As several school districts sue the state over cuts to education funds, Scottsdale Unified School District remains one of the most well-funded districts in Arizona. But SUSD receives just a fraction of its budget from the state, with the bulk of funds coming from property taxes. And there’s another source of financial stability for SUSD: its surrounding community.

Scottsdale zip codes among most prosperous in Arizona

By Wayne Schutsky Scottsdale is rife with prosperity, according to a recent economic analysis of zip codes across the country.

The Economic Innovation Group, a bipartisan public policy organization, recently released the 2017 Distressed Communities Index, which analyzes a range of economic factors in communities across the country and ranks zip codes and cities using a cumulative distress score.

Scottsdale joined fellow Arizona municipalities Chandler and Gilbert and locales like San Francisco and Seattle on the report’s list of the most prosperous large cities in the country.

Arizona and California were the only states with three municipalities listed in the top 10 on the most prosperous cities ranking.

Scottsdale ranked 10th on the list with a cumulative distress score of 25.2 and 60.9 percent of residents living in prosperous zip codes.

“The big dividing line at the city level tends to be an old and new question,” said John Lettieri, EIG cofounder and senior director for policy and strategy. “The places that are newer and faster-growing tend to be more prosperous… the older, slowergrowing cities tend to be at the lower end of the prosperous spectrum.”

The factors the group took into account include poverty rate, median income ratio, percentage of the population over 25 without a high school diploma, and percentage of adults between 25 and 64 not working.

It also looks at community-based factors like housing vacancy rate and the percent change in the number of jobs and businesses in the community between 2011 and 2015.

EIG then classifies communities as prosperous, comfortable, mid-tier, atrisk or distressed based on the distress score.

are looking at whether) places are seeing business growth or business decline,” Lettieri said. “At the center of this question is, do you have growth or decline in your stock of businesses?”

Unsurprisingly, Scottsdale included some of the most prosperous zip codes in Arizona due to low housing vacancy rates and median incomes generally well above the state median.

The city has six zip codes that fall under the prosperous designation and three more classified as comfortable. One zip code is classified as distressed.

EIG defines prosperous zip codes as those with a distress score of 20 or below, which ranks in the top fifth of all zip codes included in the study.

Distressed communities fall in the bottom fifth of all zip codes in the study.

Zip codes 85250 and 85258 rank in the top five most prosperous zip codes in Scottsdale with distress scores of 7.4 and 17, respectively.

Both zip codes benefit from a high percentage of adults with a high school diploma, low poverty rates and high median incomes.

However, some measurables are concerning in the zip codes. Between 2011 and 2015, employment shrank by 2.7 percent in 85258 and the number of businesses there only increased by 6.6 percent.

The numbers in 85250 are a little better, with employment growing 17.1 percent and businesses increasing by 7.7 percent during that time.

Similarly, 85259 has a low poverty rate, high incomes and an educated work force but suffers employment growth issues. The zip code saw employment shrink by 76 percent between 2011 and 2015.

A city’s prosperity can be affected by a range of other factors as well, including how accessible the community is to lower- and middleincome families.

“A place can appear prosperous because it is not accessible to loweror middle-income people,” Lettieri said. “Part of this is (showing) how you got there and how you can allow access to lower and middle income people – how you can connect places and people so you are sharing that prosperity.”

While the majority of the zip codes in Scottsdale are considered prosperous or comfortable, the city still has small pockets of distress.

The 85256 zip code, which is relatively small with under 5,000 residents, has a 33.6 percent poverty rate, which is well above the state’s poverty rate of 17.4 percent. The zip code also has high rates of primeage adults not working and a median income below the state’s median income.

One way cities can promote the growth of prosperous communities is by encouraging home-grown businesses that “have skin in the game,” EIG co-founder and Executive Director Steve Glickman said.

“You have to be an attractive location for entrepreneurship in general,” Glickman said.

