WAITING FOR THE WORLD TO CHANGE From Dr. Chamberlain’s Desktop

ecently, I had the opportunity to visit a physician's office Dr. Thomas Chamberlain for a general health check-up. As I entered the beautiful office, I expected to be greeted with a warm “Hello” or “Welcome.” Instead, I did hear, “Please fill out the form on this clipboard.” To this I responded, “Hello! How are you?”

After my greeting the receptionist reacted more positively to me. However, the visit didn't seem to get better. After waiting for 18 minutes in the lobby, I was finally called back to the exam room and waited yet another 14 minutes (yes, I was counting at this point).

By the time I was able to see the doctor, it was over 30 minutes past my scheduled appointment time. It really was an eyeopener that there are still many health practices out there that do not place customer service as a priority.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Sleep Apnea

has become one of the leading US health concerns that we face as we continue to treat an aging and oftentimes overweight population. Patients who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea can have symptoms that include a feeling of being tired, fatigued and sleepy during the daytime. Many people who develop sleep apnea start with snoring, which can then progress towards apnea, where they stop breathing. The benefit of treating sleep apnea is that it will reduce the complications associated with sleep apnea. These complications include: problems with your endocrine system [thyroid problems and diabetes], hypertension, congestive heart failure, cardiovascular disease including heart block and arrhythmias, an increased risk of stroke, mood disorders and of course, increased mortality. Chandler Chamber Introduces Two New Leads Groups comm. spotlight

When Steve Greenhalgh joined the Chandler Chamber of Commerce more than 10 years ago, he did so with the intent of strengthening his business, Arizona Pest Prevention.

What he discovered was a group of like-minded business owners with the chamber who worked hard at cultivating new business leads.

Greenhalgh recently joined the Thursday West Chandler leads group, one of two new groups tailored for Chandler Chamber of Commerce members.

“Leads groups create the best opportunity for building new relationships,” Greenhalgh says.

“It allows us to get to know folks we probably didn’t know prior to joining and as the groups grow, that same pattern continues.”

Commerce has many leads groups.

Ten years ago, Greenhalgh was one of the first several chamber members who helped found one of the original leads groups that meets Friday mornings. He has seen the track record of value of the leads groups and there are now many.

“This will bring our total up to seven different leads referral groups,” said Terri Kimble, CEO and president of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.

“The whole purpose of those groups is to help with economic and social development between our members and also to be able to help them to pass leads and hopefully generate money.”

Some leads groups meet in the morning, some meet midday and others meet in the evening. “The reason why we have so many different leads groups is to be able to

accommodate different people’s schedules,” notes Kimble.

“Everybody at each meeting has a ‘commercial’ they have to do or to just tell everybody in the group about themselves.” Each meeting also features tips on marketing or other suggestions designed to help individual businesses.

Kimble continues, “From within the group there will be a keynote speaker that will talk more about their business.” Group members learn about that business and how it may be of service to other business owners in the group and vice versa.

Special announcements are made and referrals are shared amongst group members.

The two new leads groups meet weekly. The South Chandler group meets at Bernard’s at Ocotillo Golf

Resort from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and the West Chandler group meets at Nabers Music, Bar and Eats from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays. Membership is open to Chandler Chamber of Commerce members and dues are $35 annually.

Any business wanting to join a leads group may have two free visits before deciding whether to join as an ongoing member. Membership in leads groups permits only different trades or professions so that no other competing business will be part of the group.

Bryce Perkins showed why he is one of the top recruits in the nation as he threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Wolves to a 22-7 win.

Running back Chase Lucas was also big in the win, running for 114 yards, while the Wolves’ senior receivers— Justin Jan and N’Keal Narry—chipped in three touchdowns.

Defensively the Wolves smothered the potent Valor Christian attack holding them to only 228 yards of offense and keeping them out of the endzone until the fourth quarter.

Game four of the season saw a potential Division I State Championship preview against defending state champions, the Mountain Pointe Pride.

