paulmoomjean@yahoo.com s we enter the heart of the summer of 2022, there are two burning questions: How much more money can Top Gun: Maverick make and who is going to be running for president in 2024? Okay. Maybe neither of these are the top two questions, but both play a significant role in looking to the future. If the $1 billion grossing Top Gun sequel and Netflix record-breaking season of Stranger Things have taught us anything, the country and the world are yearning for nostalgia. The fact that 1980s appreciation has swept across our popular culture platforms proves that we still seek the past more than we do the future. So, if we can look at each era as having its own identity, with the ’80s and ’90s looking forward and a post9/11 and pandemic culture looking backwards, then I think we can agree that the future of our political landscape is wrapped in the com-

fort of what we know instead of the uncertainty of what we don’t know.

If you look at how we elect presidents since the invention of televised debates in the 1960s, you’ll see how important good looks and charisma became. But as time went on, the country started looking to relics to lead us. If Ronald Reagan was a throwback to old Hollywood heroes, and George H.W. Bush an ode to moderate Teddy Roosevelt conservatism, then Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were novelties to the “look forward” and “hope” crowds. But through the past two elections, we’ve gone backward.

We’ve relied on the past to make us feel good about our future.

The GOP tried to move forward in 2016 with Marco Rubio, only to watch him be evaporated by Trump and Chris Christie. The DNC threw Pete Buttigieg out there, only to watch him fail. Heck, even Bernie Sanders has been more popular.

Ironically, by having back-to-back dinosaurs as president, the American people have buyer’s remorse,

but will it change voting patterns?

CNN reports, “[Trump’s] favorable rating stands at 43% with an unfavorable rating of 52%. That makes for a net favorability rating of -9 points.” (“Donald Trump has become more popular since the January 6 Capitol attack,” Harry Enten, June 11, 2022.) Later, CNN reported that “In a new Monmouth University poll, just 36% of Americans approve of the job Joe Biden is doing — the lowest mark of his presidency to date in the survey.” (“How low can Joe Biden go in the polls?” Chris Cillizza, July 6, 2022.)

As for the next election, two names keep popping up: California Governor Gavin Newsom and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Both became stars as their states handled the coronavirus differently. Newsom shut California down and faced being recalled. DeSantis opened up and watched growth, until calling out Disney for their opposition to anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Both are looking to run

in 2024, yet they couldn’t be any different. Newsom has been calling out the DNC for not fighting for Roe v. Wade, encouraging Floridians to move to California where he promises to keep a pro-choice option.

“Everybody is trying to be relevant for the next race. [Newsom] came through the recall election and he’s doing a pretty good job as governor. However, I think ambition makes people do different things,” said Cedric Richmond, a former senior Biden White House official, in a June 23 article published by Politico (“Gavin Newsom jumps onto the national stage and Bidenworld takes notice,” Christopher Cadelago and David Siders). The same article also quoted DNC contributor John Morgan: “They don’t know if Biden is going to run or not . . . They are thinking, ‘I don’t know if I am going to be at the swim meet or not, but I am going to put my bathing suit on anyway.’”

What Newsom has going for

him more than anything is those classical good looks. “He looks like a million dollars,” Morgan added of Newsom. “And he looks at the Democratic bench and he doesn’t see anyone sitting there, so he says, ‘I am going to sit there.’”

Newsom’s critics see him as the empty suit. Rich Pedroncelli of the Wall Street Journal wrote an op-ed about how dangerous of a move it would be for Newsom to leave the safe left coast nest. “Once Mr. Newsom takes his show on the road, he’ll quickly find the scrutiny that has escaped him in California.

His slicked-back act won’t play in Iowa cornfields, New Hampshire snows or South Carolina towns.”

Meanwhile DeSantis has started fundraising in Utah and is slowly trying to find his footing as a national player. While both these men see themselves as the future of their parties, if history is doomed to repeat itself, I’m still predicting a Biden v. Trump 2024 election, unless the ’80s “hasbeens” tell us otherwise.

