An antique alexandrite gem can be used for engagement rings.

Choose an “alternative” ring The “alternative ring” is growing in popularity, with brides- and grooms-tobe shopping for pre-owned, one-of-akind pieces from vintage or estate jewelry stores instead of buying the traditional round-cut diamond ring.

“Using great-grandmother’s heirloom ring only adds sentimental value to your collection,” Nollenberger said. You can also shop for diamonds or other gemstones grown in a lab, available at sites such as MiaDonna. You might also consider natural stone pieces in lieu of diamonds.

“Many stones have been ethically sourced,” said Nollenberger, adding that prospective buyers should “look for certificates of them being ‘fair traded.’ ” that your caterer uses local and organic produce.

“We love using small-batch farmers that allow menus to be focused on seasonal selections,” Nollenberger said. “If you have watermelon on your menu and your wedding is in February, most likely that isn’t being sourced locally.” Also, be conscious of where the proteins come from. For example, Santa Monica Seafood is one of the best providers of local, fresh, sustainable seafood on the West Coast. You can also pair your dinner menu with organic wines, which refrain from using herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers or genetically modified seeds, and do not have added sulfites

“Check that they are certified organic or biodynamic,” Nollenberger added. “Biodynamic wines are often harvested under lunar cycles and include energy and water saving techniques.”

Serve your delicious, locally sourced cuisine on eco-friendly, compostable plates. VerTerra, for example, creates serving wear from fallen palm leaves, which means no trees were harvested or planted to make these plates and forks. The products are crafted without lacquers, chemicals or bonding agents — and are completely biodegradable and certified as suitable for the compost bin.

Rent a dress

For women who can’t imagine spending several thousand dollars on a new wedding dress they’ll only wear once, brides-to-be can rent a dress for their big day, as can their bridesmaids.

Such dresses can be found on sites including Rent The Runway, which offers luxury rental wear. Also, sites like Once Wed and PreOwned Wedding Dresses offer a variety of vintage fabrics and discounted wears at a fraction of the full price.

“Most grooms rent suits – why shouldn’t brides be able to rent their dress?” Nollenberger added. “Time to change the status quo.” ♥

Keep the menu eco-friendly

Because food is one of the biggest slices of a wedding budget, “It’s important to note what you can do to keep the menu eco-friendly,” Nollenberger advised.

Farm-to-table is here to stay, she noted, adding that you should check The VerTerra plate is an eco-friendly compostable plate that can be used instead of renting china.

Homegrown wish list Build a gift registry to support local business Register for a high-flying experience with Tandem Coastal Skydive in Camarillo through Vebolife.com. ou’re planning for your wedding and you want every aspect of it to reflect who you are. From the style, to the food, to the location and of course the dress — it all creates an image of the kind of life you want to live.

When you sit down to build your registry, it’s fun at first, as you’re choosing bedding, kitchen supplies, furniture and more. Then you realize that everything is coming from big-name stores out of Ventura County. Then you consider that everything will be packed and shipped, using boxes and packing material and diesel-powered ships and trucks to get the items to your front door.

Many modern brides and grooms prefer to shop local in their daily lives — going to the farmers market, dining in family-owned restaurants, shopping in neighborhood boutiques for clothes and jewelry — and can, with a little planning, bring that aspect into their wedding registries, too. From fabulous home décor stores to organic linen purveyors to fine dining establishments and more, there are many ways to build a locally based registry.

The first decision: do-it-yourself or a little help? If you have time and the inclination, you can certainly make your own list of items (and experiences — more on that later) to type up, email or print and include in your wedding Y by Kimberly Rivers kimberly@vcreporter.com