The Wolves’ offense was firing on all cylinders, but their defense was unable to stop the powerful Pride rushing attack as the Wolves fell 45-42.

Perkins threw for 407 yards and six touchdowns while adding 83 rushing yards and a touchdown as well. Jan was Perkins’ main target, catching 10 passes for 160 yards and four touchdowns. Taylor and Lucas each caught a touchdown pass. The win catapulted the team back into the No. 1 ranking in the state.

Coming off their best game of the season, the Wolves continued to dominate, beating visiting Gilbert High School 56-14.

Perkins threw three touchdowns in the first half, before Moran came in and tossed another. The Wolves climbed out to a 49-0 halftime lead, before the second and third stringers took over.

The Wolves’ defense was, again dominant intercepting two passes, one returned for a touchdown by Kalif Roberts, as the Wolves made quick work of the visiting Tigers.

The Wolves look primed to go into the playoffs with the top ranking in Division I, and if they continue to play liked they have lately, you have to wonder if anyone can stop them. ... continues on page 10

Lucas pitched in 106 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground, but it was no match for the Pride, who ran for an astonishing 543 yards on the ground to pull out a win.

There was no hangover for the Wolves after their first and only loss of the season, as they ran wild on visiting Cesar Chavez 49-6.

Junior back up quarterback Mason Moran threw for 76 yards and a touchdown as the Wolves were able to get in most of their back ups early in the game.

Senior Frankie Icedo scored his first touchdown of the season and Reed-Campos scored two rushing touchdowns as the Wolves used nine different ball carriers to gain their 210 rushing yards in the game.

Junior Anthony Clay and sophomore Kolby Taylor each caught touchdown passes as well.

In maybe the most shocking final score of the season the Wolves throttled rival Hamilton 56-24, handing Hamilton its first loss at home in more than a decade.

Zach Wade threw two touchdown passes, both to senior receiver George Wolter, and Antonio Campanella rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown as the Sentinels’ offense was held to their lowest point total of the season.

The Sentinels’ defense made life hard for Snowflake, holding it to under four yards per carry on the game.

Game four saw Seton get back to its dominant ways with a 55-0 blowout of Cortez High School.

Wade threw for two touchdowns, Campanella ran for 168 yards and three touchdowns on only six carries and the Sentinels’ defense overwhelmed the Cortez offense.

Manny Estrella and Brandon Garcia each had an interception and Patrick Larsen recovered a fumble caused by senior Zach Fulmer for the Sentinels.

The Sentinels stayed on track in week five with another blowout win over Coronado 61-0. Wade threw four touchdowns and Campanella scored four total touchdowns while keeping his streak of 100-yard rushing games alive. Junior running back Matt Bresnahan also ran for more than 100 yards and two scores on the evening.

Fulmer was big again for the Sentinels’ defense, intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown.

Defensive back Dominic Johnson also intercepted a Coronado pass as the Sentinels pitched its second consecutive shutout.

In its third home game, Seton gave the crowd a show, rolling its way to a 48-7 win over Florence High School.

Wade threw four more touchdown passes and also ran for a touchdown, while Campanella continued to run over, around and through the competition, racking up 145 more yards on the ground and another touchdown.

Game seven pitted the Sentinels against Division IV No. 2 team, the Coolidge High School Bears. In the first half, Seton was only able to muster seven points. But the offense fireworks went off for the Sentinels in the second half when senior quarterback Wade finished the evening with a career high 312 passing yards. Wide receiver Brandon Garcia scored two touchdowns.

The Sentinels defense harassed the Bears’ offense all evening, pitching their third shutout on the season, 440, and maybe their most impressive to date.

In game three, the Mustangs beat the Kellis High School Cougars 45-0. The Mustangs were led by a devastating rushing attack, as they rushed 50 times for 319 yards and five touchdowns.

Senior Erik Heller scored three of the Mustangs’ touchdowns, while the defense smothered the Cougars’ offense all evening, giving up only 100 yards.

Game four of the season was another impressive showing by the Mustangs, as they beat host Maryvale High School 63-7.

