Boys & Girls Club of East Valley is a communitybased, character building, youth development organization. They deliver the highest quality programs and provide opportunities to assist youth and teens in developing their self-esteem, values and skills in a safe and fun environment. Their professionals guide members through personal, educational and social development to realize their full potential and become

positive, value-oriented and productive citizens. Boys and Girls Clubs of the East Valley offer life-changing programs to more than 43,000 children and teens every year.

Our giving tree is adorned with ornaments listing children’s ages from 5yrs to 18yrs old, and gifts ranging from $15 and $25. So when you are running around town, please stop by one of the Chamberlain Orthodontic offices, pick out an ornament or two, and help make a child’s season brighter. A Giving Tree has been set up at both of our office locations.

McCullough-Price House looking back

Gridiron

The 1938 McCullough-Price House, with its faux adobe look, latillas and vigas, is a quintessential example of Pueblo Revivalstyle architecture. Commissioned by William McCullough, a wealthy Detroit businessman, and designed by notable Phoenix architects Royal Lescher and Leslie Mahoney, the house sat on 320 acres 3 miles outside of Chandler.

McCullough was a gentleman farmer in the truest sense of the word. He referred to the house as his “farm,” although he actually leased the surrounding fields to farmers and never actually participated in farming himself.

McCullough died a few years after he built the house, and it passed through several owners until the Price family purchased it in 1950.

Marrying into the Chandler family, Price was No date. a business partner with Dr. A.J. Chandler. The Price family owned the house until 2001, when they donated it to the City of Chandler. After extensive renovations, it reopened as the Chandler Museum at 300 S. Chandler Village Dr.

A Dramatic Finish for Area Prep Football Teams Gridiron

Chandler High School Wolves 350 N. Arizona Ave., Chandler www.chandlerwolvesfootball.com Head coach: Shaun Aguano 2014 record: 10-1 Chandler was the preseason favorite by many to win the Division I state football championship, but the Wolves knew that seeding was everything in the postseason. So the team sought a strong finish to the 2014 campaign.

In Week 8, the Wolves battled nearby Perry High School and dominated the Pumas 56-21. Chandler jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and would coast to the big victory behind its usual cast of stars. Senior quarterback Bryce Perkins threw 369 yards and six touchdown passes as the Wolves’ offense lit up the scoreboard.

Defensively, the Wolves overwhelmed Perry, holding the Pumas scoreless through the first half and picking off Perry quarterback Austin Nightingale two times.

In Week 9, the Wolves crushed the Basha Bears, 55-10, giving the Wolves a perfect 3-0 record against its three intra-city rival schools.

After missing one game, Chase Lucas was back on the field, pacing the Wolves rushing attached with 90 yards and a touchdown, while Micah ReedCampos ran for two touchdowns.

Perkins threw three touchdowns, while back-up quarterback Mason Moran threw another in relief.

Defensively, the Wolves held the Bears to just 192 yards of total offense.

Poston Butte pounded the ball on the ground, amassing 338 yards.

Mesquite sophomore quarterback Preston Smith threw two touchdown passes—to seniors Jake Bowen and Kenny Rothe—but the Wildcats’ offense stalled throughout the contest, managing only 178 yards of total offense.

Things were not much better in Week 9 for the Wildcats, as the visiting Marcos de Niza Padres easily won 5215.

Mesquite backs Michael Premraj and Justin Merkel paced a potent Mesquite rushing attack that amassed 246 yards rushing, but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats defense faltered for the second straight week. Marcos de Niza compiled 281 passing yards and five touchdowns, leading the Padres to the blowout win.

In Week 8, the Sentinels routed the Combs Coyotes, 55-0. Senior quarterback Zach Wade threw four touchdown passes, three to Brandon Garcia and one to George Wolter.

Senior back Antonio Campanella amassed 189 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, the Sentinels held the Coyotes to 126 yards of total offense, led by senior linebacker Patrick Larsen, who contributed two sacks, a fumble recovery and seven tackles.

In Week 9, the Sentinels completely dominated Chino Valley, 73-0. Wade tossed two touchdown passes, and also ran for a touchdown, but the night belonged to the Seton Catholic rushing attack. Seven different players ran the ball as they amassed 239 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns, including four for Campanella and two for sophomore Brandon Skinner.

The Sentinels’ defense again was again spectacular, completely stifling Chino Valley and forcing seven turnovers.

In the season finale, the Sentinels notched their fourth consecutive shutout, blanking Rio Rico 61-0. Wade threw four touchdown passes, while a stable of Seton backs rushed for 269 yards and four touchdowns.

Defensively, Larsen and senior defensive lineman Brandon King each contributed seven tackles in another dominant performance.

With plenty of momentum, the top-seeded Sentinels cruised in the first round of the Division IV playoffs, defeating Page High School, 70-0.