Prosperous and distressed communities in the same region also should work together to develop strategies to improve overall regional prosperity, Lettieri said.

He added that distressed communities need to “connect their fate with the more prosperous areas, (because) the most poisonous thing for a distressed area is being disconnected.”

A gift that keeps giving: McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park One of Scottsdale’s most beloved parks began forming in 1967 with a 100-acre gift of land from Anne and Fowler McCormick, heirs of the International Harvester dynasty. The McCormicks, who raised Arabian horses on their Scottsdale ranch, donated the land to the City of Scottsdale for a park that would enhance quality of life in Scottsdale for future generations.

Guy Stillman, Anne McCormick’s son, helped bring the proposed park to fruition, and his passion for trains gave shape to the project.

The McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, as it was eventually named, opened with a public celebration in 1975. The centerpiece of the park

is a 5/12 scale model of a Colorado narrow-gauge railroad that Stillman had earlier built for his children on his own Scottsdale ranch. Volunteers finished moving the engines and milelong track of Stillman’s Paradise and Pacific Railroad, as it became known, in 1974. Since its grand opening in 1975, the park has become a favorite and receives about 1 million visitors annually. During the holiday season, the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is decked out in lights for its annual Holiday Lights extravaganza. The special celebration during the “season of giving” makes sense for McCormickStillman, since the park and many of its amenities began as gifts.

The IIP identifies water and wastewater infrastructure improvements needed to accommodate new growth in the city. The document is one factor used to determine the need to modify development impact fees. The public hearing is the first step in that fee modification process.

Following the hearing, city officials will present the plan to the City Council on March 6 for adoption. “We don’t have the (modified fee rates) yet,” Kirkin said. “These reports will go through the public hearing process and then to council. If they are approved by council, we will determine the (new fee rates).”

The public hearing will take place at a City Council meeting at 5 p.m. at 3939 N. Drinkwater Boulevard.

Residents can access copies of the IIP and LUA on the city’s website at scottsdaleaz.gov/water/rates-fees or at the Administrative Offices of the Water Resources Department at 9379 E. San Salvador Drive.

The City of Scottsdale will hold a public hearing in January to discuss changes that could impact future development impact fees in the city.

Impact fees are a one-time charge levied on new development, including commercial and residential properties. The funds collected through impact fees pay for water and wastewater infrastructure upgrades. “(Impact fees) pay for growth,” Scottsdale Enterprise and Finance Director Gina Kirkin said.

For most residential properties, the fees are due before the issuance of the first building permit. For commercial, industrial or multi-family development, fees are due when the final site plan is approved.

The amount of the fee is based on the size of the water meter at the property, Kirkin said.

Currently, combined water and wastewater impact fees range from $5,407 for properties with a 5/8-inch, 3/4-inch or 1-inch meter to $432,560 for properties with an 8-inch compound meter.

School funding has been a contentious issue nationwide, but perhaps especially so in Arizona, where several school districts sued the state (and won) in 1994, successfully arguing that using taxpayer-funded bonds to cover the costs of school maintenance put schools in low-income areas at a disadvantage. The settlement agreement included between $100 million and $200

million per year for building maintenance and about $200 million annually to schools for soft capital. Former Governor Jan Brewer began cutting those funds in 2009, citing the Great Recession. Cuts continued under both Brewer and current Governor Doug Ducey. School districts say they are currently getting about 15 percent of what was promised to them each year in what’s called District Additional Assistance.

In May, the Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest filed a lawsuit on behalf of a plaintiff group that includes the Arizona School Boards Association, Arizona Education Association, Elfrida Elementary School District, Chino Valley Unified School District, Crane Elementary School District and Glendale Elementary School District, “challenging the state’s failure to adequately find public schools,” according

to an ACLPI press release. The trial is expected to commence in spring 2018.

The national Center for Student Achievement ranked Arizona 49th in the U.S. in education funding this year.