The Mustangs threw only eight passes on the evening, with junior Corey Evans tossing his first touchdown of the season. Kyle Brost was the recipient, as the Mustangs’ offense again controlled the game’s pace.

For the second time this season, the Mustangs ran for five touchdowns— two by Heller, and one each for Evans, junior Carlito Matus and senior Collin Erickson.

Defensively, the Mustangs held Maryvale to 101 yards of offense,

including -12 rushing yards and scored three defensive touchdowns.

The Mustangs continued their winning ways with a big 38-21 win over Gilbert High School. Heller ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns, while Erickson chalked up 83 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs ran for 254 yards as a team.

Evans passed for his second touchdown of the season, a 38yard pass to Brost, and the Mustangs’ defense did just enough to hold down the Gilbert offense.

To get to 5-2 after an ugly 0-2 start, a little luck has to be involved, and the Mustangs got just that in their 27-14 win over the Corona del Sol Aztecs.

For the first time in their five-game winning streak, the Mustangs’ offense struggled, rushing for only 137 yards and passing for only 20.

They did get two rushing touchdowns, one from Evans and another from junior Jerry Santana, but it was the Mustangs’ defense who made the biggest plays. Isaiah Douglas, the Mustangs’ senior linebacker, recovered and returned two fumbles for touchdowns, giving the Mustangs the win, and pushing them closer to a playoff berth.

Mesquite High School Wildcats 500 S. McQueen Rd., Gilbert www.gilbertschools.net/domain/215 Head coach: Jim Jones 2014 record: 3-4 (Listed at 4-3 because of Williams Field forfeit) After a rough 0-2 start, the Mesquite Wildcats have gotten a little help.

Williams Field High School had to forfeit their first four games of the season, including one with Mesquite.

In subsequent games, the team picked up in the running game that Coach Jim Jones loves so much. In game three, Mesquite beat Marana Mountain View 35-21 behind a brilliant rushing performance from running back Michael Premraj who ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Jake Suddreth threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns as well, one to junior J’Rell Williams and one to junior Matt Caputo.

Defensively the Wildcats struggled to stop passing attack of Mountain View, as they threw for 389 yards, but shut down the run game and caused three turnovers to win the game.

Game four of the season Mesquite traveled to Ironwood and came out on top 31-14 for its second win of the season. Premraj had another big game, rushing for 122 yards and a touchdown, while Suddreth threw for 144 yards and two touchdowns, another to Williams and one to Colten Gonzales. The Wildcats’ defense held Ironwood to 132 yards of total offense in the win.

Things were a little strange in game five of the season, as the Wildcats only rushed for 80 yards and threw for 102 yards. However, their 182 yards of offense somehow produced 34 points and a 34-20 win over the Corona Del Sol Aztecs.

Mesquite’s defense kept Corona’s offense to 183 total yards in the game.

Making the big plays on offense for the Wildcats was wide receiver A’Drell Williams, who caught two passes, each one for a touchdown from backup junior quarterback Austin Brice.

Mesquite had a rough go of it, losing to Westwood 33-0.

The Wildcats were held to only 81 yards rushing and, worse, were held to 32 yards passing, as they were shut out for the first time this season.

Defensively the Wildcats struggled to stop a dangerous Westwood attack, giving up 418 yards.

Week seven was a heartbreaker for Mesquite. Although new quarterback, sophomore Preston Smith, played well in his first game at the position, the team fell short in a 41-35 loss to Cactus High School.

The Wildcats have to be happy with the way Smith played against one of the state’s best teams, and they’ll need him to mature quickly if they want to get back to the playoffs.

Prior to 1961, the closest hospital to Chandler was Mesa’s Southside Hospital.

In the late 1950s, Chandler residents successfully campaigned to establish the state’s first hospital district, a tax district that would support a rural hospital. The campaign resulted in the construction of Chandler’s first hospital, a 42-bed facility on the southwest corner of McQueen Road and Chandler Boulevard. As Chandler grew, the small hospital struggled to serve the growing population. In 1984, Chandler Regional Hospital opened at its current location on the southeast corner of Frye and Dobson roads. The hospital has since undergone two major expansions, the most recent of which was completed in August.

