A

merica has been the moral compass for the world more or less since the end of World War II. Rarely has there been a world issue, conspiracy or revolution we haven’t had our hand in. We’ve been on the right side of history and the wrong side as well.

For every Vietnam War, we’ve also provided aid to Third World countries. The world has seen us as the leader and, for the most part, we’ve tried to hold ourselves up to a higher standard.

This of course makes the current tensions between America and Iran so frustrating. While President Donald Trump has attempted to show strength by force, he has only done this at the expense of human lives. Even though America must be strong, in the end, we must also be that light on a hill that President Ronald Reagan proclaimed us as 30 years ago.

One political pundit, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, called out Trump to remember that we don’t need or want a war. After the striking down of Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani, Carlson said these sobering words: “It’s hard to remember now, but as recently as last week, most people didn’t consider Iran an imminent threat. Iranian saboteurs were not committing acts of terror in our cities. Oh,

but our leaders tell us they were about to any second and that’s why we struck first.”

“What’s so striking is how many people appear to accept this uncritically,” Carlson continued. “Just the other day, you’ll remember, our intel agencies were considered politically tainted and suspect. Certainly, on this show, they are — were — and will be for quite some time.”

Carlson’s break from cheerleading the president is a refreshing one. One that demonstrates integrity from the right, as the president battles impeachment. While right wing hacks like Sean Hannity praise the president over every thing he tweets and says, to get a powerful voice to articulate the reservations moderates and conservatives have does help ease the frustrations for the voiceless that may have voted for him because he promised not to start wars.

President Trump was supposed to be the anti-war president, not the strike-first Commander in Chief. While we have come to see the GOP as the party of war, Trump was supposed to be different. At least in this area of diplomacy and war doctrine. But maybe the reason he felt free to move forward with the drone strike was because he knew Iran would historically back down.

“If past is prologue, we have learned that when we enforce a red line with Iran, when Iran gets rapped on the knuckles, they tactically

retreat,” Dan Hoffman, a former C.I.A. officer who served in Iraq, told the New York Times.

“The retreat might be ephemeral before Iran probes its enemies with more gradually escalating attacks, but we’ve seen it repeatedly.”

Yet, any student of history also knows that America has a long history of messing up any war started in the Middle East. Even if the road to “victory” looks quick, the pathway to exiting is much more complex and messy.

This is why we cannot allow these types of tension-filled weeks to happen. This entire exercise feels like a Bay of Pigs waiting to happen.

A Cuban Missile Crisis in waiting. The world is watching, Mr. President. America cannot afford to look weak or like a bully — especially as you get investigated.

President Trump used to mock Jeb Bush for the sins of his brother. Now, with Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren breaking away from the pack soon, he won’t have a Bush to pick on. Instead, ironically, he is now the Bush.

In times such as these, as the world watches, we must look for our better nature if we still want to be the beacon of light as we start a new decade. Because if we prove to be the hypocrites on the hill instead, the next world leader might not be from a nation built on democracy and freedom, and that could lead to a future no one will want to be a part of. ♦

Bernie opens presidential campaign office in Oxnard

n Friday, Jan. 10, a few hundred people milled in and out of a modest storefront office at 545 S. Oxnard Blvd. They came from across Ventura County to celebrate the opening of the local headquarters for the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign.

“There is so much history in Oxnard fighting for rights . . . there has been a lot of struggle here,” said Rafael Navar, California director for the Sanders campaign, speaking to the crowd. “We are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history . . . really this crisis is affording us the biggest opportunity to build the country of the promise that it never was for a lot of people.”

The Sanders office is the only presidential campaign office in Oxnard. On the busy boulevard, a few police officers made sure all was well, and the rotating Bernie head atop the BernieVan in the nearby parking lot seemed to smile upon the crowd. The event focused on getting volunteers to canvass and help the campaign in their community. Local band Mariachi Inklakesh, led by Javier Gomez, performed.

“The green new deal should have been a conservative deal from the get go,” said Dan Schmidt of Ventura. He was waiting in line at the Sanders office in a blue t-shirt that read “Republicans for Bernie.” He said he supports Sanders because, “the republicans are leading us down to the biggest tax deficit . . . and climate change is number one [problem].”

