes start spending their days smoking weed, playing Mortal Kombat 11, and waiting for the trash to grow legs, waddle out back, and throw itself in the dumpster.

Your friends join countless people with zero background in the therapy game who are quick to “diagnose” others with various insulting psychological issues. Luckily, few have the medical hubris to give your forehead a squint across the hors d’oeuvres and announce, “Excuse me, but I think you have a small tumor named Max pressing on your frontal lobe.”

Clinical psychologist Darren Fowler and his student, Sara Skentelbery, investigated the rather common belief that a woman who dates older men (by 10 or more years) has “daddy issues”: an unhealthy relationship with her father. Comparing elder-dating women with women dating more age-matched men, they found no support for the notion that they were using these men as psychological grout, a la, “I love how you fill the void from my pops never coming to my violin recitals.”

Evolutionary psychology research on female mate preferences suggests you might not be drawn to older men,

per se, but men who are more mature, more willing to commit, and more able to support any children you might have together. In a few years, as guys closer to your age meet these benchmarks better, you might start dating men just slightly older (as research finds women tend to do).

This only changes when women hit their 70s, when many become willing to give (somewhat younger) young bucks a shot. At this point, their friends in assisted living probably tell them they have “cradle issues,” but probably just because they’re jealous from eavesdropping on them through the walls: “Shout dirty to me, Chad!”

Tender Mercenaries

I’m a 30-year-old woman. My ex is an extremely wealthy and successful Wall Streeter I found to be a charming sociopath: lying, manipulative, and willing to do anything to win. I was curious about the woman he was with before me, so I Googled her.

Like him, she’s in her 40s and very good-looking. She’s really accomplished: an Ivy grad and founder and CEO of a successful company. I was surprised to see she’s dating a guy who’s a construction manager. With all she has going for her, why would

she move from my ex to this man?

It’s not surprising that you and this other woman were drawn to Darth Trader. Research finds that women (from the Amazon to the, uh, Amazon.com) are driven to try to land high-status, high-earning men. But evolutionary psychologist Norman Li observed that, in some studies, this priority sometimes ranked surprisingly low on research participants’ wish lists. Li attributed this to how a good deal of mating research gave participants “sky’s the limit” options that don’t reflect the real-world constraints on people’s choices; for example, the “trade-offs normally made when people select mates, whose traits come in bundles.” (“Good earner” is packaged with “looks vaguely Neanderthal.”)

Context also matters, like whether a person’s own mate value, on a scale from 1 to 10, is “Little Engine That Could”-ing its way to 6.

Research by sociologist Yue

Qian, among others, does find that high-earning, highly educated women tend to go for (SET ITAL)higher-earning, more highly educated(END ITAL) men. However, it’s possible that, for this woman, feeling burned by a “great on paper” guy who treats others as vending machines for his needs provided powerful “context,” motivating her subsequent choice of boyfriend. I see that women in their 30s and 40s who previously snubbed men who weren’t power brokers often start putting more weight on finding a loving man with good character. For this particular woman, a manly-man urban cowboy on a bucking earth mover might be just the change she needs — even temporarily — from a selfish, sociopathic Wall Street pretty boy. Ideally, if a woman describes the man she’s with as “amazing,” it shouldn’t be because he’s living proof that a human being can survive for decades without a heart.