But Scottsdale Unified School District is one of the larger and highest-performing school districts in the state.

There are 29 schools in the district (plus Scottsdale Online Learning) with approximately 2,300 students, and the district employs roughly 1,300 teachers. Research engine StartClass reports federal funding per student is higher than average in SUSD, with the district receiving $9,709 per student (compared to the average federal funding for all districts in Arizona of $8,703 per student). Niche, an education data firm, ranks SUSD in the top 10 percent of “Safest School Districts in America.”

A big part of SUSD’s success comes from community support, according to Helm. “In a time when public schools have to constantly fight for funding, the generosity of our community has become a critical component of keeping our schools performing at high levels. Cash gifts help fund everything from team uniforms and musical instruments to classroom aide salaries and library books,” Helm said. “Such gifts come from parent organizations, local businesses, churches and generous individuals.

Musical Instrument Museum provides sonic thrills from around the world Story and photos by Crystal Lewis Brown Usually, a group of people walking around a museum wearing headphones – completely oblivious to those around them – is a bad thing. But at the Musical Instrument Museum, headphones are an integral part of the experience.

I expected the museum to have a host of instruments (hence the name) but was completely unprepared for just how much the 200,000-squarefoot space had to offer.

My family members and I were each given a headset resembling an old-school Walkman radio that would serve as audio guide throughout our visit. For those wanting something a bit more formal, guided tours are also available. We handed the museum map to our 8-year-old and let him guide the way.

I’ve had headset tours before, but I wasn’t expecting what we got at the MIM. As we neared certain exhibits, the instruments on display started

Saying the museum is big is an understatement. It’s home to about 16,000 instruments from around the world. In addition to special exhibits, there are several other galleries, including the Mechanical Music, Experience and Artist galleries.

There’s also the Conservation Lab and a Family Center with chairs and toys, for when your little ones need a break (more on that later). It’s also split into five geographic regions: Africa and the Middle East, Asia and Oceana, Jordan, 5, plays an instrument during a recent visit to the Musical Europe, Latin Instrument Museum.

We started our self-guided tour downstairs and our kiddos were immediately entranced. Both of our children are budding musicians – not surprising given that their parents are a former pianist and a singer/ former celloist. The older one plays the viola and the 5-year-old requested and received a guitar for his birthday.

So it was no surprise they took to the museum like a fish to water. The younger one watched and listened to each performance in the Artist Gallery, which included instruments, concert footage, performance outfits and more. He was particularly entranced by the guitar performances, and was often several exhibits behind the rest of the family. Performances were displayed on a television screen with numbers on a placard so that we could easily follow along to performance

names and information. The quote for that gallery was “One more song,” as he begged to listen to song after song.

All of us were entranced by what I thought was at first a woman making music by simply waving her hands. In fact, in a way, she kind of was doing that. She was playing a theremin, an electronic instrument controlled by an antenna without the player never actually touching it. We then headed to the Mechanical Music Gallery, where we witnessed some of the coolest – and creepiest – mechanical instruments (instruments that “play themselves”), including player pianos and animated musical dolls.

Our next stop was one the children enjoyed the most: The Experience Gallery. The Experience Gallery was filled with playable versions of many of the instruments found throughout the museum. We tried our hand at playing the theremin, strummed guitars, banged a gong and played many more instruments from around the world whose names I don’t know.

We then headed upstairs to explore each of the Geographic Galleries. Having spent so much time downstairs, and dawdling through Africa and the Middle East, our kindergartner finally got tired somewhere in the East Asia exhibit.

While he had a brief “up” moment as we listened to an orchestra simulation (it got extra points from the kids since a child narrated it), it was clear he was spent.

In hindsight, those visiting with younger children might be better off touring upstairs at the start of the trip, then taking a break for lunch at the cafe. That way, they can end the trip on the bottom floor with them playing in the Experience Gallery. As for us, we were at least well-suited for a good nap by the time we reached home.