Rebecca Sanders (no relation to Bernie), originally from Vermont, now lives in Port Hueneme. Her husband works at the base. She also served in the military and supports Sand-

ers because “he gives me hope. For years I’ve seen what other countries have done. How they take care of their people, how they have healthcare, pay for education . . . those countries end up being the happiest countries . . . they ask how we are going to pay for it, but no one asks how we are going to pay for the war with Iran.”

The line outside moved along and everyone got inside for the speakers and to sign up with the campaign. “It was beyond what we could have imagined as far as turnout, community support, the energy,” said Tomas Rebecchi, the Central Coast and Central Valley field director for the Sanders campaign. He said about 350 people attended the event, and that the campaign already has hundreds of volunteers working in the county since the summer. He said in the week after the office opening, “We’ve had one of the best weeks yet of canvassing for the city and our region, because we have this field office, with great volunteers, energy and support from the Oxnard community.”

Rebecchi said it’s important for a national campaign to have a local field office in Oxnard because it’s traditionally “been a community that has been overlooked, taken advantage of by politicians and corporations. It has also had a lot of successes.

It’s important we are in the communities that are struggling the most, helping lift them up, and to create organizers and leaders for other fights and other elections down the road.”

Vote by mail ballots go out in Ventura County on Feb. 3 for the March 3 primary and the Sanders campaign will be canvassing every weekend, doing call banks and voter registration. “We will be building up our army of volunteers to get out the vote on March 3.”

Oxnard homeless shelter plans dropped

xnard city officials have dropped plans for a homeless shelter near Five Points that drew heavy opposition from neighborhood residents and business operators.

City Manager Alex Nguyen told the city council at a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 7, that rushing to sign a lease for the building at 1258 Saviers Road would give the city only a temporary solution to homelessness.

“I’ve given staff direction to terminate that effort and pursue another location where we can have a more comprehensive set of solutions,” Nguyen said, outlining a more long-term strategy, including a centralized spot that would offer both a shelter and health and social services.

“So in the end that outcome would be much more of a complete solution than what we were pursuing at Saviers,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen said that this strategy would ultimately include “Housing First,” a relatively new way of dealing with homelessness that moves people directly from the street or shelters to their own apartments.

“Because as I’ve said all along, a shelter alone does not solve homelessness,” Nguyen said.

The change in plans comes after several people opposed to putting a shelter in the former Salvation Army Thrift Store building gave Housing Director Emilio Ramirez an earful at a Dec. 18 community meeting. Business owners described break-ins and drug use by homeless people already frequenting the neighborhood, questioning the wisdom of putting a shelter across from two liquor stores.

During public comments at Tuesday’s council meeting Jack Villa, who attended the community meeting in South Oxnard, summed up the concerns of residents.

“When the council decides where that shelter will be, I really hope that you keep in mind the residents, the businesses, the traffic, the pedestrians,” Villa said.

Villa added that he hoped the location would have room for expansion because he suspects the number of homeless is going to double in four or five years.

City Councilmember Bryan MacDonald and Commission on Homelessness Chair Peggy Rivera both said one location being considered is Second and B streets in downtown Oxnard near the library.

Rivera and MacDonald suggested that the vacant building now at 241 W. Second St. could be razed and a new building like the one Nguyen described be built in ♦ its place.

Oxnard oil field waste site closed

Anterra disposal wells shut after violations

A

ccording to a letter dated Dec. 17, 2019, posted on the website for Anterra Energy Services, LLC, the facility on Wooley Road in Oxnard is temporarily closed and is not receiving any fluid for disposal.

Anterra is a commercial Class II wastewater disposal site and operates two injection wells in the Oxnard Plain.

The company normally accepts oil field waste that is deemed non-hazardous. State law classifies all oil field waste that was “downhole,” or inside an oil well, as nonhazardous. The company has previously been subject to a district attorney investigation, and later paid a $500,000 fine. Company leadership has changed several times.

Last year the company’s injection wells failed pressure tests and the state issued violations.

Anterra representatives did not respond to requests for comment. Most of the company’s website has been taken down. Only the letter, signed by owner Frank Staben, stating the company has a goal to “reactivate operations mid-2020” is online.