NEWS “A project for the community” Former Ojai Valley Bowl could become restaurant and recreation venue

awilson@timespublications.com t’s been decades since anyone enjoyed bowling in Ojai, but now the site of a vacant and dilapidated bowling alley could be transformed into a farm-to-table restaurant featuring outdoor games including bocce ball, shuffleboard and ping pong.

The idea for the 1.64-acre property received a mostly positive response from the Ojai Planning Commission at a July 6 “concept review” meeting.

Ojai-based landscape architect Bill Mellett told the Ventura County Reporter after the meeting that he hopes the restaurant featuring indoor and outdoor seating amid extensive landscaping with oak and sycamore trees will be a draw for Ojai residents and visitors alike.

“It’s an exciting project. It’s a project for the community,” said Mellett.

The former Ojai Valley Bowl is on a commercial stretch of Ojai Avenue lined with hotels, restaurants and boutiques. City documents say the bowling alley at 1202 East Ojai Avenue

was “abandoned” in the 1990s based on the last business license issued for the site. Several uses have been proposed since the bowling alley’s closure including retail, manufacturing and office space. A boutique hotel proposal was also discussed by the planning commission in 2016.

But things could finally be turning around for the property, considered one of the most blighted in Ojai, thanks to the latest proposal by the owners of Ojai Mountain Farm, located in the Upper Ojai Valley.

Tony Yanow owns both Ojai Mountain Farm and the bowling alley property. He addressed the commission from Europe via an audio link and said the restaurant location in the center of Ojai will be an extension of Ojai Mountain Farm which he described as “organic and regenerative.”

“Our goal is to have grounds that exemplify a lot of the things that we’re growing up at the farm,” he told commissioners. “So small example gardens of some of the things that we’re growing for patrons to enjoy and walk through, and get a sense of what kinds of stuff we’re doing.”

Yanow said he plans to sell produce grown at the farm from a deli inside the building and make dishes with the farm's produce as well.

“We’re looking forward to being able to share the beauty and charm of Santa Paula,” said Santa Paula public information officer Jonathan Royas, even though it’s not yet decided where passengers would board excursion trains in the future.

leased the former Santa Paula Hay and Grain building for a base of operations after contract negotiations reached the end of the line for city-owned property in Fillmore where tourist trains once departed and the company had offices.

The major shift for local railroad operations came after Sierra Northern signed a 30-year lease for use of the Santa Paula Branch Line tracks and right-of-way which is owned by the Ventura County Transportation Commission and stretches from Ventura to Piru.

The building leased by the company in Santa Paula is only expected to be used for a year or two, but Royas said it’s a positive development that Sierra Northern Railway now has their base of operations in Santa Paula.

“We’re happy to welcome Sierra Northern to Santa Paula and we look forward to working with them,”

He said he expected that the old bowling alley would need to be completely torn down when he bought the property to redevelop, but the architects figured out a way to reuse some of the old 16,000 square foot building, including the steel beams, in creating the restaurant that will be about half that size.

Architect Marc Whitman said it will be a fun place to hang out while enjoying food and drinks, similar to other restaurants Yanow owns, such as nearby Ojai Pub. “He’s famous for doing these family-friendly brew pubs,” Whitman said of Yanow. “He’s a restaurateur and he’s kind of known for bringing in games and an atmosphere that’s conducive to kids and families to enjoy.

He’s like the game master, he’s got all these games he’s going to bring into it.”

Mellett said the grounds will have extensive landscaping and other amenities for customers to enjoy. “There’s a potential splash pad for the kids to play in. There’s a dry stream bed that during rain events would contain water and then go dry in the off season. There may be a small recirculating water feature.”

Charging stations for electric cars are also planned that will have their own solar panels on top and will be built in an artistic way, according to the plan.

Commissioner Judy Murphy said she was happy with the details presented. “The concept is wonderful, I really like the landscaping.”