The $125-million expansion added nearly 100 beds to the hospital, expanded several departments and gave Chandler Regional Medical Center, as it’s now called, the only Level I trauma center operating in the Southeast Valley.

A free, family-friendly festival featuring music, trivia games and fireworks is expected to attract more than 4,000 people to Tumbleweed Park from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The four-hour Fall Rhythm Fest, presented by SRP, is celebrating its 28th year. This year’s featured acts include Adrenaline, who will take the stage at 5:45 p.m., and Colton Avery, who will play acoustic music beginning at 8 p.m.

In between the two acts at the festival, adults can play trivia games, while kids can limbo. City of Chandler Recreation Coordinator of Special Events Stephanie Feldaverd said a DJ will play music during the intermission, and kid’s interactive games presented by Extreme Events will be available.

“We encourage everyone to bring a blanket or a lawn chair,” she said. “If they want to bring their own food,

Spooktacular Returns for 33rd Year

The City of Chandler is offering a safe alternative to trick-or-treating with the 33rd annual Halloween Spooktacular from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at the Downtown Library Plaza, 125 E. Commonwealth Ave. More than 1,200 people will converge on the plaza, which will also host a costume contest, according to City of Chandler Recreation Coordinator for Special Events Stephanie Feldaverd.

The contest will be split into different age categories—0 to 4 years old, 5 to 7 years old, 8 to 10 years old and 11 and older. There is also a category for the best overall family costumes.

“Last year we had a group come out as ‘Hook,’” she said of the different characters from the movie “Hook.”

A first- and second-place prize will be given to the best boy and girl costumes for 0 to 4 years old; best super hero, cartoon character, best princess and scariest costumes in age groups 5 to 7 and 8 to 10. The best overall costume will be given for

participants 11 years old and older.

The evening will be filled with different events, which are free or affordable. For haunted house fans, there will be an attraction organized and designed by Teens Actively Serving Chandler. Five City departments will provide trunk-ortreat for the youngsters. A souvenir photo opportunity and frame to capture this year’s memories will be offered for $3. Face painting will be $1. Feldaverd said the money raised will go toward the Mayor’s Youth Commission.

A pumpkin patch with 250 pumpkins will be part of this year’s Halloween Spooktacular, with families allowed one pumpkin. Kids will have the opportunity to paint their pumpkins and leave them to dry before heading home.

An array of eight carnival games will fill the plaza, as well as an assortment of other interactive games and arts and crafts.

The Park Promenade resident lives with his wife, Cherie, of almost 25 years. He has two children, Zach, 22, and Katie, 19. “My family is a huge part of my life,” Wilkinson said.

Scouting Benefits Kids in Plethora of Ways

By Alison Stanton Stephanie Jarnagan joined the Girl Scouts when she was a third grader growing up in Chandler. She stayed with the organization through high school, where she won a Gold Award for producing a newsletter for high school and junior high students that focused on service project opportunities.

Jarnagan loved her experience with scouting so much, she is now leader of Girl Scout Troop 951 in Chandler, as well as a service team member. Her daughter, 10-year-old Kayden, began scouting in kindergarten as a Daisy Girl Scout and is now in her mom’s troop.

“I can’t speak highly enough about my experience as a Girl Scout and it’s the prime reason I am so passionate about being an active leader now,” Jarnagan said.

Although boys and girls can typically join the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts at any time of the year, many troops are actively recruiting right now. Schools often post signs about upcoming troop meetings that parents can attend with their kids to learn more about the program.

To get involved in Girl Scouting, Jarnagan said, parents can also enroll their daughters through the local council website, www.girlscoutsaz.org.

A Girl Scout membership costs $15 a year, but dues can vary from troop to troop, depending on how active they are.

Jarnagan said she also feels that being involved in scouting can help kids build friendships that will last a lifetime.