A spokesperson with the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM), the state’s regulatory office for oil and gas operations, said that the state “did

not require Anterra to stop injection,” but “required [Anterra] to perform a pressure fall off test (PFO).” The test, CalGEM explained, was intended to confirm that the pressure in the reservoir, where waste is disposed of underground, was within required limits. “The test requires a temporary halt to injection so tubing pressures can be recorded to reflect reservoir conditions.

The operator cannot resume injection until the well pressure falls to zero PSI. At this point, the pressure has not reached zero and [Anterra] has continued to have the well shut.” CalGEM will be discussing “next steps with Anterra in the near future.”

Anterra is one of two commercial sites in Ventura County that is allowed to dispose of oil field waste; the other was Santa Clara Waste Water (SCWW) in Santa Paula, which is also closed following the 2014 explosion that permanently disabled employees and first responders. A new company has applied to reopen the SCWW site.

Anterra also has a pending permit renewal with the Ventura County Planning Department that will be heard by the Ventura County Planning Commission.

Dave Ward, director of the planning department, said his office is trying to get a hearing set in February.

“We are completing our analysis and finishing up the staff report.”

Camarillo bans industrial hemp On Jan. 8, the Camarillo City Council voted 3-2 to adopt an ordinance prohibiting industrial hemp cultivation within city limits.

Vice Mayor Susan Santangelo and Councilmember Shawn Mulchay opposed the ordinance.

Members of the public spoke and wrote to councilmembers complaining about the impacts of the smell, describing symptoms consistent with allergic reactions including breathing problems and scratchy throats. Others in support of allowing industrial hemp to be grown cited the benefits of the plant, which can be used for clothing, fibers, fuel and more. The term “industrial hemp” is used to describe hemp intended for commercial non-intoxicant uses.

Several city council members cited the need for the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, which oversees the unincorporated areas where most industrial hemp is grown, to address the issue of odors from the plant.

New waterfront apartments for lease at Ventura Harbor Developers of the newly built Portside Ventura Harbor have announced leasing has opened for the first 56 apartments in the mixed-use project. The entire project includes 270 living units, 30 mixed-use or live/work units and 22,000 sq. ft. of retail space on 27 acres. The project includes a new marina with 104 boat slips and a public dock.

Ten percent of the units are designated for low and moderate income earners. Examples of available units include a 580-ft. studio leasing for $2205 per month, and a two-bedroom, 1283-sq.ft. “townhome” leasing for $3695 per month.

Man charged with embezzling from state beach Kevin Jacobs Enns of Ventura has been charged with two felony counts of embezzlement of public funds, which the Ventura County District Attorney states occurred while he was working as the entry gate attendant at San Buenaventura State Beach. $2,690 was stolen between June and July 2019. Enns faces up to four years, eight months in prison if convicted.

Moorpark man dies on Christmas Day On Christmas Day, deputies with

the Moorpark Police Department responded to reports of a deceased man on the 100 block of Second St., in Moorpark. Officers found a body, which was identified as Garrett Wayne, 57, of Moorpark.

No major injuries were found and an investigation showed that Wayne had been at a holiday party at a nearby residence the evening before and had become heavily intoxicated. Neighbors were unsuccessful in getting him out of the yard, where he fell asleep.

Members of the public had made claims on social media initially that Wayne had been a victim of a crime, but those claims were later recanted. Wayne’s final cause of death is pending a toxicology report.

County General Plan has significant enviro impacts The public review and comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Ventura County 2040 General Plan Update started on Jan. 13 and continues through Feb. 27. This window is when the public can provide input and feedback on the contents of the EIR, which applies to the goals, policies and programs proposed in the Draft General Plan, which will govern all land use in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The Ventura County Planning Department has stated the EIR “has identified significant and unavoidable environmental impacts” on various “resource areas” including: agriculture, air quality, cultural, greenhouse gas emissions, mineral and petroleum resources, transportation and utilities.

Watershed moment

Petrochem sold as a water war looms in the Ventura River Watershed

T

he Ventura River Watershed is a vast area stretching from the Ventura River mouth to the Upper Ojai Valley and back to the edges of the Sespe, with an arm reaching into Santa Barbara County. It encompasses all the land that gathers water from local mountain peaks, channeling it down into barrancas and drainages, combining into creek beds and eventually all coming together into the Ventura River to stream out to the Pacific Ocean.