Scottsdale Fire Department kicked off its annual toy drive on December 2 in the parking lot of the Target store at Frank Lloyd Wright and the Loop 101. Dozens of families came out to donate toys, climb aboard the fire truck and mingle with firefighters.

Bitters brings clever cocktails and inspired food to SkySong “OK, here’s your Bitter Ex. We all have one.”

Erika Rode, owner of the new cocktail bar Bitters in SkySong, points to a burnt-orange-colored cocktail on the bar. The drink – made with habanero vodka, falernum, lime and mango – is one of the most popular tipples at Bitters, and frankly, it’s a lot sweeter than any of my exes. Juicy and fruity, The Bitter Ex is dangerously drinkable. If breakfast booze is a thing, this cocktail is king. It would pair perfectly with everything from waffles to poached eggs and bacon.

The crafty and clever cocktail is one of 17 on Bitters’ specialty cocktail menu. Each one has the word “Bitter” in its name and is accompanied by a pithy quote. Some of the cocktails put a creative spin on traditional favorites – for example, the Bitter, Old and Fashionable, which builds a comforting spice palate on the old bourbonand-orange base with the addition of hazelnut and chocolate bitters. through panoramic windows. There’s also a large, dog-friendly patio with an up-close view of the colossal aluminum SkySong sculpture by local artist Pam Castano. Rode says, “The building came with a dirt floor,” and she did a lot of the renovations herself, including all the flooring and the woodwork around the bar. Servers at Bitters all wear polka-dotted shirts and bow ties. The whole place feels fresh and fun, right down to the Top 40 and pop music gently pulsing danceable beats from the speakers.

In addition to Bitters’ cocktails, there’s also a coterie of craft beers (including 12 on tap) and fine wines.

Happy hour runs from 3 to 6 p.m.

Tuesday through Friday, and specials vary by day: Tuesdays are “Tequila Tuesdays,” with $7 margaritas and tequila sunrises; hump day is “Wine Wednesdays” with $10 off bottled wine selections; “Thirsty Thursdays” are sated by $5 draft beers; and “Feature Fridays” include a bartender cocktail for $7. Happy hour food specials include $5 fried pickles, $7 pork nachos and $9 flatbread boards.

Speaking of the food, the menu is a result of Rode’s R&D all over the U.S. Before opening Bitters, she was an executive for Total Wine & More and traveled the states frequently to help open new locations. During a visit to Portland, Oregon, she stopped at a place that had a menu of artisanal

popcorn. That inspired her to create the three haute, popped-to-order popcorn bowls on the Bitters menu – Arizona (tajin, cilantro lime salt, queso fresco); Truffled (truffle butter, truffle zest, truffle oil); and the most popular, the Honey Hot (curry dust, honey, pomegranate seeds, goat cheese drizzle). The latter is more honey than hot, but super tasty with a slight curry afterburn.

The menu features a “house slider,” which is different every day. On my visit, the house slider was an openface hamburger slider gilded with rich and sharp white cheddar cheese and topped with a tangle of perfectly light and crunchy onions.

Fish fans will love the farro risotto and salmon, which features a perfectly grilled slab of salmon on a bed of risotto bathed in Brie, Parmesan, herbs and tomatoes.

Dessert options are all decadent, from a Peanut Butter Tower of peanut butter and chocolate mini-bombs with caramel drizzle to a stout milkshake, but we were won over by the

“Voilà!,” so the French say with joie de vivre: “Here it is!” So it is, almost like magic.

And so that may be what Ségolène Gros will say to guests, serving this magical food prepared by her husband, Chef Jean-Christophe, at their Voilà French Bistro in Scottsdale Ranch.

