S

cottsdale City Council has decided to review the Old Town Character Area Plan – a move that could open the door to limiting the maximum heights for new developments. Council asked staff to agendize an official

review for its Aug. 24 meeting over concerns that current height allowances are overburdening downtown infrastructure and run contrary to residents’ desires. The plan, last updated in 2018, is a broad visioning document that outlines the goals for downtown and its evolution. When Council unanimously approved the 2018 plan, it also increased maximum heights

in parts of downtown from 90 to 120 feet and expanded the areas where buildings as tall as 150 feet could be built. Those changes have triggered some controversy. Residents mobilized to oppose projects utilizing those new allowances, including the Southbridge Two development that faced a