It includes not just water visible at the surface, but also the deep groundwater basins that fill water wells for thousands of property owners in the area.

Our watershed supports habitat for millions of living organisms — plants, animals, insects, fungi and microbes. From hillside chaparral to oak woodland groves to the riparian areas, the Ventura River Watershed is a vast ecosystem connected by the water that flows through it.

Two stories are currently unfolding in the Ventura River Watershed, one regarding a pol-

luted property that is changing hands, the other involving a legal case that could have ramifications for all water users and water rights for decades.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR PETROCHEM SITE? Those who drive the highway 33 corridor regularly may have noticed something different. The spheres are gone. Two large, round tanks used by Shell Oil Company in the 1950s to store ammonia, that have been empty and mothballed for years and were slated for demolition for decades, are no more. They were finally dismantled mere days after escrow closed on the sale of the property at 4777 Crooked Palm Road in Ventura.

Dwight Stenseth, president of Indianapolisbased Real Estate Recovery Capital (RER), confirmed that Palm Road LLC, the company listed on the deed, is owned by RER. He described RER as a “brownfield redeveloper . . . we buy environmentally contaminated [sites]. We go in, remove the contamination and work with the state to get the signoffs for a clean property. In most cases we sell to someone who wants to develop it down the road.”

Petrochem, the owner up until Dec. 26, 2019, applied to the Ventura County Planning Department to modify the permit for the property and make it a vehicle storage yard. Stenseth said RER is “trying to get our arms around everything,” and that they “haven’t decided yet” whether or not to proceed with the proposed project. He said that frequently, RER steps “into a project with a negative history and background. We like to think we can do some good things.”

VEHICLE STORAGE PLAN IN QUESTION In Sept. 2019, the Ventura County Planning Director approved Petrochem’s plans to turn the property into a vehicle storage yard for new cars, naming the Port of Hueneme as the main source. But the port stated that the car companies it works with were not interested in that site because it was too far from the port.

A group of local organizations filed an appeal of that decision, citing numerous problems with the plan. The appellants call themselves the Petrochem Appeal Alliance and include: Climate First: Replacing Oil and Gas (CFROG), Environmental Coalition, Food and Water Action, Ven-

tura Citizens for Hillside Preservation, Friends of the Ventura River, Ventura Land Trust, Wishtoyo Chumash Foundation, California Trout, Inc., Sierra Club Los Padres Chapter, Westside Community Council, Showing Up for Racial Justice, Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura and Central Coast Alliance for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE).

The appeal argues that the project shouldn’t be approved because of air quality impacts and a failure of Petrochem to include a true and complete project description, something the alliance says local zoning ordinances require.

“Zoning clearance application instructions require that a full, true and correct account of the proposed project must be provided,” said Marie Lakin, communications director with CFROG, responding by email to the VCReporter.

Initially the project named the Port of Hueneme as one of the entities that would use the site to store new vehicles. “The applicant pulled the port out of the picture the very day of the [planning director] hearing because [the port] objected to being named in the project on the grounds that they had surveyed all their auto clients and not one wanted to park cars on this remote and controversial site. The project application for vehicle storage is still active and pending, even though RER is now the owner of the site.

Dave Ward, director of the Ventura County Planning Department, said “The new owners must sign for application and acknowledge the conditions of approval before we move forward; or they could decide to amend the permit or withdraw if the new owners seek something different. We are awaiting their direction.”

WATERSHED PROPERTY OWNERS INCLUDED IN LEGAL ACTION

HISTORY OF WATER USE CONCERNS In 2014, the environmental organization Santa Barbara Channelkeeper (SBCK) sued the California State Water Board and the city of Ventura “because [the city] takes by far, more water than any other individual user and has the pumping capacity at Foster Park to pump the river dry, even if everyone else left water behind,” said Ben Pitterle, science and policy director with SBCK. According to the SBCK website, the legal action’s aim is to ensure there is adequate water in the river for wildlife such as the endangered steelhead trout, and to preserve “finite water supplies for all users.”

Ventura and SBCK entered into an interim settlement in Sept. 2019, in which the city agreed to participate in a pilot program to maintain adequate flow and reduce the city’s impacts on wildlife.

Then, the Ventura City Council approved a plan from their attorneys to build a sustainable water plan in the watershed through a process called adjudication.