The “i” of their Voilà logo is an upright fork, so come ready to enjoy petit déjeuner, lunch, brunch and dinner; appetizers such as moules au beurre d’escargots (mussels with parsley butter and garlic); French onion soup; entrées such as two of chef’s signature dishes, féuillete de noix de Saint Jacques (scallops in puff pastry) and foie gras de canard aux pommes (hot duck foie gras with caramelized apples) and desserts including three different soufflés – raspberry, chocolate and Grand Marnier.

Their corner café immediately suggests unpretentiousness, quiet authenticity and charm: popular French music, a small outdoor patio and welcoming interior centered by a copy of Renoir’s 1881 Impressionist masterpiece, Luncheon of the Boating Party, and a bigsmile greeting of “Bonjour” by Ségolène.

Stay a while, relax, enjoy.

The couple purchased the existing Voilà in October 2015. The previous owners opened the restaurant three years earlier in the lake community just south of Shea Boulevard.

They had just moved to Scottsdale from France, where both were born, she in the north and he in the small northeast town of Neufchâteau, population approximately 7,300, at the confluence of the Meuse and Mouzon rivers in the Vosges Mountains area, a three-hour drive from Paris.

“I learned to cook watching my mother, so when I was about 15, she arranged a job for me at a local restaurant,” he said, through Ségolène, who translated. Lifedirecting, the job was at the Michelinstarred Relais Châteaux Les Bas Rupts in the ski resort town of Gérardmer.

His mentor there, 30 years ago, was Chef Michel Philippe. “He welcomed me in the kitchens and taught me everything when I was 16 years old. I was three weeks a month in his company and one week at culinary school in town. Away from my family, this family restaurant became like a second home for me.”

He learned well. The chef went on to own three hotel restaurants in the area and became well known throughout eastern France for his cuisine. The couple met in 1998 in one of these hotels in Neufchâteau.

“He was in the kitchen and worked with the wines and I was on the floor serving or hosting in the lobby,” Ségolène said. “We worked together for two years – nothing – and then we fell in love.”

So, romantic nuptials in Paris, Provence or Cannes?

Seven years ago, they wed in Las Vegas. “It was so romantic for us,” she recalled.

They pour passion into their food, as well.

“Ours are traditional French dishes with a modern elegance but still very flavorful and normal-size portions,” chef said, referring to their generous servings, rather than the gastronomically pleasing but minimalist portions elsewhere. “This is not la nouvelle cuisine but ‘la cuisine traditionelle moderne’ with modern dishes,” he added.

“I would say that my cuisine has a Provençal tendency, but I also offer dishes from all French regions in my dinner specials,” he said.

Thus, you’ll find escargots de Bourgogne (snails in a burgundy wine broth), moules Provencales (mussels, garlic, celery, white wine and tomatoes), filet de boeuf sauce béarnaise (filet mignon in béarnaise sauce), and traditional poulet Basquaise (chicken and white wine in the Basque style).

Everything but the bread and ice cream are housemade, including pastries, sauces, pâtés and quiches.

A recent visit flavorfully demonstrated these many influences. Ségolène began with a French demi baguette, served with an enticing aioli suitable for dipping and

thick enough to spread with a knife. This chef flavorfully crafts with eggs, cream, lemon and garlic.

As an appetizer, she suggested an assiette campagnard, essentially a dish of similar items in a country style, aligning with the chef’s background and experience. This included a country duck pate, in sliced style, and pork rillettes, chopped and served as a thick spread in an open tureen.

Chef and Ségolène perfectly paired this starter with a medium-bodied, fruitforward Bordeaux Graves blend from the Pessac-Leognan District, produced

A seafood bouillabaisse from Voila’s new menu, which debuted during the holidays, was the entrée. Marseilleinfluenced, the magnificent dish includes monkfish, Scottish salmon, deep-sea scallops, branzino, shrimp, mussels and red snapper. Chef adds a thick garlic-rich rouille sauce, tomatoes, celeries, fennel, white wine and spices, and potatoes, which he first cooks then quickly bakes in a pan.