Gabriel Reilly lives next to the proposed restaurant and told the planning commission that it would improve the neighborhood. “I think it’s a really cool project so I’d love to see it happen. That bowling alley is certainly a blight.”

After the meeting, Whitman said he was happy with the reactions from

the commissioners and neighbors about the plan.

“We couldn’t be more happy with the feedback. The comments are fairly receptive of the project. There were some comments about noise so we hope to address those when we come back,” he said.

The planning commission did not take any formal action on the plan since it was only up for conceptual review. The next steps will involve a formal submittal to the city which will include a study on lighting impacts.

Since the project still has a long way to go through the planning process, it’s expected it will take at least two years before it’s built if it ultimately wins approval from city leaders.

Sierra Northern Ventura Division Manager Matt Blackburn said the building leased as a temporary base of operations will be used for things like offices and storing trucks, but not ticket sales and boarding for excursion trains. The 1.5-acre property has a 4,000-square-foot building. While there are train tracks next to the property, for the long term,

company officials are looking for a property where they can build new rails for their base of operations, Blackburn explained.

While it’s still unclear where the excursion trains will board, Blackburn said they hope to have them running by the end of the year.

The tourist trains will be operated by a sister company, Mendocino Railroad, which runs the popular Skunk Train in Fort Bragg that takes passengers through scenic forested

mountains.

Blackburn said railbike tours are offered along the Skunk Train line as well as a route near Sacramento where the River Fox Train also carries sightseers. The railbike rentals on those lines are a big hit with people who’ve tried them out, he said.

Railbikes have pedals as well as an electric motor for an added boost.

“They like it because it’s something fun and different. It’s a different way to get out and explore. It’s a very nice and relaxing ride. You get to see different things you don’t get

to see. For example you may be able to see a little more wildlife because they’re not as loud as a train,” he said.

Blackburn said they also want to bring back holiday-themed excursion trains like ones that took people to a Christmas tree farm to cut down trees when the branch line was previously leased by Fillmore and Western Railway.

While Sierra Northern is in the process of moving off property owned by the city of Fillmore, the company will continue to have a

presence in Fillmore. Tracks the company is leasing from the VCTC in Fillmore will continue to be used for storing trains, Blackburn said.

The VCReporter asked Fillmore City Manager David Rowlands if Fillmore residents are disappointed that negotiations to keep the excursion train operation in Fillmore did not pan out with Sierra Northern.

“I think the residents trusted the city and did what was best for the city,” Rowlands said. “We wish them well in Santa Paula.”

What is this about?

The lawsuit claims that Plains All American Pipeline L.P. and Plains Pipeline L.P. (“Plains” or “Defendants”) caused an underground pipeline to rupture, resulting in an oil spill along the coast in Santa Barbara County on May 19, 2015. The Settlement is on behalf of members of the Fisher Class and Property Class previously certified by this Court. Plaintiffs for the Fisher Class allege the spill caused long term harm to commercial fishing in the affected class blocks, including significant financial losses. Plaintiffs for the Property Class allege that owners and lessees were unable to use and enjoy their properties as a result of the spill because oil washed up onto their properties and onto beaches adjacent to their properties. Plains denies any claims of wrongdoing and disputes all claims. The Settlement, if approved by the Court, will resolve all remaining claims in the class action litigation pending in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The Fisher Class Settlement is $184 million, and the Property Class Settlement is $46 million, inclusive of attorneys’ fees and costs.

The Court has not decided whether Plaintiffs or Defendants should win this Litigation. The Settling Parties do not agree on whether Plaintiffs would have prevailed on any of their claims against Plains, or the amount of damages, if any, that would be recoverable if the Class prevailed on the claims alleged. Instead, both sides agreed to the Settlement after years of contested litigation, including at the motion to dismiss, class certification, and summary judgment stages. The Parties had also completed substantial discovery and were preparing for trial to commence on June 2, 2022.

Who is affected?