Benjamin said, “In this context ‘adjudication’ means a legal action to comprehensively determine all water rights within the Ventura River Watershed, including the waters of the Ventura River and the groundwater basins located within the watershed.” The process will also, if the city has its way, “impose a courtordered ‘physical solution’ that protects and conserves this limited water supply.”

Pitterle said SBCK “initially fought against the cross-complaints in court because we felt it would delay actions needed on the city’s [water] well field, but we were overturned in

MANAGEMENT PLANS UNDER CONSIDERATION Some point to the California Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) that is already identifying those groundwater basins that are overused, and requiring local agencies to come up with a sustainability plan by 2022 or risk the state taking over.

Two of the four basins currently at issue — the Upper Ventura River and Ojai Valley (lower valley) — in the watershed fall under the directives of the SGMA. But Ventura’s plan includes all four of the basins — the former as well as Lower Ventura River and Upper Ojai basins.

“The [SGMA] only requires that, starting in January of 2022, the designated Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) prepare Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs) for two of the four basins covered by this action,” explained Benjamin, noting that the city’s “action is a more comprehensive, system-wide attempt to address all of the fishery issues facing the watershed, including all four basins, the river and its tributaries now. The physical solution the city is pursuing will be consistent with and will help implement the GSPs once they are developed.”

On Sunday, Jan. 12, at the meeting of the Democratic Club of Ventura, Matt LaVere, mayor of Ventura, said he was told by attorneys that this adjudication process involving all watershed property owners was the only way to get all water users to the table. “I rely a lot on what our attorneys tell us . . . if there is another [way] I would jump at it.”

Haney said LaVere “needs more education and a better grasp of the facts on these water issues,” and that Ojai will be seeking a public discussion with its attorney about next steps.

RESPONSE FROM OJAI “I wanted to meet you all face to face to get a look at the people who decided to sue every property owner in the Ojai Valley, en masse,” said Laura Rearwin Ward, publisher of the Ojai Valley News, also speaking at the Jan. 13 meeting. She said this action would divide the two communities and could bankrupt many, noting LaVere had told her he “hadn’t read the lawsuit.” Directing a statement to LaVere, she said, “If you agree with going forward with this lawsuit, you need to withdraw your bid for county supervisor immediately. You cannot represent the people of the Ojai Valley when you are suing us.”

“I wanted to clarify, I hadn’t read the part of the complaint . . . that called for [the city]…seeking our legal fees, the city’s legal fees,” responded LaVere. “I missed that part in the complaint.”

“I’m profoundly disappointed” with what Ventura has done, said Ojai city councilmember William Weirick, calling the action to sue the “entire Ojai Valley uninformed.” But he said he was “encouraged” by LaVere’s statement about wanting to work together to find a solution.

“We’ll see what happens.”

Last week 10,500 property owners across the Ventura River Watershed began receiving a thick envelope via certified mail from the city of Ventura. A majority of those who received it are in the Ojai Valley.

The document inside, dated Jan. 6, 2020, is titled “Notice of commencement of groundwater basin adjudication.” The next page states, “This notice is important. Any rights you claim to pump or store groundwater from the basins identified in this notice may be affected by a lawsuit initiated by the third amended cross complaint summarized below.” That cross complaint is from the city of Ventura, and includes language that the city would seek attorneys’ fees from the property owners.

The notice states, “Failing to participate in this lawsuit could have a significant adverse effect on any right to pump or store groundwater that you may have.” The document goes on to state that a judgment in the case could prevent “any person now or in the future, who owns your land from ever pumping, extracting or storing groundwater from, under or on your land.”

The notice includes information about a June 1, 2020, case management conference that some folks thought they were being summoned to.

Across social media — Facebook and Next Door primarily — residents began asking if they were being sued, why they were being summoned and what to do.

“Technically [it is] not a summons, just a notice of adjudication,” said Dakotah Benjamin, an attorney with Best, Best and Krieger, representing the city. He said those who received the notice are “not being sued,” and “are not parties to adjudication . . . to be a party they would need to file an answer.”

He said no one has to respond and the “vast majority” of people would not be impacted, but then said, the “final outcome could impact someone’s water rights,” and that folks should respond if they “want to assure they have water rights in the future.” Benjamin added, “It is the

H Gallery welcomes new curator Contemporary art space to host networking event

Gallery + Studios is getting into a new groove for 2020.