Paired with this was a spectacular Gerard Fiou Sancerre Blanc 2015, young, crisp and fruity to complement the ocean tastes and textures.

“Our guests love our bouillabaisse,” Ségolène said. Justifiably so.

She finished with a house-made chocolate tarte, topped with a dollop of vanilla ice cream and finished with a piped chocolate fern design on the plate.

“Bonne journée et à bientôt!” Ségolène may say on guests’ departure: “Have a great day and until the next time.”

Christmas Shortbread Cookies

Christmas Shortbread Cookies Ingredients: 1 cup butter (2 sticks) 3/4 cup powdered sugar 2 tbsp eggnog 2-1/2 cups flour 1 pinch salt

Cookies Preheat oven to 330°F. Cream together butter and powdered sugar. Add eggnog and mix together. Slowly add flour and salt. Mix until dough comes together. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out dough with cookie cutters.

Bake for about 12-14 minutes, or until it is a light golden-brown color on top.

Cool completely to harden.

Bourbon vanilla glaze Mix together 2 cups of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of bourbon, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Add just enough water, drop by drop, to create a glaze.

you make your shortbread cookies, coat them with royal icing and then let them sit overnight (I make my royal icing with 2 cups of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of meringue powder, and as many drops of water as necessary to create a glaze. Mix together until smooth and you’ve achieved your desired consistency).

Cut out your beautiful wafer designs, and then brush a little corn syrup on the back of the wafer paper. Set the paper, design side up, on the cookie.

Smooth it down with your fingers to make sure it’s tacked down, and then let it set for about 10 minutes (the instructions say to turn the cookie upside down). When the cookies are dry, ice the edges with royal icing that you have thickened, and sprinkle with decorative sugar, then shake off the excess sugar.

Local artist’s exhibition opens philosophical doors mom cents

Mixed-media artist Charmagne Coe loves making abstract metaphors.

Her upcoming solo exhibition, titled “Pan Door,” is all about stripping away layers to try to find deeper meanings.

She said her work is meant to show the human experience of opening doors in oneself and discovering new things about ourselves.

The exhibition features an array of surreal drawings and paintings in watercolor, ink and pastel. Coe calls it “expressive surrealism” and says the foundations of her work are “love and egalitarianism.”

“Coe’s unhindered style, luminous color palette, sinuous lines and delicate forms lure the viewer in where they can further examine and reflect upon themselves,” said curator Nicole Royse of Royse Contemporary Gallery, where “Pan Door” will be on view. photo page

Coe received her bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University in elementary education with a minor in fine arts. “I have great interest in the theater for the way it tells stories to an audience. A well-told story can get rid of your prejudices and sweep the cobwebs from your brain,” said Bluth, now 80 but acting and sounding decades younger.

“We do six shows a year and one that’s a youth show,” he said. “We pick them by calculating what our audiences want to see and what we think they should see.”

Musicals are rare: “They cost up to $6,000 in royalties,” Bluth explained. The theater’s repertoire these days consists mostly of classic films retold onstage.

This month’s offering is the theater’s annual holiday production of It’s a Wonderful Life. The man whose company created near Sherwin Williams Paint is the tiny Don Bluth Front Row Theatre. There, movies ranked among the top box12 months a year, Bluth exercises his office grossing animated features passion for seeing stories unfold, not (the Land Before Time franchise in frames of animation, but in the alone grossed more than $81 million) Imagination, innovation and storytelling are the Triple Crown of creativity for Don Bluth, a self-made artist whose resume includes wild successes in arcade video games and animated features. It was Bluth who captivated millions of early arcade video game fans with Dragon’s Lair,

doesn’t really need to produce plays for small audiences. Why does he do it? Bluth answered in the negative: “I was never very good at hobbies.

I wouldn’t be caught dead on a golf course, and I’m good for about 20 minutes on the beach.” He simply has nothing else to do that might interest him.