You are a Fisher Class Member if you are a person or business who owned or worked on a vessel that was in operation as of May 19, 2015 and that: (1) landed any commercial seafood in California Department of Fish & Wildlife (“CDFW”) fishing blocks 654, 655, or 656; or (2) landed any commercial seafood, except groundfish or highly migratory species (as defined by the CDFW and the Pacific Fishery Management Council), in CDFW fishing blocks 651-656, 664-670, 678-686, 701-707, 718-726, 739-746, 760-765, or 806-809; from May 19, 2010 to May 19, 2015, inclusive; or if you are a person or business in operation as of May 19, 2015 who purchased such commercial seafood directly from the Commercial Fishers and re-sold it at the retail or wholesale level. What does the Settlement provide?

The Settlement, if approved, will result in the creation of two cash settlement funds of $184,000,000 (the “Fisher Class Settlement Amount”) and $46,000,000 (“the Property Class Settlement Amount”), together with any interest earned thereon, the “Fisher Class Common Fund” and “Property Class Common Fund,” respectively. Who represents the Class?

The Court has appointed Lieff Cabraser Heimann Bernstein LLP, Keller Rohrback L.L.P., Cappello & Noel LLP, and Audet & Partners, LLP (“Class Counsel”) to be the attorneys representing the Class. You will not be charged for these lawyers. Class Counsel will apply to the Court for an award of attorneys’ fees in an amount not to exceed 33% of the total Settlement Amount (no more than $60,720,000 from the Fisher Class Settlement Amount and $15,180,000 from the Property Class Settlement Amount). In addition, Class Counsel will apply to the Court for reimbursement of their litigation expenses (in an amount not to exceed $5.2 million from the Fisher Class Settlement Amount and $1.3 million from the Property Class Settlement Amount). At the hearing the Court will determine whether: (1) the Settlement of $184,000,000 for the Fisher Class and $46,000,000 for the Property Class should be approved by the Court as fair, reasonable and adequate; (2) the Judgment as provided under the Settlement Agreement should be entered; (3) to award Class Counsel attorneys’ fees and expenses out of the Fisher and Property Class Common Funds and, if so, in what amount; (4) to award Plaintiffs’ service awards (Class Counsel is requesting $15,000 for each of the 14 Class Representatives) in connection with their representation of the Classes out of the Fisher and Property Class Common Funds and, if so, in what amount; and (5) the Plans of Distribution should be approved by the Court.

Voted the No. 1 music festival in Ventura County, the event features three days of live music, surfing and various beach activities with a Western-themed twist.

In addition to offering ample fun and sunshine to festival goers, the rodeo also supports several local charities. Surf Rodeo works to make sure that Ventura is not only having fun, but that the community is well cared for as well.

This year’s Surf Rodeo will feature a variety of activities, both classics and new additions.

There will of course be the Surf Contest with vintage surfboards, the Cornhole Tournament, the Greased Pig Saddle Race, a hay bale obstacle course, the notorious Cowgirl (and now Cowboy) mechanical bull-riding contest, and many others. The festival also includes live performances by over 40 bands, a charity raffle of a 1963 Ford Econoline Pickup Truck, and the world’s largest beach bar.

“The original idea was to take the seriousness out of surfing and make it something really fun and that involved the community,” says Tami Winbury, one of the event’s organizers. “It started to attract big names . . . Jack Johnson used to come, Kelly Slater. It started in 1997 and continued for five years, they took a 10-year break and started again in 2013 and that’s when I got involved. We got together a whole big crew of people and we brought it back!”

But before it became a big crew and a massive project, it began as the brainchild of a small group of friends. This group included surf-enthusiast JD Drury.

“We all come from a background of surfing, lots of contests and such,” explains Drury. “We didn’t want to make just another boring surf contest. That’s where the idea to use old-school surf boards, cowboy hats and to make it a western theme and call it Surf Rodeo came from.”