Following the departure of Yessica Torres, who opened a new gallery space in Downtown Los Angeles, the Midtown Ventura creative space (which, despite an error published in “Arts Briefs” in the Jan. 2 issue, has not closed) has a new curator in Ute Culemann-Ritke. She will debut her first show in February.

Currently on the walls in the contemporary art gallery are works by resident artists who occupy the building’s 20 studio spaces. At the moment, gallery viewings are by appointment only, but the public will have a chance to see the exhibit and meet Culemann-Ritke — as well as H Gallery’s artists, musicians, photographers and other creative types — during The Art of Networking, a mixer for artists and other business professionals, on Jan. 22.

Coming up on March 1, cellist Zlatomir Fung, the winner of the 2019 International Tchaikovsky Competition, will perform an all-Brahms program. On May 3, clarinetist Narek Arutyunian will perform, followed in October by a concert by accordianist Hanzhi Wang. Rounding out the season in December 2020 will be a performance by flutist Jill Felber and pianist Dianne Frazer.

The roster of Chamber on the Mountain performers is impressive.

“Most of them come from New York City,” Lehwalder says. She adds that some of them feel a little lost when they first get to the Logan House, where many of them stay while they’re in town. She notes that they often arrive late at night and their initial response is, “Where the heck am I?” But the next morning, they wake up and look outside. Then, Lehwalder says, their reaction is, “‘Oh, my God.’ And they don’t want to leave.”

sesame flavors. So which one was my favorite? They were all delicious, but hands down were the honey sesame and jalapeño. It’s a sweet ‘n’ savory thing for me.

Up next was the Eggs Benedict Molise ($15). There are five different versions of eggs Benedict, and my Molise was filled with small but hearty bites of prosciutto parma, diced pancetta and poached eggs topped with parsley and a light homemade hollandaise sauce. This was perfection: not too salty and just the right amount of sauce. There was also a side of fruit and potatoes.

The fruit was super fresh (my friend remarked that the strawberries were sweet and tasted amazing for it being winter) and beautifully presented, and the potatoes had the perfect amount of crunch and seasoning.

We were in for a treat with the San Francisco Sourdough French Toast ($10). I’ve never had French Toast with sourdough bread and I was hooked at first bite. The maple syrup had hints of vanilla and the bread slices soaked it right up.

The Homemade Breakfast Lasagna ($15) was a first for me, with spinach and prosciutto cotto in a béchamel marinara sauce, all topped with a fried egg. That sweet marinara sauce is what really made this dish extra special.

Finally, Maicho’s Morning Carbonara ($14) with rigatoni, egg, pecorino romano and parmesan cheese. You can even substitute the rigatoni for gluten-free penne.

This was the perfect blend of cheese and it wasn’t too heavy on the Alfredo sauce.

Hours are currently 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. A variety of other breakfast plates, omelettes, sandwiches, hot dishes, salads, juices, beer and wine are also served. Business partner Matt Coulter said that they hope to introduce a dinner menu in the second or third quarter of the year.

Something extra special I was handed on my way out was Tromba’s grandmother’s homemade pizzelle, a waffle cookie pressed in an iron. I felt that I was adopted into the Tromba family by the time I left. Benvenuti! ♦

I’ve bought plenty of household supplies in the two years we’ve lived together without ever asking for any money. It feels weird and cheap that he’s suddenly doing this. Am I being unreasonable in feeling this way, or is he being seriously petty?

Weird conflicts like this make you start seeing your roommate differently, and not in a good way — kind of like Joan of Arc on horseback, brandishing an empty bottle of Lysol.

by amy alkon As for what might’ve gotten your roommate so testy about the division of expenses, the human mind seems to have a built-in bookkeeping department. This is the force at work when an irate 8-year-old announces — “J’Accuse!” — that her sister’s slice of cake is a full three-hundredths of a millimeter bigger than hers. We seem to expect 50-50 splits (which we perceive as “fair”) and get unhinged when another person gets a bigger share.

Our emotions are an essential part of our mind’s accounting staff, driving us to take action to correct imbalances. Neuroscientist Matthew Lieberman has found that fairness seems to read as emotionally “rewarding” to us — that is, feelgood. Unfairness, on the other hand, leads to “aversive” emotions (the feelbad kind), motivating us to even out the balance of things so we can feel better.

