The University of Arizona is the first fouryear university in the state of Arizona to be federally recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education, which occurred in April 2018. This federal designation recognizes colleges and universities that have at least 25% undergraduate Hispanic enrollment and accounts for programs and services designed to support students with diverse backgrounds. Recently, the UArizona was one of nine colleges and universities across the nation that were awarded the inaugural Seal of Excelencia, a new national and comprehensive certification awarded by Excelencia in Education to institutions that intentionally serve Latino/a students and demonstrate positive student outcomes.

With 11 community colleges throughout Arizona that are also federally recognized as an HSI, the UArizona is well poised to be the primary transfer destination for many students. In fact, a 2017 survey among UArizona transfer students revealed that 95% of respondents agreed that faculty empowered them to learn and 92% agreed that they experienced open channels of communication with faculty regarding their needs, concerns, and suggestions.

Arizona Online, A Bridge to a Degree with Bragging Rights, 100% Online

The University of Arizona is proud to announce that the transfer student Bridge Scholarship is now available to all eligible Arizona Online transfer students!

This scholarship, renewable for up to 3 years, offers an opportunity for students currently attending a Maricopa Community College a way to make a university degree more affordable. Eligibility requirements include having a 2.5 cumulative college GPA and completion of 36 units at the time of UArizona admissions. Once enrolled, students need to maintain continuous

enrollment and a 2.0 GPA in order for the scholarship to be automatically applied each term.

Find Yourself at the University of Arizona

KIMBERLYN GUZMAN had a dream to attend the University of Arizona, and was fortunate enough to be accepted right out of high school!

When she realized that she could not quite afford it yet, she chose to pursue her Associate’s in Arts Degree from Phoenix College (PC) in the Maricopa Community College District, and she’s glad that she did. Kimberlyn’s stellar academic performance earned her scholarships to attend PC and led her to join Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the Honors Program at PC. Due to her hard work, Kimberlyn qualified for UA’s largest transfer scholarship when she re-applied to UA, the PTK scholarship for $5000, and realized her UArizona dream! She chose to complete her Associate’s before transferring because she wanted to be able to transfer as many credits as possible to UArizona and remain debt free. What was her favorite part about PC? According to Kimberlyn, the “caring and knowledgeable professors at PC, and the help that she received in the Honors Program to prepare for a four-year university.” This transfer rock star continues to do very well at UArizona and plans to graduate in December 2019 with her BA in Communication and minors in Film & Television, and Marketing. However, before she does, she will continue to work at UA’s Transfer Student Center.

“One of the best things about UArizona is the Transfer Student Center. There aren’t many 4-year colleges that offer a physical space where transfer students can connect with one another and enjoy the resources that are offered at the center.” After graduation, Kimberlyn hopes to achieve her next dream, to become a screenwriter or a public relations writer!

Prior Learning Assessment May Shorten the Road to Graduation

O

ne in five Americans of working age has some college credit but no degree, according to the 2016 Stronger Nation report from Lumina Foundation, the nation’s largest private foundation focusing solely on increasing American’s success in higher education.

Because the majority of college students balance a combination of family responsi-

bilities, work responsibilities, and schoolwork, it is not surprising that students often take longer than originally expected or never complete a college degree. In other words, “life happens.”

One way colleges and universities are helping students’ accelerate their progress toward graduaton is through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), which allows students to earn college credit for dem-

onstrated mastery in settings outside the traditional classroom. Common sources of credit for prior learning include military training, professional licensure or certification, examination programs, and vocational education.

PLA can also save students money.

For instance, a student who takes an Advanced Placement (AP) exam (one type of prior learning) in high school can earn credit for one or more courses, depending on his or her exam score. In the case of AP exams, for under a hundred dollars, a student can take one exam and potentially earn credit for courses that would have cost far more in tuition. Plus, when PLA helps a student graduate sooner, he or she may start a career or advance in the workplace sooner.

Students with advanced courses in high school, military experience, corporate training, or professional certification may have college credit and not realize it. If

working adults have extensive work experience but no degree and are unable to advance without one, PLA can help make a college degree attainable. Students who plan to transfer from one institution to another should become familiar with both institutions’ PLA policies, because prior learning may be evaluated and applied differently.

At the Maricopa Community Colleges, a maximum of 30 credits for prior learning may be applied toward an associate’s degree. Within that maximum, up to 20 may be applied within a student’s general education requirements. Students should talk to enrollment services staff, including academic advisors, at their college to discuss the potential of Prior Learning Assessment within their degree or certificate program. Students may also be referred, when necessary, to faculty program directors for assistance in evaluating prior learning.

AZTransfer Simplifies Transfer Planning AZTransfer is a free online college planning tool that helps students taking community college courses know how their credits can transfer to Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Arizona. ALL ABOUT THE AGEC A smooth transfer from your community college to Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, or University of Arizona begins with the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC).