For over a century, Ventura has been the home to a prolific ranching community. Those from outside the area might not expect a Cal-

ifornia coastal county to accommodate cowboys, but any Ventura resident can tell you that the ranches of Ojai and Somis are just as central to the community as our golden beaches.

Surf Rodeo recognizes this juxtaposition.

“We do have real cowboys that come to the rodeo . . . Ventura really does have a lot of cowboys and surfers, so it makes sense for those two cultures to co-mingle for a weekend,” explains Drury.

Giving Back

The festival also recognizes the importance of sustaining a community and is very involved with various local charities. It has given over $60,000 to the Boys & Girls Club since 2013.

All the money from this year’s truck raffle will go to Boys & Girls Club as well as the Young and Brave Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing support to families battling cancer.

Surf Rodeo also supports A Walk on Water, where pro surfers provide lessons and surf therapy to children with disabilities, in addition to several other charities.

“For us, giving back to the community has always been one of our top projects,” says Winbury. “We always make a point to include the nonprofits.”

“It’s important to give back and be a community,” Drury adds. “We’re a very community-based event . . . The energy is really bubbling as far as people wanting to get back out there and come to the rodeo. We have a lot of local bands performing but we have national acts, too. So, at the same time that it’s [the] community, it’s also people from beyond Ventura coming to have a good time.”

British Invasion alums the Zombies coming to Ojai

reg Lake once said that making a comeback with dignity was one of the most difficult things to do. That said, the late Emerson, Lake and Palmer founding member must have missed out on what was going on with his fellow countrymen, the Zombies.

That latter group broke up virtually penniless in 1967, only to see Odessey and Oracle, their 1968 sophomore bow, spawn the 1969 American top three hit “Time of the Season.”

By then the individual members had moved on to other projects.

Fast forward six decades to 1999, and founding members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent hit the road to perform as a duo, before evolving into a full-blown Zombies reunion that’s carried on to the present day. It’s an astonishing turnabout for this beloved baroque pop act that not only received critical acclaim, but earned themselves a devoted cult following that translated into the group’s induction in 2019 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The ever-modest Blunstone is humble about the response and affection his band has been receiving at this late date.

“Isn’t [our] induction incredible? I’m really thrilled, actually. Firstly, that loyal and tenacious fans voted over 320,000 times for us in the fan vote. It’s just mind-boggling to me that you can get 320,000 votes. And secondly, that the members of the Rock Hall should have voted to induct us because all musicians are looking for peer group acceptance,” he admitted. “It’s such a lift 14 —

to get that kind of reaction from fellow professionals. It’s really beyond my wildest imagination that we should be honored in this way and I’m extremely grateful.”

Also known for their other 1964 hits, “She’s Not There” and “Tell Her No,” the Zombies arrived as part of the British Invasion alongside the Animals, the Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, the Hollies, the Kinks and the Dave Clark Five. Only 18 when the band was started, Argent and Blunstone were joined by fellow St. Albans natives Hugh Grundy, future A&R exec Paul Atkinson and Paul Arnold, who was replaced

by Chris White when the band went to record its first album. The combination of Blunstone’s airy vocal phrasing and Argent’s deftly played organ runs gave the band’s material a sophisticated, chamber pop nuance that took them beyond the charts and earned them a number of latter-day famous fans, including the late Tom Petty and Paul Weller.

The posthumous fame the Zombies had after their first break-up led to an odd situation where American promoters wound up putting three different fake Zombies groups on the road in 1969 to capitalize on the success of “Time of the Season.” In those pre-Internet days, when fans only knew what the band sounded like and couldn’t use Google to see what they looked like, it was an easy scam to pull off. One outfit even included Frank Beard and Dusty Hill, the future rhythm section of ZZ Top. The actual Zombies were eventually told about this and White talked to the manager of one of these fake groups for an article that was eventually written about this sce-

vcreporter.com nario. Blunstone gets a kick out of this anecdote.