“These girls will go into the tough junior high and high school grades with a network of support from their fellow troop members, which will hopefully enable them to stand up to peer pressure, bullying and other difficult situations.”

And, just like she got to take part in a variety of memorable experiences, Jarnagan said she loves the opportunities that scouting provides.

“Last year, my fourth-grade junior troop got to work with engineering students at ASU to build wagons used in our cookie sale,” Jarnagan said.

“We also went to Posh Restaurant in Scottsdale where the chef and restaurateur Josh Hebert taught the girls how to make Vietnamese bahn mi sandwiches. And we completed a service project at Friends for Life Animal Shelter in Gilbert installing

new flooring and using part of our cookie proceeds to cover the cost of the project.”

Theresa Motes said she has had the pleasure of watching several of her children participate in scouting. In addition to her 10-year-old daughter, Daisy, who is also in Troop 951, three of her sons have participated in the Boy Scouts of America.

Both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have helped the Chandler mom’s children learn about important character traits and make new friends, she said.

“They have been able to recognize through Scouts that as individuals we are responsible for taking care of our community,” she said.

Motes said Daisy, who began as a Daisy Girl Scout in kindergarten, loves the way she and her friends have been able to make a positive impact on the community.

“Daisy has blossomed into a confident young lady and has been enriched by the powerful Girl Scout promise that she holds in her heart,” Motes said.

Pumpkin Cookies Two Ways Chocolate chip cookies may be America’s favorite treat for most of the year, but they’re going to have to move over this month—or at least share the stage—with the real star in November, the pumpkin cookie. Ultra moist, simple to make and so wonderful to give as gifts, the pumpkin cookie is the treat, at least in my family, that everyone looks forward to in the fall.

I’ve shared with you my two favorite recipes. The first one makes whipping up a batch of these pumpkin delights

super easy because a box of yellow cake mix eliminates a few extra steps.

The second recipe adds the beloved chocolate bits into a rich pumpkin batter.

The secret to the moistest cookies ever is to let the cookies cool a bit, and then immediately put them in an airtight container. Enjoy a beautiful platter of pumpkin cookies or give them as scrumptious gifts from your kitchen! Let the holiday season officially begin!

Drop mixture onto baking sheet a heaping teaspoonful at a time. For larger cookies, drop more dough.

Bake for 10-12 minutes. Once out of the oven, while cookies are still warm, brush glaze over top. Store in airtight container.

Big-City Fashion at a Boutique Near You It’s easy to find somewhere to shop in the Valley—but knowing how to shop can be a challenge, especially for busy women. Denise Huddleston, owner of Pieces of 8 Boutique in south Tempe, helps women find their unique style and shop to fit it.

Pieces of 8 Boutique is located at 9030 S. McClintock Dr., Suite 102, Tempe.

However, Huddleston is on a mission to bring style to women—figuratively and literally.

“I try to bring the clothes to the woman versus the woman to the clothes—I want to bring it to you,” she said.

The boutique provides personal styling and shopping, small fashion shows, private parties, women’s expos and more in addition to maintaining shopping hours.

Huddleston said she’s always loved fashion.

“Chanel is my favorite designer ever since I was a little kid,” Huddleston said. “I’ve always loved fashion. This is the next chapter in my life, and I’m seeing where it will take me.”

She hasn’t always been a stylist. After studying business and graduating from ASU, Huddleston started a trucking company with her husband, which they ran for 27 years. A couple years ago the couple sold the business, and she decided to return to a lifelong passion.

“It’s pretty different,” Huddleston said of trucking. “But the logistics helped—getting things here and there.”

An affinity for staying on the move also stayed with Huddleston. Seeing styles from cities like her original hometown of Chicago, as well as New York and Los Angeles, has inspired her own eye for design and style.

If a client shops with Huddleston, styling services are free, Huddleston said. If they choose to shop elsewhere, she still offers a consult for $50 to $75 an hour.