AGEC OPTIONS There are three types of AGEC blocks designed for different types of community college majors – AGEC A, B, and S. AGEC-A. AGEC-A is for liberal or fine arts majors.

Examples: English, Education, Communication, Dance AGEC-B. The AGEC-B is for business majors.

Examples: Accounting, Economics, Finance, Marketing

AGEC-S. AGEC-S is for majors with more rigorous math and science requirements. Examples: Biology, Chemistry, Engineering

AGEC BENEFITS • A completed AGEC transfers as a block to ASU, NAU, UA, or any Arizona public or tribal community college, without loss of credit.

BUILDING YOUR TRANSFER DEGREE Build your transfer degree with three blocks of courses – AGEC, elective and common, and upper division university courses. Up to 64 community college credits can be transferred to the university to count toward your bachelor’s degree. A bachelor’s degree is approximately 120 credit hours.

You may have already earned college credit in high school through dual enrollment and exams for credit. Make sure to factor these into your degree plan!

TRANSFER STEPS • Take Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) Courses. The AGEC consists of 35-37 credit hours of courses in English, math, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences, and arts and humanities.

• Choose a Major and Degree. Decide what associate’s degree you want to earn at the community college and what bachelor’s degree and major you intend to pursue at the university. Make sure to choose community college classes that align with your degree interests!

What is the MAPP?

The MAPP helps you plan for your transfer to ASU. You’ll follow a course plan that details what courses to complete at your Maricopa Community College that will allow for a smooth transfer to your major at ASU. Signing up for the MAPP confirms you are taking the right courses at the right time prior to transferring and provides a seamless path toward completing your bachelor’s degree at ASU.

What’s the biggest benefit of the MAPP?

You are guaranteed admission to your major at ASU when all MAPP requirements are met. And you receive support along the way as you complete your community college coursework, including access to ASU transfer specialists, special online tools such as a My ASU account and the Pathway Tracker, and ASU communications that keep you updated with important university information.

Meet Ty

Transferred from: Scottsdale Community College Major: Graphic Information Technology United States veteran Ty began his career as a wildland firefighter after serving in the military. As a firefighter, Ty contemplated pursuing higher education, saying, “I would talk to my family and my engine captain about going to school, using my GI bill, and deciding if fighting fire was going to be my end all be all. I sat and thought often about what I wanted to do in my life. I concluded that the best position I could put myself in was to go to school and pursue a degree,” so he began his studies at Scottsdale Community College.

Ty knew that starting off at a community college would help him get back into a life of academics and prepare for university. “The last thing I wanted to do was begin unprepared, so I thought I could get back into the swing of things

by starting slow at a community college — not trying to overdo it or overwhelm myself while simultaneously relearning everything I had forgotten after being in the workforce. The community college level was the perfect fit for what I was looking for. I wanted to ease myself back into the processes of going to school and for me, there wasn’t a better way.”

While a student at Scottsdale Community College, Ty became more acclimated to college life and improved in his studies, even receiving an invitation to join the honors program. He says, “After my first couple of semesters I received an email offering me a scholarship. My GPA was high enough to qualify and I was truly in awe. Starting in remedial math, not receiving college credit for my first couple of courses, to getting an honors invitation. It gave me that positive impact that I was truly looking for. It put me in the right mindset and showed me that I could do it! That I could be successful in school.” Starting at a community college also allowed Ty to really consider what he wanted to do. “While at SCC, I sat and evaluated everything I had done in my life and what I aspired to do. I pondered what I was really trying to do in my life and what I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life.”

Signing up for the Maricopa to ASU Pathway Program (MAPP) further helped Ty prepare for transferring to ASU. “The MAPP gave me a step-by-step checklist that just made my life so much easier.

It provided a ‘map’ that I could easily

understand and navigate. It laid out my classes one by one and paved the way towards earning my associate degree.”

Wanting to stay close to family in Arizona, Ty knew that Arizona State University was the place for him. “ASU has always been a dream of mine. Being a Sun Devil, staying close to home and family were all very important aspects to me.” ASU’s nationally recognized prestige confirmed for Ty that he had made the right choice. “A school that’s number one in innovation, as someone aspiring to be a creator, a designer and an engineer, I couldn’t think of a better school that would allow me the creative freedoms to express any idea I saw fit.”

As a Graphic Information Technology student, Ty enjoys all aspects of being at ASU, including the challenges. “Sometimes life is easy and other times you’ve got to grit your teeth and step up to the plate.

ASU has always been such a great place that really makes you think out of the box while simultaneously being in the box.

It has given me so many ways to express my creativity while being focused on the overall objective.” His favorite class has been the computing and informatics course for video game development, which he says is a great place to start for getting into the video game industry.

Ty’s advice to new transfer students is simple: “Work hard.” After graduating with his bachelor’s degree, Ty plans to enter the workforce in a field he is passionate about.

“Ideally, I’d love to work as an animator for DC comics. That’s the ultimate goal.”