Erik Heller—117 rushing yards on 18 carries—was the lone bright spot for the Dobson offense. Defensively, the Mustangs played well, but could not force any big mistakes from the Thunder.

In Week 9, an ugly performance against the playoff-bound Brophy Broncos resulted in a loss, 49-14.

Brophy dominated the Mustangs offense throughout, and controlled the line of scrimmage on offense en route to 328 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

In the season finale, the defending state champion Mountain Pointe Pride visited Dobson High School, and four quarters later traveled back to Ahwatukee with a dominating 5519 win. The Pride offense was firing on all cylinders, rushing for 229 yards and three touchdowns and another three touchdowns via air.

It was a tough way to end what was a promising year for the Dobson Mustangs, but head coach George de la Torre has to like his returning talent.

East Valley Moms Gluten-Free is More Than Just a Fad Diet

By CariAnn Hunt It acts as a poison in the body.

This is how Madeline Bolander described the effect of gluten on those with celiac disease, a disease of the intestines with which she was diagnosed one-and-a-half years ago.

The 17-year-old Gilbert resident said it was difficult to adjust to ridding her life of gluten. She brings her own food when she goes out to eat with friends, but that proved to be hard.

Although there are many restaurants in her area, Bolander said, “There are only about four restaurants I completely trust.”

But more than that, she had to get new makeup, lotion and other products because many contain gluten.

She said there is a surprising amount of products with gluten in them, and she has to be careful. She said anything that could possibly get into her mouth had to be changed.

Bolander specifically remembers finding out she couldn’t use just any kind of ChapStick.

“I do a lot of research and label reading,” she said.

Christy Luedtka, co-president of the Gilbert-based Celiac Disease Foundation Arizona Chapter, said a gluten-free diet is somewhat of a fad, but for those with celiac disease, the lifestyle is a matter of life or death. The country is paying tribute to those with restricted diets this November during gluten-free diet awareness month.

Baking products and canned goods on sale can be stored in your pantry, while fresh produce, like squash and cranberries, can be frozen and stored. Hope Inspires Students at SHARP School

They returned to school three weeks after the accident. With a gentle touch, students ran their fingers through her soft fur with the most love that they could find in their hearts, taking extra care to avoid touching the incision.

Curious about the injury, they peppered the handler with questions like, “Will her leg grow back?” or “What did they do with her leg?”

“We explained that her leg was in the place that they put all legs that are broken,” Reinke said.

Guava-Glazed Pork Tenderloin with Cuban Salsa It was love at first bite—for me and for everyone else at the event catered

by Scottsdale Chef Linda Martin. A guava-glazed pork tenderloin with Cuban salsa prepared by Linda was all people could talk about, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the recipe and serve this ultra-flavorful dish to friends and family.

Linda is a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef who is a Valley favorite with more than 14 years of experience.

She is a popular chef at Sweet Basil Cooking School and Gourmetware in Scottsdale, the featured chef for

Dacor Luxury Appliances and the owner of her own catering company, Linda’s Dinner Designs. I’ve had many dishes created by her, but the guava-glazed tenderloin has become an all-time favorite.

This month, if you’re looking for an exquisite meal for family and guests or just an easy weeknight meal, you can’t go wrong with this pork specialty. Thank you, chef, for sharing it!

Guava-Glazed Pork Tenderloin with Cuban Salsa (4 servings) For the Pork: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 tablespoon minced onion 1 garlic clove, minced 1 can guava nectar (found in most grocery stores in the juice section) 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon ketchup 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper Kosher salt Two (3/4 pound each) pork tenderloins Cilantro sprigs for garnish For the Salsa: 1/3 cup chopped cilantro 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 1/4 cup chopped onion 2 tablespoons chopped chives 2 jalapenos, minced 1 garlic clove, minced Kosher salt

Place a saucepan over medium high heat. Add enough oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pan. When the oil “shimmers” add the onion and cook 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 1 minute. Add the guava nectar and bring to boil. Cook over high heat until reduced to 1 Page 20

cup. Add the soy sauce, ketchup, cayenne pepper and salt. Cook 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool.

2. Set the pork in a 9 inch-by-13 inch baking dish. Brush all sides of the pork with half of the glaze.

3. Light grill to medium high. Grill the pork, turning and brushing with the remaining glaze until browned on all sides, about 15 minutes, or until cooked through (with an instant-read thermometer 150 degrees). Transfer the cooked pork to a cutting board and let rest 10 minutes.

4. While the pork is resting make the salsa: In a bowl, mix the cilantro, oil, vinegar, onion, chives, jalapenos and garlic. Season with salt. Transfer to a serving bowl.

To serve: Slice the pork into quarter- to half-inch slices.

Arrange on a serving platter. Pour any accumulated juices over the pork. Garnish cilantro sprigs and serve the salsa on the side.