She usually travels to the client, takes their measurements and offers advice like which colors and styles would be most flattering for their individual body type and the look they would like to achieve.

She loves to introduce the uninitiated to the world of fashion.

“People are afraid of it; they think you have to be a movie star or rich to have a personal stylist, and that’s not necessarily true,” she said.

“Really, any woman—a mother looking to get back into her style, a young adult entering the professional world—anyone looking for something a little trendy but still conservative, or just a little fun...I can bring fashion to you,” Huddleston said.

Fostering executive functions in children

Part 3 of Series:

“Pencils, Parents, Precepts and Practicalities.”

H O W PA R E N T S C A N N U R T U R E H I G H - L E V E L L E A R N I N G Children are born with great capacities to learn. However, we are also finding out that parents and teachers can play a large role in nurturing the skills necessary to acquire knowledge, think critically, analyze and manipulate information.

These high-level skills are Linda McFadyen identified by educators and researchers as “executive functions.” Executive functioning skills are those used to execute everyday tasks such as organizing, prioritizing, planning, goal setting, time management, remembering, shifting, flexible problem solving and self-monitoring and self-checking. The part of our brains that manages these executive function skills essentially acts much like an “air traffic controller,” managing incoming information and making sure that tasks are successfully accomplished. It takes several different executive skills to perform a single task.

For example, getting dressed for school involves planning ahead for the weather, logically beginning the task in a timely manner, managing emotions about wanting (or not wanting) to wear a certain outfit, and maintaining sufficient attention to complete the task. Executive functions help children complete chores and homework, save money for a desired toy, follow rules, keep track of belongings, do mathematical problems in their heads, and think logically, among many other important things.

By understanding the crucial value of executive functioning, parents can encourage their children to become adept at them in many different ways. A productive year at school is linked to a productive year at home. So here are some tips that will help you instill some of these high levels skills within your own children: • Have your children keep their bedrooms and activity areas neat and clean. This takes organization. Parents can guide their children how best to accomplish this by breaking it down into smaller tasks and by establishing regular schedules for this activity. You should follow through to make certain this is done to completion. Keep the experience positive not punitive: “You are welcome to do your favorite activity when this is done.” “Please pick up the toys you want to keep.” (Anything left behind must be collected and stored out of sight. Your child can earn them back doing other chores.)

• Set up a nightly routine for your child to pack their own backpack and lay out clothes for school the next day. Put the assembled backpack next to the door from

which your child will leave.

• Talk to your child about what they need to do to be on time for school in the morning. Make a list of what they have to accomplish then talk about the amount of time they need to complete these tasks and still be on time. By working backward your child can then determine what time they need to get up in the morning—a time they have decided.

• Establish a routine for leaving for school in the morning. Teach your child how to make a checklist for items to bring to school in the morning: lunch bag, backpack, signed papers to go to the teacher, jacket, shoes for P.E., etc.

• Expect children to perform simple chores such as bed making, setting the table for meals, folding dishtowels, or rinsing dishes. Help them understand that they have an important part in keeping the family running smoothly.

• Homework can provide opportunities to instill executive functions, as well. For young children, homework should be completed in a designated area that is visible to you. Keep the space free of clutter and stock it with the basics—paper, pencil, ruler and protractor, etc. Eliminate all distracting audio-visuals like radio, TV, phones and iPads.

You can inspire your child through your own example by using homework time to quietly fold laundry, pay bills, prepare dinner or read a book or newspaper.

• Help your child form a check list, establish a calendar of due dates, write to-do lists, or utilize a day planner.

Help them think about scheduling “have tos” first and then filling in “want tos.”

• For older students, discuss how they plan to manage their time throughout the week. This includes balancing study time with outside activities. Let them establish a written schedule that to which they can adhere.

For many students, these skills develop by trial and error over time, but parents can help their children master proficiency in these executive functions and thus increase their skills to manage life’s tasks. Brains mature at individual rates—even among children of the same age or grade.

Working with each child on appropriate skill development allows for increasing success and the ultimate development of a skilled “air traffic controller.”