The sort of scorekeeping your roommate’s engaging in seems to be triggered when people perceive they’ve been treated unfairly. Their perception may be wrong — and that may actually be beneficial for them. Though we tend to assume we evolved to perceive things accurately, research by evolutionary psychologists Martie Haselton and David Buss suggests that we make self-protective errors in perception — sometimes seeing things as greater than or less than they actually are. It seems we

evolved to err in whichever direction would be least costly to us in terms of our ability to survive and mate.

In harsh ancestral times, for example, letting somebody take advantage of us, like by freeloading, would likely have posed a greater threat to our survival than perceiving (perhaps incorrectly) that they weren’t pulling their weight. Putting them on notice that we wouldn’t just roll over for their slackerhood showed them (and others) that we’d stand up

are close to equal.) What’s important is that it makes the spending transparent and, ultimately, transparently 50-50. Because people cling to injustice (or perceived injustice), this, compassionately, allows him to have something a little more commemorative on his tombstone than “Shared living quarters with a leech. You could suggest using an app like Splitwise to tally up what you each spend on household supplies and then reimburse each other. (This might even show him that you are spending more or that things

You say it yourself: “We’re bad for each other.” Staying together on these terms is like being lactose intolerant and going on a fondue cleanse.

Unfortunately, understanding this probably doesn’t make amputating your partner any less devastating.

But research by psychologist Lauren C. Howe suggests your perspective on the breakup matters: whether you see the breakup as an indictment or an opportunity.

Howe finds that emotional recov-

ery after a breakup comes out of treating it “as a learning experience ... embracing rejections as opportunities for growth.” Contrast this thinking — seeing a breakup as opportunity for self-improvement — with seeing a breakup as “selfdefining,” a sort of confirmation of some ugly “core truth” about oneself. Howe explains that this belief can cause the breakup to have a lingering impact, making people fear rejection and even “feel haunted by their past.”

In other words, using your breakup as a conduit to the sort of relationship you want should dial down its negative effects. Focus on what you’ve learned and figure out what you need to do differently, like, say, quickly identifying and weeding out men who can’t give you the openness and affection you’re looking for.

This, in turn, should help you land a man whose emotional expressiveness suggests his location on the Great Chain of Being is not directly above pictures of a cinder block and moss. Another unique aspect of Spencer’s art was its mix of eroticism and religiosity. I think you’ll enjoy exploring that blend yourself in the coming months. Your spiritual and sexual longings could be quite synergistic. There’s one part of Spencer’s quirky nature I don’t recommend you imitate, however. He often wore pajamas beneath his clothes, even to formal occasions.

In communications with Mr. Mutschler and with counsel for Voyager International, it became clear that Voyager International would contest any claim that the Decedent’s estate might have to recover any goods in which the estate might claim an interest or to recover the value of any inventory

that had already been sold. In fact, Voyager International suggested that the estate potentially would owe Voyager International a sum of money equal to or in excess of the value of the inventory based on the theory that the estate is responsible for the contractual obligations of the Decedent to Voyager International.

Based on the investigation and these communications, the Special Administrator concluded that pursuing claims in litigation to recover any goods and/or the value of any goods already sold would be extremely costly, that the outcome of any such litigation would be uncertain and that the cost of the litigation likely would be more than the value of any recovery. The Special Administrator’s primary objectives were to ensure that Voyager International would not assert claims in the probate proceedings, and, if such claims were asserted, that they would be defeated. The goal was to protect any probate and non-probate assets of the Decedent from claims

by Voyager International.

Under Probate Code Section 9100, the deadline for Voyager International or any other alleged creditor of the estate to make a claim expired on July 27, 2019. By that time, Voyager International had not filed a claim in the probate proceedings. As a result, Voyager International has voluntarily waived its right to pursue any claims relating to the Decedent’s estate.

Under these circumstances, the Special Administrator has determined that it is in the best interest of the estate to abandon any claims relating to Voyager International and, at the earliest practicable time, for the Public Administrator to complete the probate proceedings and to close out the estate. The Special Administrator will submit to the court for reimbursement invoices reflecting the legal expenses incurred in connection with the Voyager International claims.