“Someone at Rolling Stone (magazine) got Chris White to come into their office and phone the manager of one of these bands and not say who he was,” Blunstone recalled. “Chris then asked him to explain about the Zombies band. So the manager told him this story about how they were all huge fans of the Zombies and since the lead singer was killed in a car crash, they wanted to honor him and the band by keeping the music going, and that’s why they were playing [under our name]. Then Chris White told him he was the Zombies bass player and that the lead singer wasn’t in a car crash. Reading this in print, it was almost like reading my obituary when I was 22 years old.”

Despite the band breaking up, the Zombies stayed in touch. Argent and White went on to find success, while Blunstone reaped his own solo acclaim in the UK with a string of hits that never quite cracked the American market.

Argent and White even produced Blunstone’s first two solo outings (which have recently both been re-released in deluxe editions), and White took the production helm for Blunstone’s 1974 effort Journey.

The latter-day Zombies roster found Blunstone and Argent rounding out the lineup with guitarist Tom Toomey, the late Jim Rodford on bass and Rodford’s son, Steve, on drums.

Rodford, who was Argent’s first cousin, was previously the Kinks bassist from 1978 until 1996. He joined the Zombies in 2004 and played with them until his death on Jan. 20,

MUSIC 2018. A memorial service/musical performance was held on the year-anniversary of his death in his hometown of St. Albans. Joining Argent and Blunstone were the surviving members of the Zombies, Chris White and Hugh Grundy (Atkinson died in 2004) and opening the show was ARC, made up of Rodford’s granddaughters, Anya and Cara, and his son, Russ. It was a cherished moment for Blunstone.

“I like to think that Jim was smiling down at us and enjoying the evening,” Blunstone said. “It was an emotional evening with tinges of sadness, but it turned out to be a wonderful evening as well with plenty of laughter.”

Showing no signs of slowing down, Blunstone is busy touring solo and with the Zombies, with plans to record a new album with the latter. It’s all a bit of a whirlwind that the vocalist intends to embrace at every turn.

“So in the last few years, things have gone very well for the Zombies. We’re mature enough now to really appreciate it, because we know how tough this business is,” he said. “That’s why I think we’re very fortunate to enjoy this kind of adventure at this time in our lives. It doesn’t happen to many people that they get these kinds of opportunities at this time in their lives. Salzer’s and Safeport have partnered together to breathe new life into the beloved video store where locals explored countless film titles for more than 40 years. Safeport is one of eight applicants vying for an exclusive three commercial retail permits in the City of Ventura. Their common vision to revitalize the two-story building, which is nestled against the Historic Ventura Highway and Victoria Avenue, into a premium retail cannabis dispensary with a mission to offer an upscale guest experience and a commitment to preserving the integrity and unique charm of Ventura.

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

Local legend Jim Salzer was a predominant presence in Ventura County for over 50 years. Salzer’s Records, which is situated across the street from its former video counterpart, is a beacon for music lovers to discover sound ranging from underground to mainstream artists. The Salzer family dedicated their passions

towards sharing their love for creativity and artist expression with their local neighbors. For the last seven years, they envisioned reinventing the video store into a cannabis retail location and awaited a partnership that embodied everything the Salzer family believed in. We began working on the idea of turning the Video Store into a dispensary over 7 years ago. We met with over a dozen different groups trying to find the right fit. While Jim Salzer passed away in March of 2020, we continued searching until we found the perfect match with Safeport.

Safeport’s plan to revitalize the building will renew luster to what is often referred to as the gateway to Ventura.

ow do you make a million dollars in the wine industry?

Start with $10 million.

So the old saying goes — for good reason. While many a wine connoisseur has been seduced by the allure of the vintner’s lifestyle, none have found the reality to be as smooth or rich as their favorite vintage.

That didn’t deter three men — Paul Douville, Tim Germaine and Alan Wharton — from rushing in where angels fear to tread. Hence, the name of Ventura’s latest boutique wine venture, Trois le Fou. “Our name loosely translates to the three lunatics or fools, as most people know that starting a winery is for the insane,” the business states proudly on its website.