But Cheryl Schaar, who directed It’s A Wonderful Life, believes the real reason has more to do with an urge to give. “I would say what drives Don is the need to uplift people,” Schaar said. “He is always talking about how theater can inspire, motivate and uplift the human spirit. In an often weary world, he just wants his audiences to leave the theater feeling uplifted and hopeful.”

His gifts keep on giving. Dragon’s Lair, which hit arcades with a wallop in 1983, still has its fans – so many of them that Bluth said he now has a movie version in the works. “For some reason, Dragon’s Lair is still being played. It’s just a linear game, not like the sophisticated video games today.

But it has a following. Based on a lot of fan mail, I thought I’d run the idea up

a flagpole and see how many people saluted.”

Bluth went on the fundraising site Indiegogo and asked for $500,000 to underwrite a Dragon’s Lair trailer, in anticipation of a complete movie. He raised $700,000. “We thought, ‘Wow, there is some interest here!’” Bluth said.

The project is underway. Bluth would prefer not to say much about the movie version, except that it will be a prequel, in which Dirk, the dopey knight in shining armor, is shown as a young squire, readying himself for a world of adventure... and misadventure. The princess he saved countless times in the original video game also will return.

“But she won’t be an airhead this time,” Bluth said. “You can’t do that anymore.”

Jude Tarris never envisioned a career in home health care until after he became a caregiver for a national franchise. “I really took to the people I was helping and it felt nice to make a difference,” he said. That experience propelled Tarris to open Valley of the Sun Homecare in Scottsdale.

Tarris provides services that help people live independently in their own homes, from running errands and driving to medical appointments to meal preparation and light housekeeping. “Instead of moving into assisted living, they can stay at home with our help,” Tarris said.

Valley of the Sun Homecare also provides caregivers who can assist with grooming and bathing as well as 24-hour care and live-in service.

Most times, the initial call comes from a family member who is concerned about an elderly relative, Tarris said. Often the calls come from out-of-state children who visit parents and notice differences in habits and obvious changes in behavior, like not attending to personal hygiene or letting the house fall into disrepair. “They realize something’s not right.”

Adult children can be apprehensive because while they’re concerned for their parents’ welfare and safety, they’re often reluctant to “ruffle feathers,” Tarris said.

After a family member or the potential client makes that first call, Valley

of the Sun Homecare staff will offer a free in-home assessment. “We really dive in and learn what their needs are, what their home situation looks like and maybe give recommendations if they need safety equipment,” he said.

If the family is then ready to proceed, Tarris and staff will devise a care plan and match a qualified caregiver with the client. Then, a care coordinator accompanies the caregiver on the first day to make sure the caregiver is a good match for the client. After the first visit, the care coordinator continues to make supervisory visits.

Valley of the Sun Homecare caregivers are required to undergo a rigorous background check and drug screening, and they must be certified in first aid and CPR. The company also provides in-office training for employees.

“We don’t hire them unless they meet our requirements,” Tarris said. But the bottom line? “Is this someone we would trust with our own family?”

Recently, Tarris added an 11-month-old puppy named Winnie to the staff. After rescuing her from the Arizona Animal Welfare League, Tarris trained her to become a therapy dog. Winnie has completed her training and will now visit Valley of the Sun clients and patients at skilled nursing facilities around the community.

“She’ll put a smile on their faces.”

Inspire Day Spa connects with nature in McCormick Ranch

From the outside, Inspire Day Spa looks like any other storefront in the Mercado del Lago shopping center in McCormick Ranch. But when you step inside, you’re greeted by comforting spa music, muted colors, positive energy from the friendly employees and a bonus – the spa’s relaxation room overlooks Lake Marguerite, immediately connecting you with nature.

Owner Stacy Corzo, a former mortgage broker who also owns New Serenity Spa in north Scottsdale, opened Inspire Day Spa in November. “I wanted to take what I’ve learned over the past couple of years and integrate that into a new place,” she said.

Corzo was drawn to the McCormick Ranch space because of the proximity to the lake and nature. By Niki D’Andrea At first, standing in the cryotherapy chamber at US Cryotherapy feels like hanging out in a walk-in freezer at a restaurant. A few moments later, the crisp sensation of cold starts its tingling dance across the cheeks. Several seconds later, it’s freaking freezing and human breath looks like the thick mists over the mountains in The Hobbit, and the body begins to shake – starting from its very core and vibrating outwards in a nervous-system attempt to create friction and its byproduct of warmth.

It doesn’t work. This stinging cold session lasts anywhere from two minutes to two-and-a-half minutes, or however long it takes the body temperature to drop between 45 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The body stays chilly long after exiting the arctic chamber at US Cryotherapy. The extreme temperature – minus 150 degrees Fahrenheit, on average – is meant to shock the body into a healing mode, and many athletes use it as an alternative to ice baths for relieving extremely sore muscles.

“It’s all about the flight-or-fight response,” said Timon Romero, general manager at the US Cryotherapy location that opened last month in Scottsdale, referring to the physiological reaction that humans and animals have when faced with a perceived threat.

The brain releases a hormonal surge that triggers the production of chemicals like norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin, which results in (among

other things) increased blood flow to muscles and increased muscle tension to enhance strength and agility.

The use of cold to treat injuries dates back to ancient Egypt, but high-tech cryotherapy has its beginnings just after World War II, when liquid nitrogen became commercially available. Though popularized in Europe and widely practiced throughout the Western world, cryotherapy has never been the subject

of thorough scientific research to determine its efficacy. But it certainly has its share of proponents and purported clients, including the Phoenix Rising soccer team – an official partner of the US Cryotherapy location in Scottsdale – and a few Arizona Cardinals. “(Our clients are) anywhere from youth athletes to pro sports,” Romero said. “We also get the middle-aged weekend warriors who want to stay active but their bodies are breaking down, and some chronic pain patients.”

Unlike most other cryotherapy businesses, US Cryotherapy doesn’t use nitrogen, but instead utilizes electrically cooled and refrigerated hyper-oxygenated air. The family-founded, Roseville, California-based company was established in April 2011 and has expanded to include four company-owned wellness centers and eight franchises. The new Scottsdale location was Arizona’s first US Cryotherapy outpost, and opened almost concurrently with a Tucson facility.

The cryochamber itself is large enough for guests to exercise in – which they frequently do. Two stateof-the-art speakers are mounted at one end of the chamber. “There’s music piped in to give them something to think about other than being cold,” Romero said.

Guests can choose what song they want to hear while in the chamber, and Romero said clients pick everything from death metal to hardcore gangsta rap, but to his knowledge, no one’s opted for opera yet. Something with a beat probably works better when one is shocking their body with frigidity.

The entire time someone is in the chamber, a staff member monitors the temperature of the chamber and the heart rate and body temperature of the guest at a computer station right outside the chamber window. Before a guest enters the chamber, their body temperature is gauged with an infrared thermometer called a Therma Gun.

The same device takes their temperature after the session to ensure the client is in the target body temp range.

The benefits are immediate, according to Romero. “You’ll notice a difference after one treatment,” he said. “After that, we recommend two to three times (a month).”

After exiting the chamber, clients warm up a bit on stationary bikes. In addition to the cryotherapy chamber, the Scottsdale location of US Cryotherapy includes a handful of treatment rooms offering additional therapies like “localization” with a vacuum-like tube

that blows 30-degree-air on a specific spot for three minutes (“It’s the equivalent of an ice pack, but faster,” Romero said); HydroMassage beds that utilize water to reportedly stimulate muscles and alleviate pain; and the NormaTech compression system, which wraps one’s legs in puff y cuffs and applies intense-but-tolerable pressure from toe to thigh and back again to allegedly stimulate the lymphatic system and increase circulation.
